Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet). 

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater. 

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Viking Star

Debuted in 2015, Viking Star was the fleet's first ocean liner. Welcoming up to 930 passengers, the ship features all-veranda staterooms ranging from 270 to 1,448 square feet. The Owner's Suite offers a dining area that can seat six, an ocean view dry sauna and a 12-seat boardroom, among other amenities.

Beyond their rooms, passengers will find a spa, several shops, a theater that hosts live performances and lectures, two cinemas for screening movies and two pools, including a glass-backed infinity pool cantilevered off the stern.

There are eight dining options to choose from, all with no additional charge or fee. For fine dining, there's The Restaurant, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant and The Chef's Table, which touts a multicourse tasting menu with wine pairings. For a more casual atmosphere, passengers can stop at Mamsen's for Norwegian deli-style eats or the Wintergarden for afternoon tea.

Seabourn Quest

Seabourn Quest, which launched in June 2011, is one of the smallest ships in Seabourn's fleet. It can fit up to 458 passengers and about one crew member for every cruiser. It is virtually identical to the Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Odyssey .

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

Once you've worked up an appetite, sit for a meal at one of the ship's four restaurants, including the main dining room and The Grill, a steakhouse helmed by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. And for evening entertainment, you'll have access to a variety of bars, plus a casino, a dance club and the Grand Salon, where cabaret performances, comedy shows and more are hosted nightly.

Seabourn Sojourn

The 458-passenger Seabourn Sojourn debuted in June 2010 and features all-suite accommodations. About 90% of the suites offer verandas, and all accommodations provide 24-hour room service, flat-screen TVs, bathrooms with dual sinks and a separate living area and bedroom. What's more, cruisers are welcomed with complimentary Champagne upon arrival and can enjoy a fruit basket that's refreshed daily. A suite stewardess is assigned to each cabin to assist with requests as well. Sojourn is virtually identical to its sister ships, Seabourn Odyssey  and Seabourn Quest . 

Outside the rooms, travelers can gamble at the casino, work up a sweat in the fitness center or relax at the spa. Those interested in soaking up the sun can snag a spot by one of two swimming pools or enjoy one of five hot tubs. Cruisers can also fuel their competitive juices with a round of shuffleboard or golf on the nine-hole putting green. When anchored, vacationers in select destinations can take advantage of the ship's water sports equipment, such as kayaks and paddle boats.

There are four dining venues to choose from on the Seabourn Sojourn, including casual and fine dining options. In the evening, cruisers can enjoy cocktails at one of the bars or dance under the stars. The ship's nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-passenger ratio means cruisers should expect exceptional service.

Seven Seas Mariner

Similar to its sister ships,  Seven Seas Navigator  and  Seven Seas Voyager , the 696-passenger Seven Seas Mariner makes service a top priority with 459 crew members on board.

Refurbished in 2018 (and debuted in 2001), the Mariner features neutral decor and finishings throughout, a remodeled library in a new location and a revamped pool deck with an open layout and new tile and teak surfaces. The Serene Spa & Wellness center received a new design with light wood accents and pebble-stone tiles, while the fitness and aerobics center offers modern equipment. Onboard activities include theatrical productions, casino games and sipping cocktails in one of five lounge areas.

Across the ship, there are seven eateries in total. All are stylishly designed, including the Prime 7 steakhouse and the flagship Compass Rose restaurant. Chartreuse, a guest favorite, highlights modern French cuisine. During the day, guests can enjoy the expanded lunch offerings at the outdoor Pool Grill or snack at the informal Coffee Connection. As with all Regent Seven Seas ships, specialty dining and shore excursions are included in the cruise fare.

Best of all, the all-suite accommodations offer beds with plush leather headboards, cozy sitting areas and artwork. All cabins are outfitted with welcome bottles of Champagne, private balconies, walk-in closets and marble bathrooms.

Seven Seas Mariner sails through much of the world, including ports in the Caribbean, Canada, Africa, Asia, Australia and more.

Silver Dawn

One of the newest ships within the Silversea Cruises fleet, Silver Dawn debuted in April 2022. Similar in size to its sister ships, Silver Muse and Silver Moon , Silver Dawn can accommodate 596 guests and has the capacity for up to 411 crew members.

