Cleveland Tour Action Irons Review – Still Good And Forgiving For High Handicappers?

cleveland tour action reddit

“The Cleveland Tour Action irons were made to resemble blades but provide the forgiveness of cavity back irons.”

There were a few different iterations of the Cleveland Tour Action irons but for this review, I tested the Cleveland Tour Action 7 irons. This is the latest, and some would argue, greatest version of the Tour Action irons.

With these irons, Cleveland was really trying to bridge the gap between game improvement and players performance. Did they succeed? Are the Cleveland Tour Action irons any good for high handicappers? Read on to find out.

Are Cleveland Tour Action Irons Still Good?

“The Cleveland Tour Action irons have a very unique feature that I don’t think I’ve seen in any other irons.”

At least, not in any irons I can remember. The feature I’m talking about is the “Micro Cavity.” There are about five little chambers bored into the back of the topline. The purpose of these tiny chambers is to lighten the top portion of the head so that the center of gravity is shifted downward.

This design also helps to move more weight to the perimeter of the head where it can provide more forgiveness. The Cleveland Tour Action irons also feature the Vibration Absorption Technology that Cleveland actually patented.

The Cleveland Tour Action irons are cavity backs with progressive offset. At address, you can see the cavity undercut jut out a bit behind the relatively thin top line. You’re not going to be fooled into thinking you’re playing blades but they do have a clean look for cavity backs.

The Cleveland Tour Action irons also have a healthy face depth. There is enough real estate up and down the face to eliminate your thin shots. However, I did have some issues with digging.

Overall though, the Cleveland Tour Action irons have a light, wieldy feel. I found myself falling into a groove with them relatively quickly.

Are the Cleveland Tour Action Irons Forgiving for High Handicappers?

cleveland tour action reddit

“The best thing about the Cleveland Tour Action irons for high handicappers is that they have a big sweet spot.”

After just a few swings, I found the rhythm of these irons and was able to hit the expansive sweet spot consistently. The offset is generous in the long irons which didn’t look great to me; but it did provide excellent forgiveness.

The combination of the pronounced offset and the large sweet spot made the long irons in this set very easy to manage. And the long irons are notorious for giving neophyte players trouble so I would say that these irons are forgiving for high handicappers.

The large cavity back design helps to push mass towards the perimeter of the head. This stabilizes much of your common mis-hits.

The distance I was getting from these irons was a bit above average. With the 7-iron, I was averaging 158.7 yards. The dispersion was also reasonably tight when I stayed within the scoring lines.

And while the sweet spot is wide and hard to miss, if you do manage to miss it, don’t expect much forgiveness. On shots that missed the sweet spot, my ball was picking up a ton of spin and losing a lot of speed. As a result, my divergence widened and my carry distance dropped.

Cleveland Tour Action Vs Cleveland Launcher XL Halo Irons

“The Cleveland Launcher XL Halo’s are hybrid irons with a hollow body design.”

The Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons also come stock with counterbalanced shafts. The Launcher XL Halo irons are extremely forgiving but they offer no workability. Also, if you aren’t used to counterbalanced shafts, they may feel weird to you. I would only recommend the Cleveland Launcher XL Halo irons to pure beginners.

Cleveland Tour Action First Impressions

cleveland tour action reddit

“I liked the fact that the Cleveland Tour Action irons did in fact offer a moderate degree of workability in a forgiving iron.”

They don’t really look like blades which is something I was expecting and hoping for. But I was able to work the ball left and right to a moderate degree. They aren’t massive irons. Instead, they have a moderate head size which strikes a really good balance between forgiveness and versatility.

Cleveland Tour Action Selling Points

  • Micro cavities
  • Progressive offset
  • Good face depth
  • Vibration absorption system
  • Large sweet spot

Cleveland Tour Action Key Technology

Vibration absorption system.

The VAS is designed to smooth out those harsh vibrations when you miss the sweet spot. I had no problem with the feel of these irons. They felt smooth and consistent all across the face.

Micro Cavities

The small cavities bored behind the top line work to redistribute weight low in the club head. They also appear to be filled with some sort of polymer or urethane which may contribute to the smooth feel.

Deep Face Profile

The deep face profile makes it much more difficult to hit the ball thin. For me though, the same feature was causing me to dig more than usual on the fairway.

