Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Charlottetown is the capital of Canada’s smallest province, Prince Edward Island, as well as its largest city, though it has fewer than 35,000 residents. Despite its modest size, the city has an impressive number of Victorian houses and buildings and great parks waiting to be explored. For Canadians, it is perhaps most famous as the Birthplace of Confederation. It was here, mostly at Province House, that an 1864 conference led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada. 

Prince Edward Island is linked to New Brunswick on the mainland of Canada by the 13-kilometer (eight-mile) Confederation Bridge that soars over the Northumberland Strait. A remarkable feat of engineering, the bridge opened in 1997 and is the longest in the world over icy waters.

Sites within downtown Charlottetown include the lovely Victoria Row, which becomes a pedestrian mall each summer, and other historic buildings, some of which are now museums. Nearby Prince Edward Island National Park is home to white-sand beaches and hiking and biking trails—plus fans can see the house and farm that inspired the beloved book  Anne of Green Gables . During your visit, you can also learn about the daily lives, past and present, of residents on lighthouse and boat tours.

Where You Dock in Charlottetown – Prince Edward Island

The Port of Charlottetown is located in downtown Charlottetown, and is within walking distance of shops and restaurants.

The cruise terminal has a few souvenir vendors and a small cafe.

From here you can catch a taxi to go exploring, or meet up with your excursion group.

Getting Around Charlottetown – Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown is a very walkable city, and the cruise terminal is located in Charlottetown’s downtown area.

Taxis within PEI are government-regulated and a taxi fare within Charlottetown proper will run between $6-9 CDN. Drivers will also give tours for approximately $60/hour, or can take you out of town, to some of the island’s other sites.

Car Rental – if you want to go exploring around the island, renting a car is an ideal way to do it.  Keep in mind, you may not be driving a long distance, but the maximum speed limit is 90kms/ hour and they do not have multi-lane highways to get you around quickly. PEI tourism has designed Coastal Driving tours , which can cover the entire coast-line of the island. If you are only in port for a day, the Central Coastal drive will take you up to Cavendish Beach and Green Gables.

Shopping In Charlottetown – Prince Edward Island

The cruise terminal, transformed from a potato warehouse,  has a few vendors selling souvenirs, apparel, jewelry and handmade art. As you venture outside of the terminal, you will find yourself in downtown Charlottetown, filled with various shops, boutiques, and gifted artisans. Start at the Historic Waterfront, then stroll up Queen street, then down Victoria Row.

If a shopping mall is what you are looking for, Charlottetown Mall is located on the outskirts of town, and is easily accessible by public transportation or taxi. Walmart is located across the street.

Dining In Charlottetown – Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is famous for their seafood, which is known the world over. From lobster, crab, mussels, oysters, clams and an abundance of fish, you know that what you are eating is the freshest of the fresh.

Even if seafood isn’t your thing, most restaurants use local ingredients and put a lot of care into what they serve, for the best experience possible.

Water Prince Corner Shop and Lobster Pound – rated number 4 of 100 seafood restaurants on the whole island, Water Prince is a cozy restaurant/seafood store which is always busy. If you go, expect a wait, but the food is worth it and the prices are based on market value. Try the deluxe seafood platter, homemade seafood chowder or fish and chips.

Gahan House – if craft brews are your thing, look no further than PEI’s own Gahan House.  Try their handcrafted ales alongside some delicious eats. The services is great in a pub environment. Try the nachos, mussels or one of their unique sandwiches before heading to the basement to get a sneak peak of the microbrewery.

Chip Shack – If you are just looking for a quick snack and want to try some of the best french fries on the island, visit the Queen of Fries at the Chip Shack, which is a short distance from the cruise pier. Not only have they perfected hand-cut island fries, but they also have gluten-free fish and chips, battered fresh per order. A few picnic tables are available to sit at on a nice day.

Confederation Centre for the Arts – This art gallery and performance centre offers small, local exhibits as well as a theatre for PEI’s thriving arts scene. Check here to see what is being performed when you’re in port.

