School Trips to The North West
About the north west.
There are some lovely, vibrant cities to visit in the North West, with a range of exciting visits. For art and music lovers, Liverpool is the place to go. It has more museums and galleries than anywhere outside of London and it is of course home to the wonderful Beatles!
Or head to the thriving cultural city of Manchester – although it may have been built on the heavy industry of the Industrial Revolution, it has since re-invented itself as a world capital of arts. If it’s history that takes your fancy, pay a visit to the walled city of Chester, which boasts the largest stone-built Roman Amphitheatre in Britain.
These are all fantastic locations for a diverse trip with lots of great opportunities. You could also combine lots of these visits to fully explore the region so do talk to us about how we can tailor your itinerary to just how you want it!

Anglo Saxons & Vikings
Explore the turbulent world of the Anglo Saxons and Vikings in 10 th Century AD in this exciting, hands-on workshop. Arrive at our settlement just after a Viking raid has taken place and see the effects it has had on the Anglo Saxon community. Our historical characters will help you examine what life was like for these two groups of people; considering home life, religion, work, battle, trade, food, language and geography. We can offer a single focus day on either Anglo Saxons or Vikings, or a combined programme for a compare/contrast study of both - just let us know what you prefer when you book.
Learning Outcomes:
Group size:.
This programme can accommodate 12-228 children . You will be allocated to a site (either Old Hall or Farm) depending on your group size and our availability.
Please note that groups of 100+ can only be supported from mid June - end of July. For large groups, period music and/or a falconry demonstration can be arranged for an additional charge.
Activities:
The programme will be mainly held outside (weather depending), so our team make a final decision about specific activities on the morning of the event. However, typical activities include: shelter building, outdoor cookery, threshing/winnowing, deer walk and weapons. Don't worry if the weather is poor, we have an indoor programme that is just as exciting and engaging so you won't miss out!
Our advice is to wear sensible shoes, dress warmly and for the weather. Remember - we are a period site without central heating!
Children are welcome to come dressed up for the visit. Consult our costume information sheet (PDF,177KB) for some outfit ideas.
This is our most popular programme and as a result, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment. Make an enquiry using our Schools Enquiry form or contact us to discuss your requirements at [email protected] / 01625 374428.
Risk Assessment:

Roman Tours

School trip to Roman Tours
Roman Tours can bring life to the story of the Roman invasion of Britain and the legacy of an empire nearly 2000 years ago.
Dressed as the 1st Century Roman Soldier (other character roles available), they engage pupils through curriculum-relevant role play, character acting, questioning and activities, providing a unique and dynamic educational experience around the period of the Roman invasion and settlement of Britain. Their costumes and equipment, are exact copies of real artefacts and equipment found through archaeology investigation, to ensure their representation is as accurate as possible.
They can specially tailor sessions for all schools and also cater for disabilities and special needs.
To compensate for the lack of historical remains, they bring along various replica artifacts such as a full marching pack, which includes the soldier’s rations, underwear, fire lighting kit, money, spare clothes, strigil, cooking pots, tools, wine and water, spices etc etc. They also have a second set of armour for students to try, and even ladies’ make-up and sponge for his… well, you’ll find out!
Using a dynamic combination of character acting, demonstrations, Q&A and role play they make the experience exciting and interactive to educate and interest any age group . They provide a curriculum-relevant experience for any level from key stage 2 all the way to AS and teacher training colleges.
School visits at the Grosvenor Museum
If you are bringing a school group to Chester (Deva), then there is no better way than to visit them through their partners at the Grosvenor Museum. A visit to the museum’s Roman exhibits and artefacts combined with a Roman soldier patrol is an ideal way to start the topic or reinforce any teaching that has been done already.
They also include worksheets to answer from information drawn from the exhibits themselves and a handling session with one of their education officers.
Groups arriving are met at the museum by a Roman soldier in full and authentic armour and brought to attention in the style of a sergeant major, who welcomes them to 25 years of service in the legion. They are then each given a set of specially made lightweight plastic imitation armour to wear.
