Dali Museum Spain from Barcelona: How to Plan an Epic Day Trip

the outside of the dali museum barcelona figueres

Getting to the Dali Museum Spain from Barcelona unfortunately requires a bit more planning than hopping on the metro.

In fact, contrary to popular belief, this isn’t a Barcelona Museum – it’s up the coast in a town called Figueres.

So, let me show you how to get to Salvador Dali Museum from Barcelona, without the hassle.

barcelona to figueres map

Where is the Salvador Dalì Museum in Barcelona?

As I mentioned up top, the Dali Museum is located approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) northeast of Barcelona , in the city of Figueres.

Figueres is accessible from Barcelona by train, car, or bus, making it a popular day trip destination .

The journey from Barcelona to Figueres takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by train or car .

Don’t have a car or not willing to brave multiple buses or trains?

Luckily, there is an all inclusive package that will take you there quickly, cheaply, and without hassle.

How to Get to Dalí Museum in Figueres from Barcelona

Again, getting to the Dali Museum from Barcelona is quite the hassle without a car .

For that reason, I’m going to start with the most convenient option for a day trip to the Dali Museum:

It’s via all-inclusive tour packages that take you from Barcelona right to the museum.

Looking for a more independent route? Feel free to skip ahead for the train, bus and car options.

Dali Museum Tours from Barcelona: Best Value Package

In my opinion, the best way to get to the Dali Museum from Barcelona is via this all-in-one package that costs just 59.00€ – it actually works out cheaper than the train in the end.

This bus package allows you to explore the historic wonders of medieval Girona (Game of Thrones was shot here), where you can marvel at the Cathedral , and gaze at the vibrant houses lining the Onyar River.

Then you’ll proceed to the Dali Museum in Figueres. Here, you’ll see the museum’s eye-catching, egg-adorned facade and delve into its extensive collection of Dalí’s paintings, sculptures, and jewelry .

You can book free-cancellation, no money down tickets using the button below:

You can also get a small group version with hotel pickup using this button:

train from reus airport to barcelona city centre

Train from Barcelona to the Dali Museum Spain

The train from Barcelona to the Dalì Museum takes between 1 hour and 40 minutes (MD) and 2 hours and 20 minutes (Regional). From the Figueres train station to the Theatre Museum is about a 12-minute walk.

You can check Renfe train schedules by selecting “Barcelona (Todas)” to “Figueres.”

To get this train, you’ll need to board at either  Estaciò de Sants or Barcelona El Clot-Arago .

One-way tickets vary between €12.00 and €18.00 depending on the train.

Again you’re looking at up to 36.00€ return for the train – in adding the 21.00€ entrance this makes the cost of getting a no-hassle tour package (plus Girona) all the more valuable.

Barcelona to Dali Museum Figueres by Bus

This is how I planned my first day trip to the Dali Museum from Barcelona: taking the bus from the Estaciò del Norte , just a stone’s throw from Arc de Triumf metro and Ciutadella Park .

This Sagales-run bus runs 5-6 times daily and takes two and a half hours .

Check the Barcelona-Figueres bus schedule online on the Sagales website .

The bus can either drop you off at the Figueres train station (a 12-minute walk) or right at the Salvador Dalì Museum.

Again, since a one-way bus ticket to Figueres costs €20.00 , it’s a much better deal to get the package tickets above.

Driving From Barcelona to Figueres by Car

This is a great option if you’re considering a city escape up the majestic Costa Brava .

Take Highway P7 north out of Barcelona towards La Jonquera and exit at Figueres or Nacional II (Barcelona-França).

The car journey is about 140 km (85 miles). From here, head to the centre of the city or trust your GPS.

The exact address is Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí, 5, 17600 Figueres, Girona, Spain.

ETA: an hour and thirty minutes .

Cost:  €20.00-€25.00 in gas + car rental price.

For the best car rental prices, my readers have had great experiences using Rentalcars.com .

Salvador Dalì Museum Tickets

Not getting a tour of the Dali Museum from Barcelona in a convenient package?

Even though you’re rolling up independently, it’s still highly recommended to book your basic entrance tickets in advance .

