How Early to Arrive for a Domestic Flight in Canada

Traveling by air can be both exciting and stressful. One aspect that can cause anxiety is figuring out how early to arrive for a domestic flight in Canada. The last thing you want is to rush through security or risk missing your flight. In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about check-in times, why the recommended arrival time is usually 1-2 hours before a domestic flight, the impact of peak travel times, how to navigate Canadian airports efficiently, and how to deal with unexpected delays. So, let’s dive in and make your next domestic flight a breeze!

Understanding Domestic Flight Check-In Times

Check-in times for domestic flights in Canada refer to the window of time before departure when passengers must complete the check-in process at the airport. The purpose of check-in times is to allow airlines to manage passenger loads, security screenings, and flight logistics effectively, all while ensuring the safety and punctuality of the flight.

In most cases, passengers can arrive as early as is necessary to meet the check-in window, but most airlines and airports recommend that passengers arrive earlier in case of unexpected delays, which can be especially prevalent during peak travel season.

Factors that influence check-in times

Several factors influence domestic flight check-in times in Canada. Generally, passengers are encouraged to arrive at least 1-2 hours before their scheduled departure for domestic flights. However, during peak travel seasons or at busy airports, arriving even earlier is advisable to account for potential queues at check-in counters and security checkpoints.

The need for security checks plays a significant role in determining check-in times. Passengers must go through security screening, which includes X-ray scans of carry-on items and passenger body scans. These procedures can be time-consuming, especially during busy travel periods, so allowing ample time is essential.

The check-in procedure in Canada

The check-in procedure in Canada typically involves several steps. Passengers can check-in through various methods, including online check-in, self-service kiosks at the airport, or by visiting the airline’s check-in counter. Online check-in is highly recommended as it allows passengers to select seats, print boarding passes, and save time at the airport.

Once checked in, passengers proceed to security, where they must present their government-issued photo ID and boarding pass. After clearing security, they proceed to the departure gate, ensuring they arrive well before the boarding time indicated on their boarding pass. Airlines have strict boarding cutoff times, and passengers who arrive late may be denied boarding.

Recommended Arrival Times for Different Airlines and Airports

When it comes to air travel, it’s always important to know what the guidelines are for the specific airline you are flying with or the airport you are going to pass through. Let’s take a closer look at the recommended arrival times for Canada’s airlines and airports.

Airline Arrival Guidelines

Guidelines on how early you should arrive before domestic flights in Canada can vary among the best airlines in Canada . Each carrier sets its own recommendations, considering factors like check-in, security checks, and boarding procedures. To make your life easier, we have placed the guidelines in the table below.

Airport Arrival Guidelines

Just like with airlines, airport arrival time guidelines for domestic flights in Canada may also differ from one airport to another. Factors such as airport size, passenger volume, and security procedures can influence these variations. Passengers are advised to check with the specific airport they are departing from to find out their recommendations, but we have also prepared the table below for your convenience.

Impact of Peak Travel Times on Arrival

Peak travel times in Canada can significantly impact the recommended arrival times for domestic flights. Understanding these busy travel seasons and how holidays affect arrival times can help you plan your journey more efficiently.

Summer is a popular time for Canadians to explore their own country. With its vast landscapes, stunning national parks, and vibrant cities, Canada attracts both domestic and international tourists during this season. From hiking in the Rocky Mountains to exploring the picturesque coastlines of Nova Scotia, there is no shortage of activities for travelers. As a result, airports across the country experience a surge in passenger numbers, leading to longer wait times at check-in counters , security checkpoints, and boarding gates.

Similarly, the winter holiday season brings its own set of challenges for air travelers. Canadians often take advantage of the school break and holidays like Christmas and New Year to visit family and friends or escape to warmer destinations. The airports become bustling hubs of activity as people rush to catch their flights, carrying gifts and holiday cheer. Oftentimes, severe weather conditions like heavy snowfall during the winter holiday season can also cause significant delays at the airport , requiring travellers to be extra vigilant about arriving well ahead of your departure.

Navigating Canadian Airports Efficiently

Now that you have a good understanding of arrival times for domestic flights, let’s explore some tips to help you navigate Canadian airports more efficiently .

