She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Superior, approximately 150 miles from the Twin Cities, Duluth, Minnesota, is the state’s fifth-largest city with a population of nearly 87,000. In addition to being home to world-class outdoor exploration opportunities, Duluth is one of the country’s most unique port cities — the Port of Duluth is the world’s furthest inland port accessible to oceangoing ships and is the largest and busiest port on the Great Lakes. With its famous 1905 Aerial Lift Bridge, the country’s only all-freshwater aquarium, and so much more, it is a city worth exploring, whether you live near town, visit frequently, or only have a few hours at your disposal.

On a recent trip to visit family in the North Star State, we jumped at the opportunity to visit my little brother in Duluth, who relocated to attend college at the University of Minnesota: Duluth and has never left. He gave us the insider scoop on all of the best places to visit, and we had an unforgettable time. While we probably spent just as much time driving as we did exploring, it was well worth the adventure.

For this reason and so many more, Duluth is an ideal destination for families and when traveling on a budget.

Additional planning tip: June, July, and August are the warmest ( and most recommended ) months to visit Duluth as temperatures are in the 70s to low 80s.

These are the perfect, and most enjoyable months to enjoy Lake Superior!

Enger Park and Enger Tower

As one of the best things to do in Duluth, we always start the morning of Day 1 off with a trip to Enger Tower located within Enger Park.

Enger Tower stands at an elevation of 531′ above Lake Superior, providing panoramic views of Lake Superior and Duluth’s west end.

After strolling around the beautifully landscaped gardens of the park, be sure to climb the many staircases of the historic Enger Tower.

Each level of the tower provides fantastic views and photo ops!

Time spent: 30-45 minutes

Duluth Depot visit during our Duluth family vacation

Duluth Depot

Afterward, head down the hill to visit the Duluth Depot Railroad Museum and to ride the North Shore Scenic Railroad.

Duluth Depot is a historic train station built in 1892 that served seven different railway lines.

The museum here includes several historic trains (that you can walk through!), train replicas, train memorabilia, and displays of storefronts from the olden days.

Now on the list of U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the Depot is also home to the Lake Shore Scenic Railroad.

Lake Shore Scenic Railroad offers narrated train rides along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Best sure to check out the weekly schedule to see if your trip aligns with the ever-popular Zephyr ride, Music & Pizza Train ride, or Thomas the Train event.

Time spent: 1 hour at the Depot museums; various lengths of train excursions available.

Canal Park, Duluth

After touring the Duluth Depot, head across the Interstate to spend the rest of the day in Canal Park.

Located in the harbor of Lake Superior, Canal Park is the cornerstone of any Duluth travel itinerary whether you’re heading there with kids or going to Duluth as a couple .

Canal Park is the conversion of an old warehouse district into a variety of restaurants, shops, art galleries, indoor and outdoor cafes, and lakeside hotels.

While strolling through Canal Park, the highlight is watching ships from around the world entering the harbor.

Kids never get tired of watching the port’s famous Aerial Lift Bridge rise up and down to let passing ships through as its iconic whistle notifies onlookers.

Be sure not to miss an incoming or departing ship by reviewing the daily ship schedule!

Regardless of ‘big ships’ coming through, the Aerial Lift Bridge rises every hour on the hour, and half-hour throughout the entire day to let scheduled resident and tourist boats pass under.

Other things to do in Canal Park include:

  • The Duluth Lakewalk (a 7.5-mile paved pedestrian and bike trail stretching from Bayfront Park to Brighton Beach)
  • North Lighthouse Pier
  • The free Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center
  • Multiple splash fountains
  • Horse-drawn carriage rides
  • William A. Irvin floating ship museum

Additional planning tips: There are open-air parking lots located directly within Canal Park that require either a pre-paid hourly or daily fee.

Park your vehicle in one central location ( or keep it parked at your hotel listed below).

Being that all of the attractions in Canal Park are located within walking distance of one another, you don’t have to drive from place to place.

