Progressive Rock Band CHANDELIER

The end is near: Our final Doppeldecker date is coming up!

We have one more Doppeldecker date with our buddies from Flying Circus coming up, so make sure to get a ticket before our double headlining tour is over: Sat. 20/04 Stuttgart, Club Zentral ( tickets here )

chandelier tour

With the GAD re-releases now sold out, we have issued new digisleeve editions of our FACING GRAVITY and TIMECODE albums, featuring the Eroc Remasters from 2018 and 2019 respectively.

WE CAN FLY now out on vinyl – exclusive transparent yellow vinyl available via Just for Kicks

chandelier tour

The LP version of our new album WE CAN FLY is now available – either in classic black or in translucent yellow vinyl. The latter can be exclusively purchased from Just for Kicks .

First Doppeldecker-Dates are over – more to come in 2024!

chandelier tour

We had a truly phantastic time playing with our pals from FLYING CIRCUS at the RIND in Rüsselsheim and ZECHE CARL in Essen. Thanks for everyone who came out to see us & we hope to see more happy faces at our upcoming dates in Hamburg (10.2.), Jülich (23.3.), Reichenbach (5.4.) and Stuttgart (20.4.).

New album WE CAN FLY is out now!

chandelier tour

WE CAN FLY is our first studio album in 26 years! Featuring seven new songs, the album is 51 min. long and available on CD, digital download and hopefully soon on vinyl as well. More details here .

Live dates with Flying Circus announced for 2023/2024 – now including ART Rock Festival 2024 in Reichenbach!

chandelier tour

CHANDELIER will be playing a handful of shows as part of a double headliner bill with old friends FLYING CIRCUS. Check out our concert page for details.

SOL – the first solo album by Martin Eden out now

chandelier tour

The Chandelier singer just released his first self-produced CD SOL. Featuring 45 minutes of music that is probably best described as a mix of electronica, prog and kraut rock – all written, performed and recorded by the man himself. SOL is available at Empire Music and Bandcamp .

Prog Generations – the tour that almost never happened

We just about made it and finally played – between two lockdowns – our two gigs with Thomas t Thielen in Essen & Rüsselsheim. While many ticket holders stayed home for obvious reasons, those who came helped us forget the Corona blues for a couple of music-filled hours. More videos on our Youtube channel .

Essen & Rüsselsheim gigs postponed again – new dates for late 2021

chandelier tour

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing Corona situation we are not able to play the Prog Generation double bill concerts with t at Zeche Carl Essen and Das Rind in Rüsselsheim this fall. We do have however a new – and hopefully ‘safe’ – date: Sat. Nov. 13th, 2021 for Essen and Sat. Nov. 20th, 2021 for Das Rind ! Tickets will be valid for that date or can be returned to where they have originally been bought.

Limited edition of Pure available in translucent blue vinyl

chandelier tour

Just in time for it’s 30th anniversary, GAD Records released a limited vinyl pressing of our debut album PURE. The 300 LPs come with translucent blue vinyl – and if you are lucky enough to see us at the ART Rock Festival in Reichenbach you might get your hands on a signed copy and Pure T-Shirt as well.

Reichenbach May date cancelled, but Art Rock Festival in September confirmed!

chandelier tour

Good & bad news: while our joined concert with  Stern-Combo Meissen  on May 9th has been cancelled due to the ongoing Corona situation, we are excited to announce our participation at this year´s  Artrock – Festival Reichenbach . We will be playing on saturday Sept. 19th from 7 – 8.20 pm.

Out now: Live at Loreley CD/DVD

chandelier tour

Not the greatest time to promote something as banal, but anyway, here we go:  Live at Loreley , our CD/DVD package featuring last year’s comeback gig at the Night of the Progs is finally out! It’s the complete concert –  produced by Armin Riemer, video footage edited by Udo Lang and with artwork courtesy by  Frank Grabowski . The little beauty is available at  Empire Music . More infos  here

Cancelled by Corona

chandelier tour

We are extremely disappointed but we have to cancel our upcoming shows in Verviers and Essen. The corona crisis has gotten to a point where playing seemed like the worst of various bad options. The one good news is that we got a new date for the Essen gig and we hope to see you all there and then:  friday Sept. 11th! Tickets for Verviers will can be returned for refund where they have been bought. Tickets for Essen will be valid for the September 11th date but can also be returned for refund at the place where they were originally bought. We are really sorry for any inconvinience we cause you, but public health has to be the priority here.

