Why Cruise Indonesia?

Regally draped across the Equator like an ermine mantle, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, a majestic sprawl of some 17,500 paradisiacal islands home to all manner of endemic wildlife and natural wonders. Dramatic volcanic landscapes submerge into sapphire blue surf, crystalline seas home to graceful whale sharks and nomadic sea-gypsies, filled with vibrant coral reefs fostering marine habitats of untold biodiversity. This alluring archipelago, once the inspiration for Wallace’s theory of natural selection, is now a sublime playground for Indonesia cruise trips and increasingly popular private yacht charters .

Set sail on one of our luxury small ship cruises in Indonesia , from traditional Pinisi schooners to superior scuba diving liveaboards and even oceangoing super-yachts, and visit some of the planet’s most pristine, remote and beautiful areas. Visit breathtaking Bali and the pink sands of the Komodo National Park – the habitat of the legendary Komodo Dragon – or follow the historic trade winds en route to the famous Spice Islands . Discover the glittering jewels of the ‘ Coral Triangle ‘ – the islands of Wayag in Raja Ampat and resplendent birds-of-paradise of West Papua – or venture deep into the jungle-fringed rivers of Indonesian Borneo to glimpse orangutans in the wild aboard a traditional Kalimantan riverboat.

Our hand-picked portfolio of Indonesian boats has been carefully chosen to include remarkable expedition vessels operated by only the most trusted of partners, preeminent pioneers in the region who offer exceptional itineraries, unrivaled knowledge and utmost levels of service.

Luxury Cruises to Indonesia

With over 17,000 islands that cover nearly 750,000 square miles of land and sea, Indonesia is  one of the largest countries in the world. It’s also one of the most ancient and culturally rich places on earth, with a deep history of spice trading, European influence, and intertwining religious backgrounds.

On Indonesia cruises, you’ll uncover this country’s wild, elemental natural beauty, from volcanoes and jungles in Celukan Bawang to secluded surf spots in Lombok. Get your adrenaline going on a jet ski tour around the beaches of Benoa, or try fresh vegetable curries as you sip on cool coconut milk after a yoga class in Ubud. You’ll experience the best of Bali, Lombok, and their surrounding islands on a luxury cruise to Indonesia with Celebrity.

Indonesia Cruise Highlights

Blissful bali.

Cruises to Indonesia will bring you to the world-famous island of Bali, where a boho vibe, exciting cuisine, and unspoiled beaches await. Bask in the sun on the bright white sands of Gunung Payung Beach, or head to artsy Ubud for an afternoon of yoga or a traditional dance class to rejuvenate your spirits. Relax with a fresh acai bowl or tropical blended cocktail as you overlook the palm-fringed sands of Nusa Dua and soak in this magical island’s blissful energy before heading back to the ship.

Endless Natural Beauty

Indonesia is full of natural beauty, unique biospheres, and some of the most sought-after beaches on earth. On cruises to Indonesia you’ll have the opportunity to trek to volcanic crater lakes, ride scenic boats through mangroves, surf and snorkel at tucked away jungle beaches, and much more. From casual birdwatching to adrenaline-boosting ATV safari tours, you’ll find endless opportunities to explore the natural world on a cruise to Indonesia.

Cross-Cultural Experiences

Indonesia is a country of contrasts in every way, and one of the biggest highlights of visiting is experiencing an array of harmonious, intertwining local cultures. Each port has its own traditions when it comes to food, art, architecture, dialect, and religion. This diverse cultural blend allows you to immerse yourself in a world of temples, shrines, ancient healing practices, local art, and island cuisine. Discover new perspectives, make everlasting memories, and gain a fresh understanding of how harmonious and welcoming this diverse island culture can be.

Indonesia Cruise Ports

Celukan bawang.

Celukan Bawang lies on the northern coast of Bali, fringed by dense tropical jungles to the south and the beautiful Bali sea to the north. Here you’ll enjoy the quieter, less developed side of the island. Visit Segara Karang Rata, a coastal wildlife preserve that hugs the sea, or Lovina Beach, where you may spot dolphins. Journey out to a tropical plantation to try the famous Kopi Luwak, an unusual and prized coffee. Step into the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple, Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, and join a meditation class.

Lombok is the perfect compliment to Bali, just across a narrow strait but different in both culture and faith. While in Lombok, explore the village of Kuta, where you’ll find small restaurants with fantastic local seafood curries, an uncrowded beach, and nearby nature escapes that are easy to access by taxi or tuk-tuk. Thrill-seekers can trek on the slopes of the towering volcano, Mount Rinjani, or for a more relaxed experience, you could take a guided jeep tour around the blue-green caldera lake, Segara Anak.

The port of Benoa is the main southern gateway to Bali for cruise ships, and a short distance from the island’s principal city, Denpasar. Take a day trip to artsy Ubud for colorful café scenes, yoga, artisan gift shopping, and a deliciously healthy acai bowl to feed the soul. Enjoy thrilling water sports like kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing on Tanjung Benoa Beach. Visit the Pura Dalem Ning Lan Taman Beji temple site to reflect on the island’s intricate and harmonic blend of both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, where three majestic gates made of white-hued sandstone greet worshippers and visitors.

