Map for the Grand Tour of Ireland tour

Find your seat, pick a movie, and then try to get a wee bit of shuteye. The majesty and raw beauty of Ireland awaits.

Welcome to Dublin, the capital of Ireland! Once you arrive and drop your bags off at the accommodation, take a stroll to St. Stephen’s Green, Grafton Street, and Temple bar, where pub culture, literary history, and all-around charm await.

In the evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of local cuisine and drinks with fellow travelers at an authentic local spot. Afterwards, you’re free to take the party elsewhere!

Today's highlights:

  • Land at the airport and meet a waiting EF representative.
  • Transfer to your hotel to check in and check out your room.
  • Get familiar with the area around your hotel with an introductory walk with your Tour Director.

Today, see the best Dublin has to offer with a local guide on a tour of the city. Afterwards, enjoy a free afternoon in this bayside Irish capital.

  • Enter St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the 800-year-old church named after the famous saint.
  • Visit the Guinness Storehouse for a crash course in the history of Ireland’s signature beer. Then, let it all soak in high above Dublin with pints at Gravity Bar.
  • Pass by Trinity College, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, home to the storied library that inspired Hogwarts’ own.
  • Sample Dublin’s natural beauty and urban escape at Phoenix Park—the largest park in Europe.

Free time suggestions

Book of Kells: Stick around Trinity College after your tour for a chance to see the Book of Kells—a pristine 1,200-year old illustrated collection of biblical stories—up-close. Jameson Distillery: Sick of stout? Switch things up in favor of the strong stuff with a guided tour and whiskey tasting at the Jameson Distillery Bow St.

Continue by bus to Kilkenny a small city full of Irish charm, medieval architecture, and the most iconic ale in the country. Get ready to eat, drink, drink again, and be very merry.

  • Watch the emerald hills roll along as you head from city to countryside.
  • Arrive in Kilkenny and check in to your accommodation.
  • Walk "The Medieval Mile,” featuring 14th-century castles, inns, and towers.
  • Raise a glass of Smithwick’s, Ireland’s best red ale that has been brewed since 1710.

Kilkenny Design Centre: Buy yourself something nice at the Kilkenny Design Centre. Here you can find handcrafted, artisanal gifts from all over the country. It’s like Etsy, but you can touch stuff before you buy. Bridie's General Store: From the outside, Bridie’s General Store looks like an old-fashioned store to buy groceries or souvenirs. And it is. But continue to the back and find a full service pub (indoor and outdoor seating). Talk about a winning combination. Kilkenny Castle: We promised you medieval architecture, and Kilkenny Castle delivered. Originally built in 1195, the castle has had a full makeover, and is open to the public for guided tours of its stunning interior and gardens.

Shamrock shake things up as you leave Kilkenny behind for the quintessential Irish countryside of County Kerry’s rolling hills, tranquil lakes, and plenty of sheep. On the way, stop at the famed Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone.

  • Board your private bus from Kilkenny to County Kerry, taking in the pristine Irish countryside along the way.
  • Stretch your legs—and your lips—at Blarney Castle. Legend has it that those who smooch the namesake stone are bestowed with that iconic Irish charm: the gift of gab.
  • Continue on to County Kerry and enjoy some free time to hit the pubs in the evening.

County Kerry Pubs: County Kerry is known for its raucous pub scene. Locals and visitors alike drink and sing with the bar band well into the wee hours of morning. Irish Cuisine: The Irish know comfort food. Try the shepherd’s pie, corned beef & cabbage, or Guinness beef stew.

Clear your camera roll and prepare to become Instagram famous as you traverse the must-see Ring of Kerry, stopping at each amazing panoramic vista, castle, or ocean view.

  • Encounter magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Lakes of Killarney, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, and more.
  • Pick your jaw off the floor after a day of unreal views, and head back to County Kerry for some nighttime free time.

