A customer guide to traveling with Delta

Editor's note: This article was most recently revised and updated Apr. 9, 2024 to include new information about boarding zones.

At Delta, our team of 100,000 is focused on delivering a reliable, high-quality experience and minimizing inconvenience when circumstances disrupt scheduled operations. We deeply value the trust customers place in us to get them to their destination safely and on time. That said, we also understand the journey to people and places that connect the world sometimes doesn't go as expected.

Our culture is founded on the principle of having our customers’ backs, particularly if they experience a delay, misconnect or cancellation. We stand by our commitment to ensure customers get to where they need to be on a safe and clean flight, on time and with their bags.

The below provides steps you can take to make the most of your Delta travel experience – not only during the busy holiday season – but every time you choose to fly Delta.

We remain committed to taking care of all customers – supporting every individual throughout their travel journey. Here’s what we can do to help when it’s needed:

Know Before You Go

Join delta skymiles® to help our teams better serve you and stay connected in the air.

When you  create a SkyMiles account , you get more than just miles earned toward your next trip. Your SkyMiles account ensures Delta people more seamlessly know your travel details and preferences and can aid with reaccommodating should disruptions in your travel occur. Knowing you is better for serving you. Keeping your SkyMiles profile information up to date can help Delta teams reach you quickly and allows for direct contact and updates when needed.

Additionally, customers with SkyMiles accounts can access fast, free Wi-Fi  presented by T-Mobile onboard most domestic mainline flights to stay connected throughout the journey. As part of the onboard Wi-Fi experience, Delta teams have also designed two entertainment products – Delta Sync Wi-Fi and Delta Sync seatback – that complement each other throughout the duration of a flight and give customers even more ways to enjoy their travel journey across devices. This connectivity at scale is designed to fuel our version of more personalized travel, powered by your SkyMiles Membership.

Download or update the Fly Delta app

Delta’s digital tools offer quick and seamless options to make changes to your itinerary – either in the Fly Delta app, on  delta.com  or by using our  messaging  feature for further assistance.

Most times, the app provides the same tools and flexibility as a call to our Reservations center – allowing customers to make changes in real-time while on the go. Click on the “Today” tab in the app for boarding information, upgrade status, baggage location and key self-service shortcuts like same-day changes. The tab is updated in real-time with the latest and most important information customers need to make sure you never miss gate changes or a change in boarding times.

If you’re a SkyMiles member, logging into the app with your unique SkyMiles membership number and mobile number will allow us to contact you if needed and better serve you as you travel (make sure your mobile number is updated and accurate for day-of travel!).

Turned off notifications by mistake? Find the notifications selection in your device's Settings app and ensure Fly Delta app notifications are turned on. Manage your device's sleep mode settings accordingly, too, to avoid notifications being silenced.

Make sure to keep an eye out for any emails or text messages you receive from Delta with essential updates on your flight status, travel documents and what to know before you go to the airport. (This information is also available in  My Trips .)

Passport check: Renew early and validate

If you have plans to travel internationally, make sure to confirm your destination’s passport requirements and cushion enough time to get your passport renewed. Many countries will not grant entry to a traveler unless the passport expires at least six months after the final day of travel. That said, if your passport has less than six months remaining until it expires, plan and allow for enough time to renew before you go.

A pro tip: After renewing your passport and creating a SkyMiles account, be sure to add your passport credentials into the Fly Delta app and get it verified when you are ready to check in – it’ll save time during your next trip!

Breeze through security

To speed up your airport experience, consider applying for TSA PreCheck® and opt in for Delta Digital ID when departing from ATL, DTW, LAX, LGA and JFK. Digital ID uses facial-matching technology to let customers check bags and move through security without showing a physical government ID, providing a seamless, hands-free way to navigate the airport. This technology is optional and eligible to customers who:

Have a TSA PreCheck® membership.

Have passport information and a Known Traveler Number stored in their Delta profile.

Have a (free) SkyMiles membership.

Have the Fly Delta app

Know Your Zone

Starting May 1, Delta will introduce numbered boarding zones for all flights to provide customers with more clarity about boarding sequence. Delta will still offer pre-board opportunities for customers who need extra time or assistance, followed by active-duty military, then Delta 360 Members. The boarding order will not change, beginning with pre-boarding, then Delta One or First Class customers boarding in Zone 1, followed by Diamond Medallions and Delta Premium Select customers boarding in Zone 2. See the breakdown of boarding by zone .