Dawn is the first ship within the fleet to offer Otium, a new wellness concept that will eventually be implemented across all of Silversea's ships. The program aims to incorporate luxurious elements of the spa experience throughout the entire voyage, starting with guests' suites. Each cabin features the line's new Otium Soft Touch mattress, a redesigned pillow menu, pillow mists, and special touches like cozy blankets, in-room bath salts or hot chocolate. Suites range in size from 334 square feet to 1,970 square feet and feature ocean views, butler service and full baths with separate showers, among other amenities.

Outside of the accommodations, cruisers will find eight restaurants, including La Terrazza, an Italian eatery, Kaiseki, a Japanese outpost, and S.A.L.T. Kitchen, which features a menu that highlights the local cuisine of the ship's destination. Other onboard facilities include a casino, a pool deck, a boutique, a live entertainment lounge, a fitness center and the S.A.L.T. Lab, where passengers can enjoy workshops, lectures and cooking demonstrations.

Silver Dawn departs from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Lisbon, Portugal , to destinations like Barcelona, Spain , and Lima, Peru .

Norwegian Joy

Built in 2017, the 3,804-passenger, 1,821-crew-member Norwegian Joy was refurbished in 2020. Accommodation options include Inside, Oceanview and Balcony staterooms, as well as Suites, Concierge rooms (which come with concierge service) and The Haven cabins (which include 24-hour butler service and private sundecks). 

There are 11 dining venues on board including eight specialty restaurants, the latter of which offers American, French, Japanese, Italian, Mexican and Thai cuisines. Complimentary restaurants include the ship's three main dining rooms.

Cruisers will find plenty of things to do on board, from shopping at duty-free stores and luxury boutiques to watching stand-up comedians. The ship also offers a spa, laser tag, a racetrack, a casino, mini-golf, a fitness center, two aqua parks and more. 

Norwegian Joy sails from Miami , Los Angeles , New York , Panama City and Quebec City  to ports across the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, Bermuda and more.

Originally launched as a  Princess  ship, the 648-passenger Sirena was revived in 2016 under the Oceania  name. The ship was most recently revamped in 2019 and features many of the amenities found on its sister ships, including the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center and duty-free shopping boutiques.

Sirena's dining venues include the Red Ginger Asian restaurant and Tuscan Steak, both of which require reservations and an additional fee. Passengers can also choose from four more casual dining options included in the cruise fare. Recent guests gave the food on the ship mixed reviews. After dinner, evening entertainment includes musicals and theatrical productions, as well as games at the casino. 

Passengers can choose from Inside, Ocean View, Veranda and Suite category cabins. While Inside staterooms start at 160 square feet, those who opt for a suite will find more space and added amenities, such as free internet access and butler service. The ship also now offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone.

Oceania Sirena offers sailings in the Caribbean, South America, Europe and some transoceanic itineraries.

New York City is famous for many things, including skyscrapers, Broadway shows and some of the world's top restaurants. It's also a great jumping-off point for cruises to the Caribbean, The Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, New England and even transatlantic crossings to Europe.

Some of the top cruises out of New York are available with Royal Caribbean, which sails from Cape Liberty, New Jersey. The cruise terminal is located on the southwestern side of New York Harbor and is easily reached by car. Long-term parking is available, so you can head out on your cruise after making the drive.

If you plan to fly in before your cruise, Newark Liberty International Airport is just nine miles away. You can arrange to be met by a Royal Caribbean representative there and whisked off to your ship. Or you can arrive a day or two early to enjoy the sights and activities of New York City. Catch a Broadway show, see the Statue of Liberty or explore The Metropolitan Museum of Art before setting sail. When it's time to board, book a car service or taxi to Cape Liberty, about 20 minutes away from the Holland Tunnel (without traffic), and get ready for your getaway.

One of my favorite memories of sailing from Cape Liberty aboard Anthem of the Seas ® was the 360-degree view of New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty set against the lower Manhattan skyline. Stay on deck until your ship passes beneath the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and as you enter the Atlantic Ocean, look left to catch a glimpse of the circa-1927 Cyclone roller coaster on Coney Island.

Where will your ship sail to as you head off into the sunset? There are a variety of incredible options, so read on for the five best cruises from New Jersey sailing out of Cape Liberty.

1. Best For A Caribbean Vacation

The father of the 20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last Thursday in a reportedly drunken, impulsive leap believes his son is still alive nearly a week later.

