Port of Miami Cruises Delayed Due to Weather (Possibly 60,000 Passengers Impacted)

Sunrise in Miami

The Miami area has been hit by wild weather over this weekend with strong wind gusts and heavy rain. Official data counted about 1.2″ in the Miami area officially on Saturday, but wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour also hit the region. As well, tide levels reached moderate flood stage, causing havoc:

We’ve seen wind gusts as high as 56mph along parts of the South Florida coastline. The constant onshore wind is pushing us into moderate flood stage during times of high tide, about 2.2 feet higher than normal. #Miami #FLwx pic.twitter.com/oQZVVGjPTP — Brandon Orr (@BrandonOrrWPLG) December 17, 2023

As of Sunday morning, the port announced on its website and Twitter that due to the weather, “all PortMiami cruise ship boardings and departures will be delayed.”

The notice says cruise passengers should contact their cruise line for more details.

There will be a delay on Sunday, December 17th embarkation due to recent weather conditions. Please contact your cruise line for instructions and more information. pic.twitter.com/3POAPbDODc — PortMiami (@PortMiami) December 17, 2023

Given this delay is occurring on a weekend when more ships end their trips and begin new ones (known as “turnaround day), it has a significant impact on a large number of passengers. A check of ship-tracking site CruiseMapper.com shows Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas in port with MSC Divina, with Oceania Insignia and Norwegian Encore in the process of docking. Meanwhile, several other ships sit offshore, waiting their turn to come into port.

Typically ships arrive in port early in the morning, between 6-7 a.m. local time. As of 11 a.m. local time today, many ships had yet to dock.

All told, nine cruise ships are scheduled to be in port today before heading back out this evening:

  • Scarlet Lady (carries 2,770 passengers at double occupancy)
  • Oasis of the Seas (5,602 pax)
  • Grandeur of the Seas (1,992 pax)
  • Norwegian Encore (3,998 pax)
  • MSC Divina (3,078 pax)
  • Oceania Insignia (698 pax)
  • Carnival Horizon (3,960 pax)
  • Carnival Celebration (5,374 pax)
  • Vision of the Seas (2,050 pax)

Combined, these ships have a passenger capacity of roughly 30,000 at double occupancy . Considering that the passengers both debarking and embarking are impacted by the delay, that could mean roughly 60,000 passengers in total will be affected if the ships are sailing full.

This no doubt includes a number of passengers with flights home scheduled for later today that will likely have to be rescheduled.

If you have a cruise arriving or departing Miami today, then your cruise line should be in touch with instructions . No matter what, it’s important to pack some patience as an already busy day in port is set to be even busier.

Severe Weather Causes Major Cruise Disruptions, Miami Port Back Open

Picture of Doug Parker

  • December 17, 2023

Several cruise ships from various different lines had to face major itinerary changes in their itineraries due to severe weather conditions that impacted areas ranging from the Bahamas to South Florida. Ships impacted ranged from South Florida up to New York City.

Port Miami Closed for Hours

PortMiami closed to cruise traffic on Sunday, reopening early Sunday afternoon. The South Florida cruise port posted on X early Sunday : “There will be a delay on Sunday, December 17th embarkation due to recent weather conditions. Please contact your cruise line for instructions and more information.”

The embarkation of Miami-based cruise ships is scheduled to begin later on Sunday afternoon.

Sky Princess Alters Course

sky princess cruise ship exterior

The Sky Princess, a cruise ship operated by Princess Cruises, was originally set to sail a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas with a scheduled stop at Princess Cays on December 17.

However, due to rough sea conditions, the ship was forced to change its route. Captain Fotezze informed passengers that the ship would instead travel along the Old Bahama Channel towards San Juan, Puerto Rico. This decision was made in order to avoid the operation of water shuttles in unsafe conditions and to ensure a comfortable cruise for passengers. As a result, the planned visit to Princess Cays had to be skipped.

Carnival Freedom’s Cruise to Nowhere

carnival freedom 2023 funnel 1

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Freedom had to cancel all ports of call during a 4-night Bahamas cruise due to unfavorable weather. The ship was originally scheduled to visit Nassau and Princess Cays, with Freeport as a replacement port.

Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions, the ship was unable to make its scheduled stop in Freeport. As a result, the ship had to go on an unplanned cruise with no particular destination. To make up for the inconvenience caused to the passengers, each stateroom was provided with a $200 onboard credit, and a 50% future cruise credit was also offered.