Here, you can discover artwork both from renowned local Balinese artists and notable European immigrants, as well as historical artifacts from the greater South Pacific region.

Traditional Seafood Satay and Rice in Bali, Indonesia

Local Cuisine

Hindu Bali is notable as the only island of an otherwise Muslim Indonesia. That means that pork is served, and Babi Guling — whole roasted pig, Balinese-style — is the traditional preparation. But other great eats aren't far away, either. Try satay, grilled meat skewered and served with an accompanying sauce: Seafood versions like prawns are popular here. Vegetarians can enjoy tofu dishes or sayur mesanten , veggies braised in coconut milk.

Benoa doesn't have a central shopping area, so you'll need to visit the gift shops of local hotels for the best souvenir shopping. Popular choices include Melia Bali and the Goodway Hotel, where you can buy colorful Batik fabric or traditional Balinese incense during your Bali cruise.

The Lay of the Land

At nearly 750,000 square miles, Indonesia is the world’s largest island country and the seventh largest by combined sea-and-land area.

Unless you have unlimited time, you simply cannot sail/see it all in one cruise itinerary. Thus, understanding the regions and knowing what you want out of your travel experience and ship are paramount.

Cruising Indonesia for Wildlife

While wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed, seeking out endemic creatures is half the fun. In Indonesia, you can set your sights on Komodo dragons, birds-of-paradise, whale sharks and manta rays, among other exciting animals, but there are geographical nuances to consider.

Komodo and Rinca Islands are the islands to visit if you are keen to see Komodo dragons. Snorkeling near Flores Island will offer you the best chance to see manta rays and sea turtles in deep currents, and some Raja Ampat routes hone in on the best chances to spot birds-of-paradise. Learn more in our guide to the regions below.

“Our Indonesia small ship cruises focus on activity, wildlife & exploring remote islands.”

Lesser Sunda Islands: Flores, Komodo & Bali Cruises

The most popular cruise itineraries are located in the Lesser Sunda Islands, perhaps due to the international airport on Bali and the island being a household name in travel thanks to its many established resorts. From west to east, the Lesser Sunda Islands comprise Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, Timor, the Alor archipelago, the Barat Daya Islands and the Tanimbar Islands, with the most common expedition cruise routes sailing regularly between Bali and Flores.

Each of these islands are different in their own right with myriad earthy highlights including volcanoes, rainforests, waterfalls, mangroves, white-sand beaches and even savannah. This diverse landscape also holds a variety of wildlife that includes Komodo dragons (Rinca & Komodo Islands) and manta rays in the deep channels that separate the Indian Ocean from the Pacific. Traditional lifestyles, quiet coastal villages, tribal rituals and intriguing ancestral traditions are also a major draw for travelers to the Lesser Sundas.

Raja Ampat Cruises

For travelers looking for an immersive experience into the natural world of Indonesia, a cruise through the archipelago of Raja Ampat is the ideal modality. Located right in the heart of the Coral Triangle, this biodiverse area contains 450 species of reef-building coral, 1,400 species of fish and intriguing endemic sea life—the stingless jellyfish of the brackish interior lakes being the perfect example.

This kaleidoscopic underworld is ideal for the avid diver or snorkeler and pairs nicely with the stunning karst islands and unique bird life, including striking birds-of-paradise. The island biogeography of these birds helped Alfred Russel Wallace formulate his theories of speciation, much like the finches of the Galapagos did for Charles Darwin.

Additionally, voyages in Raja Ampat offer adventures hiking, exploring caves and inner-island jungle walks to stunning waterfalls.

A small ship anchored in turquoise waters among several islands in Indonesia.

New Guinea Cruises (West Papua & Papua New Guinea)

While West Papua is technically the only territory of Indonesia, the island of New Guinea is often an itinerary stop or embarkation point for many Indonesia cruises. Many Raja Ampat cruises begin their journey in West Papua out of Sorong.

Like its neighbor Raja Ampat, New Guinea is a hotspot for birds-of-paradise, but even more so as all but two genera are found here. At their core though, trips to New Guinea are truly cultural, offering a look into a world that very few outsiders see.

West Papua and Papua New Guinea cruises highlight remote villages, traditional art and authentic rituals providing human connection with peoples that are living a very similar life to their grandparents, quite the feat for the twenty-first century. Papua New Guinea is also home to stimulating World War II history and is dotted with historic places of interest, monuments and tributes honoring the fallen. The colorful biodiversity of the underwater world delivers the perfect balance to days filled with culture and history.

Spice Islands Cruises

Indonesian Spice Islands cruises offer a unique historic experience and deep cultural interactions among beautiful islands. The Spice Islands were mapped on ancient trade routes long before the Europeans even began searching out the Islands’ nutmeg, cloves, mace and pepper. The Portuguese, the first Europeans to start trading spices on a large scale from the Spice Islands in 1598, cornered the market for almost 80 years, infusing the area with Portuguese culture.

