Terrified passengers on a Carnival cruise were left vomiting after a torrential storm pounded the ship in South Carolina — flooding the vessel and ripping doors off their hinges.

The Carnival Sunshine was returning to Charleston following a week-long trip in the Bahamas when it got caught in wild weather and rough seas over the Memorial Day weekend.

Videos shared online by vacationers show flooded hallways littered with glass and other debris, doors ripped off their hinges and downed pipes laying soaked on the floor.

The ship’s crew members were forced to evacuate their flooded quarters, according to a video shared on Twitter that shows the area in disarray.

Throughout the storm, several passengers also complained they were starting to feel sick due to the boat’s rough movements.

One traveler described being able to “smell people being sick walking down the halls,” the Daily Mail Reported .

Cruise-goer RJ Whited, who was celebrating his engagement to fiancé Tracy on the Carnival Sunshine, told WCIV that the ship was shaking “so violently.”

Passengers also complained that they didn’t hear from the ship’s captain or any crew members for hours during the chaos.

“They left us blind,” passenger Daniel Taylor told the outlet. “Not reassuring us about what was going on, where we were headed to, what the plan was. They could have updated us and let us know something.”

Another passenger, Christa Seifert-Alicea, said they didn’t receive word from the captain or crew for more than 12 hours.

“What we endured is indescribable, not only to feel it yourself but to hear and see it set in on every single person around you from adult, child and the elderly is something I will never forget,” Seifer-Alicea said.

Water damage and broken glass were left in the hallways and rooms following the storm.

A Carnival spokesperson said only a “small number” of passengers and crew members required “minor assistance.”

“Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. Guests on board the ship were safe. Our medical staff helped a small number of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance,” the cruise liner said in a statement to WCIV.

“The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival on Sunday and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests.”

The spokesperson added that the Carnival Sunshine is now sailing on a five-day Bahamas cruise and will return to Charleston on Thursday.

Carnival passengers recount ‘nightmare’ cruise as storm floods ship

Videos showed the carnival sunshine cabins and hallways flooding and ceilings leaking.

Matthew Branham and his fiancée, Madison Davis, were lying by a Carnival Sunshine pool on Friday aboard a cruise returning to Charleston, S.C., from the Bahamas when an announcement came over the loudspeaker. The captain was expecting rougher weather that evening, but there was nothing to worry about. So Branham and Davis didn’t worry.

As the day went on, “We noticed it started getting cooler in the afternoon — much, much cooler,” said Branham, 25, of Castlewood, Va. “And then it was like a switch was flipped, and it literally turned into a nightmare.”

En route back to Charleston Friday night into Saturday, the Carnival Sunshine navigated into a strong storm system that battered the southeast over the holiday weekend. Videos emerged on social media showing cabins and hallways flooding, shop floors littered with destroyed merchandise and leaking ceilings . Passenger Brad Morrell snapped a photo of an automated instrument map reporting a 69 knot, or 79 mph, wind.

Carnival said in a statement that the weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecast, but that its fleet operations center team, which relies on outside meteorology resources for itinerary planning, “coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location.”

“Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous,” the statement continued. “The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear.”

Strong Southeast storm slams Carolinas

Carnival said the captain made “several announcements about the weather and the delay it caused in returning to Charleston, asking guests to use extra precaution while walking around the ship.” Additionally, “some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made, but guests and crew were safe.”

The ship’s medical staff did help a “small number” of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance following the storm. Despite the significant damage and a delay in schedule, Carnival Sunshine embarked on its next five-day Bahama sailing on Saturday.

From their sea-view room, Branham and Davis watched as waves surged over their window and braced themselves as the 892-foot-long ship lurched in the storm.

“Waves were hitting the boat so hard that it was like an earthquake experience, jarring you like a really rough roller coaster — even in the middle floor,” Branham said.