Tips for Quick Security Checks

Preparing to go through airport security faster can save you time and hassle at the airport. Remember to pack your liquids in a clear, resealable bag of no more than 1L in size, wear easily removable footwear, and be prepared to remove any electronics or metal items from your bags. These small steps can help expedite the security screening process, allowing you to get to your gate faster.

Furthermore, consider joining a trusted traveler program, such as the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority’s (CATSA) Verified Traveller program . This program allows eligible passengers to enjoy expedited security screening at select Canadian airports, saving you valuable time and reducing stress.

Making the Most of Airport Amenities

Canadian airports offer a wide range of amenities for travelers to enjoy while waiting for their flights. From duty-free shopping to restaurants, lounges, and more, take advantage of what the airport has to offer. It can make your time at the airport more enjoyable and help pass the time if you arrive early.

Before your trip, take a moment to research the amenities available at the airports you’ll be passing through. Some airports have unique features, such as art installations or interactive exhibits , that can provide an enriching and memorable experience.

If you’re a food lover, exploring the culinary offerings at the airport can be a delightful adventure. Many Canadian airports boast a variety of dining options, ranging from local favorites to international cuisines. Treat yourself to a delicious meal or grab a quick snack to satisfy your cravings.

For those seeking relaxation, consider visiting one of the airport lounges . These tranquil spaces provide a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the airport, allowing you to unwind and recharge before your flight.

Dealing with Unexpected Delays

While we hope for smooth and prompt departures, unexpected delays can still occur. Here’s how you can handle arriving late at the airport, deal with flight cancellations and delays, and know what to do if your flight is overbooked.

What to Do If You Arrive Late at the Airport

If you find yourself running late at a Canadian airport, staying calm and taking swift actions is crucial. Skipping lines isn’t typically allowed, as security and immigration procedures are mandatory. Instead, inform airport staff of your situation; they may assist you in expediting the process, but it’s not guaranteed.

Depending on your ticket type and airline policies, you may be able to rebook for a fee or under certain circumstances, get on a standby list . However, it’s advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance to avoid such situations and ensure a stress-free journey.

How to Handle Flight Cancellations and Delays

When facing flight delays in Canada, stay informed by checking your airline’s updates regularly. Be prepared with essentials like snacks, water, and entertainment. Know your rights as a passenger and ask about compensation options . Stay patient, as weather conditions can be unpredictable, and maintain a positive attitude while waiting for your flight to depart.

In the unfortunate event that a flight delay turns into a flight cancellation, it’s crucial to stay calm and contact the airline’s customer service immediately. They will guide you on the next steps, which may include rebooking your flight or arranging alternative travel arrangements . Keep in mind that cancellations due to inclement weather or other extraordinary circumstances are often beyond the airline’s control, so it’s crucial to remain polite with the airline staff at all times.

Coping with Overbooked Flights

If you find yourself on an overbooked flight, the airline will typically ask for volunteers to give up their seats in exchange for compensation , typically ranging between $125 to $1,000. In such cases, it’s essential to know your rights as a passenger and understand the compensation offered. If you choose to volunteer, the airline will work with you to find an alternative flight at no cost and provide the necessary arrangements.

With these tips and guidelines in mind, you can now approach your next domestic flight in Canada with confidence. Remember to arrive early, prepare for security checks, and make the most of your time at the airport. It is also recommended to book your flight with one of the best credit cards for travel insurance in Canada , so that even if you face unexpected delays, you do not need to worry about financial setbacks. Happy travels!

Air Travel Guide: When to Arrive, Check-In, and More

Air travel is all about timing. Knowing when to arrive at the airport, when check-in kiosks open, and when your departure gate closes helps ensure you have plenty of time to check in your luggage, move through security, and find your boarding gate. Here we’ll explain how to schedule your time on your next airport trip.

How Early to Get to the Airport

How early you need to get to the airport depends on whether you’re catching a domestic or international flight.

Domestic Flights:

For domestic flights, you should be at the airport for a minimum of 45 minutes before your flight, although it’s much safer to be there 90 minutes to two hours before departure. Many airlines have a strict cut-off time for checking baggage that ends 45 minutes before departure to make sure all checked luggage gets on the plane. Show up even a few minutes after the 45-minute cutoff, and you may not be able to check your bag.