The clashes between the varying nations and cultures in the region for centuries offers a fascinating historic journey that can capture any traveler’s imagination. Remnants of this highly utilized trade route are still seen today on Spice Island cruise itineraries that also can include snorkeling with whale sharks; exploring lush national parks; visits to traditional villages, colonial forts and palaces; and ideal snorkeling, diving and underwater adventures.

Sulawesi Cruises & Kalimantan (Borneo)

Sulawesi, the Indonesian island east of Kalimantan (Borneo) and west of Raja Ampat, is perhaps the most unknown gem of the country’s many islands. Its shorelines and atolls are freckled with human settlements that rarely see tourism, so this is a land of true adventure travel and modern cultural experiences. Villages here are authentic working/living places for a variety of locals who make their living farming and fishing. This includes the nomadic Bajau people, commonly called the sea gypsies.

The unique shape of the island into several long peninsulas offers coral reefs alongside varied coastal geography ranging from steep mountains to palm-lined beaches. The Togean Islands offer chances to swim with stingless jellyfish, and keen eyes should look for tarsiers and macaques. Sulawesi is also home to the Bugis, Indonesia’s famed shipbuilders, so your itinerary may include seeing giant wooden vessels being built on the beach.

If orangutans are on your bucket list, be sure to look for Sulawesi cruise itineraries that include stops in Borneo. Several of our trips include stops or pre-cruise trip extensions here.

A Note About the Wallace Line

Indonesia is famous for the Wallace Line, a faunal boundary separating two eco-zones (Asia and Wallacea, the transitional zone between Asia and Australia). The “line” was drawn by naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace in 1859 and runs between Borneo and Sulawesi down to the strait between Bali and Lombok. Traveling around this line is a thrill for naturalists as it’s one of the most distinctive biogeographic areas on Earth. West of the line you will find larger terrestrial mammals (tigers, elephants, orangutans), and east of the line look for marsupials, Australian cockatoos and birds-of-paradise. The Indonesian island of Sulawesi is an interesting exception to the Wallace Line with black macaques, pigs and tarsiers.

Java & Sumatra Cruises

Most itineraries explore Indonesia from points north and east of Bali. However, select itineraries will cruise along the western Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, linking up with Singapore. While Java is home to a majority of the Indonesian population, small ship cruises here will opt to mostly visit uninhabited offshore isles and small villages. In this region travelers can explore unspoiled coral reefs, deserted black- and white-sand beaches, lush jungle and child volcanoes of the famous Krakatoa.

The Places in Between: “Positioning” Indonesia Cruises

A fun way to see Indonesia is to “position,” or cruise with the boat as it sails between these iconic regions. These trips are often longer in length and include more days at sea (sailing vs. venturing off the ship) but connect you to the unseen places of Indonesia and allow you to relax with the rhythm of the ocean. Positioning cruises are also excellent choices to add on to a voyage. For example, a three-week positioning itinerary could be to sail south from Sulawesi to Flores, then stay on the ship all the way west to Bali!

Year-Round Indonesia Cruising

Indonesia cruises are available every month of the year, but ships often follow the trade winds and weather patterns to sail certain locations during their drier, less-windy months. If you are seeking to visit Raja Ampat, for example, plan your trip in the winter months (roughly, October through February). If your course is set on a Bali cruise, you can look for most sailings running from March through September. Climate data listed above is from Denpasar, Bali.

Small Ships & Yachts Sailing Indonesia

Numerous small ships of varying sizes and styles sail Indonesia, and our variety hold anywhere from 14 to 120 guests. You can certainly go the way of day boats to cruise Indonesia, but selecting a first-class, seaworthy and safe vessel is of the utmost importance among these far-flung island chains. Thus, we highly recommend going beyond the day-tour circuit to more remote reaches via expedition ships. In Indonesia, our partner vessels range from classic wooden Indonesian sailing vessels that lend an authentic, romantic cruise vibe to scuba-equipped luxury yachts and exploration-focused, state-of-the-art expedition vessels that travel farther, faster with all the latest gear. Knowing your preference for ship style, activities and amenities will help narrow down your cruise choices.

The 24-guest sailing vessel Ombak Putih combines traditional and modern design to bring authenticity and comfort to her itineraries in the Ring of Fire region stretching from Bali to the Philippines.

The 120-guest Coral Adventurer Australian expedition ship offers a wine cellar, open galley, private balconies and efficient ship-to-shore operations.

The Aqua Blu carries her 30 guests in high luxury, comfort and safety while sailing through Eastern Indonesia. Embrace history and luxury on this unique cruise ship.

Katharina is a 12-guest sailing vessel whose adventures explore the Ring of Fire, the string of volcanic islands that stretch out from Bali east to the Philippines.

What Travelers Say About Their Indonesia Cruise

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent.

The trip overall was unforgettable. One of the best parts was not having to figure out every step of the trip after/during planning a wedding. Knowing that AdventureSmith was in charge of the major details and 10 days of our trip, as well as internal flights were all organized was an important load-lifted off our shoulders.

Great guides together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

We went to untouched places that we didn't know existed in Indonesia. We were able to still see all the hot spots in Bali on our own before we took this cruise, but this offered something entirely different than any of our friends had ever experienced in Indonesia.