More live dates…

chandelier tour

We are excited to add two more dates to our gig list: On May 9th we will join art rock pioneers  Stern Combo Meissen  for a double feature at the beautiful Neuberinhaus in Reichenbach. Further information and tickets are available  here .

On October 16th we will again team up with  t  aka Thomas Thielen and band for a show at the cozy Rüsselsheim club Das Rind. Tickets for this and the other two Prog Generations shows are available  here

Oops, we’ll do it again…

chandelier tour

We are very proud and excited to get together with the rather fantastic  Thomas Thielen aka ‘t’  for a couple of exclusive shows that promise to be, well… rather fantastic! On friday March 13th we’ll be playing at the Spirit of ’66 in Verviers (B), on saturday March 14th at the Zeche Carl in Essen (D). Tickets for both shows are now available here:  https://www.wiv-ticket-shop.com/de

As with the reissues of  PURE  and  FACING GRAVITY , this new edition of TIMECODE has been wonderfully remastered by  Eroc  and comes with a new booklet featuring liner notes and period pictures. The bonus CD LOST & FOUND features 77 min. of mostly unreleased music from 1986 to 2018, including demo versions and acoustic performances, rehearsal recordings and three songs newly recorded in 2018!

CHANDELIER confirmed for the Night Of The Prog Festival 2019!

chandelier tour

What better occasion for our little band to reunite for one night than at the famous Night Of The Prog Festival on the Loreley. We are thrilled and slightly shocked that it’s actually happening… and we have a lot of rehearsal weekends booked to re-learn what we think are your favourite tracks from our three albums.

OUT NOW! (… and the critics love ’em)

Notes: Tour Thru Tree is located at 430 California State Route 169 (Klamath Glen Road) in Klamath, California 21 mi (34 km) south of Crescent City. Tour Thru and neighboring trees were spared when the area was logged in 1967.

In May 1976, retired United States Air Force Major and former Del Norte County supervisor Harold A. Del Ponte hired two nephews, one an engineer and the other a tree faller, to carve a 7.33 ft (2.23 m) wide and 9.50 ft (2.90 m) tall tunnel, large enough for automobiles, through the trunk of Tour Thru. They completed the job, using a 7 ft (2 m) long chainsaw, in just under two days. As compensation, Del Ponte offered his nephews $600 cash up-front or half of the tourism proceeds perpetually. Never anticipating that Tour Thru Tree would become a popular tourist attraction, the men opted for cash.

Tour Thru, which appears in a television commercial , is the newest and second most-popular of the three drive-through coast redwoods: as many as 60,000 vehicles visit the tree each year. Although Chandelier is more-popular, Tour Thru accommodates larger vehicles. Tour Thru Tree Park also offers picnic tables, a unique redwood restroom, a gift shop, and (in a field across the street) a mob of emus ( Dromaius novaehollandiae ). Tour Thru Tree Park is open year-round. Call 707-482-5971 for seasonal hours, entrance fees, and more information.

  • A Burlesque Family at Home

Showbiz couple Angie Pontani and Brian Newman’s high-spirited Marine Park house.

Portrait of Wendy Goodman

Everybody knows that we love old things,” says the burlesque artist Angie Pontani, who is showing me the exuberant, family-hand-me-down-filled Marine Park house in in Southeast Brooklyn she shares with her husband, the musician Brian Newman, and their 8-year-old daughter, Sistilia. “And if you give me something, I can’t get rid of it.”

“That was my aunt Livia’s,” Pontani notes, pointing out the armchair in the living room, “from when she got her first apartment in the ’80s.” Pontani and Newman had it reupholstered in leopard. The matching ottoman, from her aunt Norma, dates from the 1940s. The bedroom set was her parents’. The chandelier is from Grandma Mary, “who brought it back from Italy in the ’50s,” she says. “There’s also Great-grandpa Paul’s office chair from his restaurant, Casa Lido, in Trenton.”

chandelier tour

The dining table was her great-grandmother Sistilia’s; even their daughter’s name is an heirloom. “It’s a super-old-school name,” Pontani says. “It loosely means ‘sixth-born,’ like when they name you after a number. But it’s such a pretty name.” Some of what they have inherited were her father’s flea-market finds. “Growing up, this is one of the things that my dad would do every Sunday morning. We’d get up at five and go, and we’d just search for cool stuff.”

