Dirty heads is a reggae–punk fushion band out of Huntington Beach, California, US formed in 1996. The founding members, MC, Jared “Dirty J” Watson and vocalist/guitarist, Dustin “Duddy B” Bushell met at a party in high school.

Bushell was in a punk band and had recorded some hip-hop demo tapes and the two started collaborating, recording in Bushells garage. They created their blend of pop-punk, reggae and hip-hop that was to see them through their recording career under the name “Dirty Head”, which was apparently the name they earned from their family members in their garage days.

Before long they had formed a full band with other members, percussionist Jon Olazabal, drummer Matt Ochoa, and bassist David Foral. They were scheduled to release their first album, “Any Port in a Storm” with Warner Brothers but decided they’d stick it to the big record label and went with EMG.

The first single, “Lay Me Down”, featuring Rome Ramirez from Sublime with Rome, got them a Number 1 slot on the Billboard Alternative Song Chart for 2010.

The rest of the album was a symposium of big wigs including Beatles sessioner and R&B multi-instrumentalist, Billy Preston, Vandals drummer, Josh Freese and reggae singer Tippa Irie.

Dirty Heads began to tour regularly, supporting the likes of Unwritten Law, 311 and Matisyahu.

After a recording hiatus, they put out “Cabin by the Sea”, which also hosted a bunch of cameos including Kymani Marley on “Your Love”, a reappearance of Rome Ramirez on “Mongo Push”, Matisyahu on “Dance All Night”, and hip-hop veteran and cameo machine Del the Funky Homosapien on “Smoke Rings”.

Their studio album, “Sound of Change”, debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart, with the single “My Sweet Summer” drawing in a new electronic infusion to their rootsy reggae sound, resulting in a dolled-up dancehall number with a melancholic undercurrent, its chorus channeling some the jilted blues tracks of the 1960s, perhaps most recognizably Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”.

Live reviews

The Dirty Heads are quintessential band to listen to. Their music defines the ”laidback, at the beach, with the year round perfect weather” atmosphere of Southern California. Being a born and raised Southern Californian I was so excited when I found out they were part of the lineup at my university’s winter music festival, I knew that I needed to see them live. Despite my making a big deal and rushing my friends to get to campus to catch the Dirty Heads, I missed about half their set. BUT…they were so good that it is still one of the most memorable performances I have ever seen.

While we were waiting in line to get into the performance area we were able to catch the tail end of “Believe” because their stage was right by the entrance. By the time we reached the back of the crowd, they had started their rendition Rolling Stone’s “Paint it Black.” And while nothing compares to the original, putting their own unique brand of reggae-ska-punk sound made it one of the best I had ever heard.

They closed with “Lay Me Down” which even Duddy B had said, “we’re going to close with the obvious song that you all know best…” This definitely hyped up the crowd even without the actual presence of Rome (his vocal tracks were present however). Throughout the entirety of the song, the audience sang along to every word, and Duddy B’s vocal really could have been enough.

The concert was amazing! The venue was amazing! The guys from the band are amazing!!! I could not have been more pleasantly surprised with how great the show was. The venue was very small and intimate. The entire crowd was singing along with every song. There were people from all over the world, American's, French, British, Germans. A ton of people flew in just for the concert. The warmth and energy from the band could not have been better. It felt like an impromptu concert at someone's backyard barbecue rather than a real professional concert. It was a great night all the way around. I would definitely recommend seeing them. And their opening band Magnus Major was a HUGE serendipitous moment! They weren't even on the bill and they blew me away. They are also great guys, and definitely worth the money for the show, their cd's and t-shirts. I would see them again in a heartbeat!