Overall trip was amazing. Absolutely no issues logistically. Unless you have months on your hands to stumble around foreign countries and really figure it out on your own, a quality specified travel agency like Adventuresmith is absolutely necessary for a trip of this caliber.

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. We most enjoyed Rinca to see Komodo dragons! The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

Meals Review

Great food and great crew!

Traveler Advice

Sea was a bit choppy the first couple of days, but not much you can do about that!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

They helped us organize all our flights.  Even reached out to check in on us when there was an airport closure due to volcanic activity.

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent. Also really enjoyed the trip to the active volcano and exploring the local shipbuilding village there. The trip to Rinca was short, I thought we could have been given the option to spend some more time there.

Accommodations Review

The ship was beautiful and kept in excellent shape by the crew. A memorable experience to sail on Katharina. My only complaint was that the sails were not able to be put up.

The chef on Katharina was INCREDIBLE. Loved the food and the variety. Rotation of meals over the week was also highly enjoyable.

Crew & Guides Review

Ari far exceeded our expectations. He knew so much about the local culture, the history of the area, the boat and the wildlife given his more than 20 years of experience. He also made sure that we had the best guides wherever we went. In addition, he was professional, friendly, approachable and organized.

We had excellent communication with our AdventureSmith contact Nick. He answered all of our questions in a timely fashion and we were well prepared for the trip.

We had an excellent trip aboard the Ombak Putih for our honeymoon. One of the best parts was not having to figure out every step of the trip after/during planning a wedding. Knowing that AdventureSmith was in charge of the major details and 10 days of our trip, as well as internal flights were all organized was an important load-lifted off our shoulders. The trip overall was unforgettable. Misool was beautiful- loved the jellyfish lake and cave exploration. The snorkeling, beach and view of Wayag was just idyllic and my favorite place of the trip. The oyster farm we visited was neat but the bay we stayed in wasn't the best- filled with plastic and felt less remote and beautiful with the oyster farm surrounding us. Loved getting to know the knowledgeable, like-minded travelers aboard. One of the best parts of the trip! This trip had a lot of snorkeling, which was great, but could have had a little more variety in activities. I know this was the action and adventure departure, but it was unclear that that just meant more snorkeling.

The Ombak Putih is a rad ship! We felt like we were pirates exploring the islands. I also feel that the traditional pinisi boats (as there were a few around) just fit right into the landscape, whereas the more yachty or modern boats seemed out of place.

Lots of variety. Loved the lemongrass flavorings. Could have more Indonesian foods, felt odd seeing a lot of red meat, cheese and smoked salmon when we can tell these items had to travel far to get there.

Great people. Fun to be around. Could fine tune their presentations and become stronger speakers for the evening presentations, but did a great job making everything run smoothly and keep us occupied.

Transportation Review

Our internal flights were arranged for us, as well as transfers to and from the ship which made our Indonesia domestic travel flawless.

The packing lists, online forms and the arrangements made were all excellent and timely. My friends and family would love to experience the magic of small ship travel that AdventureSmith offers.

If you get cold in the water bring a wet-suit top at least. The water is warm, but for us who tend to be cold just a little extra layer can make it so much more enjoyable. Also some people had long, thin rash-guard pants which were great protection against the annoying sea lice and jellyfish that we would encounter.

  • Ombak Putih

Great guide together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. The snorkeling was excellent; many fishes together with turtles, rays and manta rays. [We also enjoyed] seeing the Komodo dragons. The fellow travelers were a very nice diverse group who mixed well.

Cabins were small but quite adequate. Food was very good and the bar prices very reasonable.

The food was delicious and there was always a choice of fish, meat and non meat dishes.

Ari made the trip a great success. Very knowledgeable and experienced. Organized everything extremely well.

If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

What a trip and amazing ship! It was a special way to see Indonesia. We went to untouched places that we didn't know existed in Indonesia. Lots of snorkeling. Visited so many remote villages and had the children hold our hands as they took us around their town. We were able to still see all the hot spots in Bali on our own before we took this cruise, but this offered something entirely different than any of our friends had ever experienced in Indonesia and we feel like we really saw a "real" view of the country.

The Ombak Putih is a special ship. We were in awe of all the beautiful wooden touches - rare to find in the modern ships of today! Stairs are on the steeper side on the ship, so we made good use of the railings when at sea.

We ate like kings. Lots of healthy options, salads and fresh fish, but many treats and temptations to overeat too. A bit too many fried options for my taste, but others on board enjoyed and much was authentic to Indonesia - lots fried banana for snacks! 24/7 coffee and tea much appreciated and honor system tracking to grab your own drinks aboard and pay for at the end.

The crew was friendly and helpful, always with a smoothie ready when we came back on board in the heat of the day. We loved our guides Arie and Kees, who provided the perfect combination of education and adventure with their lectures and their snorkeling skills.

We would never have found this ship, or chosen this unique route, if it wasn't for AdventureSmith's advice and recommendation! Happy to have them as our sounding board for how to access the world's remote locations by small ship (we've done 3 trips). Their recommendations for us have always been spot on.