Irish Whiskey Experience: The Irish Whiskey Experience in Killarney is the perfect masterclass for aficionados and new-comers alike. Buy a ticket and sign up for a class of your choice—from taste-testings to cheese plate pairings. Killarney National Park: Need more outdoors time? Take visit to the wondrous expanse of Killarney National Park. Where else can you find mountains, castles, woodlands, and waterfalls all in one place?

You’re off to Galway, a city famous for live music, street performers, and art shows. On the way, stop at the Cliffs of Moher for breathtaking views of the coastline.

  • Gawk at the Cliffs of Moher—limestone walls of rock that dominate the coast for five miles and rise to staggering heights of 700 feet
  • Arrive in beautiful Galway and take it all in on a walk along the banks of the River Corrib, gaze at the picture perfect Galway Bay, then get stoked for a night out in a new town.

Quay Street: Quay Street is a pub-crawler’s heaven. Pick a starting point, have a pint, and see where it takes you. Buskers: Busking, or street performing, is basically Galway’s favorite pastime. Catch the best fiddle player you’ve ever seen on one corner, and a blazing banjoist on the next.

Raise your glass, here’s to one more rowdy day in the British Isles! We know you’ll make it count. Before heading out for the day, take a moment to reflect on all the Guinness, rolling meadows, hearty food, and  craic  you’ve had. Ready? Go make some memories!

Eyre Square: The end of the rainbow in Galway leads to Eyre Square—a bustling center of shops, cafes, and art, though no known pot of gold sightings—yet. Irish Coffee: Vodka Red Bull’s Irish cousin packs a caffeinated punch of coffee, whiskey, and Bailey’s. Please enjoy responsibly.

Farewell Dinner Share some last laughs and revisit the best moments of the trip at this included farewell dinner with the group.

Take a ferry ride to the Aran Islands, where old traditions and iconic Irish countryside are hanging on strong. Don't miss Dún Aengus, a 2,000-year-old fort with walls that go right to the edge of a cliff high above the sea. Why wait? Save money by booking this optional excursion before your trip departs.

Slán libh, a cháirde! Translation: Goodbye, friends. Before you head to the airport, make sure to take one more group photo and grab that final drink. But this isn’t goodbye because you can always get the gang back together for another trip soon. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, we have a couple ways to keep your vacation going.

Ireland was the most amazing experience. The week was so fun. Shane made this trip an unforgettable one!

I loved Ireland!

As my first EF trip and my first time traveling alone in a different country, I had a blast in Ireland. I felt like I experienced everything the country had to offer and got some incredible memories there. Our tour director Shane was the best. In this post, we’re going over what it’s really like to travel with EF Ultimate Break with a detailed breakdown of the EF Ultimate Break Grand Tour of Ireland! We wanted to give you a detailed look at what an EF Ultimate break tour includes. Sometimes it can be hard to tell when reading through an itinerary what is included and what the days will actually look like. So we’re sharing how our EF ultimate break Grand Tour of Ireland trip experience!

What It’s Actually Like Traveling with EF Ultimate Break

Why we love traveling with ef ultimate break.

We traveled with EF Ultimate Break on the Grand Tour of Europe trip, and it was truly the trip of a lifetime! We love traveling with EF Ultimate Break because it removes so much of the detailed planning required for an international trip. EF Ultimate break also makes it super affordable to travel. Read more about why traveling with EF Ultimate break is worth it in our detailed post !

Are EF Ultimate Break Trips Customizable?

While there are a ton of activities included in a tour with EF ultimate break, there is free time built into the schedule. Thanks to having a full-time tour director, they can offer suggestions and even plan additional activities for the group if people are interested. For the grand tour of Ireland, our tour director planned several activities for us, and some of them were favorite things that we did! So remember this when booking a trip with EF Ultimate Break: having a tour director can open up opportunities to do things you wouldn’t have considered doing on your trip! And when planning your free time ahead, remember that there might be opportunities through your tour director.

How Do I prepare for an EF Ultimate Break Trip?