Time spent: All afternoon and evening

Vista Fleet: Duluth Family Vacation

Vista Fleet

In order to fully experience Duluth and Lake Superior, I recommend taking a narrated sightseeing tour on the Vista Fleet .

With the dock and ticket center located directly in Canal Park, hopping aboard a Vista Fleet cruise is not only convenient, but it is one of the most memorable things you’ll do in Duluth.

On the 75-minute Duluth Waterfront Tour, for instance, you’ll get to cruise under the Aerial Lift Bridge and sail along Duluth’s shoreline while learning about Lake Superior.

Afterward, the tour takes you for a behind-the-scenes sail into the shipping harbor as you learn about cargo ships, the Coast Guard, and Duluth’s shipping industry.

With several other cruise options available, the amazing views you’ll see on the open decks of the Vista Fleet are completely unique to this area.

Grandma's Saloon & Grill restaurant

Where To Eat and Drink in Duluth, MN: Day 1

Have lunch at the original Grandma’s Saloon and Grill (our #1 pick for the best restaurants in Canal Park !).

Enjoy salads, sandwiches, and entrees on the patio while practically sitting at the foot of the Aerial Lift Bridge.

Treat the family to an afternoon ice cream cone or float at Grandma’s Ice Cream Boxcar.

We visit the Boxcar, which is located right next to the Maritime Museum, every time we visit Canal Park.

Later, walk 1 mile down the paved Lakewalk and enjoy dinner at Fitger’s Brewhouse Brewery and Grille .

Fitger’s Brewhouse is one of the best breweries in Duluth and has award-winning lagers and ales handmade from locally harvested ingredients and Lake Superior waters.

The pub food is designed to complement the beer and is made from fresh, local ingredients as well.

My favorites are their wheat ales and the Brewhouse Fish Tacos!

Rain Option: Day 1

If you are seeking shelter or an indoor attraction located directly in Canal Park, check out Adventure Zone .

Choose single play or a daily pass to play laser tag, mini-golf, and arcade games.

Batting cages and a climbing wall are also located here.

Duluth Lighthouse

Duluth Family Vacation: Day 2

  • Take a stroll on the Duluth Lakewalk and enjoy the shops in Canal Park
  • Drive over the Aerial Lift Bridge and spend a couple of hours at Park Point .
  • Have lunch and a beer at Canal Park Brewing Company .
  • Visit the Great Lakes Aquarium .
  • Visit Lake Superior Zoo .
  • Stop for dinner at Duluth Grill or OMC Smokehouse .

Duluth Lakewalk

Wake up in the morning and have breakfast at your hotel located in Canal Park.

Grab a cup of coffee from Caribou Coffee and join the many other people that start off their morning by strolling along the beautiful lakefront.

Spend the entire morning enjoying Canal Park by way of its scenic Lakewalk.

One of the most popular trails in the state, it includes both a paved bike trail and a boarded walking path.

The Lakewalk is both stroller and pet-friendly too!

Read its suggested mile-by-mile guide here while being sure to stop for plenty of rock skipping along the way!

Next, purchase a 1-hour rental from Wheel Fun rentals !

Whether it’s a 3 – 6 person surrey, deuce coup, quad sport, kids bike, or cruiser, everyone in the family can find the right vehicle.

Swim at Park Point

After lunch, drive across the Aerial Life Bridge and visit Park Point, Duluth’s only sandy beach and the world’s largest freshwater sandbar.

With an average temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit, Lake Superior is not our favorite swimming hole.

A short trip across the Aerial Life Bridge, however, and you can stop at this iconic beach, find places to skip stones, and dip your feet into the chilly Great Lake!

Time spent: 1 hour

Finally, finish off the day by visiting one, or both, of these animal-related experiences.

Great Lakes Aquarium

A popular Duluth attraction, The Great Lakes Aquarium is unique in that it features freshwater animals and habitats.

There are more than 200 different species of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles at this gigantic indoor aquarium.

