Bina whom I had known but never travelled with before decided to do the Kenya/Uganda Safari with her. It was such an amazing experience. Everything was looked after and I didn’t have to worry about anything. From the time I landed in Kenya I was in good hands. Bina is experienced, knows the language, the areas and was flexible if we wanted to do something or go shopping in markets. If you are a single traveller I would highly recommend as you won’t be gouged on the price. And an amazing deal for couples.

Excellent African Vacation

We travelled to 4 African countries with Bina, and everything went off without a hitch. Stop after stop, we were ushered in to our lodgings and safaris and through airports without issue. She even chose our side-trip connections, taking care of safety and expediency. Having been born and lived there, Bina’s knowledge of how things work in Africa, including speaking many languages, made our safaris and intra-country travel simple. She took care of all the details, and all we had to do was show up packed and ready to go. Food choices were abundant, lodging was unique and sometimes even spectacular, and connections easy with Bina. Bina is an easy-going and truly conscientious guide. She looked after our every wish and need. She has been taking people on African tours for over 20 years, and has perfected her skillset. We were so happy with our African tour, we are booking a trip to India with Bina. Trisha from B.C.

In April of 2016

In April of 2016, my longtime friend and I had the opportunity to embark upon an adventure to Dubai/Africa. A twenty-six day adventure to experience things that many simply dream about. Bina Jamal coordinated this event and her and her husband accompanied us on the trip. Bina arranged the entire vacation and did so perfectly. Everything was looked after, our flights, accommodation, meals, transportation and safaris. This, without question, was one of the greatest experiences that I have ever had on a vacation. Everything was precise. Bina was extremely experienced and managed every day of our trip with grace and professionalism. Her knowledge, background and preparation advice was meticulous, relevant and valuable. We had a fabulous time and saw things that we never thought we'd ever see. The Big 5 on the Kenyan safaris and the trek into the Ugandan jungle to observe the silverback gorillas are two. Bina made sure that we received the best price for every part of our trip and I know that without her assistance we would never had been able to accomplish such a perfect, unique experience at this price. I highly recommend Bina Jamal to anyone who is planning a similar trip to our's. You will not be disappointed!

I went to Kenya and Tanzania with Bina…

I went to Kenya and Tanzania with Bina in August 2019. The trip was very well organized, as we had wanted to travel in this particular season to see the Great Migration in Kenya. Upon arrival in Kenya, Bina had organized some sightseeing like Giraffe Centre and David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Both these excursions were worth the visit and it was well worth our money to see these animals being treated so well in the environments they are in. The hotel in Nairobi “Hemmingways” was just breathtaking. We then flew to all our lodges in Kenya. Bina had arranged for us to go to Amboseli National Park where we saw hundreds of elephants in the swamps. The next camp was in Samburu and what a different experience that was. Next, we flew to the Masai Mara and our camp at Rekero was mind blowing. I had never heard of Migration Camps until Bina suggested we go to one. The 3 nights at Rekero were just mind blowing and amazing to see all the wildebeest and other animals during the migration. I had only seen it on documentaries, but experiencing this was just unbelievable. The representatives who picked us and dropped us at the airport were so polite, kind and knowledgeable and it made our trip very comfortable as we were very nervous at first. Thank you Bina for making this trip so unforgettable. The markets Bina took us to and bargained for us were just amazing and they had so much stuff there. Bina made sure we did not pay the full price and bargained until she got what she wanted to pay!! I recommend everyone who wants to travel to East Africa to book with Bina as she is very knowledgeable in booking these trips.

Bucket List Trip Realized

When my husband first suggested going to Africa on a safari, I knew that it would be a “bucket list trip” we would try to arrange. His work colleague, Bina Jamal, a native of Kenya, told him about the trips she has been arranging for a number of years. It would be so great to leave the arrangements to someone who knew all of the “ins and outs “of the process. She had been to all of the parks and hotels that we would visit and would select the ones that would give us the best experience. She negotiated the best possible rates and secured competent and engaging drivers for our safari experiences. All of the details from transport to and from the airport to hotel bookings were seamlessly arranged. We had one payment to submit and everything else was handled for us. The hotels were first class, the food excellent. We felt that we were treated like royalty. Even though the hotel staff commented that it was not high season, the animals all showed up for us. If this were “Trip Advisor”, I would give this trip a “10” out of “10”. We had the great fortune to meet Bina’s charming parents who each joined us for a portion of our trip. Bina’s fluency in Swahili was an amazing advantage. Issues that might have been difficult were handled swiftly. It was evident that she was given respect and not subjected to slippery dealings, as she was recognized as a native. We were most fortunate to book our trip with a native speaker who knew the best spots to see the amazing animals of Kenya and Tanzania. I would highly recommend that if you could join Bina on one of her amazing safari adventures, that you do so. Mel & Irene Chapman