Customer boarding passes—including printed boarding passes and those accessed via the Fly Delta app—will reflect the new zone numbers, along with updated sequencing on airport screens and in gate announcements. Zones 1-4 will use the Sky Priority lane and Zones 5-8 will use the General Boarding lane, as they do today. Boarding lane signs will be updated to show boarding zone numbers .

Familiarize yourself with resources for customers with special needs

If you or one of your travel companions needs special assistance due to sensory, physical or cognitive disabilities, Delta and the TSA have a number of resources available to you.

  • Atlanta and Minneapolis hubs offer familiarization tours that allow families with disabilities to practice the process of traveling through an airport in preparation for travel. At MSP, customers can tour a mock cabin and meet with volunteers to ready themselves for their journeys.
  • Many airports, including Delta hubs ATL, LGA and SEA, offer sensory rooms for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families. To use a sensory room, locate a Delta Red Coat for assistance. Review more resources for customers on the autism spectrum, including a complete list of available sensory rooms, here .
  • Visit Delta.com for complete accessible travel services , including information on wheelchair assistance, service animals, dietary needs and allergies, and more.

Change or cancel your flight without a change fee

At Delta, we know that plans change. That’s why we allow customers who have purchased tickets for travel within the U.S. or traveling internationally from the U.S. to change or cancel their travel plans without a change fee. This includes tickets purchased for travel originating in the U.S. in Delta’s First Class, Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin, except for Basic Economy tickets. Note: Fare differences for ticket changes will still apply.

At the airport

Pack thoughtfully.

Remember to take anything you might need on the plane, like phones or medication, out of your checked luggage first. Lithium batteries are prohibited in checked baggage.

If your bag is delayed, proceed to the Delta Baggage Service Office in the baggage claim area, where you’ll be greeted by a Delta professional for additional assistance.

Arrive early

As a general rule, plan to arrive three hours prior to your departure time – especially on heavy travel days.

Take advantage of in-airport prioritized messaging

In Delta’s U.S. hubs, customers experiencing mid-journey disruptions may access expedited Reservations service through a dedicated messaging channel that can assist with immediate travel needs.

If you experience a delay, you may use the Fly Delta app to self-service, message our customer service team, or locate a Need Help Center where you’ll be greeted by a Delta professional for additional assistance.

How Delta people are working to support you in case of flight delays or cancellations

“care while waiting” carts at the gate.

To ease the disruption of unexpected delays, “care while waiting” carts stocked with water and snacks are often available at the gate to help refresh customers waiting on their flight. In some cases, flight attendants can also request that these extra supplies be brought onto a parked aircraft.

Vouchers for hotels, meals, ground transportation for unexpected stays

Vouchers can often ensure more comfort during uncertain or unpredictable travel. Meal vouchers will be provided at the airport to customers if a cancellation or delay within Delta’s control causes a wait of three hours or more beyond the scheduled departure time. Hotel accommodations and ground transportation will also be provided at Delta contracted facilities, based on availability, if customers are inconvenienced overnight while away from their home and the cause of the delay, misconnect or cancellation is within Delta's control.

Flight cancellations and refunds

When cancellations become necessary as a last resort, Delta Reservations specialists coordinate with our Operations and Customer Center to get impacted customers on the next available Delta flight. If necessary, we will rebook customers on flights operated by other airlines. If a customer’s new itinerary no longer fits their travel needs, Delta continues to provide full and timely refunds to eligible passengers. Customers have options to request a refund  on Delta.com. Delta teams strive to notify customers of itinerary changes as far in advance as possible. We’ll send updates directly to a mobile device or by email if this contact information is included during booking or added later via My Trips online.

A waiver allows customers to change their itinerary with no fare differences if they remain in the same cabin as originally booked. Delta most commonly issues waivers ahead of weather events that we know are likely to cause cancellations and delays – allowing customers to make sure they get where they need to go by flying earlier or later than initially anticipated. Once posted to  delta.com , customers with travel to, from or through a city listed will receive a notification of the waiver via email, Fly Delta app notifications, or SMS messaging. Customers will be guided from there through the process of making changes to their itinerary, should they choose to do so.

How to change or cancel a Delta Air Lines flight

Delta Planes LAX

Delta Air Lines used to have one of the most restrictive change and cancellation policies . But once the pandemic hit and airlines started to loosen up, Delta followed suit. The Delta cancellation policy and Delta refund policy are now quite favorable and in line with most other major U.S. carriers.

No matter which fare class you purchase, you'll likely be able to cancel your Delta flight. And you'll no longer face incredibly high fees when changing or canceling most fare types.