Francel Parker, dad of missing Levion Parker, told the Daily Sun that he believes his child — whom he called a master diver — is still alive in the waters off the Bahamas.

“As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive,” Francel Parker said to the local Florida paper Wednesday.

The US Coast Guard called off its search for the North Port man a day earlier.

The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m. in front of his helpless dad and younger brother after getting into an argument with his father, witnesses previously told The Post.

But Francel, who runs an AC business in Port Charlotte, told the local newspaper that he wasn’t arguing with Levion and that his son wasn’t trying to take his own life.

He said Levion is a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat, and he is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island.

“We don’t drink,” Francel said. “I’d like to know how my son was served so much alcohol.”

Another passenger onboard the cruise who witnessed Levion’s heart-stopping jump said Francel was “fussing at him for being drunk.”

Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways.

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he bumped into the brothers and their father near the elevators.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.  

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said, calling what he witnessed “surreal.”

Another cruise guest described the frantic chaos that followed.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

Francel told the Daily Sun that he threw six life rings off the ship in hopes of saving his son before the massive vessel was able to come to a stop about 20 minutes later.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

At least 406 people on major cruise lines and ferries have gone overboard between 2000 and 2024, according to data collected by retired professor and cruise industry researcher Ross Klein.

Death rates among overboard passengers and crew members vary significantly among cruise lines, but even the safest cruise companies were only able to rescue about 40% of people who fall or jump off the ship, Klein told the Washington Post in July.

A closely watched measure of inflation remained stronger than expected in March, worrying news for Federal Reserve officials who have become increasingly concerned that their progress on lowering price increases might be stalling.

The surprisingly stubborn inflation reading raised doubts among economists about when — and even whether — the Fed will be able to start cutting interest rates this year.

The Consumer Price Index climbed 3.8 percent on an annual basis after stripping out food and fuel prices, which economists do in order to get a better sense of the underlying inflation trend. That “core” index was stronger than the 3.7 percent increase economists had expected, and unchanged from 3.8 percent in February. The monthly reading was also stronger than what economists had forecast.

Counting in food and fuel, the inflation measure climbed 3.5 percent in March from a year earlier, up from 3.2 percent in February and faster than what economists anticipated. A rise in gas prices contributed to that inflation number.

This week’s inflation figures come at a critical juncture for the Fed. Central bankers have been hoping to confirm that warmer-than-expected inflation figures at the start of the year were just a seasonal quirk, not evidence that inflation is getting stuck well above the 2 percent target. Wednesday’s report offers little comfort that the quick early 2024 readings have not lasted.

“It is what it is: It’s a stronger-than-expected number, and it’s showing that those price pressures are strong across goods and services,” said Blerina Uruci, chief U.S. economist at T. Rowe Price. “It’s problematic for the Fed. I don’t see how they can justify a June cut with this strong data.”

Policymakers have made it clear in recent months that they want to see further evidence that inflation is cooling before they cut interest rates. Fed officials raised borrowing costs to 5.3 percent in 2022 and mid-2023, which they think is high enough to meaningfully weigh on the economy. Central bankers forecast in March that they would cut interest rates three times this year.

But Fed officials do not want to cut rates before they are confident inflation is on track to return to normal. Lowering borrowing costs too early or too much would risk allowing price increases to pick back up. And if households and businesses come to expect inflation to remain slightly higher, officials worry that could make it even harder to stamp out down the road.

That threat of lingering inflation has become a more serious concern for policymakers since the start of the year. Inflation flatlined in January and February after months of steady declines, raising some alarm at the Fed and among forecasters. Going into the year, investors expected the Fed to cut rates sharply in 2024 — perhaps five or six times, to about 4 percent — but have steadily dialed back those expectations .

Stocks dropped sharply after the inflation release as investors further pared back their expectations for lower rates. Following the report, market pricing suggested that many investors now expect just one or two cuts his year.

The S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite each closed nearly 1 percent lower on Wednesday. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks smaller companies, was down nearly 3 percent.

Investors would like to see lower interest rates, which tend to bolster prices for assets like stocks. But the Fed might struggle to explain why it is cutting rates at the current moment: Not only is inflation showing signs of getting stuck well above the central bank’s target, but the economy is growing at a fairly rapid pace and employers are hiring at a robust clip.