In short, the museum tends to sell out in high season – and I’ve heard of people travelling all that way only to be turned away.

These general admission tickets also include a viewing of Dalì’s jewelry collection .

The prices are as follows:

  • Adults: €21.00.
  • Children: free for children under 9 years old.

Dalí Museum Barcelona

Imagine attending your favourite theatre as a young boy and eventually showing your first art exhibition there.

But Dali didn’t stop there.

In fact, he converted it into his very own museum in 1974 before finally being buried in a crypt under the stage.

That was the force that was Salvador Dalí.

dali museum tours from barcelona

This incredible theatre-turned-museum was actually destroyed by fire during the Spanish Civil War. It was then that Dalí chose to house the largest collection of his works there, saying:

“I want my museum to be a single block, a  great surrealist object  where the people who come to see it will leave with the sensation of having had a theatrical dream .”

It’s now the largest surrealist object in the world and one of the top day trips from Barcelona .

What to See at the Dali Museum Near Barcelona

Dalí was involved in its construction, converting every detail of the museum into a work of art.

The building facade, patio, rooms, stairs and furniture all recall surrealist Dalì – look for the face of Mae West in his anamorphic living room installation .

Among the works of art housed by the Dalì Museum Figueres, you’ll find pieces spanning every decade of his career:

  • Port Alguer (1924).
  • The Spectre of Sex-Appeal (1932).
  • Portrait of Gala with Two Chops Balanced on Her Shoulder (1933).
  • Soft Self-Portrait with Grilled Bacon (1941).
  • Galarina (1944-45).
  • The Basket of Bread (1945).
  • Galatea of the Spheres (1952).

You’ll also get mechanical devices, sculptures, optical illusions, nude figurines, three-dimensional collages, and an installation inside an automobile inspired by Rainy Taxi .

It’s a fascinating museum much appreciated by visitors who have made the Dalì Theatre Museum Figueres the second most visited museum in Spain after the Prado in Madrid .

History of the Dalí Theater Museum

Who was salvador dalí, how to get there from barcelona.

dali museum tours from barcelona

The Dalí Theater Museum  is the most important museum dedicated to the catalan surrealist artist Salvador Dalí .

Located in his hometown of Figueres, it's one of the most popular day trips from Barcelona. Immerse yourself in the unique universe of Dalí visiting this one-of-a-kind exhibition.

Dalí Theater Museum

After Dalí was asked to donate a painting to his native town of Figueres, he agreed to do so but on a much bigger scale.

He took the former Figueres Theater, and transformed it into his very personal museum . His interest in constructing this museum had many reasons, as he said in his own words:

The resulting work is far from what you'd get at a conventional museum . Every room has a very distinct personality. There is everything from paintings, drawings and sculpture to photographs, engravings and holograms.

There are very interesting artistic installations, such as the Wind Palace Room, the Rainy Cadillac and the Mae West Room.

A considerable part of Dalí's legacy was distributed between this museum and the Reina Sofía in Madrid , so if you're looking for some of his best paintings, you won't be dissappointed .

Dalí's crypt lies in one of the lower levels of the museum and can also be visited.

Dalí Theater Museum

Salvador Dalí is a very important figure in the artistic scenario of Catalonia, and one the most universal Spanish artists. He was pivotal in the development of surrealism and his legacy has traspassed generations.

Much of his work might be scattered around the globe, but Catalonia is the only place where you can witness the places he lived and worked.

Enjoy a day trip to Figueres and the Dalí Theater Museum in a  full day guided tour with transport from Barcelona . It also includes a guided tour through the streets of Girona.

Girona Old Town Walking Tour

view of front stairs, entrance and facade of Girona cathedral

Following your immersive experience at the Dalí Theatre-Museum, a picturesque 40-minute drive with your personal chauffeur leads you to the captivating city of Girona. Renowned for its historic charm, Girona is an assemblage of architectural treasures, each echoing a different era of its rich past.

Commence your guided walking tour along the serene Onyar River, famous for its colorful riverfront houses that reflect brilliantly on the water, creating an iconic postcard view of Girona. As you stroll, you’ll observe a blend of architectural styles, from Gothic to Art Nouveau, illustrating the city’s diverse cultural influences over centuries.

