Hamilton-based Starr Tours starts to see a shift in business

In the 14 years that Jerry Walgate has worked as a driver for Starr Tours, he has seen a shift in the bus touring business.

“It’s a big change,” he said. “It seems to be we’re doing more and more school work than we are the senior citizens.”

Long gone are the days of endless bus trips for retirees to Atlantic City casinos, Starr spokeswoman Sandy Borowsky said. Those trips have been replaced by day trips for school groups and “vacation by bus” packages.

“Casino trips have become a less important part of our business. They still are a part of our business, but nowhere near where they were when they opened and we were sending 50 buses a day down to Atlantic City,” Borowsky said.

She attributed that shift to the opening of casinos in Pennsylvania and also to the fact that more people are working well into their retirement years, a consequence of changing lifestyles and also the impact of the recession on people’s retirement nest eggs.

Three or four days a week, Starr Tours operates one round-trip Atlantic City route with stops in Ewing, Hamilton and Southampton. The Hamilton-based company has mostly replaced its casino business with day trips to Broadway shows, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, destinations that appeal to people of all ages.

“Our business has changed dramatically,” Borowsky said.

The company also turns to business from athletics programs, providing transportation for the Trenton Thunder and various high school athletic programs, she said.

One of the vacation by bus trips headed out Wednesday from a passenger pick-up at the AMC theater on Sloan Avenue. Driver Tom Brooks took 20 passengers and Starr tour guide Kathy Walgate to New York so they could board a cruise ship headed to the Caribbean.

Starr planned the trip for the passengers and provided a guide. Walgate, the wife of bus driver Jerry Walgate, will accompany the group and make sure their needs are met, Borowsky said.

“I have a responsibility for them for the entire cruise — 24/7, basically. So if it’s nice and calm, you just see them every day,” Kathy Walgate said. “We offer a hospitality desk where we give them information on the ports. I don’t take them into the ports or on the excursions, but I’m there as a resource and I’m also there in case something happens.”

For the vacation bus trips, Starr takes care of all of the planning, she said. Everything from getting show tickets at a discount to providing a tour guide who gives the group background information about the places they visit is included in the price, she said.

“If you’re willing to travel in a group — which is a great way to travel because, A, you meet people, B, you don’t have to be alone and, C, we do everything for you — then it’s a great way to travel,” Borowsky said.

In addition to the cruise packages — everywhere from the Panama Canal to Alaska — Starr offers overnight trips to Cape Cod, Niagara Falls and a 26-day bus trip to California, as well as jet vacations to Europe. Jerry Walgate said he mostly drives school groups on day trips and has done fewer vacation trips during the past few years.

"It's been a huge shift for us. I think a lot of people are traveling on their own. They're not doing the package tours as much as they used to. I think that's a lot of it," he said. "The younger crowd doesn't want to do the bus tour thing because they think it's all old people."

Starr Tours has changed its business structure as passengers to Atlantic City have been on the decline.

In 2004, more than 6.5 million people visited the city traveling on a casino bus tours run by various different companies, compared with only 2.5 million in 2012, according to figures from the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

Richard Stockton College of New Jersey professor Israel Posner, who heads up the school’s Lloyd Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism, said casino bus traffic peaked in the late 1980s and has been on the decline ever since.

Where the casinos once targeted senior citizens — offering them a free roll of quarters and a buffet — they now look for a younger crowd that will take advantage of the city’s other amenities, such as clubs, bars and the beach, Posner said.

“You’re targeting a much younger demographic that’s looking to do things beyond the casino floor,” Posner said. “Those are convenience customers, and they’ll go to Pennsylvania and North Jersey to places that are much closer to home.”

In Brooks’ 52 years as a Starr bus driver, he has seen changes in everything from the types of buses — which are no longer stick shift — to the addition of longer, overnight trips. “I used to do a lot of overnight stuff but now that I’m retired I just do one day of work at a time,” he said. His favorite trip is Niagara Falls.

Brooks officially retired from Starr in September but came back to work part time, usually one or two days a week.

Kathy Walgate, who has been married to Jerry Walgate for 19 years, said she hardly sees her husband during the company's busy May through October touring season. "He'll just come back from a trip and then I'll leave for eight days," Kathy said.