Cleveland Tour Action Loft & Lie

Who should buy the cleveland tour action irons.

cleveland tour action reddit

“This was a tricky one to decide.”

First of all, I would say that Cleveland did in fact do a good job of making an iron that was at once forgiving and workable. The Cleveland Tour Action irons are inherently forgiving and it takes extreme mis-hits to affect their accuracy.

They can be point-and-shoot irons, and for more skilled players, they can be worked side-to-side a bit. So in the end, I suppose these irons would work for high and mid handicappers. Pretty much anyone in the 12-24 handicap range.

Distance: 96/100

Forgiveness: 96/100, workability: 96/100, overall performance: 96/100, value: 97/100.

I have an old Cleveland tour action REG 588 60* wedge. It does not state the bounce on the club anywhere. I really liked the club but lost faith in it some time back. Then I played it again a few weeks ago, mostly out of the sand, and I was killer with it. Anyone know what the bounce on that club was?

SW

Does it have red dots on it anywhere 1= low bounce etc... Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk

Check that, I pulled mine outta the bag...no dots. Sorry dude! Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk

Review of The Cleveland Golf Tour Action Box Set

cleveland tour action reddit

The Cleveland Tour Action Box set is a complete set of starter clubs including a 460cc titanium driver (forged), with seven oversize irons (5-iron through sand wedge), an oversize fairway wood and a hybrid utility ironwood. The set also includes a blade-style putter and nylon-padded Cleveland Golf stand bag. Clubheads are made of stainless steel with the irons available fitted with steel or graphite shafts. Woods have graphite shafts, while clubs contain soft Cleveland rubber grips.

The Cleveland Tour Action Box Set contains some snappy clubs. Each has mid-to-high launch angles and gets the ball up nicely. Clubs are well-built and durable. The irons are comfortable; the woods, especially the ironwood, are capable of straight shots and can be extremely forgiving. The putter is easy to line up and produces true rolls with minimal skids, while Cleveland bag is attractive and functional.

What some might feel is lacking are more durable shafts in the driver and fairway wood. While the irons are good-to-excellent performers for the recreational player, woods have the tendency of producing sprayed shots, especially if a player gains confidence out of the gate.

Bottom Line

The Cleveland Tour Action Box Set can make for the perfect starter set for any beginner. Irons are forgiving and the woods are dependable under controlled playing conditions with slower swings. Depending on the retailer, the outfit is being sold for between $500 and $600 per set (2009 pricing).

I cant find any information about this wedge I recently saw it at golf galaxy. Is Cleveland making a wedge exclusively for Dicks? Has anyone tried it. I have always played Cleveland Wedges but the last one I liked was the 588 RTX

I have not seen one in person, so it is impossible for me to tell how they differ from the RTX line. Most likely has fewer grind/bounce options and lacks the Rotex face milling.

Any further insight into these wedges? Anyone using them? Thoughts?

Great price at the moment here in Canada, so debating these over the $200+ wedges from TM, Titleist, etc. Mid0handicap player, so unsure I'll even tell the difference.

Cheers! 🍻

i bought the 50" standard 9 bounce on an impulse at DSG. i have only used it two rounds but it feels every bit as good as anything else. It is without the rtx milling. For the price i would rate it as a good/grest deal

My buddy plays them and I played his wedges for 18 holes As a point of reference and comparison I play either Ping 3.0 or PM Grind Mack Daddy wedges depending on the course. If you do not try to hit hop and stop shots from close to the green, then the CG One will probably fine. when you hit them crisp they will still check up a bit, it is just harder to get that hop and stop action from close to the green, especially compared to the wedges in my bag. But on the fairly firm desert greens here in Phoenix I can still use his CG One 56 and throw a 15-30 yard chip  80-85% to the hole and it will check and release to the hole nicely.

Just picked up a 56° today and will test it tonight. Needed to replace my 588 DSG RTX+ that is completely worn out. I’ll let you know how if it lives up to Cleveland Golf standards

I hit this in store. For the price it is very good. Basically RTX lite. No bounce or grind options within lofts. Spin on the sim was good but not great. Whole club felt lighter in general.

For reference, I tried and returned the Kirkland wedges. These were better.

However, you won't confuse it with an RTX if you spin the ball.