With the current Delta refund policy, you'll be in a better situation than in the past if your plans change and you need to change or cancel a Delta flight. If that situation does arise, here's everything you need to know.

Sign up for our daily newsletter for more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox.

Canceling a Delta flight

delta travel help

Cancel a paid Delta reservation

When purchasing a Delta Air Lines flight, there are three fare options: basic economy, nonrefundable and refundable. The nonrefundable and refundable options will give you the most flexibility, whereas basic economy options are relatively restrictive.

When searching for flights on the Delta Air Lines website, you'll typically see a few options: Basic, Main, Comfort+, First and Delta One (depending on the type of plane).

You can book Main, Comfort+, First and Delta One fares as nonrefundable or refundable. You'll usually see the nonrefundable option by default unless you select the "refundable" checkbox during your search.

But after selecting a nonrefundable flight, a pop-up will usually show you the price difference between nonrefundable and refundable fares.

delta travel help

You can usually cancel a Delta basic economy ticket , but you'll typically face a fee. Canceling basic economy fares for travel within the U.S. or to Mexico, the Caribbean or Central America costs $99, while other routes cost $199.

If you cancel a basic economy ticket, you'll receive an eCredit for the remaining value. However, with the ongoing pandemic, you'll want to see if Delta has released any waivers for basic economy flights. Typically, eCredits would expire a year after they are received. But, due to the pandemic, Delta has extended all eCredits through Dec. 31, 2023.

Nonrefundable tickets, on the other hand, have no fees for canceling travel originating in North America. If you need to cancel your ticket, you'll end up with an eCredit for the full amount paid. However, for flights originating outside North America, you'll still be on the hook for a fee of up to $500 based on the Delta cancellation policy. Specifically, for tickets originating in Europe, the cancellation fee is 150 euros (about $158); and for tickets originating in Africa, the Middle East and India, the cancellation fee is $199.

delta travel help

There are a few caveats to the above rules, though. For travel originating in Mexico, you cannot change your ticket, so, the Delta refund policy won't give you anything if you need to cancel. Additionally, for travel originating in Korea, you'll receive the refund back to your original form of payment (after Delta deducts the respective cancellation fee) instead of an eCredit.

Additionally, for all flights originating in the U.S. — even basic economy flights — you can cancel within 24-hours of making the reservation for a full refund.

If you purchase a refundable ticket and need to cancel, you'll receive the full amount paid back to your original form of payment without any fees. While refundable tickets typically cost more to buy, if you think there's a good chance you'll have to cancel and you don't want to worry about a Delta credit, buying a refundable ticket might be your best option.

To be eligible for a Delta refund, you'll need to cancel your flight before departure. If you are a "no show" (which means not showing up for your flight without changing or canceling prior), you'll lose the entire value of your ticket. Additionally, Delta will cancel any remaining flights on your itinerary.

Cancel a Delta reservation booked with miles

delta travel help

Redeeming Delta miles for your flight will typically give you the most flexibility if you need to cancel. All award flights, except those booked as basic economy awards, can be canceled before the flight's departure with no fee. Once canceled, the miles used for the flight will go back to the account they were booked from — again, with no redeposit fee. The taxes and fees paid will also go back to the original form of payment.

You can cancel basic economy award tickets, but Delta will deduct between 9,900 and 19,900 miles from the cost of your mileage ticket. For flights within the U.S., or to Canada, Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean, Delta will charge you 9,900 miles. For all other flights, you're looking at a 19,900 mileage fee. Delta will deduct this fee from the miles you paid before refunding the remaining miles to your account. The only way around the Delta cancellation policy (and this cancellation fee) is if you cancel your Delta flight within 24 hours of making the reservation.

Additionally, Delta used to have a policy where you couldn't change or cancel a flight within 72-hours of the flight's departure. Fortunately, this is no longer the case and you can cancel your flight within that "last minute" window.

How to cancel a Delta flight

Delta has made it incredibly easy to cancel a flight online. While you can always call to cancel, there's a good chance you'll wait on hold for a substantial amount of time .

Instead, in your Delta account, go to "My Trips." All of your upcoming flights should appear, or you can find a specific itinerary by entering your first name, last name and confirmation number. Once you are in the itinerary that you want to cancel, click the "Modify" button at the top.

delta travel help

You'll then have the option to change or cancel your flight. If you're canceling a Delta flight, you'll want to select the "cancel" button. Delta lists the cost of the flight along with the refund details. From there, you can go ahead and confirm the cancellation.

Although Delta's official policy is to redeposit miles within 72 hours, I've always received my miles back almost immediately.

