Second time doing this trip. Weather was good. Staff very friendly. Saw lots of birds of various species. Dolphins accompanied the boat around Howth Head. Dined afterwards in the Our House which is one of the many good restaurants on Howth Pier. I would highly recommend this trip

Stunning Views of Dublin – For anyone wishing to capture stunning views of Dublin with unique angles only possible from a boat, this tour is the ideal way to do so. We were blessed with great weather as well, although the waves were a bit choppy. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly.

This trip takes you from the city to Dun Laoghaire Harbour in the south and from there to the traditional fishing of Howth , where you’ll find some great places to walk and amazing fish restaurants.

What you’ll see on your way to both destinations are sights you wouldn’t otherwise see from such a great angle, including the Poolbeg Lighthouse , Ireland Eye and the docklands.

Howth Harbour is known for its many seals so watch out for those grey heads bobbing up and down or basking in the sun.

  • Departure point: Dun Laoighre
  • Cost: €25 per seat
  • Length of time: 60-70 minutes

Sights you will see on the way include the Convention Centre, which has hosted some 2,000 events since opening in 2010.

The stunning glass-fronted atrium gives viewers panoramic views of the River Liffey, and on the cruises you will get to see it from a different angle. It’s fantastic at night, thanks to the lighting at the front, making it a distinctive feature of the Dublin skyline.

Sail from the city to the beautiful harbour at Dun Laoghaire. This port town has been popular with visitors since Victorian times and here you will find brightly painted villas, palm trees and townland parks.

You could try sailing, take a dip in the waters, visit a museum and, of course, ensure it’s a proper seaside trip by eating a 99 ice cream cone on the pier.

All Dublin Bay Cruise participants can take advantage of the discount offered on the DART trains, entitling you to travel between any station on the Dun Laoghaire/Howth/Dun Laoghaire DART line on the same day of sailing for only €2.00.

4. Dun Laoghaire to Howth

howth pier

Howth is one of Ireland’s most beautiful fishing villages, and a popular place for the seal population. It is also one of Dublin’s oldest working harbours and a busy fishing port.

You can spend a morning doing the Howth Cliff Walk or one of the  many  other things to do in Howth , or you can kick-back with a meal in one of the Howth restaurants .

The Waterside and McNeill’s of Howth specialise in fish and chips, while King Stiric offers Dublin Bay prawns and lobster that you can eat in view of the sea that they came from or why not try oysters at the East Café bar?

5. Howth to Dun Laoghaire

howth boat tours

  • Departure point: Howth

Once you’ve finished your tour of Howth, why not visit Dun Laoghaire, where you can relax on board the ship with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine?

One the journey, you will pass the island of Ireland’s Eye and Lambay Island to the north, and you will also be able to see the wildlife sanctuary at North Bull Island . The island has the most designations of any site in Ireland, including National Bird Sanctuary, National Nature Reserve and Special Protection Area.

Birds on the island include wading species such as Eurasian curlews and oystercatchers and redshanks, and others such as shelduck, teal and pale-bellied brent geese.

6. Howth to Ireland’s Eye

ireland's eye

  • Length of time: One hour

What could be more relaxing than an hour-long cruise on the St Bridget from Howth Harbour to Ireland’s Eye ?

You can settle back in your seat on board with a cup of tea or coffee or even a glass of wine and enjoy the bird’s eye (boom, boom!) view of the bird and seal colony at Ireland’s Eye.

The island is also home to the remains of a former monastic settlement established there at the beginning of the 8th century, where the Garlands of Howth religious manuscript is thought to have been written. These days, large numbers of guillemots, terns, gannets, razorbills, cormorants and puffins nest there.

We just returned home after our 7 day World Tour of Ireland. Only one word to describe our trip, FABULOUS ! What a great time. From the Cliffs of Moher to Blarney Castle and everything in between, it could not have been more exciting and enjoyable.  Brian, our guide, was extraordinary. He was extremely knowledgeable, funny and caring. What a great pleasure it was having him as our guide. I must also say that our tour group couldn’t have been friendlier. Sean was great! He was our driver/tour guide. We only had 5 in our group. The hotels/BB’s were very nice and in easy walking distance to everything in the towns we stayed in. He answered our questions and got the answers when he didn’t know. He was very accommodating to my friend who wanted to do a memorial. He picked a special place and video taped it.  We were on an easy schedule. We had time on our own to shop, rest, or whatever. Sean was prompt, took care of everything, and made our trip stress free. Ireland is beautiful and the people we came across were very nice.  A Tripadvisor Reviewer (read more reviews )

Comfortable trip down the Liffey

Lovely sunny afternoon cruise down the Liffey. Good commentary, comfortable seat.. it was great introduction to Dublin history up to present day. Good views from all seat to take photos. No toilet on board but the cruise is only 45 minutes.