The new recruits are then given an insight into the life of a Roman soldier and the rigours they must endure in the British climate. They swear an oath to the emperor before heading out on patrol to various Roman remains including Chester’s own amphitheatre.
Their visits are always interactive

It doesn't matter where you're from or how old you are - there are many school trips we all remember from growing up in Greater Manchester.
Whether they were close to home or further afield, we all remember the excitement of getting out of lessons for the day, packing a picnic and making memories with our classmates.
Some school trips may have been more popular depending on the era you grew up in, whilst a number of attractions have changed or are no longer around.
Read More: 15 of Greater Manchester's favourite lost pubs from the 90s
We asked Manchester Evening News readers to name some of their favourite school trips that people from our region remember going on - and here is what you suggested.
Of course, this list is by no means complete and only captures a number of school trips people from Greater Manchester went on over the years. But if you can share memories and want to tell us about your favourite school trip, let us know in the comments section.
Martin Mere
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is a wetland nature reserve and visitor attraction in Burscough in Lancashire.
Established since 1975, for years schools have visited for wildlife spotting, den building and more.
It's fondly remembered by M.EN. readers responding to our call for memories on our Facebook page.
Reader Coral McKeown said: "Martin Mere, me and my friend rescued some ducklings."
Anyone who was born in the 80s or 90s will have fond memories of days out with the family at Camelot Theme Park.
Located a few miles outside Chorley in Lancashire, it first opened its doors in 1983.
It operated until November 2012 and boasted medieval style rides including the Knightmare and the Whirlwind.
It was fondly remembered by a number of our readers, including Stephanie Foy, Joanne Craddock and Dawn Seddon.
The latter wrote: "Defo going Camelot at the end off year term - Bolton museum and church with primary school, love it."
Alton Towers
Thousands of us will have visited Alton Towers over the years and been on its legendary rollercoasters.
Some of the most famous decommissioned rides include The Corkscrew, The Thunder Looper, The Beast, Alton Mouse and The Black Hole.
It was loved by a number of our readers, including Cathy Slack, Deanne Murphy, Cheryl Kerrigan and Abdullah Al-Mamun who has "awesome memories" from the end of year school trip.
Andy Eyre also commented: "Camelot and Alton Towers. Looking back, it seems mad that we were allowed to just wander off on our own for a few hours. If my kids' school suggested that today, I'd be bricking it."
Blue John Cavern
The Blue John Cavern is at Castleton in the Peak District.
Home to eight of the fourteen known varieties of Blue John stone, the mineral has been mined for centuries.
Steeped in history, old mining equipment is also on view inside the cavern.
North Base and Bridget Young both suggested Blue John Cavern on our Facebook page.
The Lake District
The Lake District is known worldwide for its glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fell mountains and more.
It also attracts buses of schools to take part in activities or visit Lake Windermere and surrounding towns.
Wendy Saxon said: "Going to Lake Windermere, capsizing my canoe in a freezing water and Chester Zoo with school friends."
Kerry Hulme said: "Hornsey pottery trip, also Lake Windermere camping with school was awful x"
Angela Todorovic posted: "In the early 70’s we went to The Lake District."
Isle of Man
One of the most popular Greater Manchester school trip destinations through the generations has been the Isle of Man.
Classes of pupils will remember embarking on the nearly three hour ferry journey to set up camp for a few days away.
You may have moaned about the time it took to get there or if the weather wasn't on your side, but the best part was having a laugh staying in tents.
Dean Castree posted: "Isle of Man with Cherry Tree junior school in Romiley, then Butlins the year after, early 90’s and great times."
Giselle Louise Fox said: "Isle of Man in primary visiting the Laxey Wheel & seeing Manx cats."
And Rain Manley wrote: "Isle of Man with school for a week."
Granada Studios
Who remembers the Granada Studios Tour?
Open in the 1980s and 1990s, the entertainment theme park was at the Granada Studios complex in Castlefield.