Changing a Delta flight

delta travel help

Change a paid Delta reservation

There might be a situation where you want to change your upcoming Delta Air Lines reservation instead of canceling. While this is possible for some reservations, the structure works similarly to canceling and rebooking.

As I discussed above, there are three different reservation types: basic economy, nonrefundable and refundable.

Basic economy tickets do not allow flight changes. Instead, you'll need to cancel your Delta flight (with the associated fees discussed above) and then book your desired flight.

But, you can change nonrefundable and refundable reservations without going through the hassle of canceling and rebooking. You'll be charged the same fees as canceling a flight for nonrefundable fares ($0 to $500, depending on where the flight originates). But, for fully refundable flights, there's no fee to change your flight.

If the flight price has gone up, you'll need to pay the fare difference in both circumstances. But, if your flight has gone down in price, you'll end up with an eCredit for the difference in the price paid and the new fare cost. According to the Delta refund policy, fully refundable flights will receive the price difference back to their form of payment.

Even if you're not looking to change your flight, if you noticed that your originally scheduled flight has gone down in price, you can go through the change process to receive the difference back. To do this, select your same flight by following the "change flight" process below.

Change a Delta reservation booked with miles

delta travel help

Changing a Delta reservation booked with miles follows the same policies as paid reservations. As such, basic economy awards can't be changed and instead need to be canceled (with the respective fees) and then rebooked.

You can change to a different flight for no fee on all other tickets. However, you'll need to pay the difference in miles if your flight costs more. Alternatively, if the number of miles required has dropped, you'll receive the difference back into your account. Similar to paid fares, this policy will help you reprice an award ticket if your flight has decreased in miles.

Change a Delta reservation within 24 hours of travel

In 2021, Delta made customer-friendly improvements for those looking to change their flight last minute — which means within 24 hours of the originally scheduled departure. There are two options for flights within the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands: same-day confirmed and same-day standby.

If your flight has gone up in price, utilizing one of these two options will save you more money than simply changing your flight to the more expensive flight. Unfortunately, these options are not available if you have a basic economy ticket.

For same-day confirmed changes, if a seat in your originally purchased fare class (or a downgraded fare class) is available, you can change your ticket to a confirmed seat on a new flight (for the same day of travel with the same the departure and arrival cities). The cost is $75, or complimentary for those with Delta Diamond, Platinum or Gold status. You can confirm a same-day seat through your account on the Delta App .

If the same-day confirmed option isn't available, you can use same-day standby to wait for a seat on an earlier flight on the same day as your original flight. Delta will keep your original reservation intact unless it can assign you a seat on the earlier flight. There is no fee for this option.

How to change a Delta flight

Changing a Delta flight can be done online through your Delta account. The start of the process is similar to if you were to cancel your flight.

In your Delta account's "My trip" section, you'll see your upcoming flights. Similar to canceling a flight, you'll want to click the "Modify" button in the specific itinerary you need to change. You'll then want to select the "Start flight change" button.

delta travel help

From there, you'll want to enter the new airports and departure date.

delta travel help

Once you select your new flight, the right-side rail will inform you of the difference in miles — if there is a difference — and your total cost or refund. Delta will also tell you if there's a difference in the taxes and fees. You then must click the "Complete change" button on the bottom to confirm your change.

delta travel help

Change fee waivers for a schedule change

Delta Air Lines goes through schedule changes quite often. If you have a flight that you need to cancel or change, you might be better off waiting to see if there is a schedule change . After all, a schedule change may let you change or cancel your flight easier or with fewer fees.

Even though Delta has done away with most fees, a few ticket types still incur a fee, such as basic economy tickers. But, a schedule change may let you change to another flight with no fare difference. It can also allow you to get a full refund to your original form of payment — if you want to cancel — instead of an eCredit.

Related: What to do when an airline changes your flight

Usually, you'll receive an email when there's a schedule change. Delta will usually notify you if your flight qualifies for a fee waiver. Or, if you see one of the following situations occur, you can call Delta and request a new flight as well:

  • A delay of 120 minutes or more.
  • A change in the routing of a scheduled Delta flight that adds one or more stops to the original itinerary.
  • A change in equipment from Delta Mainline to Delta Connection carrier.
  • Any change that causes a misconnect.
  • If a flight cancels and no comparable or acceptable routing is available within 120 minutes.

If any of the above situations happen, you can opt for a new flight on the same day as the originally scheduled flight. The flight has to be the same origin and destination and the same class of service. Previously, Delta allowed you to change to a flight one day before or after, but this is no longer the case.