If you like to drink, take advantage of the opportunity to bring your own booze aboard to make your own cocktails! Bring a short wet suit or heavier rash guard top and tights as the water was on the cold side in certain locations.

  • Sailing Indonesia: The Undiscovered Frontier

Overall trip was amazing. Absolutely no issues logistically. We had a couple of days in Bali on our own prior to boarding the ship which made it easier to adapt to the weather, time change etc. SUP-ing into isolated islands with no one else around. Visiting remote villages that hadn’t seen any tourists since the last time our boat was there a year  ago. The genuine excitement of the kids wanting to show us around there village and home. The uniqueness of this trip was what really made the experience. It is a true adventure, there are no guarantees. Every day the group is coming up with plans based on weather, sea conditions, time frames, local advice and recommendations etc. You must be flexible and able to coordinate with the group, but this is what made it so fun. Of course the guides and the Captain had the final say. You could do this trip multiple times and never have the same experience (which some people on board had). There is a rough itinerary, but there are so many cool options and dynamic environment that it could easily change. Marine life, snorkeling, birds and komodo dragons. Truly Epic. Some people commented on a little too much time at sea. I enjoy boats and moving around but I would agree that it seemed a little hurried in 10-12 days to do the route we did. A few more days would allow for some flexibility and spending time at the more desirable locations, especially if we encountered inclement weather. [ AdventureSmith note that the itinerary was extended to 14 days in duration after this traveler's trip. ] We had a good group, however group dynamics on a small boat can play a role in activities. I personally would have liked a few more adventurous off boat excursions, however we did stay busy with fun activities daily.  No bad experiences.

The ship (Ombak Putih) was a beautiful, traditional, completely dialed Indonesian sailing vessel. The quarters below were not huge, but very clean, comfortable and as beautiful as the rest of the ship. Just the amount of hard work that went into this boat was breathtaking. We were lucky to have a small group (9), so there was plenty of deck space around to relax and not feel cramped. Even though this boat was equipped to sail if need be, we motored 99% of the time. We sailed 1 afternoon for fun, but there was no way we were going to cover the ground (almost 1000 miles) sailing the whole time.  Motor noise/exhaust was no issue at any time, night or day.

I couldn’t even think of anything I would change food wise. Amazing. Every stop we made, or local fisherman we saw, fresh fish and local goods were acquired. No food illness, water was processed on the boat etc. Beer was very reasonably priced. Cheaper than Mexico.

Unless you have months on your hands to stumble around foreign countries and really figure it out on your own, a quality specified travel agency like Adventuresmith is absolutely necessary for a trip of this caliber. Having firsthand knowledge of the ins and outs of small ship/remote world travel you’re in good hands. All connections and logistics where handled and everything operated smoothly. No problems.  Having spent so much of my life on the ocean, I love boats, marine life and accessing coastlines via a small boat or ship.  To me it really is the best way to travel. Whether you tie up in a large bustling port city, or anchor off a remote beach, it’s a whole different perspective than land travel. I look forward to another amazing boat trip with Adventuresmith in the future.

Ari was our main guide. He was exceptional. An Indonesian and Sulawesi local. Though we had people from all over the world on the boat, English was primarily spoken and Ari was absolutely fluent. No missed communications, or misunderstandings, he was 1 step ahead all the time, with the safety of the group the priority. There were times we didn’t swim, go ashore, or go to certain areas because the Captain and Ari deemed it unsafe, mostly due to ocean conditions. Spending most of my life around the ocean, I understood and respected what they were talking about. This was very comforting to know how attentive they were.  Due to our remoteness on this trip, there was no margin for error or injury.  This isolation became evident not long after we set out, and the crew operated accordingly.  There was no hot dogging or showing off, it was all business.  One instance in particular we were snorkeling around a deep water reef with a lot of current.  We had 2 zodiacs in the water tending to the swimmers.  A large, Rogue dive boat trying to track across the channel started to get swept toward us under full power.  Ari in the zodiac recognize this immediately, drove the zodiac in front of the dive boat and started screaming at the captain.  The boat turned, got swept down current and had to come up the long way to the anchorage.  Without his quick response the boat would have come very close to us.  I was watching it all unfold and would have swam out of the way, but I can’t say that for the rest of the snorkelers, focused on the sea turtles!  Kees was also another exceptional guide.  Having moved to Jakarta from Europe 20 years ago he knew the culture quite well.  His expertise in birding was an eye opener for me.  Most nights he put on informative presentations regarding the next day’s adventures.  Another very smart, professional guide we enjoyed very much.

THE CRUISE FOR THE CURIOUS

Indonesia has seen a positive growth of foreign tourist visit to Indonesia from year to year. Over the last three years, Indonesia has achieved its annual target for 2015, 2016 and 2017, comprising 10 million, 12 million and 15 million respectively.    While in 2018 and 2019, the government has set a target of 17 million and 20 million foreign tourist visits respectively.

