This 15-day safari, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar beach trip include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, going on safari in the greatest national parks in Northern Tanzania, and relaxing on the Zanzibar beach. Trek along the Machame route while staying in a tent in close proximity to the outdoors and wildlife of the African savannah. After the hike on Mount Kilimanjaro, go on a luxurious wildlife safari that is undoubtedly worth the money and packed with unending adventures. While on this journey, you will experience the best attractions that Tanzania has to offer. Finish it off by unwinding on the stunning white sand beaches of Zanzibar Island and discover why they call them the spice islands of Zanzibar, the birthplace of the legendary Freddie Mercury as you take a stroll on Stone Town.

6 Days Machame Route + 5 Days Safari + 3 Days Zanzibar Beach

For 6 days you will trek Kilimanjaro using the Machame Route , otherwise known as the “whiskey route” then after descending you will transfer to Arusha for an overnight stay before heading to Lake Manyara National Park where your 5 days safari in Tanzania will begin. For your safari game drives, you will tour Lake Manyara National park , Serengeti, and Ngorongoro, a great chance for you to spot the big cats and the big 5 animals if you are lucky. After your safari, you will fly to Zanzibar for a more relaxing adventure at the beach.

When is the best time for this 15-day Machame Route trek, Tanzania safari & Zanzibar?

The warmest and driest months of the year, from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October, are the ideal periods to climb Kilimanjaro, go on safari and relax on the beach of Zanzibar.

Below is the day-by-day glance at the 15 days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route trek and safari itinerary in Tanzania.

Activities & Transportation

Arrival - Kilimanjaro Airport

When you arrive, we’ll pick you up at the airport and take you to the pre-booked lodge/Hotel in Moshi, where you’ll spend the night. We will assemble that evening at 5:30 pm to go through the pre-climb instructions and inspect our gear. Your overnight stay will include a half-board at the pre-booked Hotel for both dinner and breakfast.

Machame Gate to Machame Hut

We will start our journey through the lovely and lush forest after completing the mandatory registration procedures at the Machame gate. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch along the way. We will camp at Machame Hut Camp after the approximately five- to six-hour hike (9,800 ft).

• Elevation: (1490m) to (2980m)
• Hiking time: 7 hours
• Distance: Approximately 18 kilometers
• Habitat: Montane forest

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, we’ll leave the rainforest’s glades and climb up the mountain. We’ll hike over a narrow, rocky ridge covered with heather till it comes to an end when we cross the valley. The path now takes a river valley to the west. The day will come to a conclusion with time for relaxation, dinner, and your stay the night at the Shira Campsite. The journey today will be 5 kilometers long and take 4–6 hours. We’ll climb from 9,400 feet to 12,500 feet.

• Hiking time : 6 hours
• Distance: Approximately 9 km
• Habitat: Moorland

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

The trek today will be 10 kilometers and will take approximately 6–8 hours. From 12,500 feet to 13,000 feet, we will climb. We proceed eastward from the Shira Plateau along a hill, past the intersection that leads to Kibo’s summit. As we go on, our course shifts to the southeast, in the direction of the “Shark’s Tooth” lava tower. We’ll reach the second intersection, which leads us to the Arrow Glacier at a height of 16,000 feet, shortly after the tower. Moving on, we descend to the Barranco Hut Camp , which is 13,000 feet above sea level. Here, we’ll take a nap, have dinner, and spend the night.

• Distance: Approximately 15 km
• Habitat: Semi-desert

Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp

After breakfast, we depart Barranco and make our way to the Karanga Valley Campsite through a narrow slope, crossing the Barranco Wall. After that, we’ll depart Karanga and arrive at the intersection of the Mweka Trail. Onward to Barafu Hut we go. You have now finished the South Circuit, which provides a variety of perspectives of the top. We’ll set up camp here, have a nap, eat dinner, and get ready for the summit day. From here, one can view Mawenzi and Kibo, the two summits . This 9km trek, which rises from 13,000 to 15,000 feet, will take 8 to 10 hours.