The Cabooze outdoor venue is very spacious and inviting and was a great place for the Dirty Heads to play. Being a long-term fan of the Dirty Heads, seeing them finally play live was everything I hoped it would be. The energy they brought to the stage was phenomenal and their connection to their fans was amazing. Speaking of the fan base, this crowd ranged from 20s-70s and was by far the most diverse crowd I've seen at a concert before. There were a few downsides to the concert however. Three opener bands for the dirty heads seemed like a lot being the concert started at 5:30pm and went until around 10:00pm. The openers were fantastic themselves and I'm glad that I was introduced to some more great artists, but I would have liked to see the headliner, the Dirty Heads, have a little more stage time. Overall, it was a compete joy and very uplifting concert to attend. 7.8/10

Aaaahhhh, awesome to hear them live! Incredible voices! The songs ive been listening to for years! Um, about that, not, repeat not thrilled with the setlist! No Moon Tower, Cabin By The Sea, Red Lights, Celebrate???? The show was over before 11?? Having read the setlists, up to the Catalyst in Santa Cruz last week.....um, weird setlist! The Fox Theater is such a comfy place and they have a great staff! We upgraded to VIP, cause why not! Loved seeing them! Another experience off the music bucket list!!

The show was completely amazing. Dirty J and Duddy B made the show so entertaining and lively. They even played 5 new songs from their new album and it was awesome.. I think people were impressed how many lyrics I knew. I was in general admission and I still could see well and get into it like the band did. After this performance I plan on seeing them every year on all their upcoming tours. Completely amazed by them and so happy that I got to finally see them live!!

It was an awesome show as always. The venue was amazing, first time attending a concert at Highmark Stadium. Weather was great. One tiny complaint, and it's not really a complaint. I just wish there were less bands playing, 4 bands in one night is a lot and leaves such a tight time crunch. All the bands there were amazing and I wouldn't be able to choice which one had to go. IDK. Just a suggestion.

The Dirty Heads were so rad! I got there about two hours early to get a good spot, and it was worth it! I was in the very front row and their set was amazing. I love their vibe and sound, they were great! After the show we got posters and CDs signed by them, I even got pictures with them! They were all so nice and down to earth, these guys are definitely worth seeing live.

First time I've had the pleasure of seeing this nasty wicked band. I missed them in April because I was at Red Rocks watching Slightly Stoopid... I know. Shitty right? However, I told myself I wouldn't miss them again and Pepper is always on point. Great show. Nice venue, shit beer and security fucking blew nuts. But I'll continue to not miss Dirty Head shows!

Weave.0’s profile image

Music was good, enjoyed the venue until they came on, then the money spent on front row seats was worthless, the bouncers quit keeping people from blocking the view. Would have loved to hear more of the Dirty Heads and less opening bands. Four hours of live music was good. Three of them being bands I don't care about, not good.

About Dirty Heads : With over One Billion streams to date, Dirty Heads have successfully fused hip-hop, reggae, and rock all with some South Cali attitude. The group formed in 2003 when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills, and with percussionist Jon Olazabal, an acoustic trio version of Dirty Heads began playing shows and building an audience. The Dirty Heads first struck gold with the album, Any Port in a Storm (2008). The deluxe edition following in 2010 featured the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome. The song would top Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart just before the summer of 2010 and has since deemed itself an RIAA gold-certified smash.

Building on their success over the release of three additional albums, Dirty Heads enlisted a bevy of industry hitmakers to work on their self-titled 2016 follow-up, which — thanks to its mainstream appeal — again charted high on the Billboard Top 200. The following year saw the band drop its sixth studio album, Swim Team, featuring the RIAA gold-certified single “Vacation.” Also included on the album was the track “So Glad You Made It,” featuring 311’s Nick Hexum. The single “Listen to Me” arrived in early 2019 and was later included on Dirty Heads’ Dave Cobb-produced seventh album Super Moon.

Over their 16 year career they have built a network of devoted fans through their relentless touring schedule and innovative approach to merch and partnerships, including helping to raise over $98,000 for NRDC and The David Suzuki Foundation in 2018.

