Alor Setar Attractions

Alor Setar is the state capital of Kedah. It holds a lot of interesting things to offer unique experiences for you. You can visit some interesting places here.

1. Zahir Mosque

Zahir Mosque is the first Kedah tourist attraction. 

What’s so interesting here? 

Zahir Mosque is well-known as one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia . It was built in 1912, and has been voted one of the top 10 most beautiful mosques globally. You should come and visit this mosque as it is one of the country’s grandest and oldest mosques.

You can visit the mosque, enjoy the exceptional architecture, and take some awesome pictures for memories. Enjoy yourself by seeping in the beautiful view of the mosque, which is said to have a Moorish architectural style influenced by Masjid Azizi , a mosque in Langkat, North Sumatera.

Note to remember, always wear extra fabric, or a sarong and cover your legs when you visit any mosque, as it is considered a place of religious activity and holy. For woman, you are advised to wear a scarf over your head, just like how most locals look when they come to do their prayers at the mosque.

2. Al-Bukhary Mosque

Another well-structured mosque in the Alor Setar district is the Al-Bukhary Mosque .

With wonderful and unique architecture from the Uzbekistan’s and Mamluk’s era, you can gaze at the beautiful building and take some nice photos. It is peaceful here, so take the opportunity to rest and free yourself from the hustling busy city life.

Also, remember to cover yourself well before entering the mosque, just to respect the place as a holy religious area.

3. Alor Setar Tower

This tower is officially the main Alor Setar tourist attraction. 

You can see almost the whole Alor Setar from the bird’s eye view. Although this is a communication tower, there is an observation deck where tourists can go.

4. Alor Setar Science Centre

As the name suggests, the Alor Setar Science Centre is mainly a place that is very suitable for children to come and visit.

 There are a lot of interactive displays like a small 3D viewing cinema and themes galleries, and activities like rock climbing, moon-walking, and cycling on a tightrope. If you come without children, it might be a bit boring.

Opening Hours: 8.00 am – 5.00 pm (Sunday -Thursday)

Fees: RM3.00 (USD0.74) ; Free for children below 7 years old, senior citizen, and the handicapped 

5. Kedah Paddy Museum

Kedah is the “rice bowl” of Malaysia, hence, you can experience and be awed by the rice spirit by visiting this museum. 

This museum holds truths about rice and its cultivation in various stages.

The main highlight of this museum, however, is the architecture; from the building shaped like rice overflowing from a basket and a vast mural showing farmers doing their everyday duties tending their crops!

6. Kedah Royal Museum

If you are interested to learn in-depth about the Kedahan royals, this is the best place to visit in Kedah. 

The museum holds many truths about the royal history of Kedah. Not only that, the architecture sure is breath-taking. 

Not to mention, this used to be a real palace back in the day, so you must visit here and see for yourself where the sultans used to live in!

7. Kedah State Museum

Another Kedah tourist spot in Alor Setar is the Kedah State Museum . If you are keen to learn about the history of Kedah, then this is definitely the place to go! 

Although you cannot take pictures in the museum, you can still take a stroll outside the impressive-looking building, and take a cruise along the Kedah river nearby.

8. Merdeka House

This was the first Malaysian Prime Minister’s, Tunku Abdul Rahman’s, house . 

It houses all about the history of the late Prime Minister who was the Father of Independence. It is a must-visit if you are a history nerd. The house architecture is awesome, and you get to learn more about this wonderful person and his family.

Opening Hours: 10.00 am – 5.00 pm

9. Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir

Aside from the first Prime Minister, you should definitely take a visit to Malaysia’s fourth and ninth Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad’s birth house . 

This place is well-kept to preserve his birthplace and growing condition. There are a lot of old newspaper cuttings, old photographs and a family tree that will keep you interested the whole visit.

10. Pekan Rabu Complex

There are a lot of things to do in Kedah, and one of the most interesting is visiting Pekan Rabu Complex , a flea market. This place offers you a one-stop shopping centre for traditional gifts and crafts, get local snacks, clothing and souvenirs. 

There is also a food court where you can find a lot of different types of food to fill your hungry tummy.

11. Chinatown

Alor Setar’s Chinatown is among the most well-preserved in Malaysia since the 1950s.

 The shophouses are mostly restored with each having its own living quarter, style, decoration, and colour. Here, the main business revenues are printing shops, bicycle repairs, and hardware. 

12. Kuala Kedah Fort

This is the oldest northern Malaysia fort since the 1770s. It is one of the remaining defensive units commissioned by a Sultan that protected Kedah from Siam (now Thailand). 

It is situated next to the Kedah River and the Straits of Melaka. The fort now consists of the remnants of defensive walls, cannons, and a lighthouse.

13. Alor Setar Waterfront

The waterfront along the Kedah River creates a peaceful surrounding if you are looking for a little serene break from the busy city life. It is situated near Chinatown. 

Families and local photographers love this spot and it is a popular Kedah tourist spot.

14. Paddy Fields

As the “rice bowl” of Malaysia, you can enjoy the view of paddy fields around the district, and almost throughout the state. 

This offers a great experience and you can snap some really good photos for the memories.

