Itinerary  Details

(PD, Motel) We fly to Cairns where we are met by the coach and transferred to our motel. Note: Flights arriving after 6pm will have snack evening meal provided in the room.

(CB, RD, Motel) Travel along a spectacular coastline to the lush Daintree River, where we have a boat cruise then time for lunch at the resort town of Port Douglas. We return to Cairns for a free afternoon on the esplanade, with many cafés and restaurants, galleries, markets and stalls. It is a lovely coastal Queensland city. Note: Daintree cruise included.

(CB, MD, Motel) We head up the Atherton Tablelands to Mareeba then begin up “The Cape” to Lakeland and Cooktown. In June 1770, the local Aboriginal Guugu Yimithirr tribe cautiously watched the crippled Endeavour limp up the coast seeking a safe harbour after sustaining serious damage south of Cooktown.

(CB, RD, Motel) A full day in and around Cooktown including the Botanical Gardens and the James Cook Museum. Drive up Grassy Hill to the lighthouse lookout and wander the shores of the Endeavour River in the afternoon. Note: James Cook Museum entry included.

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) An early start through the Barrons Range to the Peninsula Development Road. Morning tea at the Split Rock Art Site, this Country contains a large and dramatic body of prehistoric rock paintings. Through Laura and Musgrave to Coen the largest inland town on The Cape. Over the Archer River to Weipa.

(CB, PD, Motel) Weipa began as a Presbyterian Mission to the Aboriginal people of the Cape and is now the largest settlement on the Cape due to a large bauxite deposit in the region now mined by Rio Tinto. We take an afternoon wildlife cruise exploring the Arafura Sea and Mission River. Note: Cruise included.

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) Heading north again we visit Fruit Bat Falls for a swim at one of far north QLDs most iconic watering holes. As the northern most tip of the country gets closer the journey becomes increasingly stunning. We travel through the Heathlands Resource Reserve and cross the Jardine River on the vehicle ferry to Bamaga settled by people from Saibai Island in Torres Strait, after Saibai Island was devastated by abnormally high tides.

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) Today is all about reaching the Cape. We take the final slow drive through thick forest to the Northern most point of Australia named by James Cook on 21 August 1770 in honour of Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany. We drive as far as we can but then have to walk out over the rocks to the tip. From there it is 160km to New Guinea across the Torres Strait. We return to Bamaga to celebrate reaching this iconic Australian location.

(CB, MD, Motel) From Bamaga we take the ferry to Thursday Island. TI is the administrative and commercial centre of the Torres Strait Islands set up in 1877. Since then TI has been a pearling centre and defence base during WWII. We tour the island including the WWII tunnels and emplacements. The afternoon is free before our final dinner. Note: Cruise to Thursday Island and Thursday Island Tour included.

(CB) We take the ferry to Horn Island for a short flight to Cairns to transfer to our homebound flights.

Camping in the Australian Outback is one of the great attractions of touring around the country. Over the years we have refined our processes and equipment to maximize the enjoyment of the camping experience.

Some camping is in the beauty of Australian bush and on other nights we use the facilities of caravan parks, National Parks or stations. Passengers are asked to assist to their capacity in teams to erect the campsite.

Tents are 210cm high and 270cm square at the base, fully floored with fly-screen sealed windows and doors. They are very simple to erect, simply four pegs, a pole in the middle and the tent is up.

Inside the tent sleeping is on suspension camp stretchers with a thin foam mattresses on top. It is recommended passengers bring a pillow and warm bottom sheet and sleeping bag or warm rug to sleep in. Sleeping bags can be hired when booking for $40 per tour per person. You can comfortably fit two friends into each tent, a single supplement is available for some extra space.

There is LED electric floodlighting of the area until after dinner is finished and packed away, we then enjoy the peace of the night bush. A torch is recommended.

Cape York Air Tours From Cooktown

Cape York breeds tough locals and a particular type of person lives in this remote outback unspoilt type of destination for a reason.

