Colonial Havana

Private city tour in colonial havana.

Visit to Old Havana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, led by an independent tourist guide, philologist and professor of Literature at the University of Havana.

It is a carefully designed itinerary to get to know the most charming places in colonial Havana, with a varied tour on foot and in typical Cuban transport through the main streets and squares of the historic center, with transit stops in highly selected places: from historic buildings to a selection of cafes, art galleries and Cuban design shops off the beaten track.

Catedral Habana Vieja

The tour includes lunch and a visit to the Morro Cabaña Military Historical Park, to enjoy the most spectacular views of Havana.

More about Havana

If you want to get to know Havana, we suggest that you start with a journey towards its roots, towards its founding history on the shores of a bay full of legends and charm.

For lovers of history and origins, there is no possibility of visiting Havana without visiting its main colonial buildings. Civil, military and religious, the buildings that survive today from past stages attest to a city that resists the passing of time, and make it, probably, the most authentic colonial city in America.

viajes culturales a cuba

Unlike the rest of the country's colonial cities, Havana did not follow the pattern that governed the life of the villas around a square or park, but was structured into four main squares, with various functions: military (Plaza de Armas ), commercial (Plaza de San Francisco de Asís), social (Plaza Vieja) and religious (Plaza de La Catedral).

These squares are points that draw the path to follow, a map that superimposes tradition and the most daily reality. Their encounter is never separated from the discovery of the life that is hidden in the narrow streets that lead to them; some full of music and bustle, others more solitary and mysterious.

TOUR DETAILS

El arte y arquitectura de Cuba

The starting point of our tour of colonial Havana is located in one of the main avenues that connects the municipalities of Centro Habana and Old Havana. We are talking about Calle Reina, and specifically they will start from the neo-Gothic church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . They will be able to enter this the highest church in Havana and take pictures of its interiors, especially its beautiful stained glass windows that represent the life of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, passages from the life of Ignacio Loyola and some Jesuit saints.

Later, in a fun taxi-bike ride you will go from the church all over Reina Street to the Havana Capitol , the zero point of the city. They will learn about the history of this property and will be able to take pictures.

Paseo de Prado

From there they will walk all over the Paseo del Prado , passing through the Central Park, the Gran Teatro de La Habana, the Inglaterra Hotel, the Telegrafo Hotel and the Parque Central hotel. They will lead to the Museum of the Revolution and there they will be able to learn about the history of the old Presidential Palace. If it is of interest to customers, they can enter the museum.

Few meters from the museum is the Plaza de la angel hill and the Church of the Holy Angel . Until there they will walk and they will be able to know one of the most charming squares of colonial Havana, enjoying a tasty Cuban coffee on the terrace of Café Jacqueline Fumero. They will enjoy a space where the charm of a colonial city comes together with the contemporary Cuban design that is exhibited in the aforementioned café.

La fuerza.

You will walk towards the Main Square , where the founding site of the former Villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana is located, and where the former center of administrative and military power of the Island in the colonial period lied. Do not miss the opportunity to visit The Temple and perform the ritual that Havanans do every November 16, around a ceiba tree!

Once the tour of the square is over, they will visit the La Mina art studio , an exhibition venue for five of the great figures of Cuban art: Zaida Del Rio, Ángel Ramírez, Carlos Guzmán, Ernesto Rancaño, Pedro Pablo Oliva and Roberto Fabelo. What is special about this place is the way in which the artists themselves have personalized their work areas. If they are in the studio, they usually receive guests and talk about their work.

We will take the opportunity to go up to the terrace of the Ambos Mundos hotel, to enjoy the best piña colada in the city with a spectacular view of the Bay of Havana.

Plaza Vieja Habana

From there we will go to the Saint Francis of Assisi Square , dominated by the baroque church and convent of San Francisco de Asís. If we go down the Oficios street we will find a special character for Havanans immortalized in a bronze statue, the gentleman from paris , whose life story is a myth. On the way we will go across the Carmen Montilla Gallery , just like him Mambí car , an elegant presidential carriage of which only 3 remain in the world.

With a marked eclecticism, to which is added an explosion of colours, rhythms and smells, the Plaza Vieja opens itself to the passerby, to later flow onto the Cathedral Square , surrounded by emblematic colonial palaces and dominated by the majestic Cathedral of Havana. Enjoy the unique contrast between baroque and neoclassical of the Cathedral where the remains of Christopher Columbus remained before being transferred to Seville, Spain. A stop is necessary in the emblematic Bodeguita del Medio , a bar where the famous American writer Ernst Hemingway enjoyed his mojitos. To see young artists in the middle of the creative process, discuss their concerns and artistic techniques, and buy good Cuban art, be sure to visit the Graphic Experimental Workshop , located in the Callejón del Chorro.

Lancha de Regla

Next, we will walk to the store Snack , a store-bazaar where Cuban design items, decorative and utilitarian objects, clothing and accessories, gifts, particular souvenirs, pieces of art and local crafts are exhibited and sold.

After an exquisite meal, nothing better than a ride in a horse-drawn buggy from Plaza de Catedral. It will take you to the Regla ferry . The carriages will transport you on a journey through the entire promenade from the Plaza de la Catedral to the Alameda de Paula. Once there, they will be able to walk the entire promenade, recently restored, its church of Paula, to finally cross the bay of Havana on the ferry to the seaside town of Regla.

Vista de la Habana Cuba

In Regla they will visit the famous Sanctuary of the Virgin of Regla . Right next to the church you will see the monument dedicated to the Abakuá Secret Society. From the voice of a babalawo, a figure of maximum authority within the Afro-Cuban religion called Santeria, they will receive a brief explanation of Afro-Cuban practices.

To finish the tour, we will cross the tunnel by car to visit one of the icons of the city, the Christ of Havana , in the Morro-Cabaña Military Historical Park, where we will learn about the history behind this monumental sculpture, from which we will enjoy an incredible sunset with the best panoramic views of the city.

Colonial havana tour summary.

The guided tour of colonial Havana is also known as the 4 squares tour. Four emblematic places that perfectly summarize the founding history of the capital of Cuba.

Plaza de Armas (“Main Square”)

“Main Square”, the foundational site of the city in 1519 it was the first and most important plaza of the old city. This green space in front of the sea host some of the most important buildings with high cultural importance. In our tour through colonial Havana you will discover all the emblematic places of this great historical center.

  • The “Castillo de la Real Fuerza” “Fortress of the Royal Army” first fort builds in Havana finished in 1558, crowned by “La Giraldilla” a small statue that is the official symbol of the city and Habana Club rum brand. “La Giraldilla” takes its name from a sculpture located in Seville, “El Giraldillo”
  • “Palacio de los capitanes generales” “Palace of the General Captain” the residence of 65 Spanish rulers it is the first example of Cuban baroque.
  • “La Antigua casona de los condes de Santovenia” build in the beginns of the XVIII century it is today the Hotel Santa Isabel, one of the most exquisite five stars of old Havana.

Plaza Vieja (“Old Square”)

The “Old Square” is a colonial plaza created in 1559, it would be the first civilian plaza of the city, detached from any church or military.

It was built surrounded by residences, such as: the palace of Count  Cañongo, Palace of the Count of Jaruco, and the Cueto Palace today a Hotel and the main example of “art noveu” in Cuba. A must-see on our tour of colonial Havana, today we can see it adorned with the sculptures of Antonio Grediaga.

The neighbors entrepreneur spirit has allowed for the creation of an enviroment filled with food drinks and music where small businesses grant an opportunity to seat at the margins of the square an enjoy the life of old havana.

Plaza de San Francisco (“San Francisco Square”)

Saint Francis square was build in 1628 and it was always favored by its proximity to the port witch led to its establishment as the city’s main market. It was for a while the international commerce hub of the area.

In the tour through Old Havana we will contemplate the bell tower of the witch was the highest point in the country for more than a century. The church host today a classical music hall, and a permanent exposition in the “museum of sacred art”.

Plaza de La Catedral (“Cathedral Square”)

The cathedral square is the last one of the main plazas of the old city. The cathedral that names it is an odd shaped though magnificent church with despaired towers on both sides and its considered the main exponent of Cuban baroque.

The square is surrounded by the homes of what used to be the political an economical dominant class of colonial Cuba counts, duques nobility in general making of this area the most expensive real state of the city.

If you visit colonial Havana with us we will discover the “Callejon del Agua” “water alley”. It is now a place with some of the best gastronomy offers in the city. A relatively small space with no modern buildings in sight. For this reason, it really is a transporting experience to stand in the middle of it an imagine how life used to look like in colonial era.