Sungai Petani Attractions

Other than Alor Setar, Sungai Petani attractions are ones you should not miss as well. This district has a lot to offer, specifically the natural attractions.

1. Kuala Muda Whispering Fish Market

If you have the opportunity to be at a homestay here, don’t miss out on joining in at Kuala Muda Whispering Fish Market . Locals whisper while bidding to buy their mixed fish. It has been a tradition for the locals here. 

The buyers will look at the produce brought up fresh from the water and whisper the bidding price that the fishermen desire. They do not seem to want to change this tradition as it is a calm way of doing business and anyone can bid without having to scream their hearts out.

The highest bidder will get to buy the desired fresh mixed fish! It is a unique norm that you might want to delve into and be part of.

2. Sungai Petani Clock Tower And Zero KM Square

It is not every day that you get to find the Zero Kilometer landmark, and Sungai Petani has one! In addition to that, you can visit the Clock Tower nearby for some great photos and just to chill. This spot is best viewed at night with beautiful and colourful lights.

3. The Carnivall Water Theme Park

This water theme park is situated at Cinta Sayang Resort. 

It has a lot of fun water park activities that you can enjoy with your whole family. This resort is complete with accommodation and restaurants. You just have to book your slot and enjoy playing in the water!

4. Semeling Jetty, Merbok River

Near the Semeling Jetty, you can find the Mangrove Forest Reserve Museum, auditorium, and tourist information centre. 

You can enjoy looking at the untouched mangrove forest by going on a river cruise through the forest along Merbok River. Enjoy the natural swamp as you cruise along the river away from the city view.

5. Arked Tanjung Dawai

Not far from Semeling Jetty, you can visit Tanjung Dawai , a fisherman village. 

This village is well-known for selling fresh seafood, and you can reach here either from Merbok or from Yan. You can buy various seafood from Arked Tanjung Dawai.

6. Merdeka Beach

If you yearn for some very good food, Merdeka Beach has those to offer.

 If you want to just relax and have a breather after a busy working life, try going here. Indulge yourself in various local delicacies perfect with serene beach scenery.

7. Pulau Sayak Village

Situated approximately 30km from Sungai Petani, Pulau Sayak Village is famous for its prawn noodles local cuisine.

It is a must-try in addition to its beautiful panorama. Besides, who doesn’t like nice food accompanied by a nice view, right? I’m all for it!

Yan Attractions

Yan is the smallest municipality of Kedah. Despite that, Yan is famous for its divine nature Kedah attractions. 

1. Mount Jerai

Mount Jerai is the pride of Kedah, the main Yan Kedah attraction, with a height of 1,175 meters , so visiting it is a must! 

Historically, the mountain was once an island called Pulau Serai before the sea levels receded, forming it into a mountain. The Hindus considered this mountain sacred, thus, they built temples from the foothills to the summit. 

2. Seri Perigi Waterfall

If you are into hiking, then, you can check Seri Perigi Waterfall as a hiking destination when you’re in Kedah.

 This waterfall in Kedah is considered one of the tallest, which is more than 100 meters tall. You need to take around 30 minutes to hike to reach the top. 

3. Murni Beach Waterfront

Murni Beach Waterfront is the best Yan Kedah attraction. 

There is nothing much to do here, but if you are looking to just spend some quality time gazing at the beautiful sunset and enjoying good food with your family, this is the place. 

Equipped with complete facilities, you can spend an entire day here. There are food stalls, resting huts, children’s playground, toilets, and changing rooms.

2. Bukit Hijau Waterfall

Bukit Hijau Waterfall is well-known for its seven-level waterfall, and it is situated within Gunung Inas Forest Reserve . 

Historically, there is evidence of the ancient geological formation of cascades which could be from the Cambrian age. Aside from enjoying yourself in the cool waters, you can also snap some good photos while you’re at it!

3. Junjong Waterfall

This waterfall is well-known among the locals of Kulim, Kedah. 

There are stalls which offer a lot of food and snacks. There is also a landscaped park with pools and bridges. The waterfall is not that high, but the view is still amazing.

What To Eat In Kedah

When you are visiting all the Kedah attractions, you should never go hungry. Kedah has different kinds of local dishes that you can enjoy throughout the state. 

Listed below are the most recommended food you should try to fulfil your tummy when you go on a tour around Kedah:

• Seafood Noodles especially Prawn Noodles : Noodles with sweet and spicy gravy with chosen seafood (prawn, crab, or squid)
• Laksa Kedah : A type of noodle dish (thick rice noodle or rice vermicelli) eaten with fish curry, cucumber slices, and onions.
• Gulai Nangka : Jackfruit curry, commonly served with rice
• Air Nira Nipah : The sweet juice of the Nipah plant
• Kuih Karas : A type of crispy dessert that resembles fried vermicelli
• Serabai : A rice flour pancake served with coconut milk and palm sugar

Unique Tips You Should Know When Visiting Kedah

When visiting Kedah attractions, you might want to learn a few tips to win the hearts of the locals. 

They are a friendly bunch of folks and they have a unique dialect. In Kedah, most words end with ‘…q’ sound, where it is fully emphasized. 

