Warner Bros. Discovery is commemorating India’s heritage, innovations and modern marvels with a new documentary series, The Journey of India , premiering on October 10 on Discovery+ in India and the Philippines, as well as on the Discovery Channel, TLC, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and DTamil. The series will also be released globally, with dates to be announced soon. 

Produced by WBD in partnership with Black Iris, the six-part series is timed to coincide with the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Indian government’s initiative to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence.

Hosted by Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan (pictured), The Journey of India   employs an extensive collection of historical footage, as well as interviews with respected personalities and experts, to explore the nation’s progress, influences and accomplishments over the past 75 years, from advances in science and technology to the legacy and continued vibrancy of its cinema. 

“As India celebrates 75 years of independence, this commemorative new series reflects Warner Bros. Discovery’s commitment to bringing to life unique stories that inspire,” said Arjun Nohwar, WBD general manager, South Asia, in a release. “We are proud to work with the iconic Amitabh Bachchan to take the audience on a vibrant journey of India, capturing the ethos of the nation, its diverse culture and the spirit of its people.”

Indian film personalities Kajol, Karan Johar , Rana Daggubati and AR Rahman will feature in Warner Bros. Discovery series The Journey Of India. The new six-part series marks India’s 75 years of Independence.

Hosted by megastar Amitabh Bachchan , each episode will feature a leading voice to showcase a key theme in India’s development as a nation.

Actor Kajol , who will transport viewers to Bollywood’s legacy against the backdrop of an actual film set in action, said she is honoured to be associated with a show that presents the rich history of Indian cinema.

“Bollywood is an enigma that magnificently amalgamates India’s zealous spirit of creativity, innovation, and artistic sensibilities. I’m honoured to be the one presenting to the audiences a show that celebrates the rich history of Indian cinema, which has for ages catered to the tastes of a diverse range of viewers,” the actor said in a statement.

Conservationist and Baahubali fame actor Rana Daggubati along with Indian author and wildlife conservationist, Latika Nath, will recognise India’s successful initiatives in sustainability and conservation.

Renowned Indian author Amish Tripathi will pay homage to India’s diversity of religions, and Michelin Star chef Vikas Khanna will explore the palatability of Indian cuisine, paralleling his roots to its impact on global cuisine.

It will also features contributions from director SS Rajamouli , veteran actor Hema Malini, industrialist Anand Mahindra, celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, banker Naina Lal Kidwai, climate change activist Vani Murthy, fashion designer Ritu Kumar and renowned dietician Rujuta Diwekar among others.

The Journey of India, produced by Black Iris for Warner Bros, premieres on October 10, on discovery+ and Discovery’s network of channels in India in 12 languages including English, Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Assamese, Oriya, Marathi, Punjabi and Gujarati.

It will also be available on streaming platform discovery+ in the US, UK, and the Philippines.

The District Election Officer has issued a show cause notice to polling officials, stating that the video was recorded during a mock poll. The Presiding Officer and polling agent have confirmed this, and the matter is being investigated.

As India celebrates Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in its 75th year of Independence, Warner Bros. Discovery is set to commemorate the country’s rich tapestry of heritage, innovation and contemporary marvels that have paved the way for this nation’s cutting-edge advancement with new series –  The Journey of India premiering in India  on  October, 10.  Narrated by Bollywood legend  Amitabh Bachchan,  also the face of  Incredible India , the series weaves a tale of  India’s legacy with contributions from a range of esteemed personalities and leaders.

Spanning a wide range of subjects, this one-of-a-kind series provides an in-depth look at the nation’s progress, influences and accomplishments during the past 75 years; from advancements in science and technology and our ambitious and successful space missions to the world of cinema that not only entertains but also inspires. From fascinating stories of faith found across the length and breadth of the country to a diverse food culture that is adored around the world – India in the last 75 years, has slowly but steadily made its presence felt on the global stage. Featuring an extensive collection of historical footage, it also hears from a stellar line-up of respected personalities and subject matter experts.

As India celebrates Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on its 75th year of Independence, Warner Bros Discovery is set to commemorate the country’s rich tapestry of heritage, innovation and contemporary marvels with new series – The Journey of India – narrated by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan.