If your game doesn't need a $150 wedge bc you're not backing it up on 80 yard shots, this is more than adequate.

Cleveland TA7 Iron Review

JeffreyD

By JeffreyD , April 6, 2011 in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting

Recommended Posts

So today I went and demo'd several sets of irons. I was in the market for a set that is a little more forgiving than my Titleist AP2's. I have no complaints at all on the AP2's, I just don't play/practice quite as much as I did when I first got them and I need/want something a little more forgiving.

I tested the following clubs:

1. Cleveland CG16 Black Pearl (7 iron)

2. Cleveland TA7 (7 iron)

3. Taylormade Burner 2.0 (7 iron)

To be honest, I loved all 3 clubs. It was a toss up for sure. The two things that drove me to go with the TA7's (aside from the look of the club) was price and feel. I got a full set for $320 with my PGA Superstore membership (and they are only $399 normal retail price). I was super stoked about the price! They also have a great feel to them. The other 2 clubs seemed to just bounce/launch the ball off the club face, which is fine if you NEED the distance. It was definitely cool to see 190-195 yards pop up on the screen hitting a 7 iron, but I was not looking for that. I was looking for feel, as I am a big time feel player. When going to a slightly more forgiving set of irons, I think keeping the feel of a forged set of irons is ideal. I got this with the TA7's. My 7 iron yardage with them was consistently 178-182 yards, which is slightly longer than I hit the 7 iron with the AP2's. The other clubs (like I said before) were overkill.

I will be playing my first 18 hole round with the irons tomorrow. I will follow up in this thread with more info as I go.

Titleist 909F2 13.5* (Oban Devotion 7)

Titleist 906F4 15.5* (Aldila VS Proto 80-S)

Sweet, I've been looking at those irons. Did you get them with the uniflex shat? Thats all I seem to see online.

Thanks for the review. They look like beautiful clubs. I somehow missed on these. The price is excellent. Have you tried the Cleveland Hybrid irons as well? Opinion on those?

Originally Posted by mheier Sweet, I've been looking at those irons. Did you get them with the uniflex shat? Thats all I seem to see online.

The shafts in mine are Action Lite stiff flex, which is the standard steel shaft Cleveland offers.

Originally Posted by stjames Thanks for the review. They look like beautiful clubs. I somehow missed on these. The price is excellent. Have you tried the Cleveland Hybrid irons as well? Opinion on those?

I have not. I am not much of a hybrid guy......yet lol. I prefer the traditional look and feel. Not to toot my own horn, but I also do not feel like I need a hybrid set. I am 21 years old and hit the ball fairly long with a decent amount of control. Hopefully that doesn't come across as me being arrogant.

Don't forget to put a review in the equipment section.  Enjoy those sticks, I really do like Cleveland's products.

Cleveland ta5 irons review: are they worth the investment [updated may 2024].

If you are a golf enthusiast , you know that having the right set of clubs can make all the difference in your game. Cleveland TA5 irons have been a popular choice for avid golfers for many years. In this review, we take a closer look at these clubs to see if they are worth the investment.

Introduction

The Cleveland TA5 irons first hit the market in the early 2000s, but they are still in high demand among golfers today. These clubs are known for their exceptional performance, forgiveness, and feel. They are suitable for players of all skill levels, from beginners to professionals.

Design and Technology

The Cleveland TA5 irons are made of a forged titanium alloy, which creates a soft and responsive feel. The cavity back design of the clubs makes them more forgiving, allowing golfers to improve their accuracy and distance. The unique Tri-keel sole design of these clubs helps to minimize turf drag and promote a smooth and easy swing.

One of the unique features of the Cleveland TA5 irons is their Vibration Dampening System or VDS. This technology helps to reduce unwanted vibrations, giving golfers a smooth and comfortable feel on every shot.

Performance

The Cleveland TA5 irons have been lauded for their exceptional performance on the golf course. They offer a great balance of distance, accuracy, and forgiveness. Golfers can expect to hit longer shots with less effort while maintaining great control over their ball flight.

These clubs are also easy to use, even for beginners. They have a large sweet spot that makes it easier to hit the ball, even if you don’t make perfect contact. The clubs’ smooth and comfortable feel also makes them a joy to swing, which can enhance your overall enjoyment of the game.