MSC Meraviglia and Royal Caribbean Adjust Plans

MSC meraviglia in port miami

The MSC Meraviglia was supposed to sail from New York City to the south, but due to the stormy weather in Florida and the Bahamas, it changed its route to the north. The cruise ship made stops in Boston, Portland, and St. John in Canada.

Royal Caribbean International also made some changes to the itineraries of Allure of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas. Allure of the Seas took shelter between small islands to ensure guest comfort, while Mariner of the Seas modified its itinerary to Costa Maya, Mexico, instead of visiting the Bahamas as planned.

Holland America Line and Margaritavill e Adjust

MS NIEUW AMSTERDAM

The post-dry dock service of Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam had to be shortened by two days due to severe weather, which led to significant changes in its itinerary.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise canceled its December 15 sailing completely and advised guests to contact the cruise line for updates and rebooking options.

Weather continues to impact cruises

A powerful storm system, after causing record-breaking rainfall and disruption in Florida, is now moving northeast, bringing intense rain and thunderstorms to the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Meteorologist Brendan Schaper reported record-breaking daily rainfall in central Florida, with Orlando International Airport receiving over double its 1912 record.

The storm, expected to bring severe weather including potential tornadoes to North Carolina and eastern South Carolina, will advance northward to eastern Canada by Monday night.

The last time PortMiami was closed for a significant amount of time was in late June when a pleasure craft struck a ferry boat in the channel.

Best Time for a Cruise from Miami Florida

Best Time to Visit and Cruise from Miami

Miami Beach hotels

One of the top activities that guests like to take part is a Caribbean cruise from the Port of Miami , Florida.

However, most people find it challenging to decide on, which is the best month to visit Miami and go on a cruise.

While cruises stop at, start, and end in Miami all year round there are specific months in the year when cruises are more popular than others.

For the majority of the year Miami is full of sunshine and the weather is hot, so mainly there’s no bad time to visit. However some months are more hot, humid, and rainy while from June to the end of November it’s hurricane season in Florida.

The Best Time for Cruise out of Miami

Cruise ship sailing in Caribbean

In our opinion the best time for a cruise out of Miami would be from the end of February to Early May when you can experience Miami’s best weather. The period is marked by a lot of sunshine and the chance for rain is low.

Another perfect time is from early November to the start of December. The reason is that this is the least busy season and one of the cheapest of all seasons as well. While you can sail to Miami at any time of the year, the best time to cruise from Miami to the rest of the Caribbean is during the cold seasons of the Northern hemisphere.

At this time, it is warm in the Caribbean hence the best time for a cruise. Note that from December to April, most islands experience their driest seasons.

The cheapest time of the year to take a cruise from Miami and most affordable prices for hotels is during the late summer and the fall because most people are wary of the Hurricane season.

Note that, because of the hurricane season, if you decide to travel, it may be wise to purchase cruise insurance. You can always find other bargain sailings during the early weeks of December and sometimes in Spring.

In Spring, however, the negotiating seasons keep coming and going. Therefore, you ought to keep checking for offers and bargain prices.

In late June and July, the sailings experience a lot of crowds because of the school breaks. The same thing happens in late December to early January and March through mid-April.

When to avoid : When looking for a quiet and peaceful cruise vacation, you should be avoiding summer, spring break and Christmas time. Ships are often packed with loud, partying teenagers during spring break and kids in the summer months.

Christmas in general is a peak travel time. Another option is book a luxury cruise on a smaller ship with fewer people.

Ocean Drive in South Beach

We give you a month by month run down of the best time to travel to Miami Florida.

1. January is the coolest month of the year in Miami

At first, January is the beginning of the wave season, therefore the best time to shop for your cruise travel to the Caribbean. This is because the prices are pretty low at this time of the year.

Fewer people are cruising in the beginning of January. Since it is the time when kids go back to school after the Christmas break, ships take time to fill their berths as well. January can be a tad chilly for sailing out of Miami, but with temperatures in the mid-80s to low-70s in the Caribbean still a good month for a cruise.

Miami weather in January : January is the coolest month of the year in Miami. The tropical climate in Florida offers a dry winter season and pleasant weather to cruise and visit places. The daily high temperatures are at 70℉ (24℃) while the night lows are at a favorable 47℉ (16℃). Average temperature: 59℉ / 20℃. Average Precipitation: 2 in / 55 mm.