In short, the Fed’s policies do not appear to have pushed America to the brink of a recession — and in fact, there are signs that they may not be having as much of an effect as policymakers had expected when it comes to growth.

While the Fed officially targets Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation , a separate measure, the Consumer Price Index report released on Wednesday comes out earlier and includes data that feeds into the other metric. That makes it a closely watched signal of how price pressures are shaping up.

The inflation report’s details offered little reason to dismiss the gauge’s continued stubbornness as a fluke. They showed that housing inflation remains firm, auto insurance costs picked up at a rapid pace and apparel prices climbed.

In a development that is likely to be especially notable for Fed officials, a measure of services inflation contributed to the pickup in annual inflation. Policymakers watch those prices closely, because they can reflect the strength of the underlying economy and because they tend to persist over time.

The question, increasingly, is whether Fed officials can cut interest rates at all this year in a world where inflation appears to be flatlining.

Ms. Uruci said that with every month inflation stays stubborn, the Fed may need to see more convincing evidence — and a more sustained return to deceleration — to feel confident that price increases are genuinely coming under control.

Kathy Bostjancic, Nationwide’s chief economist, predicted that rate cuts could now be delayed to this autumn, if they happen in 2024 at all.

“We now think September, if they start to cut rates, is more likely than July,” Ms. Bostjancic said. The new report “shakes the confidence that inflation is on this downward trend.”

If the Fed does not cut rates soon, the election could make the start of reductions more politically fraught. Central bankers are independent of the White House and typically insist that they do not make policy with an eye on the political calendar.

Still, cutting in the months just before the election could put policymakers under a partisan spotlight : Former President Donald J. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has already painted possible rate cuts as a political ploy to help Democrats. Lower rates tend to help incumbents, since they bolster the economy.

But the current economic moment is a politically complicated one.

Consumers dislike rapidly rising prices, and inflation has been dogging President Biden’s approval ratings for months. That said, consumers have become less concerned about them in recent months as the pace of inflation has come down from its peak in 2022.

At the same time, some Americans are chafing against high interest rates, the medicine the Fed uses to cure rapid inflation because they make it more expensive to borrow to buy a house or make other large purchases.

Mr. Biden has struck a concerned tone about high prices and tough housing affordability conditions in recent months, while pinning at least some of the blame for recent rapid inflation on corporations.

He reiterated that message on Wednesday, while saying that he still expects to see rate cuts this year. Mr. Biden’s comments amounted to a forecast rather than a prescription, but they were unusual coming from a White House that usually avoids talking about Fed policy out of respect for the central bank’s independence.

“We have dramatically reduced inflation down from 9 percent to close to 3 percent,” Mr. Biden also noted.

Bryson DeChambeau, who was the 18-hole leader, shot a second-round 73. DeChambeau, currently at 6-under-par and tied with Max Homa, is searching for his second major championship this weekend.

Howling winds at Augusta

The winds are howling at Augusta National.

Gary Woodland's ball at the par-3 16th moved down the green from its original spot.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele had an extra wait at the par-4 11th.

A difficult conclusion to this second round ahead.

Scheffler tied for the lead

After a critical par save on 9, Scheffler opens the back nine with a birdie on 10.

It hasn't been the easiest day for Scheffler, who already has two bogeys on the card.

But Scheffler is starting to find his form with Amen Corner and two par-5s upcoming.

Zach Johnson yells obscenity

Masters champion Zach Johnson has been caught on the broadcast uttering an obscenity in the direction of patrons.

Johnson scored a triple bogey on No. 12, the final suffering a missed nine-footer. He received some light mock applause from those back at the tee on the par 3 hole, looked up and said, “F—- you,” per a recording of the broadcast of Amen Corner.

Johnson was the 2023 United States Ryder Cup captain and while he remains a regular player on the PGA Tour, he’s been more known this season for his outbursts towards fans. At the WM Phoenix Open he was compelling to unruly spectators about their behavior during a playing partner’s swing, and told them, “Don’t sir, me.” It’s since become a meme in the golf world.

As of this writing, Johnson is 8-over through 14 holes, four shots beyond the projected cut line.

Scheffler with critical par save at 9

After Scottie Scheffler's second shot fell off the front of the green on No. 9, he was able to get the up and down to save par.

