River Pilot Tragically Dies While Boarding Cruise Ship

A tragic incident occurred on May 5th when Yoshihiro Osuga, a 69-year-old river pilot who was responsible for navigating a Princess cruise ship into Nagasaki, fell into the sea and was later pronounced dead.

river pilot

The Nagasaki Coast Guard Office received a radio report around 5:30 a.m. stating that the pilot had fallen into the sea while transferring from the pilot boat to the Diamond Princess before entering the harbor.

Although the river pilot was rescued by a lifeboat from the cruise ship, he was confirmed dead approximately two hours after the incident.

The river pilot’s death and the cause of the fall are still under investigation by local authorities, but preliminary findings point to the man losing his footing because of a wave.

This story was first reported by the cruise industry website Crew Center .

What is a River Pilot?

river pilot

River pilots hold a critical role in steering ships safely through waterways, primarily in ports where navigation can be arduous.

They possess specialized knowledge of local waterways, including currents, tides, and hazards, which they leverage to counsel the captain on the optimal route to take.

Before arriving at the port, pilots board the ship from a pilot boat before taking control of the navigation. The same is done in reverse order when a ship is leaving a harbor. The river pilot boards the ship at the pier, navigates the ship through the harbor, and leaves the ship and is brought back to shore via a pilot boat.

Worldwide, pilots are required to complete a rigorous training program and pass a series of exams to obtain a license.

This tragedy spotlights the indispensable role that pilots undertake in safeguarding the secure navigation of both cargo cruise ships and the hazards they face while on the job.

A passenger was killed after an incident on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship

  • A passenger died after an incident on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas.
  • The cruise ship was traveling from Florida to the Bahamas.
  • The passenger was injured on the cruise and died at a medical facility.

Insider Today

A passenger was killed after an incident on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship on Saturday, the cruise line told Business Insider in a statement.

The passenger — a 16-year-old boy — died after he fell from a balcony and landed on the deck, TMZ first reported , citing passengers on board. BI could not independently verify the passenger's age or details regarding the fall.

The passenger was sailing on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida, to Nassau, Bahamas, a source told BI. He later died at a medical facility.

Royal Caribbean declined to confirm how the passenger died to BI. A passenger on board told Fox News an announcement was made requesting that passengers donate blood.

A photo published by Fox News showed several balconies on the cruise barricaded with yellow tape. Another photo showed what appears to be a blue tent set up behind a grey partition and a uniformed person standing nearby. BI could not independently verify the authenticity of these photos.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of a guest and our hearts go out to the family. Out of respect for them, we won't provide any further comment," Royal Caribbean told BI.

Additional boating incidents have occurred in recent months. In April, a passenger was killed after they fell off a Virgin Voyages cruise and landed on the ship's lower deck. In August, a crew member was killed after falling overboard from a Viking Cruises ship.

Correction — Nov. 29, 2023: This story has been corrected to more accurately reflect the cruise line's comment to Business Insider that the passenger died after an incident on the cruise ship. Royal Caribbean did not state how the passenger died.

Why falling off a cruise ship is so deadly

cruise death may 2023

A 35-year-old Australian man who fell overboard on his way back to Brisbane. A Louisiana teen who jumped ship on a dare. A 7-year-old boy who died after falling into the ocean, followed by his mother, who tried to save him.

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are incredibly rare. But when they happen, they usually end in death, experts say.

The Coast Guard said last week it had given up on its search for 30-year-old Jaylen Hill, who went overboard during a four-day Carnival Cruise trip from Florida to the Bahamas. It searched more than 1,300 square miles for him.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the Hill family,” the Coast Guard said on Twitter.

Hill was reported missing by a travel companion hours after he was last seen. Experts say such time gaps between a fall and the start of a search are a big part of why overboard incidents are so deadly.

Even if crew members are immediately aware of the incident, it takes the average ship at least a mile to turn around. The ship usually dispatches life boats and alerts authorities, such as the Coast Guard, which may not be close enough to assist, said Ross Klein, a cruise industry researcher and retired professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. In many cases, ships are not aware that someone has gone overboard until a travel partner reports them missing, which could be hours or days later.

By then, it’s often too late.

“It’s a huge ocean. Just being found at all would be incredible,” Klein said. “The longer you are out there, whether you’re alive or not, the lower the possibility of being recovered. The vast majority of people are gone forever.”

Even in cases where a fall is noticed immediately, a lot can go wrong.