Pontani and Newman moved here in 2019 after living together in her apartment in Kensington. Her nephews were upstairs in the same building; family is important to Pontani. She is “100 percent Italian, born in Trenton, New Jersey,” she says, where every-one in her neighborhood was related and knew one another. Her family, she adds, “are very traditional,” but her father liked to paint and had what she describes as “extreme style,” including in home décor. She takes after him.

Pontani had always wanted to be in show business. But after a year in the acting program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she grew bored and dropped out. While working at a Tribeca café, she met a group of performers from The Dutch Weismann, “one of the first true revival burlesque shows in the city in the mid-’90s,” she says. Pontani signed on. “The show had dancing and singing and, of course, burlesque, but I didn’t even know what it was at the time. I couldn’t have cared less about stripping, but it brought out natural skills that I didn’t know I had in terms of costuming, choreography, and production.” (She was the co-producer of the New York Burlesque Festival from 2002 to 2023.)

Newman, a trumpeter and singer from Cleveland, moved to New York in 2003. He found music gigs on Craigslist. “I did hip-hop bands, I did Latin bands, I did jazz bands — literally, any gig that had a trumpet I would take.” He met Lady Gaga while bartending at St. Jerome on the Lower East Side; she was a go-go dancer and party promoter at the time. Later, he co-produced the track “La Vie en Rose” with Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born and was also the bandleader, arranger, and trumpeter on two albums by Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett .

Newman met Pontani when he answered a Craigslist ad that said “trumpet player wanted for burlesque troupe.” But he played it so cool on their first date — a Mets game in the best seats he could buy — that she wasn’t sure it was a date. Four years later, their friend the comedian Murray Hill urged them to go out again. They married in 2013.

Now, Newman is the music director of Bruno Mars’s club, the Pinky Ring, at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. He and Pontani also have a residency in Vegas at the Nomad Library called “Brian Newman After Dark,” which Newman describes as “really a throwback to the old lounge vibes of Louis Prima in the main showroom with Frank Sinatra.”

“The biggest thing” about being a burlesque performer, Pontani says, “is this self-ownership of your sexiness, of your femininity, and you display it any way you want to in a satirical way.”

Guide to Paris’ Opera Garnier: Inside the Phantom’s Lair

Here’s my guide to visiting the glamorous Opera Garnier in Paris. The opera house is a must visit attraction in the 9th arrondissement.

A creation of Charles Garnier, it was part of Napoleon’s great makeover of Paris. It’s highly decorative, a mix of Beaux-Arts symmetry and Baroque and Renaissance elements.

facade of the Opera Garnier, an architectural landmark in Paris

Visiting Paris’ Opera Garnier is a dual-purpose immersive experience.

You can experience the incredibly opulent palace space, designed by Charles Garnier. And you can re-live the Gothic potboiler, The Phantom of the Opera , from Gaston Leroux and Andrew Lloyd Webber fame.

What could be better? An over the top Paris opera house for an over the top murder-y opera villain.

Until recently, I hadn’t been inside for a long time. I saw the famous Chagall ceiling when I was young.

Thereafter, I satisfied myself with admiring the impressive facade of what may be the world’s most famous opera house, as I strolled past it in the 9th arrondissement .

Pinterest pin for guide to theOpera Garnier

But the last time I was in Paris , I was assailed by murky recollections. And by the Phantom’s plaintive theme song playing “there inside my mind.”

I hadn’t planned on going in. But I did. It’s almost as if I was involuntarily ventriloquized by Andrew Lloyd Weber.

If you don’t want to head to Versailles and suffer through the awful lines, come here instead.

The Opera Garnier’s just as sumptuous, maybe more so, than Versailles and hence a great alternative. Truly, the opera is one of Paris’ most unsung hidden gems , a gaudy jewel box treasure.

