Ride from village to village on an immersive Italian cycling adventure.

If your idea of a Tuscan bike vacation evokes visions of rolling golden hills, mid-ride espresso stops, climbs to medieval hilltop villages, wood-fired pizza, and a nightly glass of Chianti, and you’re spot on for what you’ll experience during this cycling camp. We’ve curated our favorite routes, ranging from 40-70 miles, to showcase a variety of areas in the Tuscan countryside, with options to go fast, slow, long, or short. Don’t worry; there will be plenty of downtime to enjoy this spectacular region. Wine tasting, a cooking class, soaking in a natural hot spring, and touring Siena are all on the itinerary.

  • Bike among vineyards and olive groves on daily guided and supported rides
  • Enjoy family-prepared meals by our Italian hosts, including pizza made in a wood-fired oven
  • Stay in cozy bed-and-breakfast accommodations off the beaten path
  • Explore Siena, taste wine and try the local cuisine
  • Take part in an authentic Italian cooking class

cycling house trips

It doesn’t get more authentic than this: Our food in Tuscany is prepared fresh by the Italian family who runs Palazzo a Merse, the bed and breakfast where we stay. Many of the meats are sourced from a farm down the road, and the veggies are grown in the field behind the property or by the neighbors across the street. Meats are cooked over an open flame, and pizzas are prepared in a 500-year-old wood-fired oven. Family B&B meals are balanced with dining out to enjoy the local cuisine.

Accommodations

Meet your new extended family at Palazzo a Merse, a restored 18th-century farmhouse where we’ll spend the week. Owned by our guide Andréa Rossi and his wife and sister’s family, the rustic Tuscan B&B is about 10 kilometers from Siena in the quiet countryside of Val di Merse. Relax in the spacious, shady garden, or enjoy breakfast or a glass of wine as you lounge around the outdoor pool. Family-style meals are cooked by our hosts and served outside when weather allows.

Welcome to Tuscany!

Riders will arrive at the Florence Airport or the Siena Train Station, and we will shuttle to B&B Palazzo a Merse.

Anyone renting a car can arrive at the B&B any time after 11 a.m. We’ll head out for an arrival day spin (~2 hours) to explore our surroundings for the week.

Today’s ride:

Arrival day spin: 21 miles, 1,044 feet of climbing

Tour the Val de Merse Region

We will ride around the Val de Merse area of Tuscany on this beautiful loop, with options to shorten or lengthen the route. We’ll stop at a café in Chiusdino and see the Abbey of San Galgano.

In the afternoon, we’ll go wine tasting at one of our favorite wineries in Tuscany.

Chiusdino: 39 miles, 2,976 feet of climbing

Explore the Val D'orcia Region

This ride is a point-to-point tour through beautiful Tuscan countryside from our B&B to a small agrotourismo property near Asciano, sweeping through the heart of the Val D’orcia region.

In the afternoon, we’ll head to Montalcino to see where Brunello wine is produced.

B&B Point-to-Point (Val D’Orcia): 36 miles, 3,287 feet of climbing

Option to extend the ride by pedaling up to Montalcino!

There are two options today: either a recovery tour around the B&B or a 3-hour ride to Pievescola with a café break in the village.

After the ride and lunch, we’ll go visit Siena. We’ve organized an optional walking tour, which is a great way to learn about the amazing history in this area. Dinner will be enjoyed in the heart of Siena.

Recovery Loop: ~1 hour

Pievescola Loop: 40 miles, 3,334 feet of climbing

Discover Chianti

Learn more about the legend of that famous black rooster as we take a tour of the Chianti region. We’ll shuttle to the start, and mid-ride, we’ll enjoy a coffee stop in the village of Gaiole, which is where the Eroica Gran Fondo starts and finishes. The route finishes in the medieval village of San Gusme, where we’ll enjoy lunch.