One of the advantages of traveling with a carry-on is avoiding the need to check luggage, but you’ll still need time to navigate TSA security and arrive at your gate with at least fifteen minutes to spare, as most airlines close the boarding door ten to fifteen minutes before departure.

International Flights:

For international travel , plan to be at the airport three or four hours before departure. In addition to checking bags, going through security, and getting to your departure gate, you also need to factor in delays caused by passport checks, visa applications, and customs inspections. Some airlines require you to check in at least an hour before an international flight, so contact your airline to see if this time limit applies to your flight.

How Early Can You Check in for a Flight?

Checking in early helps ensure you make your flight with time to spare, which begs the question of how early can you check in for a flight? If you check in online or use your airline’s app, you can electronically check in 24 hours before your scheduled departure, so you just have to check your luggage at the airport, get through security, and reach your departure gate when you get to the airport.

If you’re checking in at the airline kiosk, contact your airline and ask when they open for check-ins. Generally, US airlines open check-ins three hours before departure.

How Early Can You Check Bags?

Generally speaking, you can check your bags two to six hours before your flight in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Ask your airline for their specific times. It’s sometimes possible to check your bags 12 hours before a same-day flight in major airports, but this is at the discretion of the check-in staff and is by not guaranteed. Here’s how early you can check your bags on some of the most popular US domestic airlines:

  • How early can I check my bags on Southwest? Four hours before departure.
  • How early can I check my bags on Delta? Six hours before departure.
  • How early can I check my bags in America? Four hours before departure.
  • How early can I check my bags on United? Four hours before departure.

International Checked Bags

If you’re flying within or out of Asia, Europe, or the Middle East, expect to be able to check your bags two to four hours before departure, depending on your airline. Premium airlines may allow you to drop off luggage as early as 24 hours before your flight, either for free or as a paid service. Again, check with your airline.

When Does Boarding Start?

Boarding for domestic and international flights usually begins thirty minutes to one hour before scheduled departure, beginning with first-class and business passengers. Be sure to check the scheduled departure for your flight on the airport screens. If a plane is running late, the flight may leave before the time scheduled on your ticket.

When Does Boarding End?

Typically, departure gates close fifteen minutes before departure. Passengers are not allowed on board once the doors close, and seats may be assigned to standby travelers if you miss this deadline.

Knowing how early to get to the airport, when to check in, and when boarding starts helps you navigate airports with plenty of time. Combine this with our advice on how to prevent flight delays , and you’ll have a much more enjoyable trip.

Travelling to or within Canada? The rules have changed. Here's what you need to know

Vaccinated travellers exempt from quarantine still need to adhere to a number of rules.

domestic travel canada airport arrival time

Social Sharing

Passport? Check. Plane ticket? Check. What about your vaccination documents and COVID-19 test results? Thanks to the pandemic, entering Canada now requires a lengthy checklist.

"You definitely have to be prepared and it's not going to be the usual experience," said Senka Dukovich of Toronto, who flew home from Croatia earlier this month.

Even domestic travellers may face challenges when entering certain provinces.

Here's what you need to know about travelling to or within Canada, with the help of some Canadians who've already hit the road.

Travelling to Canada

Anyone currently allowed to enter Canada can skip the 14-day quarantine if they meet the country's requirements for being fully vaccinated. That means two doses of either the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson product, at least 14 days before arriving.

Most foreigners are still barred from entering Canada but,  as of Aug. 9 , fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents living in that country will be able to visit, and they won't have to quarantine.

The federal government said it plans to allow fully vaccinated travellers from all other countries to enter Canada and skip quarantine on Sept. 7.

However, all fully vaccinated travellers allowed to enter still face other requirements.

Dukovich, her husband Ted Read, and their five-year-old granddaughter Ksenija Callaghan, travelled to Croatia in June to visit family.

They had a two-day stopover in Paris before their final flight back to Canada on July 7, which meant the trio had to take COVID-19 tests during their stopover.

domestic travel canada airport arrival time

Travellers to Canada — even those who are fully vaccinated —  must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Air passengers need to take the test within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of their final direct flight to Canada.