Open the jewel box and look in, don’t just stroll by.

the glamorous facade of the Paris Opera house, a must see site in Paris' 9th arrondissement

History of the Opera Garnier

The Opera Garnier, also known as the Palais Garnier, first sprang from the brain of Napoleon III.

It wasn’t a calculated choice. While attending the Opera of Rue Le Peletier, Napoleon barely escaped a bomb in an assassination attempt.

Right then and there, Napoleon resolved to build a new opera house that he could safely attend. One that had a private entrance just for him. Besides, Paris needed a glamorous new theater.

In 1860, Napoleon held an international competition for the design of the new Paris Opera. 171 proposals were submitted anonymously.

An unknown architect won, the 34 year old Charles Garnier , putting the seasoned Parisian architects to shame. His project was number #38, named “I aspire to much, I expect little.”

architect of the Opera Garnier in Paris, Charles Garnier

Garnier was so inexperienced that he didn’t even have his own office. He had to build one on the opera site. And he didn’t like the site overly much. It was smushed together and enclosed between four roads in the shape of a diamond.

Garnier repeatedly asked for a different venue. But the answer was always no. Haussman’s grand boulevards and Paris’ urban renewal were the first priority. Roads were more important than opera.

In 1861, Garnier began construction. His masterpiece took 15 years to finish. The opera is wholly Garnier’s creation, from start to finish. He designed everything.

Garnier also selected and guided the work of collaborating artists, many of whom were prestigious grand prize winners. In total, there were 15 principal artists, 75 sculptors, and myriad artisans who slaved away on the Opera Garnier.

the sculptures on the Paris Opera, labeled. image source: Wikipedia

It didn’t all go smoothly. In 1962, the builders discovered a lake underneath the site.

They created a stone cistern — an artificial lake — for the water and underground tunnels, as a work around. Even today, the cistern halts the rising water, though water still needs to be pumped out. The tank’s also used for Paris firefighters to practice nighttime swimming.

Construction of the Paris Opera was also controversial. Almost operatic, if you will. Everyone felt entitled to weigh in on the splashy new place.

Garnier’s plan was mocked as a labyrinth, a turkish bath, and wedding cake. Even Empress Eugenie asked Garnier what style he was aiming for. His terse response was that it was “in the Napoleon style, Madame.” Louis XIV style was passé.

bust of Garnier

During construction, the opera facade was kept under wraps, to build tension. When the opera was finally inaugurated in 1875, the public saw the showy facade for the first time.

And they were stunned.

Guide To The Opera Garnier: What To See

Here’s what you’ll see on a visit to the Opera Garnier.

Exterior Facade

The exterior is sometimes compared to a wedding cake. You can sort of see why.

It’s built in a rather bombastic Beaux-Artes style with eclectic Neo-Baroque elements. Between the grand columns are bronze busts of great composers. The two gilded figures crowning the facade on the left and right are Harmony and Poetry.

At the very top, there’s a statue of a shining Apollo holding up a lyre. He seems intent on proclaiming that the opera house is THE place for arts.

another view of the facade

One the eastern side is the Emperor’s Pavilion, the only non-symmetrical part of the building. This was the entrance for Napoleon and wealthy season ticket holders. It’s now closed.

The most famous sculptural group on the facade is The Dance by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux.

When it was unveiled in 1869, it caused an immediate furor because of its “obscene” nude figures. An anonymous vandal even threw black ink on the sculpture.

Carpeaux steadfastly refused to sculpt a substitute. But during the fall of the Second Empire, critics were distracted.

The sculpture was forgotten and never replaced. Now, there’s a replica on the opera facade and the original is in the Musée d’Orsay.

Paris Opera Interior

You enter on the left side and are greeted by a bust of Garnier.

The interior was designed in four segments: the entrance, the auditorium, the stage, and the administrative offices. As you proceed through, it’s almost a crescendo, with each room more magnificent than the next.

The acoustics were outstanding, and the stage one of Europe’s largest.