OLD HAVANA WALKING TOUR – WITH MAP

An Old Havana walking tour – with a map – is the best way to see Havana, the capital of Cuba. The far eastern section of the city known as Habana Vieja or Old Havana is especially charming with its colonial architecture and bustling plazas.

Central Park in Havana. The start of an Old Havana walking tour

Havana beguiles. It draws you in slowly with every soulful, mellow musical note, with every piece of baroque architecture, with every leafy, sunny square.

Here is a self-guided Old Havana walking tour map that will ensure you hit many of the main points of interest. There is so much more to see and do in this city but if your time is limited, this Old Havana self-guided walking tour is for you.

Table of Contents

OLD HAVANA MAP

El Capitolio: Start of the Old Havana walking tour

Start at El Capitolio, the capitol building, on Paseo del Prado which looks similar to the one in Washington DC. As impressive as the outside appears with its landscaped gardens and massive steps, the inside is equally impressive.

El Capitolio houses the third largest indoor statue in the world, the female representation of the Republic of Cuba. Also noteworthy are the art nouveau halls and chambers with their gilded lamps and polished marble floors.

The building has been restored to once again house the government of Cuba.

colonial havana tour

Guided tours are available through the week. Be sure to check the schedule first as the schedule changes.

Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso

From El Capitolio, turn left and head towards the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso. This ornately decorated, blindingly white, beautiful theater has been described with adjectives such as magical, magnificent and stunning…both inside and out.

This is Havana’s performing arts center and home to Cuba’s internationally renowned National Ballet Company. It is named after Alicia Alonso, Cuba’s prima ballerina and founder of the National Ballet Company.

The artists that have performed here over the years read like a who’s who list of artistic luminaries: Enrico Caruso, Jinny Lind, Sarah Bernhard, Alicia Alonso, Anna Pavlova to mention a few. Several theaters have stood in this location from the 1830s to the present.

The current structure was built in the early 1900s and was renovated several times. It reopened in 2016 and now offers excellent tours.

Havana's National Theater, the start of a Havana walking tour

Parque Central

This leafy plaza with its statue of Cuban patriot, Jose Marti has been completely restored. Have a rest on the stone benches and watch the classic American cars parade by. Or better still, hire one to tour Havana for an hour or two at about $50US an hour.

colonial havana tour

Cross Parque Central heading east and you find yourself at Plaza Albear. On your left is El Floridita , the world-famous bar where Ernest Hemingway sipped his daiquiris daily. In fact, many believe the classic Cuban cocktail was invented in El Floridita . Instead, it was invented in the small mining town on the far eastern side of the country in Santiago de Cuba province .

Plaza Albear is also the entrance to Obispo Street, a bustling, pedestrianized street full of shops, parks, restaurants and currency exchange houses, called CADECAS. Take Obispo Street all the way to where it empties out into Plaza de Armas, one of the most beautiful squares in Havana.

Plaza de Armas

Plaza de Armas is the site of the founding of Havana in 1519. The Plaza was originally called Plaza de Iglesias, or Church Square in honor of a church that stood here until 1741.

Today it is one of the most interesting sites in Havana. In the center is Cepedes Park named after Cuban patriot, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes who liberated his slaves and initiated the first Cuban war of independence against Spain.

The square is surrounded by a colonial military fortress on the left, the Museum of Natural History on the right and the Museum of the City of Havana at the entrance.

Interior patio of the Museum of the City of Havana. A must see on a Havana walking tour

If you’re short on time and can only choose one museum to visit, definitely head for the museum of the City of Havana with its excellent collection of colonial artefacts. It also features a detailed history of the founding and development of Havana.

The building is a faithfully restored representation of what an upper class colonial home would have looked like in colonial times.

Plaza de San Francisco

Leave the plaza heading south on Oficios Street for four blocks and you will walk right into Plaza de San Francisco. Just as you enter the plaza, there is a currency exchange house or CADECA on the left.

This wide, cobblestone square is one of four plazas originally built in the early 1700s. The others are Plaza Vieja, or Old Plaza and Plaza de La Catedral or Cathedral Square. At its center looms the austere Church of San Francisco, originally connected to a convent.

Next to it sits a beautiful fountain made of pure white Carrera marble. The entire plaza creates such a pleasing impression that it is frequently used as a backdrop for weddings and sweet 15 photo shoots.

Havana's Orthodox church

The plaza is surrounded by many high-end boutique hotels and restaurants. There is also a high concentration of art galleries in this area. To the east of the church in a shady little garden sits the elaborately decorated Greek Orthodox church of Havana.

Off the plaza on Amargura Street is the exposed section of the original colonial aqueduct, said to be the oldest in the Americas. Across the street from the aqueduct is the convent of Saint Brigida which today serves as a mid-range hotel run by nuns. See what it’s like to lodge in a modern-day convent in Havana .

Plaza Vieja

Continue south on Oficios Street for one block,  make a left on Teniente Rey Street and you will be in Plaza Vieja.

Plaza Vieja is where both locals and tourists go to sit in cafes and have snacks, sip drinks or coffee and listen to live music. On every side of the plaza are little cafes and restaurants with resident musicians.

The recently restored plaza is wide, cobblestoned and features interesting and unusual works of art throughout.

This is also where you can visit the local brewery serving particularly good beer. Plaza Vieja is the perfect spot for a quick drink, snack or a leisurely meal. It is also ideal for people watching before continuing on your Old Havana walking tour.

colonial havana tour

Mercaderes Street

From here head north, the opposite direction from where you came, on Mercaderes Street, one of the liveliest and most interesting streets in Havana.

Check out the open air restaurants on either side of the street, the little shops, parks and quirky museums. One particularly good paladar , or private enterprise restaurant, on this street is Paladar Mercaderes, a second floor location with authentic Cuban food at reasonable prices.

Try to get a balcony street so you can watch the action on the streets below as you savor your mojito and prepare for the next stop on your walking tour of Old Havana.

Plaza de la Catedral

Mercaderes Street opens up to Plaza de La Catedral, the last of the four classic colonial plazas. The first thing you notice is the majestic baroque style cathedral completed in 1777. Surrounding the cathedral are well-preserved 18th century homes with graceful arches, many of which have been transformed into restaurants. Looking at this colonial masterpiece of a plaza it’s hard to believe it was originally a swamp.

Havana's cathedral is a must on a Havana walking tour

Right off Cathedral Square down a little side street called Callejon del Chorro is the private enterprise paladar, Dona Eutemia. This is a pleasant restaurant with authentic Cuban fare with indoor and outdoor seating. It’s a great place for lunch or dinner but be sure to reserve before hand or you might not get a table.

La Bodeguita del Medio

To the west of the cathedral on Empedrado Street is La Bodeguita del Medio bar, another one of Ernest Hemingway’s hangouts. Patrons write their names on the wall here and savor the mojito cocktails that Hemingway made famous. It’s all a bit touristy and the mojitos are about twice the price they’ll cost elsewhere but it’s still fun.

Gran Manzana de Kempinski

As you head back to the original point of departure, Central Park, you can stay on Empedrado Street but any street will provide you a interesting view of day-to-day Havana.

O’Reilley Street is the busiest street filled with restaurants, snack bars and shops. Continue west until you reach a large complex housing the new Hotel, Gran Manzana de Kempinski which takes up the entire block.

This is a new hotel reputed to be the most expensive on the island or at least the most luxurious. Be sure to visit the lobby to admire the design and head up to the top floor to visit the infinity pool. From this vantage point you will appreciate stunning views of Havana and the surrounding area.

Havana’s classic hotels at the end of the Old Havana self guided walking tour

At this point you have completed your Old Havana self-guided walking tour. You should be back at Parque Central in the center of Havana’s classic collection of hotels. Be sure to admire the architecture of these hotels such as Hotel Inglaterra, Plaza, Iberostar Parque Central and others. You will notice an eclectic mixture of architectural styles, art deco, faux baroque and modern.

Explore, engage, experience

There are dozens of ways to explore this exciting and unique city. Havana grows on you the more you experience it, the more you discover  Havana’s hidden charms . This is just one Old Havana self guided walking tour.

The city can be explored with all types of Cuban transportation ; bici-taxis, coco-taxis or classic American cars. But the best way is still on foot. And for some of the best Cuban food in town, check out these unique Havana paladar restaurants.

If you have more time, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the rest of this enchanting island with the perfect Cuba itinerary.

Colonial Havana, a pirate’s dream – a journey to discovering its complex fortress system

colonial havana tour

Cuba was one of the Caribbean’s most coveted island for pirates and corsairs who repeatedly raided the island on several occasions throughout history. The aim was not always to steal some bounty but also take hold of cities like Havana, which was once occupied by the English for an entire year! On a Cuba holiday to Havana, you can admire the complex fortifications built to fend off invaders and here we tell you which ones to include on your itinerary!