After lunch, we’ll shuttle back to the B&B, where the family will host a cooking class. You’ll learn how to m ake homemade pasta and tiramisu (among other dishes), so when you host your next dinner party, you’ll be able to show off your new skills!

Chianti Tour: 37 miles, 3,447 feet of climbing

Option to add mileage on for those who want more riding.

The Heart of Val D'orcia

The day starts with a van shuttle from the B&B to Torrenieri in the heart of Tuscany. Today’s point-to-point ride has it all and visits the beautiful city of Pienza, where we will stop for an espresso with a view. The ride finishes in the small village of Montisi, and we cap it off with a beautiful lunch overlooking the Tuscan countryside.

The Heart of Val D’Orcia: 37 miles, 3,500 feet of climbing

Ciao & Grazie!

Checkout is 11 a.m. Riders will pack up, and we’ll shuttle back to the Florence Airport or the Siena Train Station for departures.

Five Star all the way. The Glacier to Yellowstone (camping) trip was wonderful. I enjoyed the breathtaking views and experiences throughout the trip. The hospitality of the staff trumped the views and experiences. What a great team of people. I could not have asked for a better vacation.

Solvang March 2018-Very, very impressed!!!

My wife and started talking about doing a cycling tour/camp about 2 years ago. We were decent cyclists in our pasts but now we were coming back into it after 7 years away from it. We were a bit nervous therefore we were incredibly diligent in finding the right company/team to book with. After about a year, and hours of computer searches, contacts, reviews etc…I found “The Cycling House”. I read all the reviews and details I could find about their trips and services which were all very positive. After several emails to Brendan Halpin and Shaun Radely with a million questions we decided to pull the trigger and book a trip for their Solvang California trip located a short way from Santa Barbara. By the way, all questions were answered thoroughly and professionally putting my wife and I at ease about our upcoming adventure. I decided to ship my bike through Bike Flights as per Brendan’s suggestion and my wife rented one from there rental fleet which they fit for her to for the week. My bike was assembled and ready to ride upon my arrival. Seamless process! Now my wife and I are around 60 and having taken so many years off we were a bit nervous about the length and climbing of each daily ride when we arrived. Day 1 was an arrival spin through rolling hills, about 25-30 miles. From the start we realized that others in the group were stronger and more seasoned cyclists than we were. Ages of our group ranged from 40 -70. When we returned to home base which was the Ballard Inn, Brendan assured us that they were already planning out our route for the following day that would allow us to be part of the group yet be manageable for our level. Sure enough the next morning they had a plan and it worked perfectly. This is how they approached every ride day for us. Sometimes they would put our bikes on the support van and drop us off part way on the route or other times we would start with the group, ride to a certain point, bikes on the van, and then out to a point where we could rejoin the group. Never did we ever feel that we were inconveniencing them at all, it was more like it was there pleasure. That is above and beyond in my book, that is incredible service. All rides were fully supported with various endurance fuels and whole foods and hydration before, during, and after.

Our ride team of Brendan, Brie, Corey, and James were amazing and very knowledgeable. The last 2 days we were joined by owner Owen Gue. He also was a real pleasure to ride and hang out with. Although they are young (25-35 I believe) I feel they are mature beyond there years and there people skills are first rate. I just can’t say enough about them. By the end, they were more than our guides, they were our friends.

Our home base was the Ballard Inn; great accommodations, food and staff. But the Cycling House service is what it is all about. Our experience was superb and would highly recommend them.

In closing, a side note; several cyclists were returning guests from previous trips in other locales, by the time we left we knew we would be cycling in other places with the Cycling House in the near future!

Great people make this a fantastic camp. Very helpful and accommodating. They cook terrific healthy meals. The riding is excellent. Mount Lemmon is a beast of a climb. Not too steep but very long. They have ride support and usually split into 2 or more groups so you can go your own pace. They mix up the routes and terrain so you have different rides each day. Highly recommend it if you want do get in some serious winter miles, hang with great people, eat well and relax. It’s not a tour but a great place to ride a lot.