Before your departure, you will likely not have an hour-by-hour itinerary for each day of your trip. This is one small criticism of EF Ultimate Break that we have. We are BIG planners, so for us, we wanted to have a detailed itinerary before we left home on our trip. Especially because we wanted to plan some popular activities that required timed tickets. In retrospect, we probably should have tried to reach out to our tour director about it earlier. But at the same time, sometimes the tour directors don’t know the exact day’s schedule until a few days before. Sometimes, this was a little frustrating because we had ideas of what we wanted to do during our free time. Still, we weren’t sure of how long we were actually going to have, or when precisely that free time will start, or where we would be physically during the day when free time started (since walking or transit to destinations might be required). But when traveling with a tour group like EF Ultimate break, you have to be adaptable and flexible in this way since you’re on the tour’s schedule. Just something to keep in mind! Because of this, we recommend having several ideas for free time pre-departure so that when the time comes, you can make a decision.

In addition to researching activities for free time, we recommend researching restaurants as well before departure, especially if you’re a foodie or if you have dietary needs. Pam is a vegetarian, so we needed to find restaurants that had items on the menu she could eat. And Kathrine is a huge foodie, so she wanted to try the best local cuisine. So before departure, we put in time to find several restaurant options for each place we traveled. We didn’t want to be wasting time trying to find a restaurant the day off.

EF Ultimate Break App – Predeparture

Before your trip, you will added to your tour group on the EF Ultimate Break app. This is a great place to communicate with others before the trip, so you can plan free time and get to know everyone. Your tour director will also contact you through the app or by email with pre-departure information.

How Much Money Do I Need Per Day on an EF Ultimate Break Tour?

During your trip, you will pay for at least two meals per day, non-included tips, and any non-included activities. We recommend anywhere from $100-$200 per day, depending on how much shopping and additional activities you plan. But usually, $100/day is enough.

9 Days in Ireland Itinerary – EF Ultimate Break Grand Tour of Ireland

Here is a detailed look at our day-to-day itinerary

Day 1-2 – Dublin

The first two days of the Grand Tour of Ireland are the arrival and settle-in day. Almost all EF Ultimate break trips are like this. The first day is when you fly to your destination, get checked in to your first hotel or hostel, and then have the welcome dinner. Group members will arrive throughout the day. You might arrive early or later in the day, depending on where you are flying from. We arrived early, around 8 AM, in Dublin, so we had the whole day to explore! Which was great but also very tiring because of the jetlag. So, for us, our first day was a tourism day. That evening, we met with our tour director for introductions and then walked to our welcome dinner.

  • Free time
  • Self-guided walking tour – Temple Bar, Penny Bridge, downtown
  • Lunch in Temple Bar
  • Guided tour of Dublin Castle

Departure Day or continue on to another trip or extend your trip on your own

When booking with EF Ultimate break, you can fly home on the departure day, extend your trip by booking another trip back to back, or continue on your own. We opted to continue on our own with family to explore Northern Ireland. When doing this, we called EF Ultimate break support and told them our new departure date (and where we wanted to fly back from), and they rearranged our flight home. When continuing on your own like this, you are responsible for all other accommodations and travel aside from your flight back to the United States. For anyone not continuing to another trip, day 9 is a departure day where you are shuttled from Galway back to Dublin for your flight home.

Why you should book the Grand Tour of Ireland

The grand tour of Ireland is an excellent trip if you want to immerse yourself in a single country. It was a great way to see most of Ireland’s major attractions and destinations in a single trip. The Grand Tour of Ireland has a good balance of organized and free time. We personally liked how the trip was just over a week, so it didn’t feel too short, but it wasn’t too long away from home either. We appreciated that being only in one country, the bus rides were not long. The longest ride was 3 hours.

EF Ultimate Break’s Grand Tour of Ireland is a fantastic trip if you want to see beautiful landscapes, interact with wonderful people, eat amazing food, and drink good beer and whiskey!

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a brisk-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day - this includes city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • While visiting Blarney Castle, travelers have the opportunity to kiss the Blarney Stone. In order to kiss the Blarney Stone, travelers must climb 128 very steep, narrow stairs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

Climate Considerations

  • Travelers can expect cool, cloudy, and rainy days throughout the year, with occasional heatwaves in the summer months (June-September).