Next, ascend the ancient Roman walls, or “Passeig de la Muralla,” that once served as the city’s defensive ramparts. From atop these stone guardians, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the city’s spires, rooftops, and beyond to the rolling green hills. Feel the aura of bygone eras as you tread along these ancient paths, preserved and intertwined with the city’s modern rhythms.

Venturing further into the heart of the Old Town, or Barri Vell, step back in time within its narrow, winding, cobblestone streets. A striking highlight here is the majestic Girona Cathedral, an architectural marvel that boasts the world’s widest Gothic nave. This 11th-century edifice, crowning a grand staircase, stands as a testament to Girona’s religious and architectural heritage.

The tour would be incomplete without visiting the Jewish Quarter, one of the best-preserved in Europe. Here, you’ll wander through a labyrinth of narrow streets and courtyards that echo tales of the thriving Jewish community that once resided here.

This guided tour through Girona’s Old Town is not just about visiting a city; it’s about experiencing the layers of history, culture, and architectural splendor that Girona effortlessly weaves together.

Besalù Medieval Village

Old medieval Romanesque bridge Besalu over the river Fluvia in Girona.

From Girona, your journey continues to the medieval gem of Besalù, a quaint village that takes you back to the Middle Ages. Upon arrival, your first encounter is with the iconic drawbridge entrance. As you traverse this bridge, under the imposing portcullis, you leave the modern world behind and step into a beautifully preserved vestige of history.

This private tour allows you to navigate the village’s arch-lined streets and take in the rustic charm of its stone houses, Gothic windows, and historic churches. Each corner of Besalù tells a story, a testament to the rich tapestry of cultures that have left their imprint on this place.

One of the tour’s key highlights is the 12th-century Jewish bath, or ‘Mikveh,’ a unique architectural relic from the Jewish community that once thrived here. Delve deeper into the local history by visiting the remnants of a medieval synagogue, a rare survivor bearing silent witness to centuries of change.

Your guide will enlighten you on the historical and cultural significance of these sites, helping you fully appreciate the depth and complexity of Besalù’s heritage. Every stone and structure here holds a story; every street echoes with tales of the past.

After a day steeped in exploration and discovery, your private chauffeur awaits to provide a comfortable and relaxing transfer back to Barcelona.

Day Trip to the Dali Museum from Barcelona (What You Need to Know!)

Wondering how to plan a day trip to the Dali Museum from Barcelona?  This guide covers how to get to the Dali Museum and what you need to know to plan your visit !

Barcelona is a beautiful city filled with architecture, history and art — which can be explored within the city or on nearby day trips. If you’re an art enthusiast and interested in checking out some of Salvador Dali’s famous works, then a visit to the Dali Museum in Figueres is a must.

Here’s how to plan a day trip to the Dali Museum from Barcelona!

Portraits of Salvador Dali

About Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a renowned Spanish surrealist artist who is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He was born in Figueres, Spain, and spent much of his childhood in the seaside town of Cadaqués, where his parents owned a summer home.

Throughout his career, Dali created a vast body of work, including paintings, sculptures, and films. His paintings are characterized by their highly detailed, dreamlike imagery and use of vibrant colors.

Some of his most famous works include “The Persistence of Memory,” which features the famous melting clocks that he became known for, and “The Elephants,” which portrays elephants with impossibly long, spindly legs.

Dali was also known for his eccentric personality and flamboyant public appearances. He often wore eclectic clothing and loved to style his distinctive mustache in an upward-pointing curl.

Dali died in Figueres in 1989 at the age of 84. Today, his works can be seen in museums and galleries around the world, and he remains an influential figure in the art world.

How to Get to the Dali Museum

The Dali Museum is located in the town of Figueres, which is about 90 miles northeast of Barcelona. And if you’re wondering how to take a day trip to the Dali Museum from Barcelona, there are several ways you can get there.

By Train: You can take the train from  Barcelona-Sants t o  Figueres   Vilafant , and the trains run about every 4 hours. Train tickets cost between €13 and €40 and the journey takes about 55 min.  And, from the Figueres Vilafant train station, the walk to the Dali Museum is just 5 minutes!

