Sightseeing:

At the heart of the Vegueta quarter sits the twin-towered Santa Ana Cathedral , the first artistic construction in the Canaries, which was executed following the orders of Catholic kings after Gran Canaria was conquered in 1478. The construction started around 1500 and was not completed until almost four centuries later, making the intervention of several architects and artists inevitable, the result of which can be seen in three basic architectonic styles: Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassic.

Another fun thing to see is to watch the "kinnetic" moving sculpture at the entrance of the Technology Museum which is only about 150 meters from where you are docked. No entrance fee required to see his sculpture.

The tourist office is at Calle León y Castillo 17

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Hop on/off buses are awaiting you close to the Terminal. As things slow down between noon and 3 pm this might be the best time to hop on.

Taxis : Just look for eggshell-white cars with a red stripe on each front door. Other signs that might help you recognize a taxi are the letters SP (meaning Servicio Público) and a green light on top or in the front windscreen (this green light indicates that the taxi is free).

A four hour taxi tour costs abour 100 Euro. The driver knows all the nice places.

Nearby Places:

Beach: north of the city (take a bus or taxi from Parque Santa Catalina) is the PLaya (=beach) de las Canteras, a 3 km stretch sand with lots of restaurants and a good local atmosphere.

Playa del Inglés, a 50 min ride by bus or taxi, has nice beaches too, besides the many high-rise hotels.

Arucas is the island's banana capital, west of Las Palmas into the mountains.

Shopping and Food

Besides the port is the El Muelle, a commercial center with large stores and boutiques.

Lots of shops are in the narrow streets on the other side of nearby Parque Santa Catalina, a square full of outdoor cafés. For tobacco and liquor this is the place to shop (The Canaries have a special duty-free status!)

The best places to eat are along Playa de las Canteras and Vegueta , the oldest part of the city, and in the Triana District.

El Corte Ingles an upscale Department store is more to the left from where you are docked. Just look for the "Casino" sign, it's right there.

7 Best Things To Do in Las Palmas Port | Gran Canaria Cruise Port

Las Palmas port, Gran Canaria cruise terminal

Welcome to Las Palmas port (Gran Canaria cruise port), the main port and capital city of Gran Canaria (aka Grand Canary Island), the third-largest island of the Canary Islands archipelago. Las Palmas is a bustling and vibrant city with lots of shopping and dining opportunities, a beautiful city beach, and a historic old town. It is one of the most popular stops on the Canary Islands cruise.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, shares the status of the capital city of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. In this article, I share with you:

  • Gran Canaria cruise port info (Las Palmas cruise port, getting around, helpful cruise tips)
  • Top 7 things to do in Gran Canaria cruise port and the best Gran Canaria shore excursions

Gran Canaria Cruise Port (Las Palmas Port)

The Port of Las Palmas (Puerto de Las Palmas; La Luz Port) is the largest port in the Canary Islands handling passenger and commercial traffic for centuries. Cruise ships dock at the Muelle de Santa Catalina cruise terminal, within a short distance from some of the main sights. Las Palmas cruise terminal has two berths dedicated to cruise vessels and can simultaneously accommodate two large cruise liners.

Although Las Palmas’ old town (Vegueta) and city center are located 8 km/5 miles (a 10-minute drive) south of the Las Palmas port, you’ll find the area around the cruise port very attractive and entertaining. The area around the port is flat and wheelchair accessible , including the shopping streets, the waterfront promenade, and the city beach.

Gran Canaria cruise port

Within Walking Distance from the Port

There are many things you can do around the port itself if you choose to stay in the vicinity of Las Palmas port.

  • Centro Comercial El Muelle – This large shopping mall is the first building you’ll spot on your right side upon exiting the cruise terminal area. It has several floors and features numerous clothing stores, perfumeries, shops, a supermarket and a food court on the top floor. Outside the mall, there is a nice outdoor coffee shop where you can enjoy local coffee with nice views of the ship. The prices in the mall are very reasonable, so if you plan to shop, make sure you check this place out.
  • Parque Maritimo Santa Catalina – A small scenic park with palms is located a few minutes’ walk from the shopping mall and adjacent to Plaza de Canarias square where Santa Catalina bus station (also known as El Intercambiador de Santa Catalina or Estación Santa Catalina) is located.
  • Santa Catalina Park (Parque de Santa Catalina) – Right across the street from Plaza de Canarias and the bus station, you’ll come across a large square and park with kids’ playgrounds, a tourist information center, street vendors, another bus station, and benches to sit and relax. The park is surrounded by hotels, the Elder Museum of Science and Technology , public buildings and dozens of streets packed with cafes, restaurants and shops. This is a lively area and I recommend exploring it, as it’s only a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal.
  • Elder Museum of Science and Technology – An interesting science museum with hands-on displays, a planetarium, and a 3D cinema.
  • Las Canteras Beach (Playa de Las Canteras) – Once you have crossed Santa Catalina Park and continued to walk straight, after a few minutes walk you’ll reach one of the busiest areas in town – Las Canteras beach with its lively waterfront promenade. The scenic promenade is lined with eateries, cafes and shops, and here you can cycle, walk, sit and relax on the benches, or go swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is popular for its soft, golden sand, snorkeling, and beautiful background made of volcanic hills. Sunbed and umbrella rentals are available in some parts of the beach.

