Testimonials

“ “ Walking through the doors of the Rhino Room always reminds me of what I like about comedy. In the dirty little green room all are equal. Reputations are left at the door. New comics swap punch-lines with people you would normally only see on the TV. But if a comedian is killing on stage, then the backstage empties and every comic is found side stage, watching, laughing, riding the energy of the gig. The outside world doesn’t exist. It’s all about the show. ” Wil Anderson
“ “ I love the Rhino Room because it’s the best comedy room in Adelaide. As for the bar … I can always remember walking in but I can never remember walking out. Too much fun. ” Tom Gleeson Gold Logie Winner, Hard Chat and Hard Quiz
“ “ What I love about the Adelaide Comedy Gigs is that apart from the providing the opportunity to see top-line comedy acts at about half the price you would pay to see them during the Fringe. There’s somewhere I can go to forget my troubles for a few hours and have a good laugh. It’s the best form of therapy I know! And as a regular comedygoer, it’s fascinating to watch the comedians (and even individual jokes) develop over time. Plus there’s the satisfaction of knowing that when some of the current crew make it big (which they will), I’ll be able to say “I saw them before they were famous…” ” David Hyland
“ “ I love Adelaide Comedy because it is a symbol of fun, laughter, friendship and family. It has given me so many wonderful memories in the past few years, and I know it will always be a part of my laugh, whether I be behind the scenes or in the audience. So much love for AC and everyone who help to make it happen. ” Lauren ‘Lolly Dolly’ Thiel
“ “ The Rhino Room is not only a great venue to see comedy; it’s also THE place to go for a drink if you want to view the comedians in their natural habitat. ” Arj Barker
“ “ The perfect comedy oasis for great comics to play and create. ” Greg Fleet

Comedy Queens

Alannah Maher

An international cast of the world’s funniest drag queens is on its way to Sydney! The Comedy Queens  2019 tour will also hit Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane this August.

Greats of the American drag scene, Coco Peru and Jackie Beat, will take to the stage with Aussie legends Trevor Ashley and Karen From Finance, as well as some of the biggest personalities to come out of RuPaul’s Drag Race – Alaska Thunderfuck , Willam, Bob The Drag Queen, and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo.

Willam spoke to the City Hub  ahead of this mammoth tour to dish on the life of an international drag superstar. An author, an actor, a businesswoman, a Youtuber, a podcaster – there aren’t many hats this unapologetic queen doesn’t wear, and she carries her no-holds-barred attitude across every endeavour.

Willam made a memorable impression sharing the screen with Lady Gaga in the box-office hit A Star is Born , yet she says it was her part in the new HBO documentary Wig , covering the history of New York’s cult drag festival, that was a “full circle moment” in her career.

“I grew up watching the OG  (1995) Wigstock  documentary. To be asked to perform on that stage by (Lady) Bunny and to have Neil Patrick Harris introduce me was a pinch myself moment… It was truly humbling to be in a room with hundreds of people and hear them laugh at me in the new documentary.”

When it comes to the Comedy Queens tour, Willam promises to bring that energy. “I think it’s safe to say audiences can plan on laughing,” she said. (AM)

Review: Drummer Queens at the Comedy Theatre

Updated: May 2, 2021

Review by Benjamin Lamb

Continuing their Australian tour, Joe Accaria’s Drummer Queens truly makes a mark with their unique stage show at Melbourne’s iconic Comedy Theatre,

Equal parts musical, drum clinic, and comedy show, Drummer Queens brings the oft marginalised drum set and female drummer to the front and centre for an enjoyable 85 minutes.

Coming from a well versed and learned musical background, Accaria has brought together some of Australia’s best female percussions from far and wide, many of which have appeared in Accaria’s previous productions of Tap Dogs, and others coming from Australia’s rich theatre and live music scene.

The show doesn’t waste any time getting started, the troupe get straight to it showing us why they’ve earned the title of the Drummer Queens. Creating somewhat of a percussive symmetry, one by one, each queen appears as if from nowhere and adds an important layer to the aural experience.

Drums litter the Comedy Theatre stage, the vast space being looked over by two full drum sets on risers, while the stage was reserved for single drum work and some enjoyable choreographed moments.