Premiering on October 10th on discovery+ in the Philippines and India, the exclusive show also airs in India on the Discovery Channel, TLC, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and DTamil on the same day . It will be available on discovery+ and across the Discovery network globally; premier details will be available soon.

The Journey Of India commemorates the 75th year of Indian Independence through a 5-part series produced and conceptualized by Warner Bros. Discovery. The series, narrated by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, accentuates pivotal themes including food, faith, conservation, Indian cinema, and innovation. The primary objective of the campaign was to promote the show.

The campaign commenced with the creation of a Key Visual, meticulously designed to encapsulate the rich diversity of India. This visual masterpiece incorporated iconic elements ranging from temple structures to cutting-edge technological innovations, alongside symbolic landmarks such as the India Gate. Additionally, prominent personalities associated with each theme, including Chef Vikas Khanna and Kajol, were prominently featured.

Furthermore, the Key Visual was adapted into six different languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Bengali - to resonate with diverse linguistic communities across the nation. These language-specific designs were strategically employed for Out-of-Home promotions in high footfall areas across all urban cities and on social media as well.

Engagement on social media platforms played a pivotal role in amplifying the campaign's reach. Over 160 talents were approached for brand collaborations, resulting in substantial earned media for Discovery Channel India's Instagram page. Concurrently, a strategic brand banter was orchestrated on Twitter, involving over 16+ brands featured in the show. This initiative, reinforced by endorsements from esteemed personalities such as Chef Vikas Khanna, Kajol, Rana Daggubati, and Anand Mahindra, facilitated the campaign's trend-worthy status.

In summary, through a multifaceted approach encompassing visually compelling designs, strategic social media engagement, and endorsements from influential figures, The Journey Of India successfully captivated audiences, celebrating India's rich heritage and journey towards independence.

2024 Journey of Discovery Prize Winner

Congratulations to UB student Patrick Mohr, the University Libraries’ 2024 Journey of Discovery undergraduate research contest winner. This $500 award recognizes students who produce significant academic inquiry requiring the use of the University Libraries’ information resources and collections. A Biomedical Sciences major, Mohr’s winning essay highlights his ongoing endeavors in a research lab and how the University Libraries services and resources have guided him through various steps of the research process.

Mohr’s paper, titled “Exploration of the Secondary Messenger, Selenoprotein P (SEPP1), in a Rodent Model of Exercise; Theorizing Interaction with the Dopamine D2 Receptor (D2R) as a Target for Brain Reward Dysregulation, Addictive Behavior, and Aging,” investigates the relationship between SEPP1 and exercise intensity. As he began his journey of discovery on the topic of his paper, Mohr was flooded by a sea of articles and websites that he had to sift through. Using library databases such as PubMed and the Delivery+ service, he learned to customize his search for peer-reviewed articles and request those not held by UB Libraries.  His next phase of the process was drafting a manuscript and Mohr found quiet spaces in the libraries and the availability of EndNote, a program that assists with formatting citations, ideal for completing this work. The judges for the Journey of Discovery undergraduate research contest were impressed by how Mohr discovered, appreciated and embraced the resources the libraries have to offer, and that considering his undergraduate status, his ability to synthesize library resources was exceptional.

“One of the greatest hurdles the UB Libraries helped me overcome was navigating the overwhelming amount of information surrounding my research topic. However, going through this process and utilizing the resources provided, I gradually developed a systematic approach to filter and scrounge through a vast array of articles. This approach is something I continue to use for my research and has allowed me to explore other facets of my research more efficiently,” said Mohr.

Unknown sailor's notebook found hidden in furniture tells story of USS Amesbury's WWII journey

A Massachusetts woman discovered a historic artifact that dates back to World War II and was hidden inside of a piece of furniture.

Brenda O'Keefe, a Massachusetts resident, found a green notebook that documented events from the USS Amesbury, according to the NOAA Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary .

“I was thrilled to be contacted by the notebook's discoverer, Ms. Brenda O'Keefe,” Matthew Lawrence, a maritime archaeologist at Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary told USA TODAY. “It is not often that someone reaches out to the sanctuary's staff with a discovery such as this, so we greatly value Ms. O'Keefe's efforts to share the information.”