The highlights are the Grand Staircase, the Grand Foyer, and the Chagall Ceiling. You begin on the ground level and are greeted by costumes. The Opera Garnier makes all their own costumes, an impressive feat itself.

the magnificent Grand Staircase at the Paris Opera house, an unmissable site in Paris

1. Grand Staircase, aka the Catwalk

Then you walk up the jaw dropping Grand Staircase. It’s made entirely of marble, and surrounded with arches, hidden nooks, statues, and gold — gold everywhere.

In the 19th century, the haughty Grand Staircase was a gossipy soap opera, the place to see and be seen.

Garnier aptly said that “The opera is the staircase.” The scandalous stairway revealed all — who was together, who was having affairs, who was favored, who was scorned.

The staircase is made of white marble from Italy, with balusters of antique red and green marble. The staircase is flanked by 36 large columns, and divides into two staircases that direct opera goers to their respective seats.

The ceiling has fresco by Isidore Pils, painted in 1869-74, that depicts the Triumph of Apollo. At the top of the staircases are large torchieres.

the Grand Staircase

2. The Grand Foyer, a Mini Versailles Hall of Mirrors

The 18 foot high Grand Foyer is astonishing. It’s decidedly reminiscent of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

This was the place where aristocrats strolled after they were done “acting” on the Grand Staircase or during intermission.

The room is all gold and glitter. At the top, is another impressive ceiling fresco, this one by Paul Baudry, which shows the history of music.

The foyer’s key decorative motif is the lyre. The Grand Foyer was renovated to perfection in 2004.

Paul Baudry ceiling of the Grand Foyer

At each end of the grand foyer lie two salons. The Salon du Soleil (Sun Salon) has a golden sun burst and mirrored walls. The Salon de la Lune (Moon Salon) boasts a night sky adorned with silver moon rays and stars.

The sun room was supposed to represent fire and be the smoking room. The moon room was supposed to represent ice, for a cool sorbet.

But the decorator reversed the schemes to Garnier’s dismay. Opera goers were forced to traipse through the “ice room” to smoke a cigar and the “sun room” to nibble a sorbet.

the beautiful 1964 Chagall ceiling in the Paris Opera

3. Chagall Ceiling: A Surrealistic Gift to Paris

The Marc Chagall ceiling isn’t original. It was commissioned in 1964 and placed over the existing academic painting by Jules-Eugene Lenepveu, The Muses and the Hours of the Day and Night .

But it’s so much better. It’s the perfect backdrop for the Garnier-designed 7 ton bronze and crystal chandelier.

Legend holds that General de Gaulle and Andre Malraux, minister of culture, were attending an opera with a set and costumes designed by Chagall. The minister glanced at the ceiling and frowned in tedium. On the spot, he asked Chagall to design a new ceiling.

Chagall was a “modern” artist back then. His supernatural style work drew from the artistic movements of Surrealism, Fauvism, and Cubism.

The proposed ceiling was controversial. Some people don’t like anything new. Some thought it was garish and would clash with the opera’s Second Empire decor.

a study for the academic painting by Jules-Eugene Lenepveu, now hidden under the Chagall ceiling

To keep the peace and as a concession to critics, Chagall proposed that Lenepveu’s work be preserved and Chagall’s be placed on a removable canvas stretched over it.

The mural took Chagall a year to complete. It consists of 12 canvas panels and a round central panel covering 240 square meters.

Chagall was 77 at the time and it was an act of love. He donated it to the opera house gratis. The mural has his trademark features — luminous prismatic colors, dreamy details, and poetic lyricism.

If you look closely, you’ll see that the ceiling is an homage to music. It features 14 composers from different musical periods, musical instruments, and Paris’ signature buildings.

Malraux is even hidden behind a window. Chagall’s ceiling helped make the opera more fashionable again.

The Paris Opera auditorium.

4. Auditorium and Stage

Red is the color of glamor. And that’s what you’ll find in the opera auditorium.

If you want to actually visit the auditorium, you have to go on a guided tour. On the self-guided audio tour, you can only peek through a window and can’t properly see the Chagall ceiling.

The auditorium is very ornate, decorated in red velvet, marble, and gold leaf. Because you can never have enough gold leaf in an opera house. If you’re thinking that it’s just all too much, remember that opera itself a florid overwrought affair.

another view of the Opera Garnier auditorium and stage

The stage is a classic horseshoe shape. The curtain is actually made of canvas, but contrived to appear like draping velvet. The stage featured many luminaries, including opera star Maris Callas and dancer Rudolf Nureyev.