“The fall itself can kill you, a cruise ship engine can suck you underneath the water, fear and anxiety or intoxication could prevent you from swimming — there’s many different scenarios,” said Brett Rivkind, a Miami lawyer who specializes in maritime law and represents families in overboard cases. A person can also become unconscious from hypothermia in as little as 15 minutes , depending on sea temperatures.

At least 386 people were reported to have gone overboard, voluntarily or by accident, from 2000 to 2020, according to data Klein compiled. He began tracking overboard cases in 1995 using media reports, tips, information requests and other methods, later serving as an expert witness before Congress.

“People overboard was an area that hadn’t been studied, and, really, there was no data,” he said. “Even within the industry, they said back in 2012 and 2013 before Congress that they don’t keep track of this.”

While it’s true that tens of millions of people vacation on cruise ships every year without incident, experts say a combination of mitigatable risks and loose safety regulations are contributing to deaths.

In a 2020 study , a professor examined more than 620 cruise deaths from 2000 through the end of 2019. He found that overboard incidents — falling, jumping or being thrown — were the leading cause of death among passengers and crew members, accounting for 23 percent of all deaths.

“It’s a lot more common than people think,” said the professor, Travis Heggie, who tracks tourist deaths around the world at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Death rates for overboard incidents vary significantly among cruise lines, according to Klein’s calculations, which he said proves more can be done to protect passengers.

Only a handful of cruise lines have installed man-overboard systems, which use sensors or other technology to immediately detect when a person has fallen or jumped off the vessel, Klein said. (The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requires vessels to “integrate technology” for detecting falls overboard “to the extent that such technology is available,” and some operators have argued that existing technology is not reliable enough yet.)

The safest cruise lines were able to rescue only 40 percent of overboard passengers, and most save far fewer, he said. The rescue rate was as low as 6 percent on at least one cruise line.

7 facts about the world's biggest cruise ship

The amount of alcohol being served on cruise ships is also a concern cited by several experts, who said passengers are being overserved. Alcohol is involved in up to 60 percent of overboard cases, according to Klein, and alcoholic drinks have become one of the leading sources of onboard revenue for cruise lines in recent years.

“Cruise lines make a lot of money serving alcohol,” Rivkind said, “and what they’ve done over the years is, they’ve moved to all-you-can-drink policies. They often allow them to drink as many as 15 alcoholic beverages a day. To me, that’s a big source of the problem.”

Defenders of the industry often characterize cruise ships as a microcosm of a city, with the same problems that come up on land. But Heggie and others disagree.

“Nobody is saying 23 percent of hotel client deaths are from falling off balconies,” he said.

Passenger Dies After Falling Over Balcony onto Lower Deck on Virgin Voyages Cruise: 'Deeply Saddened'

A Virgin Voyages cruise ship turned course after one of its passengers fell and died while on board

cruise death may 2023

Authorities are investigating the death of a passenger who fell from a balcony to a deck while on a cruise ship on Sunday.

The passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, was on a Virgin Voyages cruise ship on Sunday. The boat had left Miami and was heading to Roatán, Honduras, when they fell, a Virgin Voyages spokesperson says in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

"Yesterday evening shortly after departure there was a medical emergency involving one of our passengers," says the spokesperson. "This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away. We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and our hearts and thoughts are with this person's loved ones."

They add that the ship "was immediately redirected back to Miami, where the team are working closely with local officials."

The ship was back in Miami early Sunday and has since set sail again with an adjusted itinerary; Roatán is no longer a destination. The vessel will head for Cozumel rather than Costa Maya on Wednesday, says the spokesperson.

Virgin Voyages tells PEOPLE in its statement the change is because of weather conditions unrelated to the fatal incident that occurred on the boat.

The spokesperson added that the privacy of the deceased's family is a priority and that the company is not disclosing additional information at this time.

A spokesperson added, per Insider, that the deceased fell on another passenger on the lower deck. That person was not injured.

A vlogger on the ship, who goes by The Shiplife on YouTube, shared his account of the incident. In a video posted Monday, a woman is heard saying over an intercom, "So once again, we are now headed back to Miami , and we'll arrive around 1:30 a.m."

"At the moment, we do not have a departure time for tomorrow after our arrival, but we'll share all relevant information with you as soon as we have updates," she said as the vlogger and the people around him appeared to be in shock.

He later shared that the announcement came around 11 p.m. local time.

"At the time, we didn't know exactly what was going on ... there were rumors stating that somebody had passed away but nothing was confirmed at the time," he added.

The captain's announcement came around 8 a.m. local time, according to the video, when he said that the cruise line was "deeply saddened" that a passenger had fallen and died.

The 44-year-old woman, who was not identified by name in the announcement, died on a voyage to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, the FBI's field office in Columbia, South Carolina, said Sunday.