They are warm friendly and keen for a yarn with visitors and they are tough so tough that they can withstand the dry season and the green season and it does not seem to bother them.

They are free to live the way they like without society judging them and they can go hunting and fishing for their own survival without having to worry too much about local laws as there are no major shopping centres or grocery stores to provide packaged foods daily in this part of Australia.

Everything comes into Cape York either by aircraft or by ship.

Cape York is about 208,000 square kilometres and it is one of the only real wildernesses left in the world today.

Sir David Attenborough said this area also has the cleanest body of water in the world due to the lack of agricultural farming, industrial industries and lack of land clearing and degradation.

Everything is in balance in Cape York and that goes with the population and number of people that rely on its natural resources.

Cape York consists of low lying wetlands with amazing birdlife that migrate here annually and high rainforest clad mountainous regions which are home to pre-historic and rare wildlife.

There are river which still hold gold and huge waterfalls, deserted white sandy beaches and low lying savannah country.

Flying to Cape York for a day you will see it all and more so come along and join us on the trip of a lifetime from Cooktown we would just love to show you our Australia.

Travel Information

About cooktown.

A visit to Cooktown will have you immersed in rich historical, cultural and natural wonders. Discovered by Captain James Cook during his 1770 east coast voyage, Cooktown was once a bustling gold rush settlement and home to one of Queensland’s busiest ports.

The town itself sits upon the Great Barrier Reef and is surrounded by secluded beaches, lush tropical rainforest and mountain ranges.

Cooktown is reachable by a sealed road that extends 330km north of Cairns along Mulligan Highway. For those seeking a little more adventure, take a 1 day   4WD along Bloomfield Track from the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest or spend a few days exploring and immersing yourself in the region. Cooktown also has a regional airport and boasts an array of accommodation options suited to your holiday needs, spanning from budget motels to 4-star resorts.

Immerse yourself in the culture and history of Cooktown

  • A visit to James Cook Museum is an absolute must when visiting Cooktown. The 1889 historical building originally served as a convent and here you can explore the numerous exhibitions on offer, including the creepy crawly display!
  • Take a stroll through the historic Cooktown Cemetery to a gain a true insight into the town’s dense multicultural history, marvel at the Aboriginal art collage of Milibi Wall and discover the numerous galleries in town.
  • Each year, Cooktown plays host to the three-day Cooktown Discovery Festival that commemorates the landing of Captain Cook and his encounter with the local indigenous Guugu Yimithirr people. In 2020, the town will host a 48-day festival to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Cook's landing.

Outdoor adventures

  • Book a scenic flight to explore the sights of Cooktown or to spend the day on Lizard Island
  • From Cooktown board an air-conditioned aircraft for a day tour to the tip of Australia to see Cape York
  • Explore the monuments at the top of Grassy Hill Lookout and marvel at the stunning 360-degree view of the surrounding coastline and lush rainforest. From here, we highly recommend following the walking trail through to Cherry Tree Bay, one of the many secluded beaches in the area. Don’t forget to spot for Dolphins or Dugongs!
  • Cooktown’s Botanic Gardens are also well worth a visit. The gardens are home to Nature’s Powerhouse which acts as the town’s visitor information centre. The centre boasts numerous galleries, exhibitions and an on site café. Relax in the gardens, enjoy a picnic or follow the walking track to Finch Bay for a spot of fishing or simply to laze the day away on the white sands.
  • If you are seeking a more strenuous yet rewarding hike, Mount Cook offers a number of walking trails not for the faint-hearted. You will need a day to venture along many of these hikes but expect to be rewarded with fantastic views of the mountain ranges and Great Barrier Reef.
  • If fishing is on your holiday to do list then you’ve come to the right place. Cooktown River and the many off shore reefs offer world class fishing well known for Barramundi, Coral Trout and if you are lucky, the infamous Black Marlin.
  • In town, Fisherman’s Wharf is a popular local spot with a number of charters and boat hire options available. The wharf is also a great place to watch the sun set over the Wild North.