The auditorium seats almost 2,000. While gorgeous, the seats don’t look terribly comfy. They were made in another era, where comfort didn’t dictate nearly everything.

The most expensive seats are the boudoir-like boxes, though they have a slightly obstructed view of the stage.

The point, of course, was to be seen by others, not to have the most ideal view of the performance. Or, to draw the velvet curtains for a tryst. The opera’s a romantic place, after all.

A key moment in the Phantom of the Opera musical, when Erik kidnaps Christine and takes her to his watery underground lair. Image source: Her Majesty's Theater

Phantom of the Opera: Inspired by the Opera Garnier

By today’s politically correct standards, with its clunky plot, Phantom of the Opera may seem a bit dated or patriarchal. But I can’t resist a lush high Gothic romance, even if the titular hero is a bit murdery. It’s escapism, as its author Gaston Leroux, a true crime writer and opera critic, no doubt intended.

Yet, the practical side of me always wonders where the Phantom got a horse and does he have a humidifier.

In any event, for purposes of this article, I want to explain how historical events at the Opera Garnier inspired Leroux’s 1910 potboiler. His fantasy novel is an ingenious blending of fact and fiction, with the Paris Opera as a star character.

The novel stars Erik as the phantom, a disfigured composer who wears a mask to cover his face. He takes up residence in the underground lake beneath the theater.

Erik becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine Daaé. He becomes her “angel of music,” giving her complimentary singing lessons.

the 7 ton chandelier in the Paris Opera house

The phantom rigs a chandelier to fall on the audience as a distraction, killing people. He then kidnaps Christine, taking her by gondola to his watery underground lair full of secret tunnels. He regales her with the title song Phantom of the Opera and Music of the Night.

Christine’s star rises, and a handsome suitor enters the picture. A jealous Phantom is furious and begins terrorizing the opera house. I won’t spoil the ending if you haven’t read the novel or seen the musical.

But many elements of Leroux’s novel, which is set in an opera house, come directly from the Paris Opera. The Phantom’s underground lake-lair is real, as I mentioned above. Though today it’s brightly lit, so not as eerily gloomy. And there are actually tunnels, just as Leroux wrote.

The Paris Opera chandelier is also featured in Leroux’s novel. In 1896, a counterweight fell from the real chandelier, killing a woman in the audience. In Phantom, Leroux also uses a falling chandelier as a major plot point, a dramatic scene (described above) of kidnapping and senseless murder.

Opera Garnier sculpture

When Leroux wrote his novel, people also really thought that a pesky ghost was haunting the Paris Opera, just like the phantom haunts the opera in the novel and musical.

Paris Opera performers hung a lucky horseshoe by the stage to ward off evil spirits. Some claimed to hear ghostly whispers from Box #5, even when it was vacant.

Although the Christine-Phantom romance is fantasy, the characters of Erik and Christine may be based on actual people.

The grand masked ball they attend was set on the Paris Opera’s Grand Staircase. The Phantom appears on the staircase dressed as Red Death, carrying a copy of his new opera. His opera is then performed on a stage much like the Paris Opera stage.

Tips For Attending a Performance at the Opera Garnier

The Opera Garnier still functions as a world class performance venue. It’s the home of the Paris Ballet. So usually ballet is on the menu, but there are also concerts and operas.

You can check the schedule of performances here .

Just click on the calendar to see what’s playing that month. Click on Garnier, not Bastille. The new Opera Bastille utterly lacks the Garnier’s old world ambiance anyway.

Opera Garnier rooftop with Apollo sculpture

It’s easiest to reserve online. You need to register on the website to book a ticket. Choose your seats. And voila!

Attire is mostly business-y or business casual, which makes sense because people are going to the opera house after work. You won’t need a fancy ballgown, unless you’re going to a special evening gala.

Like most US theaters, there’s a bar inside that sells champagne and snacks before the show and during intermission.

Opera Garnier stage

Arrive early to admire the gorgeous building and take photos on the iconic marble stairway. If the performance isn’t in English, there will be subtitles.