We had the most amazing time in Africa…

We had the most amazing time in Africa with Bina and Crown Safaris Tour Company. Our trip was just over 2 weeks and we were so well taken care of. From the planning of the trip, to the booking, and the actual trip itself. Bina was always available and present to assist us through the entire journey. She made fantastic recommendations as to what to see and where to go for the time that we were there. She ensured that the accommodations we stayed at were clean, safe, and of highest standards. She accompanied us on most aspects of the trip and ensured that we were enjoying ourselves, making the most of our experience, but most importantly she made sure that we were safe at all times. Sure you can spend the time and do the research yourself, but hearing it from someone who has been there and done it is invaluable. You may also try to book the accommodations yourself online, but how can you guarantee the facilities reputation without having spoke to someone who has stayed there before? Finally, going on the trip without a guide and host is also fine but having a personal tour guide who can share stories with you, give you the history, as well as explain the culture, the food, and translate for you is incredible and worth the small added cost. Some of the amazing aspects of booking with Bina were: 1. She picked us up and dropped us off at the airport when we landed and left 2. She picked us up and dropped us off at the hotels when we landed and left 3. She bartered and translated for us when we were in the marketplaces. She made sure that she took us to the best places to get the best deals on souvenirs and African art 4. She took us to many places off the beaten path to show us the true essence of Africa. 5. Did I mention that by accompanying us, she ensured that we were safe at all times? I cannot say enough about Bina and how unforgettable of an experience she made for us. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone who is thinking about going on a trip to Africa to consider booking with Crowne Safaris! You won't regret it!"

Man gets life in prison over plot to rape and murder famous British TV personality in case cracked by undercover U.S. cop

Updated on: July 12, 2024 / 10:22 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A man was sentenced to life in prison Friday for plotting to kidnap, rape and murder Holly Willoughby, one of Britain's most high-profile television personalities, in a case that an undercover Minnesota police officer helped crack .

At the sentencing hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, around 40 miles east of London, Judge Edward Murray told Gavin Plumb , 37, that he would have to serve a minimum term of 16 years before he can be eligible for parole.

Plumb was found guilty by a jury last week following an eight-day trial.

"Over a number of years, you pursued an unhealthy sexual obsession with Holly Willoughby that led you ultimately to plan over that period to kidnap, to rape and to murder her," the judge said. "You intended to harm her husband and her children as part of your plan."

Plumb's kidnap plans, as fleshed out in vivid detail in an online chat group, involved attempting to "ambush" Willoughby at her family home. He had even discussed taking time off work in order to organize the attack.

The judge said Plumb's plans were so "horrifying, shocking and graphic in detail" that they were not shared in open court, though the jury did hear them.

BGC Group Charity Day In London

They were, he added, "particularly sadistic, brutal and degrading" and he had no doubt the plans were "considerably more than a fantasy."

Plumb, who had prior convictions for attempted kidnap, had argued in his defense that his detailed plan was just online chat and fantasy.

Though Willoughby's impact statement was not relayed, the judge said it was clear that Plumb's plot had a "catastrophic and "life-changing" impact on the TV personality, privately and professionally.

Willoughby, 43, has for years been one of the most high-profile television personalities in the U.K. Soon after Plumb's arrest, she stood down after 14 years in her role presenting "This Morning," a magazine program on ITV that mixes celebrity interviews and entertainment news with discussions about current affairs. She did return to co-host the channel's "Dancing on Ice" earlier this year.

"I've never seen such a skilled detective"

Plumb was snared after an undercover Minnesota police officer infiltrated an online group called "Abduct Lovers" and became so concerned about Plumb's posts that evidence was passed to the FBI.

Plumb told the officer, who was using the pseudonym David Nelson, that he was "definitely serious" about his plot to kidnap Willoughby, leaving the officer with the impression that there was an "imminent threat" to her.

U.S. law enforcement in turn contacted their counterparts in U.K., and when Essex police officers raided Plumb's flat in north London they found bottles of chloroform and an "abduction kit" complete with cable ties.

Jeff Mundale, Owatonna's police chief, told CBS Minnesota that his detective needed just two days of messaging and building trust to get the information he needed to decide to alert the FBI and British police.

"In my 29 years of serving law enforcement, I've never seen such a skilled detective in engaging in this sort of work," said Jeff Mundale, Owatonna's police chief. "It's certainly impressive."

When Plumb was arrested and officers told him that the allegations concerned Willoughby, the defendant told them: "I'm not gonna lie, she is a fantasy of mine."

Willoughby waived her right to anonymity in connection with the charge against Plumb of assisting or encouraging rape. In the U.K., alleged victims of sex offenses or targets of sex offense conspiracies have a right to automatic anonymity for life from the moment an allegation is made by them or anyone else.

Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood, of Essex Police, the senior investigating officer, said the case "brought misogyny and violence against women and girls to the fore" and paid tribute to Willoughby and others

"It has demonstrated that we all have much to do to stamp it out of society," he said outside of the court following the sentencing. "It cannot be right that men like Gavin Plumb are able to join online forums where they freely vent their hatred towards women and girls and plot to cause them harm. We need everyone to stand up and call out misogyny and to report those causing violence towards women and girls."

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

crown safari group

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

crown safari group

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

crown safari group

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

crown safari group

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

crown safari group

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

crown safari group

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

crown safari group

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
