Tom Cruise wearing a black helmet and brown protective suit moments before practicing a stunt for "MI8"

It’s risky business being one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars.

Just ask Tom Cruise, who was spotted climbing onto the wing of a tiny airplane on Saturday while practicing a stunt for a film in these photos obtained by Page Six.

In the pics you can see Cruise, 59, hanging upside down as the plane itself flips over to perform a “loop-the-loop” mid-air so that it appears the actor is actually sitting upright. It’s easy to spot Cruise in the pics due to the plane being yellow and his protective bodysuit and headgear being brown.

A safety harness was worn by the the Scientologist to keep him from falling off of the plane as it whirled around the open skies with him moving along the wing.

The plane being used for the stunt is a 1941 Boeing B75N1 Stearman biplane in which the pilot sits in the back. It took off from Duxford airfield to practice the wild stunt at 2,000 feet over the Cambridgeshire countryside.

The stunt is likely for the eighth installment of Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” franchise, which has reportedly been filming throughout the United Kingdom for several months, according to the BBC .

Photos show that Cruise was sitting in the plane’s front seats before it took off. Once the plane was in the sky he appeared to crawl out of his seat and onto the wing to practice the terrifying stunt.

A second small plane can be seen following close behind Cruise’s stunt plane, likely to practice filming the stunt itself for the film.

Death defying stunts are nothing new for the actor who was also spotted filming another on a train earlier this year, as Page Six exclusively reported, for another “Mission: Impossible” film.

The coronavirus did stall filming of " Mission: Impossible 7 ," which pushed the expected release date of "Mission: Impossible 8" to July of 2023.

Yes, That Really Was Tom Cruise Hanging From an Airplane

Paramount UK tweeted this is indeed one of the biggest movies stars in the world hanging off a plane

We weren’t positive yesterday, but Paramount UK has confirmed that the crazy guy hanging off an airplane was indeed Tom Cruise. Performing one of his signature stunts for the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Cruise was suspended 5,000 feet in the air from an Airbus A400M — while wearing a tailored suit and wingtips, naturally. Newly released photos from September show the actor hanging from a dual safety harness on the door of the military plane, which was flown over the British countryside with the movie star attached.

Cruise’s Ethan Hunt dangles from the tallest building in the world for Ghost Protocol

This was a risky stunt even for Cruise, who free-climbed the cliffs of Dead Horse Point, Utah for Mission: Impossible 2 and dangled from the world’s tallest building , the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, while shooting Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol. Basically, Cruise has used his role as super-spy Ethan Hunt as an excuse to indulge his inner daredevil. “I’m always thinking of different stunts,” Cruise said in 2010 . “I look at buildings and think, how could I climb it? How could I jump out?… When I was a little kid, I used to go up on a roof and jump off the roof into the snow and do flips and stuff, and now I get to do it in movies.” Jumping into the snow, hanging from an airborne plane — it’s all the same when you’re Tom Cruise. We’ll get to see his outdoor airplane ride next December when Mission: Impossible 5 hits theaters.

Tom Cruise Sits on Wing of Biplane Filming Next 'Mission: Impossible' Movie

Tom Cruise reportedly performed the mid-air stunt to introduce a trailer for Mission: Impossible 7 at CinemaCon in April

Tom Cruise is pushing the boundaries again.

On Sunday, footage surfaced of Cruise, 60, reportedly filming a stunt for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One on top of a World War II-era biplane as it flew over South Africa's Blyde River Canyon.

"Hi everyone! Wish I could be there with you - I'm sorry for all the extra noise," Cruise says in the video, reportedly shown at CinemaCon in April . "As you can see, we are filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible , and right now we are over gorgeous Blyde Canyon in stunning South Africa."

In the video, Cruise asserts that "we're making this film for the big screen for audiences to see in your wonderful theaters," until director Christopher McQuarrie flies into view on a second biplane and warns the actor they have to return to filming due to lowering light levels and low fuel.