January in Miami

  • Can get cool & windy
  • Winter is the dry season in Miami
  • Events : South Beach Jazz Festival , Art Deco Weekend , Miami Marathon

2. February is a good time for cruising

February is the perfect time for a cruise, however since a lot of people look towards sailing at this time of the year, the prices are usually very competitive. This makes it challenging to find the best deals.

It is especially harder to get a good deal around President’s Day because people take advantage of the holiday to get away. Kids also get a break from school during the 3-day presidents weekend hence making it very crowded at this time.

Miami weather in February : The weather in February is similar to that of January, towards the end of the month the weather is relatively drier. The daily averages and seawater temperatures are at 70℉ (24℃) providing the best beach weather to be around the port of Miami. Average temperature: 61℉ / 21℃. Average Precipitation: 3 in / 60 mm.

February in Miami

  • Low to no humidity & little rain
  • Can be cool at night
  • Events: South Beach Food and Wine Festival , Miami International Boat Show , Coconut Grove Arts Festival

3. March witnesses an influx of visitors

In March, the weather in Miami starts to get warm as the Spring season is ushered in. It is arguably the best time of the year in terms of the weather. This means that the prices of cruises can be higher because many people are looking to take a cruise at this time of the year.

The fact that the spring break starts in March also means that several kids and teenagers are looking to take cruises at this time. The month is packed with a lot of family trips hence making Miami very crowded.

Miami weather in March : March marks the beginning of spring with the best weather in the year. The daily averages reach a high of 73℉ (25℃), later in the month, there is rainfall which is higher than that of winter. Tourists flock in Miami in March. Average temperature: 64℉ / 22℃. Average Precipitation: 3 in / 70 mm.

March in Miami

  • Great time to visit
  • Spring Break
  • Events: Miami Sailing Week , Ultra Music Festival , Miami Beach Pride , Film Festival

4. High temperatures and crowds characterise April

As Spring continues, the temperatures keep rising in April, and the more the crowds increase in the beaches. It is arguably one of the best times for a cruise, hence the higher prices experienced at this time of the year.

The weather makes this time one of the busiest when it comes to visitors. It is also the month when the Redland Blues Barbecue Festival and the OUTshine Film festival takes place.

Miami weather in April : The second of the best spring months in Miami, towards the end of the month there is low rainfall and the beginning of summer. Daily temperature averages reach a high of 76℉(26℃), this weather is great for swimming and outdoor activities typical of the Miami style. Average temperature: 70℉ / 24℃. Average Precipitation: 5 in / 80 mm.

April in Miami

  • Last of the drier months
  • Events: OUTshine Film Festival , Miami Beach Polo World Cup

5. In May, the crowds start to reduce as Summer is ushered in

This is the time of the year when the summer kicks-off. At this time of the year, people start to look for cheaper cruises, as it’s the start of the “offseason”. It is also the beginning of the City’s low season, especially when it comes to hospitality. Restaurants and club crowds start to decline as the heat kicks in.

The craziness of Easter ends, and the crowds begin to disappear. Towards the end of the month, more tourists start to leave, and the City becomes calmer.

Miami weather in May : May is the month that the warm summer transits into hot and humid summer with increased rainy days as a result of the humidity. Carnivals and festivals take place in May from the port to the neighborhoods of Miami. Average temperature: 76℉ / 26℃. Average Precipitation: 5 in / 130 mm.

May in Miami

  • Pretty good weather but higher chance of rain
  • Can be quite humid
  • Events: Miami Fashion Week , Sizzle Miami

6. June is quite rainy

Miami experiences the most rains in June. At this time of the year, the beaches are almost deserted during the rainstorms. Despite the rainstorms, the weather is quite hot at this time of the year.

June is officially the start of the Atlantic hurricane season and you might find some excellent cruise deals on Caribbean sailings. June is one of the most affordable months for hotel reservations .