About Slightly Stoopid

Since 1994, Slightly Stoopid has continued to be a musical brotherhood. Founded by Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald, two musicians determined to succeed on their own terms, the pair of long-time childhood friends, has created a multi-genre fusion of rock, reggae, and blues with hip-hop, funk, American folk, metal, and punk. They remain unwavering in their principles of independence, honoring their diversity of influences and mentors, and furthering their inherited legacy of the Southern California sound. Slightly Stoopid has built a sweeping legacy for itself, continuously expanding in diversity and repertoire. Warriors of the road, their touring has grown exponentially both domestically and internationally with sold-out headlining dates across the world, and festival appearances at famed events such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, New Orleans Jazz Fest, ACL, Outside Lands, and Cali Vibes amongst countless others.

Thirty years into the journey, the prolific collective has much to celebrate; the band founded their own record label, Stoopid Records, garnering the platinum single “Closer To The Sun,”, and gold singles “2am” and “Collie Man,” and over one million physical catalog sales. They have worked with an array of collaborators and guest artists including Snoop Dogg, Bob Weir, Stephen Marley, Cypress Hill, G-Love, Barrington Levy, Chali2na, Karl Denson (Rolling Stones), Don Carlos (Black Uhuru) & Rashawn Ross (Dave Matthews Band).   The entrepreneurial spirited band also created and continue to curate their annual sold-out Closer to the Sun destination music festival in Mexico (2024 will mark its 10th year), and have launched a line of unique, high-quality cannabis products under the guise of ‘Stoopid Strains’, along with their “Tangie Summer Haze” lager, a beer collaboration with Buzz Rock Breweries in Southern California, Website | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | Facebook

About Dirty Heads

Since 2001, Dirty Heads have mixed hip-hop, reggae, and rock to create a unique sound that fully embodies their Southern California roots and resonates with audiences around the globe.

Dirty Heads are currently out-streaming some of the biggest alternative acts in the U.S., with

over 1.31 MILLION digital track sales and 2.7 BILLION on-demand streams since 2018. Dirty Heads also have over 2.4 million unique monthly listeners on Spotify.

The band’s global appeal reached new heights in 2021, when their hit “Vacation” (originally released in 2017) garnered over six billion views and streams across social media via the ubiquitous #VacationTransition challenge that originated organically with users on TikTok.

The group formed when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills, and later with percussionist Jon Olazabal, drummer Matt Ochoa, and bassist Dave Foral, Dirty Heads began building an immense audience.

In 2008, Dirty Heads released their acclaimed album Any Port in a Storm, with a deluxe edition following in 2010. The deluxe version featured the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome. The song reached number one on Billboard’s Alternative Songs in May 2010, and nine weeks later it established a record as the song with the longest stint atop the chart for an independently released title.

They followed up two years later with Cabin by the Sea and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. This, in turn, led to an entire acoustic album in 2013 called Home: Phantoms of Summer. Dirty Heads’ next album, Sound of Change, would prove to be a breakthrough for the now-veteran band, debuting at number eight on the Billboard Top 200 while topping the Independent and Alternative Albums charts upon its May 2014 release.

Building on their renewed success, Dirty Heads enlisted a bevy of industry hitmakers to work on their self-titled 2016 follow-up, which — thanks to its mainstream appeal — again charted high on the Billboard Top 200. The following year saw the band drop its sixth studio album, Swim Team, featuring the singles “Vacation,” in its original form, and “Staloney.”

Inspired by current events and the fan interpretations of their music in the #VacationTransition challenge, the band went into the studio to work on new music. In 2021 Dirty Heads released The Best Of Dirty Heads compilation, which included a new collaboration with Travis Barker and Aimee Interrupter of The Interrupters. The band also released their highly anticipated 8th studio album Midnight Control in August 2022 which featured 10 all-new songs including their take on Joe Walsh’s 1978 hit “Life’s Been Good.”

In 2023 Dirty Heads released the digital deluxe version of their album Midnight Control, featuring 23 tracks including acoustic versions of hit songs “Rescue Me,” “Life’s Been Good,” and “Island Glow,” Lo-Fi versions of 3 album tracks, 3 unreleased songs and more in addition to all 10 tracks from the original album. Featured artists include Monsieur Periné, Ivy Miller (Ivuss) and Alex Vince.