"Oh yeah, we gotta roll, huh? Low on fuel, that's not good. I'm sorry, we've got to go," Cruise announces before McQuarrie yells "action!" and the two planes speed away, with Cruise still crouching on top of his red biplane.

Cruise is well known for performing his own dramatic stunts. In August, he was spotted filming a helicopter action sequence at a "very remote" and "quite hilly" region of Lake District National Park in northwest England by dog-walking husband-and-wife pair Jason and Sarah Haygarth.

"Toward the end of the walk, last peak, we start seeing helicopters coming up a ravine and dropping people off the top… We were like, this didn't seem right," Jason told Extra .

"We found out the people, they were the cameramen," he continued. "When we came to the peak, we got stopped by what must have been a production team member, saying, 'You can't go. We're going to land the helicopter off the top…' So we took a selfie."

It turned out Cruise was in the middle of filming one of his daring stunt sequences for the upcoming film.

After Sarah and Jason got the all-clear to continue their hike, the couple stumbled on Cruise "strapping himself into a paraglider."

"I could tell it was him straight away," Sarah told Extra . "By the time we got there, people were talking about Mission: Impossible was being filmed… but I was expecting a stunt double."

"He apologized first for the noise. 'Sorry, guys, I know we spoiled your walk with the noise,'" Jason said Cruise told them. Added Sarah, "And then he said, 'I like your dog.'"

"We asked, 'What are you doing?' Then he said, 'I'm going to jump off.' I was like, 'You're going to do what ?'" Jason recounted. "Just before he jumped off, he said, 'See ya! Hopefully, this goes well,' and we said, 'Good luck, Tom.'"

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 , the franchise's seventh installment, is scheduled for release in July 2023.

Mission impossible 8's dead reckoning villain return teased by star: "hard to kill".

Tom Cruise rides outside of an airplane upside down in new Mission: Impossible 8 stunt photos. Cruise is currently shooting the franchise's eighth installment, returning as IMF agent Ethan Hunt for director Christopher McQuarrie. Cruise is joined by series regulars Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, and Rebecca Ferguson. The franchise's new stars include Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, and Henry Czerny, who returns to the series after appearing in the original 1996 film as IMF lead Eugene Kittridge.

Mission: Impossible 7 recently wrapped production after a string of delays due to the pandemic, which ultimately pushed the film's release date to September 30th, 2022. Initially,  Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 were expected to film back-to-back, but the pandemic changed those plans. McQuarrie has helmed the last three films and is again on board for the eighth, which is now shooting according to some new behind-the-scenes pics.

Tom Cruise is seen performing yet another dangerous stunt for Mission: Impossible 8 (via Fox News ), this time riding on the outside of a 1941 Boeing B75N1 Stearman biplane at 2,000 feet, which flipped upside down, putting the actor upright on the wing. According to Fox , Cruise has been taking flying lessons to prepare the sequence. The images show the actor performing the stunt himself in a series of photos that outline the stunt shot-by-shot.

With Mission: Impossible 7 already done filming and his sequel to Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick in the can, Cruise will have two major releases in 2022. His next venture post Mission: Impossible 8 is yet another first for the actor; a film set in actual space. The untitled film is written by McQuarrie and expected to be directed by Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman, which would have sequences filmed in actual outer space in collaboration with SpaceX. However, before the actor can suit up for a trip to space, he'll need to survive dangerously riding on the wing of an airplane and whatever other insane stunts McQuarrie and he have planned for M:I 8.

Cruise is no stranger to doing his own stunts and is one of the few actors who typically handle them on his own. McQuarrie has said that Mission: Impossible 8 would have even more dangerous stunts than Mission: Impossible 7 , and this looks to be just the beginning of that promise being kept. Each Mission: Impossible film has upped the ante on what Cruise will pull off, and despite being told not to smile repeatedly while shooting, he continues to wow audiences with his commitment. Mission: Impossible 8 is expected to light the fuse on July 7th, 2023.