Here are some examples:

• Water = ayaq (as in “are- yak ” ); should be “air”
• Hungry = lapaq (as in “lar- pak ” ); should be “lapar”
• Sleep = tidoq (as in “tee-dok”); should be “tidur”
• I/Me = chek (as in “check” ); should be “saya”
• Tell = habaq (as in “har-bak” ); should be “khabar”

Those are some basic words that could probably help you a bit. The dialect might sound harsh for some, but the people sure are not!

About Kedah

The state of Kedah spans approximately 9, 425 sq. km in the northern part of the Peninsular and together with Perlis, Perak and Kelantan, shares a common border with neighbouring Thailand. It is a fairly small state. Its population is about one million primarily Malay, though significant Chinese and Indian minorities can be seen. It is known as the “Rice Bowl of Malaysia” where its rice plains together with Perlis produce more than half of the country’s home grown rice supply. Its state capital is Alor Setar.

Kedah’s early history can be traced from the prehistoric period to the archeological site of Bujang Valley, the early Maritime trade of India, Persia, Arabs to the written works of the early Chinese pilgrims and early Chinese records, the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa or known as the Kedah Annals to the Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah. Kedah was also known as Kedaram, Kidaram, Kalagam and Kataha by the Tamils. It was known as Kalah or Kalaha by the Persians.

Kedah possess numerous islands, legends, historical relics, hill stations and scenic waterfalls. The legendary and famous island Langkawi is just off Kedah’s western shore. It has Bujang Valley, where evidence of the existence of an early civilisation dating back to the 6th century was found with other archeological discoveries. Not to mention its vast paddy fields spans across the backdrop of rolling hills which provides serenity and breathtaking views.

In the 7th and 8th centuries, the region was dominated by Sri Vijaya. It followed by the Siamese until the 15th century, when the Malay sultanate of Melaka came to power. During this period, the Melakan influences were introduced while the dominant aspects of Kedah’s ancient civilisation began to wane.

In the 17th century, Kedah was attacked by the Portuguese when it conquered various parts of Malaysia. In 1821, Kedah fell into the hands of the Siamese and remained under their control until British took over when the Anglo-Siamese Treaty was signed in 1909. Kedah established independence along with the rest of Malaysia in 1957.

As Kedah is quite close to Thailand, some of its cultural traditions, songs and dances have Thai influences in them. Apart from that, even Kedah’s people often bear signs of Thai or Archinese ancestry looks.

Langkawi comprises a group of 99 tropical islands lying off the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The main island is known as Pulau Langkawi. LANGKAWI SKYCAB

Enjoy an exhilarating cable car ride to the top of Gunung Machincang. With a length of 950m, the Langkawi SkyCab has been recognised as ‘The Longest Free Span Mono Cable Car’ by the Malaysia Book of Records.

At the middle and top stations, walking trails and viewing platforms are available to further enjoy the panoramic views. Langkawi SkyCab is situated at the Oriental Village in Burau Bay, about 30 minutes away from Kuah town. After the ride, drop by at the Oriental Village to browse through the assortment of souvenirs.

KILIM GEOPARK

Kilim Geoforest Park is one of the three geoforest parks in Langkawi. Spread over 100 sq. km., this park features a beautiful mix of well-protected green mangrove forests, isolated white beaches and blue lagoons. On the trail, along the calm winding river, you will be exposed to the wonders of the park’s marine ecosystem and flora and fauna like the overhanging Bogak Trees, Brown Eagles, crabs, iguanas and macaques. Enjoy the spectacular view of unique limestone rock formations emerging from the floor of the mangrove swamps and the sea. These fascinating geological wonders have been dubbed the Temple of Borobodur, the Elephant Stone and the Hanging Gardens.

PULAU PAYAR MARINE PARK

This day trip destination is situated in the northern part of the Straits of Malacca, 19 nautical miles south of Langkawi and encompasses the islands of Pulau Payar, Pulau Lembu, Pulau Segantang and Pulau Kaca. The marine park teems with a fascinating diversity of marine life and vegetation. Pulau Payar is the most popular of the islands as its sheltered waters are ideal for snorkelling, diving and swimming. Among the enchanting dive spots is the Coral Garden, an area covered with bright, multi-hued soft corals.

Visitors can get to Pulau Payar from Kuah Jetty by catamaran or speedboat. The ride on the catamaran takes about 1 hour while the speedboat takes about 30 minutes. TASIK DAYANG BUNTING (LAKE OF THE PREGNANT MAIDEN)

Tasik Dayang Bunting will enthrall you with its beautiful surroundings and mysterious past. The name of Langkawi’s largest freshwater lake is attributed to the legend of a lovely fairy princess who married an earthly prince. Her child died shortly after birth, which made her so sad and depressed that she buried the child in the crystal clear waters of the lake.

Before she returned to her celestial abode, she blessed the waters so that any childless maiden who bathed in the lake would conceive thereafter. To reach the lake, one has to get to the Island of the Pregnant Maiden first and then take a short walk through the forest reserve.