A person’s experience at The Cycling House is %100 Organic. As a camper I truly felt like the it was my camp, my house and meals were prepared just right. With a lot of camps to choose from, going to various locations, TCH offers something for every level. The camp I attended was mostly triathletes and literly everyone was breaking through platues because there was a lot of time to recover and learn from other athletes.

Absolutely the BEST!! Excellent rides, suberb food, fantastic staff. We come back every year.

These guys provide a great all around experience.

The Cycling House’s amazing staff are really what makes them a perfect vacation option. They are fun, laid back, approachable, yet very professional about providing you with the best vacation possible on two wheels. Their accommodations and locations around the world are top notch. I think that having a home base for a cycling vacation is a great way to go, and The Cycling House is a great place to look!

The Cycling House is no doubt the best place to go for a cycling oriented trip. Every ride is guided not by someone who acts like there there for the money but someone who’s out for a great ride with friends. The food was the best I have ever had it made going home to my moms cooking pretty tough. Everyone working at the house was helpful not just during the rides, but after as well teaching me about recovery, race tactics, training, power tap. They got me on my feet for the season and can’t wait to go back year after year.

A great training experience!! They provide an intimate setting with wonderful food and coaches!

The Cycling House sets the benchmark that all other cycling camp/tour companies should aspire to. I am a repeat client that will continue to return due to the outstanding service that the TCH crew provides. The staff knows exactly what is necessary to create an exceptional experience: great accommodations, world-class food, a knowledgeable staff of talented cyclists, challenging and beautiful routes all wrapped in a ‘you’re family’ ethic. The needs of each individual rider are attended to. Your form not quite there yet? You will never ride alone. You want to hammer? No problem; there is a pro rider who will bring the pain! The only downside is the addicting experience TCH creates…you don’t want the camp to end and you WILL be back!

The Cycling House is unique in that it offers tours to a group from.a posh base camp with expert guides, full support vehicles, awesome healthy food, and a crew of the best people you’ll meet anywhere. Whether it is a destination camp, a camp with a coach, or a camp for a group of friends, The Cycling House will bend over backwards to fill your every need. They will spoil you. You get to focus on riding the bike, learning and having fun. Going home is tough.

Owen and his staff make it a true ‘pro’ experience! A tip of the hat to The Cycling House!

Great crew lead by Owen Gue!! Great rides with excellent support. Superb food. One could not ask for a better cycling camp experience!!

The Cycling House staff was awesome. I have recruited friends and teammates to go with me every year for the last 3 years and our crew gets bigger everytime. I would recommend this house to anyone that wants a few days of solid riding. Owen has a remarkable understanding of hospitality industry and what it takes to keep guests coming back year after year. The staff and food are exceptional and the rides are top notch.

Went to my first camp in Tucson last Feb. We stayed at an awesome house, like 3m. When we woke up our breakfast was ready, prepared by Ty, (top of the line chef) and I bikes were all ready to go, on the van, all we had to do was climb in. Every meal was excellent. I was not at the top of the group and when I would fall back Anya was there to ride with me or bring me back. Brandon was always around to help with questions and Owen was always ready with whatever you needed on the ride. I would recommend these guys to anyone. Owen has my email and number and I would be happy to talk to someone thinking about joining up with TCH for a great experience.

I have attended two Cycling House Tuscon Camps. The staff is outstanding. The food is off the charts good. The house is beautiful. The riding spectacular. You wouldn’t know it from these comments but I’m actually quite hard to please. But these guys are that good. I recomend The Cycling House to anyone who rides a bike and wants to enjoy a week in the desert when its cold at home!