Havana was once the Caribbean’s most brightly shining jewel, coveted by corsairs and pirates alike. The entire island itself was the Spanish empire’s most precious colony due to its strategic geographical location as a gateway to the Americas , an ideal trading port and mid-way stop-off point. With so many eyeing its rich potential the Spanish Crown had to fortify it in several ways and the magnificent remnants of these outstanding fortification systems can be explored on a holiday to Cuba.

Havana , specifically, as the country’s capital and trading centre, had to safeguard its riches more than any other part of Cuba and as such fortified itself as much as it could. The result is several fortresses, turrets and keeps, some interconnected with each other and, all of outstanding colonial beauty.

But Havana’s complex fortification system is not just beautiful, it is also a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and its fortress system is one of the most complex and best-preserved in the New World.

Havana Fortification System – Vedado and Old Havana

To discover them we suggest getting on a bicycle as one of the best ways to go from one point to the next, stopping at some midway point for refreshments and a bite or two. Let our cycling journey through fortified Havana begin!

Torreon de la Chorrera

We could start at the heart of Old Havana if all you wanted to see were fortresses and castles but since we’ll also be including keeps and turrets in this journey we actually suggest starting in the Playa municipality, right at the mouth of the Almendares River . This is the point where the Malecon ends (or begins, depending on how you look at it) and right here you will get to admire the first of the colonial fortress in our journey. Its full name is “Santa Dorotea de la Luna de la Chorrera” , but few know its lengthy moniker as most simply call it “Torreon de la Chorrera” .

Torreo de la Chorrera view from the Malecon

Built in 1646, its location was strategic to stop corsairs and pirates reaching a source of drinking water during their attacks to the city. Around 50 soldiers stood watch here, equipped with all manner of weapons, including 12 cannons , five of which protruded from its triangular windows and another seven crowning the top of the turret.

British Invasion of Havana

This turret was almost completely destroyed during the British Siege of Havana in 1762 as part of the Seven Years’ War , so the one you see today is a rectangular reconstruction, the original was round in the Moorish style present in most Spanish castles and fortresses, by Juan Bautista Antonelli; the eldest son of Battista Antonelli, the architect who built El Morro and San Salvador La Punta castles; after Havana was handed back to the Spanish government in 1763. Torreon de La Chorrera proved its worth during the British invasion of Havana, when Cuban colonel Luis de Aguiar tried to fend off the attack of two English ships led by George Keppel, 3rd Earl of Albemarle . He was able to hold them off until Cuban soldiers ran out of ammunition, after which they fled a virtually destroyed turret.

Nowadays, despite the wear and saltpetre abrasion, the fortress is preserved as a relic with a very different function. As you will soon notice, it now houses a restaurant offering outdoor seating with spectacular sea views. The structure you can see and explore today has a stone staircase separated from the towers and joined by a drawbridge. Its top tower, once a lookout point from which guards stood watch is now a viewpoint offering splendid views of the sea and Havana . You can linger here with a drink and a bite, but best return at dinner time to enjoy the amazing sunset views.

Torreon de La Caleta / San Lazaro

After leaving our first medieval attraction in Havana, get ready for a scenic cycling journey along the Malecon for a while, where you will be pedalling away for around 5 km until reaching our next stop, yet another medieval-style turret.

Torreon de San Lazaro and its sign, in the background Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital

Far more simple and significantly smaller than our previous one, Torreon de San Lazaro , its official name, or “Torreon de la Caleta” , as it’s also called, has a cylindrical shape like a small tower because it indeed served as a watchtower.

Built in 1665, its purpose was to serve as a mid-way lookout point strategically located between Old Havana’s fortresses and La Chorrera to allow for better visibility. Its location solved a major visibility problem as viewing the fortresses from this point was impossible, which made this part of the city more vulnerable.

Its size and structure might not be all that remarkable, but its function was of vital importance. Its walls are 1.30 metres deep with tiny loophole windows that allowed soldiers to open fire without exposing themselves and it features parapets on the top. There is no reason to linger here as its compact structure means that a quick view and inspection will suffice before getting back on our bikes.

Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta

Our next stop is right at the point where Paseo del Prado ends, and the Malecon meets Avenida del Puerto .

La Punta Fortress, also statue dedicated to Sebastian Francisco de Miranda

This is the first castle we will visit in our journey and an impressive one at that. The San Salvador de La Punta castle, commonly referred to simply as “La Punta” to shorten its long name, dates all the way back to 1587 and is one of Havana’s three main fortifications, along with Castillo de la Fuerza and El Morro . The long and costly process of building it was heavily debated and as a result its construction was stopped several times.

Like the other two main fortresses in Havana, its purpose was to protect Havana Bay from all-too-frequent attacks by corsairs and defend the city. Impressive because of its sheer size and how well it remains preserved against all odds

Its Renaissance style is of great beauty and the thickness of its walls, up to three metres deep, made it impenetrable and virtually unbreakable. Along with El Morro fortress it enjoyed a privileged location as both fortresses opened crossfire against any vessel that dared enter Havana Bay.

Today you can explore its interiors, now a museum exhibiting documents and objects related to its history. From archaeological remains found inside its walls to blueprints and floor plans and valuable pieces found in shipwrecks discovered along the bay.

The surroundings of the castle are ideal for long leisurely walks to take in the surroundings and take a break, enjoying the magnificent vistas over El Morro, the castle’s faithful battle companion. An all-white modern looking monument with a gap in the shape of a seven might catch your attention, if you get closer you can read the plaque awarding Havana the title of “Wonder City of the World” in 2016 as voted by thousands of travellers during the search for the world’s of New7Wonder Cities .

On your way to our next colonial Havana castle you might spot a small building resembling a fortress but don’t be fooled, this one is a much more modern structure imitating older ones in order to blend in with this old part of the city but built much later. It is actually a police station known as Cuba y Chacon and has nothing to do with the city’s medieval defence system.

Time to get back on your bike and pedal along for another kilometre or so to admire the first of all fortresses to be designed and built in Havana.

Sustainable Cuban Experiences

For the last 20 years, we have been providing exceptional and meaningful holidays, enriching the lives of active travellers and our community, and exposing them to a unique way of living by sharing real Cuban experiences in a sustainable way. From cycling across rural roads, trekking through lush mountains, mojito-sipping in Havana’s hip bars or simply relaxing on warm, white sandy beaches – at Cubania we know how to create a holiday that just hits the spot.

Castillo de la Real Fuerza

Considered the oldest fortress still standing in the Americas, the Castillo de la Real Fuerza is as beautiful as it is legendary. This is where the first Spanish governors kept their gold and silver before shipping them off to Spain. Located very close to Plaza de Armas , the castle was also the first residence of the island’s first captains general.

Canons guard the entrance to La Real Fuerza Castle in Old Havana

Built between 1558 and 1777 the castle features a Renaissance first floor and sits surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge. Despite its unbreakable look it had to be fortified with the construction of all the other fortresses that followed later because its location inside the bay made it much more vulnerable and meant that this one fortress alone couldn’t really protect the city, though looking at it you wouldn’t say that…

Inside, its halls exhibit valuable pieces rescued from the countless shipwrecks and wreckages found along the island’s shores. One of said halls is dedicated to exhibiting ship models, among them Santisima Trinidad , one of the main naval ships of the Spanish armada at Trafalgar , meticulously replicated in scale model full of detail. You will also find replicas of the trio of ships that took Christopher Columbus and his crew to the New World.

Its top affords excellent views over Havana Bay with sights to take in including the floating figure of El Morro Castle , the San Carlos de la Cabana Fortress , Havana’s Christ , not dissimilar to Rio de Janeiro’s but smaller, and the long seawall promenade known as Avenida del Puerto .

La Giraldilla – symbol of the city

La Giraldilla - symbol of the city

Crowning the castle is a bronze symbol of Havana, the very same used to represent the city in numerous posters and memorabilia items, in fact it is part of the logo of the Havana Club rum. We are talking about La Giraldilla , a weathervane in the shape of a woman representing the triumph of faith. Inspired by the figurine crowning “La Giralda” in the Cathedral of Seville , Spain, this Cuban version is an act of love and remembrance of  Isabel de Bobadilla , the faithful wife who stood watch over the castle’s tower for the return of her husband, Hernando de Soto , the seventh Cuban governor, who would die in his attempt to conquer Florida.

You can admire the original statue at ground level on the castle’s entrance, the one at the top of the tower is a smaller replica.