Getting Around Las Palmas Port

  • The port area is flat, suitable for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users, and easy to navigate.
  • It is very easy to get around the island by public bus . Gran Canaria has an efficient public bus network and buses are well-maintained, air-conditioned and run frequently. They are operated by two companies: Global , which has blue buses and operates all over the island, and Guaguas Municipales , which has yellow buses and primarily operates in the city of Las Palmas and its suburbs. “Guaguas” in Spanish stands for “buses”. The nearest bus ticket sales office is at Santa Catalina Park and there is also an option to purchase the ticket from the driver (it’s usually more expensive in this case). One of the main bus stations for both intercity and local routes in Las Palmas is the Santa Catalina bus stop , located next to the port (aka El Intercambiador de Santa Catalina/Estación Santa Catalina). There are many bus routes and fares are cheap.
  • Taxis are available practically everywhere, they are white-colored and metered. They are very affordable compared to the rest of Europe and normally accept cards.
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Hop on Hop off bus tours are available and are a great way to explore the city and its surroundings. They include 11 stops at the city’s main districts and attractions including Santa Catalina Park, El Corte Inglés, Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Vegueta Old Town (with the iconic Las Palmas Cathedral), Playa de Las Canteras and others. The nearest Hop on Hop off bus station is at Muelle de Santa Catalina, right outside the cruise terminal. You can check the Las Palmas Hop on Hop off bus tour deals and offers on Viator and Get Your Guide .
  • The port of Las Palmas offers amazing and cheap shopping . Besides Centro Comercial El Muelle which is located next to the cruise terminal, you can also visit El Corte Inglés shopping mall, located a 15-minute walk south of the terminal.
  • The Canary Islands are part of Spain and thus the European Union, however, they enjoy special fiscal status and are within a VAT-free zone, which means that everything is cheaper compared to the rest of Europe. If you plan to shop for perfumes, watches and jewelry, you’ll find great deals here.
  • The currency in Spain is EURO (€). Local currency and credit cards are normally accepted, and there are ATMs and exchange currency around the town.
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Airport is located 27 km/17 miles (a 25-30 minute drive) south of Las Palmas port.
  • Book a private transfer to/from Las Palmas cruise port
  • Explore Las Palmas tours and activities
  • Check out rent-a-car deals

Vegueta is the old town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and is located 8 km/5 miles (a 10-minute drive) south of the Las Palmas port. Vegueta is centered around Santa Ana Cathedral, its main landmark, and you can explore it on foot as the majority of streets are completely pedestrianized. Due to its historical value, Vegueta has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These are the main attractions of Vegueta Old Town:

  • Santa Ana Cathedral –  Also known under the names Las Palmas Cathedral and Catedral de Canarias, the iconic cathedral is the most important religious building in the Canary Islands. A complete port guide to Las Palmas

Blessed with sun, sand and sea, the Canary Islands are holiday heaven. Gran Canaria’s colourful capital adds culture and cuisine, making a great day out for cruise guests.

The lively capital of Gran Canaria is Spanish through and through, but it’s also a dot in the ocean off the coast of North Africa. That means it offers an intriguing mix of cultures – not just European and African but Chinese and Indian too, thanks to the Canaries’ central position on ancient trading routes. Today the city is known for its duty-free shopping and sandy beaches, so it’s the perfect place for a port stop. But dig deeper and you’ll find a rich array of architectural styles to admire, and a vibrant culinary scene based on fabulously fresh seafood and traditional staples such as gofio (roasted flour) and papas arrugadas (new potatoes). Visit in February and you can enjoy the annual Las Palmas festival – a dazzling spectacle not unlike Rio carnival, featuring exotically dressed performers and colourful floats.

The city’s earliest settlement, this beautiful district should also be your first stop. Here you’ll find an old town full of picturesque, pedestrian-only streets and squares, built in a mixture of architectural styles dating from the 15th century onwards. And while you’re here, don’t miss the chance of a visit to the lively daily market and nearby Triana shopping area, which is full of great local clothes and gifts. -READ MORE: Saga offers Canary Islands Constellations cruise -

Las Canteras beach

A tip to sunny Las Palmas wouldn’t be complete without a bask on the beach – and with four on offer, you’ll be spoiled for choice. The most famous among them is Las Canteras, a two-mile stretch of sand with a unique coral barrier that shelters bathers from the waves. Above the beach there’s a fine promenade with some enticing restaurants and bars serving authentic local food and ice-cold beers.

Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno

If you love contemporary art, make a beeline for this airy modern gallery (CAAM to its friends). Hiding demurely behind two neoclassical facades in Vegueta, the gallery houses some great examples of modern Canarian and African art, as well as striking Spanish paintings and sculptures. The collection numbers some 2,600 pieces but the gallery is small enough not to be overwhelming. -READ MORE: Canary Islands and Morocco with MSC Armonia -

City Garden

A British enclave in the days when Britannia ruled the waves, the Ciudad Jardín district is a cool oasis of palm trees, foreign embassies and elegant homes for the more well-to-do locals. Visitors should head to the beautifully kept Holy Trinity church and the landscaped Parque Doramas, noted for its indigenous flower displays. On Sundays there’s usually a family-friendly outdoor show here, all for free.

Best restaurants & bars

With its white brickwork and industrial-chic decor, Picaro is one of the smartest contemporary restaurants in Las Palmas. It’s also known for its original cuisine, so expect unusual dishes such as Spanish vegetable curry and hot dogs with homemade chipotle ketchup. If you crave something a little more familiar, the crisp, creamy croquettes are excellent. -READ MORE: Princess Cruises announces new 12-night Canary Islands cruise -

Amigo Camilo

Seafood is a must-try when visiting Las Palmas, and Amigo Camilo is considered among the very best places to enjoy crisply battered octopus drenched in lemon, grilled squid, fried whitebait and juicy red prawns. Whatever is fresh and flavourful that day, you’ll find it on the menu here, ready to tuck into. In fact you can choose your fish from the selection on show and have it cooked to order.

La Tasca de Mawa

After a day splashing in the surf, join the locals for a sundowner at this hugely popular bar. Here you’ll find a vast choice of local beers, including the produce of the bar’s own microbrewery. They offer some impressively tasty snacks, too, including local seafood stew with fresh bread, tender octopus and succulent tortillas. It’s a lovely place where visitors are warmly welcomed. -READ MORE: Discover a medley of Canary Islands… and save up to a further £250 per person with World of Cruising -

Triana market

For something a bit more casual, this indoor food hall is a great place to grab a bite on the run. Inside you’ll find a lively bar and a range of stalls selling filled rolls, but the market is also known for its incredible array of local fruit, so don’t miss the chance to try delicious peaches and bananas. And if you’re staying for lunch, head to The Mojos And The Papas for tapas or El Sibarita for a cheese-and-ham platter and a glass of wine.

Trip planner

What to expect.

Gran Canaria is a popular destination, attracting sun worshippers to its abundant soft-sand beaches. Las Palmas is visited by many cruise ships, so there’s plenty to see and do for cruise passengers. -READ MORE: The Canary Islands… and all that jazz -

Las Palmas basks in year-round sunshine, with very mild winters. Temperatures are highest between July and September but many holidaymakers prefer to visit when it’s chilly and miserable at home.

Getting around

Beaches are walkable from the cruise port but if you have mobility issues or time is short you’ll find plenty of taxis to get you where you need to be. Alternatively, a smattering of Spanish will enable you to explore the local bus network. -READ MORE: M Marella Cruises: What is a fly cruise? -

Where to stay

There’s an abundance of hotels, with options for all budgets. History buffs could stay at the historic Hotel Madrid, where Spain’s General Franco finalised plans for the 1936 coup that brought him to power. Or, if you’re feeling flush, head to the five-star Santa Catalina hotel, once stayed in by Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie and Maria Callas, and still the choice of visiting royalty.

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria Port Guide

Las Palmas Cruise Port

The Santa Catalina cruise terminal in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria is a large, busy port with many cruise lines and ships regularly docking here. Read on for our top recommendations to things to see and do when visiting Las Palmas.

Las Palmas is a relatively large city and has around 380,000 inhabitants. It is the 9th biggest city in Spain and a 3rd of the island of Gran Canaria is under UNESCO protection. When stepping off the ship there is no real cruise terminal or facilities but you will be greeted with taxis, tourist information representatives and hop on hop off bus tours.

Las Palmas is a port where there is a lot that is easily reachable by foot and you don’t need shuttle buses to get you into the main town. Pretty much as soon as you step off the ship you are in the heart of the city centre and immersed in life here in Las Palmas.

Santa Ana Cathedral

For some history, culture and awesome panoramic views be sure to head to the Santa Ana Cathedral when visiting the old town of Las Palmas. This is a stunning cathedral which even has an elevator that you rise to the tip for panoramic views over the city – a great photo opportunity!

Located in the south wing of the Cathedral is the Diocese Museum of Sacred Art which is dedicated to religion and religious art. There’s plenty to see here with art dating back to the 15th century.