I have been to The Cycling House in January 2010 and January 2011. I enjoyed myself so much the first time that I came back the following year and plan on going back next year. I believe that alone speaks volumes. Both experiences were in Tuscon, Arizona. I can say unequivocally that there is no better riding in the winter months than Tuscon. Owen Gue (the owner) and his crew are top notch. From the great guides to the great cook, all matters are taken care of. From the time you step off the plane in Tuscon, every detail is taken care of. They shuttle you and your bike to the house. Or I should say mansion. They put your bike together. All rides are with a guide or 2 or 3!!! No need for a GPS! The Chef (Ty) keeps you nice an healthy while you there. My energy level was never an issue with the amount of food that was offered at The Cycling House. I had a massage every night I was there. The other cyclists from all over the U.S. were very friendly and encouraging to be with.

I’ve been on several cycling/multisport camps over the past 5 years, and i have to say that these guys are the most professional–yet fun–group of the bunch! They are completely client-oriented, and knowledgeable but without any hint of resentment at how stupid/selfish/whiney/egotistical/you-name-it! their clients might be. The food is exceptional across the board, the accomodations outstanding, and the general atmosphere they create makes it a pleasure to be there. Youget what you pay for!

They are willing to customize the rides for all skill levels. The staff is extremely friendly and fun to be around. The food is excellent and they will make anything you want. What else is there to say.

If you want to know what it feels like to train like a pro, visit The Cycling House, or do one of their destination camps. I did a camp in Tucson this past winter. The Cycling House provided first class accommodations, amazing home cooked meals, incredible rides and 100% support. You basically show up and train. Everything else is done. They setup your bike, get you ready to roll each day, give you all the fuel you need and make sure your rides. Equally as important, the people who work for The Cycling House are wonderful to be around. They work hard, play hard, and all know how to tear it up on the bike.

The crew at the Cycle House, lead by Owen Gue, treated us to a spectacular stay in Tucson in late Feb 2011. We had great riding, organized friendly guides and fantastic meals. We plan to go back in 2012 and stay longer next time.

In short….great service! As cyclists, the Cycling House staff really have their service dialed in; great food (and ’53×11′ coffee!), prompt out-of-the-airline box bike assembly (a nice touch), excellent local route knowledge and ride support for all levels, laundry facilities, product samples from quality names like Hammer Nutrition and HED etc. Having said that, accommodation is very nice(large new desert-style house) if a bit casual, with double occupancy. Hammer-heads can go hard while those in ‘mid-winter form’ will still be supported. Having said that be prepared for a bit of casual living; bedrooms are simple but comfortable, usually double occupancy, laptops and iPads everywhere.

The Staff was extremely positive, helpful and professional. The food and location was outstanding. Making it all a very memorable week of riding.

The most difficult part of this is limiting my enthusiastic support for The Cycling House to one paragraph. Although the service was amazing, from airport arrival and bike build to departure, the food kicked it, the facilities still move me in unspeakable ways, the real difference was the people. Owen Gue and his team are simply the coolest people you are going to ride with. Somehow they pull off the most intense riding sessions with such a relaxed attitude that if my legs didn’t hurt so bad I might think I was just chillin with a bunch of friends. They kicked my ass but I’m going back, so I hope to meet you there, we’ll have an absolute blast.

We enjoyed a week’s stay at The Cycling House’s Winter camp in Arizona. Everything was taken care of, including bike set up, meals, guided rides, nutrition and hydration, after ride entertainment options / ideas. The staff of the camp were extremely personable, fit, and knowledgeable about all aspects of riding a bike. Aside from the wonderful accommodations and staff, the edge this group has is the professional aspect of the camp in offering Hammer Nutrition products, body strength exercises, tips on riding various terrain, etc. etc. Their knowledge runs deep and they are ready and willing to share. I highly recommend this camp for the serious cyclist, and also those who may not be as serious about performance, but want to enjoy their riding more – this is a great place to do so.

I have been a regular at The Cycling House in Tucson for nearly a decade. These young men are gifted in that they can show respect to the older athlete without being condescending. They cook like gods. They tailor make rides for each of us. They take us under their wings. I have traveled with other companies but would now go with no one else.

Great set up. Big friendly house with accommodating staff added to the great cycling. Great rides and support from start to finish.