The cruise left Charleston on Feb. 27, said Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. She most likely died early Feb. 28, said Kevin Wheeler, a public affairs specialist for the FBI's Columbia field office.

Medical staff and crew members attempted lifesaving measures, the FBI said.

The woman had been traveling with her husband, Lupoli said. Her husband got off the cruise in Nassau on March 1, and her remains were also removed, he said.

FBI's evidence investigators processed the passenger's room once the ship returned to Charleston as planned on Saturday, the agency said.

The FBI said that the death was an isolated incident and that other passengers faced no threat before or after the woman was found dead.

Nobody is in custody, Wheeler said. He said he could not comment on the circumstances of the woman's death or on any information about her husband or the status of the autopsy.

Lupoli said in a statement that authorities in the Bahamas "have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy" and that Carnival is "fully cooperating."

"This is a matter for authorities in The Bahamas and Charleston and we have no further comments," Lupoli said.

Spokespeople for the Royal Bahamas Police Force could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Safety and Security Measures on Cruise Ships

Cruise ship operators prioritize the safety and well-being of their passengers and crew. To ensure a secure and enjoyable journey, these floating resorts are equipped with various safety measures and protocols. Here are some of the key safety and security features you can typically find on a cruise ship:

  • Lifeboats and Life Rafts: Cruise ships are equipped with an adequate number of lifeboats and life rafts that can accommodate all passengers and crew in case of an emergency. These vessels are regularly inspected and maintained to ensure they are in working order.
  • Emergency Drills: Before the ship sets sail, mandatory safety drills are conducted to familiarize passengers with emergency procedures. These drills include instructions on how to put on life jackets, locate emergency exits, and gather at designated assembly points.
  • Medical Facilities: Cruise ships have onboard medical facilities staffed with qualified medical professionals to handle any medical emergencies or health-related issues that may arise during the voyage.
  • Security Personnel: Trained security personnel are present onboard to ensure the safety and security of passengers. They monitor the ship, handle any security incidents, and provide assistance to passengers in need.
  • CCTV Surveillance: Cruise ships have a comprehensive network of surveillance cameras strategically placed throughout the ship. These cameras help monitor activities onboard and aid in identifying and resolving any security concerns.
  • Fire Safety Measures: Cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems. Regular fire drills are conducted to train crew members on fire safety procedures and to ensure the prompt detection and control of any potential fire hazard.
  • Advanced Navigation Systems: Cruise ships are equipped with advanced navigation systems, including radar and GPS technology, to ensure safe navigation and avoid collisions with other vessels or obstacles.
  • Strict Compliance with International Regulations: Cruise ships adhere to strict international regulations, such as those set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to ensure the highest level of safety and security standards.

It’s important to note that cruise ship companies continuously evaluate and update their safety protocols to meet or exceed industry standards. Passengers should familiarize themselves with the safety information provided by the cruise line and follow all instructions and guidelines for a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

Understanding the Statistics: How Many People Die on Cruise Ships Each Year?

When considering the safety of cruise ships, it’s natural to wonder about the number of fatalities that occur onboard each year. However, it’s important to put these statistics into perspective and consider the vast number of people who embark on cruises annually.

According to industry data, the number of deaths on cruise ships is relatively low compared to the total number of passengers and crew members. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports that the mortality rate on cruises is considerably lower than on land-based vacations or other modes of transportation.

It is estimated that the annual mortality rate on cruise ships ranges between 0.14 and 0.25 deaths per 100,000 passengers. This statistic demonstrates that cruising remains a safe mode of travel, with a low risk of fatalities.

It’s crucial to understand that the majority of deaths on cruise ships are due to natural causes, such as age-related illnesses or pre-existing medical conditions. While unfortunate, these incidents are reflective of the general population’s mortality rate.

Cruise ships have medical facilities and staff available to provide immediate care in the event of a medical emergency. However, there are cases where passengers may require more advanced medical attention beyond what the ship can provide. In these instances, the ship will assist in arranging transportation to the nearest medical facility on land.

It’s important to note that accidents or incidents resulting in fatalities on cruise ships are rare. Cruise lines have implemented strict safety protocols to minimize the risks associated with onboard accidents, such as slip and falls, drowning, or other accidents that could occur during shore excursions.

