Tracking Passions of Bridgewater College National Champions
One thing all athletes have in common: passion. Passion for pushing one’s self beyond perceived limits; passion for learning new skills and developing strengths and mental toughness; passion for celebrating victories and bouncing back after losses. The track & field program at Bridgewater College features some legendary names, including longtime head coaches Doc Jopson and Shane Stevens. Student-athletes have also claimed their spots in the College annals of the sport, with five to date winning NCAA Division III national championships. Each one has seen how his or her athletic skills and strengths have benefited them at Bridgewater and beyond.
Isaac Rodgers III ’85 | 3D artist/software engineer
Indoor triple jump national champion
One of the biggest lessons Isaac Rodgers learned as a student-athlete at Bridgewater is something that carries over into both his personal and professional life: not only how to prepare for victory but also how to accept losses and learn from them.
“Being an athlete, you learn lessons that follow you through life,” he says. “You learn to accept the good and bad and keep moving forward.”
Rodgers, who was inducted into BC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, competed in a variety of events (sprints, triple jump and relays) as a member of the track team, which he says challenged him to get better day after day, year after year. He applied that same growth mentality to his art major and learned a variety of skills that have served him well in his profession.
Today, he works for Huntington Ingalls Industries in 3D development for military simulations and games, and he’s done everything from illustration to photography to video animation. He’s passionate about his work and says he’s found his niche.
“There’s always something new to learn and try, not just in artwork, but in life in general,” Rodgers says.
Courtney Hartman Williams ’10 | Farmer and youth athletics coach
Heptathlon national champion
As a child, Courtney Hartman Williams ’10 competed in a “neighborhood Olympics” with her older sisters and friends. At Bridgewater, Williams became the first BC athlete in team history to win a national championship in the heptathlon, which allowed her to pursue a wide range of interests in several events. She says sports cultivate hard work, discipline and confidence, especially in youth.
“Then and now I realize that achievement doesn’t just fall into your lap. You have to go get it,” says Williams, who was inducted into BC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022.
Today, Williams continues to pursue a wide range of passions, including raising beef cattle on 200 acres with her husband, Torrey, and coaching youth athletics. She says she loves being able to directly apply the knowledge and practical skills she gained at Bridgewater to the kids she coaches today.
“Bridgewater has given me so much, not just things I learned in the classroom but interacting with the community. One aspect I love about the school is they push volunteering and community involvement,” Williams says. “Bridgewater feels like home, and the community is unmatched.”
Amber Celen ’18 | Cruise director
Three-time national champion in the 60m and 200m indoor and 100m outdoor
Amber Celen fell in love with the cruise industry at age 7, when she went on her first cruise with her family and was invited to perform on stage. She’s been working toward her dream job ever since and says her current position as cruise director with Carnival Cruise Line Entertainment is the most rewarding experience. Her time as a student-athlete helped her with time management, teamwork, goalsetting and leadership, as well as giving her the courage to “dream big.”
More than 60 nationalities are represented on Celen’s cruise ship, and her double major in communication, technology and culture and sociology “allowed me to appreciate how truly amazing it is to be in an environment where so many cultures, languages and nationalities coexist and create such a unique and rich experience.”
“What makes me so passionate about this is that I get to meet so many people and play a part in making memories that will last a lifetime,” she says.
Davonta Womack ’20 | Sociology major
Outdoor 100m dash national champion
Davonta Womack ’20 remains one of the most prolific men’s track and field athletes in Bridgewater College and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) history. A two-sport collegiate athlete (he was a third-team All-ODAC cornerback on the football team), Womack found his lane in track and field.
In 2019, Womack took first in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships with a time of 10.20 seconds. His time was a new school and ODAC record and was the second-fastest mark in meet history under any conditions. It was also Womack’s fifth All-American honor.
He was on track to claim even further accolades at the March 2020 indoor national championships in both the 60-meter dash and the long jump after breaking Bridgewater and ODAC indoor championship records for both events that season. But his collegiate athletic career was cut short when the championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Adalia Coleman ‘24 | Health and exercise science major
Two-time indoor 60m dash national champion
Continuing athletics after high school was not part of Adalia Coleman’s original plan, but visiting Bridgewater and witnessing the tightknit community and decorated track & field team changed her mind. She captured her first national championship as a sophomore and defended her title again as a junior. She credits her coaches, especially Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Denver Davis, for being amazing mentors who have guided her on and off the track.
“The culture that he [Denver] has built and the values instilled in the program have not only impacted me as an athlete but as a growing young adult,” she says.
Coleman’s favorite part about track is that it’s a team sport, and that support is what keeps her working toward new goals and achievements. A health and exercise science major with a minor in biology, her plan after graduation is to work one-on-one with patients in a healthcare setting.
“Since coming to Bridgewater, a big thing that has changed for me is the confidence that I have been able to find within myself,” she says.