Miami weather in June : June has the highest amount of rainfall with clear days and the afternoons are cloudy. Humidity reaches a high 70% resulting in the temperatures to be hotter. Being the beginning of the hurricane season and Florida is prone to be hit by powerful storms and hurricanes. The days are clear with temperature highs of 88℉ (30℃). Average temperature: 82℉ / 28℃. Average Precipitation: 8.1 in / 200 mm

June in Miami

  • Lower prices for hotels
  • Downpours of rain are very common
  • Start of Sea turtle nesting season
  • Events: American Black Film Festival

7. July is the peak of Summer

July is the peak of the summer cruise season. During this season, the prices of sailing are pretty high as cruises are packed because kids are out of school at this time of the year, and families are taking vacations.

However, it is also the month of Miami Swim Week. During this festival, the best of Miami gets to showcase its fashion-focused beachwear and summer collection. Because of the weather, there isn’t much happening in Miami in July.

Miami weather in July : July is among the hottest months of the year in Miami Fl.. The days and nights are consistently warm and this month receives moderate rainfall throughout the month. The daily temperature averages reach a high of 91℉ (31℃) and lows of 26℃. Average temperature: 91℉ / 31℃. Average Precipitation: 5 in / 120 mm.

July in Miami

  • Hot and humid
  • Height of the tourist season and can be crowded
  • Events: International Ballet Festival , Miami Swim Week

8. August is a relatively quiet month

August is a quieter month than July as kids start to go back to school, and the tourists are not as many as in the previous months. It is also one of the lowest seasons for cruises because of the high humidity and powerful rainstorms.

In terms of festivals and activities, this is also one of the slowest months because there are no significant festivals other than the Miami Spice month that runs through August and September. This means that the most active part of the City is the restaurant scene. Restaurants offer incredible prices during these months.

Miami weather in August : August is the most humid and hottest month of the year, the afternoons are uncomfortable and the weather is unpredictable with storms and hurricanes. It is not the best time to cruise in Miami as the humidity means you will feel hot and sweaty.

August in Miami

  • Sea water is perfect for swimming
  • Lower prices end of August

9. Slight drops in the temperature characterise September

The peak season starts from December through to April. The reason is that the temperatures during these months are lower than during the summer season. However, the temperatures are still warm, with comfortable daily highs of over 70°F or 21 degrees Celsius.

It is also a suitable travel time in Miami because the rains are not as much as during the summer and fall seasons. Sightseeing is at it’s best in Miami because of the low humidity and cooler weather. For this reason, many tourists visit Miami between December and April.

However, because it is the peak season, the prices are higher for almost everything.

This means that fewer people are out and about, and the beaches are practically empty, especially during the weekends. While hurricanes are relatively rare, people do not want to take risks. During this time of the year, the prices of food, hotels, sailing, and shopping are lower than during any other time.

Mid-Season in Miami

The Autumn season is the mid-season in Miami. While the Hurricane threats remain high in October, the temperatures start to drop during November and December. In November, the tourists begin to come back to the City as the end of November ushers at the beginning of the peak season.

The temperatures start to return to a favourable state, and people begin to leave their houses for the beaches. During this time, the City becomes home to a few guests who come to participate in the slightly significant festivals.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Rhine River?

Experience the Rhine River at its finest by cruising during the best time of year. Discover when to go for ideal weather, stunning scenery, and less crowded ports.

Book River Cruises

The Rhine River is one of the most popular rivers in Europe for cruising and for good reason. The river winds through picturesque landscapes, historic cities, and charming villages, providing travelers with a unique and unforgettable experience. But when is the best time to embark on a Rhine River cruise ? Let's explore the seasons and weather patterns to help you plan the perfect journey.

Spring (March - May)

Spring is a wonderful time to cruise the Rhine River as the scenery comes to life with colorful blooms and blossoming trees. The temperatures are mild, ranging from 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit, making it pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities. One of the highlights of spring is the annual Tulip Time festival in the Netherlands, where you can admire fields of tulips in full bloom. Additionally, many of the larger towns and cities along the river host spring festivals, such as the May Day celebrations in Cologne and the Rheingau Wine Festival in Wiesbaden.

Summer (June - August)

Summer is the peak season for Rhine River cruising , as the warmer temperatures and longer days make it ideal for exploring the region. The weather is generally sunny and warm, with temperatures ranging from 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the highlights of summer cruising is the opportunity to visit the famous Rhine River castles, as many of them are open to the public during this time. However, keep in mind that summer is also the busiest time of year, so be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices.

Also Read:  What is the best time of year to do a river cruise?