• Hiking time: 7h
• Distance: Approximately 13 km
• Habitat: Alpine desert

Barafu Camp to Summit down Mweka Camp

We’ll continue climbing to the peak between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers quite early in the morning (between midnight and two in the morning). You’ll travel northwest and climb across steep scree in the direction of Stella Point on the crater rim. The hardest part of the walk both physically and emotionally is this section. You will take a brief break at Stella Point (18,600 feet) , where you will be rewarded with the most spectacular dawn you are ever likely to witness (if the weather permits). On your hour-long journey to the peak from Stella Point, you could run into the snow the entire way. You will have reached Uhuru Peak, the highest peak on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

The dawn may be seen from the peak by more quick hikers. We now begin our descent from the peak, going straight down to the Mweka Hut Campsite while pausing at Barafu for lunch. We’ll have our final meal on the mountain later in the evening before a well-deserved rest.

• Hiking time: 8h to reach Uhuru Peak, 7 – 8h to descend to Mweka
• Distance: Approximately 7 km ascent – 23 km descent
• Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

Mweka Camp – Gate Out

Through a wonderful tropical forest alive with bird song and boasting rich undergrowth with significant botanical interest, we descend steadily on a well-built trail. Our path descends steeply to the Mweka (5,400 ft) gate of the Kilimanjaro National Park before continuing through coffee and banana plantations to the villages of Mweka . We will then be driven to our accommodation in Arusha from here. [4-6 walking hours].

• Hiking time: 3h
• Distance: Approximately 15 kms
• Habitat: Forest

Arusha - Lake Manyara National Park

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Arusha and taken on a wildlife drive across the East African Great Rift Valley’s Lake Manyara National Park . The park’s northern region is covered in thick forest, but as you travel south, the environment gets dryer.

In this park, you may expect to witness elephants, buffalo, giraffes, herds of baboons, impalas, and occasionally even lions who have taken to sleeping in trees to avoid the bothersome flies. While hippos attempt to cool down in the water from the heat of the sun, a large number of flamingos forage around the edges of the shallow soda lake.

After the wildlife drive concludes just before dusk, your driver will bring you up to the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands over winding, steep roads. You’ll get to take in some breathtaking views of the park and the lake below.

Dinner and overnight at Migombani Campsite

Lake Manyara National Park - Serengeti National Park

Before descending onto the short-grass plains of the Serengeti, the picturesque route to Serengeti National Park travels through the spectacular montane forest around the rim of Ngorongoro Crater . Fantastic views of the Ngorongoro crater, a few large extinct volcanoes, and the huge plains can be seen along the trip. The immense expanses of the Serengeti National Park will be explored over the course of two days. For grazers, the Serengeti is a utopia. On their yearly migration, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and other species like zebras and Thompson gazelles move through this distinctive ecosystem, constantly trailed by lions and hyenas seeking for food.

You are most likely to see elephants, buffalo, giraffes, ostriches, and a variety of other animals and bird species while on a game drive in Serengeti National Park . If you’re lucky, you could spot a leopard taking a nap in a tree or a cheetah hunting.

All meals are served in Mbugani Camp, your semi-luxury camp.

Serengeti National Park - Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast this morning, you’ll drive to Ngorongoro. In the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will then descend for a fantastic wildlife drive (with a picnic lunch). The Ngorongoro Crater boasts the largest wild animal population on earth because so few animals travel in and out of the crater’s 2000-foot high walls. Lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinoceroses, lions, and many other animals are among the species. The “Big Five” may be expected to be seen in a single day.

You will have dinner and spend the night at Farms of Dream Lodge.

Ngorongoro Crater - Arusha - Zanzibar

We go to Arusha town after an early breakfast. You’ll depart for Zanzibar in the middle of the morning. Your local representative will welcome you when you arrive in Zanzibar. After being driven to your accommodation, you will settle in and then start the Stone Town tour.

As you explore the beauties of this ancient city, which has managed to preserve much of its original character while still accepting modernization’s components warmly, albeit warily, your Stone Town tour of Zanzibar will be filled with several moments of awe.

Every detail of its rich history is seen in the stunning structures, some of which hint at the arrival of the Omanis in Zanzibar and others which speak of the roots of Swahili architecture combined with a Persian Shirazi influence. Numerous domestic homes with authentic Swahili-Omani design elements adorn the small streets.

You will spend the night at the Tausi Palace hotel.