By Car: Driving to the Dali Museum is pretty straightforward and most of the journey takes you along the highway AP-7.  The total drive time is just 1.5 hours!  We rented our car at the Barcelona Airport and found the drive to be very easy.

Planning Your Visit to the Dali Museum

To make your visit to the museum as smooth as possible, there are a couple of things you can do in advance.

Plan Your Itinerary: The Dali Museum is open daily (except for Mondays) from 9:30am to 6:00pm. You should plan to spend at least 2-3 hours exploring the museum.

Purchase tickets: Tickets can be purchased online via the museum’s website and cost €17 for adults.  Note that you’ll need to select a date and time slot (they are every 15 minutes!). And, it’s best to purchase your tickets in advance to avoid long lines at the ticket office!

Parking: There is a paid parking lot next to the museum that’s very convenient.  It was quite busy when we went but we eventually found a spot — just make sure to leave some time for parking before your ticket time slot!

Grand Hall of the Dali Theatre Museum in Figueres

About the Dali Museum

The Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres is a museum dedicated to the life and work of Salvador Dali and was actually designed by Dali himself.

The museum is housed in the former Municipal Theatre of Figueres, which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Dali worked on the renovation and design of the building for over a decade, transforming it into a surreal and fantastical space that reflects his artistic vision and unique style.

The Dali Theatre Museum contains one of the most extensive collections of Dali’s work, including paintings, sculptures, and installations. The exhibits are arranged thematically, showcasing Dali’s evolution as an artist and his many creative obsessions, such as his fascination with the human psyche and his interest in science and technology.

Some of the most notable works on display at the museum include “The Mae West Room,” a surreal installation that recreates the famous actress’s face as a room; “The Persistence of Memory,” featuring his iconic melting clocks and “The Hallucinogenic Toreador,” a large-scale painting that features many of Dali’s signature motifs.

And, did you know that Figures is also Dali’s final resting place?  Dali is buried in a crypt inside of the museum!

I also enjoyed visiting the “Dali Jewels” exhibit at the museum which showcases precious gems and jewelry that he designed throughout his life. They were incredibly stunning!

Explore Figueres

Aside from the museum, the charming town of Figueres is worth exploring as well.

Figueres has a beautiful old town center with narrow streets and colorful buildings. You can take a stroll through the town, visit the town hall, and check out the many cafes and restaurants.

We stopped at Bon Profit Figueres for a bite — just a few minutes from the museum — and enjoyed dining al fresco on their patio! Another option would be to grab lunch at the Hotel Duran restaurant which was Dali’s favorite places to dine.

Or are you a total foodie and love fine dining experiences? Only 30 minutes away is El Celler de Can Roca , which has often been voted one of the top restaurants in the world and boasts three Michelin stars!

Where to Stay in Figueres

Looking for the best hotels in Figueres? Here are my top picks!

Hotel Pirineos : Located just a short walk from the museum, Hotel Pirineos is located in the center of Figueres and features comfortable rooms.

The Museum Apartments : This apartment-style lodging it literally next to the Dali Museum so you can’t really get much closer! Plus, there’s an outdoor terrace looking over the museum and city.

Ibis Styles Figueres Ronda : This modern style hotel is a great place for an overnight since it features parking, a short walk into town, and a delicious breakfast.

Overall, the Dali Theatre-Museum is a must-visit destination for art lovers or anyone interested in the life and work of Salvador Dali.  Plus, a day trip to the Dali museum is definitely doable from Barcelona and worth the effort!

Visiting the Theatre-Museum Dalí: Barcelona Day Trip

*This site contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission when you buy. See my full disclosure .

One of the most visited museums in Spain, the Teatro-Museu Dali is a bizarre, immersive journey through Salvador Dalí’s artistic and personal life. And “bizarre” barely describes it! When Dalí helped plan the museum in 1974, he wanted the spectator to experience surrealism through the visit. It is definitely surreal! It’s also magical, outrageous, and even disturbing. After my visit, I felt puzzled by a few pieces – I’d wished I’d known more about Dalí before my visit! So, read on to learn what to know beforehand ,  what to expect , and how to prepare before visiting the Dalí Theatre-Museum. Get the most out of your museum visit!