A day with Silverswift is all about being in the water and experiencing the magical underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef. It’s exciting, exotic and breathtaking!

With our roaming permits and remote sites, you’ll be able to snorkel three uniquely different and ecologically diverse reef sites, each chosen to suit the day’s conditions. As coral relies on sunlight for growth, some of the best snorkelling is in the shallow areas around the reef top.

With a guided snorkel tour included, snorkel briefs at each reef site and lifeguard snorkel officers supervising, you’ll be able to explore the underwater delights in complete safety. Access to the water is so easy with Silverswift’s large submerged platforms from the back decks.

If you haven’t snorkelled before, that’s ok! Our crew will be on hand to give you instruction but we do recommend the ability to swim and fairly good fitness as snorkelling can be a strenuous activity. Flotation devices and buoyancy vests are available on board if needed. Prescription masks are also available at no extra cost.

To learn more about the marine life around you, make sure you join the guided snorkel tour, as the marine interpreter guides you over shallow coral gardens, pointing out fish and marine life, corals and areas of interest along the way.

It is a wonderful, exciting and indeed memorable experience to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef.

Where else but Cape York can you stand on the tip of Australia, discover one of the world’s oldest rainforests in the world and travel on roads few even dare to tread? Just because Australia’s last frontier is calling, doesn’t mean you need to travel it alone.

For the adventure of a lifetime, without any of the ‘going solo’ stress, join one of these guided Cape York tours.

The tip of Australia, Cape York, needs very little introduction for those who live and breathe rugged adventure. It’s big, it’s wild and it’s ripe for exploring – but it also needs serious preparation if you’re thinking of driving it solo. While it’s long been said a sense of adventure is the best packing essential for the northern neck of Australia, if you opt for an all-inclusive guided tour, aside from your clothes, there’s actually not that much more to take.

Save the hours of detailed planning, itinerary coordinating, and stress of driving and let a Cape York tour take care of the rest. All that’s left to do is sit back and watch the landscape ebb and flow between cattle stations, World Heritage-listed rainforest, wetlands, towering termite mounds and pristine beaches to name a few.

Fruit Bat Falls Cape York

Fruit Bat Falls, Apudthama National Park (Jardine River)

Explore the natural colour contrasts of Cape York with Cockatours , who lead a 15-day camping and 4WD expedition to the tip. With an itinerary designed to ensure your sightseeing is savoured rather than skulled, Cockatours will have you exploring the best of Cape York’s landscape, Indigenous history and seriously wild, wildlife (think: crocodiles and carnivorous plants).

With three Cape York tours to choose from, including one that’s entirely dedicated to those under 45 years of age, you’ll want to book in fast because they’ve sold out the last three years running. Led by an ecologist who specialises in Cape York, this is an all-inclusive trip where you’ll be immersed day and night (read: camping) amongst the iconic landscape.

With privacy on your side, you can expect to tick off your Cape York bucket list, the tip of Australia, Old Telegraph Track, Thursday Island and Daintree Rainforest – without compromising the serenity with even so much as the crowds from your own tour bus. The premise of this tour is built around flexibility – to ensure you are exploring the real Cape York – a destination famous for being off the beaten tourist track.

You’ll be given the keys to a ‘beast’, a Nissan GU Patrol, which have been workshopped for what Cape York’s tracks throw at you – river crossings, vertical drops and corrugations that show you what suspension is all about. Put tyres to the not-so tarmac of some of Cape York’s toughest tracks, including Old Telegraph Track, Frenchman’s Track, the 5 Beaches Track and Bloomfield Track. Your experienced hosts will take care of most things, including all your camping equipment across their tour which runs in a nine-day fly/drive combination or 16-day all-drive itinerary.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to