Tom Cruise films plane stunt

Tom Cruise ’s thirst for adrenaline truly knows no bounds as the actor was spotted rehearsing arguably his most dangerous stunt yet – hanging upside down on the wing of an airplane mid-air.

The Mission: Impossible star took to the skies in Cambridgeshire in a yellow 1941 Boeing B75N1 Stearman biplane.

After departing the Duxford airfield, Tom, 59, ascended to the dizzying heights of 2,000 feet, at which point he obviously decided to climb out of the WWII plane.

The Hollywood star had been sitting in the front of the aircraft with the pilot in the back, then proceeded to climb out of the cockpit before crawling onto the left wing. Tom was harnessed to the 80-year-old plane and was seen dangling himself upside down from the wing. The plane then flipped upside down so that Tom was sitting upright on the wing.

Then the real adrenaline kicked in as the two-seater aircraft took a dive – with Tom still clinging on for dear life on the wing – as well as a loop-the-loop. The movie star, clad in a brown jumpsuit and black helmet, then crawled back into the cockpit as the plane descended to land.

It’s not known what project Tom was rehearsing the stunt for as he recently wrapped up filming the upcoming Mission: Impossible 7, but it’s rumoured an eighth instalment of the franchise is in the works.

Tom is renowned for performing his own stunts with each becoming more death-defying than the last.

Some of his most famous include scaling the world’s tallest building, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, while he also clung to the side of an Airbus A400M at 1,000 feet in the opening scene of Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation.

The actor’s co-star Rebecca Ferguson recently teased what’s in store for M:I7, and told Metro.co.uk at the Dune premiere: ‘It’s just darker, gruesome, character driven. Oh my god – things changing, the status quo – it’s chaos.

‘And incredible stunts – but we all know that. It’s just more. More, more, more.’

Tom Cruise films plane stunt

Top Gun star Tom is a keen flyer and boasts both a helicopter licence and a fixed-wings pilot’s licence, which should stand him in good stead as he masters an 80-year-old aircraft.

A source recently told The Sun : ‘Tom had started to learn to fly a Boeing Stearman biplane earlier this year for a major stunt scene in Mission: Impossible 8.

‘It’s obviously a highly skilled task but as usual, he has no plans to cut any corners or bring in a stuntman.

‘Filming has only just wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 but Tom has not given himself a break.’

Mission: Impossible 7 is set for release on September 30, 2022.

McQuarrie captioned the image, which features Cruise hanging on to the top wing of a biplane as it gets ready to perform an aerial manoeuvre, with the message: “Happy 60th Birthday, Tom.”

Last December, the U.K. Sun published pics of the actor hanging upside down from the wing of a Second World War plane. According to the Sun , Cruise was in the plane as it took off from Duxford Aerodrome in Cambridgeshire and once it hit 2,000 feet, the daredevil then exited the cockpit and made his way onto the left wing. Harnessed to the aircraft, he then hung upside down as the plane flipped over, with Cruise snapped sitting upright on the wing.

It was earlier reported that the action man had been learning how to fly planes for M:I 8 .

A source from the set told the Sun : “Tom had started to learn to fly a Boeing Stearman biplane earlier this year for a major stunt scene in Mission: Impossible 8 . It’s obviously a highly skilled task but as usual he has no plans to cut any corners or bring in a stuntman.”

The insider added: “Trying to film jaw-dropping scenes with an 80-year-old plane is particularly dangerous.”

In an interview with Empire , Cruise declared a sequence from next summer’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , in which he parachutes off of a motorbike as it plunges over a cliff, the scariest stunt he has performed in the 26 years he’s been playing IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the series.

“If the wind was too strong, it would blow me off the ramp,” Cruise said . “The helicopter (filming the scene) was a problem because I didn’t want to be hammering down that ramp at top speed and get hit by a stone. Or if I departed in a weird way, we didn’t know what was going to happen with the bike. I had about six seconds once I departed the ramp to pull the chute and I don’t want to get tangled in the bike. If I do, that’s not going to end well.”