Table of Contents

Tips before visiting the Dalí Theater-Museum

– Guided tours by the Museum are not  available. Audioguides are not available either. Dalí wanted the spectator to have his own experience of the surreal. This is why you should study up on Dalí before you go or buy an informative book. This is a book that was written by Dalí’s friend and former director of the museum, Antoni Pitxot. It’s probably the most informative book on the works and history behind the museum

– Kids will have a fun experience at the Dalí museum because many of the art pieces are interactive.

– Parts of the museum are hard to access because of stairs. Coming with a stroller or wheelchair may be a challenge.

Inside the Dalí Theatre-Museum

In 1973, Salvador Dalí, who was already world-famous, wanted to create a museum with his most renowned work. He chose the old municipal theatre of Figueres, his hometown. He became involved in planning the museum.

Inside the museum, you’ll realize Dalí wasn’t just a painter. He was a prolific multimedia artist. His art collections include drawings, sculptures, paintings, holograms, stereoscopes, photography, jewelry, and engravings, and more! The museum carries about 1,500 art pieces.

The self-curated museum is not organized in any thematic or chronological order because that’s how Dalí wanted it. We’re supposed to have a surrealist experience, remember? The rooms are numbered so that you can properly see all the 22 rooms without missing any pieces. (See an official brochure and a PDF of the museum map . Download it before you go! I don’t think they’ll be handing out any pamphlets in this post-Covid situation.

You get a taste of Dalí bizarro world from the outside of the museum. From Pujada de Castell street and Carrer Canigó, the building has pink walls, evenly covered with rolls of bread.  Bread has always been one of Dalí’s “oldest fetishist and obsessive subject matters”. It’s a staple in the Spanish pantry and, like art, it is always something to be devoured. You’ll also see the famous carbs in the famous painting from 1945, The Basket of Bread .

On the roof sit humongous eggs and Oscar-like statues. Eggs are also a common subject of his art, which represents new life, hope, and love. You’ll also see the egg repeated in his artwork like Eggs on the Plate (Without the Plate).

Plaça Gala-Salvador Dalí

Plaça Gala-Salvador Dalí, the square right outside the museum, has a number of sculptures showing his Dalí’s wide range of interests like science and Catalan philosophy. Below you can see the sculpture dedicated to Catalan philosopher Francesc Pujols . On the steps leading to Carrer de la Jonquera, Dalí’s sculpture pays homage to the brilliant scientist, Isaac Newton.

In the photo below, we also see the facade of the museum, which was completely rebuilt. It used to be the old Municipal Theater of Figueres. The theater burnt down after the Spanish Civil War.

The Courtyard

The courtyard used to be where the seating was in the old theatre. Waving Oscar-like statuettes look down below.

Below is the Taxi Plujós, or “ Rainy Taxi”, which showcases the real Cadillac that Dalí and Gala used when traveling in New York City. They also drove it from coast to coast. There were only six models of this Cadillac, and this model was given to Gala. (You can place a coin in the slot on the front right-hand wheel, and it will start to rain inside the taxi.) His inspiration for the rain? Dalí and Gala were looking for a taxi when in Verona, Italy. Dali said, “The chances are that it will rain inside the taxi, now that it’s stopped raining outside”.  Inside the taxi are a chauffeur and two mannequins in the back seat.

On top of the Cadillac is a sculpture by Ernst Fuchs. It’s one of a full-figured Queen Esther chained to a column of tires.

Below, Dalí created this incredible painting with an overbearing title: Gala Nude Looking at the Sea Which at 18 Metres Appears the President Lincoln.

Dalí was interested in perception, playing with the optical scales to create several images in one. Dalí also learned that if you step back, your depth of field flattens and you can recognize the face of Abraham Lincoln. (We recognize the image from a 5-dollar bill, but Dalí was inspired by researcher Leon Harmon’s pixelated image of the 5-dollar bill portrait.) But if you go closer, it’s clear you see an image of the Gala’s nude backside as she gazes outside a window. It’s fascinating. Read more about it here.

