Chandigarh is the best-planned city in India, with architecture which is world-renowned, and a quality of life, which is unparalleled. As the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh it is a prestigious city. The face of modern India, Chandigarh, is the manifestation of a dream that Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru envisaged and Le Corbusier executed.

Serenity and a city are two diametrically opposite concepts, which however, get belied in the ‘City Beautiful’. Chandigarh is a rare epitome of modernization co-existing with nature’s preservation. It is here that the trees and plants are as much a part of the construction plans as the buildings and the roads. India’s first planned city, is a rich, prosperous, spic and span, green city rightly called “ THE CITY BEAUTIFUL ”.

Welcome To Punjab Tourism | North Western edge of India

department of tourism chandigarh

Deriving its name from five full-bodied rivers–Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Jhelum, and Chenab–which flow through its vast plains, Punjab is representative of abundant things. Located on the north-western edge of India, it is one of the smaller albeit prosperous states of the nation, and home to a lively, hospitable and dynamic people. Widely acknowledged as the cradle of civilization, it is a land of ethnic and religious diversity, having borne and shaped a number of religious movements that include Sikhism, Buddhism and Sufism. The Punjabi language, too, finds its origin in the Indo-European linguistic family that includes Persian and Latin. Naturally replete with fertile soils and rich water sources, it is primarily an agricultural state, and has continually and infinitely contributed towards the food security of the Indian Republic.

Punjab's many festivals–Teej, Lohri, Basant, and Baisakhi, to name some–are celebrations that mirror the farming ethos. Indeed, Bhangra, the traditional dance of Punjab revolves around, and replicates a farmer's daily life. Historically, Punjab has played host to a number of ethnicities, including the Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Afghans and Mongols, thus bestowed with a rich tangible heritage. Reflecting this history are the countless sites that dot the state: impressive forts & palaces, ancient monuments, architectural marvels and many a battlefield.

BSP candidates hope to gain party’s lost political momentum in Himachal Pradesh

The candidates for the lok sabha polls include young activist-cum-advocate anil manget from the shimla parliamentary seat, against congress's vinod sultanpuria and bjp's incumbent mp suresh kashyap..

department of tourism chandigarh

The candidates of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are leaving no stone unturned to regain the party’s lost political momentum, which was evident in the state in the late 2000s when established leaders of the Congress and the BJP preferred to join the BSP.

The candidates for the Lok Sabha polls include young activist-cum-advocate Anil Manget from the Shimla parliamentary seat, against Congress’s Vinod Sultanpuria and BJP ’s incumbent MP Suresh Kashyap.

department of tourism chandigarh

A retired joint director from the state agriculture department, Prakash Chand Bhardwaj, has been fielded from Mandi seat against BJP’s Kangana Ranaut and Congress’s Vikramaditya Singh.

A homemaker, Rekha Rani Chaudhary, belonging to the OBC category, has been fielded from Kangra seat against BJP’s Rajiv Bhardwaj.

Additionally, a retired under secretary from the state electricity department, Hem Raj, has been fielded from Hamirpur against BJP’s Anurag Thakur , who is also a Union Minister and incumbent MP from the parliamentary constituency. The Congress is ayet to announce its candidates from Kangra and Hamirpur.

Festive offer

Advocate Anil Manget, founder of Giripar Sangharsh Committee (GSC), an association struggling for the reservation rights of Hatti community in a large area of Sirmaur district which falls under Shimla parliamentary constituency, says, “I decided to enter into electoral politics when people of my community advised me to take the plunge. Reservation rights of Hattis in Giripar area of Sirmaur were an issue. It was our struggle which forced the state and central government to accept our demands that the community’s reservation rights should not be affected despite the people of Giripar (Hatti community) being given the status of Scheduled Tribe (ST).”

Manget adds, “Development of every district in Himachal from a tourism point of view, promotion of fish farming wherever water is available, creation of job opportunities for the youth of the state and others are part of our party manifesto.” Bhardwaj says, “It is because of the political bankruptcy of the BJP that it had to field a Bollywood star (read Kangana Ranaut) in the election. The Congress did not find a common man and relied on Vikramaditya Singh, the son of six-time CM Virbhadra Singh. People understand these tactics.”

Associate professor Vikas Singh, HOD of the political science department, HPU, Shimla, says, “We can’t ignore the BSP in Himachal Pradesh. As per the 2011 Census, 25-28% of the total population in the state belongs to the SC category on which the BSP relies. Of course, the BSP was never in power in Himachal Pradesh, but there was a time when established leaders like former state tourism minister Major Vijai Singh Mankotia, a five-time MLA from Shahpur assembly segment in Kangra, had joined the BSP in the hope of gaining political power in 2007.

Indeed, the Congress and the BJP dominate a large section of SC/ST/OBC and other reserved communities, but there is a section, be it small, which understands that it is necessary for it to unite under a political umbrella. And this is why the BSP has gained vote share in every election. Though only the Shimla seat is reserved out of the four Lok Sabha constituencies, the party fielded candidates belonging to reserved communities and one OBC on all the four seats on April 21.” Mankotia later joined the BJP in October 2022.

Giving her opinion on the caste politics in the state, Anupama Bharti, HOD of the department of sociology and social work, HPU, Shimla, says, “The current scenario is different. The voters in the reserved seats – be it a Vidhan Sabha seat or a Lok Sabha one – were largely dominated by the Congress and the BJP. The BJP influences the voters in the lower belt, including Una, Hamirpur, certain parts of Solan, Kangra, Nahan and other districts. The upper Himachal, which includes Shimla, Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti, Chamba and other districts, is largely dominated by the Congress.”

Kehar Singh, former state president of the BSP, says, “The Himachal Pradesh unit of the BSP had played a significant role in fetching the tag of a national party for the BSP in the 2000s. In 2012, the party had fielded candidates on all the 68 Vidhan Sabha seats. At least 12 of our candidates were defeated with a margin of just around 600 to 1,000 votes. At that time BSP supremo Mayawati had special focus on Himachal Pradesh.”

Kehar Singh has left the party citing differences with its top leadership. He has now decided to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Kangra as an Independent candidate.

However, Narain Azad, the current president of Himachal Pradesh BSP, says, “People are fed up with the Congress and the BJP. In Mandi, they are debating on irrelevant issues, that is, ‘who eats what’, ‘the religion in danger’ and other similar subjects. There is no talk about development. This time our candidates will make a visible impact on the state politics. No doubt all our candidates will perform well, the party has high hopes from our Shimla candidate (Anil Manget). We are hoping that the BSP supremo (Mayawati) will also visit the hill state for campaigning. Her visit will be confirmed next month.”

Of the 68 Vidhan Sabha constituencies, 17 seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, while three constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates. Mandi and Kangra parliamentary seats have the maximum reserved assembly segments.