Explore the specific living in the Great Lakes through a variety of interactive exhibits and gigantic tanks. Be sure to check out our best tips for visiting Great Lakes Aquarium here!

Lake Superior Zoo

Lake Superior Zoo located in Duluth, MN is one of our favorite zoos in Minnesota !

Located 7 miles from Canal Park, Lake Superior Zoo is an indoor/outdoor zoo with animal exhibits and feedings, as well as education programs.

The region’s only zoo, this 16-acre attraction houses an African Lion, tigers, kangaroos, deer, and nocturnal animals.

There is a lot of walking required at this zoo, but the wide variety of animals makes it well worth your time.

Where to Eat and Drink in Duluth, MN: Day 2

After you’ve strolled the Lakewalk, be sure to stop for lunch and a beverage at Canal Park Brewing Company.

This is another must-do for us and has become something that we look forward to every time we visit Duluth!

With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, a patio with fire pits and corn hole, its laid-back atmosphere could find you here for hours!

Craft beer, cheese curds, and Lake Superior in the background…. yes, please !

On your way out of town, stop for dinner at Trip Advisor’s #1 ranked restaurant in Duluth, Duluth Grill .

Known for serving the highest level of comfort food, Duluth Grill has been featured on Food Network’s Diners and Drive-Ins.

It is a favorite for both tourists and locals alike!

Visit Glensheen Mansion on your Duluth family vacation!

Rain Option: Day 2

If you are in need of an indoor activity, venture outside of Canal Park and tour Glensheen Mansion, The Historic Congdon Estate.

This awesome tour takes you inside the 39-room, 32,000-square-foot mansion built in 1905.

All of the original furniture, photographs, dinnerware, and bedding have been preserved to make you feel just as if you are stepping back in time.

Be sure to check out our kid-friendly tips to ensure a fascinating Glensheen Mansion Tour .

This is truly one of our favorite Duluth attractions!

Duluth Family Vacation: Day 3

  • Spend the entire day driving up North Shore Scenic Drive to Grand Marais, and then back to Duluth.

North Shore Scenic Drive

Featuring a plethora of rushing waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, state parks, and epic views of Lake Superior, the pristine beauty of the Minnesota North Shore cannot be missed.

Duluth Family Vacation: If you have more time

If you’re looking for an outdoor winter adventure, Spirit Mountain is a premier ski and snowboard resort located in Duluth.

There are over 22 downhill runs that all offer epic views of Lake Superior from their summit.

Spirit Mountain also has snow tubing and downhill fat-tire biking.

In the summer months, the Spirit Mountain ski area transforms into Spirit Mountain Adventure Park !

Here, you’ll find kid-friendly attractions such as alpine slides, mini-golf, zip-lining, and scenic chair-lift rides.

Summer at Spirit Mountain also offers camping, hiking, and mountain biking.

We absolutely love visiting Spirit Mountain Adventure Park during the warm, summer months.

Where to Stay in Duluth: Duluth Hotels

In order to maximize your Duluth 3-day itinerary, I highly recommend that you stay in a hotel that is located within Canal Park.

Although there are other options on where to stay in Duluth with kids, the convenience of staying within Canal Park is unbeatable as you’re within walking distance of all of the most popular attractions.

Your final selection of Canal Park Duluth hotels will be based on availability, however.

Hotels in Canal Park book up extremely fast during the summer months, as well as in the winter when Duluth hosts their free Bentleyville “Tour of Lights”.

Each of the links below contains valuable images, descriptions, and reviews of my favorite hotels in Canal Park that are just steps away from Lake Superior:

  • Canal Park Lodge
  • Hampton Inn Duluth, Canal Park
  • Lift Bridge Lodge

And our favorite, The Suites Hotel of Waterfront Plaza .

The Suites is pet-friendly and offers a free hot breakfast.

It has an amazing pool area that includes a separate kiddie pool, hot tub, and sauna.

And finally, though it is not located in Canal Park, Edgewater Hotel & Waterpark in Duluth is home to one of Minnesota’s best indoor waterparks !