Pros and Cons

Like any golf club , the Cleveland TA5 irons have their pros and cons. Here are a few things to consider before investing in these clubs:

  • Excellent performance, distance, and accuracy
  • Forgiving, with a large sweet spot
  • Comfortable feel and great feedback
  • Suitable for players of all skill levels
  • The older design may not appeal to some golfers
  • The clubs can be expensive, particularly if purchased new
  • The VDS technology may not make a significant difference for some golfers

Overall, the Cleveland TA5 irons are an excellent option for golfers looking for a high-performing, forgiving, and comfortable set of clubs. They offer exceptional distance, accuracy, and feedback, making them a great choice for players of all skill levels. While they may not be the most modern clubs on the market today, they still hold up well and can make a significant impact on your game.

So if you’re looking for a reliable and high-performing set of irons, the Cleveland TA5 irons are worth considering. With their exceptional design, technology, and performance, they may just be the key to unlocking your true golfing potential.

This charming corner of the U.S. has many secrets, from a history of innovation to hidden art that’s poised to dazzle. When we live in a certain city for so long, we often grow blind to its most incredible features… they become mundane and familiar rather than awe-inspiring. However, now’s a great time to rediscover all that the city has to offer! Viator , a TripAdvisor company, offers many unique Cleveland tours and experiences that will transform your relationship with the city. Wonderful Article! tstoto tstoto tstoto tstoto

The Cleveland TA2 irons likely featured a cavity back design. Cavity back irons typically provide a blend of forgiveness and playability, making them suitable for a wide range of golfers, including those with mid to high handicaps. by tstoto

No weaknesses. All very good.

It was time to think about new equipment. As a fan of standard hybrids I was relatively sure that hybrid irons are a good choice for me. Cleveland has the most experience with hybrid irons as they just launched the third generation. commercial truck suspension repair Richmond

It also works well as a puttel. A real side benefit is I only carry this club now so it is really easy to walk and enjoy the game. Thanks Taylor Made Barrie Exhaust system repair

During a complete reworking of my swing and game, I bought these used (7.5 of 10 rating) Cleveland TA2 3-PW, Dynamic Gold S400 flex, Cleveland Cord Grips on an Ebay auction for $87 including shipping. I expected difficulty in swing and impact feel, distance lost in the S400 flex and sore hands from the cord grips. My expectations and the expert “golf equipment salesmen” were absolutely wrong. These may very well be my version of Leo Kottke’s “Student Prince.” Golf is fun again! I’ve played for 52 years. I switched to game improvement heads and regular to senior shaft flexes in my late 50’s. My handicap devolved from single to two digit. Distance stayed the same and accuracy became erratic. With the Cleveland TA2 set, my accuracy immediately came back; but, the feel was something I had forgotten was possible. Bad miss hits, fly ugly and you feel the vibrations, but slight miss hits fly nearly as far and stay on target. I can easily work the ball left to right and control it low and high. With focus, I can work it right to left with some control and still control flight height. Most important, from 3-PW, when I focus, these fly online to the target. When I focus and make good flush contact (about 80-90% of the time, so far), I have gained half a club in length and the impact feels like soft butter. The normal flight trajectory may be slightly lower. I haven’t played enough holes to rate the backspin, but so far they are stopping near where the ball hits with a slight release forward. That is what I prefer and try to achieve. Chipping and pitching performance with all clubs is solid and accurate with no distance control problems. I highly recommend these clubs to the experienced (decades of play) mid to low handicap players who continue to work to improve and keep their game. I wish Cleveland was still making them, but they are available on Ebay. I’d wish you luck on your auction, but you may be bidding against me as I buy a back-up set.