New Carnival Ship’s Female Leadership Duo
Sarah Bretz, Contributor
- August 28, 2018
Carnival Cruise Line has announced that for the first time, a female cruise director and entertainment director duo will bring out a new ship – Carnival Panorama.
British-born Emma Nixon will serve as cruise director, and Canadian native Brittany Boyd as entertainment director when the ship sets sail from Long Beach, California, next year.
The dynamic duo will lead all of the ship’s entertainment and activities, including deck parties; Hasbro, The Game Show, Lip Sync Battle, Punchliner Comedy Club performances; and new Playlist Productions shows created just for the new vessel.
Nixon is a six-year Carnival veteran who joined as a member of the Fun Squad and quickly moved up the ranks within the entertainment department before eventually being named Carnival Spirit ‘s cruise director in 2015.
Known for her infectious laugh and positive nature, Emma’s role as cruise director is to create a fun onboard environment and ensure guests go home with plenty of good memories.
Brittany Boyd
Boyd joined Carnival in 2011 as a Fun Squad Host and was named entertainment director in 2014.
As Panorama ‘s entertainment director, she will oversee the ship’s entertainment offerings, organizing and scheduling hundreds of activities and entertainment choices that will be available during the vessel’s week-long cruises.
“Emma and Brittany are both high-energy and engaging women who will do an absolutely fantastic job overseeing all of the exciting entertainment choices that will be featured aboard the spectacular Carnival Panorama,” said Sarah Reno, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line.
“Fun and laughter are part of our DNA, and these two incredible women are the ideal candidates to lead our amazing entertainment team on board.”
The women will join the nearly 1,400 team members who will travel to Italy to prepare the ship for its December 11, 2019, maiden voyage from the renovated Long Beach Cruise Terminal, home to three year-round Carnival ships.
Panorama is the third ship in the line’s Vista class, and will offer both indoor and outdoor dining experiences, the popular SkyRide attraction, a massive water park, ropes course, Family Harbor cabins, Havana cabins, and themed bar and pool, and the Cloud 9 Spa.
Following its inaugural three-day voyage on December 11, 2019, the ship will launch year-round seven-day cruises departing every Saturday to destinations along the Mexican Riviera. Sailings are currently open for reservations.

List of Carnival Cruise Directors by Ship for August and September 2023
by Prof. Cruise · August 2, 2023
One of the most common questions I receive and see asked on cruise boards and social media sites is: Who will my cruise director be? To which there are always several follow up questions asked by new cruisers to the effect of: What the heck is a cruise director? Well I’m here to answer both of those questions! First…
What does a Cruise Director do?
Besides not sleep, smile through exhaustion and frustration, and dish out almost as many corny jokes as yours truly? Quite a lot! In fact, cruise directors are the most visible crew members onboard a cruise ship and often work up to 16 hours per day with no days off during their contract period (usually lasting around 4 months, but up to 9 months in some cases). While passengers will see them constantly out and about introducing shows, MC’ing activities and events, and interacting with guests, they are also responsible for behind-the-scenes scheduling and coordination of all entertainment and activities and certain safety protocols.
Many regular Carnival cruisers have a favorite cruise director they look forward to sailing with. So, let’s get to our second question, who will the cruise director be on my Carnival cruise?
Who will the Cruise Director be on my upcoming Carnival Cruise?
Wondering who the cruise director will be on your upcoming Carnival cruise? Find the list of cruise directors by ship for the months of August and September 2023 here.
Important notes: * There is usually a week of overlap in the contracts of a current cruise director and their replacement. So, if you’re booked on the last sailing of a certain cruise director, you may actually see more of their replacement who is gearing up to take over. I’ve noted the exact “sign-off” and “sign-on” dates during August and September for each cruise director where there is overlap. ** While I try my best to keep this up-to-date, schedules sometimes change at the last minute, so I can’t guarantee this will always be 100% accurate. If you need 100% certainty as to who your cruise director will be, I recommend asking John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, via the “community” tab on his Facebook page a week or so before your sailing date. ***All photos courtesy of Carnival Cruise Line