They were told to stay in their cabins. Meanwhile, Branham said, TVs were falling off walls, and glassware was sliding off shelves and shattering on the floor. “You could not stand up in your room,” he said. “You could be thrown from the bed.”

They packed up their belongings when their floor started to flood and took shelter in a main lobby area.

“All of the employees were sprinting downstairs with life vests,” Branham said. “There were little kids besides us screaming and crying and throwing fits.”

Throughout the storm, Branham wondered why there weren’t more announcements from Carnival staff. Besides the warning of rougher seas earlier Friday and one Saturday morning after they’d weathered the storm, Branham said they weren’t given any official updates on their situation. When he asked workers what was going on, they told him not to worry.

“But you see rooms flooded, and you can pick up a handful of sand and you’re kind of like, ‘What in the world? Why is nobody telling us anything?’” Branham said.

Jim Walker, a maritime lawyer and cruise industry legal expert, says his firm has been contacted by some Carnival Sunshine passengers who were injured during the storm, including a man who says he was struck by a door and broke his foot. Others have asked him about the potential for a class-action lawsuit.

While Walker said passengers should make their complaints known to Carnival, he doesn’t believe filing a lawsuit would be an efficient next step. Instead, impacted passengers can ask Carnival for a refund or a credit for another cruise, although there’s no guarantee the cruise line will grant such requests.

Pete Peterson, owner of Storybook Cruises , which is affiliated with Cruise Planners, said cruise ships keep a close eye on weather developments and will adjust their itinerary depending on the severity of the storm.

“Cruise lines monitor the weather all the time. They’re not going to put their passengers in harm’s way,” said Peterson, who has been a cruise adviser for more than 20 years and has sailed on nearly 60 cruises. “Obviously, some cruise lines are better at doing this than others.”

In 2016, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas returned to port after cruising into a “bomb cyclone,” which damaged the ship amid winds gusting to 100 mph. The ship sailed into the remnants of Hurricane Hermine seven months later, causing additional problems.

To ensure the safety and comfort of its passengers, a cruise ship can alter its course and circumvent the rough weather system. In stormy conditions, the crew can deploy the stabilizers, which will prevent the ship from rolling and bucking.

“You don’t experience the up and down,” Peterson said. “It’s not as rough a ride.”

Both approaches can add to a cruise line’s expenditures, Peterson said. Stabilizers slow the vessel, thereby consuming more fuel. Sailing around the storm can take longer than the original route and disrupt the company’s cruise schedule, leading to delays or cancellations. The cruise line may have to reimburse passengers or provide them with future credits because of the inconvenience.

“When they do something like that, it’s going to cost them money,” Peterson said.

Craig Setzer , a meteorologist and hurricane preparedness specialist, said that even with the hurricane-like conditions and flooding, “I would never be in doubt of the vessel’s integrity,” he said. “Cruise ships are structurally very, very sound and can survive a lot. They’re really rugged.”

Carnival cruise ship battered by waves in storm off Charleston

A storm off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, battered a Carnival cruise ship for hours late Friday night before it docked, leaving passengers terrified.

Passengers aboard the Carnival Sunshine described shattered glass, water pouring into rooms and hallways, the ship pitching about and a lack of communication from cruise staff. Some passengers and crew members needed "minor assistance" from medical staff, a Carnival cruise spokesman told CBS News. "Guests on board the ship were safe," the spokesman added. 

Carnival Sunshine, which was headed from the Bahamas to South Carolina, arrived in Charleston behind schedule, according to the spokesman. Some crew cabins needed to be temporarily taken out of service because of water damage. The ship's next voyage, on which it has since embarked, was also delayed.

The National Hurricane Center on Friday warned of a non-tropical area of low pressure off Florida that was set to move northward and inland over the Carolinas during the weekend. Forecasters said there would be gusty winds, dangerous surf and rip current conditions along portions of the U.S.'s southeastern coast through Sunday.