The Cycling House does an amazing job – it was a great week with fantastic cycling, leadership, food and accommodations. I would highly recommend it if you want some challenging and spectacular rides with friendly and outgoing people as you enjoy a week in lovely Tucson!

Training with The Cycling House is an amazing experience. The rides are difficult, but support is given for those who are not up to the day’s task. Options are given for the more experienced cyclists to put in additional mileage. The living arrangements are part of the fun, as the riders stay together in a single (albeit large) house, which adds to the spirit of comraderie. Opportunities are given for additional workouts and/or massages. And, finally, the food is outstanding, and is both healthy and flavorful. That’s why I am, and will continue to be, a repeat customer.

Staff, food, Housing, planning = perfect.

This was my second time with The Cycling House and I can’t say enough good things about my experience. The staff is very well organized, caring and totally professional. The rides are wonderful, the food fantastic, and everyone has a great time. Rides are tailored to each person’s ability, the sag wagon is always there when you need it, and, in spite of unseasonally cold weather, everyone rode with a smile on their faces. I highly recommend choosing a tour with this company – you won’t be disappointed!

Talk about a place that has a mission driven staff, of wonderful human beings, whose reason-to-be, is to give its clients a great week, on bikes and off. In addition to sun and epic road climbs that inspire one to think of Tucson, there’s a lot that makes the Cycling House its own treasure. First off– the vibe. As a camper you are put at ease both in the house, and on the bike. Not knowing other campers, I’ve always felt at home the lovely Tucson digs. The rides are extremely well organized, and all campers, regardless of level, are put at ease and taken care of. The food is amazing. And delightfully nourishing. The staff are elite athletically; they share training knowhow, and support you on rides. This year I rented a bike from the CH fleet. The bike was great, perfectly fit upon arrival, and tuned daily. Other perks; availability to a masseusse, the espresso machine, and the ping pong table! While the level of care is high, this is not a pampered spa or stuffy in any way.

Tuscon Camp: First Class rides that are followed by first class support and accommodations. The house we stayed in was huge and unbelievably comfortable with the best pre and post ride food I have ever had. Fully supported rides that included all the Hammer Nutrition products you needed. The Cycling House and the Staff, as far as I am concerned, cannot be beat or outdone in the Cycling Camp arena.

The Cycling House provides accommodation for all of it’s particpants in one well-designed, enormous house. It is a great forum to get to know others, but there is space for privacy if that is desired. Meals (which are excellent) are taken together- also great for getting to know fellow participants. You can do as much or as little as you want and they will tailor the cycling to your requirements. They really accomodate making it work for YOU. No pressure.

Excellent service, fantastic support, great meals and a whole lot of fun. I will make a point to make a trip to the cycling house a yearly occurrence.

Where to start… I love these guys..from the friendly airport pickup.. to the bike support.. to the great food.. they are top notch.. I am not a person that generally likes to hang out with large groups.. but when surrounded by such friendly people it becomes so easy to relax and just enjoy…… I am starting to feel like one of the family!!!

Rather than comparing The Cycling House to other tour companies, I compare them to other great companies, like Disney or Ritz Carlton, their service and attention to detail is exemplary for any company and an example of what a company does to become an icon in thier industry.

It doesn’t get any better than how the folks at The Cylcing House organize and conduct their tours. The people are world class, to say nothing of being exuberant about cycling and touring on a bike, the routes are well planned and masterfully supported (they always seem to be there when needed–how do they do that?), and the food is five star. TCH’s pride in providing ‘the ultimate training experience’ is right on and well earned in all respects.

4 buddies and I finished a great 4 day camp with the cycling house. We rode MTB and road bikes at all the great places. Owen & Brandon have the perfect mix of customer service and friendliness down. The accommodations were perfect, the food was healthy and appropriate for the activities and the overall experience was like riding with old friends who happen to pull all the time and serve you food.