This vivacious soul doesn’t just make public announcements; they are the life of the party! Beyond the glitz and glamour, the role is of paramount importance. The Carnival Cruise Director orchestrates the entire entertainment brigade, working in harmony with the hotel director and a plethora of entertainers. Their primary quest? Crafting moments that embed themselves in passengers’ memories. Ever experienced that ‘Oh, I know that voice!’ moment onboard? That’s because a cruise director’s essence is so impactful; they can significantly elevate the vacation experience. Believe it or not, having the right cruise director can transform an excellent cruise into an unforgettable one.
Every year, the Carnival Cruise Line unfurls its golden scroll, revealing the cruise director line-up for each ship in their grand fleet. This isn’t merely a list but a passport to entertainment excellence. Each entry announces the cruise director and their tenure on that ship.
However, a word of caution for all the eager planners out there: while this schedule is a beacon, it’s also fluid. Adjustments can and do happen. A unique aspect is the occasional overlap, where passengers might be treated to a duo of cruise directors. Imagine two maestros! But rest assured, one will always be at the helm.

Think of it less like a timetable and more like a treasure map. Instead of ‘X marks the spot’, it’s more ‘Who’s bringing the party tonight?’. This schedule decodes the maestros behind every laugh riot, dance-off, and evening extravaganza. It’s the unseen anchor that ensures smooth sailing in the world of entertainment. So, as you dive deeper into this nautical narrative, get ready to discover the stars steering your journey, one giggle, groove, and gala at a time.

John “The Brit With Wit” Heald : Oh, Johnny boy! No, he’s not the singer of a melodramatic song; he’s the legend with over three decades under his belt at Carnival. While he might have traded in his cruise director hat for the glittery tiara of a “Brand Ambassador”, his unmistakable British humor still reigns supreme.
If you’re cruising around on the ‘www’, hoping to spot John’s cruise director schedule, brace yourself for disappointment. But hey, the silver lining – he’s just one click away on his uproarious Facebook Page, where he’s practically the agony aunt for Carnival enthusiasts.
Leon “Mr. Electricity” Smith: 20 years and counting! Leon isn’t just a cruise director; he’s Carnival’s in-house energy drink. With a personality that could rival a bolt of lightning, he’s the human defibrillator ensuring no one’s fun levels flatline. Got cruise blues? Leon’s the man with the tunes!
Alex “The People’s Champ” Siegler : Roll out the red carpet because the ‘Favorite Cruise Director’ – as per several publications – is here. Alex doesn’t just cruise; he builds bridges (not literally) with every passenger, ensuring that every interaction is more memorable than the last. Connecting with him is like finding Wi-Fi in the middle of the ocean – rare and delightful!
Dustin “Mr. Party Starter” Gabriel: If enthusiasm were contagious, Dustin would be patient zero. Serving on a myriad of Carnival ships, he’s the flame that sets the party on fire and ensures it blazes all night. When Dustin’s onboard, even the ship’s anchor wishes it could dance!
Lee “Jester from Manchester” Mason: Now, here’s a fellow who can probably make a fish laugh underwater. Lee’s blend of humor ensures that there’s never a dull moment onboard. If keeping passengers entertained were an Olympic sport, Lee would be leaving with a trunk full of gold medals. Our director never misses to shoot a vlog or a chance to entertain.
Jake “The Cruise Maestro” Miller: Jake’s not just a name; it’s a brand in the Carnival universe. With accolades like ‘Favorite Cruise Director’ by several journals, Jake is the pied piper of fun, turning every cruise event into an electrifying concert. With Jake, every day is Mardi Gras!
So, the next time you’re on board, look out for these icons. They don’t just set the course; they are the course to unparalleled fun!
Does the carnival cruise director schedule change?
Certainly, various factors can lead to changes in the cruise director’s schedule at Carnival Cruise Line. These may include unforeseen circumstances, internal reshuffling, or personal commitments. While the cruise line aims for consistency in guest experience, adjustments are sometimes necessary. Once a contract ends, they usually take a break on land to recharge. The duration and cyclical nature of their work ensure they remain energetic and fresh for each stint.