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!

  • A ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan is included in the price of the tour extension.

  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage or exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers need to be prepared to manage their own luggage during ferry transfers. This includes carrying your luggage up/down the boarding ramp, lifting luggage onto racks; and managing crowded spaces with other people and motor vehicles.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • We recommend packing your Insurance Card (from your primary insurance provider) in your carry on luggage.

  • We cannot guarantee that your hotel accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with the hotel once they are confirmed about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).

  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes one lunch and four dinners. Included meals may be plated set menus, buffet or family style depending on the location. Dinners include one glass of beer, wine, or soft drink and water, coffee and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Irish pubs serve up hearty lunches, such as the traditional stew of bacon and boiled cabbage. Soda bread is delicious, very filling and served with many meals. Nibble a scone at afternoon tea, with a pat of high-quality butter from County Kerry. Guinness stout is an international sensation, but locals might favor Murphy's, depending on where you are.
  • Dublin has seen something of a culinary revolution, and the city now boasts an impressive array of new restaurants offering exciting cuisine with continental Europe, Asian, and even American influences.
  • Scottish cuisine, on the tour extension, relies on readily available ingredients like game, dairy, and fish, with little use of exotic spices. Pickled kippers and smoked salmon are popular as well as hearty dishes like Scotch broth (stew of meat and root vegetables) and haggis (a savory pudding of sheep innards). Scotch whisky is a legendary local spirit, and Scottish ales are world-famous.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro in Ireland and the Pound sterling in the United Kingdom on the tour extension.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Ireland and the United Kingdom are on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is five hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.

Things to do, itineraries.

Packing Essentials:

• Carry on or checked luggage? In short -- this is really up to you and your personal travel style. I'm a carry-on backpack only girlie, but I know not everyone loves that life! You know yourself best!

If you do check a bag, I would suggest taking precautions/keep these things in mind:

    • Keep at least 1-2 changes of clothes in your carry on bag in case of your checked luggage getting lost. I will say that on 4/5 of my trips abroad, there was always at least one person who lost their luggage and had to wait 1-3 days for it to arrive.

    • Always keep medications and essentials in your carry on.

    • Be aware that you may have to lug your suitcase up flights upon flights of stairs, over cobblestone, sand, and who knows what else. Nothing wrong with this, just something to keep in mind.

• Adapter? You will need a Type C or F, however, my recommendation always is to use a universal adapter! This way, you can use and reuse in many places across many different countries without worry.

• Outerwear? one light waterproof jacket, emphasis on waterproof (not water resistant - I learned from experience that this is not the same jacket rating) if you're traveling during warmer months. I went in May, and a light jacket was sufficient. Colder months may call for bringing a bit thicker of a jacket just in case - still waterproof and/or dressing in layers. Columbia is a really good brand for waterproof jackets, and I have my favorites listed in my Amazon storefront below.

• Do I need hiking boots? In my opinion, no. Unless you're doing the Active Ireland trip, you will be just fine in sneakers! If you're an avid hiker and enjoy the comfort of your boots, then go for it!

• General packing? For a 9 day trip, you're most likely going to want 7-8 base outfits, though you could always pack more. As a general carry on tip, I like to pack clothes that are often interchangeable as tops/bottoms. This way, you're able to mix it up if you need to re-wear anything. Another option and way of packing I like and find helpful is to pack specific for each day and plan ahead. You know you want to wear your Gymshark outfit on day x, so that outfit is already planned for you. You know you want to be comfy on the plane perhaps, so that day is done. Etc, etc, day by day.

To list it all out, I would recommend bringing (minimum) 7-8 outfits (pants/tops combo or dresses/rompers), 8+ underwear and socks, toiletries, prescriptions, chargers and adapter, 1-2 jackets, and a trusty reusable water bottle. Of those outfits, most travelers like to wear something nicer for the Welcome Mixer and the Farewell Dinner. "Nice" in this case is totally up to you! Truly, whatever you're comfortable in will be just fine. If this means a full gown, so be it. If this means jeans and a nice top, that's absolutely okay too!