ORIENTAL VILLAGE

Overlooking the beautiful Burau Bay, Oriental Village is one of the region’s most unique shopping, cultural and culinary destinations. Specially designed to provide a new concept in resort duty-free shopping, Oriental Village houses souvenir outlets and themed restaurants that reflect Asia’s culinary traditions. The Village is a 15-minute drive from the Langkawi International Airport. While the Village is accessible 24-hours, most tenants operate between 10am to 7pm daily.

KEDAH MAIN LAND

Bujang valley archaeology museum.

Sprawling over 224 km, Bujang Valley is the site of one of Southeast Asia’s oldest ancient civilisations, believed to be more than 2000 years old. More than 50 ancient structures known as candi and close to 1,000 artefacts have been unearthed so far. Some of the candis have been preserved and relocated to the museum grounds. Visitors can gain an insight at the museum gallery or visit the surrounding candis to view these incredible relics up close.

ULU LEGONG HOT SPRINGS

Situated about 22km from Baling, the Ulu Legong Hot springs recreational centre comprises five pools with temperatures ranging between 30 to 60 0 C. Visitors come here to relax and soak in its therapeutic Sulphur-rich waters. It is the only hot springs in the country to operate round the clock. Facilities include a 24-hour cafeteria, gazebos, ladies’ pool, changing rooms dan showers.

TREETOP WALK AND SEDIM RIVER

Stretching 925m atop the forest canopy, the Tree Top Walk in Sedim River Recreation Park is the world’s longest canopy walkway. Enjoy a dramatic view of the surrounding forest with occasional glimpses of birds, gibbons and other wildlife. The Sedim River flows beneath the walkway, where you can enjoy white-water rafting and kayaking.

PADDY MUSEUM

Situated at the foot of Keriang Hill, the Paddy Museum contains exhibits and information relating to the country’s staple crop. A not-to-be-missed attraction here is the revolving platform on the third level, which gives a panoramic 360° view of an astonishingly lifelike mural. As the platform revolves, the mural depicts paddy fields, villages and its surroundings while showcasing the processes involved in paddy harvesting.

DR. MAHATHIR’S MOHAMMAD BIRTH PLACE COMPLEX

Malaysia’s fourth and longest-serving Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, was born in this traditional, one-room wooden house in 1925. Here, you can read all about his life as well as achievements. Items on display include furniture, documents on family genealogy and school photographs. Within the grounds are two exhibition halls, an auditorium and office, a souvenir shop and the first ice factory in Alor Setar.

ALOR SETAR TOWER

The state-of-the-art Alor Setar Tower is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. Standing at 165.5m, it is the 22nd tallest telecommunications tower in the world. The tower is equipped with an observation deck and a revolving restaurant.

SULTAN ABDUL HALIM GALLERY

The Sultan Abdul Halim Gallery is housed in the 87- year old, former Alor Setar high court. It features over 2,000 items from the personal collection of the former Sultan of Kedah. On display are official documents, palace attire and accessories as well as charts depicting the 1,200-year lineage of the Kedah royal family beginning from 1136 to the present. After visiting this gallery, you can walk to nearby attractions like the Balai Nobat, Balai Besar, Masjid Zahir, Balai Seni Negeri, Pekan Rabu, Rumah Merdeka and the Alor Setar Tower.

MASJID ZAHIR

A famous landmark in Alor Setar, Masjid Zahir features distinctive black domes – one main dome and five smaller domes, which represent the five tenets of Islam. The exquisite Moorish architecture of this mosque is similar to mosques in Langkat, North Sumatera. It was built in 1912 by the then Sultan of Kedah and is one of the oldest in Malaysia.

GUNUNG KERIANG CAVES

The Gunung Keriang Caves – Gua Terus, Gua Pelamin, Gua Seribu Bayur and several unnamed ones are among the arresting formations that will appeal to cavers. The caves are about 8km from Alor Setar. Visitors must

ULU MUDA ECO PARK

The Ulu Muda Eco Park is a sanctuary for over 109 species of mammals, 54 species of reptiles and 33 species of fish. Nestled within the vast 120,000-hectare Ulu Muda Forest, it is a safe haven for animals such as elephants, tigers, rhinoceros, seladang, sun bears and tapirs. The park is among the best places for birdwatching as it shelters some 200 bird species including the Red-crowned Barbet, Large Wren Babblers and Hooded Pitta.

Laksa Kuala Kedah

Tickle your tastebuds with this local speciality – a delightful dish made from rice vermicelli noodles and aromatic fish gravy. It is garnished with cucumber, onion and herbs. Unlike other types of laksa, laksa kuala kedah has additional ingredients like eels, spicy shredded coconut and boiled eggs.

This pungent delicacy is made from fish preserved with salt, rice and tamarind slices. The longer it keeps, the better it is said to taste. Fried pekasam can be served with fresh chilli as well as shallots and eaten with rice or glutinous rice. It can also be curried. Pekasam is sold at Pekan Rabu in Alor Setar.

Nasi ulam is a healthy combination of rice, fresh herbs and spices. It is very popular during the fasting month of Ramadan. Gulai rebung or stir-fried bamboo shoot is another delicacy in Kedah.