St. Dunstan’s Basilica – For the architecture buffs, this spectacular basilica, built in 1816, is located a short distance from the port. The stained glass windows are a highlight among the Victorian Gothic styling of the church. Other historical sights of interest are the Beaconfield Historic House, of which you can take a guided tour ($), or the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation located next to the Beaconfield House.

Cavendish Beach – Cavendish Beach is all about family fun. There is a water park, amusement park, golf courses (both regular and mini), Ripley’s Believe-it-or-Not,   beautiful beaches and forest trails, and much more.

Green Gables Heritage Place – Just outside of Cavendish is the home of Anne of Green Gables, located in Prince Edward Island National Park. This is the site which inspired L.M. Montgomery to write her world-famous tales of Anne. Here you can tour the Green Gables house and take a stroll through the Haunted Woods or Balsam Hollow.

P.E.I. looking to attract builder to set up modular home fabrication plant

All 4 atlantic provinces look to encourage pre-fab homes to address housing crisis.

The P.E.I. government is hoping to attract a private company to set up shop on the Island and build modular housing units.

In a request for expressions of interest issued Friday, the province said it would offer support for that in the form of providing a government-owned site that could be used to house the facility.

The province said the facility could also qualify for financial incentives through existing programs.

According to the EOI document, the company would have to be prepared to dedicate the majority of its production to the P.E.I. market for five years.

At the moment, dealers on Prince Edward Island act as agents for manufacturers elsewhere in the region, including some major New Brunswick companies: Kent Homes in Bouctouche, Prestige in Sussex and Supreme in Tracadie-Sheila.

Expanding the production of pre-fabricated homes in P.E.I. was included as one of the goals in the province's housing strategy, released in February.

The strategy also highlights the need to push ahead with more projects that utilize the modular units "to realize the benefits of efficient construction, use of materials, labour and energy."

A number of recent builds in P.E.I. have gone up using pre-fabricated units shipped in from outside the province, including apartment buildings in Charlottetown and Alberton  that are operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association and built with provincial and federal funding support.

The general manager of the P.E.I. Construction Association, Sam Sanderson, welcomed the effort to have the units built within the province.

But Sanderson said any new facility set up to build pre-fabricated homes would run into some of the same challenges faced by the existing construction industry on the Island, including a shortage of skilled labour.

"That's the first question I'm going to ask: where's the labour coming from?" Sanderson told CBC News.

"Are we taking more people out of the current labour market right now to build manufactured, pre-manufactured housing?"

Sanderson said he'd also like to see the province break down costs to determine whether using modular units saves money compared to traditional construction.

The province's EOI stipulates the company would have to "implement processes and/or technology to achieve cost effectiveness."

In January, the housing ministers from the four Atlantic provinces identified factory-built housing as part of the solution needed to address the current housing crisis, pledging to find ways to boost production in the region.

Low vacancy rate, high demand

For years, P.E.I. has been among the fastest-growing provinces in the country. It's also been among the hardest hit by the housing crisis.

Last October, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation pegged P.E.I.'s apartment vacancy rate at 1.1 per cent, tied with Nova Scotia for the lowest in the country.

This year, P.E.I. had its strongest first quarter ever for housing starts  with 394. The province has set an annual target of 2,000 new builds per year, a level only achieved once before — back in 1973.

The five locations the province identified in its EOI as possible sites for the modular construction facility are:

• Industrial Crescent, Summerside.
• Train Station Road, Albany.
• West Prince Business Park, Bloomfield.
• Commercial Road, Montague.
• Slemon Park, Summerside.

A spokesperson for the province said Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Trade Gilles Arsenault could provide an interview on the province's plans after the closing date for the request for expressions of interest, which is June 6.

In an emailed statement, Housing Minister Rob Lantz said the province needs to look for new ways of building homes to meet current and future population growth. 

"Modular construction presents an opportunity to quickly and efficiently create new housing stock," Lantz said in the statement. "We will continue to work with industry and across government to facilitate innovative approaches to housing solutions for residents of P.E.I."