By understanding the statistics and realizing that the risk of death on a cruise ship is relatively low, passengers can enjoy their vacation with confidence and peace of mind. It’s always recommended to prioritize personal safety, follow the ship’s safety guidelines, and maintain responsible behavior to ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

Common Causes of Death on Cruise Ships

While the overall mortality rate on cruise ships is relatively low, it’s essential to understand the common causes of death that may occur onboard. These causes can vary, and it’s important for passengers to be aware of the potential risks. Here are some of the common causes of death on cruise ships:

  • Natural Causes: The majority of deaths on cruise ships are due to natural causes, such as heart attacks, strokes, or other medical conditions. Cruise ships have medical facilities and professionals onboard to provide immediate care, but in some cases, passengers may succumb to pre-existing health conditions.
  • Accidents: While accidents leading to fatalities on cruise ships are relatively rare, they can still occur. Slip and falls on wet surfaces, drowning incidents in pools or at sea, or accidents during shore excursions can result in severe injuries or death. Passengers should exercise caution and follow all safety guidelines to minimize the risk of accidents.
  • Medical Emergencies: Some medical emergencies that occur on cruise ships can result in fatalities. While cruise ships have medical facilities, there may be cases where the onboard medical team is unable to provide the necessary treatment, and evacuation to a land-based medical facility becomes necessary.
  • Intentional Acts: Tragic incidents involving suicides or homicides can, unfortunately, occur on cruise ships. Cruise lines take these incidents very seriously and work closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate and address any illegal activities or acts of violence.
  • Communicable Diseases: Outbreaks of communicable diseases, such as norovirus or COVID-19, can happen on cruise ships. These outbreaks can lead to severe illness and, in rare cases, fatalities. Cruise lines have implemented strict health protocols and increased sanitation measures to prevent the spread of such diseases.

It’s crucial to note that while these causes of death may occur on cruise ships, they are still relatively rare compared to the total number of passengers and crew members who sail each year. Cruise lines continuously strive to improve safety measures and protocols to minimize the risks associated with these common causes of death and ensure the well-being of their guests.

Passengers can contribute to their own safety by following all safety guidelines, participating in safety drills, and reporting any concerns or incidents to the ship’s crew. By being aware of the potential risks and taking necessary precautions, passengers can enjoy their cruise with peace of mind.

Accidents and Incidents: Notable Cases of Deaths on Cruise Ships

While deaths on cruise ships are relatively rare, there have been notable incidents over the years that have raised awareness of the importance of safety onboard. It’s important to highlight these cases to understand the measures taken by the cruise industry to improve safety standards. Here are a few notable cases:

  • Costa Concordia (2012): One of the most well-known incidents is the Costa Concordia disaster. In January 2012, the cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Italy, resulting in the death of 32 people. The incident highlighted the importance of proper navigation, emergency response procedures, and crew training.
  • Explorer of the Seas (2014): In January 2014, an outbreak of norovirus occurred on the Explorer of the Seas, resulting in more than 600 passengers and crew members falling ill. While no deaths were reported in this incident, it served as a reminder of the potential health risks that can arise on cruise ships.
  • Grandeur of the Seas (2013): A fire broke out on the Grandeur of the Seas in May 2013, causing the ship to lose power and resulting in several injuries. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. The incident underscored the importance of fire safety measures and crew training in responding to emergencies.
  • MS Westerdam (2020): In February 2020, the MS Westerdam faced scrutiny when it was denied entry into several ports due to concerns over COVID-19. While no cases of the virus were found onboard, this incident highlighted the challenges faced by the cruise industry during global health crises.
  • Other Incidents: There have been cases where individuals have fallen overboard from cruise ships, resulting in fatalities. These incidents highlight the need for enhanced safety measures, including improved railing designs and surveillance systems, to prevent such tragedies.

It’s important to note that these incidents, while tragic, are not representative of the overall safety record of the cruise industry. Cruise lines actively learn from these incidents and continuously enhance safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Passengers can contribute to their own safety by familiarizing themselves with emergency procedures, obeying safety guidelines, and reporting any concerns or incidents to the ship’s crew. By working together, the cruise industry and its passengers can continue to prioritize safety and ensure a secure and enjoyable cruise experience.