During a Toronto stop on his press tour for 2015’s Rogue Nation , Cruise admitted that all of the stunts over the years have been a little challenging.

“The Mojave scene (from M:I 2 ) … The Burj (from Ghost Protocol ), that was dangerous. The A400 (in Rogue Nation ) was really dangerous. The motorcycle (scene in Rogue Nation ), that was dangerous too.” But he added, “I’m an extreme guy. And I want to entertain.”

Plus, he continued, sometimes having a look of panic adds to the authenticity of what moviegoers see up on the screen.

“There’s a little bit of panicking. But it helps the performance.”

Cruise currently stars in Top Gun: Maverick , reprising his role as Pete Mitchell from the 1986 original.

He rang in his big day at the 2022 British Grand Prix on Sunday where Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton wished him a happy birthday.

Cruise, who is a longtime fan of the sport, told Sky Sports he was rooting for Hamilton, who came in third place.

“He’s a great friend of mine. I hope he has a great day,” Cruise said.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hits theatres July 14, 2023.

Watch Tom Cruise Hang Outside a Plane in Insane MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 Video

Raw video proves that this is one of Cruise's craziest stunts ever.

By now we’re all familiar with the fact that, whenever possible, Tom Cruise does his own stunts. Your script calls for the character to run around outside the tallest building in the world? Tom Cruise will do it (though that one  almost didn’t happen ). For Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation , Cruise takes on one of his biggest stunt challenges yet: standing out on the outside of a plane while it takes off. The plane doesn’t just go fast down the runway and then stop—it literally takes off into the air, with Tom Cruise, Hollywood actor Tom Cruise , hanging outside on the wing.

We’ve been inundated with so many CG-enhanced stunt and set pieces recently that it’s become hard to be really “wowed” by something, but with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation , Paramount Pictures wants everyone to know that this is the real deal. As such, they’ve released a brief featurette that includes raw video of Cruise performing the stunt, and it’s insane. When someone like Tom Cruise admits that this stunt had him “scared shitless,” you know it’s a little intense.

And this is only one piece of the film! For another stunt, Cruise learned how to hold his breath for six minutes so director Christopher McQuarrie could shoot an underwater sequence in one take. I can’t wait to see this movie.

Watch the stunt video below. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation opens in theaters on July 31st and also stars Rebecca Ferguson , Simon Pegg , Ving Rhames , Jeremy Renner , Alec Baldwin , and Sean Harris .

Tom Cruise seen hanging UPSIDE DOWN on wing of a WWII Biplane in Cambridge for Mission: Impossible 8 stunt

ACTION star Tom Cruise has been seen rehearsing one of his most dangerous stunts ever that involved him hanging UPSIDE DOWN on the wing of a war plane.

The 59-year-old star was spotted high above the skies of Cambridge as he practised climbing onto the plane wing as it did a loop-the-loop 2,000ft in the air.

Tom Cruise was spotted rehearsing one of his most dangerous stunts ever

Tom climbed out of the 1941 Boeing B75N1 Stearman biplane and clung on to the wing as the aircraft nosedived and performed acrobatics.

The jaw-dropping stunts were one of many incredible feats the actor is doing for the upcoming Mission: Impossible 8 film.

The iconic biplane took off from Duxford Aerodrome in Cambridgeshire and once it hit 2,000ft, Tom climbed out of the cockpit and crawled onto the left wing.

Attached to the plane by a harness, Tom then dangled himself upside down from the wing.

The plane was then flipped by the pilot, leaving Tom sitting upright on the wing and from there the plane nosedived and did the incredible spin.

Tom then climbed back into the plane before it landed back on the tarmac.

Another biplane flew beside Tom's yellow plane to practice the camera shots for when they start filming.

He wore a khaki jumpsuit and black helmet for the daring stunt after spending months learning how to fly the plane.

At the beginning of October, The Sun revealed that the Minority Report actor was learning to  fly a World War Two military plane.