Owen Gue and his team are top notch riders and solid individuals. They work to understand your capabilities and objectives, then put together rides that exceed your expectations. Equipment and housing were exceptional. Food was really good and plentiful. More than anything, though, you are riding with guys who love the sport, are willing to share their experience with you, but understand it is your vacation and do not force themselves on you. I will be back.

Our trip last October with Siciclando was outstanding. Every detail was well attended to and enhanced our experience in discovering Sicily. Authentic, well paced, well organized-couldn’t be better. Ascending to the top of Mt. Etna was an unforgettable experience that capped off a week of touring the highlights of Sicily, cycling, and savouring one culinary treat after another. Mille grazie to Giuseppe and Daniele who did an exceptional job of taking care of us!

Still riding on a natural high from the incredible experience The Cycling House crew created! They have built an exceptional operation that goes above and beyond in catering to all imaginable camper wants/needs. They share their passion and bring so much joy to others. Will absolutely sign up for another trip!

This was my second camp with The Cycling House and like the first it was amazing. The rides, food, and service were perfectly dialed in! Can’t wait to go back!

This was my first bike tour / camp, but I was really happy with The Cycling House camp in Tucson, AZ the first week of March, 2016. Great to escape the late winter cold of the Pac NW to get some sunshine and an early start to my triathlon training. Stayed at a house with 15 other guests, 5 enthusiastic young staff members, we had daily rides of 40-50 miles (including the famous Mount Lemmon climb!), we were served three tasty and nutritious meals each day, they also offered some short courses on cooking, bike maintenance and riding skills. I’ll be back next year!

Explore America & Europe Without Worrying About Trip Details with The Cycle House

cycling house trips

While the thought of booking a cycling trip to an international destination is exciting, it’s also expensive, complicated, and can present a language barrier, especially if you don’t know Italian, Spanish, French, etc. And if you want to bring your own bike, you have to invest in a case of some kind, break down your bike, then reassemble it once you arrive, plus pay airline baggage fees.

If you’re in America, the country has an unlimited amount of places to ride where you can still experience bits and pieces of European cycling culture. With all the details involved in a cycling trip arranged, all you have to do is show up with your bike and ride and that is what The Cycling House hopes you will do.

Who is The Cycling House?

cycling house trips

The company was founded in 2005 by CEO Owen Gue. The Cycling House is based in Missoula, Montana. The primary goal of the company is to create “ a vacation-style getaway that you can’t find anywhere else. We live by a “we take care of everything” attitude and a welcome-to-the-family vibe that is sure to re-light the fire in any cyclist .”

With that welcoming attitude toward bicycle travel, The Cycling House aims to go above and beyond what many companies offer. Gue states the ultimate goal is to “. ..push the boundaries of what you may think of as a typical cycling trip. We strive to wow our guests with our extensive knowledge of endurance sports, an over-the-top attention to detail[,] and an environment that fosters friendships through riding bikes, exploring new places and great food !”

Expert Staff and a Company Giving Back to its Community

cycling house trips

The company hires athletes who love and live for cycling and who will happily take on the role of cycling coach, photographer, ride partner, and support crew. Then all the other details, such as world-class food and accommodations are taken care of. All a guest has to do is book the trip and show up to ride.

The Cycling House is also a business that supports the communities its trips traverse. It supports youth cycling in Montana and assists in building mountain bike trails, so your dollars/ euros go to good causes and not just into the pockets of the company. That’s definitely a reason to feel good about booking a trip!

Destinations Covered By The Cycling House

cycling house trips

The company has around 30 employees and staff, which can supply guides and SAG support for the six major trips it hosts. The Cycling House offers trips in North America (Arizona, Montana, California, and Colorado) and Europe (Italy and Spain).

For each of its supported ride locations, The Cycle House will supply a high-quality rental road bike. Or if you wish to bring your own bike, the company’s mechanics will assist in unpacking and checking over your bike, then help you disassemble it for your drive or flight home.