Head to the coastal areas of Tanjung Dawai for a seafood feast with the freshly caught prawns, fish, clams and more. Grilled fish is a popular item here.

TRANSPORTATION

Kedah, one of the country’s northern gateway, is 450km from kuala lumpur and shares a border with thailand. to get here, you can travel by air, road, rail or sea transportation., getting there.

Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, AirAsia and Malindo Air operate daily flights to Alor Setar from Kuala Lumpur. The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kepala Batas is about 20 minutes’ drive from Alor Setar.

You can take a five-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kedah via the North-South Expressway. Air-conditioned express buses to Kedah can be boarded at the Jalan Duta Bus Terminal and Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Bandar Tasik Selatan, Kuala Lumpur. These buses provide services to Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Gurun, Jitra, Kulim and Bukit Kayu Hitam. Express buses and taxis are also available from all other states in Malaysia to Kedah and vice versa.

KTMB’s electric train or ETS provides daily services from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar. The Senandung Langkawi express train departs from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur and stops at major towns in Kedah such as Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Gurun before proceeding to Haadyai in Thailand. Visitors heading for Langkawi should disembark at Alor Setar or Arau in Perlis and proceed to the respective jetty terminals to arrange their transfers. The border town of Bukit Kayu Hitam is the entry point for visitors who are driving from Sadao, Thailand. There is an Immigration Office and checkpoint at the border crossing that is open from 6.00am to midnight (Malaysian time).

Getting To Langkawi

Malaysia Airlines provides daily direct air services to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur and Penang, while its subsidiary, Firefly, operates daily flights to Langkawi from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang and Penang. Additionally, AirAsia and Malindo Air operate daily flights to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur. If you are in Singapore, you can get here via Silk Air and Scoot Air.

Express ferries provide regular services to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah in mainland Kedah and Kuala Perlis in the neighbouring state of Perlis. The ride from Kuala Kedah takes about 1 1/2 hours. Ferry services to Langkawi are also available from Penang as well as Satun, Thailand.

1. Masjid Zahir, Alor Setar

Masjid Zahir , also known as   Masjid Zahrah , is situated at the heart of Alor Setar and is a prominent feature of the state of Kedah. The colonial-styled mosque is an example of architectural excellence and is designed to reflect the traditions of Islamic ruling of Kedah’s royalty.

However, that’s not the only reason why the mosque is famous. The two mihrabs are the distinctive features of the mosque. The Imam delivers the khutbah (sermons) from the timber minbar positioned on the right side of the inner mihrab on Friday prayers. 

Masjid Zahir is a celebrated historical monument and holds a reputation among history-loving tourists.

2. Menara Alor Setar, Kedah

Menara Alor Setar is a telecommunications tower and a contemporary example of modern architecture. The building is 165.5 meters in height. It is the second-largest tower in Malaysia and holds the rank of the 19 th tallest globally. 

It was constructed with a total cost of RM40 million and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato ‘Seri Dr Mahathir Mohammad (Tun M), on 14 th August 1997. Although it was built to develop telecommunications technology, it soon became famous amongst tourists. 

There is also an Observatory that is located 88 meters high from the site to see the moon to mark the beginnings of Muslim months. The tower also has restaurants and souvenir shops.

3. The Big Clock Tower

The Big Clock Tower is one of the oldest Kedah attractions, and it is an architectural marvel. Though the tower is not so big, and it looks like a lighthouse. The yellow-gold dome shows the richness of Islamic architecture, whereas its white exterior is evidence of colonial architecture. 

In 1912, the clock tower was built to announce prayer times to the residents who live in this area. Even at the present day, the Big Clock Tower works as a timekeeper.

Changlun is a small town in Kedah, also known as “Changlon”, which means the “fallen elephant”. Travel bubble: Kedah will always be top tourist destination – Exco

ALOR SETAR, Sept 23 — The success of the tourism bubble in Langkawi gives an indication that Kedah will always be top tourist destination, said state executive council member Mohd Firdaus Ahmad.

The State Tourism, Arts and Culture, Youth and Sports, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman said the state government took a serious view of standard operating procedure compliance and would ensure that all tourism industry players improved their services.

He said all parties, especially those involved in the tourism sector in the state, should also be prepared to receive the arrival of tourists when the sector is fully reopened soon.

“The state government in collaboration with Kedah Tourism has been formulating and planning a strategy for almost a year to prepare for the reopening of the tourism sector,” he said in the winding-up session of the state legislative assembly sitting today.

Mohd Firdaus said discussions with industry players were also conducted regularly to find effective methods for the implementation of the tourism bubble and the state government was open to ideas, views, suggestions from any party to improve the sector.

Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor in a press conference after the sitting said, the tourism bubble pilot programme was expected to achieve its goal of reviving the tourism sector in Langkawi.

“Alhamdulillah, there is no infection (COVID-19 cases) detected so far after a week, except cases of local transmission.

“I am very grateful and pray that this tourism bubble will be able to achieve its goal of reviving the tourism sector in the state,” he said.

