Die Antwood, formed in 2008, are a South African rap rave trio, hailing from Cape Town. The musicians perform predominantly alternative hip hop music, infused with elements of rave, and their alternative image comes from a counterculture movement called zef.

The trio released their first album $O$ independently without a record label back in 2009, and since it received much attention and critical acclaim, especially due to their music video Enter the Ninja, the band have achieved much international success. The band consists of Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, and DJ Hi-Tek, and also when the band tour, Vuilgeboost, an additional DJ accompanies and plays alongside the band.

The band’s success encouraged them to form their own record label, which has now been running fruitfully since 2010, and they have released their most recent albums under the label, Zef Records. Ninja, the band’s lead vocalist had been part of the hip hop culture and scene since a young age, and experimented extensively with recording and music production, assisting the group when they made the decision to form their own label.

As well as their own music, they have collaborated with other artists such as Roger Ballen, the photographer who inspired the zef movement, and heavily assisted with the successful Enter The Ninja. The band have toured to arena venues, played intimate venues, and still tour today, performing selections of their music from Pitbull Terrier, all the way back to their earliest work.

Die Antwoord at Metropolis - 06/06/14 Considering the show was sold out months in advance, it should come as no surprise that Die Antwoord were welcomed by a very vocal, and very eclectic, crowd at the Montreal Metropolis on Friday night. On tour promoting their recently released third LP Donker Mag, the South African rap-rave trio were in fine form. Whereas their first Montreal gig at Le National, a double bill that included New York noise pop duo Sleigh Bells, saw the crowd in discovery mode, this third outing was filled to the brim with Die Antwoord adepts. After over 20 minutes of orchestral music and religious chants, Die Antwoord’s unsung hero DJ Hi-Tek sauntered out to perform DJ Hi-Tek Rules before being joined by Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja, clad in neon orange glow in the dark tracksuits, who jumped straight into Fok Julle Naaiers. As soon as they kicked off Wat Kyk Jy? though, you knew this was going to be an all outrager of a show. The crowd was already sold from the get-go and they didn’t even need to try, but the trio didn’t let up once during the hour and thirty minutes they performed. The peppered their performance with a couple of shouts of “MONTREALLLL” (funnily enough the first time they were in Montreal, Ninja made it clear he had no clue where he was) and a few French words, but the night was all about the beats and the rhymes. Two dancers jumped onstage during Wat Pomp and stayed for most of the night, which was a great addition but hardly necessary as the trio was entertaining enough on its own. The sheer energy they were giving kept the crowd jumping throughout the entire performance, especially during standout hit I Fink U Freeky. Over 2300 fans shouting “jump motherf*cker, jump motherf*cker, jump!” while jumping up and down is quite the sight to see. While a large portion of the show was dedicated to past hits, they did manage to squeeze in a few new tracks including standouts Pitbull Terrier, which lends itself particularly well in a live setting, and Happy Go Sucky F*cky, which was positively bonkers. After a short rave interlude, Die Antwoord were back on stage for a one track encore of their earliest hit Enter The Ninja, which had the whole room chanting with arms in the air. Friday’s performance was a perfect showcase of what Die Antwoord does so well: themselves.

The Die Antwoord show at Ths Shrine was nothing short of amazing. The opening act was "Lil2Hood" who did a dj set that rocked. The music changes from Rage against the Machine to Crime Mob and finishes with a nod to the late singer of Linkin Park. She is full of energy and awesome.

The opening of the show was dramatic music and lighting and they opened with "We have candy". The visuals were beautifully choreographed with the pumping bass and awesomeness of "God" aka DJHITek. The dancers were unbelievably good.

Yolandi ruled the stage with numerous costume changes and gave a little speech about her Gucci dress. She is full of spunk and attitude on songs like "Daddy" and "Fat Faded Fuck".

Ninja had an awesome presence and energy. Sixteen Jones made an appearance and introduced a song where Ninja comes out dressed in a black suit. He performed "Enter the Ninja" and "Zef Boner" and even staged dived a few times.

The show was 10 out of 10 in performance and visuals. I would recommend for anyone to see them if given the chance.

It was completely what I expected it to be. DJBJ had the show for about an hour and thirty minutes to start, which was cool and all, but after that it was pretty moderate and the setup took forever.