Gorgeous day on the river Liffey very lucky with the weather. I was disappointed in the trip as previous comments on Tripadvisor described the commentary as fun and humorous but I think we must have been unlucky in getting a new employee as she didn’t seem to know a lot, was not at all amusing and I might have well been reading a guide book. Such a shame as I’d been looking forward to this.

This is quite a short trip up and down the Liffey, but gives a valuable insight into Dublin from a different perspective. Enjoyed the views from the river and the commentary from the tour guide. There was a lack of anywhere to sit while we waited for boarding to commence once we had arrived, although the guy checking tickets helpfully suggested we could go and wait inside the building where the EPIC museum is housed once he had checked us in.

I really enjoyed this trip. It was packed full of the history of Ireland and with lots of banter and good humour. All of the staff were lovely and friendly and I came away feeling that I know more about Ireland (I actually want to come back and go to the EPCI museum next, which comes highly recommended). The boat was fully booked but I was able to buy the last two tickets on the day. If you don't have any time constraints, you can just pay when you get there but if you are restricted, then I would advise you purchase the ticket in advance. It is value for money and I would recommend it (on the day price was £17.27 and I was able to pay using my credit card). There are no toilets on board but the journey is only around 50 minutes - so you can use the toilets nearby before you board. If the tide is low then you don't go very far but you still get to see a lot of landmarks and get a good sense of the history.

From checkin to our exit the staff was helpful and friendly. We learned a lot in a short time. Was very comfortable and lovely.

Great informative trip along the river. Friendly staff with great knowledge of surrounding area. 45 minutes to relax and take in the scenery.

I was really looking forward to this river cruise and was disappointed. During our cruise, the tide was low so we had to miss much of the river. The tour company should have expected the low tide and the description should have been adjusted or the price adjusted. We did not see much that we could not have seen from a bus. The tour guide was very good, giving us lots of interesting information.

dublin boat trip

A unique Irish island trip you can take from Dublin that many don't know about

T here's an Irish island day trip you can take from Dublin that is fun for all the family. Most people associate Dublin with the Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Goal, and its buzzing traditional Irish pubs.

However, traveling not too far from the city center, you can have some really gorgeous days out. And even further than that, you can travel out to a small island that offers great views and lovely swimming opportunities.

The island in question is called Ireland's Eye. Located just off the north Dublin coast, you can reach Ireland's Eye by taking a short boat ride from the harbor in the village of Howth.

Read more: Ireland's four-day ‘Slow Travel Experience’ is a city break like no other

Howth has enough things to make it worthy of a visit during your vacation in Ireland . The cliff walk here offers insanely scenic views and the pubs and restaurants here offer up some great food and drink .

But if you manage to find the time, a boat trip to Ireland's Eye could be a worthy excursion to include in your Dublin itinerary .

Historically, the island was called 'Adros' by Ptolomy, 'Adrea Deserta' by Pliny, and 'Andros' and 'Edria' by other early navigators. It is now uninhabited but on the island, you will discover evidence of people who were here centuries ago.

Here, you will discover the ruins of a Martello tower and a church. Additionally, there is a lovely beach here and some hills and landscapes for you to wander around and explore.

Three monks established Cill Mac Neasáin church here around 700 AD. There, they created a holy manuscript copy of the four Gospels called the Garland of Howth which is now located in Trinity College in Dublin City Centre.

Ken Doyle of Ireland’s Eye Ferries runs daily trips here from the west pier in Howth. The company also runs numerous boat tours of the area and a highlight for many people who go on these excursions is the wildlife they meet.

Notably, the island is home to many species of nesting birds. Additionally, the island has many natural features to be discovered.

One of them is the high-standing rock named 'The Stack', located on the northeastern side of the island. Here, you will find species of seabirds such as guillemots, gannets, razorbills, fulmars, and gulls.

Plus, grey seals are abundant in these waters. After your adventure to the island, you can reward yourself with a pint and traditional Irish grub in one of Howth's many pubs such as Connolly's or The Bloody Stream.