But don’t let the subtitles distract you from gazing, in adoration, at the sublime Chagall ceiling. If you’re not close enough, head to the orchestra section during intermission to take in the colorful centerpiece.

Don’t miss the glorious Opera Garnier. It’s an unmissable Paris site and one of the best things to do in the 9th arrondissement.

Swathed in gold, you can strain your ears to hear echos of the Phantom of the Opera. You won’t be kidnapped or killed. But you can visit the haunts that inspired the novel and bask in Garnier’s grandiose creation.

How to See the Secret Treasures of Westminster Abbey

Pamela Thomas-Graham

Whether you’re a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, the newly-opened Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey are a must-see. Literally. There is no photography allowed in this newly-opened space high above the Abbey (although the press was allowed to take some pics, so you can get a peek at the new space online). If you want to see it in full, you have to go in person. Which you should definitely do. It’s a magical space, and a transforming experience.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries opened to the public on June 11th of this year, and we took that as the impetus to visit Westminster Abbey for the first time. To see the new space, you must purchase a ticket to visit the Abbey for £22, plus pay an extra £5 to see the Galleries.

We arrived with a timed entry ticket on a fresh bright summer morning, and found the area surrounding the majestic structure already bustling with traffic, commuters and tourists.

Our ticket first gained us admission to the gated front yard, where we used the time to survey the Abbey’s grand exterior, and to daydream about our fellow visitors in the queue.

In case you’re wondering (and we were), Westminster is an abbey, which is more like a monastery — as opposed to a cathedral, which is more like a church. The complex contains living and working quarters for the Abbot and other clergy. So while the two words are often used interchangeably, there is a difference.

Onward! The self-guided tour of the nave (the ground floor central part of the building), the choir stalls and the transepts (the area crosswise to the nave) takes about 60 minutes, depending on your pace, making it a perfect addition to our inventory of experiences for  Two Hours in London  (if you find yourself in London on a business trip or a long layover, we’re sharing suggestions for great ways to get a true taste of the city in two hours or less).

There are no photos allowed in the nave, but if you’d like to see the official images released for personal use, click here .

It’s quite a magnificent space, as you might imagine, and also a bit overwhelming. There are vestrymen and vestrywomen in bright red coats available to answer questions and point out noteworthy features, and it’s well worth chatting with them. They take great pride in their work, and they can share fascinating stories about what you’re seeing.

If we had to choose a “favorite” room, it would probably be The Lady’s Chapel, with its magnificent ceiling  — it’s so ornate and delicately carved that it looks like lace.

As we followed the prescribed path through the majestic space, we passed a wall-mounted plaque honoring Cecil Rhodes, and were reminded that at least some of the figures given places of honor here have a lot to answer for.

You’re allowed to take photos once you exit the nave and enter the adjacent Cloisters, with its verdant hushed courtyard.

The stone corridors of the Cloister are magnificent spaces.

They’re filled with light and works commemorating some of the leading names in British history, as well as depictions of famous moments in the nation’s past (like the Cook expedition). There are mysterious ancient locks and doors.

To sit quietly in the Cloisters and reflect on the meaning of the space is a joy. It’s worth it to arrive very early so that you can experience its quiet magic before the crowds arrive mid-morning (after that, it feels a lot more like a crowded hallway than a lovely space to contemplate life).

There’s a smaller and quieter courtyard and an expansive garden a short walk away. The walls here are rougher-hewn, and the corridor is watched over by a cherub.

In the summer, there are often lunchtime musical performances in the garden.

As much as we loved spending time in the various areas of the Abbey, by far our favorite part of the tour of the nave is the famous  Poet’s Corner . Anyone who is a writer or an artist – or who dreams of becoming one – will want to linger here.

Many of the great writers, poets and composers of British heritage are buried or commemorated in the Abbey in this designated area. Shakespeare is buried in Avon-on-Hudson, but there’s a large monument to honor him here. Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens , Jane Austen, C.S. Lewis, Charlotte Brontë, John Donne, George Frederic Handel, Thomas Hardy, George Eliot , T.S. Eliot, Philip Larkin, Oscar Wilde, D.H. Lawrence, Robert Browning , Alfred Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling, Ralph Vaughan Williams and many others are either commemorated or actually interred here.