Passenger Sharon Tutrone, a professor at Coastal Carolina University, tweeted Friday that the ship was rocking. She said that the only time passengers heard from the captain was in the afternoon, when he told them he had an experienced crew and would do everything he could to minimize discomfort as the ship encountered the storm. 

"They said it will get worse as we get closer to the storm," she tweeted. "@CarnivalCruise  is doing an EXCELLENT job!"

She tweeted again on Saturday afternoon, describing " 14 hours of high winds, rain and massive waves ." 

"We were surrounded by lightning and the ship took a huge hit by a wave and sounded like it split in two," Tutrone tweeted.

Several passengers, including Brenda Goodwin Sherbert, posted on social media about broken glass on the ship . They also wrote about water coming in through balcony doors.

"We had a 40 foot wave hit our side of the ship,.. we almost fell out the bed.. things were crashing all around us and the carpet on my side of the bed was soaked bc water came in thru our balcony door," Goodwin Sherbert wrote.

Passenger Reid Overcash, who was on the cruise with his wife, said televisions on the ship displayed a message during the storm: "Public address announcement please standby." 

He said it was when winds had reached between 70-90 mph and the ship was tilting left that he truly feared for his life.

"Myself being in emergency services and retired, I knew nobody was going to come and rescue us with winds over 40 knots," Overcash said.

The trip marked Overcash's seventh cruise. He said he's not going to let the frightening experience stop him from going on more cruises in the future. 

"It's just one of them unlucky experiences that occurs once in a while," he said.

The bad weather the formed in the Atlantic this weekend gave crew and passengers on board Carnival Sunshine a rough ride Saturday. Videos showed flooding on the lower decks and tumultuous seas rocking the ship before it was able to get into its home port of Charleston, S.C.

“Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday,” the cruise line said in an emailed statement Monday. “The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests. Carnival Sunshine is now sailing on its next cruise.”

The high seas were associated with a non-tropical low mixed with a storm front that had been sitting on Florida all week that the National Hurricane Center had been keeping tabs on, noting a small chance it could form into a tropical or subtropical depression.

As the system moved up toward the Carolina coast, gale and high seas warnings were issued from Florida up to Virginia, and Carnival Sunshine endured some of those effects as it waited to get into port. Weather reports showed winds in the area of up to 75 mph.

Videos on social media showed some of the damage. One post from the Twitter account @CrewCenter, associated with website Crew-Center.com, which is run by former ship crew, showed “the aftermath aboard Carnival Sunshine after a severe storm. The crew from Deck 0-4 evacuated to the theater, and anywhere they could rest… the crew bar destroyed.”

The website report stated there were no injuries, but passenger space on Deck 2 also experienced flooded hallways and staterooms.

Passengers in public spaces reported bottles flying off shelves as the waves of more than 12 feet rocked the ship.

A Twitter post from @FlyersCaptain said “We were in the piano bar right before when 30+ bottles of liquor jumped off of the bar and broke. We were told to leave the piano bar as there was liquor running across the floor.”

After a major makeover, the cruise line renamed what was the Carnival Destiny to Carnival Sunshine in 2013. It has a passenger capacity of 3,002 based on double occupancy.

The ship sails year-round on a variety of itineraries from Charleston.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV/CNN/CNN Newsource) - After weathering treacherous conditions at sea, Carnival cruisers spoke to reporters to recount horrific conditions experienced aboard the ship.

Carnival's ship "Sunshine" pulled into South Carolina on Sunday, and disappointed passengers shared their stories. For one couple, the start of their engagement and first cruise was described as a nightmare.

"She got really sick and was at sea all day, but we basically stayed in the room because she couldn't do anything," said RJ Whited, a passenger on the Carnival cruise.

After passing out three times and catching a fever, they were advised to quarantine. His fiancée started to feel better, but then the ship got caught in the storm.

"And it was shaking us so violently we couldn't do anything. We couldn't eat at any restaurants," Whited said.