The above scenarios may also unlock the possibility of a full refund on a nonrefundable ticket.

Delta's cancellation policy is now extremely customer friendly if you need to cancel or change an upcoming flight. For flights originating in North America, there's no fee to cancel a flight as long as you don't hold a basic economy ticket.

Thanks to the current Delta refund policy, paid fares will receive an eCredit (unless you booked a fully refundable fare) and those booked on miles will see the full amount of miles deposited back into their account.

Although Delta used to have one of the most stringent policies, it's nice to see that it has come around to making flight cancellations and changes easier for its members. This helps travelers book a flight even if they aren't 100% sure of their upcoming plans — especially when redeeming miles.

Ratings and Reviews

Review of delta app.

My original flight 3/9 was canceled from JAX to RIC via LGA and Delta rescheduled me on another flight via JFK. Then my departure from JAX to JFK was delayed so much so that my arrival into RIC was being further pushed back. I was given the option to change my flight at no cost which I opted to do but I was not able to see what seats were available. I thought at some point I would be given the option to see available seats prior to finalizing the change but that never occurred. After accepting the change I found I didn’t have a seat assignment on the departure and I was assigned a middle seat (which I despise) on the connection. A passenger should be given the option to see what seats are available before making a change. I can assure you had I known prior to accepting the change that I would have to wait to be assigned a seat at the airport and that I would only have a middle seat on the connection I would not have changed from the rescheduled flight. Then to add insult to injury I used points to sit in Delta comfort from JAX to LGA because of the length of the flight. I no longer want to use points on either leg of the flights via ATL and I sincerely hope my points will be deposited back into my account. I had aisle seats (which I prefer) on both my original flights and I’m very disappointed I don’t have them on either flight tomorrow. I apologize for such a lengthy message; I didn’t expect to have to deal with flight changes that would disrupt my trip.

Change of flight times

After several lights changes since the time I originally booked, my international layover went from 1 hour and 45 minutes to only 40 minutes. A 45 minute layover for an international connection is not enough time, especially as I am flying with a family of five, this forced asked to switch flights. In doing so, I lost the upgraded seats I initially used points for. This would not have been a big deal, but it is highly disappointing that delta would not reimburse you for the points lost due to a change on their end. This policy really needs changed. In addition, the four hour plus waiting to talk to a representative force me to try to utilize the chat function. Even though I know I was able to speak to somebody relatively quickly, I made it all the way to having new flights but the person I was talking to left the chat. Waited a while and then the screen turned out causing me to start over. OK I thought, disappointing but just a fluke, but what do you know it happened again. The second time, I am mediately typed “representative“ and then we can immediately going through the process with a third agent. At least this time all the previous chat information was still up for her to review instead of starting back from scratch. The system need some bugs worked out, it’s also very hard to read on an iPhone.

Unable to upgrade

I had an opportunity to upgrade for a flight and was traveling with another individual. On my app, the seats weren’t available, but was showing availability for who I was traveling with. I tried contacting Delta to discuss the problem and they were unsuccessful with helping and said that they couldn’t see any availability from their end and to check the website. The person that I was traveling with was able to see availability and called to request the seats since we were both traveling on the same flight together. We were told that they would give us a voluntary change since it didn’t show availability on my app. The person I was traveling with didn’t have medallion status and was able to see first class tickets available for the first leg of the international flight, but wasn’t able to upgrade to first class on the flight home. However, I was given the option to upgrade to first class on the last portion of my flight instead of the international portion. I then was told that in order to upgrade, I would have to upgrade the entire flight. I thought that was ridiculous because I didn’t have to do that going on my trip. I had regular seating and then first class for the longer portion of the trip. I should be able to upgrade regardless if it’s available on another person’s app and we are traveling together and both AREN’T MEDALLION MEMBERS. How ridiculous…

Guide to Delta business travel

Key takeaways.

  • D elta's dedicated business travel branch, aptly named Delta Business, offers members a wide range of perks and benefits, especially if they carry a co-branded Delta SkyMiles credit card.
  • These Delta SkyMiles credit cards give cardholders boosted rewards rates when it comes to earning miles and makes it easier for them to reach Medallion status.
  • Delta Business also provides account managers who work directly with corporations to ensure that they always have their flight needs covered.

If you travel for business, you know Delta Air Lines is a preferred airline for heading to major cities and convention destinations, offering many options for business travelers of all types. Delta flies to 275 destinations in 50 countries, but it offers service to more than 1,000 destinations and 60 countries through Delta Connection carriers and partner airlines.