Scheffler is currently at 6-under-par, tied with Max Homa and one back of Bryson DeChambeau.

The 2022 Masters champion had two birdies, two bogeys and the rest pars on the front nine.

How many players make the cut at the Masters?

At the Masters, only the top 50 (plus ties) make the cut and will play the weekend.

It's official: Tiger has made 24 consecutive cuts at Augusta National.

At 48 years old, with a fused ankle and back, in blustering course conditions, the accomplishment is nothing short of remarkable. Jordan Spieth, Brian Harman, Rickie Fowler, Viktor Hovland, Tom Kim and several other young, top-ranked pros are set to miss the cut.

But the 15-time major champion with a bionic leg is still in the mix heading into the weekend. It's hard to put into words how impressive that is.

He shoots an even-par 72, in windy conditions and will make his 24th consecutive cut at the Masters, a new record.

Max Homa heads into the weekend at 6 under

T2: Max Homa (-6) -1 through 18

Max Homa will be in contention for his first major championship this weekend in Augusta.

Homa made a short par putt to close Friday at 6 under for the tournament and 1 under in the second round. He sits a stroke behind leader Bryson DeChambeau.

Homa has never finished better than T43 at the Masters, so 2024 is proving to be a huge step forward.

DeChambeau back in the lead

1: Bryson DeChambeau (-7) E through 12

A birdie on the par-3 12th hole has put Bryson DeChambeau back in front.

He quickly recovered from a bogey on No. 11. DeChambeau holds a one-stroke lead over Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler.

Moments later, a shocking bogey for Scottie Scheffler on No. 5, his first of the tournament.

It's a three-way tie for the lead with Scheffler, DeChambeau and Homa at 6-under-par.

Tiger Woods remains even par for the day.

He records a par-3 on the 16th hole to remain at 1-over-par.

Tiger is T27, despite difficult conditions at Augusta and is two holes away from securing a spot in the weekend at this year's Masters.

Fred Couples still hopes to play Masters again

Fred Couples said he hopes to be back at Augusta National again in 2025, even after shooting 12-over for the first two rounds.

“I'm planning on being healthy and making the cut and telling (chairman Fred Ridley) I'm coming back the next year, too,” Couples told reporters.

Couples, 64, has lifetime playing privileges here as the 1992 champion. He was T50 a year ago, and had a top-25 finish as recently as 2017. It’s not crazy that he wants to keep going, but he admitted this year’s tournament was difficult.

“My back is shot,” Couples said.

He said he has to get it fixed as it’s not a one-week problem and has caused him to withdraw from multiple Champions Tour events recently.

“Yesterday on the 17th hole I thought I going to not be able to walk, and I just took my time and bogeyed 16, 17 and 18 just to finish,” Couples said.

So why did Couples keep going? He said a major reason why was to help playing partners Adam Hadwin and Stewart Hagestad, neither of whom are Masters regulars.

Hadwin finished his second round at 4-over, and will sweat out the afternoon to see if he made the cut. Hagestad shot 8-over for the first 36 holes.

Tiger is passing the test (so far)

We said the early restart and the quick turnover to the second round would be Tiger Woods' greatest challenge this week. He may be passing the test. Woods just birdied the par 5 15th hole by getting on in two to get to 1-over par. With just three holes to go, Woods looks in good shape to make the cut and improve his remarkable Masters cut streak to 24 at 48 years old. As of right now, most projections have the cut line at 4-over, giving Woods a solid cushion.

At times Friday, it wasn't clear Woods would be able to maintain. But Woods' biggest strength was his bounce-back ability. He answered bogeys on 6, 8 and 15 to never let the damage get too bad. It's not like he's just hanging on. He's 28th right now at a difficult, windy Augusta.

Woods gets shot back on 15

After finding the fairway on the par-5 15th, Tiger Woods blasted a 3-wood that landed on the green.

Woods was able to make birdie, going back to 1-over-par for the tournament and even for the day.

Tiger is T30 and in the cut line.

After three straight pars on Amen Corner, Tiger Woods bogeyed the par-4 14th after sailing his second shot over the green.

Woods is 2-over-par for the tournament and T39, still in the cut line with four holes to play.

High scoring average for Round 2

Round two scoring average for the field is currently 75.17.

It's on pace for the highest field average in round two of the Masters since 2007 (75.63).