A source from the set told the Sun: “Tom had started to learn to fly a Boeing Stearman biplane earlier this year for a major stunt scene in Mission: Impossible 8.

“It’s obviously a highly skilled task but as usual he has no plans to cut any corners or bring in a stuntman."

The insider continued: “Filming has only just wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 but Tom has not given himself a break.

“And trying to film jaw-dropping scenes with an 80-year-old plane is particularly dangerous.”

Back in September, Tom and his film crew celebrated after they had wrapped up shooting M:I's seventh movie.

Due to the pandemic, filming was fraught with setbacks including multiple Covid outbreaks on set, causing the production to be shut down for weeks at a time.

Tom left fans shocked last month when he was spotted looking totally different as he attended an LA Dodgers baseball game in San Francisco.

Photographed watching the game alongside his son, he looked noticeably different as he appeared more "puffy" than his Top Gun days.

Tom could be heard saying: 'Hi everyone, wish I could be there with you, I'm sorry for all of the extra noise. As you can see I'm filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible.

'Right now we're over gorgeous Blyde River Canyon in stunning South Africa and we're making this film for the big screen for audiences to see in local theatres.'

It comes after Tom, who plays Ethan Hunt in the franchise, reportedly apologised for ruining a couple's hike while filming the scene.

Jason and Sarah Haygarth were going for a walk nearby when they spotted the production crew's helicopter.

'Toward the end of the walk, last peak, we start seeing helicopters coming up a ravine and dropping people off the top… We were like, this didn't seem right,' Jason told Extra.

'We found out the people, they were the cameramen. When we came to the peak, we got stopped by what must have been a production team member, saying, "You can't go. We're going to land the helicopter off the top…" So we took a selfie,' he said.

After the choppers landed, the couple continued on their way where they ran into Tom strapping on a paraglider.

'I could tell it was him straight away,' Sarah said. 'By the time we got there, people were talking about Mission: Impossible was being filmed … but I was expecting a stunt double.'

'He apologised first for the noise,' Jason added. '"Sorry, guys, I know we spoiled your walk with the noise." And then he said, "I like your dog."'

'We asked, "What are you doing ?" Then he said, "I'm going to jump off." I was like, "You're going to do what?"

'He said, "I'm going to jump off." Just before he jumped off, he said, "See ya! Hopefully this goes well," and we said, "Good luck, Tom."

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One has a current release date of July 14, 2023.

The film, the seventh in the franchise, will star Tom alongside Hayley Atwell, Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg, Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson and The Princess Bride star Cary Elwes.

Tom Cruise dangles from airplane wing while filming for 'Mission: Impossible 8'

Tom Cruise (File Photo | Associated Press)

WASHINGTON: Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise was recently photographed performing his own nail-biting stunt while filming 'Mission: Impossible 8'.

According to Fox News, Cruise climbed out of the cockpit of a 1941 Boeing B75N1 Stearman biplane at 2,000 feet and sat on the wing. He then dangled himself upside down from the wing.

As Cruise hung upside down, the plane flipped upside down so that the actor was sitting upright on the wing. He was attached to the plane with a harness during the stunt.

The 'Top Gun' actor has been taking flying lessons to prepare for the filming of 'Mission: Impossible 8'.

Cruise commenced filming for 'Mission: Impossible 8' immediately after wrapping up filming for 'Mission: Impossible 7'. Both films were announced at the same time, with one being released in 2022 and one in 2023.

The coronavirus did stall filming of 'Mission: Impossible 7', which pushed the expected release date of 'Mission: Impossible 8' to July of 2023.

Cruise is known for his stunts, including the time he climbed the Burj Khalifa, known as the world's tallest building. He recently reflected on his career and his decision to perform all of his own stunts in his action movies.

As per Fox News, during an appearance on 'The Graham Norton Show', Cruise said, "I am a very physical actor, and I love doing them. I study and train and take a lot of time figuring it all out. I have broken a lot of bones."