Since The Cycle House offers trips to a limited number of destinations, its trips are a bit more expensive. One of its trips, for instance, would involve a guest traveling to Montana (plane fare or drive time is not included in the trip cost). The trip itself is from Yellowstone to Glacier and runs for six nights/ seven days. The price for this trip is based on double occupancy and is $4,350. It includes the following amenities.

  • Six nights/Seven days accommodations (double occupancy)
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) for seven days
  • Mechanical support (including bike build and breakdown)
  • Professional trip guides
  • Daily sag support
  • Ride nutrition products
  • High-quality ride photos
  • Arrival Day Airport & Hotel pickups in Billings (BIL)
  • Departure Day Airport & Hotel dropoffs in Flathead Valley/Glacier International (FCA)

Last Thoughts

If you are seeking a cycling trip in the United States that equals what many bicycle travel companies offer guests when they travel to Europe, then a trip with The Cycle House might be right for you. Of course, the company does offer two major destinations in Europe for cycling trips if you still wish to ride somewhere internationally.

But if taking an international cycling trip seems too expensive and complicated to digest, then again, a trip with The Cycle House seems like a good choice. The factor that would put me off, though, is cost. You might be able to find another bicycle travel company that has similar trips for less money.

Have a great weekend everyone and I hope get out on some good rides!!!

Day trips in Russia

Newcomers can test their “strength” on a one-day trip – the roads should not be complicated and the distances should not be too long. For first-time riders, study the route carefully, taking into account not only the length of the road, but also the conditions: there should be no long climbs and no high mountain passes. The flatter the road, the better. Do not ride close to crowded and busy large traffic lanes, even if conditions permit.  Also, make sure carry your Russian invitation letter with your visa .

Route: Levutov – Pavlovsky town

Distance: 65 km

From Reutov (metro station “Novokosino”) outside Moscow, via Saltykovsk, Zheleznodorozhny, Fedurnovo, then turn to Biserovo, to Staraya Kupavna, then to Elektrostal via Ivashevo, and finally to Pavlovsky Posad via Subbotino, the intercity electric train This is a good route for newcomers to the town of Pavlovsky Posad (Vokhna or Pavlovsky Posad station).

This route is good for beginners: the terrain remains almost unchanged throughout the route. It’s mainly asphalt, but it’s quiet, with a rural landscape and few cars. Also, there are many intercity train stations along the way – if you get tired, you can take the train back to Moscow.

cycling house trips

For the uninitiated, there are plenty of suitable roads around Moscow. The entire Moscow region is dotted with railway lines, so it is not necessary to make a circular route. You can take an intercity train to one station and back from another. There are many convenient route options around most Russian cities. You can make your own route, or take the advice of experienced travelers and use an already prepared route map.

Two-day trips in Russia

If you can travel 60-70 km per day, it’s no problem and you’ll be able to ride for two days. First of all, you need to solve your overnight problem: will you stay in a hotel, borrow a private house or pitch your own tent? Be sure to take the weather into account and take extra things that will keep you warm or heated.

When choosing your route, add some “hills” on the way, but not too steep.

Keep an eye on your bike. Ideally, it should be carefully checked and tested two days before departure; if you don’t know much about bike parts, you should have a full “car check” at a good mechanic’s shop to remove all faults in time.

Route: ride along Nizhny Novgorod and rest on the Volga

Distance: 140 km

This is a self-guided route with picturesque Volga forests, where you will have to pitch a tent on the road overnight. You don’t have to think about the schedule of electric trains or buses, even if you are delayed on the way, don’t worry.

From Nizhny Novgorod, you will pass through the town of Bor (you can cross the Volga by cable car). Next, head to Ivanovskoye. On the way, note the unique, interlocking bi-level railroad: it is no longer in use, but the original structure is still there. Then go in the direction of Yurasovo, where you will turn to Maloye Utkino, then to Beryozovka, to Vypolzovo, then to the Volga River, to Apraksino, passing through the hill fortress with its ancient earthen embankment. Hillfort, which retains its ancient earthen berm.

cycling house trips

After that, follow Orlovo, Belkino, Yamnovo, Zavrazhnoye, Selishi. After passing through Zhukovka, you can go straight through the forest to the bank of the Volga River and find a place to pitch your tent.