Dukovich was pleased to discover that — at the time — France provided free COVID-19 tests.

"We got three COVID tests [for free] that would have cost at least $400," she said. "No hassles, no waits, no appointment."

However, Canadians departing France now won't be so lucky; on July 7, the country stopped providing free tests to tourists outside the EU.

  • Fully vaccinated tourists will soon be able to visit Canada again

Travellers to Canada must submit their travel information to the federal government using the ArriveCAN app or by registering online within 72 hours before their arrival.

"You had to upload documentation for both your first and second dose," said Dukovich who submitted the family's application from a hotel room in Paris. "We just had our phone, so you can imagine, trying to do this on the little phone."

When travellers finish inputting their information, they're emailed a receipt to show a Canadian border officer upon arrival, along with their COVID-19 test results and any vaccination documents.

On July 9, Shawn Plancke, a Canadian who lives in Barcelona, flew to Halifax with his wife, Samantha McGuinness, and three children. He advises travellers to pack hard copies of their documents before departing for Canada.

"I know this is going against society these days, but print it out," he said. "I would not have wanted to be flipping through my phone [for documents]."

Currently, both land and air travellers will be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival in Canada, or be given a home test kit. The federal government provides the tests for free and travellers can pre-register online to save time.

However, starting Aug. 9., fully vaccinated travellers will not need a post-arrival test unless they have been randomly selected to take one.

Travellers to Canada are required to use <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ArriveCAN?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#ArriveCAN</a> to submit their <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Covid19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Covid19</a> information electronically. This includes travel history and proof of vaccination. You must enter your info within 72 hours before you arrive.<a href="https://t.co/duPKWrfMud">https://t.co/duPKWrfMud</a> <a href="https://t.co/w5RFdPdJdh">pic.twitter.com/w5RFdPdJdh</a> &mdash; @GovCanHealth

Dukovich and her family landed in Montreal. She said they received home test kits instead of an on-site test, because they had a connecting flight to Toronto.

"On the way out, they just handed us kits like they were giving you a lunch box," said Dukovich.

At home, she had to go online and be guided by a nurse via video conference who provided instructions including "counting down the seconds you have to have the swab in your nose," said Dukovich.

That same day, Purolator picked up the tests.

Travelling with children

Fully vaccinated travellers don't have to quarantine while waiting for their test results. But Dukovich thought that she and her husband were required to, because their five-year-old granddaughter — who's staying with them — isn't vaccinated.

Children under 12 are currently not allowed to get vaccinated in Canada.

It was only on day three of their quarantine that Dukovich learned from a quarantine officer that only her granddaughter had to quarantine.

"That was a relief," said Dukovich. "My husband and I are free to go out."

Unvaccinated travellers — or those who got a vaccine currently not recognized by the Canadian government — must quarantine for 14 days. Those entering by air must also spend up to three of those days in a quarantine hotel  — a rule that will end on Aug. 9.

However, unvaccinated children under 18 can head home with their vaccinated parents. Currently, they must quarantine — even though their parents can leave the house. But that rule will also change on Aug. 9, when the government will start allowing unvaccinated children under 12 to skip quarantine — as long as they avoid group settings such as school, camps and daycares for 14 days.

Travelling within Canada

The rules can also be complex for domestic travellers.

Air passengers travelling within Canada  don't have to take a pre-arrival COVID-19 test.

However, Nova Scotia ,  New Brunswick ,  Prince Edward Island ,  Newfoundland and Labrador ,  Manitoba  and the territories still require some inter-provincial travellers to quarantine.

The rules can vary depending on your vaccination status and/or where you're travelling from. For example, most of the Atlantic provinces now allow travellers from within Atlantic Canada to enter, regardless of their vaccination status.

The rest of Canada can skip quarantine in the Atlantic provinces if fully vaccinated or, in the case of New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador, have at least one dose.

Fully vaccinated travellers can also skip quarantine in Manitoba and the territories.