The  Sala de Peixateries  (Fishmongers’ Hall)

This room has oil paintings and a very interesting stereoscope that adults and kids alike will love. You sit down and look at two images. A new image is created, in your mind, based on your vantage point. There also a few other optical games around the museum.

Pictured below is Retrat de Picasso, an unbecoming portrait of Pablo Picasso, whom he admired. The two Spanish artists clashed on political views. And Dalí even called Picasso, “a destroyer of art”. Nevertheless, the two famous artists reconvened later in life.

Gala Dalí: his wife, muse, and business manager

Below is a painting called  Dalí Seen from the Back Painting Gala from the Back Eternalized by Six Virtual Corneas Provisionally Reflected by Six Real Mirrors.

Interesting story. Dalí met Gala while she was visiting Spain with her then-husband, poet Paul Éluard. She left him to be with Dalí. She moved in with Dali and was often the subject of his paintings. Among many accounts, Gala was not a nice person and many men in the surrealist group despised her. (Read this interview with Dalí’s former assistant on his thoughts on working with the couple.) To be honest, the more I read into her life, the more confused I got whether she was truly a muse or just misunderstood. Nevertheless, she was a forward-thinking artist and performer who catapulted Dalí into fame and fortune. Without her, surely, he would not have the same influence that he does today!

Dali Teatre-Museu

Mae West Room

This is brilliant! The Mae West room has a furniture installation of a red sofa, paintings of eyes, and a double fireplace for a nose. You climb up a set of stairs, and from your vantage point, they’re organized into the face of famous Mae West. Also, note that the “curtains” is a hair installation was created by the famous hairdresser, Lluís Llongueras. In fact, the hair started to deteriorate after 25 years of the original installation. Llongueras was asked to replace the beautiful golden hair.

Ms. West was a scandalous yet talented actress, singer, and comedian, who expressed sexual independence, starting around the 30s. Her celebrity was reflective of Dalí’s own public persona. She was actually quite powerful in Hollywood!

Palau del Vent (Wind Palace Ceiling)

In the room of the Palau del Vent, a ceiling painting is based on the poem by Joan Maragall, “L’Empordà”, a region of Catalonia. This painting represents a unique perspective of Salvador Dalí and his wife, Gala, reaching for the heavens. We can also see elephants with thin insect legs and silhouettes of the Spanish royal couple. You also see open, empty drawers in his Dalí’s body, a common symbol of a sort of emptying or emptiness of oneself.

Below, a tapestry of the Persistence of Memory, shows the melting pocket watches. The painting was originally an oil painting on canvas currently on display at the MOMA in New York City.  This tapestry hangs over a baroque bed (which was not  Dalí’s). Below it in the corner is a golden orangutan skeleton staring from a corner of the room.

Dalí says that the clocks represent the “hardness” and “softness” of time. Time has no function in the unconscious world. Without time, we can enjoy the present. He thought of the idea of melting watches when watching Camembert cheese melt in the sun. In the background of the painting is the Catalonian landscape around the Cap de Creus and Roses.

The Crypt of Dalí

In another part of the theatre-museum is the crypt of Dalí.  You can visit this section and pay homage to the artist himself. The room is dark and unassuming, but the plate reads the words “Marqués de Dalí de Púbol”, a noble title given to him by King Juan Carlos in 1982. It seems many people seemed to miss this tiny room.

Dalí exhibition is next door from the Dalí Theatre-Museum called Dalí Joies (Dalí Jewels). It’s right next to the museum, but it’s included in your visit. They include a gorgeous collection of precious stone and gold jewelry.

How far is the Dalí Museum from Barcelona?

The Dali Museum is located north of Barcelona in Figueres in the province of Girona. It’s about  143 km from Barcelona.

How long does the Dalí Museum take?

It takes a minimum of 1.5 hours to visit the Dalí Museum. That’s my opinion, though. I could probably spend a good three hours to really take it in!

Is the Dali Theatre-Museum worth visiting?

Yes! People who find museums to be boring will not be bored here. If you are coming on a day trip from Barcelona, it does take 2-3 hours to arrive by train (see Transportation tips below). So, unless you are an art fanatic, it may not be worth it. The town of Figueres is also very residential, so there is nothing very interesting – aside from a few art installations sprinkled throughout.