Safety Tips for Passengers on Cruise Ships

While cruise ships have robust safety protocols in place, it’s important for passengers to take personal responsibility for their safety onboard. By following these safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience:

  • Attend Safety Drills: Participate in mandatory safety drills, including the muster drill, which provides important information on emergency procedures, life jacket usage, and evacuation routes. Pay attention to crew instructions and familiarize yourself with the location of emergency exits.
  • Stay Alert and Observe Safety Signage: Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to safety signage throughout the ship. These signs provide important instructions and warnings about potential hazards.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Maintain good personal hygiene by washing your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom. Use hand sanitizers provided onboard, and follow any additional instructions during times of outbreaks or illness concerns.
  • Adhere to Pool and Water Safety: Follow all pool and water safety guidelines provided by the cruise ship. Pay attention to depth markers, swim within designated areas, and supervise children closely when they are in or near water.
  • Drink Responsibly: If you choose to consume alcohol, do so responsibly. Excessive alcohol consumption can impair judgment and increase the risk of accidents or incidents. Always drink in moderation and know your limits.
  • Be Cautious on Excursions: When participating in shore excursions or exploring ports of call, follow the instructions and guidelines provided by the excursion operators or cruise line. Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution when engaging in adventurous activities.
  • Secure Valuables: Use the safe in your cabin to store valuable items such as passports, cash, and jewelry. Avoid displaying expensive belongings in public areas, and be cautious of pickpockets or theft in crowded areas.
  • Report Any Concerns or Incidents: If you witness any suspicious behavior, encounter potential safety hazards, or experience an incident yourself, report it immediately to the ship’s crew or security personnel.
  • Stay Informed: Follow all announcements and updates provided by the cruise ship regarding safety, schedules, and any changes in itinerary. Stay informed about any additional safety measures or protocols implemented during your voyage.

By following these safety tips and guidelines, you can minimize the risks and ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise vacation. Remember, personal safety is a collective effort, and passengers should always prioritize their well-being and the well-being of others onboard.

Cruise ships provide an incredible opportunity for travelers to explore the world while enjoying luxurious amenities and unforgettable experiences. A massive cruise ship likely struck and killed an endangered whale before sailing into the East River Saturday morning — and there’s no telling how long the dead mammal was dragged by the boat before it was discovered, according to marine experts.

The 44-foot adult female Sei whale was found as the MSC Meraviglia docked at the Port of Brooklyn, a spokesperson for MSC cruises confirmed.

The unlucky cetacean was removed from the 19-deck ship and towed to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, Tuesday for a necropsy, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez — but emphasized it is too soon to tell whether or not the whale was dead before impact.

Rob DiGiovanni, the founder and chief scientist of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, however, told The Post it was more than likely that the “interaction with the vessel contributed to her death.”

“It looks like she was eating,” DiGiovanni said, indicating she was a healthy whale with relatively fresh food in her stomach.

The hulking Meraviglia — the same ship that rescued 24 distressed Cuban migrants from a boat off the coast of Florida last year — weighs 171,600 gross tonage and stands 214 feet tall.

When and where the whale was struck remains a mystery, but Sei whales are typically observed in deeper waters far from the coastline, according to NOAA.

They are one of the largest whale species and are internationally protected, with vessel strikes listed as one of the biggest threats to its dwindling population.

The body was “pretty decomposed,” DiGiovanni revealed, but said that does not help professionals lock down a timeline of its death.

The temperature of the water, especially on the higher side, can accelerate the decomposition process by days.

The tragic event is unfortunately not uncommon, according to DiGiovanni, but it’s nearly impossible to track just how often it occurs because the whales could sink to the bottom of the ocean floor after being struck.

Ship staff or guests also might not even notice a striking, considering just how large cruise vessels stand, making even the world’s largest mammal look like an ant.

Such strikes could contribute to the unusual mortuary event in the New York Bight Apex — the waters from Fire Island to the Manasquan Inlet in New Jersey.

Starting in 2016, humpback, Mackey and North Atlantic Right whale deaths skyrocketed from one to three per year to 12 to 14 per year, DiGiovanni said.

The shocking death surge is a tragic side effect of whales flocking to Big Apple waters in higher numbers per year, creating a Catch-22 situation.

While some stay year-round, the amount of whales enjoying the East River jumps as spring rolls around.

“We start to see increases in whale sightings now, so we urge boaters to use caution in the waters,” DiGiovanni said, encouraging ship captains to consider the “Slow: Children at Play” mentality when taking on the open seas.

NOAA reiterated this sentiment: “Mariners operating along the US East Coast are encouraged to slow their vessel speed, stay alert, and report any sightings of right whales or any dead, injured, or entangled whales.”

Cruise ship arrives in NYC port with 44-foot dead endangered whale caught on its bow

Updated on: May 9, 2024 / 11:41 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A cruise ship sailed into a New York City port with a 44-foot dead whale across its bow, marine authorities said.

The whale, identified as an endangered sei whale , was caught on the ship's bow when it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn on Saturday, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez said. A necropsy conducted later confirmed the whale's species and determined that the creature was a mature female, said the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, a nonprofit organization that conducted the exam on an marine mammal.

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises said the whale was on the MSC Meraviglia, which docked at Brooklyn before sailing to ports in New England and Canada.