  • Border restrictions for fully vaccinated Canadians loosen, but plan for wider reopening remains unclear
  • Travel restrictions end in Atlantic Canada, bringing Christmas in July for separated families

Manitoba, Yukon and the Atlantic provinces also exempt from quarantine unvaccinated children under 12 — if all their vaccinated guardians meet the exemption requirement. In Nova Scotia, the rule applies to unvaccinated children ages 18 and younger.

However, because traveller Plancke and his family flew from Barcelona to Halifax, his three children must follow the current federal rules and quarantine for 14 days — despite that fact that both parents are fully vaccinated.

"It's quite confusing when you have strict stricter rules, federally, and then you have other rules provincially," said Plancke.

The provinces and territories listed here may have further requirements for tourists, so travellers to those regions should check the rules online before packing their bags.

For example, the Atlantic provinces require certain visitors to pre-register, and travellers to  Nunavut  must first get authorization. Also,  the Northwest Territories  still bars most leisure travellers.

The airport is so enjoyable for travellers who need to pass the time waiting for flights. There are shops, restaurants and lounges to relax in as well as all the facilities you might need. The new international terminal is sparkling and modern, so your travel experience is pleasant every leg of the way.

How Early to Arrive at Calgary Airport

Like every other airport, it is recommended and advised to reach two hours before your domestic departure and three hours before if you have an international departure. It is advised to get 2-3 hours prior to your flight as the Check-in and security procedure at the airport may take longer than usual. Also, if you are traveling during the peak or holiday season, plan accordingly and keep extra time in hand to be safe.

YYC offers a YYC Express, a reservation program for access to security screening via a dedicated queue for guests flying out of YYC. All you need to do is reserve your time and show up at the designated checkpoints, and you can enjoy an expedited security experience.

The Domestic Terminal

You can find three concourses at the domestic terminal: A, B, and C.

The International Terminal

You can find two concourses at the international terminal: E for flights to America and D for all other international flights.

Arriving At The Airport

There is plenty of short and long-term parking at Parkade 1 (P1) and Parkade 2 (P2). Short term is considered less than 30 days and can be found on the ground level of each area. Hourly, daily and weekly parking can be found on levels P2, P4, P5, P6 and P7. On those levels, you can park for up to two months.

For travellers going to the domestic terminal, the nearest parking is at P1 and for international, it is P2.

People taking taxi

Take note that you need to drive through P1 to reach P2 and from there, you can take the Plus 30 Skywalk or the pedestrian tunnel. Getting to the airport early is always wise, so allow extra time during busy periods such as long weekends and holidays.

Be aware you can’t pay for parking with cash. Only credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, and American Express), debit cards, and Discover cards are accepted. There are express pay stations in the lobbies and walkways of P1 and P2.

Insert your parking ticket into the machine and follow the instructions to have your ticket validated with a receipt. You will need this to exit the car park through an express pay exit lane. You can also pay from your car when you leave the car park by inserting your ticket into the machine and paying to have the gate arm opened.

Going Between The Domestic And International Terminals

To go from the domestic to the international terminal (or vice versa) quickly, you can use the YYC LINK. There are four stations and part of the 12-minute trip includes a view of the Rockies. If you prefer to walk and get the circulation going, follow the Connections Corridor that has moving walkways and a pedestrian walkway and bathrooms along the way.

International Terminals

There are lots of maps, signage and information desks around the airport if you happen to get disorientated and lose your way. If you are unsure of where you are going, there is always a friendly face around to help you out.

Duty-free shopping is often a highlight of being at the airport. There’s always an excuse to buy at least a few things for yourself or as a gift for someone you will see during or after your vacation. Roam around the shops and buy some books to read on the flight, snacks and luxury items like skincare and perfume.

There are over 135 shops, so if you are a shopaholic, allow time to get your retail therapy fixed at Calgary International Airport.

Finding Food And Drink

If you are hungry or don’t like airplane food, there are lots of good restaurants, cafes and bars to grab a bite and drink. Fast-food favourites like Subway, Starbucks and Tim Horton’s are there to tempt travellers with delicious treats.

There are healthier options too and everything from budget and casual to expensive and fancy is there. If you are heading to Europe, you might like to get in the mood with a beer from the Belgian Beer Café.