One of the contributing factors to this growth is the increased cruise ships visits and traffics. Indonesia has been one of the favorite destinations for cruise ships, with Bali ranks number one on the most popular destinations within the country. Meanwhile, Indonesia ranks 7th on the most visited destinations by cruise ships.  In 2018, it is estimated 465 cruise visit calling Indonesia ports carrying 276,681 passengers. Compared to the previous year, this number has increased by around 31%.

Going forward, Indonesian Government strives to increase more growth on the number of cruise ships visits and traffics, targeting 500,000 passengers in 2019. For this reason, various efforts have been made by the government, in cooperation with those of governments and private sectors. Such efforts include improving port facilities and service, easing and simplifying sailing regulation for cruise ships as well as their crews and passengers. In addition, supports from other related stakeholders such as ground handling agent and travel operators, suppliers/vendors, as well as other partners are of important factors to the growth.

Known for forests, beaches, and volcanoes, the cruse port of Bali, Indonesia is a tourist favorite. This particular port is close to , so travelers have multiple choices when it comes to sightseeing and activities.

  • LAWS & REGULATIONS

In a bid to boosting cruise visits to Indonesia, the government has introduced a number of new regulations which simplify the process for the cruise ship to enter Indonesian waters and to dock in the country's ports.

One of the most signification regulations issued by the government is the cabotage regulation that permits foreign passenger ships to take visitors on journey within the country, stopping at major domestic ports, as part of effort to boost tourism.

Through a regulation No 121 of 2015, the Ministry of Transportation has designated (5) five Indonesian harbours, to be operational as transit port with turnaround capacity for foreign flag cruise vessels.

  • Port Belawan, Medan,
  • Port Tanjung Priok, Jakarta,
  • Port Tanjung Perak, Surabaya,
  • Port Soekarno – Hatta, Makassar
  • Port Benoa, Bali

This regulation permits foreign passenger ships to take visitors on journeys within the country, stopping at major domestic ports, as part of an effort to boost tourism. The regulation does require that stops at domestic ports by foreign cruise ships be part of longer trips that both begin and end outside of Indonesia’s territorial waters. It was also announced that at the major ports, ships carrying passengers would be given priority over those with cargo in being assigned berths

By general definition a turnaround port is a Port from which a cruise ship loads passengers and begins its itinerary, and to which it returns to disembark passengers upon conclusion of voyage. The turnaround operation in which a cruise ship itinerary starts and finishes, involving the full disembark of all previous cruise guests and embarking of new cruise guests, as well as changing of crew. For new cruise guests or crew, this can include transport from different locations to the port, such as airports, meet and greet service. It is also where the cruise ship's supplies are loaded for the cruise, which includes everything from fresh water to fuel and other supplies needed for the cruise.

In the past tourist travelling on a cruise to Indonesia must start & end their journey either from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong or Australia. With the release of this regulation, cruise operators may benefit operating taking in & out foreign and local passengers to travel inside and outside Indonesia territorial waters.

By virtue of the Minister of Finance Regulation No. 1914/KM.4/2018 issued on 18 August 2018 pertaining to Entry and Exit Ports Providing Customs Clearance for Temporary Import of Cruise Ships/Yachts, the Government has designated 93 entry and exit ports*) that can provide custom clearance for temporary import of Cruise Ships. Our experience cruising on the Katharina: Birds of Paradise, Whale Sharks and so much more!

There were so many highlights! For us seeing the birds of paradise and whale sharks up close were standouts, but the whole experience of learning about the history, biology and culture of that part of Indonesia will remain with us for the rest of our lives. In particular, learning more about Alfred Wallace (who co-authored the Theory of Evolution with Charles Darwin) and the Wallace Line while visiting the same areas that he did a century and half earlier was amazing.

  • 10 Exceptional

This was a fantastic cruise- can’t say enough good things about it.

Whale sharks!, birds of paradise, incredible vistas, snorkeling, food, attention of the crew

  • 8.0 Very good

Great snorkelling adventure trip.

Sailing experience; range of coral and fish: and camaraderie on the boat, including the crew.

Amazing and a must do....

Cruising with Katharina and the smaller boats, snorkeling esp. with the whalesharks, bird watching (bird of paradise), just three guests - plenty of space and private tours, crew with a wonderful Chef in the kitchen and Ari as a great tour guide with lots on useful contacts in and knowledge of the region and the culture, Katharina itself - what a beautiful ship, BBQ at the beach...and much more

Benoa cruise port

Region Australia - New Zealand - Pacific Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-04-29 10:19

Port Benoa cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Benoa, Bali Indonesia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Tanjung Benoa cruise port is the main port on Bali Island, Indonesia. It is located close to popular places like Nusa Dua, Sanur, Kuta, Denpasar.

Denpasar airport is only 12 km (7,5 mi) away from the cruise port and there are a lot of good hotels in the area. Bali is a great resort vacation destination with a huge variety of city tours and shore excursions. The cruise ship schedule offers attractive voyages. The most attractive cruises in the itinerary are during the Nyepi Day (the Silent Day corresponding to the New Year in Bali) in March.

In 2017 started construction works of Port Benoa's new cruise terminal (read more in the "terminal" section below). The decision for the port development project was based on the booming East Asia-Australia travel market, with over 3 million cruise ship tourists booked in 2017. Of those, due to lack of modern and big-capacity facilities, Indonesia received only ~200,000 foreign tourists.