Because this trip is 9 days long, I'd personally recommend packing for that full amount of time, so that there's no worry of the hassle of doing laundry.

Free Time Suggestions:

• EFUB will take you to visit the Guinness Storehouse, St. Patrick's cathedral, and on a city walking tour. Highly recommend attending all of this! It really covers many of Dublin's staples.

• Trinity College: While EFUB will walk past here on tour, they will not go inside. If you decide to visit the inside as well, I'd recommend getting there early to beat the crowds! Hours vary depending on season, but admission ranges from 11-14 EUR.

• Jameson Distillery: Tired of beer? Swap it out for whiskey! Distillery tours tend to be quite elaborate, so you're likely in for a treat even if you're not super in love with whiskey tasting typically. Tours range from 45-90min costing 25-60 EUR per person.

• Temple Bar: Going to be honest here that this is known as a pretty overpriced, touristy place. However, it's fun to see at least once! I'd opt to not stay too long, and go check out other local pubs nearby.

• The Brazen Head: Ireland's oldest pub!

• Take your hostel's pub tour! Or if you're not at a hostel, check out one nearby and join in. They're a fun way to meet other hostel guests, and with a shot/drink at each stop, well... let's just say it pays for itself! Just stay safe!

• Kilkenny Castle: an iconic medieval castle that is the town's most visited site. In fact, it's actually one of the top visited in all of Ireland.

• St. Canice’s Cathedral & Round Tower: Ireland's second largest medieval cathedral. The tower is open to the public, and you can even climb the narrow, steep steps to arrive at a nice view of Kilkenny.

• Have a pint in a local pub! You'll see this is starting to be a trend, but this IS Ireland after all. Do as the locals do!

• The Canal Walk: Walk along the River Nore taking in more views of Kilkenny Castle. This is a great walk around sunset!

• You won't have a ton of time in Kilkenny, but it was a great, more off the beaten path town to visit!

County Kerry/Killarney:

• On your first day, you'll stop at the Blarney Stone in Blarney Castle! Be sure to kiss the stone for the "gift of gab"

• More pubs! I've said it once and will say it again: Ireland has some of the best and most lively pubs in the world! It's so much fun, and the Irish really can go all night long.

• Take a ghost tour! We did a ghost tour in Killarney, and it was entertaining for everyone. Medieval castles and cathedrals are already spooky enough, but add in the darkness and a good tour guide and you'll be ready to call Mystery Inc.!

• Killarney National Park: In addition to the park itself, you can also visit the Killarney House, Gardens, Muckross House, and Ross Castle. Opening hours vary for the houses, gardens, and castle, so be sure to check that before going.

• On your way here, you'll visit a sight that'll leave you wanting to see Moher of it... haha! Enjoy the Cliffs of Moher! You might just witness a marriage proposal like I did.

• Do a pub crawl here! If you didn't do one earlier in your trip, or even if you did, this is the perfect place for one! This was one of the funnest nights of my trip

• The Quay's Pub: Recommended by my TD (Gavin!!!) as his fave bar. However, do not listen to the Aussies in your pub crawl who mistake your accent for The KINGS Pub! Lol! It was actually a great mistake that made for both a great night and story, so much so that I'm recommending it next.

• The Kings Pub: As mentioned above, I did end up here by mistake, but it was a great stop on our endless night of pubs!

• Optional Add-on Excursion: Aran Islands

Highly recommend doing this excursion! It was THE most beautiful day on my tour. There were amazing views, and I got my favorite souvenirs here (lots of wool socks!). How was the ferry? For us, we got lucky with a calm day and had no issues. I have heard that it can be a bit rough if the waters are also rough on the day of the tour. If it gets too rough, they could unfortunately cancel, but this is for the safety of everyone involved.