It's well remembered by M.E.N readers like Rosemary Maken, Tina Doleman, and Kerry Louise New who said: "I remember going to the old Granada studios in Manchester, it was so good x."
Many would agree that Eureka! The National Children's Museum is quite unlike anything you have seen before.
Located in Halifax, Yorkshire, schools from Greater Manchester and beyond still venture to the museum, which has exhibitions linked to the National Curriculum.
Readers Sarah Whitehead and Jaydee Boo both said it was definitely a trip to remember.
Tatton Park
Tatton Park in Knutsford, Cheshire, is one of the UK's most complete historic estates.
Home to a Tudor Old Hall, acres of landscaped gardens and a deer park, it's one of the many places Greater Manchester schools venture to for trips each year.
Reader Sarah Louise Gabrielle remembers venturing to Tatton Hall, as well as Chester Zoo with her school.
Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo remains a popular and exciting school trip.
The most visited zoo in the UK, the zoo has around 20,000 animals on site, from black lemurs and Caribbean flamingos to grey-crowned crane's and spider monkeys.
Welcoming hundreds of Greater Manchester school children a year, classes will remember splitting off into groups and being allowed to go the gift shop with their pocket money.
Leila Atherall remembers visiting Chester Zoo, as does Bianca Fay Jones, who said: "Chester Zoo, always came home with some little pot animal from the gift shop."
There was nothing better than getting to go to school in your own clothes before setting out on a trip to Wigan Pier.
But the much-loved Way We Were museum in Wigan, about Victorian life, has been shut for over a decade.
MEN readers Elizabeth Adams and Helen Marie Brown suggested Wigan Pier, and Chris Howarth remembers the Victorian classroom which "was a laugh."
Chatsworth House
Home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth House has been passed down through generations of the Cavendish family.
On the site, there is a farmyard and adventure playground as well as a house labyrinth and gardens.
Gil Dobbs said: "Going to Chatsworth house, my friend and I hid a classmate under our legs and coats on the coach as he was the only one whose mum couldn’t pay for him to go. We thought it was a good idea."
Alison Hughes said: "Blue John Mines and Chatsworth House. I was about ten at the time and attended Pike Fold Primary School. The school has since been demolished and a new school with the same name built in Blackley Village."
Jodrell Bank
Jodrell Bank Observatory is located in Cheshire and hosts a number of radio telescopes.
It is part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester.
What school trips did you go on as a child? Let us know in the comments section below.
Jane Victoria and Donna Duke remember going on a school trip there. Reader Josephine De Bongshire also posted: "Remember crying once because I missed a trip to Jodrell Bank because I was going on holiday to America. Pretty pathetic."

Denver wins men's hockey national title
🏆 Jacksonville State wins NC bowling title
🏀 WAY-too-early men's power rankings
Daniel Wilco | April 8, 2024
The college basketball teams with the most national championships.
There are more than 350 schools in Division I men's basketball. Yet only 15 teams have won multiple national championships. UCLA comes in first with 11. But which schools are close behind?
There are seven teams tied for ninth place at two championships apiece. Cincinnati (1961, 1962), Florida (2006, 2007), Louisville (1980, 1986), Michigan State (1979, 2000), North Carolina State (1974, 1983), Oklahoma State (1945, 1946), and San Francisco (1955, 1956).
Interestingly enough, four of those teams won their two championships in back-to-back years.
College basketball teams with the most national championships
- Kentucky — 8
- North Carolina — 6
- Indiana — 5
- Villanova — 3
- Cincinnati — 2
- Florida — 2
- Louisville — 2
- Michigan State — 2
- NC State — 2
- Oklahoma State — 2
- San Francisco — 2
*Louisville’s participation in the 2013 tournament was later vacated by the Committee on Infractions.
