Jungle Safari and tigers

Jungle Safari starts from December till monsoons. Stay is available at Chikhaldara hill station which is 25km away from melghat tiger reserve. Safari gypsys are available from Chikhaldara which costs around 3000 for 6 people . Safari timings are from 6:30am to 10:30am and 3pm to 5pm. We started from Chikhaldara at 5:30am from Chikhaldara and reached the spot by 6:30am. Weather in December is very chilling approximately 7 to 10 Deg C. If planning to visit and go for open Jeep jungle safari then winter wears are must. Jungle is very beautiful and pleasant. We had hired a safari and guide they were very cooperative and helpful. We spotted tiger foot prints, tiger cub, peocockes ... There are other animals like hyanas, leopards, deers, black indian bear, gawa, sambar etc can be spotted easily... Beautiful place I would suggest all to must visit this place ... Very peaceful..

I went to MelGhat Tiger Reserve. MelGhat Tiger Reserve is one of the famous tiger reserves in India which is the ideal destination for wildlife buffs. Nestled amidst the green and rough terrains of the Satpuras on the Gavilgarh Hill, Melghat Tiger Reserve allures wildlife lovers from all over. It is great place to go.

Tiger sightings at Melghat are rare because of the terrain. But you can ride your luck if you are a die hard enthusiast and have done the usual circuit of Kanha, Ranthambore, Corbett, Tadoba, etc. The forest is relatively virgin so you can feel the jungle and live by it. The lodging facilities around the place are ordinary. This place needs some serious investment by the Government or Wild Life organizations to bring it at par with the rest

Melghat tiger 🐅 reserve is great place to visit and have a close encounter with nature with beautiful roads and pleasant wether with variety of animals u can also visit a hill station chikhaldara to enjoy sunsets and beautiful whether for more details u can contact me Deepak raut-7843095227

The must-visit places near Chikhaldara include the Melghat tiger reserve, Ambadevi Temple and the Hurricane Point. The Meghat Tiger Reserve is spread over 1600 square kilometers. This tiger reserve houses animals such as 75 tigers,150 snake species and 250 bird species. Though the tigers are a rear scene, other animals such as Sambar and Peacocks are normal scenes. The forest ride is amazing and the open jeep crosses rivers just like we see in Tyre ads.

As Melghat Tiger Reserve celebrates its 50th year, we’ve curated five expert-certified reasons why you should head to this unique forest

5 reasons why Melghat Tiger Reserve is perfect for your next jungle safari

The reserve is working towards the conservation of the royal Bengal tiger species that has now increased to 50

Located deep in the Amravati district of eastern Maharashtra, Melghat was one of the first nine forests in India to be declared a tiger reserve in 1973 — Kedar Gore, director of Corbett Foundation informs us. That makes 2023 the 50th year since its founding. Keen to learn more, we reached out to Indrajit Nikam, Melghat’s assistant conservator, forests, who gives us five reasons why this verdant forest should be next on your safari plans.

1. Diverse fauna: Melghat is an excellent tiger habitat with a good number of sambar deer, Indian gaur and other prey species, as well as mammals such as the leopard, sloth bear, wild dog, barking deer, ratel, nilgai and the four-horned antelope in its area. The endangered and endemic forest owlet is a great attraction for wild-lifers, in addition to other species of birds.

2. Excellent tourist facilities: There are several tourist facilities across the forest like Semadoh, Kolkas, Shahnur and Chikhaldara. These have to be pre-booked from their online sites as available rooms are not guaranteed during the holiday season. The hill station of Chikhaldara, that lies at an altitude of 1,100 feet, offers a scenic view of the Melghat forest and its stunning topography.

3. Aamner and Narnala Fort: Melghat is home to two forts that are located in the Amravati and Akola districts respectively. Aamner fort, built on the confluence of the Tapi and Gadga river, served as a watch tower. Meanwhile, Narnala fort is named after the Rajput ruler Narnal Singh who ruled the area in the 16th century.