A premium U.S. airline, Delta offers a level of comfort, benefits and customer service that you may not receive with budget airlines — especially if you upgrade to premium seating. In this guide, we cover business travel with Delta, along with the best Delta credit cards for business travelers.

Delta business travel overview

Delta Business was designed to bring together Delta’s business-related travel programs within an all-encompassing travel brand. This resource can help you elevate your business travel — no matter the size of your business — through its travel programs, tools, resources and more.

Business perks include:

  • Access to private travel. With Delta, it’s easy to charter a flight or book a jet for large groups of professionals.
  • SkyBonus rewards In addition to earning miles in the Delta SkyMiles program — which can be redeemed for flights, seat upgrades and Delta Sky Club membership, among other options — businesses can earn SkyBonus points on eligible fares and upgrades. Points can then be redeemed for flights, Medallion status and more.
  • Dedicated corporate programs. Benefits like Corporate Priority can help corporations gain access to priority boarding, better seats and more, with terms that apply. Corporations can also receive perks like customized offers, exclusive experiences and Delta Sky Club access, all while working with a dedicated account manager.
  • Delta business credit cards. Delta offers three co-branded business credit cards with American Express, all of which can help you (and your employees) earn rewards and other perks on business travel. Employee cards come with no additional fee, and you can customize spending limits by card and authorized user.

Does Delta have a business class?

Delta doesn’t actually have a class called “business class” anymore. Instead, business travelers can take advantage of Delta One , an enhanced business class option available on long-haul international flights and select long-haul domestic flights. It offers business travelers private, spacious suites with full-height walls, a door, customizable lighting, a 180-degree flatbed seat, outlets, USB ports and more.

Still, Delta offers business travelers plenty of class choices with different tiers of comfort, service and pricing. For premium business travel, you’ll want to consider Delta One, first class or Premium Select fares. For an elevated Main Cabin experience, consider Comfort+ fares.

Best Delta business credit cards

Delta offers three business credit cards that earn Delta SkyMiles, all of which can help you to earn more miles and exclusive travel perks.

Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business American Express Card: Best for luxury business travel

Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card is the airline’s flagship luxury business travel card. It offers a generous welcome bonus of 70,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 in purchases within your first three months from account opening.

If you’re aiming for Medallion status, you’ll also like that the card offers a one-time “headstart” of $2,500 in Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) starting in February 2024, plus access to the MQD Status Boost. MQDs are what Delta uses to track Medallion status eligibility, so the more you get, the faster you’re able to enjoy Medallion status perks.

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business is a premium business card that comes with a $550 annual fee. For rewards, it provides 3X miles on eligible Delta purchases and 1X miles on all other purchases. After you spend $150,000 in a calendar year, you’ll earn 1.5X miles on all purchases.

Other notable benefits include:

  • Delta Sky Club access
  • Complimentary access to Centurion and Escape lounges
  • Two one-time guest passes for the Delta Sky Club each year
  • Free first checked bags
  • Up to a $100 credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry
  • Main Cabin 1 priority boarding
  • Purchase protection, return protection and extended warranty
  • 20 percent statement credit discount on eligible in-flight purchases
  • Complimentary travel concierge service

Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business American Express Card: Best for luxury perks without a premium price tag

If you’re looking for luxurious travel perks but you don’t want to pay the high annual fee of the Delta Reserve Business card, take a look at the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card . This card charges a $250 annual fee, and you can earn a welcome bonus of 60,000 miles after you spend $3,000 in your first three months. Like the Delta Reserve, you also get $2,500 in MQDs, as well as access to the MQD Status Boost.

Reward rates range from 1X to 3X on your spending:

  • 3X miles on eligible Delta purchases
  • 3X miles on purchases made directly with hotels
  • 1.5X miles on single eligible purchases of $5,000 or more (up to 50,000 additional miles per year)
  • 1X miles on all other purchases

Major card perks include priority boarding ; up to a $100 credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry; a companion certificate for one domestic, round-trip Main Cabin flight each year after card renewal; and a slew of travel protections.

Delta SkyMiles Gold Business American Express Card: Best for infrequent business travelers

If you travel less frequently for business, you should consider the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card . This card comes with a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $99 per year. As a new cardholder, you can earn a welcome bonus of 50,000 miles after spending $2,000 in your first three months of card membership.

You’ll also earn the following ongoing rewards:

  • 2X miles on eligible Delta purchases
  • 2X miles on select U.S. advertising and U.S. shipping purchases
  • 2X miles at restaurants worldwide (plus takeout and delivery in the U.S.)