"We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale," officials with the cruise line said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life," the officials said, adding that the Geneva-based MSC Cruises follows all regulations designed to protect whales, such as altering itineraries in certain regions to avoid hitting the animals .

The dead whale was relocated to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and towed to shore there to allow for better access to equipment and to conduct a necropsy, Gomez said.

The necropsy, an autopsy on an animal, was conducted on Tuesday, Gomez said. Samples collected from the whale will help biologists determine whether it was already dead when it was struck by the ship, she said.

Basic results of that exam showed evidence of tissue trauma in the area of the whale's right shoulder blade and a fractured right flipper, said the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. In a post shared Wednesday to its Facebook page, the organization also said those tests revealed the whale's gastrointestinal tract was "full of food." Samples of its organs will undergo toxicology reviews and analyses to identify any potential tissue diseases.

"The tissue and bone samples collected will help biologists determine if the vessel interaction occurred pre or post mortem," said the conservation society.

Sei whales are typically observed in deeper waters far from the coastline, Gomez said. They are one of the largest whale species and are internationally protected.

According to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation , sei whales eat 2,000 pounds of fish and plankton per day. They can grow up to 60 feet long, weigh as much as 50 tons and live on average between 50-70 years.

The incident marks the latest endangered whale to be found dead along the East Coast.  Last month, federal authorities said a North Atlantic right whale that was found floating 50 miles offshore east of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was killed in a collision with a ship .

In March, NOAA said the first  North Atlantic right whale  baby born this season had  died after being hit by a vessel .

Environmental groups have called for tighter regulations on commercial fishing and shipping to try to save the whales.

In Massachusetts, there's a proposal to put  speed limits on fast ferries  to Cape Cod and the Islands to protect whales. The ferry companies counter that this would drastically reduce service, and say their captains have never seen a right whale on the job.

Cruise ship arrives at New York City harbor with dead whale caught on bow

The 44ft-long whale corpse was an endangered sei whale, which will now be examined to determine how it died

A cruise ship has journeyed into New York City’s harbor bearing a gruesome cargo in the form of a huge, dead whale sprawled across its bow.

The incident happened on Saturday, according to local US media reports , and the event is being held by some as further evidence of the unfortunate impact on sea life that large vessels can have.

The 44ft-long whale corpse was an endangered sei whale and was caught on the ship’s bow when it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson, Andrea Gomez.

The boat involved was the Meraviglia, which docked in New York before sailing on a journey to ports in New England and Canada. It is owned by Geneva-based MSC Cruises .

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” officials with the cruise line said in a statement, who added that the company had regulations in place to avoid collisions with whales and other animals at sea.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life,” the statement said.

The whale is now the subject of a necropsy to try and determine how it died, notably if it was already dead when hit by the cruise ship. Sei whales are one of the largest whales and are a protected species.

NYC mayor condemns chokehold death: 'Jordan Neely did not deserve to die'

"His death is a tragedy that never should have happened," Mayor Eric Adams said.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned the death of Jordan Neely Wednesday, who died after a fellow subway passenger was captured on video putting him in a chokehold.

"Jordan Neely did not deserve to die," Adams said in prepared remarks Wednesday amid growing calls for an arrest in the case, including from Neely's family.

"Jordan Neely's life mattered. He was suffering from severe mental illness, but that was not the cause of his death. His death is a tragedy that never should have happened," the mayor said, referring to Neely as "a Black man like me."

"No family should have to suffer a loss like this," Adams said.

Adams, a moderate Democrat, has been criticized by progressives, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for not more strongly condemning the actions of the individual who put Neely in the chokehold. In his first comments on the incident last week, Adams said in a statement, in part, "Any loss of life is tragic. There's a lot we don't know about what happened here, so I'm going to refrain from commenting further."

A grand jury is likely to weigh in on the case as soon as this week, law enforcement sources told ABC News. A grand jury would determine whether criminal charges are warranted, according to the sources.

Neely, a homeless man, died after another subway passenger held him in a chokehold for several minutes on May 1, according to witnesses and police. The 30-year-old's death has been ruled a homicide by the medical examiner's office.

Some witnesses reportedly told police that Neely was yelling and harassing passengers on the train before being subdued by the other passenger.

According to police sources, Neely had a documented mental health history. Neely had been previously arrested for several incidents on the subway, though it's unclear how many, if any, led to convictions.

During his 15-minute remarks on Wednesday, Adams pushed for expanded mental health services. He touted a bill he introduced last year intended to give the state more authority to intervene to assist people suffering from mental illness and encouraged the legislature to pass it.