I, personally, am not a huge fan of the accommodations, but families with small children definitely enjoy the convenience of the onsite waterpark, called Edge.

Edge is open to both hotel guests and the general public when purchasing a day pass if you’d simply like to head there to swim and play for the day.

For a complete search of Duluth hotels along with a great rate, use the following search:

*Thank you to Visit Duluth for the hosted experience on the Duluth Waterfront Tour aboard the Vista Star, the tickets to the Lake Superior Zoo, Glensheen Mansion, and Great Lakes Aquarium, as well as a fabulous dinner at Grandma’s Saloon! All opinions are my own.

Thank you Jen for sharing your itinerary. If you are not staying at a hotel within Canal Park, are there accessible parking areas (even free parking spots) that visitors can use when touring the area for the day?

You are so welcome! Yes, there is a large parking lot in the center of Canal Park, it does cost money however. I am not sure of any free parking within walking distance to Canal Park. Have a great time!

Awesome! We are hopefully going up for a week in July, and this will be perfect for our first two days up there! What time does your family usually get up and moving on vacation? Is it worth waking up early and hearing all the whining? lol

11 of the best things to do in Duluth, Minnesota: experience life on the edge of Lake Superior

Sarah Lempa

Feb 1, 2022 • 7 min read

Redheaded woman standing on the rocky shores of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota

From enjoying the beauty of Lake Superior to sampling the best beer from local breweries, here are the top things to do in Duluth, Minnesota © Bryant Scannell / Getty Images

Small-town charm and the abundant joys that come with being next to a gigantic body of water – Lake Superior, to be specific – have made Duluth a favorite place to visit among Minnesotans and travelers from around the Midwest.

Mention Duluth to out-of-state folks, and they might ask, “Where?” but in Minnesota , you’ll likely get an emphatic “We’re already planning our next weekend there.” Endearing restaurants and cafes, along with some of the state’s most lauded outdoor destinations, render this small city worth your while. Make the two-hour drive north from the Twin Cities to discover the top things to do in Duluth, Minnesota.

Check out the Aerial Lift Bridge and Canal Park

Framing Lake Superior by day and illuminating the harbor by night, Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge is the icon of the city. You’ll see it on postcards, keychains and local art. It dates back to 1905 and is easily the most tourist-frequented point in Duluth – for good reason. You’ll find plenty of people milling about, watching boats of all sizes pass by, some upwards of 1000ft long. The bridge is the center of the action, with neighboring Canal Park full of restaurants, gift shops, antique stores and several spots to grab a sweet treat like ice cream or fudge. Make an afternoon or evening out of it.

Grab a beer at a local brewery

Minnesotans take beer seriously, and if you’re unfamiliar, that probably means you’re missing out. Duluth is no exception. Join a local brewery tour or wander on your own, sipping on hoppy IPAs and other creative inventions. Duluth has more breweries than the average person should sample in one afternoon, but do try a few if you imbibe. Bent Paddle Brewing Co. , Ursa Minor Brewing and Hoops Brewing are all key players on the scene.

A lighthouse on the top of a rocky cliff glows pink the low sunlight. The lake below is frosty

Take a scenic drive to Split Rock Lighthouse

Not only is Split Rock Lighthouse a postcard-in-real-life type of place, but also the entire hour-long drive from Duluth is nothing short of glorious, following the shoreline with too-many-to-count stopoff areas for skyline views. This particular lighthouse happens to be Instagram famous, and it’s one of the most photographed and visited spots in all of Minnesota. Standing tall on a giant rock bluff overlooking Lake Superior, Split Rock Lighthouse is magical at all times of the day, though sunrise and sunset certainly do it some extra justice.

Head to the top of Enger Tower for city views

Of all possible reasons to walk up a five-story winding staircase, the view from the top of Enger Tower takes the cake. The climb to the top, 80ft over Duluth’s West End, yields sweeping 360-degree views of the city and Lake Superior. Built of locally sourced blue stone in 1939, it’s reminiscent of something from an old-timey period film.