Beach at Leisure in Kendwa Rocks

This beachfront hotel has options for every requirement and price range. In little time at all, the tranquil environment of Zanzibar will calm you down. From Zanzibar Town, Kendwa Rocks is located in the northernmost part of the island, about an hour’s drive away. The road falls to one of East Africa’s most stunning beaches.

Sunbathing could be sufficient, but you can also go diving, fishing, snorkeling, and taking leisurely small boat rides in the clear seas.

Moonlit nights on the white coral and seashell beach provide for a memorable experience, and stunning sunsets are a daily pleasure.

There are several options for lodging. Choose between a family room, a large suite, a wooden bungalow with a jacuzzi, or a coral stone cottage. Coconut palms and lovely tropical gardens around the apartments.

The morning is yours to spend at the beach. We will set up the transfer in accordance with your departure flight from Zanzibar Airport. Your departure flight will be dropped off at the airport by our local agent.

Zanzibar is still the best-kept secret in the Indian Ocean. The Zanzibar archipelago consists of over 50 islands – which vary from tiny outcrops to the larger, more populated islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. The beaches are often stunning: powdery white sand, shaded by palm trees. The sea is shallow, but venture further out into the sparkling , turquoise water and you’ll find coral reefs for great snorkelling and diving. The larger islands are lush and highly fertile and everywhere the air is suffused with the aroma of fruit and spices; it’s an intoxicating, exotic atmosphere. Zanzibar makes a great relaxing break after a challenging climb of Kilimanjaro.

Historical Stone Town Tour – 1/2 day tour

Stone town is one of the only historical Swahili coastal trading towns in East Africa still intact. The combination of small shops, bustling markets, Hindu temples and the diverse population of people meld the beauty of different cultures. The UNESCO declared Stone Town a World Heritage site in 2000. During our Stone Town tour you will see many interesting structures including the central market, the former slave market and Anglican Cathedral.

Spice Tour – 1/2 day tour

Zanzibar’s spices are famous worldwide. The Sultan of Oman built the first spice plantations on the island in 1873; to this day the gardens are filled with exotic spices, fruits and vegetables. Many of these plants serve medicinal purposes, which are still used by local residents. Rare plants grow here as well, such as lipstick and perfume trees. You will also visit the stucco garnished Kidichi Persian Baths.

Village Life Excursion – Full Day Tour

This tour lets you see the traditional fishing and farming life, you begin with a visit to a spice plantation. You will see how the crops are farmed, and taste fruits and spiced teas. Then, after a visit to the Kidichi Persian Baths you will continue on to Mchangani, a village untouched by time. You will see how women obtain well water and paint with henna. A villager will teach you how coconut is essential to the locals and show you how it’s prepared. A local blacksmith will explain making handmade nails, before we eat lunch in Nungwi around 1:30p.m. The restaurant sits on a flawless beach and guests are welcome to enter the water. Before returning home, a visit to the Mnarani Natural Aquarium will finish the trip.

Explore the dark slave caverns on the coral limestone lined coast of Mangapwani. These ancient structures were used to conceal slaves waiting to be delivered overseas to French Colonies. Lunch will be served nearby on the terraces. After lunch, a couple hours of entertainment can be enjoyed at the Mangapwani Water Sports Center.

Safari Blue – Full Day Tour

This tour allows you to view the intriguing natural environment of the Indian Ocean Bay. You will leave Fumba by dhow, the Kwale Coral Reef is the first stop. Kwale offers a gracious view of coral and colorful fish. Your guide will point out specific marine life and instruct you in snorkeling. The trip then continues to a sandbank to snack, while taking in the view of ocean water. Humpback whales may be spotted feasting on marine life at the ocean’s surface. The boat will then take you to an island where a feast of grilled fish, chicken, calamari and lobster will be served with cold soft drinks and beer.

Chumbe Island Day (MARINE PARK) Tour

This island is situated 8 miles southwest of Zanzibar Town. It is an uninhabited island dominated by coral rag forest and bordered on its western shore, by a fringing coral reef of exceptional biodiversity and beauty. Based on the initiative of Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd, a private company created for the management of Chumbe, the island was gazette in 1994 as a protected area by the Government of Zanzibar.

Dolphin tour

The main attraction is swimming with the Dolphins. Being very social themselves, if you are luck you even get to play with them. Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins and Humpback dolphins, which are sighted following a short boat trip from the village.