How to get to the Dalí Theatre-Museum from Barcelona

From Barcelona, the fastest way to arrive is by taking the high-speed train, called the AVE. The trip is between 2-3 hours, depending on departure times. Visit the RENFE website for details.

By bus, it takes about 3 hours, so it might not be worth it if you want to visit for the day. The bus leaves from Estació del Nord in Barcelona. It takes you directly to the museum. See the private bus schedule on the Sagalés website .

You can arrive by car, which is 140 km, and takes about 1.5 hours. Compare lowest car rental rates on Auto Europe .

Walk around this small town, and you’ll see other cool Dali-esque installations. Also, if you have kids (or not), the Museu del Juguines also has a nice selection of vintage toys and books.

Useful and interesting facts about Dalí

  • Salvador Dalí was born on May 11, 1904. He was given the name Salvador after his brother, who had passed away before him. He thought he was the reincarnation of his brother. Enter his obsession with the egg, a symbol commonly found in his art!
  • In 1929, he met Gala, an intelligent and business-minded Russian woman . She became his wife, muse, and business manager. She worked with gallerists, negotiated contracts, and managed finances. She played a hugely significant role in his success because she knew the  power of self-promotion.
  • The couple moved to New York City in 1940. Dalí gradually because famous in the US for his outlandish art and character. He was also commissioned to create art and design furniture, jewelry , and paintings . He was on the cover of Time magazine and even worked with Walt Disney on a short film. Yet, people thought Dalí’s peculiar behavior was due to him being insane or because he was on drugs.
  • As Dalí gained fame and notoriety in the United States, he was a laughingstock amongst his peers. French poet, Andrê Bretón, a colleague in his surrealist circle of friends, gave Dalí the nickname “Avida Dollars” (or “avid dollars”), an anagram for his name. Dalí didn’t seem to mind.
  • After the death of Gala, he was devastated. Dalí isolated himself at the Púbol Castle, where Gala lived. (Yes, they lived separately sometimes. They had a bizarre relationship.) He nearly died in a fire nearby and moved to the Torre Galatea at the museum, where he was cared for by nurses. He died of heart failure there in 1989 at the age of 84. And he’s buried in the crypt of the museum !
  • Dalí endured attacks for his flagrant commercialism, but he was nevertheless still held as one of the most notable pop culture figures of his time. He was also considered a joke figure – and not a genius. Today, revise him as a 20th-century trailblazer who still intrigues and shocks the public.

Visiting Salvador Dalí’s memorable museum for the outlandish art that runs along the theme of one man’s extraordinary life. It’s an extension of himself and a comprehensive and total giving of himself and his art! The more I learn about Dalí and Gala, the more I’m intrigued. I genuinely wonder what kind of mental illnesses he suffered personality disorders and psychotic illnesses.

Salvador Dali locations around Barcelona

Catalonia, the region around Barcelona, was home to one of the most fascinating, excentric and controversial Spanish artists – Salvador Dali. During my recent trip to that area, I wanted to learn more about the famous Surrealist painter, so I did some research about him and visited some of the Salvador Dali locations around Barcelona.

This post contains some affiliate links. Read our  Privacy Policy  for more info.

Barcelona was home to some world-famous artists, and two that are best known are Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. They both lived at some point in Barcelona, and their paintings could be seen in the city museums.

However, Salvador Dali was born in Catalonia in a village called Figueres. He spent his childhood there and later in his life created some of his masterpieces in that region, too. Many locations linked to Salvador Dali’s life and work could still be found close to Barcelona. So, if you are interested in the life and work of that artist, taking a day trip from Barcelona to visit those places could be a great thing to do.

Who was Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali selfportrait

Salvador Dali is one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. He is also one of the most famous Surrealist painters. Although he was one of the movement’s leaders, he often conflicted with its other members. So, in the end, he was expelled from the group.

The difference between the Surrealists and me is that I am a Surrealist. Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali was born in the small town of Figueres, located close to the Spanish border with France . His artistic talent was discovered very early. After finishing high school, he enrolled at the Art Academy in Madrid. He didn’t stay there for long because he started a protest against his professors, whom he considered mediocre artists. That resulted in him being expelled from the Academy.