Throughout the show, we get all different varieties of drumming, each piece is given a title, with things like ‘Marimba’, ‘Asian Metal’ and ‘Cajons,’ we get a bunch of styles from all around the world. Each song is performed with extreme amounts of energy, that slowly seeped into the audience, with close to everyone feeling involved as the show progressed.

The crowd are also graced with most of the instruments in the percussive family, from egg shakers to the xylophone. This vast range being a welcome addition, and helping break up the ordinary drum moments.

Don’t be fooled by the name of the show, it definitely isn’t a show full of drumming, there is some semblance of a storyline in Drummer Queens, with each of the girls playing a character that heavily plays into the dynamic and cohesiveness of the show.

Each of the talented Queens have their moment in the spotlight, bringing something fresh to the stage, whether that be a xylophone solo, tap dancing break or even a cowbell piece, it was enjoyable to see there was no hierarchy, each drummer was not trying to top the last.

The small comedic elements improved as the show progressed, with the performers being more comfortable on the stage, as well as the audience developing an understanding of what to expect in the show as it went on.

These comedy skits scattered throughout the stage show assisted in the flow, but illustrated further that the 85 minutes are all about timing, whether that be a drum battle, a gag, or a dance break. But these ladies were definitely on point for the opening night, none of them missed a beat.

The last act of the show resulted in a bunch of awesome costume changes and an amazing light show, they assuredly finished with a bang, each Queen having an applause break as big as the last.

As the show came to a close, the close to sold out Wednesday night crowd were all up on their feet, giving two standing ovations to the super talented Drummer Queens.

How a Raunchy Lounge Singer Spends His Sundays

Dani Lubnitzki, who is better known as Dani Luv, puts his own spin on Sinatra during the week, but on Sundays he shops for his grandchildren and has a jam session with friends.

Dani Luv eats with friends at a restaurant while one of them records him on a cellphone.

By Rachel Sherman

For more than two decades, Dani Lubnitzki was the resident lounge singer and pianist at Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse on the Lower East Side, where bottles of vodka were served lodged in blocks of ice and the entertainment was as schmaltzy as the chopped liver.

“It’s like a disco with comedy,” said Mr. Lubnitzki, 67, who performs under the stage name Dani Luv.

The restaurant was a home for the musician, who delivered smutty insults to diners’ faces and performed renditions of “Hey Jude” (his version is called “Hey Jew”), “Dayenu” and the Hora six nights a week until the coronavirus pandemic brought indoor dining to halt.

“It was March 14, a Saturday night, we had 300 people on the book,” he said. “And we were left with 40. Somehow it was a fun night.”

The restaurant shuttered entirely in early 2021, forcing Mr. Lubnitzki to take his one-man show — garish and heavy on the shiksa jokes — on the road. He’s been hustling as a freelancer ever since. He held a residency at Edith’s in Williamsburg in 2022, but has mostly relied on one-off gigs: bar mitzvahs, birthdays and house parties.

Now, Sammy’s Roumanian is planning its return , this time at 112 Stanton Street, a few blocks from its previous location on Chrystie Street. The new restaurant will open on May 3, the owner, David Zimmerman, said. Mr. Lubnitzki will be back, too.

He grew up in Israel and moved to New York in 1982 at 25 years old. He later married and moved back to Israel in 1993, but just before he left he landed an unusual, high-profile job as the entertainment for a private party — for Billy Crystal. It was his first appearance at Sammy’s Roumanian. Mr. Lubnitzki and his wife divorced after a few years and in 1998 he returned to New York. A month later he was at the restaurant again, the start of his 22-year-run.

“It was really beshert,” he said, using the Yiddish term for destiny. “It was crazy.”

Mr. Lubnitzki lives in a one-bedroom apartment in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens.

STILL DARK If I didn’t work on Saturday, I will wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning and go to Starbucks, or I’ll go to the local diner, Blue Bay Diner, that has the best coffee in the world. And I will have like four or five cups of coffee to get ready for Manhattan’s energy.

I like this little adventure, to wake up when it’s still dark. I usually get a bagel and cream cheese or an omelet, which I feel more comfortable eating here because there’s no bacon on the same grill. I’m not very, very kosher, but when it comes to meat I am.