Fall (September - November)

Fall is a beautiful time to cruise the Rhine River, as the changing leaves create a stunning backdrop for your journey. The weather is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, fall is grape harvest season in the wine regions along the Rhine, making it an ideal time to sample the local wines. One of the highlights of fall cruising is the many autumn festivals that take place along the river, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich.

Winter (December - February)

Winter is the least popular time to cruise the Rhine River , but it can be a magical experience for those who don't mind the colder temperatures. The weather is generally chilly, with temperatures ranging from 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the region comes alive with festive holiday markets, such as the famous Christkindlmarkt in Cologne. Additionally, many of the river's attractions, such as the Heidelberg Castle and the Lorelei Rock, are less crowded during this time of year.

Ultimately, the best time of year to cruise the Rhine River depends on your personal preferences and travel style. If you enjoy warm weather and large crowds, summer may be the best choice for you. On the other hand, if you prefer cooler temperatures and smaller crowds, spring or fall may be more your style. And for those who love the holiday season and festive markets, winter can be a truly magical time to explore the Rhine region.

No matter what time of year you choose to cruise the Rhine River, you're sure to be captivated by the stunning scenery, rich history, and charming towns that line its banks. With so many wonderful experiences to be had, it's no wonder the Rhine remains a top destination for river cruising in Europe.

Miami dolphins | what they’re saying about dolphins’ first-round draft pick chop robinson.

The Dolphins said they fielded phone calls to move down from No. 21 in the NFL Draft on Thursday, but they decided to stay there and select Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson. (BARRY REEGER — AP Photo, file)

Here’s what NFL draft analysts are saying about the Miami Dolphins’ draft after the first round, which saw the team select Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson with the No. 21 pick Thursday night.

NFL.com : “Robinson has the speed and flexibility to be a top-notch designated pass rusher as a rookie and much more in the future. His relative lack of production in college (11.5 sacks in three years) belied his ability to win against tackles and disrupt plays. The Dolphins needed to add more edge rushers, even after signing Shaq Barrett in free agency, as both Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are working their way back from season-ending injuries.” Grade: B

CBSSports.com: “I love this pick for Miami. He has the best first step in this draft. With a little coaching, he will become a dominant pass rusher. They can also move him around as a joker on their front. Love it.” Grade: A

USAToday.com: “With Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips both recovering from season-ending injuries, Miami might have felt uncomfortable with the outlook for its pass rush being able to slow other AFC contenders. Robinson is a feast-or-famine kind of player at this point in his development, but all the athletic traits are there for him to become an extremely difficult matchup for any blocker. Operating in a spot role might be a favorable situation for the early part of his career.” Grade: B

The Athletic: “With both of its starting edge rushers (Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb) coming back from season-ending injuries, Miami needed reinforcements, even if just to rotate. The Dolphins picked up perhaps the best player available, and one with plenty of upside. They could have used an offensive lineman, but an earlier run at that position helped nudge them toward Robinson.”

“One of the most feared pass rushers in the Big Ten, Robinson commanded attention last year on Penn State’s elite defense. He picked up just four sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss in 10 games, but he was regularly double teamed in passing situations. The 6-3, 254-pounder has elite get-off at the line of scrimmage, which was validated by his 4.48 40 at the combine.” Grade: B+

Yahoo Sports : “Robinson is a raw pass rusher, but he’s found himself in a good spot playing for new Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. Robinson has all the tools in the world to become an elite pass rusher in the NFL if he can get a few signature moves down. The Dolphins also have some nice insurance in case Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips have a slow return from injury.” Grade: B

ProFootballNetwork.com : “Robinson is a powerful rusher who plays with his hair on fire to terrorize offensive linemen with motor, incredible explosive speed, and impressive bend, he enters the league without having been particularly productive for a Penn State program that has produced several prospects who didn’t quite live up to their potential when they arrived in the NFL.”