Salvador Dali selfportrait

Shortly after that, Dali travelled to Paris , where he met one of his role models Pablo Picasso and visited the Louvre Museum . He also met some contemporary artists, especially members of the DADA movement and the Surrealist group. This is also where he met his future muse and wife, Gala. She was ten years older than him and married to the Surrealist poet Paul Eluard. However, the couple soon fell in love and stayed together their whole life.

The themes of Dali’s artworks were dreams, science (especially nuclear energy), classical art, religion and people close to him. Although he is mainly known for his paintings today, he was also a filmmaker, graphic designer, sculptor and writer. During the 1940s, while living in the US, he worked with Alfred Hitchcock and Walt Disney on some of their films. He also made a logo for Chupa Chups.

Dali and Gala on a painting

Dali was pretty successful very early in his career. When only 32 years old, he was already featured on the cover of the Time Magazine. Dali was a celebrity in a true sense of that word during his lifetime. And he was a friend with some famous people of his time, like Federico Garcia Lorca, Coco Chanel, etc.

Although a great artist, his private life is controversial. After his return to Spain from the US in 1948, he supported the Francoist regime. Even before that, during the 1930s, he didn’t want to publicly denounce Fascism. That was the ultimate reason for him being expelled from the Surrealism movement. Other artists thought he was mainly motivated by money in his work. So, Andre Breton, a co-founder and one of the leaders of Surrealism, gave him the nickname ‘Avida Dollars’, which was made as an anagram of his name, meaning ‘avid for dollars’.

Although he got depressed after his wife Gala died in 1982, he continued creating art almost until his death seven years later.

Where to see Dali’s paintings in Barcelona

Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya

Dali had his first exhibition in Dalmau Gallery in Barcelona in 1925. But, not many of his artworks are left in that city today. You can see a few of his paintings at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona .

However, there are a few locations linked to Salvador Dali in Barcelona you can still visit today. He would stay in El Palace Hotel on his trips to the city. It still has a special room called the Salvador Dali Art suite where art lovers can stay.

He was also a regular at the restaurant called Via Veneto. You can see some of his photos in the restaurant on their website ( here is the link ).

Dali Theatre and Museum in Figueres

Salvador Dali Theatre museum in Figueres

Opened in 1974, Dali Theatre and Museum in Figueres is home to the most extensive collection of artworks made by the famous Surrealist artist. He started working on his museum in the 1960s, and it was the main focus of his work for the next fourteen years before it opened its doors to the public.

The museum is so unique because it was designed by the artist himself. The building has some of Dali’s recognisable symbols, such as eggs or bread rolls, on its exterior. The main exhibits at the museums are from Dali’s private collection. Some of the most exciting artworks you can see there are the Rainy Taxi, the Mae West Room and some of the well-known Gala portraits.

The museum is also where Salvador Dali is buried. There are some controversies around the locations of his grave. Dali and Gala planned to be buried together in their house in Pubol. That’s where Gala was buried and where her grave is today. But, shortly before his death, Dali apparently told the Figueres’ major he wanted to be buried in his museum instead. And that’s why his grave is there today.

Salvador Dali’s house in Portlligat is where the artist lived for over forty years. He first bought a small fisherman’s cottage in the 1930s. Later on, he purchased the nearby homes, enlargening his property.

Today, Salvador Dali’s House in Portlligat is a museum where you can see his former home, studio, and library.

The Gala Dali Castle in Pubol

Dala Gali castle in Pubol Spain

The Gala Dali Castle in Pubol is one of my favourite Salvador Dali locations around Barcelona. Located in the middle of the serene Spanish countryside, it is such an inspirational place.

In 1969, Dali bought his wife Gala a medieval castle. It wasn’t in great shape, so he repaired it and decorated it with his artwork and furniture. It was a tranquil romantic place where his wife Gala could relax and do her own things. Dali and Gala had an agreement, he could only visit the castle after her written invitation.

Today, the castle is a lovely museum where you can see some of Dali’s art. But also feel an atmosphere of the Dali couple’s everyday life.