The climate is characterized by frequent rainfall and changeable weather patterns throughout the year. Winters are generally mild, with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 8°C (39°F to 46°F), while summer temperatures average between 14°C to 20°C (57°F to 68°F) in coastal areas. On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

  • *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
  • Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
  • Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
  • Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

  • Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
  • Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .

Medications and First Aid:

  • Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
  • Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

  • Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
  • Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
  • A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

  • A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Chargers for each electronic you bring.
  • Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
  • Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
  • Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).

Miscellaneous:

  • A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
  • A small travel alarm.
  • A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
  • A travel pillow.
  • Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
  • Light sleepwear.
  • A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here !
  • Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).

Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

  • American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.
  • Type G outlets are used throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. Adapters are used to change the plug style from American-style plugs with two flat prongs to fit into these outlets, which take three rectangular prongs.
  • You will need a plug adapter and voltage converter to use your appliances in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
  • We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. Also, pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Hair dryers are standard accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

  • Air conditioning is commonly available in European and United Kingdom hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.
  • However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings.
  • Most hotels in Europe or the UK can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Airport transfers

Airport Transfers for Europe flights not arriving to or departing from London Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if:

  • You are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold
  • Your flight times coincide with the shuttle-coach transfer timings

Airport Transfers for Europe flights arriving to or departing from London Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days are complimentary only if:

  • You are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold
  • You booked your land tour and flights as a land/air package through GET. If you book your flights independently via London Heathrow, you can *purchase a transfer through us.

To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

Local Specialists

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

Your Coach Driver and Travel Director

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

It’s easy! You can search on our site by destination and departure date and browse all of our winter break trips until you find the perfect one. Or you can reach out directly to one of our Trip Consultants with questions. Our college-travel gurus will help you pick a destination, set you up with a payment plan, and generally make the entire process super easy.

I’m a broke college student! How do people afford EF Ultimate Break trips?

We want to make travel as accessible as possible for college students. Check out our payment plans to see all the ways we make it easy for you to book and pay for your winter break adventure. If you want to travel for free, sign up to become a Brand Ambassador . You’ll get discounts for you and your friends and could even earn free travel when you recruit more college travelers.

Any discounts if I book with a group of friends?

Booking your winter break adventure with a group will definitely save you some cash. If you’re planning to travel with your friends from college, call or chat with one of our Trip Consultants , they’ll make sure you all get a discount. You can also save money by referring other college students who book your trip (or even a different trip).

What makes a winter trip with EF Ultimate Break different?

We handle everything. Since you’re in college, we know you don’t have tons of time to plan out an itinerary, book travel, and find accommodations—so we do it all for you. Plus, every trip has an expert Tour Director who knows each destination inside and out. You’ll always know all the hot spots and hit all your bucket list items without having to do all the legwork.

Which EF Ultimate Break trips are best for winter?

Honestly? Any of them are perfect for a college winter break. But we have a few suggestions. If you want to escape the cold, get closer to the equator on a trip to Latin America —like to Costa Rica, Belize, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Want to ring in the new year in style? Try one of our New Year’s trips and celebrate across the pond in places like Paris, London, Barcelona, Amsterdam or Munich.

Can I book solo? My friends are being lame.

Definitely! This is group travel for college students, so you’ll meet tons of new people on your trip. Plus, about 60% of our travelers book solo , so you likely won’t be the only one.

Is an EF Ultimate Break trip safe?

Here’s what you should tell your parents: Health and safety is a major priority on our college trips. We’re approved by the World Travel & Tourism Council and have global staff available 24/7 to answer any questions or help with anything that should arise while on tour. Want info on COVID-19 protocols? Check out our safety FAQs here .

Do you have any holiday-specific trips?

We sure do. If you’ve always dreamt about traveling through Europe during your college winter break and seeing all the stunning Christmas markets and extravagantly decorated town squares—we’ve got you covered. Try one of our Christmas market trips and see what holiday spirit really means in countries like Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and beyond. They’re like the travel version of a rich glass of hot chocolate.