Muhammad Sanusi also expressed the state government’s appreciation to all frontliners including from the Royal Malaysia Police, Health Ministry, Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (RELA) and  Langkawi Municipal Council City of Tourism for their services to ensure the success of the pilot project.

W here the more popular Bujang Valley Archaeological Site has fallen short, Taman Warisan Sungai Batu – a stone’s throw away – may succeed now that it is recognized as the oldest ancient civilization in Southeast Asia.

Artifacts show Sungai Batu was the site with iron smelting activities, several jetties, sunken ships, places of worship and remnants of quarters and a harbour master building some 2,600 years ago.

A decade ago, this undiscovered site was a poultry farm amidst oil palm plantation. In the 5th Century, however, a river measuring 200 metres wide and 30 metres deep once meandered over the land there.

Having two significant archeological sites – Bujang Valley and Sungai Batu – have given birth to the new buzzword; archaeo-tourism. It may be the key to unlock the potentials the two sites have to increase tourist arrival to Kedah.

Kedah Executive Councillor in charge of Tourism Datuk Mohd Rawi Mohd Hamid says evidence from excavation and radiocarbon dating had confirmed Sungai Batu as the oldest ancient civilization in Southeast Asia, older than Angkor Wat which was found in 8AD and Borobudur (12AD).

The site proves that Kedah had reached its heyday not only during the Hindu-Buddish and Islamic periods but also much earlier in 535BC. Today we are proud to share this heritage,” he says.

The challenge now would be to publicise its significance to win over the Federal Government to provide more funds to carry on excavation work and to build modern amenities to attract tourists to visit.

Within a year, an Interpretative Centre and amenities for hologram display with touch button would be installed at the archaeological site. There, Prof Dr Mokhtar Saidin says, visitors can watch and follow the rituals observed by the people during those days.

Dr Mokhtar, who is the Centre for Global Archaeological Research director, says walking platforms would be erected to enable visitors to have a closer view without encroaching on the site.

The site was excavated since 2007 and artifacts such as over two million eight-inch tuyere (a clay pipe used to raise the fi re to 1,200 degree for iron smelting) and mounds which were furnaces were found while sunken ships, 18-metre long, a mast, and many eight-inch iron nails were detected. At any one given time 2,600 years ago, there were at least 10,000 people working in Sungai Batu.

At the Sungai Batu Heritage Park, he says, 12 locals trained in iron smelting will show how iron ores were smelted and this demonstration will be part of the activities in the living culture gallery at the park.

He postulates a hypothesis that Sungai Batu furnaces once supplied high quality iron ingots to India that were used in making chariots and coins by the Roman Empire during the Babylonian era in the 6th Century.

Department of National Heritage Malaysia Commissioner Dr Zainah Ibrahim says the government has recognized Sungai Batu Archeological Site as a national heritage and is providing funds to improve amenities there. She is confi dent that efforts currently taken to submit Taman Warisan Sungai Batu for inscription as an UNESCO World Heritage Site would succeed.

Tour operator Eric Sinnaya, the Malaysia Tourism Council member, has described Taman Warisan Sungai Batu as a ‘gold mine’ waiting to be tapped to bring in more visitors to the state.

He is serious about introducing a new tourist product, which he termed as “the Ancient Iron route” after the likes of the Silk Road.

A more down-to-earth Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association president Uzaidi Udanis cautions against overselling the site as there are no concrete structure unlike those in Angkor Wat and Borobudor to attract tourists. He is positive that given the signifi cance of the site, it would over time attract tourists from the Middle East and Europe. Chinese tourists are already enjoying the various attractions nearby like boathouse stay and mangrove swamp tour near Sungai Batu.

“But I am confident that this site will take off in 10 years’ time when more artifacts such as the sunken ships are unearthed,” he says.

The conference that had attracted international attention to Sungai Batu would be the harbinger of change to promote Kedah Tua internationally and put this oldest ancient civilization in Southeast Asia on the world tourism map during the London Travel Market in November.

Lee administration proposal could make Tennessee tourism department records secret

The proposal would make secret records deemed 'sensitive' by the department commissioner and attorney general. a leading public records advocate says the bill is too broad and lacks accountability..

A newly proposed bill is seeking to allow records from the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development to be exempt from public records laws if the tourism commissioner and attorney general deem them “sensitive.”

The bill, sponsored by Rep. William Lamberth, R-Portland, is modeled after a similar exemption for the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development that was passed in 1988 and would keep records deemed sensitive secret for five years.

Administration officials say the bill is needed to help attract companies to Tennessee but a leading open records advocate in the state said the proposal is overly broad, lacks true accountability and could hurt transparency.

Lamberth said the bill came directly from Gov. Bill Lee's administration and the Department of Tourist Development. As House majority leader, Lamberth regularly sponsors bills part of the Lee administration's agenda.

“They wanted some of the same options that ECD has when they are pursuing a large tourist opportunity for the state,” he said. “Some of those preliminary discussions are not public when it comes to ECD projects, and they wanted the same thing.”

According to Lamberth, he originally looked to “make sure” there was an “intermediary there where you didn't give carte blanche to a department to just make something private.”

“That's why the attorney general was involved,” he said. “But that comes directly from the governor's office, that comes directly from tourism."