“It’s a solid pick, but with players ranked higher on the PFN board at positions of need, not to mention neglecting the real need on the offensive line, it could definitely have been a better selection.” Grade: B-

NYPost.com : “A good example of when need meets value. Robinson is explosive around the outside, creating more disruption than his 11.5 sacks in 35 career games suggests. He was at his best against vaunted Michigan.” Grade: A-

FoxSports.com: “Given how explosive the Miami Dolphins’ offense can be, it makes sense to boost a pass rush to punish opposing quarterbacks attempting to keep up, especially with former first-round edge rusher Jaelen Phillips struggling to stay healthy. Robinson explodes off the ball like he has springs in his shoes. While the splash is undeniable, his iffy productivity is worrisome. In a position group full of boom-or-bust prospects, Robinson is the biggest lottery ticket of them all.”  Grade: B+

SBNation.com: “While I would’ve gone for a lineman here to protect QB Tua Tagovailoa, Chop Robinson here is a fine pick. The Dolphins current EDGEs, Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, are both coming off really bad lower body injuries and it might be time to get some more insurance. Robinson is a blur off the edge in the passing game, and while his run defense leaves a bit to be desired, with Shaq Barrett on the field he might not have to play the run early in his career. A fine pick for the Dolphins at a position of need.” Grade: B+

BleacherReport.com: “The 6’3″, 254-pound pass-rusher explodes off the ball with the quickest first step of any edge prospect in this year’s class. In fact, his 4.48-second 40-yard dash at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine was the fifth-fastest among 250-plus-pound edge-rushers at the combine since 2003, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. He also has the flexibility to turn the corner and shorten the path toward opposing quarterbacks.”

“Robinson’s paltry total of 11.5 career sacks shouldn’t fool anyone. He led the Big Ten in pass-rush grade and pass-rush win rate this past season, per Pro Football Focus. The first-team All-Big Ten selection is an explosive edge-rusher with the potential to grow into an every-down player.”

Strengths: Lightning-quick off the snap, Gumby-like flexibility, multiple pass-rush moves, build belies power.

Weaknesses: Needs to improve against the run, can be rocked by bigger/longer offensive linemen.

PFF.com: “Robinson, ranked 40th on the PFF big board, could be considered a bit of a reach, but his potential is undeniable. He has dimensions of power and speed in his pass-rush arsenal. He also earned a 93.9 pass-rush grade over the past two seasons, which ranks second among FBS edge defenders — behind the Colts’ Laiatu Latu. Miami’s edge group could be a dominant unit if Robinson achieves his potential and Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips recover from their injuries.” Grade: Average

How much are tickets for the f1 miami gp 2024.

Despite the fact that prices have dropped significantly since the GP's debut in 2022, you may still need to spend a significant amount of money to get a good view of the track.

Which seats to get for F1 Miami GP 2024?

For starters, The Campus Pass grants you a three-day general admission ticket with access to Hard Rock Stadium, the fountains, the Marina, and the trackside lane between Turn 8-11. This year's Campus Pass starts at $150 per day or $450 less than the $590 asked last year. This option does not include an assigned seat.

However, if you'd like to have a seat, tickets skyrocket in price for the Grandstand tickets , which start at $600 and go up as high as $1,225.

But if you'd like to get a top-of-the-line experience at the Miami GP, the most expensive tickets sold are those included in the Paddock Club package , The 72 Club and the Casa Tua Trackside Club.

The Miami GP currently does not publicly list prices for tickets for either of those clubs, but according to F1 Destinations, the Paddock Club tickets could cost over $10,000.

Rory mcilroy and shane lowry rally to win zurich classic team event in a playoff.

NEW ORLEANS – Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry received a standing ovation at historic, creole French Quarter restaurant Arnaud's on the eve of their final round at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event.

They also had the largest, loudest galleries at the TPC Louisiana, where the charismatic, 34-year-old McIlroy, had not previously played.

“He's getting old, but he still moves the needle a little bit,” Lowry joked as McIlroy chuckled. “Rory brings a crowd and people love him and we've gotten a lot of love in New Orleans. We've had just the best week.”

McIlroy and Lowry won Sunday, beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer with a nervy par on the first hole of a playoff.

Trainer pushed a 6-foot par putt to the right of the cup to end it, with Lowry lifting a laughing McIlroy off the ground with a bear hug on the green.

“To win any PGA Tour event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends — we’ve known each other for a long, long time, probably like over 20 years," McIlroy said. "To think about where we met and where we’ve come from, to be on this stage and do this together — really, really cool journey that we’ve been a part of.”

McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, won his 25th PGA Tour title and first of the season. Lowry, of Ireland, claimed his third PGA Tour victory. Each walked away with about $1.29 million and 400 FedEx Cup points apiece.

“People have come out in the thousands to support us. It’s not lost on me how cool that is,” McIlroy said. “Every time I get to play in front of thousands of people, the little boy in me just thinks it’s so cool and so exciting.”