Atares Wall and Fortress

Continuing our journey as we pedal further down along Avenida del Puerto, we’ll pass by eye-catching attractions such as the pretty San Francisco de Asis Square with its lion-guarded fountain and usual flock of pigeons, probably the only place in Havana where you’ll see them, the Iglesia de Paula church and Almacenes San Jose , where you can peruse all manner of souvenirs under one huge roof, a former dock warehouse.

Fragment of the wall around Havana, in the backgorund Havana Train Terminal

As we approach our next medieval castle, we will stop to take a look at a fragment of the great big wall that once surrounded Havana to protect it. You will find it on Calle Egido and according to legend it cost 3 million pesos to build its four-kilometre perimeter. With 10 gates that linked life from inside the wall to the world outside, said gates opened daily at 4:30 in the morning and closed at 8:00 p.m. every evening when a cannon shot from La Cabana fortress announced their closing. These walls remained intact for nearly a century, even when now all that are left of them are fragments still standing in the city’s oldest part. The cannon shooting tradition, however, continues to this very day and although it no longer announces the city’s curfew and is now done at 9 p.m., it marks a special point in the day of all habaneros.

Castillo de Atares

To reach our next (optional) stop you will continue pedalling down Avenida del Puerto for some 4 more kilometres to find a small but nonetheless remarkable fortress.

Draw bridge of Atares Castle in Old Havana

This hexagonal hilltop castle with an enviable, panoramic location atop “La Loma del Soto” dates back to 1767 and was built as part of the city’s second colonial defence system. In its heyday, Castillo de Santo Domingo de Atares , its full name, had capacity for up to 90 men and over 26 pieces of heavy artillery. Complete with a moat and housing valuable sketches from Leonardo Da Vinci , it is worth stepping inside.

To mark Havana’s 500th century last year, the castle was restored and opened to the public for the first time in a very long time, so don’t miss your chance to visit it and admire it inside out.

Crossing the Bay for more

At this point you can take a break and cool down with a cocktail at any of the nearby bars and cafe, or you can get ready to cross Havana Bay in search of more medieval treasures. To do this you’ll need to head back the same way you came until reaching El Curita park on Calle Dragones and Belascoain, where you’ll need to hail a cab to take you through the tunnel to the other side of the bay. If you come here on a bike, you will have to head to the Regla ferry station to board the boat that will take you and your bike to the other side of the bay.

Castillo Tres Reyes del Morro

Right after crossing the tunnel your eyes will meet Cuba’s most famous fortress, perhaps its most impressive, as well as highly photogenic, and one of the oldest too. It has featured in countless travel brochures and photographs along with its iconic lighthouse and has come to be considered a symbol of Havana .

Lighthouse of Morro Castle and great views of Havana

Built between 1589 and 1630, the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro has the shape of an irregular polygon majestically poised on top of a cliff and seemingly rising from the sea. It once housed over 200 men and several cannon batteries named “The Twelve Apostles” , which played an important role during the British invasion of 1762.

The lighthouse that you see today replaced the original in 1845 and stands 45 metres tall above sea level. Since 1986, along with San Carlos de la Cabana, this fortress is considered part of the Parque Historico Militar Morro-Cabana .

During your visit make sure to stop by Balcon de la Reina (queen’s balcony) to enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Havana, especially at sunset when many head here to drink in the spectacular vistas. You can truly see all of Havana from here!

Along with the La Real Fuerza and La Punta castles, El Morro is included in Havana’s coat of arms. It’s indeed an unmistakable emblem of the city.

San Carlos de la Cabana

“He who owns this hill, will own Havana.”

Above is the memorable phrase uttered by our next castle’s designer. The magnificent fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana is the youngest in our itinerary, built to avoid another invasion like the British in 1762. As such it was built after the city was handed back to Spain a year later, in exchange for Florida, to expand Havana’s defence system.

Entrance to La Cabana Fortress

Considered the biggest, most ambitious military construction ever built by the Spanish in its colonies in America , it never suffered the strains of battle. It was never attacked. Perhaps it accomplished its mission by simply deterring potential invaders. Its sheer size would have made the ruling monarch at the time, King Carlos III , unhappy, as he used to complain about the elevated costs of building fortresses, declaring that a fortress that expensive should be visible from Madrid. Not quite the case, but not too far off the mark!

Here you can visit one of the chambers where Ernesto Guevara’s set up his general command headquarters during the first few years after the triumph of the Revolution and check out the confession booth used by Spanish officials and soldiers

But this place is famous for one thing above all others – the daily cannon shooting ceremony that takes place here at 9 p.m. every evening , perhaps Havana’s longest kept tradition, kept alive in full pomp and flair with the cannon shooters themselves dressed up in colonial military attire and doing ceremonial line-ups and marches.

Your journey could easily end here and you could head back across the bay to enjoy a well-deserved lunch in an Old Havana paladar or eat right here at scenic paladars like Mirador “El Clasico” serving fresh lobster among other specialties. But if you can hold off until our next proposed stop your dining experience will be even better. If you are still thirsty for adventure and can endure one more cycling stretch, read on.

Torreon de Cojimar

Now our next stop requires quite a bit more cycling than our previous one – 22 km to be precise, but if you’re really into the experience, like to leave no stone unturned and like discovering far-fetched corners, it’ll all be worth it .

Torreon de Cojimar and Hemingway Park

Next, we will be heading to the small town of Cojimar , made famous by its most international resident – American author and Nobler prize winner, Ernest Hemingway . The fortress you will find here was built in 1649 and a few steps from it you will find a monument paying homage to “Papa” Hemingway, as he is known here. No doubt Cojimar is a mecca for those who love Hemingway’s literature, they can follow his trail here, right on the sleepy seaside town that inspired one of his most famous novels: “The Old Man and the Sea” .

But back to the fortress, which is what you came to see after all. This one has a square shape, is 80 feet long and 40 feet wide, has a drawbridge and, according to old records, it used to house 11 cannons and had room for up to 50 men. During the British invasion, this turret was neutralized and taken over by the English who kept hold of it until they left Havana a year later. It needed several repairs and eventually, with the passage of time a town started to take shape around it.

While you’re here and in case you didn’t stop for some grub earlier in our cycling journey , there are a couple of paladars where you’ll not only get to tuck into the most mouth-watering dishes but you’ll also enjoy the most breath-taking sea views!

You have two choices. Head to Donde Albert , a small cosy restaurant virtually right next to the turret, you will hardly need to walk, to enjoy a family-owned atmosphere with warm service, reasonable prices and exceptional food with freshly caught specialties. Alternatively, La Terraza de Cojimar is also within easy walking distance but located directly overlooking to the sea, so close you will taste the saltiness in the breeze. Then fall into a seaside trance and relax to the sounds of the waves as you reflect on your day’s sightseeing journey.

Fascinating Havana colonial castles and fortresses

As you have seen if you read this far, Cuba was, for a very long time, Spain’s most prized and coveted possession and nowhere is this clearer than in Havana , which had to be fortified not only several times but with more a more complex defense systems than any other colony in the Americas. Havana’s fortresses are also grander and more spectacular than any other in the Caribbean or indeed the American continent. Our journey through Havana’s colonial wonders includes the majority of the city’s defense system, but it’s not exhaustive, there are more surprises to discover here and there, like Castillo del Principe in Vedado for instance. After embarking on this journey, you will understand how Cuba was the very last colony Spain surrendered, and not willingly!

Cuba Itinerary 7 Days colonial

Cuba Itinerary 7 days – The Best Colonial Cuba Route

Visiting Cuba is an amazing and unique experience, but it can be bewildering. From where to go and what to see, never mind how to get between places.  Our Cuba Itineraries are unique, in that they primarily use the Viazul Bus service as the method of transport.  These Cuban itineraries are designed specifically to get you to places using the bus as the main mode of transport, so we provide the bus times, and the best places to stay to make sure that you’re maximizing your time in Cuba and not dragging your luggage for miles between bus stations and casa particulars or spending money on unnecessary taxis and transfers.  This Cuba itinerary in 7 days focuses on Cuba’s colonial history and takes you to all of Cuba’s colonial highlights.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED AND AFFILIATE LINKS. MORE INFORMATION IN  OUR DISCLAIMER

This Cuba itinerary in 7 days takes you to all the major colonial Cuba sites and attractions, using the Viazul Bus as your method of transport.  We’ve noted the main sites and made recommendations on where to stay to maximize your time on this trip to Cuba and also make suggestions on how to extend this itinerary.

This Itinerary has been updated for the Viazul Bus Timetable changes made in March 2024.