It also happens to have as much history as it does people squinting off into the distance from the top level. In the 1930s, a Norwegian businessman named Bert Enger found massive success in Duluth selling furniture. After he bequeathed a large portion of his estate to the city of Duluth, Enger Tower was built as a tribute to him. Beyond the lofty heights, a handful of different gardens – including a Japanese Garden – surround the tower. When the weather is comfortable, it’s worth visiting the top and walking through the green space.

Stroll the Duluth Lakewalk

More of a hike than a walk, the Duluth Lakewalk is roughly 7 miles of pure lakeside goodness, starting with a boardwalk in town that shifts into a paved trail. Stroll, cycle or skateboard – the parallel pedestrian and bicycle paths draw all types of outdoor enthusiasts. Travelers using wheelchairs will be able to navigate the path with ease, apart from a steeper grade section at 3.3 miles in, heading northbound.

Most folks will opt for the shorter, in-town sections where the boardwalk takes you around some of the city’s most notable sights and landmarks. Head farther north for pristine beach views, quiet wooded parks and plenty of solitude. There’s pretty much a bench with a scenic view every step of the way.

Eat at Grandma’s family-run restaurant

Antique trinkets and history-filled photographs adorn the walls at Grandma’s Saloon & Grill , a family-run restaurant that dates back decades. It’s a Duluth staple, garnering statewide appreciation. You’ll find all the Midwest classics, such as Minnesota wild rice soup – a wondrously rich bowl of hearty rice and creamy broth – and cheese curds, the state’s famous deep fried pillows of mild-flavored young cheddar.

The location, steps away from the Aerial Lift Bridge, doesn’t get any better. Although, after eating your weight in crispy fried onion rings and other comfort foods, walking might feel like a bit of an arduous task. Arrive hungry, and expect to share the restaurant with most of the dining-out crowd on a typical night in town.

Three children stand on the edge of a stream in a wooded area

Hike around Jay Cooke State Park

An absolute jewel of Minnesota, Jay Cooke State Park is well-loved for good reason. A 200ft-long suspension bridge leads into the heart of the park, where roaring waters tumble over jet-black rocks and boulders of all sizes. It makes for a mesmerizing scene, and even though the park gets a solid amount of foot traffic, you’ll have no trouble getting space to yourself.

While it gets much-deserved crowds in the summer, this is a park fit for all four seasons – even the chilly months. With 50 miles of recreational paths, 9 miles of cycling routes, 32 miles of cross-country ski trails and 12 miles of snowmobile trails, its personality depends on which month you visit. At just 20 minutes from central Duluth by car, there’s no excuse to skip it.

Sail around Lake Superior

If you’d rather experience the lake from the water, hop on a 36ft-long sailboat to cruise the glassy waters for an unmissable day trip. Just beyond Duluth’s harbor lies a seemingly endless shoreline, Park Point Duluth – which happens to be the longest freshwater sandbar in the world. It’s formidable on foot, and breathtaking by boat. Full day, half day, sunset and overnight trips are available from various charters, accounting for all types of stays and budgets. For a classic cruise on a sailboat from the 1980s, contact Time Out Sailing or opt for a more modern yacht-style vessel with Vista Fleet .

Go birding at Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory

Avian aficionados flock to Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory , a top-notch spot for birdwatching on the north end of Duluth. Each fall, mass migrations make this destination a busy one, both on foot and in the sky. Hawks, owls and eagles of all types, and osprey are among the commonly sighted, and if you’re lucky, you might see a black vulture.

Even if you’re not brazenly passionate about birds, you can still enjoy the more than 4 miles of hiking trails that wind through the reserve. With some of the state’s best colors in fall and a blanket of wildflowers in the warmer months, it’s ideal for walking around on a mild day.