However, when the show started, it was a thrill. Started with eerie screens, then went to epic rhythms when GOD entered the scene, and then it was all energy after.

Nonstop, song after song, songs mixed and blended, epic drops, and so much energy was being displayed.

Sound was a bit off, but I could blame that on The Fillmore's odd way of carrying sound throughout the place. Overall, Die Antwoord is a niche thing to be interested in and this showing would be perfect for those who did not know them, to know them.

Short (1h15min) but very focused and intense show. Would have expected a bit more from them. Especially since they always give the impression they're like the anti-music establishment guys (see their Lady Gaga diss in the video of Fatty Boom Boom - which is brilliant by the way).

So a bit disappointed. Gave me a little "take the money and run"-feeling.

But... the energy of their show is overwhelming. Keeps you dancing and moving the whole time. Definitely a must-go for fans and for people who like their beats hardcore.

Die Antwoord are ridiculous. They have such filthy shows. They show pictures of dicks and vulgar images on their projections and have awesome badass outfits. The rapping is spot on and they sound like their recorded music. They bring energy and rudeness to the stage. Even a crowd who does not know their music will be jamming, or at least be entertained and curious, if not offended. If you are a fan of their unique music, definitely go to their concert. It will not let you down, and you will be around people of your kind ;P

Absolutely amazing show. This is everything I expected from tool (except maynard doing anything of course). The visuals top notch. These actually accentuated the show, they were not the show. Sound quality was off the hook. The bass rivaled the main room at the ministry of Sound. An unbelievable feat on a travelling show held in a monstrous hall. Ninja jolandi and the crew absolutely dominated the stage and made for a fantastic event. I can't wait to see them again.

Die Antwoord was amazing. Great performance, spot-on vocals, killer music. The opening DJs, however, were TERRIBLE. Pretty sure it was just the Die Antwoord backup dancers randomly clicking on Spotify. No sense of how to mix songs or transition cleanly between tracks. I would have rather seen Die Antwoord an hour earlier than being forced to sit through that garbage.

Seriously the best concert I have ever been to.. über high, nonstop energy. Their set was on the short side (1 hr 15 min) but that is very understandable with no breaks/stalling in between songs and immediately moving from one song to the next. They are amazing live and I would recommend to anyone who even just remotely enjoys their music.

Die Antwoord Announce “Final” Album, New World Tour Plans

South African troublemakers Die Antwoord have announced a new album called The Book Of Zef , which they’ve said will be their “final” full-length effort.

The follow-up to last year’s Mount Ninji And Da Nice Time Kid , the new record is set for release later this year, but is without a set release date at the moment.

Die Antwoord have also announced a world tour to go along with the release of The Book Of Zef , but it only includes dates in Europe and the US at the time of writing. View all their current tour dates, below.

The duo denied break-up rumours last year, before performing in Australia as part of the Origin NYE festival .

Die Antwoord: The Rolling Stone Interview

After years of tireless self-pimping, Ninja and Yo-landi finally get personal about fucking with the fame game and finding the answer Sundays are non-stop action for the “guards” on the hustle for a few rands in the car parks of Jo’burg’s Zoo Lake and as soon as I step out of my car with Die

After years of tireless self-pimping, Ninja and Yo-landi finally get personal about fucking with the fame game and finding the answer

Sundays are non-stop action for the “guards” on the hustle for a few rands in the car parks of Jo’burg’s Zoo Lake and as soon as I step out of my car with Die Antwoord, one steps into our path. He’s about to make his play for how well he’s going to look after my car when he stops in his tracks and claps the sides of his legs. “I know you,” he tells Ninja and Yo-landi through a toothless grin. “I saw you in the magazine.” Later at Moyo, where we’re drinking (beer, vodka and a variation of Long Island Tea) and doing Die Antwoord’s first ever proper South African interview, we talk about the imminent release of TEN$ION.

Click here to win a signed, limited edition Evil Boy vinyl

The album’s got Die Antwoord’s global fanbase salivating in anticipation, an indication of how much the group is welcomed internationally as tellers of a new story. Possessed of a defiant punk zeal, they are seen as unapologetic performers whose two-fisted punch impact – especially in their incendiary live performances – is entertainment as thrilling as that of any other duo that comes to mind. yes, the White Stripes included.