Entry to the cathedral costs €2.40 for adults and is free for children. It costs an additional €1.50 to use the lift to the top to enjoy those views – well worth it in our eyes.

City Sightseeing Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour

As with many ports, you will find the hop on hop of buses waiting for you close to the port terminal. Tickets cost approximately £20 and include audio commentary and free headphones and a map.

There are 11 stops on the tour taking you around Vegueta (the old town), Santa Ana Cathedral and Santa Catalina Park. As always with the city sightseeing buses, you can hop on and hop off as much or as little as you like and the total route takes about an hour depending on traffic.

We always really enjoy taking these buses as they give you a good overview of the city, the audio tells you all about the sights and they are a good means of transport too as you can get on and off at so many stops! They do get really busy during peak seasons and when ships dock though so prepare to queue and sit inside at times.

Playa de las Canteras

If you fancy a visit to the beach then a trip to Playa de las Canteras is recommended. This 3km sandy beach is a popular one with locals and tourists alike and has plenty of restaurants and places to grab a light lunch or something to drink. The prices aren’t too bad either!

The beach is easily walkable from the cruise port, just carry on past the El Muelle shopping centre and you will reach it! A treat for relaxing, people watching and listening to the waves – gosh I wish we were there right now! Apparently it’s a pretty good snorkelling spot too!

cruise port las palmas

El Muelle is the islands main shopping centre and has lots of large stores and smaller boutiques. The cruise dock is really close to El Muelle and so you won’t need to travel far to do a bit of retail therapy! There’s also a cinema here too and some places to eat as well.

We don’t tend to bother with shopping much when at home let alone when on holiday but I know for many visiting the Canary Islands there’s a chance to grab some bargains so I am sure El Muelle won’t disappoint!

Bandama Crater

Many cruise lines offer excursions to the Bandama Crater. This is the perfect place to witness amazing views over Gran Canaria and an ideal photo stop.

cruise port las palmas

Arehucas Rum Distillery

A little further from the port is the Arehucas Rum Distillery . A well as being an important factory on the island there is also a museum here. Visitors can take a guided tour around the distillery which details all about the process of distilling rum and offers guests the chance to try some tasters too – yum!

The distillery is open Tuesday to Friday 9am to 2pm and costs €4.20 to enter which I think is a bargain given the free tasters! It’s also free for children to enter although we don’t encourage they make the most of the tasters!!

cruise port las palmas

Christopher Colombus Museum

A place we would love to visit is the Colombus Museum. This is a house dedicated to famous explorer Christopher Colombus ad it apparently the house he stayed in whilst one of his ships was being repaired in the year 1492!

There is loads to see within the museum including many exhibitions, a study centre and a library too. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and on Sundays from 10am to 3pm. Entry costs €4 per person which is another decent entry price we think.

cruise port las palmas

Maspalomas Dunes

The sandy dunes of Maspalomas is about 60km south of the cruise port and are well worth a visit. This unique landscape is one not to be missed and is great for a hike. There are often also camel rides along the beach too if that’s your bag. Lots of cruise lines offer transfers and excursions that include a stop off here so do check those out if you are interested in visiting.

Shore Excursions and Tours

A really fun sounding excursion advertised on crusingexcursions.com is the ‘hidden gems of Gran Canaria’ tour. This is a 4-hour tour that leaves directly from the cruise port and visits a variety of places across the island. Places of interest include the Bandama Crater viewing point, the picturesque Canarian towns of Acucas and Teror, before finally the botanical gardens. Rates for this tour starts at €32 per adult which might rival some prices offered by cruise line excursions.

cruise port las palmas

Viator offers a bunch of tours in Gran Canaria offering something for pretty much everyone by the looks of their website! There’s a 40-minute camel riding tour around Maspalomas from €11 a person, a 2 and a half hour dolphin and marine wildlife boat tour from €32 per person and even a 2-hour off-road buggy driving adventure in the natural park of Fataga fro €54.99 per person. Be sure to check out the links for more information, up to date prices and times.

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain

Las Palmas is a large Spanish city, which just happens to be on the island of Gran Canaria. That fact adds the exotic, slightly African and international flavor to the place. It played an important part in the early exploration and exploitation of Africa and the New World, some of which is recounted in the Casa de Colon Museum. Columbus may have slept there, but it was never his house. It was actually the mansion of early governors. Other museums of note are the Museo Canaria with a number of Cro Magnon skulls, and the fascinating Elder Museum of Science and Technology. For shopping, strolling and general local interest, head to La Vegueta, the oldest quarter and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the adjacent Triana high street shopping district. Most visitors are here for the beaches, and the municipal Playa de Las Canteras is a long, clean and safe option if that is your intention. The Canaria in the name of the islands refers to the indigenous Presa Canaria breed of dogs, which are large, strong and made quite an impression on the earliest Spanish visitors.