It’s worth noting that you can recoup the cost of the annual fee after the first year with the $100 Delta flight credit alone, which you can earn after you spend $10,000 during a calendar year. Other benefits include travel insurance and protections, your first checked bag free on Delta flights, priority boarding, 20 percent back on eligible in-flight purchases and no foreign transaction fees .

The bottom line

If you travel a lot for business and want to fly in luxury, a travel credit card is a must. Delta offers amenities and space you may not find with other airlines. Plus, if you use a Delta SkyMiles co-branded business credit card from American Express, you can earn more miles and perks to make your business travel with Delta even more comfortable and luxurious.

Delta Is Making Some Changes to Its Boarding Process

Starting may 1, delta air lines will have a new numbered system for boarding. here’s how it will work..

Time to know which zone you’re in.

If there’s anything that sparks spirited debate among airline passengers, it’s the flight boarding process. No matter what system the airlines develop, the process always feels like a struggle, and some passengers are invariably left disgruntled. Airlines must balance the often-conflicting goals of loading a plane quickly and efficiently with rewarding passengers who purchase high-fare tickets or have airline status that includes an early boarding perk. Given airlines’ constantly increasing fees for checked bags, the passenger battle over early boarding in order to snag coveted carry-on space is likely to only get worse.

Enter: the latest attempt at rethinking the way passengers board. Delta this month introduced an update to its boarding process with a new numbered system, launching May 1. This new system replaces Delta’s eight-tiered Branded Boarding process with an eight-tiered Zone Boarding process. Delta’s Zone Boarding system will be similar to that used by most other airlines, including United and American , while differing from outlier Southwest Airlines with their love-it-or-hate-it three-tiered open seating system . United modified its zoned boarding process last October with separate zones loading sequentially for window, middle, and aisle seats (but only for regular-fare, non elite-status passengers) in the hope that it will speed the process.

What does Delta’s change mean for you, the passenger? Almost nothing. Delta’s old-to-new conversion chart shows that each of the previously used branded boarding zones translates directly into the new numbered system. So, the same passengers with a given ticket fare or frequent flier status will board in the same order in May as they did in April. For example, first-class and Delta One passengers will still board first, only now with “Zone One” printed on their tickets, while basic economy passengers will still board last, in Zone Eight.

Delta's conversion chart shows how the new boarding zones translate from Delta's previous boarding system.

So why is Delta going through the hassle of rebranding its boarding zones if nothing is really changing?

The new Zone Boarding process is expected to “provide customers more clarity into the boarding sequence and make the boarding process more intuitive—especially for infrequent travelers and/or customers who might face a language barrier at the gate,” Delta said in a statement to AFAR.

In essence, Delta is acknowledging that it is a whole lot easier for everyone to understand that Zone Four boards fourth, rather than trying to remember that Sky Priority boards between Delta Comfort and Main Cabin One. This is in stark contrast to Delta’s 2018 Branded Boarding launch, which boasted that “Zone boarding, an aviation standard for decades, will soon be a thing of the past.”

Delta’s reintroduced Zone Boarding system “will also align more closely with our joint venture and international partners,” the airline said in its statement, “providing international customers a more simplified, consistent experience,” particularly when traveling using different aircraft and code share partners during a multi-stop itinerary.

The change in the boarding system even merited mention in Delta’s most recent quarterly earnings call. CEO Ed Bastian touted the reintroduced Zone Boarding, saying, “When you have a number and you’re standing in line, we are all trained to know when it’s our turn.”

But while Delta’s naming conventions are simpler, expect the same boarding issues (or rewards for first-class passengers) to continue going forward with Delta and most other airlines.

While airline enthusiasts and operations analysts may dream of the day of innovative new systems being introduced, like strict WilMA (Window-Middle-Aisle) passenger loading , or the Steffen method of alternate-row back-to-front passenger entry, change may be slow to come. Ultimately, the airlines don’t want to give up the billions of dollars they are making from checked luggage fees , and passengers don’t want to give up their status benefit of priority boarding to claim valuable carry-on luggage space. So, expect a continued carousel of cosmetic changes like Delta’s numbering system for the time being.

Delta Airlines set to update passenger boarding starting May 1

Veronica Crespo , Digital Journalist

Delta Airlines is bringing back a familiar way to help customers board their flights beginning in May.

Beginning on May 1, passengers can expect to board their flight by numbered zones instead of by categories.

Recommended Videos

According to a chart on Delta’s website , customers in Delta One, First Class and those who need assistance will board in Zone 1. Diamond Medallion Members and Delta Premium Select will board in Zone 2.