Filling In Time

Recreational and medical cannabis can be taken on domestic flights in carry-on or checked luggage. Travellers may be asked to show proper documentation and allowable amounts to avoid confiscation.

Airport Improvement Fees

An airport improvement fee of $35 per traveller on all flights departing Calgary International Airport is included in your ticket price. Exempt from the fee are passengers meeting the following conditions:

  • Travellers continue a trip less than four hours after arrival at YYC for domestic Canada and trans-border itineraries.
  • Travellers continue a trip less than 24 hours after arrival at YYC for international itineraries. A traveller will be considered to be continuing a trip even though multiple air carriers may be involved in the itinerary on air carrier tickets.
  • airline staff travelling on business
  • infants under two years of age who didn't need a ticket to fly

The airport improvement fees go towards a range of improvements and expansions of the airport, including the associated debts, necessary to stay current with the air transportation infrastructure requirements of the city of Calgary and the province of Alberta.

Getting To And From The Airport

Going to the airport from Calgary, drive east along Memorial Drive and then north on the QE2 Highway (Highway 2) and follow the airport signs. If you want to catch a bus, you can catch the Calgary Transit service from many points in the city to both terminals.

If catching a bus from the domestic terminal, look for exit door two on the arrivals level, then walk across the road to pillar 7. From the international terminal, take exit door 15 on the arrivals level, then walk across the road to pillar 32.

There are ticket vending machines at the bus stops that take cash, debit or credit cards. You can also buy tickets at 7-11 in arrivals and the Sandstone Pharmacy on the departures level of the domestic terminal.

Taxi in Airport

Taxis are also convenient. There are taxis on the arrivals level of each terminal and you can catch one most times of the day or not have to wait long.

Taxis use meters and you can expect to pay about $45 to reach the downtown area. If you are staying in an airport hotel, check if they have a complimentary shuttle which is situated on the arrivals level at bus bays 16, 17, and 37.

Is arriving at the airport 2 hours before a flight too early? You might need 3, in some cases

Want to start an argument? Tell your travel companion you won't be arriving two hours before your flight.

Go on, try it. I'll be right here.

No, this isn't a frivolous, first-world problem. Vacations have been ruined because of it. Marriages have ended. And with a record-breaking summer for air travel ahead , it's time to settle this question once and for all.

As with so many things in travel, there's a simple answer – and a complicated one.

The simple answer is: Two hours for domestic flights, three hours for international flights. (More or less.)

"The two-hour recommendation is fairly standard across the industry," says Heather Lissner, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport spokesperson. "We recommend the two hours so that travelers have enough time to get dropped off or park their cars, check their bags and get through security to their gates."

The complicated answer: It depends.

Did you get to the airport too late or too early? Tell us about your experience .

BASIC ECONOMY: Here's a refresher on those basic economy plane tickets

Lissner explains that while experienced travelers may find they need less time, the two hours give those who don’t travel as frequently a chance to have a less rushed and stressful travel experience. And during busy holiday periods or special events, the airport may recommend adding even more time.

A few years ago, the folks at Sky Harbor adopted a "3-2-1" recommendation: Arrive at the airport ticket counter to check-in three hours before your flight; be in line at the airport security checkpoint two hours before your flight ; be at the gate one hour before your flight.

How "standard" is this advice? The Transportation Security Administration agrees with it, and some airlines too. For instance, American Airlines advises passengers to be at the airport three hours before flight time for international departures and two hours for domestic flights . There's an exception for flights to certain overseas destinations, which require that you check in earlier.

United Airlines' minimum check-in times range from 30 minutes to 90 minutes , depending on the type of flight. If you have luggage to check, you may have to check in earlier, and there is a list of airports that are exceptions to the rule.

Confused yet?

It may help to note the likely motives behind the advice. The TSA and airports want you to get there earlier, each for its own reasons. The agency does not like to be rushed with screenings, even if there's a long security line. Airports want you to take advantage of their incredible shopping and dining facilities, which you can't do if you're rushing to the gate. Also, they factor in the time it takes to find parking. Airlines, on the other hand, don't want you milling around the boarding area for too long.