Carnival cruisers said they were confused after several hours of no communication from crew members.

"They left us blind, not reassuring us, what was going on, where we were headed to, what the plan was, they could've updated us and let us know something," said Daniel Taylor, another passenger on the cruise.

Waterlogged items and broken glass were left strewn throughout the passageways.

In a statement, Carnival responded to the incident.

Guests on board the ship were safe. Our medical staff helped a small number of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance. The weather's prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship's arrival on Sunday and as a result, the next voyage's embarkation was also delayed.

The couple says even after they got off the ship they still felt like they were on water. As a result, they're not interested in booking another cruise.

"A fun celebration, we had no relaxation, nothing at all," Whited told reporters.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Many people vacation during the holidays, but bad weather conditions can drastically change the experience.

That's what happened to some onboard Carnival Sunshine in Charleston this week.

Several people who cruised on the ship shared on Facebook photos and videos of "horrific" conditions they endured on what was supposed to be a peaceful holiday vacation.

For one couple, the start of their engagement and first-ever cruise was described as a nightmare.

RJ Whited’s new fiancé, Tracy, got very sick and they had to stay in their room at the start of the cruise.

After Tracy passed out three times and caught a fever, they were advised to quarantine.

She started feeling better but then the ship got caught in a storm on its way back to Charleston.

“It was shaking us so violently,” Whited said.

Carnival cruisers said they were confused after several hours of no communication from crew members.

Passenger Christa Seifert-alicea said they didn't receive communication for over 12 hours. To be in the middle of the ocean, in the middle of the night, with no information was the worst part, she said.

"What we endured is indescribable, not only to feel it yourself but to hear and see it set in on every single person around you from adult, child and the elderly is something I will never forget," she said.

Another passenger, Daniel Taylor, said the crew left them blindsided.

Norwegian Cruise Ship Loses Navigation Ability in North Sea During Storm

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) -The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud suffered a power outage after a rogue wave shattered windows on the bridge while it sailed in the North Sea, causing the vessel to lose its ability to navigate, Danish authorities and the ship's owner said on Thursday.

The 266 passengers and 131 crew members were safe, according to the Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

"There is no power on the ship. The main engine is functioning but the navigation systems and radars are not," a spokesperson for the centre, which is responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations, said.

While sailing roughly 200 kilometres (120 miles) off Denmark's west coast and roughly 330 kilometres off Britain's east coast, strong winds blasted windows on the bridge of the vessel, allowing water to enter and resulting in a power failure on the bridge, the centre said.

The ship, which belongs to cruise company HX, a unit of Norway's Hurtigruten Group, left Floroe in Norway on Thursday and was due to arrive in Tilbury in the UK on Friday.

"Earlier this afternoon, December 21, MS Maud reported a temporary loss of power after encountering a rogue wave," Hurtigruten said in an emailed statement.

"At this time, the ship has confirmed that no serious passenger or crew injuries have been sustained as a result of the incident and the condition of the ship remains stable," it said.

A towage vessel from the civil rescue company Esvagt was scheduled to arrive at the ship around 2230 GMT.

The ship is currently being steered manually from the engine room but cannot navigate. Esvagt support vessels had arrived to help the ship navigate until the ship could be towed to port.

"I don't think there is any danger to the ship now. If the captain thought so, he would have asked to be evacuated which he hasn't," the rescue centre spokesperson said.

The area was hit by a storm late on Thursday with hurricane-force gusts blowing from the northwest that were forecast to continue on Friday, the Danish Meteorological Institute said.

Sailing through time

Before passengers began taking to the high seas, now-famous cruise lines principally operated as mail-shipping services. P&O, then the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company, won a contract to deliver mail to the Iberian Peninsula in 1837, a milestone event that would pave the way for commercial travel by ocean. The Black Ball Line, whose ships carried both passengers and mail, also became the first line to schedule a regular trans-Atlantic service. A Black Ball ship is pictured here in 1833.