Here's a closer look, including a table of the complete list of champions below:
8: Villanova — 3
Years: 1985, 2016, 2018
Villanova knows how to win a championship in style. The Wildcats’ first title still holds the record for the lowest-seeded team to win the NCAA tournament, as 8-seed Villanova upset mighty 1-seed Georgetown in 1985. In 2016, Kris Jenkins etched his name into March lore with a half-court buzzer-beater to down North Carolina. And in 2018, junior guard Donte DiVincenzo won the MOP after scoring 31 points off the bench as the Wildcats won their second in three years.
T6: Kansas — 4
Years: 1952, 1988, 2008, 2022
Kansas is the most recent national champion, beating North Carolina in a thriller in 2022. The Jayhawks' most recent title before that was an OT win against Memphis in 2008.
T4: Indiana — 5
Years: 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, 1987
Indiana’s first two championships came via a former player in Branch McCracken. McCracken graduated from Indiana in 1930, and took over the coaching job in 1938-39. In his second year, he led the Hoosiers to a 20-3 season capped off by a 60-42 win over Kansas in just the second national championship game ever. Seven years after McCracken’s tenure ended, Bob Knight would take over in Bloomington. Knight’s first championship with Indiana in 1976 came on the end of a 32-0 season — the last perfect season by a national champion.
T4: Duke — 5
Years: 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015
All five of Duke’s championships come after 1981. Why is that an important date? It’s the first season Mike Krzyzewski took over in Durham. Before Coach K, Duke had been to two title games, losing to UCLA in 1964 and Kentucky in 1978. Since, they’ve been to nine, winning five, and holding the record for the most championships since 1990.
T3: Connecticut — 6
Years: 1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2023, 2024
Connecticut has the most national championships this century at five, but there’s a much more prestigious record the Huskies hold. UConn has been to six championship games and has won every time. No other team with at least three appearances is undefeated in title games.
T3: North Carolina — 6
Years: 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2017
In 1957, a year after Bill Russell and San Francisco went 29-0 to win the national championship, fifth-year coach Frank McGuire led North Carolina to the second-ever undefeated national championship season in NCAA tournament history. The Tar Heels wouldn’t make it back to the championship game until 1968, in Dean Smith’s seventh year in Chapel Hill. It was the second of three straight Final Four trips without a title, but Smith’s first (and UNC’s second) would come in 1982, thanks to a roster of James Worthy, Sam Perkins, and Michael Jordan. Smith would win one more title in 1993. All three of UNC’s other championships came from his protégé, Roy Williams.
2: Kentucky — 8
Years: 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998, 2012
In the middle of the 20th century, long before they became famous for their team’s youth, Kentucky was a powerhouse. Adolph Rupp started at Kentucky in 1930-31, but it wasn’t until his 18th season, in 1948, that the Wildcats would win the program’s first NCAA tournament title. They’d repeat in 1949, and pick up two more before Rupp retired. Since, four different coaches have won a title with Kentucky: Joe B. Hall in 1978, Rick Pitino in 1996, Tubby Smith in 1998, and John Calipari in 2012.
1: UCLA — 11
Years: 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1995
In all of college sports, it doesn't get much better than UCLA's reign through the ‘60s and ‘70s. From 1964 to 1975, UCLA had an overall record of 335-22, a win percentage of .938. Over 12 years. Through it all, the Bruins picked up 10 national championships, including seven in a row — feats that will never be replicated.

Middle East latest: Israeli foreign ministry outlines 'initial price' Iran must pay for missile attacks - as Tehran warns of 'bigger' retaliation
Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said aircraft are still patrolling the skies. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said the US military helped Israel "take down nearly all of the drones and missiles" fired by Iran.

The Israeli minister for national security has said Israel must go "berserk" in response to Iran's attack.
Itamar Ben Gvir, a member of the war cabinet, said Israel "must not be wimpish".
"The concepts of containment and proportionality, these concepts became obsolete on 7 October.
"In order to establish deterrence in the Middle East, you must show them that you've gone berserk and completely lost it."
The first direct attack on Israel by Iran has shaken Israelis and left them fearful a bigger war is looming.