Just looking at the names reminds you of how many brilliant artists came from England. There’s a collective energy that seems to emanate from this space that will make you want to return to your desk, or your studio, and set to work trying to create something brilliant. There’s a really good vibe here.

It’s the Poet’s Corner that happens to be the waiting area for the magical  Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries , located high above the Abbey in a 13th-century triforium (according to the Webster-Merriam dictionary, a triforium is “a gallery or arcade above the arches of the nave, choir, and transepts of a church.”) It was used for storage for most of its life, so in plain English, you can think of this space as the attic of the Abbey.

It cost almost £23 million to renovate the triforium. The enhancements included the construction of Weston Tower , a slender structure made of lead and stone that hugs the walls of the Abbey.

One of the first things you see upon entering the tower’s ground floor is a series of floor tiles with the names of prominent donors – among them Goldman Sachs (we guess this is proof positive that their former CEO really was doing the Lord’s work). The stained-glass windows that encase the stairway also feature the names of various patrons of the renovation.

The Galleries are 52 feet above the floor of the Abbey, which means that a visit requires an ascent. There are two options for doing so: a lift or a narrow staircase with 108 stairs.

If you’re able, definitely take the stairs. They twist so much that they’re practically circular, and they’re surrounded by glass walls that showcase incredible views. As you climb, you can see the stonework, flying buttresses and stained glass windows of the Abbey at close range – all architectural elements that were impossible for the public to see up close until now.

Weston Tower Staircase

Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself in a space filled with light, with thick exposed arched and jointed wooden roof beams, a low timber ceiling, and magnificent stained-glass windows. The lighting is dim, and the sound level is hushed. It feels like a secret space, filled with wonders. And no one is taking selfies! So everyone there is actually engaged in what’s on view.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries

As we explored, these Galleries reminded us a bit of the Smithsonian Museum; it has that same delightful feel of a nation’s attic, stuffed with marvelous historical treasures.

Near the entrance, our eyes lit on a series of small white sculptures on rough wooden plinths. We were delighted to find that one of them was Dr. Martin Luther King Junior ! A woman next to us said “ Yay! There’s a woman here! ” It was Catherine of Russia, the country’s longest-ruling female leader. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German pastor, theologian and anti-Nazi dissident, was also among them.

We can’t overstate how deeply we were moved to find an African-American hero in a place of honor in this space. It totally erased any lingering bad feeling we had about that wall plaque of Cecil Rhodes, and instead make us feel a ray of hope. The newest galleries – the ones that perhaps matter the most as a statement about the character and values of a nation – are inclusive, celebrate a diverse array of leaders, and feel both ancient and modern. You can’t ask for more than that.

There are so many treats and never-before-seen treasures in the Diamond Jubilee Galleries that it’s hard to say which was best. For example, the royal marriage licence for HRH Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton is on display for the first time here. England’s oldest surviving altarpiece , thought to have been the centerpiece of Henry III’s Abbey, is here. So is the 14th century Liber Regalis , a guide to staging coronations and royal funerals at the Abbey that still forms the basis of royal ceremonies today. There is a  Queen’s coronation chair , used for the crowning of Mary II in the late seventeenth century.

The true thrill, though, is that at this height, you’re able to actually understand the architecture and floor plan of the nave . As you peer over the triforium edge, areas that are hard to appreciate and fully comprehend at floor level start to make sense. This is a wonderful way to fully experience the glories of the Abbey. It’s also a special place for prayer and quiet reflection if you’re so inclined – the timed entries mean that the Galleries aren’t crowded and you have the luxury of time and personal space.

We descended from this hallowed aerie with a sense of peace and connection that we hadn’t expected.

Back on the ground, we saw the Abbey with new eyes, and with a great deal of reverence.

At some point while you’re visiting, you’re highly likely to hear one of the prayers that is shared over the public address system once an hour. It’s a prayer for peace among all nations and cultures of the world, and for just one moment as you breathe in the air of this hallowed space, it feels as if that hope might actually become real.

That this is a space that welcomes and shelters all who choose to enter. In times like these, that’s a true luxury to be treasured.