Tourist Development spokesperson Amanda Murphy, said the bill would aid the department in conducting business without exposing potential investors' dealings.

"Like any economic development effort, our industry is highly competitive and relies on confidential data to determine the most effective allocation of taxpayer funds," she said. "Tourist Development needs the ability to conduct due diligence without risking the disclosure of sensitive information that could harm our stakeholders' competitive edge or business deals."

Lee spokesperson Elizabeth Johnson similarly described the bill as a necessary measure to protect contract negotiations.

"Creating jobs and greater opportunity for Tennesseans is one of Gov. Lee's top priorities and Tennessee has competitively earned a worldwide reputation for being one of the best places to do business," she said. "Tennessee’s tourism industry is the second largest employer in the state, and we continue to experience record visitor spending. Any breach of confidentiality mid-negotiation is detrimental to potential economic investment in our state, and this bill would provide the Department of Tourist Development with a policy consistent with the Department of Economic and Community Development."

But Deborah Fisher, executive director of Tennessee Coalition for Open government, said the bill was too broad and didn't include any accountability.

"It's particularly concerning from a transparency standpoint, because it gives complete discretion to the commissioner of the department, along with the attorney general, to keep anything confidential that he thinks would be sensitive," she said. "It's just a very broad definition, and very subjective based on what the commissioner feels is sensitive. If you were trying to get a record, there would be no way to challenge it. And as the Attorney General works as the attorney for the commissioner, I just don't see that as an effective backstop at all."

In addition, Fisher said, the bill was far broader than the needs the Lee administration stated.

"If that's what they want to keep confidential—developing contracts—then all they would have to do is write into that exemption," she said. "That would be different. But that's not what the exemption is. The exemption is anything that the commissioner wants to be confidential."

According to the bill, the proposed exemption will not apply to information already made confidential, which includes trade secrets, marketing information and capital plans within the department.

The bill is up for consideration at its first subcommittee hearing on Tuesday.

Destroyed by cyclones, impacted by climate change and neglected by foreign owners – these abandoned island resorts are now an eyesore

A pool lined with green sludge, rotting roofs and termite infested buildings – this derelict island resort has become a sad tourist attraction for all the wrong reasons, and it's not an isolated case.

At least half a dozen resorts along the Queensland coast have fallen to a similar fate.

In the heart of tropical Far North Queensland, the picturesque Double Island was once a thriving hub for holiday-makers including former Hollywood power couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.

The island resort, 30 minutes north of Cairns, even built a gym for actor Keanu Reeves, so frequent were his stays.

But the resort has long been in a state of disrepair, with rotting roofs punctured by falling coconuts and green sludge lining the bottom of the once sparkling pool.

Brad Madgwick offers guided kayaking tours to the island, and recently incorporated the island's decay into his regular marine-life spotting adventures.

"We've always walked the shorelines looking for wildlife, but in the last few years, we have been given permission to go through the resort," Mr Madgwick said.

"The coconuts have taken a toll and the termites are having a good feed, it's sad really because it used to be a very glamorous resort back in the day."

The derelict state of the resort — safari-style tents covered in mould are dotted throughout — is shaping up to be one of the biggest legal battles ever held over an island in Australia.

The Queensland Government's Department of Resources will attempt to strip Hong Kong based billionaire Benny Wu of the island's lease in the Land Court in Cairns within weeks.

Mr Wu's Fortune Island Holding's is accused of non-compliance for failing to bring the facilities up to scratch and open the island to the public.

The day can't come soon enough for some local Palm Cove business owners, although opinions vary about what should happen with the island, if the state government is successful in its proceedings.

"When it was taken over in 2012, it was a thriving business," said local businessman Tony Richards, who would like to see a resort rebuilt.

"Nothing has been done to it since then. It's a complete bulldoze job."

The ABC has contacted Mr Wu for comment.

Paradise lost

Across the Great Barrier Reef, cyclones and neglect have left half a dozen island resorts shuttered and abandoned, with ruined infrastructure and damaged environments.

Brampton Island Resort, off Mackay, was a jewel in Queensland's tourism crown until it was bought by United Petroleum in 2010 for $5.9 million, its ocean side pool now filled with sand.

Lindeman Island in the Whitsundays, once famed for being the first Club Med in Australia, has sat in ruins since it was pummelled by Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

The Singaporean company, Well Start, has since bought the island and pledged to restore it.

Resorts on South Molle and Hook Island have also been closed for years.

The 1980s party paradise, Great Keppel (Woppa) Island off the central Queensland coast, has been laying in ruin for 15 years, with the Queensland government recently announcing a $30 million master plan including provisions for an eco-resort , new sewage system and conservation areas. 

Meanwhile, the beleaguered Dunk Island resort off the coast of Far North Queensland, was also destroyed by Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

There are plans to open "glamping" style accommodation on the island within months, following billionaire Annie Cannon-Brook's purchase in 2022.

Professor Daniel Gschwind, from Griffith University's Institute for Tourism, said abandoned and closed resorts not only had an impact on the Great Barrier Reef's reputation, but Australia's broader tourism brand.