Sandbank Picnic

This is a guided tour, dhows and lunch will be shared, transfers to and from the hotel will be private. From the hotel we set sail by dhow toward Prison Island to view prison ruins and giant tortoises, followed by snorkeling the coral reef with a teacher. Then, we travel to a sandbank inhabited by varieties of bird life, to view more coral, observe the birds and hear stories, before a slow sail back to Stone Town.

Sunset Dhow Cruise

Enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise through the ocean water complete with a personal guide, musicians, a feast of Swahili Cuisine, white wine, cold local beer, as well as juices and cocktails. Serving white wine, cold local beer, fresh juices and cocktails to cheer your delicate palate you’ll also enjoy a tasting of Italian cheese with homemade jam, prawns, fried calamari, crispy cassava and other delicacies of Swahili cuisine. Tanzanian safaris offer quite sensational game viewing locations and Tanzania is one of the best countries in Africa in which to take a safari.

All the big names of mainstream Tanzanian safaris are located in the north. On a northern circuit safari, travelers depart from Arusha .  Lake Manyara National Park  and  Tarangire National Park  are little more than three hours away and are often incorporated as part of a longer safari. The most visited part of the northern circuit is the  Ngorongoro Crater , where wildlife grazes and hunts in one of the largest volcanic craters in the world.

If you are traveling from December to April, the annual wildebeest migration in Serengeti National Park is definitely not to be missed. A longer trek through the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands is also a beautiful way to explore northern Tanzania at a leisurely pace. Day-trips from Arusha to Mt. Meru and the Momela Lakes, located in Arusha National Park , incorporate short forest hikes and canoeing trips as a break from standard vehicle game drives.

Arusha National Park A popular day trip for visitors about to embark from the town of Arusha on longer northern circuit safaris, Arusha National Park is a gem of varied ecosystems and has spectacular views of Mt. Meru , the crater that gives the region its name. The small national park includes the summit of Mt. Meru, the Momela Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, and the lush forests that blanket its lower slopes. Game viewing around Momela Lakes is leisurely and while passing through the forest many visitors stop to search for troupes of rare Colobus monkeys. Ancient fig tree forests and crystal clear waters cascading from mountain streams are the attractions and pleasures of Arusha National Park.

Tarangire National Park Tarangire National Park has some of the highest population density of elephants anywhere in Tanzania, and its sparse vegetation makes it a beautiful and special location. Located just a few hours’ drive from the town of Arusha , Tarangire is a popular stop for safaris travelling through the northern circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti . The park extends into two game controlled areas and the wildlife is allowed to move freely throughout.

Before the rains, droves of gazelle, wildebeest, zebra, and giraffes migrate to Tarangire National Park’s scrub plains where the last grazing land still remains. Tarangire offers unparalleled game viewing and has more elephants than any other park. Families play around the ancient trunks of baobab trees and strip acacia bark from the thorn trees for their afternoon meal.

Lake Manyara National Park Located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers varied ecosystems, incredible bird life, and breathtaking views. Located on the way to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti , Lake Manyara National Park is well worth a stop in its own right. Its ground water forests, bush plains, baobab strewn cliffs, and algae-streaked hot springs offer incredible ecological variety in a small area, rich in wildlife and incredible numbers of birds.

The alkaline soda of Lake Manyara is home to an incredible array of bird life that thrives on its brackish waters. Pink flamingo stoop and graze by the thousands, colourful specks against the grey minerals of the lake shore. Yellow-billed storks swoop and corkscrew on thermal winds rising up from the escarpment, and herons flap their wings against the sun-drenched sky. Even reluctant bird-watchers will find something to watch and marvel at within the national park.

Lake Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions are another reason to pay this park a visit. The only kind of their species in the world, they make the ancient mahogany and elegant acacias their home during the rainy season, and are a well-known but rather rare feature of the northern park. In addition to the lions, the national park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world – a fact that makes for interesting game viewing of large families of the primates.

Serengeti National Park The Serengeti National Park is one of world’s greatest game parks. Meaning “endless plains” in the Maasai language, the Serengeti continues to be an ongoing source of inspiration to writers, filmmakers and photographers alike.