1830s: the very beginnings

In the first half of the 19th century, most people crossed oceans for business rather than leisure – nevertheless, P&O is credited with launching the first pleasure cruises in this era. Boats bound for the Mediterranean struck out from England in 1844, with on-board passengers dreaming of sun, sand and sea. This decade also saw some of the biggest names in cruising sail onto the scene. The Cunard Line was founded in 1840, boasting an impressive fleet of steam-powered ships and whisking the likes of Charles Dickens to destinations such as Boston. Pictured here, in 1848, is Europa, one of Cunard's early Atlantic ships. The White Star Line, the operator of the famously ill-fated Titanic, was also founded in 1845.

Business and pleasure weren't the only reasons for taking to the waves, though – in the 1870s, European immigrants were traveling to America in great numbers. Lines like the Holland America Line, launched in 1873, became famous for transporting great waves of people searching for a new life in the New World. This fun advert for the company dates to 1898.

In the 1880s, now well-established names like Cunard and P&O continued to make waves. Launched in 1881, and pictured here in 1899, SS Servia was the first Cunard passenger ship to function with electric lighting. To many, she represents an early model of today's modern liners.

By the end of the 19th century, passenger cruise ships had become an exercise in luxury, with Cunard tipping its liners as "floating palaces". Offerings from competitors like P&O were just as lavish: this 1892 snap shows an opulent smoking room on P&O's Himalaya ship. Notice the plush booths, dark carved wood and intricate ceiling reliefs.

The period from the 1900s to the end of the 1930s is what many consider cruising’s golden age. By this point, the journey had become as important as the destination and passengers would don their finery to take to the seas for weeks on end. By the 1900s, passenger cruise services were nothing new. But the Prinzessin Victoria Luise (pictured) – a glamorous ship pioneered by the Hamburg America Line – is generally touted as the first purpose-built cruise ship. Launched in the summer of 1900, she was a grand ship with an ornately decorated bow and lavish interiors complete with luxurious first-class cabins. She came out of service in 1906 when she ran aground.

Many early 20th-century cruise ships had plenty of luxury amenities, but the entertainment on offer was a far cry from the glitzy shows and hi-tech attractions we're used to today. Just as cruising was enjoying its heyday, the industry entered troubled waters. The First World War halted progress in commercial cruising as attention was turned to the war effort. Many commercial liners were repurposed as military ships – Fred. Olsen, for example, purportedly lost 23 ships to the conflict. 1920s: cruising’s golden age continued

In the Roaring Twenties, onboard entertainment was still focused around fun deck games and sports. Here spectators look on in delight as a pair of women take part in a fencing duel aboard Cunard's Berengaria (formerly Hamburg America Line's Imperator). The shot was taken in 1923.

Huge dining rooms and bulging buffets are markers of the modern-day cruise and, in the 1920s, dinnertime was equally important. It was typically a grand affair requiring formal dress and involving course after course of fine food. The 1930s unfolded in much the same way as the decades previous, as the golden age of cruising continued: think deck games, dinners and dances. The king of all cruise-ship hobbies was shuffleboard, a game that's still often played on modern-day liners. Here, a couple enjoy a game on a cruise to Gibraltar on Cunard's Aquitania in 1932.