Colonial Cuba 7 Day Itinerary

We know that there are other colonial sites and places to visit in Cuba, but this 7-day Cuba itinerary focuses on the major attractions that you can get to using the Viazul Bus as your primary mode of transport and tries to ensure that you don’t spend most of your vacation sitting on a bus but seeing and experiencing the great colonial attractions that Cuba has to offer.

7 Day Colonial Cuba Itinerary Key Information

You’ll need a copy of the Viazul Bus timetables and prices to plan and execute this itinerary and if you don’t have that yet, click here and I’ll send it to you.  Along with the Viazul Bus timetable, you’ll get a weekly email from us with on-the-ground updates from people like you who are currently in Cuba with up-to-the-minute advice on currency, buses, attractions, and a whole lot more!  You can make all bus bookings online with Viazul directly.  If there’s a route that Viazul doesn’t provide, then it’s noted as we go through the itinerary and there’s a recommendation of alternative transport options.

Arriving in Havana

Our colonial Cuba 7-day itinerary assumes that you’ll be arriving at Jose Marti (Havana) international airport.  You can read everything that you need to know about arriving in Havana airport here .  It includes what you’ll need to enter the country, including a Cuban Tourist card ( buy it here if you haven’t already got one ) and medical insurance, which is a requirement to enter the country.

We recommend using Visitor’s Coverage for insurance – and you can also buy insurance for Cuba from Civitatis. Or if you want to read about all the details of required Cuba travel insurance our guide is here.

Havana airport is about 30 minutes drive from the city of Havana and there are twelve Viazul buses a day from the airport to the Viazul Bus station in Havana.  You’ll need to check the times to see if they leave at the right time for your flight arrival. Our guide on getting from Havana Airport to Havana is here.

The Viazul Bus station is about 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) from Old Havana, which is where we recommend you stay to maximize your time on this colonial Cuba itinerary in Havana Cuba, so you might want to consider pre-booking a transfer from the airport to your casa particular or hotel in Havana.  (note that both private AND shared transfers are available) We’ve also provided an alternative (and fabulous) casa particular that’s located close to the Viazul Bus station in Havana, so you can drop your bags there and then head off for Havana’s colonial attractions!

Organizing your Internet access in Cuba

Our guide to accessing the internet while you’re in Cuba is  here , but you should also consider pre-booking a Cuban Tourist eSIM to make your internet access easier while you’re here.  You can read all about Cuban Tourist eSIMs in our guide  here , or TLDR:   Order one here and be online as soon as you land

Cash, Currency, and Cards in Cuba

You should also read our guide to Cuban Currency  here .  And also understand that while the Cuban government has blocked Cuban banks from accepting US dollars, Cubanos still want them.

Booking your Transport for this 7 Day Colonial Cuba Itinerary

The majority of the transport between the 3 different locations on this Cuban Colonial Itinerary is on the Viazul Bus.   If your plane lands at a time that can meet one of the Viazul Buses from Havana Airport to Havana City, otherwise we’d recommend pre-booking a transfer.   You will also need to book your Viazul Buses as soon as you confirm the dates of your vacation to ensure you follow the itinerary.

  • Prebook Airport Transfers here – now includes shared and private transfers
  • Book your Viazul Bus Tickets here

Don’t forget to read our guide to the Viazul Bus Service so you know what to expect!

Personal Security in Cuba

Cuba is one of the safest places to travel.  But petty theft does happen.  Especially if you openly display valuables and don’t look after them.  Take all the usual precautions that you would anywhere else.  Lock your valuables in your accommodation in  a portable travel safe , don’t leave valuables lying around, and don’t openly display wads of cash and you’ll be fine.

Where to stay in Havana for a 7 day Colonial Cuba Itinerary

Most of the places that you’ll want to see in Havana on this colonial Cuba itinerary are located in Old Havana (Habana Vieja) so we recommend staying in Old Havana.   Our recommendations of where to stay in Havana Vieja are:

The Casa Buenos Aires is in a superb location in the center of Old Havana, just one block from the Museum of the Revolution, making it easy to walk all the sights of Old Havana.  There are three private, ensuite rooms here, all with a private bathroom and a private balcony.  Breakfast and laundry are available here.  There is internet access here, a glorious garden, and a terrace with a bar where you can enjoy a fabulous Cuban cocktail.  See photos of the Casa Buenos Aires here.

The gorgeous Casa Giraldilla is a restored colonial house dating from the 1920s and has high ceilings and a glorious balcony for people-watching.   Carmen and Carlos speak English, Spanish, and a little French.   All rooms are ensuite and have either a window or a balcony onto the street.  There are two doubles and a twin room here.  Breakfast and internet access are available here.  There is a glorious terrace on the roof available to all guests.  Book a room here.

The Casa de La Plaza de Cristo is in a building that dates from 1903, an 8-meter-long balcony gives all guests a magnificent view of the Plaza de Cristo.  It is a fabulous location to stay in Old Havana.  Rooms here are bright and airy, simply decorated, and have air conditioning.  Rooms are ensuite and breakfast is available for an additional cost.  You can see the location of this great old Havana casa particular here.

If you prefer to stay close to the Viazul Bus station and stretch your legs (it’s about a 35-40 minutes walk to Old Havana), then our next recommendation is very close to the Viazul Bus Station.

Casa Caribbean Blue 1927  is located in a glorious Neo-classical property just a short walk to the Havana Viazul Bus Station in the heart of Vedado.  It’s just 10-minute walk to the Malecon and the Hotel Nacional.  There’s a garden and a lovely terrace here, plus a washing machine.  All rooms at Casa Caribbean Blue are fresh with plenty of natural light and presented in a traditional Cuban style.   The host here, Noel, speaks Spanish, French, and English.     Read more reviews here.

Colonial Cuba Itinerary Day 1:  Havana

The casa particulars that I recommend staying at in Havana are all in glorious colonial buildings, so you’ll be truly enjoying the architecture here for your entire time.  I also selected them because they provide amazing breakfasts.  And you should fill up first thing with a great breakfast.  For a start buying breakfast helps your casa particular owner and the local community massively, secondly, you’ll save a huge amount of time by breakfasting “at home”.  You’re also going to take a rather late lunch today, so do fill up!

If you want to take a short wander before breakfast, then I suggest heading to the Malecon, which is glorious first thing in the morning.  After breakfast, you should head to the start point of your Colonial Cuba Tour.  And the great news is that the first stop on your 7 day Cuba itinerary with a colonial focus is free.

Take a free Colonial Havana Walking Tour

This walking tour doesn’t start until mid-morning, so you have plenty of time for that leisurely wander along the Malecon (aren’t the crumbling buildings there just glorious?) and then a huge breakfast to keep you going until later.  The free colonial Havana walking tours are run by locals and there’s no fee for them, but you do have to book a place so that they know how many people to expect, you simply tip your guide appropriately for their time.  During this colonial Havana walking tour, you’re going to start at the oldest hotel in Cuba, the Hotel Inglaterra, and a stunning example of Havana’s late 19th-century neoclassical architecture.  You’ll also get to explore the Gran Teatro de La Habana theatre and then Havana’s most important building El Capitolo, the seat of the national assembly.   Your next stop is an old home to one of the largest brothels in Havana (!) – the Ursuline Palace.  Your tour of Colonial Havana continued with the old Pharmacy on the gorgeous Calle Obispo, then you’ll visit Havana’s Cathedral and the stunning houses from the colonial era that ring the Plaza de la Catedral.

Pharmacy Museum Havana Itinerary 2 days

There are heaps of other plazas the former stock exchange and the monument to the founding of Havana.  Plus, you’ll get to view La Cabaña and Morro Castle, the hilltop fortress built in the 16th century to guard the entrance to Havana Bay from pirates, Don’t worry though, you’ll see more of that later! Meanwhile. Did you book your place on the walking tour yet?

So far you’ve explored the city on foot, and just the colonial part – now it’s time to take to the road for a while at least because you simply can’t come to Havana and not see the city and the Malecon in a vintage car.

Take a Classic Car Tour of Havana

This is one of the best ways to see Havana Cuba.  You can pick up a classic car tour – pick your color and style from outside the Hotel Inglaterra.  Or near the entrance to the Museum of the Revolution.   You’ll need to negotiate, but the usual rate is about US$70 an hour.  They have a standard route that they take, (there’s more on what to expect on a classic car tour  here ).  You’ll need to pay cash, alternatively, you can  prebook and prepay a vintage car tour in Havana here.

Classic Car Tour Havana Cuba

Now we left lunch until now so that you could fit in a short food tour of Havana.  If you don’t want to do this (after reading about it), then I suggest after the Colonial Walking Tour you head to Café del Oriente, which is very close to where you’ll finish the walking tour (112 Oficios, La Habana, Cuba), there’s a lovely colonial atmosphere here and great outdoor seating too.