ALTERNATIVE GREETINGS Then I’ll go to Manhattan to meet friends or Linda, my ex-girlfriend. I’m not a subway guy. I have an S.U.V., a little car I lease, and I take the car. That’s the reason I can’t live in the city. It’s crazy with a car. I find parking on Sundays. Usually I’ll go to the Lower East Side. I get a lot of: “Dani Luv, Dani Luv, what’s going on? When’s Sammy’s coming back?” And people giving me the finger, all in the spirit of fun. I live for these moments. I love it.

SMELLS LIKE MANHATTAN I’ll meet my friends or my ex-girlfriend for lunch, or a late brunch. For lunch, some of our regular spots are The Smith ; Pylos , a Greek restaurant; sometimes Little Poland ; Veselka ; Second Avenue Deli , I love. I was a pescatarian for 13 years, but a year and a half ago I started eating meat again. It’s amazing how the compulsion came back for hot pastrami and stuff like that. I like very Eastern European food — stuffed cabbage — or very Middle Eastern, like spicy fish, shawarma, hummus and falafel. Also just dairy. I love dairy.

It’s like a long Sunday kind of thing: We’re sitting for sometimes two or three hours and talking with musicians or just interesting people. I’m an ex-smoker, so afterward coffee, no cigarettes, but some of my friends smoke. I’m a cigarette-holic. Even though I haven’t smoked for 14, 15 years, I still love the smell. It smells like Manhattan. It registers fun.

JAM SESSION Food kills me; I need an activity right away. I can fall asleep in the restaurant. Usually we then go to someone’s apartment. We may work on comedy or have a jam session. My friends play the saxophone, the flute, the guitar. Some of them are Israelis, some of them American; they’re all great musicians. When we’re really jamming it could go until very late. I have a lot of friends in the city, but in the middle of the week everyone is busy, so if I have a Sunday it’s like a party. I love days — they’re optimistic — but I’m a night person. Basically, everything is upside down.

THE CITY’S SPOILS Some Sundays I’ll go shopping for my six grandkids, especially for kids’ clothes. I go with Linda because I don’t know what to buy. I mean, I know what to buy for me — it’s always a black shirt and black pants. Those days it’s shopping and that’s it. Other days we’ll go to a museum, or get half-price theater tickets and see a Broadway musical or a straight play, which can be very interesting or boring. The city offers so much culture, but it’s because of Linda and other friends who know what’s going on that I get to take advantage.

A DOSE OF OPTIMISM When I get home, the first thing is Netflix. I like very optimistic movies. I no longer have a stomach for violence and all that. I watch sweet movies with good endings and love stories that I wouldn’t necessarily have watched 20 years ago. Some of them are very good; some of them are plastic. I watch a lot of Christmas movies — I’ll fall asleep with a movie on. I will do half a movie, sleep for a couple of hours, wake up and continue. I’m like a Jewish vampire — I live in the night.

I’m 67, but I feel like I’m 30 or 40. It’s crazy. Hopefully I’ll have another 10 years at the new Sammy’s, and my Sundays will be there.

How These New Yorkers Spend Their Sundays

A Drag Performer and Educator: For Kelindah Schuster, who performs as Theydy Bedbug and helps people develop their own drag characters, Sundays are “a sacred day of rest.”

A Nigerian Cuisine Chef: Ayo Balogun, owner of the Dept of Culture restaurant in Brooklyn, devotes Sundays to pancakes with his 13-year-old son  and art with his partner.

An ESPN Host: Mike Greenberg tries to avoid sports talk until it’s time to watch football. That leaves time for brunch, books and Taylor Swift .

Married Indie Pop Musicians: When they’re not on the road, Ian Devaney and Aidan Noell, two-thirds of the band Nation of Language, like to relax in the park and have coffee in their neighborhood .

An Urban Forager: Aly Stoffo knows where to find wild mushrooms, berries and other edible plants on Staten Island. But the location of her favorite paw paw patch is a secret .

The Central Park Birder: Christian Cooper, the host of the TV show “Extraordinary Birder,” enjoys a meditative moment , complete with lute music, among the native plants in his rooftop garden.