Although the author is unknown, many of this ship's voyages and activities during World War II are documented.

Starting on June 13, 1944, the writer wrote key events of the ship's journey.

By July 2, 1944, the ship left for England. Making trips between the Unites States and England, the author showed that these journeys lasted a few days at a time.

On April 7, 1945, the author created an entry titled, “war ended with Germany.”

Although there were no identifiers to who this person might be, Lawrence said their record-keeping adds another layer to the vessel's story.

“The notebook's information allows us to tell the maritime stories embodied by the National Marine Sanctuaries,” Lawrence said. “Sometimes the stories are local, like when the Amesbury had to leave Key West to avoid a hurricane. Other times the stories are global, like when the Amesbury's (sic) participated in the D-Day landings in France.”

In 1945, the USS Amesbury, a U.S. naval destroyer escort, was converted to a high speed transport vessel, according to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary .

Known to Floridians as Alexander's Wreck, the ship was named after Lt. Stanton Amesbury who was killed in enemy action over Casablanca on Nov. 9, 1942.

In the notebook, the author dated an entry on Feb. 23, 1945, “left for Philly for conversion.”

The marine sanctuary notes this event on its website, stating that the USS Amesbury was one of the 104 destroyer escorts that was converted to a high-speed transport at the Philadelphia Navy Yard .

The USS Amesbury traveled to Korea and China and was equipped with a five-inch turret gun and three twin-mount, 40 mm antiaircraft guns, the sanctuary said.

In 1946, the ship was retired from active missions and was stationed in Florida.

Enormous snake in ancient India was longer than a school bus

'The past is full of giant snakes.'

Another day in science, another massive, ancient snake discovery. Paleontologists in India have unearthed fossilized vertebrae from a snake that slithered around the sub-continent about 47 million years ago and may have grown as long as nearly 50 feet. The newly discovered, extinct species is named Vasuki inidicus , after the mythical serpent coiled around the neck of the Hindu god Shiva, and is described for the first time in a study published April 18 in the journal Scientific Reports . 

“ Vasuki is an important piece of an ancient puzzle. It contributes to our understanding of this extinct group, and also to our understanding of large, apex, top-of-the-foodchain snakes in general,” says John Jacisin III , a paleontologist at the University of Texas at Austin who researches reptiles but was uninvolved in the new study. Beyond reptiles, the fossil find carries broader clues to India’s climate tens of millions of years ago. “It’s also just a cool snake because it was so big,” he says, comparing its length to longer than that of a yellow school bus. 

Sunil Bajpai , co-author of the study and a vertebrate paleontologist at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, first discovered the fossilized snake remains in 2005 at a coal mine in western India. Over the course of a slow and careful excavation, 27 vertebrates–all likely to be from the same individual–were uncovered. By analyzing the size ratios of various parts of the vertebrae and the fossils unique shapes and protrusions, Bajpai and his co-researcher established the remains were that of a new species in the extinct family of Madtsoiidae, which were primitive snakes similar to boas and pythons. 

The fist-sized fossils are second only in girth and width to those of Tintanoboa , another giant snake estimated to have lived about 58 million years ago in what is now present-day Colombia. Based on the age of the rock the newly described vertebrae were found in, the researchers date Vasuki to about 47 million years ago, just a few million years after the Indian tectonic plate began colliding with Eurasia. According to the new study, the timing supports the idea that Madtsoiids originated in India, and later moved to North Africa and southern Eurasia, where other, later fossil specimens have been found. 

It’s a challenge to accurately deduce total species body size from a single individual’s incomplete skeleton. But using model equations incorporating data on current, living snakes and the known fossil record, Bajpai and his colleague, Debajit Datta –another vertebrate paleontologist at the same institution, estimate that V. indicus was somewhere between about 36 and and 49.9 feet (10.9 and 15.2 meters) long. The only known snake of comparable size was Titanoboa , currently the record-holder for the largest snake to have ever lived. Titanoboa clocked in at an estimated 35 to 50 feet long, with the mean estimate around 42 feet in length. The relative vertebrate sizes indicate that Titanoboa was a heavier, thicker-bodied snake than V. indicus, yet it’s impossible to know exactly which snake species would’ve won the measuring contest. 