The Irish tandem closed with a 4-under 68 in the alternate-shot final round in windy conditions to match Ramey and Trainer at 25-under 263.

Ramey and Trainer began the day tied for 27th at 16 under and shot to the top of the leaderboard with nine birdies between the seventh and 18th holes. They tied the alternate-shot tournament record of 63, but then had to wait nearly three hours to see if their lead would stand up.

“That was to our advantage,” McIlroy said. “I feel for Martin and Chad a little bit. They played an unbelievable round of golf. To shoot 63 out there in those conditions in foursomes is super impressive.”

Trainer opened the playoff hole by pulling his drive into the left rough,. Ramey also yanked his approach left off the cart path and into the wall below the suites around the 18th green. Trainer then chipped short before Ramey finally got his team on the green.

“Obviously, golf is hard, and sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” Trainer said. “We did the best we could and had a chance, and that’s all you can ask for, really.”

Ramey said he and Trainer were disappointed, but stressed that, “There’s a lot of really good things to take from this week, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Lowry narrowly missed his mark twice on the playoff hole, putting an approach in a bunker and then leaving a birdie putt for the victory on the edge of the cup.

But Lowry had come through when he had to on the final regulation hole, forcing the playoff with a short birdie putt on the par-5 18th, capitalizing on McIlroy's deft lofted chip from the apron that stopped close to the pin.

Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard nearly made the playoff as well. Needing a birdie, they went long off the 18th green on their second shot. Hubbard's chip up the back apron stopped short on the fringe, but Brehm still nearly sank a birdie putt, leaving the ball near the right edge of the cup as the crowd gasped. They finished third at 24 under.

Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair, the leaders through three rounds, were still tied for the lead heading to the par-3 17th, only to make a double bogey after Blair’s tee shot landed right of the green and Fishburn chipped short. They wound up in a four-way tie for fourth at 23 under.

McIlroy and Lowry began the day two shots off the lead. They opened the round with Lowry's tee shot into the woods on the right side of the hole, and they bogeyed two of their first three holes before beginning their charge on the seventh, where McIlroy made the first of four birdie putts over the next five holes.

McIlroy had two mis-hits down the stretch that could have been costly, leaving an approach shot well short of the green on the par-4 13th and hitting short into a fairway bunker on the short par-4 16th.

Lowry chipped to about 10 feet and McIlroy saved par on 13. On 16, Lowry found the left side of the green with his approach shot from the sand and McIlroy sank a right-breaking birdie putt to lift his team into a tie for first at 25-under.

“Being able to rely on each other a little bit, I think that’s what really helped us,” McIlroy said.

The Irishmen bogeyed 17 after Lowry's faded tee shot landed in the gallery right of the green and McIlroy's chip over the ridge of a bunker ran past the hole.

That meant they would have to have a birdie on 18 to force a playoff. They got it, starting with McIlroy's clutch, booming tee shot into the water-lined fairway.

Before leaving the TPC Louisiana grounds, McIlroy and Lowry walked on stage while popular local cover band Bag of Donuts was performing a post-tournament concert. The band gave McIlroy a microphone, and he serenaded the crowd, singing Journey's “Don't Stop Believin.'”

“The reason that Shane and I both started to play golf is because we thought it was fun at some stage in our life,” McIlroy said. “Reinjecting a little bit of that fun back into it in a week like this week, it can always help.”

McIlroy & Lowry win Zurich Classic title in play-off

Zurich Classic of New Orleans leaderboard

-25 McIlroy (NI) & Lowry (Ire), Ramey (US) & Trainer (Fra) -24 Brehm (US) & Hubbard (US); -23 Higgo (SA) & Fox (NZ), Stevens (US) & Bargon (Fra), Blair (US) & Fishburn (US), Echavarria (Col) & Greyserman (US)

Irish pair Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans after beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a play-off.

American Ramey and French player Trainer shot a nine-under 63 to set a target of 25 under.

McIlroy and Lowry birdied the final hole to post 68 and force a play-off.

They parred the first play-off hole to win after Trainer missed his par putt.

It's a 25th PGA Tour title for McIlroy and third for former Open champion Lowry.

They started the final round two off the pace and fell five behind before four birdies in five holes around the turn put them in contention.

American duo Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard finished a shot adrift with four players tied on 23 under.
