The Chrysler Voyager is, simply put, a less expensive version of the Chrysler Pacifica. We're all for less expensive, but there are a few trade-offs. For example, you don't get the Pacifica's nifty second-row Stow 'n Go seats that easily fold into the floor when not needed. Instead, to create maximum cargo storage capacity in the Voyager, you must unlatch and remove the second-row seating.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2021 Chrysler Voyager L 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl 9A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Now, for the 2021 model year, there is further separation between a Pacifica and a Voyager. The Pacifica gets a styling refresh, wider availability of all-wheel drive, a new Pinnacle luxury trim level and more. The Voyager does not. Aside from improved safety technology, it is the same as it was in 2020.

Chrysler does, however, pass a torch to the 2021 Voyager. Now that the positively ancient Dodge Grand Caravan has gone to that big scrapyard in the sky, the Voyager stands as the least expensive minivan on the market. But you might find that spending a little more to get the more fully featured Pacifica, or other vans such as the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna, will be worth it in the long run.

There is perhaps no type of vehicle more pragmatic than the self-effacing minivan - a classic body style that encapsulates versatility and practicality for both people and their things. The 2021 Chrysler Voyager carries these attributes expertly and presents them in a relatively good-looking and contemporary package. It's a sleek but large vacation cruiser and family runabout that's livable and exceptionally commodious. Powering the sixth-generation Voyager is a strapping 287-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine that works as pragmatically as the minivan itself while also returning admirable fuel economy figures. With prodigious competitors such as the Toyota Sienna , Honda Odyssey , and even the Voyager's bigger sibling, the Chrysler Pacifica , all also being employed by soccer dads and moms all over the US, too, the Voyager's lack of creature comforts, conveniences and driver-assist features could prove detrimental to its market appeal.

When it comes to comfortable cruising, livability, safety, and reliability, it doesn't get better than a minivan. What the 2021 Chrysler Voyager adds to the package is value, as one of the more affordable offerings out there. It delivers confident but relaxed performance and is reasonably fuel-efficient, too, and it comes with all the basic essentials a family would need and want when travelling on the road for vacations or to soccer practice on weekday afternoons. It's modern, comfortable, and offers plenty of passenger and cargo space throughout its three-row seating and trunk. It may be a little too bare for some, as it does come with just the essentials at the entry-spec level and with just a few more additions in the higher-tier models, but this is what makes it so accessible. Both the NHTSA and the IIHS's review of the 2021 Chrysler Voyager resulted in a superb safety rating but we feel, being that the Voyager is a 5-door passenger car, that it could do with a far better selection of advanced driver assists. For those who appreciate the value-proposition over oodles of luxury, the Voyager minivan is a great option.

What Chrysler Voyager Model Should I Buy?

The entry-price of the 2021 Chrysler Voyager minivan comes in at $28,160, which is fairly attractive for a contemporary minivan. The mid-spec LX is almost $3,000 more, but it only gets automatic headlights, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, tri-zone climate control, and SiriusXM radio connectivity, so unless those features are ones that you really want, we'd suggest sticking with the L to get the most bang for your buck. It still comes standard with some decent features, including a seven-inch touchscreen with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The front seats both only get manual adjustability, but there's also keyless entry, cruise control, and air conditioning to provide comfort and convenience.

What's New for 2020?

The Voyager joins Chrysler's lineup for 2020, but we hesitate to call it "new." This seven-passenger minivan draws its name from a long-dead Plymouth model and everything else from the Pacifica.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2020 Chrysler Voyager starts at $28,480 and goes up to $31,290 depending on the trim and options.