Iranian weapons and interceptors could be seen flashing over the sky at night.
"I think it was quite scary when in the middle of the night we started hearing booming and we didn't know what it was, I mean we knew what it was, we didn't know to what extent it would be," said Jerusalem resident Cecile Smulowitz.
"But thank God the Israeli army came through, and so far it's quiet and we hope it would continue that way."
Some Israelis said they did not want an escalation but with the stakes so high they were nervous.
"I really hope there won't be a big war, none of us in Israel wants a big war so I hope that's it, and I hope Iran would stop now," said Jeremy Smith, 60, a resident of Tzur Hadassah.
"I imagine Israel will respond because I mean, our whole country was covered in missiles and drones. So what can you do? But we have to stop it somehow."
Jerusalem resident Amy Friedlang Morgans, 71, said: "We don't want a war with Iran, somehow they can't accept Jewish people living here. This is our homeland, it's written in the Bible."
Some further Israeli reaction to last night's attacks by Iran, with war cabinet minister Benny Gantz promising a response.
Mr Gantz, himself a retired army general, said that Israel would exact a price from Iran in a manner and time "that's right for us".
"Yesterday, Iran launched an attack on Israel - and met the strength of the Israeli security system," he said in a statement - just ahead of an expected war cabinet meeting.
He described Iran as a "global problem" as well as a regional challenge.
"This event is not over - the strategic alliance and the regional cooperation system that we built and stood its significant test need to be strengthened precisely now," he added.
He said that Israel had proven itself "an anchor of military and technological power" and of security in the region.
"Faced with the threat of Iran - we will build a regional coalition and collect the price from Iran, in the way and at the time that suits us," he said.
Footage released by Iranian state TV reportedly shows missiles being launched from Iran.
Some of the more than 150 cruise and ballistic missiles are shown blasting into the sky, leaving smoke trails behind.
While a military base sustained light damage, only a "handful" of the more than 300 missiles and drones made it through Israel's air defences, according to the IDF.
The Israeli foreign ministry has outlined an "initial price" it says Iran must pay for its attack.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps must be recognised as a terrorist organisation, said spokesperson Lior Haiat.
"Painful sanctions" must also be imposed on Iran, including in the field of missiles, he added.
"Israel has the right to defend itself in the face of Iran's massive attack. Israel successfully defended itself against Iran's aggression and will continue to do so in the future," read a statement.
Iran's attack on Israel, its threats issued to the US and its supply of weapons to Russia "endangers world peace", said Mr Haiat.
"This is precisely why Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons," the statement said.
Israel's air defence system is one of the most effective in the world.
The system consists of a series of truck-towed mobile units placed strategically throughout the country.
When their radars detect a threat, the information is sent to a 'battle management centre' where military personnel analyse it, anticipating its path and impact point, and decide which missile launcher to use to intercept it.

Italy, which holds the presidency at the G7, has confirmed our earlier reports that it will hold a meeting of the group this afternoon.
In a short statement, the Italian presidency website said the remote meeting would be held early this afternoon to "discuss Iran's attack against Israel".
The US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan make up the members of the Group of Seven major economies, set up in 1973.
Iran's actions, like Russia's, threaten to cause a larger conflict, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.
He called for efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
"Iran's actions threaten the entire region and the world, just as Russia's actions threaten a larger conflict.
"The obvious collaboration between the two regimes in spreading terror must face a resolute and united response from the world."
Israel will respond to Iran's attack, but the decision-makers have not come to a conclusion on the type of response, an Israeli official has told CNN.
The official said Israel has not decided whether to "break all the dishes" or take a more measured action.
Israel's war cabinet are expected to discuss the options today, the official said.
Iran informed the US that its attacks against Israel would be "limited" and for self-defence, Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian says.
He added Iran notified its neighbours of the strikes 72 hours in advance.
"We informed our friends and neighbours in the region that Iran's response against Israel was certain, legitimate, and irrevocable," Mr Amirabdollahian said at a press conference.