Today mammoth sun-bed-lined swimming pools – often with twirling water slides for kids – are a cruise-ship staple. But in the first half of the 20th century they were much humbler indeed. It's thought that the earliest cruise-ship swimming pool was installed in 1907, on the White Star Line's Adriatic, but they didn't become commonplace until later. By the 1960s, the Jet Age had well and truly taken hold, and fewer and fewer passengers were choosing to make trans-Atlantic journeys by boat. Still, though, that didn't stop some major players in the cruise world from launching. The decade saw the founding of brands including Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises. By the 1970s, lower costs meant that cruising had opened up to the masses. But the invention of the jumbo jet meant air travel had too, and the latter was the quicker, more convenient choice for traveling overseas. Therefore, the cruise reinvented itself. Ships were no longer marketed as a way to get from A to B, they were destinations in themselves, and the "leisure cruise" was its own phenomena. By the 1990s Disney was spreading a little magic at sea. Disney Magic, a bold ship with black, yellow and red detailing à la Mickey Mouse, made its maiden voyage in 1998. 2000s: making waves in the modern world

The 2000s saw larger-than-life, no-expense-spared, mega cruise ships sail onto the scene. Cruise ships continued to expand in the 2010s while cruising itself became the fastest-growing category in the leisure travel market. Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas (pictured here) launched in 2018 as the largest cruise ship in the world (until 2022). The tide began to turn on sustainability, with several cruise ships built to run on liquefied natural gas and battery power. Another health-based factor was reducing onboard smoking to selected areas only.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The aim of the 2018-2021 Strategy is to ensure that the UNDAC system is fit for purpose to contribute to saving lives and alleviating suffering of people affected by new and escalating emergencies by supporting on-site coordination, coordinated assessments, information management and situational analysis, in sudden onset and escalating emergencies. Through this, UNDAC contributes to OCHA’s Vision of a “World that come together to help crisis-affected people rapidly get the humanitarian assistance they need”. The Strategy presents a plan for optimizing the role of UNDAC, including the type of emergency support and services that it delivers on behalf of the humanitarian system. To meet its objectives, UNDAC will continue to work with Member States, Associated Members, Operational Partners, Resident / Humanitarian Coordinators (RC/HCs), Humanitarian Country Teams (HCTs) and Cluster Lead Agencies (CLAs) to prepare for and respond to new and escalating emergencies.

In 2018-2021 UNDAC will work toward its aim of contributing to saving lives and alleviating suffering of people affected by disasters through five Strategic Objectives:

I. Optimized UNDAC membership: UNDAC’s membership support, diversity and expertise is fully utilized to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

II. Strengthened, more predictable operational partnerships and associated member capacities: UNDAC leverages the significant support its partnerships and networks offer.

III. Updated methodology emphasizing a strengthened regional/localization approach: Increased focus on interoperability.

IV. Strengthened training and readiness: Updated training approach to maintain response capacity alongside increased emphasis on building capacities and supporting Governments and Regional Organizations.

V. Updated, streamlined UNDAC deployment processes: Efficient and effective management systems in place to deploy UNDAC teams anywhere in the world within 48 hours.

To meet these objectives UNDAC will prioritize the following services and support:

• Field coordination services based on the On-Site Operations Coordination Center (OSCOCC) methodology, including Information Management (IM), Assessment & Analysis, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and Civil-Military coordination (CMCoord);

• Coordination platforms to provide “docking stations” in disaster affected areas to facilitate the work of response partners and networks;

• Specialised emergency management advice and support services to Government authorities, regional response mechanisms, Resident / Humanitarian Coordinators and OCHA.

Nike is bringing back the Nike Cortez colorway from “Forrest Gump.”

Technically known as the the Nike Cortez “Varsity Red, White and Blue,” this colorway has been a staple for the model since it was first introduced in the early ’70s. It was thus accurate when chosen for its appearance in “Forrest Gump,” as Robbin Wright’s Jenny Curran gives the shoes to Tom Hanks’ namesake character before embarking on his cross-country run.

In March, a pair of Cortezes used in filming “Forrest Gump” and intentionally distressed by the costume department sold at auction for $57,000 .

Farrah Fawcett wore a similar version of the sneaker in “Charlie’s Angels” in 1977, which caused the sneaker to sell out across the country after the day after the episode aired and marked the Cortez’s first pop culture moment.

The Nike Cortez “Forrest Gump” will release May 8 through the Snkrs app. Pricing is set at $110.