Take a short Street Food Tour of Havana

Now I admit it, there’s not a huge amount of this that is colonial, but it is a GREAT way to continue your explorations of the history and architecture of Havana.

You don’t want to fill up TOO much though, because I have a Colonial surprise for dinner.

On this street food tour of Habana , you’ll get to try a whole host of typical local foods – and learn about their history – and you’ll be surprised by a lot of them!  There are stops to taste typical local fried foods, like chiviricos and churros, and the traditional Cuban pork sandwich, all washed down with a refreshing cup of strawberry syrup flavored crushed ice… mouth-watering!  This is a great way to understand and explore the inventiveness of the Cuban people when it comes to food.  There’s the typical Cuban sugarcane drink known as guarapo, squeezed straight from the cane – and a visit to a traditional Cuban ice cream parlor –  Coppelia!   Reserve a place on the Havana Street Food Tour here!

See the Havana Colonial Cannon Firing Ceremony & Have Dinner

You saw the cannons at a distance earlier on your Colonial Havana walking tour.  And these cannons, located at Havana’s El Morro fortress have fired, since colonial times, warning the residents of the city that the city wall gates were closing.    The ritual dates back to 1774 when pirate attacks were a regularity and the  cannon firing  used to happen from a ship in the harbor.  The ceremony then moved to the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress, known locally as La Cabaña.  Guards dressed in historic colonial uniforms continue to perform the ceremony, although the pirates are long gone.  This is a great way to see a bit of history and then head to a local restaurant for dinner.   Check out more details of the Havana Colonial Cannon firing ceremony here.

Havana Cannon firing ceremony

If the cannon firing ceremony isn’t for you, then I’ve written about the best things to do in Havana at night here.

Now we’ve reached the end of your first day on this 7 day Colonial Cuba Itinerary (it’s going to be around midnight by now), so its time to head back to your Casa Particular for a good night’s sleep, you’ve got a packed day and a lot of travel to do tomorrow!  Sleep Tight now!

Colonial Cuba Itinerary Day 2:  Havana to Cienfuegos

You’ve only got half a day in Havana today, so you need to make the most of it.  And you’ll need to be at the Viazul Bus station by 13:45 AT THE LATEST to check-in for your bus to your second location on this 7 day colonial Cuba itinerary.  Don’t be late!

Start the day by having a great breakfast at your casa particular, or if you want a change, then head to Café Bohemia on Plaza Vieja in Old Havana.

Explore Havana’s Colonial Museums

And now we’re off to learn more about Colonial Cuba through some of Havana’s museums.  You can read more about the top Havana museums in our guide here, but the ones that have a colonial focus are as follow:

Museo de la Ciudad (Museum of the City of Havana)

The museum of the city of Havana is found in the Plaza de Armas.  You can’t miss it as it occupied the entire west side of the square.  El Museo de la Ciudad was once the Spanish government headquarters in Cuba.  It was also home to the Viceroys that ruled Cuba.  Originally the site of a church, this building was constructed in 1770 and is a superb example of Cuban Baroque architecture.

museum of the city Havana colonial cuba itinerary

After 1898 and Cuban independence it became the US military administration.  Today this museum houses the history of Havana.  And it’s a great way to see the development of the city.   Key things to see here include:

  • La Parroquial, the first church in Cuba
  • La Giraldilla, the first sculpture made in the city
  • La Heráldica, objects and documents detailing the importance of heraldry to the Cuban aristocracy
  • La Pinacoteca shows the important works of Cuban artists from different periods in time
  • The Spanish Uniforms Room and the Heroic Cuba Room

The living quarter’s display of the Spanish governors is stunning.   The building has a glorious central patio, which has a white marble statue of Christopher Columbus, which has been here since 1862.  You’ll find lots of antique furniture, 19 th – century carriages, and a rather interesting exhibition of photographs about important moments in Havana’s history

  • Museum of the City of Havana Opening Time:  From Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00.  Sunday from 9:00 to 13:00.
  • Address of Museum of the City of Havana:  Calle Tacón (between Obispo and O’Reilly), Plaza de Armas, La Habana Vieja, Cuba.
  • Entrance Fee for Museum of the City of Havana:   US$3

Museo de Arte Colonial

The entire focus of Havana’s Museum of Colonial Art is on what life was like for the wealthy Cubanos during the colonial period.   The museum is housed in the oldest building in Havana, a stunning and enormous two-story house that also has a large courtyard.  Room upon room is stuffed full with antiques, furniture, china, and clothing all dating from the colonial period.

  • Museo de Arte Colonial Opening Time:  Tuesday to Sunday 0930 – 1700
  • Address of Museo de Arte Colonial:  San Ignacio nº61 (Plaza de la Catedral), La Habana – Cuba.
  • Entrance Fee for Museo de Arte Colonial:   US$2
  • Website for Museo de Arte Colonial

Castillo de la Real Fuerza

You saw the Fort twice yesterday – once from a distance on the Colonial Havana walking tour, and then again at the cannon firing ceremony .  Now it’s time to get up close.   The Castillo de la Real Fuerza is located at the mouth of Havana Bay, just a short distance from where legend has it that Havana was founded.   This fort was built to defend the city and was completed in 1577.  It is the oldest preserved fortress in the Americas.  Over the centuries the enormous series of buildings has had many uses, it’s been a barracks, a location for the city archives, a governor’s residence, a museum, and offices for the government.  Today and since 2010 its been Havana’s maritime museum.

morro fort Havana

The fort and the museum are part of the UNESCO world heritage site that also encompasses Old Havana.  In the museum, you’ll find ship models, maritime instruments, and items retrieved from shipwrecks.  For colonial interest, you’ll also find displayed items relating to daily life in the fortress between the 16 th and 18 th centuries.

  • Castillo de la Real Fuerza Opening Time:  Tuesday to Sunday 0930 – 1700
  • Address of Castillo de la Real Fuerza:  Calle O’ Reilly (Plaza de Armas) / Avenida del Puerto, La Habana – Cuba.
  • Entrance Fee for Castillo de la Real Fuerza:   US$2

Grab Some Lunch

Don’t forget to grab some lunch before you head towards the Viazul Bus Station.    The ropa vieja at El Gusto is fabulous and it is just a short walk from the bus station.  All their dishes here are filling and cheap.

Viazul Bus from Havana to Cienfuegos

On the afternoon of your second day on the colonial Cuba 7 day itinerary, take the 13:50 Viazul Bus from Havana to Cienfuegos.   The bus arrives into Cienfuegos at 20:30, so you’ll want to prearrange your accommodation in Cienfuegos (see our recommendations below).  The bus costs 20 EUROS and you can book your tickets online with Viazul.

Make sure you read our guide to the Viazul Bus carefully, as you’ll need to check-in personally at the Viazul Bus station at least an hour before your scheduled departure.

The Viazul Bus station is in central Cienfuegos as are the locations you’ll want to visit, so be sure to opt for one of the very central casa particulars.

Where to stay in Cienfuegos on your 7 day Colonial Cuban Itinerary

You’ll want to stay centrally on this Cuban itinerary, to save time traveling to and from your accommodation. Here are our recommendations for where to stay in Cienfuegos.

Hostal Madera Colonial 1906 , hosted by Leticia y Oscar is just 200 meters from the Viazul bus terminal and 700 meters from the Historic Center of Cienfuegos.  It is an elegant house, of Californian colonial style, built in the first decade of the 20th century.  There are spacious rooms here, and common spaces that include a living room, parlor, dining room, terrace, and patio and is surrounded by gardens with abundant tropical vegetation. The owner of the house, Oscar, speaks English and Spanish.   There are two triple en-suite rooms here with air conditioning and a patio.  There’s also a laundry service available. Breakfast is available.  See photos of the Hostal Madera Colonial in Cienfuegos here and reserve your room .

Cienfuegos Center Hostal Raquel is located right in the center of Cienfuegos, it’s just 8 minutes from the Viazul Bus Station. Your hosts, Raquel and Osmany provide excellent dinners and rooms with private bathrooms and A/C throughout. There’s also a spacious terrace, and living room, and both breakfasts and dinners are provided. This is a great location next to Paseo del Prado. Reserve early this is a very popular place to stay in Cienfuegos.

Colonial Cuba Itinerary Day 3:  Cienfuegos

Cienfuegos has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005 because, for one reason, of its harmonic grid of beautiful classical structures.  This seaside city in Cuba was founded in 1819 by French émigrés.   There are two main sections to the city, the colonnaded central zone, with its majestic Paseo del Prado and lush green park, and Punta Gorda, a tiny knife of land that plunges into the sea and is home to a collection of crazily eccentric mansions built by the city’s wealthy and influential classes in the 1920s.   Often called Cuba’s “Pearl of the South” people come here because of its natural beauty, refined French airs, and feisty Caribbean cultural heritage. If there is a Paris in Cuba, this is unquestionably it.