SEE JD POWER'S 2022 RANKINGS: Which is the best airline in the US? Depends on the class

But these guidelines don't take into account the fact that you're dealing with people – some with mobility problems, others who are nervous and would arrive a day before their flight if they could. That's where things get interesting, and that's where the "depends" really becomes apparent.

Joe Reimers, a sales engineer from South Bend, Indiana, describes himself as a "conservative" traveler, especially when he's checking a bag. But if he flies out of his home airport, which he knows well, he sometimes arrives just 45 minutes before his departure.

"Flying out of less familiar airports on return trips is a different story," he says. He sticks to the airline advice of two hours for international flights and 90 minutes for domestic flights. "At very large airports, I may go even longer," he adds.

Yet other experienced travelers say their lead time is always the same. Douglas Jensen, an information technology consultant from Natick, Massachusetts, is a top-level elite frequent flier with 45 years of air travel experience.

"I always allow two hours for domestic flights and three hours for international flights," he says. That means leaving his home at 1 a.m. for a 5 a.m. flight gives him the security of knowing that he won't miss his flight.

And that really is the object of this whole exercise: not to miss the flight. So the real question is whether to go with the airport and TSA-recommended more generous arrival times or the airline times that cut it a little closer.

In this case, the airports and the TSA are absolutely correct. Never mind the overpriced airport food, the tacky duty-free shops your local airport wants you to frequent, or the pat-down the TSA agents hope you'll endure. And forget the seasonal lull, which will probably be over by the time you're finished with this article.

If you miss your flight, you have a whole new set of problems. You don't want to go there.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: What airlines owe you when flights are canceled, delayed

What to do at the airport for free while you wait

  • See the art.  Phoenix Sky Harbor, for example, has an impressive collection of art . Terminal 3 has art dedicated to Arizona's flora and fauna through this fall.
  • Watch the planes.  One of the best places to plane-spot is Honolulu International Airport (HNL). Terminals there are connected by long, open-air walkways, where you can see the aircraft up close, smell the aircraft fuel and hear the deafening roar of aircraft engines revving up. Other observation opportunities can be found on the Spotters Wiki:  spotterswiki.com .
  • Take a hike.  Sitting in a pressurized aluminum tube for hours at a time is no one's idea of fun. But you can stretch your legs before you take off by walking through the airport terminal. The longest walkable concourse? That would be Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport . It's 2.16 miles from check-in to your gate at DFW.

This is how long Air Canada says travellers now need between connecting flights

As flight delays and lost luggage bring chaos to summer travel plans, Air Canada is advising travellers on how much time they should leave between connecting flights.

After Air Canada slashed their summer schedule by more than 15 per cent last week, they also bumped up their minimum advised duration between connecting flights.

“We have rejigged flights to give customers more time to catch their flights. As well, we have introduced policies so customers can change flights or standby early at no charge if that will give them more connecting time,” Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick told CTV News Toronto.

For those travelling internationally, and making a connection through Toronto, the airline has increased the amount of time they suggest leaving between connecting flights in most scenarios by 30 minutes.

Here’s the minimum duration Air Canada recommends on new bookings for travellers connecting through Toronto Pearson International Airport.

  • For passengers connecting in Toronto for travel within Canada, Air Canada now recommends at least 40 minutes to catch your second flight.
  • Air Canada suggests at least 1 hour and 10 minutes for passengers coming from another Canadian city to Toronto before heading to the U.S.
  • In the reverse scenario, when travelling from the U.S. to Canada with a connection in Toronto, a minimum of 1 hour and 40 minutes is advised.
  • For passengers coming from another Canadian airport with a connection in Toronto before heading to any other overseas destination, the airline suggests a 60-minute connection.
  • Sixty-minutes is also advised for travellers flying through Toronto from the U.S. to an international destination.
  • The minimum connection time for an international traveller arriving in Toronto before heading to another Canadian destination is slightly more technical. Air Canada generally suggests 1 hour and 15 minutes, but there is a two-hour recommendation until Sept. 6, 2022 for anyone arriving in Toronto and flying onward to Montreal from the following cities: Bogotá, Doha, Dubai, Grand Cayman, Mexico City, Puerto Plata , Punta Cana, San José, Santa Clara, Santiago, Seoul , Shanghai and Port of Spain.
  • International travellers heading to the U.S. through Toronto are suggested to leave 1 hour and 25 minutes between flights.
  • For a traveller coming from abroad and heading to an international destination, 60 minutes is suggested for a connection through Pearson.