He added, "The first time of any stunt is nerve-wracking, but it also exhilarating. I have been told a few times during shooting a stunt to stop smiling."

What planes does tom cruise own.

Let’s take a look at Tom Cruise’s aircraft collection.

  • Tom Cruise is a licensed pilot with qualifications as a multi-engine instrument-rated pilot and helicopter flying skills.
  • Cruise owns a collection of airplanes, including a vintage P-51 Mustang fighter from World War II and a Gulfstream IV G4 jet.
  • There may be additional aircraft in Cruise's fleet, such as a HondaJet and a Bombardier Challenger 300 jet, according to a travel expert.

It wasn't just a show for 'Top Gun.' Tom Cruise is one of the few actors who genuinely love aviation. He has been a licensed pilot since 1994 and is able to fly several types of aircraft. However, it doesn't stop with a license. The famous Hollywood actor also has a collection of airplanes varying from vintage fighters to business jets.

What kind of license does Cruise have?

In various discussions, Tom Cruise has revealed that his affinity for aviation was crucial to his initial attraction to the original 'Top Gun.' He shared that he holds qualifications as a multi-engine instrument-rated pilot and has continued to enhance his skill set throughout his life. Notably, he acquired helicopter flying skills for the remarkable stunts seen in the 2018 film 'Mission Impossible: Fallout.'

Plane collection

North American P-51 Mustang fighter

During a segment on The Late Late Show, Cruise took host James Corden for a ride in his own vintage P-51 Mustang fighter plane. Tom Cruise acquired this World War II fighter in 2001, which was initially built in 1946.

The P-51 Mustang was an American long-range fighter bomber that served alongside other conflicts during World War II and the Korean War. It was developed by North American Aviation and was retired in 1984. Nevertheless, even today, the fighter is utilized for air racing by civilian pilots. After being donated to an Illinois museum, the plane underwent restoration in 1997.

Making his recent performance in ' Top Gun: Maverick ,' Tom Cruise takes to the skies in the P-51 Mustang fighter. What adds intrigue to this is the revelation that he wasn't just portraying the pilot on screen – he was actually at the controls of his very own P-51 Mustang fighter.

Gulfstream IV G4 jet

With an estimated price tag of $20 million, this jet boasts the capability to accommodate as many as 19 passengers. Notably, it reportedly comes furnished with luxuries, including a jacuzzi and a dedicated movie-screening room, according to Business Insider.

The Gulfstream IV G4 is a long-range executive jet designed and built by Gulfstream , a General Dynamics company based in Savannah, Georgia, United States, from 1985 until 2018. Its production spanned from 1985 to 2018, resulting in over 900 G4 units taking to the skies. This jet can cover distances of up to 7,100 kilometers and achieve a top speed of 850 kilometers per hour.

Is there more?

Whether the actor has more aircraft in its fleet has been under speculation as it was never officially confirmed. But according to a Business Insider report, in addition to the vintage fighter jet and the Gulfstream IV G4, Jack Sweeney, who is famous for reporting the travel habits of numerous celebrities, including Elon Musk, said he has been able to identify Cruise's HondaJet and a Bombardier Challenger 300 jet.

If You Could, You Would

Tom Cruise is a highly decorated actor with money to spend and an undying dedication to aviation. As a certified pilot, Cruise flies his two planes regularly to sets, for vacation, or for his wife’s groceries.

His Gulfstream IV is one of the finest private jets in the world right now. Manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace, this $20 Million luxury plane carries up to 19 people. Did we forget to mention that it has a built-in jacuzzi and movie theater installed?

However, that $20M plane isn’t Cruise’s favorite airplane. That distinction belongs to his own personal P-51 Mustang. This iconic warbird was built in 1946, just after the war, and was situated in a museum before the actor purchased it in 2001. Today, this Merlin-engine-powered warbird has an estimated price of $4 Million.

Nobody can blame Cruise for his expensive taste in vehicles. After all, if we all had the money to own and fly any of these planes, we all would in an instant.