"We cannot and will not accept this state of affairs," Adams said. "We will not walk by those in need, step over those who are suffering or ignore those calls for help. We will respond with care, compassion and action."

The mayor did not mention the circumstances of Neely's death or Daniel Penny, the man whom a bystander filmed putting Neely in a chokehold on the subway train.

PHOTO: New York City Mayor Eric Adams attends a New York City Police Academy graduation ceremony at Madison Square Garden, April 24, 2023, in New York.

Police sources told ABC News that Penny was not specifically being threatened by Neely when he intervened and that Neely had not become violent and had not been threatening anyone in particular.

Penny, a 24-year-old Marine veteran, was questioned by detectives and released, according to police. He reportedly told police he was not trying to kill Neely.

In a statement this week , attorneys for Penny offered "condolences to those close to Mr. Neely" and claimed, "Mr. Neely began aggressively threatening Daniel," and that the Marine veteran and others "acted to protect themselves."

"Mr. Neely had a documented history of violent and erratic behavior, the apparent result of ongoing and untreated mental illness," said the statement from the law firm of Raiser and Kenniff. "When Mr. Neely began aggressively threatening Daniel Penny and the other passengers, Daniel, with the help of others, acted to protect themselves, until help arrived. Daniel never intended to harm Mr. Neely and could not have foreseen his untimely death."

PHOTO: Jordan Neely is pictured before going to see the Michael Jackson movie, 'This is It' outside the Regal Cinemas on 8th Ave. and 42nd St. in Times Square, New York, in 2009.

The Neely family attorneys criticized the statement, calling it a "character assassination" of Neely, while calling for charges in the case.

"The truth is, he knew nothing about Jordan's history when he intentionally wrapped his arms around Jordan's neck, and squeezed and kept squeezing," said the Neely family attorneys.

"Daniel Penny's press release is not an apology nor an expression of regret. It is a character assassination, and a clear example of why he believed he was entitled to take Jordan's life," the statement from attorneys Donte Mills and Lennon Edwards continued.

Neely's family also called on the mayor to give them a call, saying, "The family wants you to know that Jordan matters."

Protesters have called for justice following the deadly incident. Over the weekend, protesters filled subway stations, some jumping on the tracks, while pressing for more action. Several protesters have been arrested in recent days during demonstrations.

Evacuations are under way in the town of Vovchansk, in the northeast Kharkiv region.

Local officials fear that Vovchansk's fate may mirror that of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, Ukrainian cities where fierce fighting forced Ukrainian withdrawals.

The Kremlin's forces are aiming to exploit Ukrainian weaknesses before a big batch of new military aid for Kyiv from the US and European partners arrives on the battlefield, according to analysts.

Six children have been rescued from the Russian-occupied Kherson region, the area's governor Oleksandr Prokudin has said.

Mr Prokudin said on Telegram the children - one girl and five boys - were "rescued from the camps of the Russian occupiers".

The Save Ukraine organisation worked on the rescue mission, he said.

"It was an extremely difficult rescue mission with delays at roadblocks and intimidation," the governor said.

"Fortunately, all the children are safe now. Doctors and psychologists work with them."

The children were aged between five and 12.

The UN has issued a statement on the ongoing situation in the northeast Kharkiv region.

In a statement, the office of the UN high commissioner for human rights said it was "deeply concerned at the plight of civilians in Ukraine, particularly in the Kharkiv region" as Russian forces step up attacks.

"This assault has seized more Ukrainian territory, triggered further displacement and potentially threatens Kharkiv," the statement reads.

Data from the UN shows that since the latest incursion by Russian forces on 10 May at least 6,000 people are believed to have fled or been evacuated from areas on the border and many have reached the city of Kharkiv.

At least eight civilians have been killed and 35 injured in the Kharkiv region since last Friday.

"In the Kharkiv region, the situation is dire, as fighting intensifies," the UN office said.

"Colleagues in Kharkiv report air raid sirens sounding almost constantly and hearing explosions in the border area and in the city itself.

"Reports indicate that in the northeastern border city of Vovchansk, where there has been significant destruction, heavy fighting is continuing.

"Several hundred civilian residents out of a population of some 3,000 prior to 10 May are believed to still be there."

The head of Ukraine's military intelligence agency has said the situation in the Kharkiv region is moving towards stabilisation but that Russia may send in more reserves in the coming days.

Russia's military had also stationed small assault units near Ukraine's northern Sumy region, GUR agency chief Kyrylo Budanov told Ukrainian TV.

Earlier, the TASS news agency reported the western and northern parts of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkhiv region were now under Russian control (see post at 9.21am).