It seems as good a moment as any to bring up the South African critics who accuse the group of cultural appropriation (or worse) and spend hours analysing why two white South Africans shouldn’t be stepping over the border into Mitchell’s Plain or Fietas to mine the lives of those who reside there.

“You know that car guard who was at your car?” Yo-landi says, pretty emphatically. “That’s our guy. Talk to the people who actually bump our shit. You’ll find them fascinating. They are in every one of our music videos. Come to set and ask them why they like Die Antwoord. It’s not a secret.”

By this stage, Ninja – a few Moyo speciality cocktails in – can’t resist.

“Fuck the no-game-having intellectuals out there, Di,” he says, arching his eyebrows. “Our style is straight up Malema versus Zuma… We appeal to the man in the street. We run the exact same campaign as Zuma and Malema do. We make pop music. We don’t make intellectual music. Our shit is hostile- takeover shit. What the fuck you going to do about it? Nothing!”

The truth is, Die Antwoord don’t give a fuck. Not in a pretend kind of way – they really don’t give a fuck. It’s sometimes a hard attitude to swallow but it’s the by-product of a consuming artistic dedication – their galloping, unfettered talent and ruthless loyalty to their imagination are the sole boundaries. In this, they are squarely in the tradition of Dali, Kraftwerk, Gilbert & George, John and Yoko, and, of course, Eminem.

I know this because Ninja and Yo-landi are close friends of mine and our seven-year-old daughters are best buddies. I’ve also known Ninja since the Managing Director of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Jay Savage – my daughter’s father – first signed him to a publishing deal when he was a teenager. Ninja told Interscope Records, “Jay’s the guy who first told me 17 years ago that I was good and so I told my folks, ‘There’s a guy in an office who thinks I’m good.'” That conversation took place in Los Angeles early in 2010, back in the first flush of the group’s now-terminated relationship with the label. Call me biased because of all of this – there’s a good chance it’s true.

But it’s for this reason that I’ve seen, close-up, how Yo-landi and Ninja push themselves, coaxing every detail – visual, sound, ambience – to perfection before letting it out of their grip. Indeed, Die Antwoord’s greatest extravagance remains the work – the rap, the elusive rhyme, the next video, the tour (Ninja promises a “freak-mode experience” for this upcoming one), the exhibition, the movie (there’s more than one inked for 2012), the toys, the art. I know, too, that it’s really not been that long since Ninja and Yo-landi were living (for 10 years, five of those with daughter Sixteen) in a one-room flat, on the financial knife-edge but not once considering working for quick cash in the artistic-compromise hell of advertising.

If you want to know what it’s been like for Ninja and Yo-landi over the past few years, listen to the track on TEN$ION titled “So What?”, which is just one on an album chock-full of deeply personal songs. “We break it down and say what’s happened since we went from nowhere to where we are now,” Ninja says of the track: “Rapped for 20 years, never made a cent/Borrowed money from my mom to pay the rent/Now how’m I gonna get out of this mess/Yo- landi shows me two stripes on the fucking piss-test/Broke-ass Ninja gonna be a daddy/Little baby Ninja gonna need some nappies.”

TEN$ION is the album that Die Antwoord have staked everything on.

Because creative control is an absolute for the pair, not to be traded or compromised, they walked away from a million-dollar offer from Interscope. Die Antwoord have now set up a new-style deal to release TEN$ION through their own label, Zef Records, in association with the Good Smile Company (a Japanese company that is also making Die Antwoord toys), and Downtown Records N.Y.C., which is handling the marketing and distribution for the record worldwide, ensuring it gets into the major retail channels. High demand for TEN$ION globally is also seeing gigs stacking up faster than European debt, with Die Antwoord starting their 2012 world tour in the U.S. and Canada before moving to Australia, new Zealand, Europe and Japan.

Russia, Mexico and Israel are among the new territories Die Antwoord are likely to perform in this year.

In making their recent moves, Die Antwoord have been in close contact with their U.S.-based manager, Tony Ciulla, who has shepherded Marilyn Manson’s career for over a decade, including through the Columbine blowout. So when Ninja and Yo-landi decided they were not a creative match with Interscope after all, nor willing to put up with any interference in the content of their songs, Ciulla was the one to convey the message to Jimmy Iovine and his team.