I've started out with Mizuno TZOID irons, but 9 years ago I bought these TA2 with TT s300 shaft. The feel hitting these clubs provided a lot of good feed back and felt very buttery. I was longer, but I believe it was the shaft matched with my swing speed (92 MPH 6 iron). I switched to a set of Callaway x forged 2007 ironset after an accident for a lighter and softer shaft (sl light r300). Now that I have my swing and strength back, I have found even more feel and control with the set. I find I can hit the 4 iron very reliably now 192 yards, and work the direction without much effort. My pw goes about 124 yards but the loft is 46 degrees. I have to say much of the feel is the heavier s300 shaft and the heavier heads. I played a friends Taylormade Rac CB TP forged but it felt too light or less solid. I believe my grip pressure and my slow loading of the irons gives me the best feel with this setup. The irons feel like your able to strike with the force of a MB iron but with forgiveness on off centre hits. Hit it a little thin and you hands will tell you right away. The 8625 carbon steel is pretty good relative to 1025 carbon steel. The is the standard now when I look for a set as the pw is worn. Anyone with a fresh set out there :)

These are wonderful irons, tremendous feel, not very forgiving, but look SOOO good... I bought these cheap on eBay as training irons, the range balls murder your grooves. Because these are harder to hit, my ball sticking has improved massively with my playing clubs on the course. But the short irons are so good they might sneak into my bag.. If your a range monster and want to improve your iron play, grab a set of these babies.

A bit rubbish really... Sent emails but no reply

I have been golfing for about 14 years now and i have to admit I have played with just about every set of irons there is. back in the early days my first set of irons were made by PowerBilt and the model was levellume (small heads by todays standards) and they were the blade/MS design, very hard irons to hit for a beginner. i've played these irons for the first 4 years of my career, to this day i have never found anything that matches the irons i fell in love with years ago till now. the cleveland TA 2's are what i've been looking for all this time and as i've have stated i've tried them all. a friend of mine had this set of irons and asked me to try them, well long story short i now own them. i have replaced the shafts with tru-temper dynamic gold (steel), the club builder was somewhat supprized he didn't know why i spent so much on an old set of irons. well all i had to do was show him my handicap index after about 3 weeks using these irons, broke 70 three times in as many weeks not bad. these irons are very accurate, the control of a blade is outstanding, the irons have the stability of a cavity back not to hard or soft all built into one iron, the distance is outragious i'm 12 yards longer than my old set of irons (taylormade supersteel). working the ball is alittle harder than i expected the ball wants to go straight if it does draw/fade its only 3 or 4 feet from center not much. the cleveland company has won this golfers heart and soul, i think that i may try some of the other irons but for now TA 2's got me. anyone know where i can get a newer set of TA 2's?. well people, old farts like me need alittle help distance wise, these irons will do just that for you so, get out there and demo a set i think you'll be just as happy.

everything from clone to ping and in between.

  1. How to tell what the bounce is on my 60* Tour Action Reg. 588 ...

Depends on the purpose of the wedge. I had a Cleveland 588 60 as well, and 3* bounce made it super easy to hit flop shots, but I had somewhat of a tendency to hit it a little fat on full swings. Same thing with a Vokey 60.04 I had. I was reduced to only using my 60 around the greens.

  2. Taylormade 360 Irons vs Cleveland Tour Action TA5 Irons Question

So I have playing golf for a couple of months now and have been using Taylormade 360 Irons that I inherited from my grandpa. I went to a garage sale yesterday and bought Cleveland Tour Action TA5 Irons for $20. I tried them out today at my house and I am kinda split between them.

  3. Anyone still gaming the original Cleveland Tour Action 588's?

The pair of wedges I've currently got in play are working well, so I'm reluctant to change, but I still have a fondness for the old 588s. Quote. Nike Ignite 410 10.5° Grafalloy Blue X. 4. Cleveland Tour Action Irons Review

"The Cleveland Tour Action irons were made to resemble blades but provide the forgiveness of cavity back irons." There were a few different iterations of the Cleveland Tour Action irons but for this review, I tested the Cleveland Tour Action 7 irons. This is the latest, and some would argue, greatest version of the Tour Action irons.

  5. Cleveland 588 Wedges: Editor Review

The wedges are forged from 1025 Carbon Steel, which provides great feel. The area the Cleveland 588 really shines is the Tour Concept Shaft. They feel fantastic and really help keep the ball flight down a touch but they increase spin at the same time. It is a great alternative to the Dynamic Gold Spinner.

  6. Cleveland Tour Action 900 BRZ

Here's how it works. Cleveland Tour Action 900 BRZ. This beautifully compact head is unbeatable for feel and performance from short range. Higher handicapper might be scared of the small face that requires a very accurate strike. Cleveland is a real favourite among the professionals and its not hard to see why.