“Based on the data at hand Vasuki was only slightly smaller in length than Titanoboa ,” Bajpai and Datta write in a joint email to PopSci . “However, we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of Vasuki being slightly larger than Titanoboa , because the fossil vertebrae in our collection may not have come from the largest individual of Vasuki . The same, however, can also be said for Titanoboa . Since neither of these snakes are known from complete skeletons, we cannot say with certainty whether one was longer or wider than the other.”

Exact size estimates are liable to change as more fossils are found and more analysis is done. “Everything shrinks when the tape measure comes out,” says Alexandra Howard , a paleobiologist and herpetologist at Texas A&M University who was not involved in the new research. “It’s a running joke [in paleontology], everyone always finds the biggest thing,” she adds–and with more discovery and scrutiny the biggest size estimates tend to scale down. Nonetheless, Howard says the new discovery includes some very well-preserved fossils and is an interesting addition to our knowledge of ancient reptiles. “The past was full of giant snakes. That’s really cool,” she says.

And, either way, second place in size isn’t so bad, especially when you’re separated from your closest competitor by about 10 million years. Vasuki was probably a slow-slithering ambush predator that constricted its prey like a python, according to Bajpai and Datta. Based on morphology and the location it was found in, the researchers believe the monstrous snake was either terrestrial or semi-aquatic–living in marsh or coastal swamp. It was found in rock that also contains fossils of rays, sharks, bony fish, turtles, crocodiles, and primitive whales, Bajpai and Datta note–though what it ate is unclear. 

Beyond its massive size, the new paleontological discovery is notable for what it can tell us about our planet 47-50 million years ago. “It’s an important discovery because it shows us another example of extreme gigantism in snakes… and because you can use snakes as a thermometer to reconstruct climates of the past,” says Jason Head , a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Cambridge in England who was one of the primary researchers involved in discovering Titanoboa . 

We know from geological and paleontological research that the time period, part of the Eocene Epoch, was warm, but Vasuki offers another data point indicating exactly what the climate may have been like where it was found. Snakes are ectotherms (commonly known as “cold-blooded”), so their body temperature and size is closely linked with the ambient temperature. The larger a snake is, the slower its metabolic rate, and so the warmer the climate must be for it to survive, Head explains. Estimates from modeling equations indicate that Vasuki ’s habitat averaged around 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 degrees Fahrenheit), which is slightly warmer than the average annual temperature in the same region today. 

The ancient climate data can aid in understanding the present and where we’re headed under current climate change, says Head. “Those are the hottest latitudes and the hottest intervals, that’s going to tell us a lot about what those places might be like in the future.”

As paleontologists continue to dig into the past, predictions of the future may become clearer. And also, massive, ancient snakes are liable to keep appearing. “We understand so little about the past diversity of life on Earth,” Head notes. “I think there are probably more giant snakes to come.”

The times are changing across Indian cinema and Katrina Kaif , one of the top stars of the country, is changing with them.

The top 10 Indian films in the post-pandemic year 2023 were all star-driven blockbusters and Kaif was in the mix with Bollywood action extravaganza “ Tiger 3 ,” the latest in Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, where she starred alongside Salman Khan. 2024 has seen a paradigm shift in that, with five of the top 10 films being what are known locally as “content films,” where a strong storyline takes precedence over spectacle.

“I was in love with the book. I was just like, ‘Wow,’ I mean, it was everything you wanted in this space. It was tender, poetic, it had that very mysterious Hitchcockian quality to it. It had drama, it had mystery, it had murder, it had everything in the most unique and novel way,” Kaif told Variety over a zoom call from Mumbai.