Sloth bears and (right) forest owlets are some rare species in Melghat

4. Other adventures: The Azmari area of the reserve has been turned into an adventure park with many interesting activities. The main attractions include zip-lining in a dense forest.

5. Botanical garden: A botanical garden in Chikhaldara has several species of flora that can prove as an educational tour for children and be a great space to relax, Nikam reveals.

Heat Alert: Day-time temperatures in Melghat rise up to 45 degree Celsius, so plan your trip accordingly. If you want to combat the heat, carry necessary gear, medicines and enough water for the outdoors to keep yourself safe and  hydrated.

Keep in mind

Nikam mentions that Melghat’s forests are also home to diverse flora that one should enjoy and pay attention to. “Visit with your children. Take them to see the flowers and plants. It will not only be educational but fun as well.”

>> Do not discard plastic in the forest as the animals may ingest it causing themselves serious harm.

>> Also, do not feed human food to the animals. Keeping a safe distance from them is for your and the animals’ safety.

>> Maintain silence while in the forest. Loud music and noise may disrupt the peaceful forest environment and make animals anxious and afraid.

>> The hills that act as forest cover are home to five tributaries of Tapti River, which also flows through the reserve. These provide a natural source of water for the forest animals. >> It is the first and largest forest of Maharashtra to be declared a reserve. >> Melghat now has a tiger count of 50 and is progressively working towards increasing the count of the species. >> The 132-year-old Belkund Bridge in the depths of the forest is still in good shape.

How to reach?

A 12-hour trail journey to Amravati via the Vidarbha Express from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and another 85-km drive by Melghat will take you to the lush greenscape that covers 1,677 km of area. The nearest airport to Melghat is the Babasaheb International Airport in Nagpur, which is a three-hour drive from the reserve.

Important places.

Melghat Gate.

Melghat Tiger Reserve is located on southern offshoot of the Satpura Hill Range in Central India, called Gavilgarh hill in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The high ridge running east-west which has its highest point at Vairat (1178 m. above msl.), forms the southwestern boundary of the Reserve. It is a prime habitat of the tiger. The forest is tropical dry deciduous in nature, dominated by teak Tectona grandis.  The Reserve is a catchment area for five major rivers viz. Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga and Dolar, all of which are tributaries of the river Tapti. The northeastern boundary of

the Reserve is marked by the Tapti river. Melghat is the prime biodiversity repository of the state.

The sudden slope of Melghat form the part of catchment of river Purna. The three major tributaries originating from Melghat region and draining into river Purna are Chandrabhaga, adnani and wan. Chikhaldara is located on high sudden platau at an altitude of 1100 ms. above MSL.

Nature has offered protection to Melghat in the form of a rugged topography with only a few entry points. The Makhala, Chikhaldara, Chiladari, Patulda and Gugamal are the large plateaux amidst rugged terrain. Contiguity of forests in Satpura Hill Range guarantees the long-term conservation potential of the area. Conservation History : Melghat area was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1974. Presently, the total area of the Reserve is around 1677 sq. km. The core area of the Reserve, the Gugarnal National Park with an area of 361.28 sq. km., and buffer area of the Reserve, the Melghat Tiger Sanctuary with an area of 788.28 sq. km. (of which 21.39 sq. km. is non-forest), were together re-notified by the state government in 1994 as Melghat Sanctuary. The remaining area is managed as a ‘multiple use area’. Previously, Melghat Tiger Sanctuary was created in 1985 with an area of 1597.23 sq. km.  Gugarnal National Park was carved out of this Sanctuary in 1987. Archaeological Richness : The Gavilgarh fort on the Chikhaldara plateau and Narnala fort abetting southeastern part of Melghat Tiger Reserve add to the aesthetic value of the area. Visitors to these archaeological monuments enjoy the serene forests in the backdrop.