The next day, go in the direction of Pumra, then through Vagankovo, Orekhovo, Markovo, turn left at Matveyevka, go to Vatoma, then through Put’kovo and back to the banks of the Volga, then to the town of Pol, and then to Nizhny Novgorod.

There are many suitable two-day rides in the Volga Valley, around the Voronezh region, around the cities along the Golden Ring and in the Crimean steppe.

Multi-day rides in Russia

Riding for several days in a row is a very serious matter and you need to be physically prepared. For the first time, choose a route that is not too difficult and not extreme, because riding a few days in a row is not at all the same as riding 100 km in a week. Please estimate that it is more comfortable to travel 70-80 km per day on the plains and with much less hills.

Check to see if there are any settlements along the way – it depends on whether you’ll be carrying a lot of food, or if you can buy all your food along the way. But whenever and wherever you go, make sure you have drinking water on you. Please do not forget to constantly replenish your supplies and have an emergency reserve – about 1.5 liters of water per person.

Route: “Crimean coast: from Kerch to Alushta”

Distance: 270 km , 5-7 days

We have intentionally divided the trip on this route into several days, as it depends a lot on your fitness and desire to visit the sights – which will be seen on the way, and quite a lot of them. There will be some mountain passes – if you feel tired as you pass them, it is always possible to set up camp early and prepare for an overnight stay. Almost the entire road runs along the coastline. If you don’t want to pitch a tent, you can easily find a place to spend the night in the resort.

Get off the ferry to Kerch and head directly to the Feodossia steppe. Pass through the town of Ordzhonikidze and head to Koktebel. Be prepared for a long and tiring uphill climb. If you don’t want to tire yourself out that much, then sacrifice some of the scenic views and take a different route – along the Simferopol highway.

From Koktebeli there is a difficult mountain road leading to Sudak. The strongest will can cycle to the town of “Novyi Svit” in one day, while the rest of the people should go to the village of Morske and then to Alushta via Rybache and Malorichens’ke. From Alushta, you can take a bicycle and a trolleybus to Simferopol, from where you can return by plane or return to Kerch by bus or taxi.

Tour champion Vingegaard still hopes to be in ‘top shape’ for this year’s race after bad crash

PARIS (AP) — Two-time defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard is back on his bike, just a month after a bad crash that left him several broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

And the Danish rider is still hoping to compete at this year’s Tour, which starts in seven weeks.

“I feel good, it’s improving day by day,” Vingegaard said in a video released by his team, Visma–Lease a Bike. “I still have some things to recover from, but it’s going better and better. Of course I hope to be there at the start of the Tour de France. We don’t know exactly how my shape and how my recovery will go, but I will do everything I can to get there in my top shape.”

Vingegaard was hospitalized in Spain last month following the crash that involved other top riders during a chaotic Tour of the Basque Country. He also sustained a broken collarbone and a pulmonary contusion during the accident, which came less than three months before the start of the Tour de France on June 29.

He was back in the saddle on Tuesday.

“This is the first time back on the bike for me riding outside, and it’s really nice to finally be able to ride like normal again,” Vingegaard said in the video, standing by his bicycle. “Finally to be able to ride on the road is really amazing and I’m really looking forward to taking the next steps.”

Before the crash, Vingegaard had been considered one of the top favorites at the Tour again alongside his rival Tadej Pogacar, who is aiming for a Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double this year.

Vingegaard was hardly moving when he was put into an ambulance wearing an oxygen mask and neck brace after the crash with less than 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) remaining in the stage. The pileup also took out Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel, along with several other riders, many of whom needed hospital treatment.