Ukraine's military said the situation in the town was under control but it had to withdraw to new positions near the village of Lukyantsi.

Vladimir Putin's appointment of Nikolai Patrushev as his aide, which forms part of his cabinet reshuffle, appears to be a demotion, our  international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn   says.

Waghorn says Patrushev, who was moved from his role of secretary on the security council to make way for Sergei Shoigu, is a "colourful and rather sinister character".

"He is the ideas man behind the direction Vladimir Putin has taken his country in," he says.

"He seems to believe in any conspiracy theory that is going. He can buy into paranoia about the way the world is treating Russia, with delusions of grandeur about the restoration of the Russian empire.

"He's put a lot of thoughts and ideas into Putin's head over the years."

Waghorn says Western observers "will be relieved" he's been taken away from that position and it "looks as though he's been put into a position where he has been demoted to an adviser role".

"He's still  in a position where he can influence Putin but he won't have control over intelligence gathering," he adds.

"The apparent demotion will be encouraging to observers in the West."

But Waghorn also notes that it looks as though Mr Putin "is getting his act together".

"Bringing about a reshuffle might give him a bit more reality with the way in which he views the world - that may or may not be a good thing," he adds.

The western and northern parts of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkhiv region have fallen under the control of Russian forces, the TASS state news agency reports.

Ukraine's military has said the situation in the town of Vovchansk is under control but it had to withdraw to new positions near the village of Lukyantsi due to heavy Russian air strikes.

Street fighting is ongoing in the town, TASS reports.

The embattled town of Vovchansk, in northeast Ukraine, is where Kyiv's troops are locked in intense battles with the Russian army.

The town, whose pre-war population of 17,000 had dwindled to just 2,500 before Russia renewed its ground assault last week, has emerged as a focus point for Russia.

A new US weapons package has already started arriving in Ukraine with more supplies on the way, Antony Blinken has said during a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv this morning.

"We also know that in the near term the assistance is now on the way, some of it has already arrived and more of it will be arriving," the US officials said.

"And that's going to make a real difference against the ongoing Russian aggression on the battlefield."

Mr Zelenskyy lauded the "crucial" US aid, stressing the country's biggest deficit - air defence.

He also told Mr Blinken that Ukraine needs two air defence batteries for the northeastern city of Kharkiv, being pummelled by Russian air strikes.

For context : Last month, the Senate passed $95bn (£76.2bn) in war aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan after months of delays and rows.

The House approved the package in a series of four votes, with the Ukraine portion passing 311-112.

A total of $61bn (£48.1bn) in aid is for Ukraine.

The bill will see a new delivery of weapons to Ukraine, which has been struggling to hold its front lines against Russia.

A criminal case has been opened against a top general at Russia's ministry of defence, the Kremlin has said.

A statement by the Investigative Committee of Russia said a case had been opened against Yuri Kuznetsov, who was in charge of personnel issues at the ministry.

The committee said he was suspected of "receiving a bribe on an especially large scale".

According to the investigation, in 2021-2023, Kuznetsov received a bribe from representatives of commercial structures for performing certain actions in their favour.

At least five people have been arrested in a widening bribery scandal centred on the defence ministry.

Vladimir Putin will visit China this week, TASS news agency reports, citing the Kremlin.

The Russian leader is set to visit Beijing and the northeast province of Harbin on 16 and 17 May, according to reports.

The trip is his first foreign trip since his inauguration for a new term as president.

He last visited China in October 2023.

The relationship between Mr Putin and China's Xi Jinping appears to have strengthened since the onset of the war and both China and Russia declared a "no limits" partnership in February 2022.

In 2023, Mr Xi spent three days with the Kremlin leader in Moscow and the two leaders have often touted their close personal friendship.

Russia has also become a reliable source of affordable energy for China. Its imports of Russian gas and oil leapt last year by more than 50%.

In return, Russia is buying more hi-tech and heavy industrial goods from China because it can no longer import them from the West.

Russia appears to be targeting Kharkiv right now, where the situation is "very tense", a Ukrainian MP has told Sky News.

Kira Rudik said the "risks are high" and Russia has gathered enough troops and resources to increase the lengths of its frontline.

She said Russian forces appeared to be targeting both the Kharkiv region and city and aerial bombing of the area had increased.

Asked if Ukraine should focus on defending the northeast region over the east, she said: "Russia's strategy right now is to disrupt our attention and to increase the front so we will have to chose what is more important to defend.

"But you cannot say some people are more important than the others.

"We will have to accumulate our forces and use the brilliance of our generals to stand against that."