You have just one day in Cienfuegos on this 7 day Cuba itinerary, so you need to make the most of it.  Your bus gets in at 19:45, so drop your bags at your casa particular and head for a cocktail at one of the central bars. You’ll find most of them on the Paseo El Prado.  I recommend El Palatino.  Want to know what to drink?  Check our guide to Cuban cocktails here.

The casa particulars that I recommend you stay at in Cienfuegos are both very close to the Viazul Bus station to reduce the distance you’ll need to carry your bags, but also provide great breakfasts.  Make sure you start the day with a great breakfast and then it’s time to head out and explore colonial Cienfuegos.  The highlights of what to see are below.  But if you want to spend longer here, then our guide to Cienfuegos details the best things to do here and in the surrounding area.

Start in Parque José Martí – Cienfuegos

The Parque José Marti is known as the heart of Cienfuegos, both for its historical significance and its symbolic value. In the park be sure to visit Cienfuegos’ very own Arc de Triomphe, the only one of its sort in Cuba, created in celebration of the country’s independence. There’s also a marble statue of José Marti himself just next to it. While the plaza was initially constructed when Cienfuegos was founded in 1819, it was renamed in honor of Marti, the father of Cuban freedom.

Explore Palacio Ferrer in Cienfuegos

This magnificent neoclassical edifice (1918) is located on the western side of Parque José Marti and was meticulously renovated in time for Cienfuegos’ 200th-anniversary celebrations in 2019.  The rooftop cupola has a wrought-iron staircase that leads to a viewing platform with incredible city and lake views. Don José Ferrer, who commissioned the construction of this “palace” in the early 1900s, may have wished for visitors to have a glimpse of what it must have been like to be a member of the Cuban aristocracy in the first half of the 20th century.

  • Palacio Ferrer Opening Time:  0830 – Midnight
  • Address of Palacio Ferrer:  Street 25 nº5401, Cienfuegos

Palacio del Valle, Cienfuegos

The Palacio del Valle, built by Italian architect Alfredo Colli for wealthy trader D. Acisclo del Valle and constructed between 1913 and 1917, is one of the most important buildings in the city. The palace is a kaleidoscope of styles, combining mudéjar decoration with Gothic entrance, Colonial ceilings, and a music chamber influenced by Louis XVI.  Today, the palace is home to a museum as well as a great rooftop bar and restaurant.  You have the option to pay US$2 to walk up the stairs and see the gorgeous view from the rooftop. The payment also includes a free drink from the restaurant downstairs. It is definitely worth visiting.

  • Palacio del Valle Opening Time:  0800 – 1700
  • Address of Palacio del Valle :  South of Calle 37 in Cienfuegos, Cuba
  • Entrance Fee for Palacio del Valle:   US$2 for rooftop views

things to do in cienfuegos palacio del valle

This is a great place to end your short tour of Cienfuegos, the restaurant at Palacio del Valle that specializes in seafood, so get yourself an early dinner, as you’ll be on your next Viazul Bus shortly.

Take the Viazul Bus from Cienfuegos to Trinidad

At the end of day 4, take the Viazul bus at 20:30 to Trinidad .  Note that you will need to check-in at least an hour before the bus departs, so have an early dinner.  The bus arrives in Trinidad at 22:05 and while the Viazul Bus station is in the center of downtown Trinidad you’ll want to prearrange your accommodation in Trinidad.

Where to stay in Trinidad for a 7 day Cuban Itinerary

Casa Colonial Torrado 1830 is a stunning casa particular in the center of Trinidad.  The house was built in 1830 and has been remodeled several times, but still retains the Cuban architecture of the 19th century.   Rooms here are opulent with air-conditioning, fabulous views from the terraces, and glorious courtyards.  Stay here, you won’t regret it.  Take a look at the amazing photos and reserve a room while you can!

Hostal Omara – close to the center of Trinidad, with lovely design and two fabulous terraces where you can watch the city go by. Rooms all have private bathrooms, hot and cold water 24 hours, air conditioning, WiFi, TV and Minibar Check prices, book and pay for this Trinidad Casa Particular online here.

Colonial Cuba Itinerary Day 4:  Trinidad

Founded by the Spanish around 1514, the entire city of Trinidad is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Trinidad combines picturesque cobbled streets with a crumbling colonial architecture built on the profits of the sugar cane trade and a truly Cuban vibe.    It became one of Cuba’s richest cities on the backs of the labors of slaves from Africa producing sugar cane, tobacco, and farming cattle.  Trinidad is small and very easy to explore on foot.

Start your day with a good hearty breakfast at your Casa Particular.  Trinidad is, I think, even more touristy than Havana , so I advise picking a casa particular that has a fabulous patio or garden, you’ll love the escape from the hot sultry streets of Trinidad. Then when you’re ready, get started with a guided tour of Trinidad. If you plan to stay longer in Trinidad, then our guide to Trinidad is here.

Take a Free Walking Tour of Trinidad, Cuba

This free walking tour of Trinidad is a fabulous introduction to the sites of Cuba’s best-preserved colonial city.  It is free, but you will need to prebook here .  And, like Havana, tip your guide at the end of the tour.  As well as giving you a historic introduction to Trinidad, this walking tour will take you past all the main sites in Trinidad.  You’ll explore the main historical center of Trinidad, the Bell Tower, and the views across Trinidad, the Palacio Cantero, and Plaza Mayor, Trinidad’s main square.  Your tour will take you to the San Francisco de Paula Church, a place of worship in Cuba’s central region during the colonial era.

Plaza-Trinidad-Cuba

Then there are the ruins of the Brunet Theatre and the buildings that surround the Plaza Mayor will be explained to you.  As will the landmark of the yellow tower of the San Francisco de Asís Church, built in the 18th and 19th centuries.  The tour finishes at the ruins of an ancient prison from colonial Trinidad in Plaza Santa Ana. Reserve your place on this tour for your preferred dates.

One of the great things about taking a walking your in Trinidad is that your guide will make recommendations of the best places for lunch!  If they don’t, then we recommend Restaurant San Jose , 328 C. Gutiérrez, Trinidad, Cuba for great service and good options.  After lunch its time to explore some more colonial-era Trinidad

Visit the Palacio Cantero in Trinidad – Museo Historico Municipal

This once beautiful but now crumbling palace was built in the early 1800s – there are large open rooms and Italian marble floors.  It’s now a museum that covers the history of Trinidad and the area surrounding the city.    You’ll get a flavor of the history of the area, the  UNESCO World Heritage Valle de Los Ingenios , and learn about some of the slave trading that happened here and Cuba’s independence wars.  The signage in the museum is quirky, to say the least.  It’s a great opportunity here though to take a look around the inside of the neoclassical palace.   The mansion was originally owned by the Borrell family and was then bought by a German sugar cane planter called Kanter (Cantero in Spanish), hence the name.

Museum-Trinidad-Cuba

Explore the Museum of Colonial Architecture, Trinidad’s Museo de Arquitectura

This 18 th -century mansion was originally owned by the Sanches Iznaga family and is now home to the Museum of Colonial Architecture in Trinidad. The style of the period has been retained to some extent and you’ll see architectural details such as doors, windows, grills, and a recreated bathroom.

  • Museo de Arquitectura Opening Time:  From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Saturday-Thursday)
  • Address of Museo de Arquitectura :  83 C. Ripalda, Trinidad 62600, Cuba
  • Entrance Fee for Museo de Arquitectura:   US$1
  • Website for Museo de Arquitectura Trinidad:   https://www.ecured.cu/index.php/Museo_de_Arquitectura_Colonial

After all that colonial exploration I think you deserve a treat and that means it’s time for cocktails.

Head for Cocktails in Trinidad

You’ll want to head to Bar La Canchanchara in Trinidad for a special cocktail that you won’t find in many places outside the city.

canchanchara

The Canchanchara is believed to have been invented by Cuban Mambises fighting against the Spanish for independence in 1869.  It contains ingredients that would have been readily available to the freedom fighters, it was originally drunk as a warming drink to ward off the cold of the morning.  Combining a rough sugar cane alcohol, honey to sweeten it, and widely available citrus fruits.  Of course today it’s served iced, with rum rather than rough alcohol.  The La Canchanchara bar is famous for serving Canchancharas in handle-less pots.

  • La Canchanchara Bar is located at 90 Calle Real del Jigüe, Trinidad 62600, Cuba.