So relieved were Ninja and Yo-landi to have cut ties with “Into-Coke Records” as Ninja now calls the label, in reference to allegations that a cocaine ring used its L.A. offices to ship the drug, that in late 2011 they took TEN$ION back to the studio and wrote the final track for the record, “Hey Sexy”. The foundation of “Hey Sexy” is a sample of music by British electronic innovator Delia Derbyshire. She was the creator of the electronic recording of Ron Grainer’s Doctor Who theme, one of the most recognisable TV themes, and countless other soundscapes. “It’s totally mystical,” Ninja says. “The sample comes from the ’60s. The song’s an enchanting, hardcore psychedelic hip-hop freak out.”

Like much of TEN$ION, “Hey Sexy” is high-strutting pop. In fact, so hot on pop are Die Antwoord this time around that Ninja sings on “Baby’s on Fire”. “It’s like our 5FM track,” he says. “Me just doing the hook – I was busting some Tom Jones shit. Yo-landi’s rhyming is so pop, so tight.”

But don’t be fooled: along with DJ Hi-Tek’s beats (his presence more commanding and more fully absorbed than on $O$), TEN$ION’s real weapon is Ninja’s razor-sharp rapping and Yo-landi’s increasingly shrewd and assured delivery – always transversing lyrical territory most contemporary rappers or “stars” won’t touch.

“Music used to be about people not giving a fuck,” Yo-landi tells me as we get deeper into our interview. “We’re taking it back there.”

Die Antwoord: Documentary tells their side of allegations

Die Antwoord is a controversial hip-hop band. Their documentary ZEF addresses previous abuse claims. Here’s an update.

Francois Jansen

Die Antwoord is a controversial hip-hop band , consisting of Waddy ‘Ninja’ Tudor Jones and Yolandi Visser.

They released their first album in 2008, however, the band’s obscene lyrics and ‘zef’ style choices soon attracted attention. Die Antwoord have featured many other musicians, including G-Boy, Slagysta, Isaac Mutant, HemelBesem, and Jack Parow.

In 2022, band members faced allegations of abuse from their adopted son Gabriel ‘Tokkie’ du Preez. However, the band and their agent immediately denied these allegations.

What happened to the story?

Waddy and Visser officially address the controversy in their documentary.

Here’s what you should know.

Die Antwoord: Documentary tells their side

ZEF: The Story of Die Antwoord is meant to be watched as an origin story , taking viewers back to the band’s early days.

The documentary includes rare footage from early gigs, exclusive music from Visser’s musically experimental days, and more. DJ Hi-Tek and Jack Black also make cameo appearances.

It also addresses their side of the controversy.

According to Die Antwoord, the allegations against them aren’t true.

The documentary urges Gabriel ‘Tokkie’ du Preez to ‘stop taking drugs’, which they claim corrupted their originally amicable relationship.

According to the documentary’s footage, they’re still willing to support Tokkie, however only if he proves that he’s sobered up.

Die Antwoord: Controversies

Die Antwoord aren’t strangers to controversy; in fact, it appears like they’ve made friends with it.

The band started as MaxNormal.TV, later evolving into the ‘zef’ aesthetic.

The documentary claims that Waddy fashioned himself against ‘zef’ after Yolandi was attracted to a ‘zef-looking’ guy.

Die Antwoord aren’t popular with conservatives, who their lyrics have deliberately poked fun at.

The band released new material in 2023, including Babaji and Land of Honey . Singles released just before their 2024 EU/UK Tour. More songs might still be on the way.

Do you believe some of the controversy has been made up?

Do you think their documentary lays past issues to rest?

Die Antwoord: EU & UK Tour 2024

Die Antwoord resurrected their aesthetic in time for an EU and UK tour.

Shows brought the band to locations over Europe, including Paris and London . According to the documentary, the band reunited after going through difficult personal issues.

They’ve scheduled a continuation of the tour later this year.

US Tour Scheduled

Reddit fans have asked if there’s a United States tour .

The answer appears to be yes, with fans believing tour dates to be announced in December this year.