Unless you're prepared to go with the barest-boned minivan on the market, we recommend you look at the LX. While neither trim provides much in the way of amenities, the LX at least offers a more compliant suspension tune than the L as well as automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels (instead of steel), three-zone manual climate control, and superior exterior lighting. Plus, if you want options such as remote start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, satellite radio, and/or a built-in DVD player to entertain the kiddos, the LX is the only way to go.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Mechanically, the Voyager is identical to the Pacifica, using the same 287-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given this van forgoes some of the features that weigh down its brother, the Voyager likely weighs less than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to beat that time. Don't hold your breath for a hybrid. Chrysler will reserve that powertrain for the pricier minivan in its lineup.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested achieved 31 mpg. The Chrysler vans both earn EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Voyager's 22 mpg combined score betters those of the Kia Sedona and Toyota Sienna and matches that of the Honda Odyssey , all chief competitors.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the exterior styling, powertrain, and chassis, the Voyager's interior mimics that of the Pacifica, albeit with fewer creature comforts. You won't find leather seats, in-dash navigation, automatic climate control, or power-sliding side doors here. What's more, the Voyager provides Stow 'n Go capability only for the rear bench seats. If you want the second row to fold into the floor, you'll need to shell out at least $35,540 for the base Pacifica. You can, however, tuck away valuables in the underfloor cubbies in front of the captain's chairs if you opt for the LX trim. Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able accommodate what its brother could (i.e., 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up).

Infotainment and Connectivity

Chrysler provides a 3.5-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center stack, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a six-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation. Either trim level provides Bluetooth streaming and integrated voice control, but only the Voyager LX allows for SiriusXM radio. Need to entertain the little ones? A rear-seat overhead DVD player can be had on the LX for $995.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Voyager achieved a five-star rating —the highest possible—from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in each of its crash-test measures. Chrysler attributes the van's crashworthiness, at least in part, to the abundance of high-strength steel in the Voyager's body structure. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has yet to test the Voyager, but the Pacifica performed well in most areas . Looking for driver-assistance features ? You won't find many in the Voyager and nothing of the like is offered as standard. Key safety features include:

• Available rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking
• Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chrysler's warranty coverage is fairly typical for the class. The Sienna offers more value here in the form of a two-year/25,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

The 2021 Chrysler Voyager has a mix of soft and hard plastics in its cabin. Cargo and passenger room are both good – but not great – for its class. The infotainment system is easy to use, but the Voyager lacks many of the tech and safety features found in rivals.

While the Voyager has plenty of storage space for your belongings, its cargo capacity of 32.3 cubic feet behind the third row, 87.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and 140.5 cubic feet with both rows folded down is smaller than what you’ll find in other minivans . There is no available power or hands-free liftgate, and while the third row can fold into the floor, you’ll have to physically remove the second-row seats to create maximum cargo space.

The Voyager seats up to seven people on cloth upholstery. The base L trim has second-row bench seats and third-row Stow ‘n Go seating. The LX trim adds an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and second-row bucket seats with underfloor storage bins. The LX can also be had with heated front seats and a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel.

Head- and legroom are plentiful up front. They’re decent in the back two rows as well, although there are roomier vans in the class. For easier access to the third row, you can get the second row as a pair of bucket seats.

For installing child safety seats, there are four complete sets of LATCH connectors, two each for the second and third rows.

Interior Features

In addition to a rearview camera, the Voyager comes with Chrysler’s Uconnect 4 infotainment system. It features a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Satellite radio and a rear-seat overhead DVD player are available.

Using Uconnect is easy, and it has plenty of physical buttons and knobs, most of which are placed within easy reach for the driver. A rear-seat entertainment system is available, but other options are few and far between.

Available safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and rear parking sensors.

This budget version of the Pacifica only offers just key advanced safety features

This new minivan is positioned between the long-running Dodge Grand Caravan and the current Chrysler Pacifica, on which it's based. The Voyager is essentially the two cheapest trims of the Pacifica, the L and LX, spun off under a new model name. (The fleet-only LXi version is headed primarily for rental car lots.)

The Voyager is available with rear- and side-entry conversions to accommodate the needs of wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

Here’s what we know so far.