With six sisters scattered around the globe and her mother running a school for underprivileged children in southern India, Kaif had a peripatetic childhood. At the age of 18, she became a model in India and was soon rubbing shoulders with the best in the business. Films inevitably followed. Her acting debut, 2003 crime thriller “Boom,” was a critical and commercial disaster despite the presence of Bollywood heavyweights Amitabh Bachchan and Jackie Shroff. It is clear that Kaif has expunged the film from her memory. When asked to recount her cinematic journey Kaif says: “I think my first foray was in a South Indian film, a Telugu film actually [2004 romcom “Malliswari” where she plays the titular role of a wealthy heiress]. And from there, I started getting on-camera experience and then working my way slowly, meeting directors, producers. I felt that I had done what I wanted to do in the modeling industry, I felt ‘okay, I’ve understood the scene.’ I had a few targets and goals and I’d achieved those. And for me, my desire and my heart was in the movies.”

Upon the suggestion of filmmaker Dharmesh Darshan, Kaif, who is now known for her exceptional dancing skills, underwent intense training under the late guru Veeru Krishnan, who was an exponent of the Kathak dance form. “Dance is one thing, but I feel like Kathak is about expression. It’s about a feeling, it’s about expressing yourself through music. And that, for me was my foundation for movies,” Kaif says. “It was about understanding the emotion and the language of cinema. I was almost quiet, a little timid, very naive, I wasn’t sure of my identity in terms of what was my voice, my expression as a girl, as a woman. I was very young. So, I think that really helped me find my voice.”

Kaif also benefited from the sage advise of co-star Anil Kapoor (“Slumdog Millionaire”) on the sets of “Humko Deewana Kar Gaye” (2006) who told her to get into the headspace of the scene they were about to perform, rather than walking back and forth. “Having been surrounded by thespians, I was like a sponge, I was very eager to learn, and very open, I was not a person who ever had any airs or preconceived notions,” Kaif says.

Significant success followed. Kaif counts drama-romance “Namastey London” (2007) and comedies “Welcome” (2007) and “Singh Is King” (2008) among the highlights of her early career. Thriller “New York” (2009) was a turning point, Kaif says. The actor also lists comedy “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” (2009), political drama “Rajneeti” (2010) and coming-of-age film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (2011) as her standout films of that time.

The next chapter in Kaif’s journey featured big-budget high octane action films, including “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012) that kicked off the immensely successful spy universe, “Dhoom 3” (2013) and “Bang Bang” (2014). “I was doing exactly what I wanted to do. These were the filmmakers I wanted to work with,” Kaif says. Kaif’s love affair with dance also continued, with her being actively involved in the choreography. The actor also rates her work in action-adventure “Jagga Jasoos” (2017), drama “Zero” (2018) and cop film “Sooryavanshi” (2021), which was the first major Bollywood theatrical release post-COVID.

Meanwhile, the spy universe continued with “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017) and “Ek Tha Tiger” (2023). A sequence set in a hammam (Turkish bath) is a particular highlight for the actor. “For me dance and action are similar in that sense – I need to be in there, I have to execute it,” Kaif says, adding that she rarely uses stunt doubles. The hammam sequence is a case in point where Kaif executed all the action herself as her double came down with COVID-19.

Kaif’s train of thought is interrupted as her phone rings. It’s her husband, the actor Vicky Kaushal . She’ll call him back later. Kaushal is also a perfect example of a changing Bollywood where the story can take precedence over spectacle. His 2023 filmography includes an extended appearance in top 10 hit, immigration drama “Dunki,” playing the lead in military hero biopic “Sam Bahadur” and headlining small-town romcom “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke.”

In 2023, the Indian film industry grew 14% to reach a value of $2.3 billion, within which theatrical revenues reached an all-time high of $1.4 billion. The number of screens grew 4% and fewer films released directly on digital platforms. Kaif’s current trajectory mirrors that growth.

“I’ve always put the audiences first and have tried to with my choices throughout my career. And now I think it’s about finding a balance, what story do I feel is going to connect with the audience? And what do I connect to personally and as an actor right now? What’s going to give me growth? What’s going to give me satisfaction? This is just exactly what I want to be doing right now,” Kaif says.

The West came calling recently, but circumstances at the time meant that Kaif had to turn the offer down. “I do believe it will happen, and I think that will be a whole new leaf in my book, so to speak, and really exciting,” Kaif says.