"Globally, the Great Barrier Reef is recognised as an outstanding asset, it's World Heritage listed, which in itself draws a lot of attention," Professor Gshwind said.

"The way Australia manages that asset and presents the asset to visitors is absolutely, critically important for our global reputation."

He said island resorts helped to bring in billions of tourism dollars each year and there needed to be an "expectation that lease holders fulfil their obligations".

However, he said the high cost of maintaining as well as accessing the resorts by plane or barge was impacting on owners to turn a profit, as well as skyrocketing insurance premiums.

"So there are great obstacles to overcome, but the benefit and the value of those islands as a tourism destination really can't be overstated."

Parliamentary inquiry into Queensland islands

Queensland's Transport and Resources Committee held a parliamentary inquiry examining the economic and regulatory frameworks for Queensland's island resorts, tabling a report just over a year ago.

Eighteen recommendations were made to the state government, including cancelling the leases of developers who let the resorts fall to rack and ruin.

Several of the submissions raised concerns about foreign ownership, as well as the impact of climate change, including intense cyclones, on resort infrastructure.

Professor Tim Harcourt, chief economist at the Institute for Public Policy and Governance at the University of Technology Sydney said buying up tropical islands could be seen by some international companies as an attractive proposition.

"They've got to get their money out and they're going to put it somewhere, and buying land is the easiest thing to do," Professor Harcourt said.

He also noted the longevity and success stories of the Hamilton and Hayman Island resorts in the Whitsundays.

The Andrew Forrest-owned Lizard Island, off Cooktown in Far North Queensland has been rebuilt twice due to successive cyclones, and is enjoying strong occupancy numbers.

Orpheus Island and Pelorus Island north of Townsville have also undergone extensive renovations.

Back on Double Island, Mr Madgwick said he would like to see the island returned to its natural splendour.

"I would love to see the island turned into a national park, with a communal kitchen, maybe a caretaker on the island, and to open it up to camping," Mr Madgwick said.

"It's a beautiful island and it should belong to the people."

Shapiro Administration Invests $200,000 in New PIDA Loan to Spur Tourism and Business Growth in Elk County

PIDA has approved $11,428,160 in low interest loans that have resulted in $19,854,839 in private investment and supported 387 created and retained full-time jobs across PA in 2024 so far.

Tourism is one of the largest industries in Pennsylvania, and Governor Shapiro has proposed an $18 million increase in his 2024-25 budget to boost tourism and business marketing efforts.

Harrisburg, PA – Today, Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Rick Siger announced the approval of one new low-interest $200,000 loan through the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) to support tourism, business expansion, and boost the economy in Elk County.

The newly approved loan builds upon Governor Josh Shapiro’s commitment to create a stronger economy across Pennsylvania. Since 2023, PIDA has approved more than $56 million in low interest loans that have resulted in more than $165 million in private investment and created and retained over 1,520 full-time jobs.

PIDA provides low-interest loans and lines of credit for eligible businesses that commit to creating and retaining full-time jobs, as well as for the development of industrial parks and multi-tenant facilities. Loans can be used for: land and building acquisitions; construction and renovation costs; machinery and equipment purchases; working capital and accounts receivable lines of credits; multi-tenant facility projects; and industrial park projects.

“Tourism is one of the largest industries in Pennsylvania generating over $76 billion a year and supporting more than 486,000 jobs,” said Secretary Rick Siger. “The PIDA loan approved today will boost tourism in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds in Elk County and attract tourists from across the nation to this majestic region. The Shapiro Administration is working to transform Pennsylvania into an economic powerhouse and PIDA loans like this one give small businesses the tools to help make that happen.”

Wapiti Woods Lodge, LLC, through the North Central PA Regional Planning & Development Commission, was approved for a fifteen-year $200,000 loan at a 4.00-percent reset interest rate to help to assist with site improvements and construction of a lodge that will feature four bedrooms with a sleeping capacity for eight adults, 2.5 bathrooms, a full kitchen, laundry facilities, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and extensive outdoor seating. This new lodge addresses an existing demand in the market for larger accommodations capable of hosting sizable groups which is currently unfulfilled by Wapiti Woods, LLC, and its ten cabins. The total project cost is $431,950.

Tourism is one of the largest industries in Pennsylvania, generating over $76 billion a year and supporting more than 486,000 jobs. Investing in tourism is a key component of the Governor’s economic development strategy – and the Governor proposed an $18 million increase in his 2024-25 budget to boost tourism and business marketing efforts. The Governor’s 2024-25 budget also calls for significant investments directly tied back to the Commonwealth’s ten-year economic development strategy and issues a strong call to action for partners across all sectors to join in with their support.

Other proposed economic development investments in the Governor’s budget include: $500 million in PA SITES funding to bring more commercial and industrial sites to Pennsylvania; $25 million for the Main Street Matters program to support small businesses and commercial corridors in communities across our Commonwealth; $20 million to support large-scale innovation and leverage Pennsylvania’s best-in-class research and development assets; and $3.5 million to create and launch the Pennsylvania Regional Economic Competitiveness Challenge to incentivize regional growth.