With the new Benoa Cruise Terminal, Indonesia hopes to increase its cruise ship tourism capacity up to 0,5 million passengers by the year 2019. Apart from Port Benoa, Indonesia also started developing the Makassar ports Belawan , Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Perak, and Soekarno-Hatta.

In December 2017, Genting's new luxury brand Dream Cruises added the Indonesian ports Surabaya (Java) and Celukan Bawang (Bali) to the Genting Dream ship's regularly scheduled 7-night roundtrip Singapore itinerary program.

In March 2018, the state-owned port operator company Pelindo 3 contracted the Holland-based company Van Oord (specializing in dredging, marine engineering, offshore projects) to carry out dredging works in Port Benoa. By deepening the port's access channel and turning basin, port access will be improved, allowing bigger vessels to enter and berth safely. For the dredging works, Van Oord deployed a large cutter suction dredger (equipped with a rotating cutter head) to dredge a total of 5 million m3 of seabed material.

Benoa cruise terminal

Benoa Cruise Terminal (BCT) hosts passenger ships of all sizes. There is a good anchor holding in the sea bed. Among the cruise lines with ships docking at the main cruise ship terminal are Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, P&O Australia, Cunard, Costa. Legend of the Seas (Marella Discovery 2) was the first large vessel to dock at BCT.

  • Tanjung Benoa port is accessed by 2-miles long channel and has two berths.
  • The East Berth is the main one. In front of it, there is a modern cruise terminal building with a lot of facilities. Its length is 290 m the depth is -11 m 00 LWS.
  • Tanah Ampo International Port (just like Benoa Port) is located in the Bali Island's southern part. Another port is called Celukan Bawang Port - in the island's northern part.

The South Berth is an alternative one. It has a -7 m 00 LWS depth and it is 206 m long. At the Bali Cruise Port Terminal, the passengers can sense the authentic atmosphere because of the Balinese culture and art demonstrations. There are sculptures, paintings, batik paintings, and woodcarvings.

As a part of the Master Plan, the Bali Cruise Terminal is constantly upgraded.

(new) Benoa-Bali Cruise Ship Terminal

On August 1, 2017, Benoa Port Authority announced plans for building a new cruise terminal facility. Construction works started in September 2017, with scheduled completion in December 2018. The project was assigned to the state-owned port management company PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (aka Pelindo 3) specializing in port terminal operator services.

The new cruise port terminal has the capacity to handle even the world's largest passenger vessels (with capacity up to 5000 passengers plus 1500 crew). Apart from the new passenger terminal, there are plans for the development of Celukan Bawang Port (northern Bali). This project was scheduled for the period of December 2017 - March 2018. After its completion, the cruise port's capacity was increased to 7 cruise liners berthing simultaneously, each ship with capacity up to 1000 passengers. Celukan Bawang Port provides easy access for tourists-serving vehicles.

At the new Benoa-Bali terminal, cruise vessel docking fees were reduced by 50%. The Benoa Master Plan (port development project) also included dredging to max draft 12 m (40 ft) and enlarging the berth to 200 m (656 ft).

Bali is a large island and a famous Indonesian resort. This place is amazing with its sunny beaches, beautiful tropical forests, and volcanic mountains. It offers terraced rice fields and thousands of great temples. The Bali Cruise Terminal is located close to famous attractions and places for fun activities like water sport or haggling for bargains. Bali has survived two bombing accidents and has revived in an amazing place for a great vacation. The tour operators offer interesting activities like surfing, playing golf, workshops attending and watching Balinese dance performances in the evenings. Also, you can visit interesting places like:

  • Kuta Beach: Bali’s most developed and most popular beach. You can see a memorial to the 2002 bombing victims. There are a lot of surf shops, cafes (including Hard Rock Cafe) and several not so big shopping malls.
  • Ubud: Bali’s cultural center. Take a tour at museums and temples, you can also visit a monkey sanctuary.
  • Sanur: resort town near the beach.
  • Denpasar: Bali’s capital, the biggest city on the island. Good for shopping and temples’ tour.
  • Nusa Dua (Tanjung Benoa): resort area with a public beach located at Geger. The area is across the harbor from Bali Cruise Port.
  • Seminyak: located north from Kuta, a high-class resort with SPA and boutiques.

I spent $2,000 for 7 nights in a 179-square-foot room on one of the world's largest cruise ships. Take a look inside my cabin.

  • I booked a stateroom on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, one of the biggest cruise ships.
  • For $2,000 a week, the 179-square-foot cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and a view.
  • I thought I'd feel cramped in the room, but it had everything I needed and left no space unused.

Insider Today

In April 2022, I cruised on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . At the time, it was the largest cruise ship in the world , but the title has since been replaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas .

During my voyage, the ship sailed to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas .

For $2,000, I spent seven nights in an ocean-view stateroom on deck eight. The cruise was on sale, as it was originally priced at $3,000. Take a look inside the 179-square-foot space.