This summer, Dirty Heads performed their Top 5 hits “Life’s Been Good” and “Rescue Me” on the Today Show. Before the performance, Hosts Hoda & Jenna presented the band with a RIAA platinum plaque for their hit “Vacation,” acknowledging sales of more than 1 million digital downloads since its release BY BETTER NOISE MUSIC. The band’s take on Eagles founding member Joe Walsh’s classic “Life’s Been Good” has been streamed over 17 million times since its release and climbed to the Top 5 on the Mediabase Alternative chart. Dirty Heads also completed 37 dates on their Island Glow Summer Tour with Lupe Fiasco, Yelawolf, G. Love & Special Sauce, Tropidelic and Bikini Trill.

Dirty Heads at The Stage AE

Stage ae, pittsburgh, pennsylvania.

Prepare for a blend of island vibes, reggae, hip hop, and rock to invade Stage AE this Tuesday, the 5th of July, as the Californian reggae rock band Dirty Heads stops at the famous Pittsburg venue for their "Let's Get It Kraken" tour. Catch "Dirty J" and the rest of his band for a 2-hour show filled with feel-good music and familiar tunes such as "My Sweet Summer," "Lay Me Down," "Stand Tall," and "Vacation," among many others. Secure your tickets now and see the band along with SOJA, Tribal Seeds, and Artikal Sound System as special guests in an incredible summer night of music and celebration. Get your tickets now!

Taking inspiration from their California brothers Sublime, Dirty Heads found success in the late 2000s by mixing hip-hop, reggae, and rock along with that laid-back South Cali attitude. With the initial goal of producing a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves, the Jared Watson-led band was able to build an audience and gained a significant following. Thanks to the sense of freedom found in their music that somehow reminds people of Sublime, Pepper, and Iration — but with their original Dirty Heads vibe.

Being active in the music scene for more than 15 years, Dirty Heads has some significant hits under their belt. Just last year, the band released a Greatest Hits Album, a 12-track album that featured their famous songs such as "Vacation," "Dance All Night," "Lay Me Down," "My Sweet Summer," and eight other favorite tunes.

This summer, the band is taking the road for a 2022 US headlining tour dubbed "Let's Get It Kraken." The tour will kick off on June 24th in Seattle, with subsequent stops in New York City, Austin, and Las Vegas before concluding on August 12th in Chicago.

Artikal Sound System, the reggae band, based out of South Florida, will open for the band in their Stage AE stop this Tuesday, July 5. The American reggae bands SOJA and Tribal Seeds will also hop in the lineup as special guests to the show. SOJA is a Grammy-award-winning band that is famous for their songs "Rest of My Life," "She Still Loves Me," "True Love," "You and Me," and many others. Tribal Seeds, on the other hand, is a San Diego-native band that was formed in 2005, who are best known for their songs "In Your Eyes," "Dark Angel," "The Garden," "Beautiful Mysterious," and "Island Girl."

With the inclusion of these incredible bands, we can expect that this is going to be one of the best reggae-rock concerts this summer. Get your tickets now to join in the fun! See you there.

Paso Robles, CA – March 28, 2022 – Dirty Heads will bring their hybrid alternative sound and good vibes to amphitheaters nationwide this summer, including a stop at Vina Robles Amphitheatre, Friday, Aug. 5 . Follow the map to find our hidden treasure, GRAMMY-nominated SOJA who will be joining this summer’s tour. Destined to be a great night of Dirty Heads’ signature alt rock / reggae / and hip-hop stylings, the 24-date tour will kick off June 24th and run through August 12th. Tribal Seeds, Artikal Sound System, and Elovaters will also join the tour as support on select dates. Full itinerary below.

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, April 1 at 10:00 a.m . local time at Dirtyheads.com. Dirty Heads presale will also be available beginning Tuesday, March 29th at 10 a.m. local.

With over One Billion streams to date, Dirty Heads have successfully fused hip-hop, reggae, and rock all with some South Cali attitude.