Colonial Cuba Itinerary Day 5:  Trinidad

On day 5 of your 7 days Cuban colonial itinerary I recommend you leave the city.  Don’t worry you’re coming back tonight, but to follow the colonial theme, then head to the Valle de Los Ingenios from Trinidad Cuba.  This is one of the best day trips from Trinidad and it’s also another UNESCO World Heritage Site.  There is (sometimes, when it doesn’t break down) a tourist steam train that runs here from Trinidad, but as I say, sometimes.  The most reliable way to visit the Valle de Los Ingenios from Trinidad is to take a day trip , which is best to organize with your casa particular. (they’re not available to book online at this time)

The Valle de Los Ingenios means the valley of the sugar mills and it’s here you’ll find relics from the sugar cane plantations and sugar mills of the area. There were more than 30,000 slaves working in the plantation and mills here at its peak and this was the sugar capital of the world.  There were once 60 sugar mills here.   You’ll want to visit

Valle-de-los-Ingenious-Trinidad-Cuba

  • The Mirador de La Loma Del Puerto  – this lookout gives you great views of the entire valley.
  • The Manaza Iznaga Tower  – this 44-meter high (147 feet) tower has great views and was previously used to both watch slaves at work in the fields and also spot runaway slaves.  From here you can see the remnants of the main house and climb the tower.   There was once a huge bell hung there that tolled for the slaves in the fields signaling the beginning and end of their working days.

Colonial Cuba Itinerary Day: Trinidad to Havana

It’s your last day on the Cuban colonial itinerary and it’s time to head back to Havana (unless you headed back yesterday of course!).    Carefully note the departure and arrival times of the Viazul Bus and consider that you will also need time to get from the Viazul Bus station to the airport if you are flying home on day 7.  Depending on traffic it is likely to take around 30 minutes to go from the Viazul Bus station to Jose Marti International Airport in Havana.

The bus from Trinidad to Havana leaves at 09:50 and it arrives in Havana at 17:25 . The bus calls at the airport BEFORE it gets to Havana.

There is one bus earlier in the day that goes to both Havana and the airport. It leaves Trinidad at 06:00 and arrives at the airport at 12:50 and arrives in Havana city at 13:40.

Alternatively, you’ll want to arrange a transfer from the Viazul Bus station to the airport or take a taxi or colectivo, which will be plentiful at the Viazul Bus Station.  You will need cash though, as none of the taxis or colectivos accept cards.

Hi Sarah, Thank you for creating this amazing website. Its absolutely one of the most useful sites to look up things for Cuba. We are going there next month and checking what we want to see and where to go (and how to get there 😉 ). I was hoping you have the 10 days in Cuba right up to 14 days in Cuba itinerary somewhere, because i can’t find it on your website? Thanks again, Mignon Scholte

Avatar for Sarah

Hi Mignon – thank you! I have the 10 and 14 day itineraries in draft and will email them to you now. They don’t have the detail of what to do in each location, but the city guides can fill that in for you. They do include details on buses and where to overnight. Sarah

Avatar for Trevor Sharp

Hi Sarah, you have put together a really helpful website! When I try and register on the Viazul website the drop down list of countries stops after B, so I can’t register (UK passport etc). Any suggestions? Trevor Sharp

Avatar for Sarah Carter

Hi Trevor, this seems to be a recurring problem with Viazul, they fix it and then it comes back. It used to be that you could flick the site to Spanish and it fixed it, but what isn’t working either. When its happened in the past I’ve simply opted for Antigua (or something that’s in the list), put my passport details in and gone from there, so long as my passport number and name was right the bookings were good. I’d also send them a message – email/WhatsApp numbers are on the Viazul page (but don’t hold your breath for a response 🙁 )

Avatar for Barbora

Hi Sarah, thank you for all the information!! Can you pls tell me if it is possible to book & pay tickets at Viazul from Europe? And do we receive any confirmation/tickets? Thank you for your answer, Barbora

Hi Barbora – yes you can book and pay from Europe, just go to https://viazul.wetransp.com/ and make a user ID and then book your tickets. You can use any card as long as its not from a USA bank. If you have a problem creating a userID because the country drop down doesn’t include your country (there have been some problems recently), then just pick the last country on the list. Good luck!

A Tour of Havana's Iconic Architectural Landmarks

Havana Cathedral

Cuban architecture is a mosaic of styles from different periods and regions, from military fortresses and Catholic churches dating back to Spanish colonial times and sumptuous hotels and casinos built by the American mafia in the 1950s, to prefab frame-and-panel apartment blocks built for the working class during the Cold War. Alongside some of the most beautiful buildings in Havana, you will find an array of constructions that stand out for their history, aesthetics, or significance.

2. Morro Castle

Built between the 16th and 17th centuries to protect the city from the attacks of French corsairs and pirates, Morro Castle is strategically located at the entrance of Havana Bay. It is better known for its lighthouse, installed in 1895, which has become one of the foremost symbols of the city of Havana.

3. La Cabana Fortress

Museum, Building

Built as part of a project to improve Havana’s protection from foreign attacks after the city was returned to Spain by the British in 1763, this impressive building is the third-biggest colonial fortress in the Americas. A daily ceremony is held at the fortress, reenacting the traditional cannon shot that announced the closure of the city gates at 9 p.m.

5. La Fuerza Castle

The oldest stone fort in the Americas, La Fuerza Castle was built too far inside the Havana Bay, a mistake that undermined its capacity to provide protection against attacks. Crowning its tower, there’s a replica of La Giraldilla, a weathervane in the form of a woman that has become a symbol of Havana. It is a tribute to the widow of a former Havana governor, who kept waiting in vain for the return of her husband from an expedition to Florida, where he had perished.

Reviews of this Operator

Great value for your money.

This is my second time travelling with Globus, would have been my third if not for COVID. The way they plan everything is super organized, the tour managers are very caring and knowledgeable. We always enjoy all the site visits planned for each trip. They start by picking you up from the airport and from then on everything is taken care of up until the last day of your trip, even dropping you off at the airport not matter the time of day or night. The hotels at every city are always great and centrally located so you can walk around during your free time or plan your own visits to different sites.

Globus exceeded my expectations!

This is my first Globus tour. I was pleasantly surprised with the depth and quality. The hotels were top notch, and the cruise on the Nile exceeded my expectations. The cabins were roomy and comfortable, and the food was very good.

The experience was amazing!!

The trip was amazing. Our tour guide was so kind and very knowledgeable. I needed to attend a very important meeting via zoom. She was very understanding and accommodating to my needs and made it happen. I was very grateful! Our driver was by far the best driver I’ve ever encountered! I was beyond impressed with our guide, driver and trip!! I will definitely be back for another adventure!!

Did the Globus Highlands and...

Did the Globus Highlands and Islands Scottish Tour with Ian and Allister. What a trip!! With his sharp wit, immense knowledge and fun humour, Ian absolutely brought Scotland to vivid life with his many tales, informative quips and total, utter passion for history. Was spellbound. Am so VERY thankful I had the opportunity to be on Ian's last bus tour before retiring with Globus. In addition, to being so hard working and helpful, with Allister our driver, I cannot tell you how safe and secure I felt in his capable driving hands. He had some very awkward traffic and interesting roads to navigate with our large bus, (especially on the islands and up north) but he handled it all expertly and without a hitch. So much so, I was able to relax and enjoy the journey. All in all, with our tour, you could tell both these kind men cared very much for those of us who needed the extra help and advice. Made my bucket list trip to Scotland so memorable and wonderful. Thank you Ian and Allister! Globus is truly fortunate to have you both.

Program Details

Description:

ENJOY THE ISLAND ON TWO WHEELS!!

We have designed original routes to discover the most cultural and social attractions of the Cuban capital. Discover in a few hours Cuban customs, the picturesque contrast of the architecture of its neighborhoods, as well as on the outskirts of our beautiful beaches on the north coast of Havana, always pedaling at your own pace and taking pictures of your trip.

Learn about the oldest legends and the founding of Old Havana by walking through the squares, castles, passages and restored buildings that make up the Historic District, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. This is a beautiful tour in Old Havana, the oldest and most touristic part of the city. For the delight of the unusual mixture of architectural styles and the testimony of the different periods that marked its history: Spanish, British, French and American crowns.

Departure point:

  • Obrapía Street No. 360 bajo e / Habana y Compostela, Old Havana.
  • Montero Sanchez Street No. 34 e / 21 and 23, Vedado.

Places of interest:

  • Malecón Habanero, the route starts in a walk along the pier located on the north coast of Havana where you will enjoy the unique air and marine environment.