My room was a mid-tier cabin at the front of deck eight.

cruise line in indonesia

I booked a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms , which have no window. It's a category below staterooms with a balcony , and two steps below a suite.

My cabin was on the same deck as Central Park, an outdoor space with 20,000 plants.

cruise line in indonesia

I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship, so I enjoyed being close by.

When I stepped inside my stateroom, I was surprised at how big it felt.

cruise line in indonesia

Right away, I thought the cabin made great use of a small space.

To operate most of the electricity in the room, I had to insert my room key into a slot on the wall.

cruise line in indonesia

I appreciated the energy-saving system.

On one side of the room, I had a mirror and a desk with several outlets to charge electronics with USB, American, and European ports.

cruise line in indonesia

I thought the desk was useful for eating, as well as storing daily flyers about the day's events.

Next to the desk, a set of drawers included a cabinet with a minifridge inside.

cruise line in indonesia

The desk drawers were mostly empty aside from a hair dryer, which I didn't end up using.

Across from the desk, I had a couch positioned in between two closets.

cruise line in indonesia

Inside each closet, I found a rack of hangers, shelving, and a small safe. I thought it was plenty of space for a weeklong journey

Next to the couch and desk area, a small bathroom used clever storage hacks, like placing the trash can and toilet paper under the counter.

cruise line in indonesia

In the bathroom, there were two glasses, a bar of soap, and a two-in-one hair and body wash.

At the top of the shower, a pullout clothing line was useful for drying my bathing suits.

Each night, my stateroom attendant replenished towels and brought flyers and schedules for the next day.

cruise line in indonesia

Sometimes, the towels were folded creatively to look like animals.

I noticed that my king-size bed at the back of the room was actually two twin beds pushed together.

cruise line in indonesia

All Royal Caribbean cabins come with this configuration, according to its website , so they may be separated for additional guests. I often woke up in the crevice.

A large flat-screen TV was mounted across from the bed with storage hooks below.

cruise line in indonesia

Skinny nightstands on either side of the bed held lamps, charging ports, and a room phone on one side.

Because I booked an ocean-view room, I was able to look out over the front of the ship from a window above my bed.

cruise line in indonesia

The window was equipped with an electronic shade that could be opened during the day for grand views and closed when I was ready to sleep.

While I thought the room might have been a tight space for a couple with a lot of luggage or a family, it was just right for me.

cruise line in indonesia

And watching the sun rise over the Caribbean Sea from the comfort of my room was the best part.

The line had previously canceled visits to Labadee through the end of May. The stop was replaced with visits to other destinations or a day at sea.

The cancellations affect several Royal Caribbean ships, including Adventure of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, and Symphony of the Seas, the website reported.

Royal Caribbean announced in March it was suspending calls to the resort on the northern coast of Haiti after the U.S. State Department issued an alert advising people not to visit the country. Haiti is at a Level Four travel advisory, alongside countries such as Russia, Syria and Burkina Faso, due to issues with “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor healthcare infrastructure,” U.S. officials said.

Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic sharing the island to the east. The Dominican Republic is under a level 2 advisory with visitors urged to exercise increased caution.

Haugesund is one of Norway's most popular cruise destinations.

Located on the southwest coast of Norway, Haugesund is a historic town recognized as one of the country’s premier cruise ports. As a cruise port, it appeals as a gateway to exploring Norway's coastal landscapes and rich Viking heritage.

In 2023, the city welcomed 125 cruise ship visits, accommodating more than 370,000 passengers, thanks to its ability to handle some of the world’s largest vessels.

Among these, Iona , one of Britain’s largest ships with a capacity of 5,206 passengers, makes regular stops here as part of its P&O Cruises Norwegian fjords tour. European focused lines AIDA and Costa Cruises make occasional calls at Haugesund, as do Cunard and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.

Visitors can explore ancient monuments like the Haraldshaugen, stroll along the bustling waterfront, or venture into the surrounding countryside to discover serene trails and traditional farms.

Despite the rising number of visitors, there's no shortage of unique activities to explore on your own, away from the typical cruise line excursions.

The area is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a quiet picnic, absorbing the region’s historical significance at your own pace. On the way, be sure to stop by the statue of King Harald Fairhair, staring out to sea opposite the city park.

Røvær is a small group of picturesque islands, home to just over 100 people.

Ferry tickets cost just 70 Norwegian kroner ($6.50) each way. Just be sure to double check the ferry timetable with Kolumbus to make sure you can get back to Haugesund in good time.

Downtown Haugesund

If you find yourself wandering through downtown Haugesund with time to spare, make sure to visit Viking Planet . Here, Haugesund’s Viking Age history is brought to life through immersive virtual reality, 3D presentations, and other digital experiences.

Of course, there’s more to Haugesund’s history than just its Viking roots. Karmsund Folkemuseum reveals the stories of the city’s involvement with shipping, fishing, and agriculture, in the 1,000 years since the Viking Age.

Elsewhere in the city, Our Savior’s Church is a striking red-brick, new Gothic church with a notable tower and room for more than 1,000 people inside. The church is usually free to enter on cruise days, although donations are appreciated.

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel

cruise line in indonesia

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.

The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.