Delta Comfort+ will board in Zone 3; Sky Priority in Zone 4; Main Cabin 1 in Zone 5; Main Cabin 2 in Zone 6; Main Cabin 3 in Zone 7; and Basic Economy will be Zone 8.

The new numbered zone will be clearly pronounced on customers’ boarding passes.

Why book a Delta vacation package?

Delta vacation deals can help you save money, should i book a delta vacation package using points, do delta vacations packages count toward status, how to book a delta vacation package, final thoughts on delta vacation packages.

If you’re planning a trip but don’t have the time or energy to do all the research, it may be wise to consider a vacation package . These bundles can neatly fold all your necessities into one booking and can earn you rewards to boot. Delta vacation packages offer the convenience of booking your flight, hotel and even car rental at an affordable cost.

Plus, with changes to Delta Vacations made in July 2023, SkyMiles members get more value for their miles when redeeming them for a package. They'll also earn more miles, too, if they book a Delta vacation package in cash.

We’ve put together a handy guide on Delta vacation packages, including a step-by-step guide on how to book the package and how you can decide if it's worth the cost.

Vacation packages are popular, so you’ll find offerings from multiple sources, such as online travel agencies, Costco , and airlines like Delta Air Lines and American Airlines . There are numerous benefits to booking a vacation package, including convenience and the ability to save money.

When booking a vacation with Delta, you can opt to redeem SkyMiles to pay for your package or earn SkyMiles when you pay for your booking. In addition to earning standard miles on your flights as you would with any Delta booking, you’ll also earn additional bonus miles.

As of July 10, 2023, Delta has increased the number of miles members will earn for vacation packages — at least at the higher price points.

Going forward, the number of SkyMiles you’ll earn will vary based on the price of your package:

Bookings up to $4,999: 1,000 bonus miles.

Bookings between $5,000 and $9,999: 5,000 bonus miles (previously was 2,000).

Bookings of $10,000 or more: 10,000 bonus miles (previously was 5,000).

NerdWallet values Delta miles are worth 1.2 cents each. So if you earn 5,000 bonus miles on a booking, you’d be earning the equivalent of $60. Although it’s not a huge amount, those extra miles can be put toward future flight redemptions.

Plus, Delta’s vacation packages offer a variety of options. To create a package and redeem miles, you can book any combination of flights, hotels, rental cars, car transfers and more. Even certain excursion packages are eligible for mileage earning, like escorted tours and river cruises available with Delta’s partner, Globus .

In many cases, Delta vacation packages will be cheaper than booking your vacation needs separately.

For example, with a package to Las Vegas Hilton at Resorts World in early October, including weekend nights and flights, a party of two can stay for three nights starting from $2,197. This doesn’t factor in resort fees , which tack on an extra $45 per night. That’s pretty pricey, but it is still cheaper than booking separately.

Let’s say you make your own independent bookings, with flight tickets for two people from New York to Las Vegas and the same hotel stay mentioned above. You’d be paying about $1,766 for your hotel (including resort fees) and $1,775.60 for the flights, bringing your total out-of-pocket cost to $3,542. In this case, you’ll be saving nearly 38% on your vacation.

You won’t be able to receive hotel elite status benefits on your stay while booking a vacation package, which means you may miss out on perks like daily food and beverage credits.

You can also use Delta SkyMiles to book Delta Vacations packages. This can be a helpful tool for travelers who have a large number of miles in their SkyMiles account, or those with American Express Membership Rewards points that transfer to Delta.

As part of the changes Delta is introducing to its vacation packages, members should be able to milk more value out of their miles.

Going forward, SkyMiles will carry 15% more value when redeemed for a vacation package. Previously, each mile was worth one cent when it came to Delta Vacations redemptions. Now, each mile will be worth 1.15 cents.

This change should make it more attractive to redeem miles on vacations, especially when you can't book a Delta award flight for 1.15 cents per point or more.

Yes, Delta SkyMiles members booking vacations packages can make progress toward Medallion Status. Members will earn one Medallion Qualification Dollar per $1 spent on a Delta vacation package.

Vacation packages can be an excellent option for travelers seeking convenience and savings. Along with the ability to book an all-in-one vacation, you’ll be able to earn and redeem your SkyMiles when booking a Delta vacation package.

Before you buy, remember that while your vacation package does earn towards Delta Medallion status , hotels booked through the package will typically not earn towards hotel elite status, nor will you receive any hotel benefits usually provided to those with status. So calculate this offset in savings when building your vacation packages.