It is Tanzania’s oldest game reserve and is world-famous for the role it plays in the annual Great Migration, when an estimated two million herbivores – mostly wildebeest – migrate from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve. Hundreds of thousands of animals die along the way and the drama of this epic seasonal journey is a gripping, deeply moving experience and a wonderful photographic subject.

Its far-reaching plains of endless grass, tinged with the twisted shadows of acacia trees, have made it the quintessential image of a wild and untarnished Africa. Its large stone kopjes are home to rich ecosystems, and the sheer magnitude and scale of life that the plains support is staggering. Large prides of lions laze easily in the long grasses, plentiful families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trump to each other across the plains, and giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland, and the whole range of African wildlife is in awe-inspiring numbers.

The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara attract visitors from around the world, who flock to the open plains to witness the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet. More than a million animals make the seasonal journey to fresh pasture to the north, then the south, after the biannual rains. The sound of their thundering hooves, raising massive clouds of thick red dust, has become one of the legends of the Serengeti plains. The entire ecosystem thrives from the annual migration, from the lions and birds of prey that gorge themselves on the weak and the faltering to the gamut of hungry crocodiles that lie in patient wait at each river crossing for their annual feed.

But it’s not just the wildebeest that use the Serengeti to migrate. The adjacent reserves of Maswa and Ikorongo, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , and the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya all allow the animals and birds of the area a free range of movement to follow their seasonal migrations. Indeed, in the wake of the wildebeest migration, many of the less attention-grabbing features of the Serengeti are often overlooked. The park has varied zones in which each ecosystem is subtly different. Serener in the centre of the park is the most popular and most easily visited area. The Grumeti River in the Western Corridor is the location for the dramatic river crossing during the wildebeest migration. Maswa Game Reserve to the south offers a remote part of the park rewarding in its game-viewing and privacy, and Lobo near the Kenyan border offers a change to see plentiful game during the dry season.

Aside from traditional vehicle bound safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti plains has become a safari rite-of-passage for travel enthusiasts. The flights depart at dawn over the plains and take passengers close over the awakening herds of wildebeest and zebra, gazelle and giraffe. The extra altitude allows guests to witness the striking stretches of plains punctuated only by kopjes. Up in the sky, you have Africa all to yourself.

Ngorongoro Crater The spectacular landscape of the world renowned Ngorongoro Crater has to be seen to be believed. It forms part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) within the Serengeti ecosystem and the Crater itself is home to more than 25 000 large mammals. Once a large volcano that later collapsed, it is now the largest intact caldera in the world.

The Ngorongoro Crater is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the World,’ a visit to the crater is a main draw for tourists coming to Tanzania and a definite world-class attraction. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Masaai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area includes its eponymous famous crater, Olduvai Gorge, and huge expanses of highland plains, scrub bush, and forests that cover approximately 8300 square kilometres. A protected area, only indigenous tribes such as the Masaai are allowed to live within its borders. Lake Ndutu and Masek, both alkaline soda lakes are home to rich game populations, as well as a series of peaks and volcanoes and make the Conservation Area a unique and beautiful landscape. Of course, the crater itself, actually a type of collapsed volcano called a caldera, is the main attraction. Accommodation is located on its ridges and after a beautiful descent down the crater rim, passing lush rain forest and thick vegetation, the flora opens to grassy plains throughout the crater floor. The game viewing is truly incredible and views of the surrounding Crater Highlands out of this world.

This truly magical place is home to Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakeys discovered the hominoid remains of a 1.8 million year old skeleton of Australopithecus boisei, one of the distinct links of the human evolutionary chain. In a small canyon just north of the crater, the Leakeys and their team of international archaeologists unearthed the ruins of at least three distinct hominoid species, and also came upon a complete series of hominoid footprints estimated to be over 3.7 million years old. Evacuated fossils show that the area is one of the oldest sites of hominoid habitation in the world.

The Ngorongoro Crater and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are without a doubt some of the most beautiful parts of Tanzania, steeped in history and teeming with wildlife. Besides vehicle safaris to Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, and surrounding attractions, hiking treks through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are becoming increasingly popular options. We had a sensational day with Daniel and Justin. We felt so welcome and cared for. The things we saw were incredibly beautiful. The tropical walk with Justin to the waterfall was awe-inspiring a chance to be close to wildlife. Justin showed us the coffee-making process, treated us to the best cup of coffee ever, and introduced us to his beautiful young family.