What happens if I miss my flight?

When a flight is either delayed by more than three hours or cancelled, Air Canada will rebook a passenger on the next available flight on a “reasonable route” from the same airport. The rebooked flight will be within 48 hours of when the event that caused the delay or cancellation ended, the rules state.

In scenarios when multiple flights on an itinerary are delayed, causing a domino effect that leads to missed flights, eligibility for compensation is based on the disruption with the most significant contributing factor.

Ultimately, the airline will determine if the delay was within Air Canada’s control. For example, if extra time is needed for a catering or crew related error, that would be within Air Canada’s control. But, if there was a maintenance issue or weather related disruption, the passenger will not be eligible for compensation.

Compensation for delays and cancellations is calculated based on your arrival time at the final destination. For delays between 3 and 6 hours, a passenger will be eligible for $400. When delays rise to between 6 and 9 hours, that amount of money increases to $700. Delays that stretch 9 hours or more amount to $1,000.

There are a variety of check-in options at the airport, including online check-in and self-serve check-in.  The options available to you will vary depending on which airline you are flying with. Please contact your airline directly for their check-in options.

Check-in for Domestic and International flights can be found on the main level of the terminal building. Check-in for flights to the U.S. can be found on the second level of the terminal building, above the Arrivals area.

It is important to give yourself plenty of time before your flight to go through the check-in process. Each airline can suggest how early you should arrive at the airport before your flight. For information on when to arrive for your flight, please contact your airline directly before coming to the airport.

At a minimum, we suggest arriving at the airport 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight. Arriving at the airport early will help ensure you have enough time to park, get checked-in, go through security and get to your gate in time for your flight.

Passengers will be asked to show photo identification. Travellers flying to international destinations, including the United States, must have a valid passport.

NOTE: If you are travelling to the U.S. , the hours of operation for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance is 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. If your flight is delayed past 5:00 p.m. you must ensure you are processed through U.S. preclearance in a sufficient time (by 4:30 p.m. is recommended).

The Dept. Of Transportation Lays Out Exactly When an Airline Owes You a Refund

The rule comes amid the DOT's continued effort to advocate for passengers.

domestic travel canada airport arrival time

Elijah Nouvelage/Getty Images

The Department of Transportation (DOT) issued new rules Wednesday requiring airlines to disclose all fees upfront as well as “promptly” provide refunds when they are owed. Under the new rule, travelers are entitled to a refund if an airline cancels or significantly changes their flight, like changing the departure or arrival time by more than 3 hours for domestic flights and 6 hours for international flights, the DOT shared with Travel + Leisure . Travelers can also demand a refund if an airline significantly delays their checked bags (more than 12 hours for domestic flights and 15 to 30 hours for international flights), or if the airline doesn’t provide the ancillary services a passenger purchased like Wi-Fi, seat selection, and in-flight entertainment. Airlines will now be required to issue a refund automatically without a passenger having to request one. The refund must be in the form of cash or the original form of payment, and airlines cannot substitute travel vouchers or other forms of compensation unless the passenger willingly accepts it.

The new rules are part of the DOT’s ongoing effort to expand airline passenger rights and address so-called “junk fees.” They also spell out when travelers are owed a refund, taking it out of the airlines’ hands and making the policy the same for every carrier,

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement shared with T+L. “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”

When it comes to surprise fees, the DOT will require airlines to tell travelers up front what they charge for a first or second checked bag , a carry-on bag, or for canceling or changing a reservation . The fees cannot be displayed through a hyperlink.

Buttigieg said the new rule “will save passengers over half a billion dollars a year in unnecessary or unexpected fees by holding airlines accountable for being transparent with their customers.”

The new rule does not address family seating fees, but the DOT said it plans to propose a separate rule tackling that. Last year, the DOT launched an online family seating dashboard laying out the policies of 10 major U.S. airlines.