Admire the art and more at the Duluth Depot

Seeing as it was only a train station back in 1892, the Duluth Depot has had a major glow up in the past century. Nowadays, it holds a variety of attractions: concerts, fitness classes, festivals, art markets and more. It’s also home to the Art Institute, Railroad Museum and several performing arts organizations, including the Arrowhead Chorale . The Duluth Depot still has that historic charm, and it makes for a great afternoon hangout, especially on a rainy day, or around the holidays when seasonal concerts and markets pop up on the busy calendar of events .

Visit the Glensheen Mansion

Saunter into the early 20th century by visiting an opulent 39-room mansion formerly owned by one of the state’s wealthiest families, dating back to 1905. The Glensheen Mansion is something out of a history novel, with decadent architecture and an impressive surrounding landscape. Elegant walnut and mahogany wood panel ceilings, along with stained glass and original furniture from 1908, remain excellently preserved in this late Victorian masterpiece.

It’s like stepping into an incredibly maintained time capsule, without all the dust. On a group or self-guided tour, explore the mansion, cottage, maintenance building, carriage and boat houses, along with 12 acres of lakefront grounds and a terraced garden. The mansion has a lot to see, so save a whole morning or afternoon to do it justice.

Duluth

Duluth is a Great Place for a Getaway

I absolutely love spending time in Duluth, whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or a longer visit when possible. I’ve visited Duluth many times over the years for vacation, as a lunch stop on the way up to the North Shore and even a wedding. My brother-in-law lived there for three years as well, and that gave us a great excuse to drive up from the Twin Cities and visit him often. After a number of trips to Duluth, this is a roundup of my favorite things to do, see and eat in Duluth!

Duluth

Where We Stayed

Duluth has a ton of options from bed and breakfasts, to boutique hotels, Airbnbs and everything in between.  When narrowing down your search, I suggest you first start with what part of town you want to be in. We chose to stay in Canal Park because we wanted to easily walk around and not drive everywhere. We grabbed take out, relaxed at outdoor patios and sat in the harbor watching the waves crash. Being able to walk to all of that is really nice. You can find cheaper options on the outskirts of town, just know you’ll need to drive to get to most of the hot spots, and sometimes parking (especially in the peak summer months) can be a real challenge.

With all of that in mind, we chose to stay at  The Inn on Lake Superior . We’ve stayed here a handful of times because it’s reasonably priced and right in the heart of Canal Park. Here you’ll find large clean rooms, a great view of either Lake Superior or the Aerial Lift Bridge depending on which side of the hotel your room is, free breakfast, access to lakeside fire pits, free s’mores and free bike rentals. This past trip we had a lakeside room and spent a lot of time relaxing on the balcony enjoying the view.

Duluth

1. Kick Off Your Morning With Coffee

There are a handful of great coffee shops in Duluth. Whether you’re looking for a sit down diner or more of a grab and go option, there’s something for everyone. I love Yellow Bike coffee , which is located on the lower level of Fitger’s. They brew quality coffee and offer simple breakfast treats, like pumpkin muffins, which you can take with you and enjoy by the lake.

Duluth

2. Take a Tour of Glensheen

For an incredible step back in history, you’ll want to visit the  Glensheen Mansion . The Congdons were an impressive family of very forward thinking people. If you’ve never visited Glensheen, I highly recommend you add it to your bucket list. In the winter, their Christmas trees and decorations are whimsical and beautiful, and you can even go snowshoeing on the property. In the summer, you can enjoy the gardens and listen to live music on the lawn. Here are a few fun facts about Glensheen:

  • Glensheen was built from 1905-1909
  • The mansion has 39 rooms, 10 bathrooms and 15 fireplaces
  • It’s 32,000 sq. feet
  • It cost $855K to build, which is roughly $24M today

If there’s only one point to make about the Congdon family, it’s that they weren’t just a wealthy family, they were brilliant, creative, kind and so far ahead of their time in terms of their ideas and accomplishments. Plan to spend at least 90 minutes taking the tour of the house and walking around the property.

Duluth

3. Walk Around Canal Park

Canal Park is definitely where you’ll find a lot of energy in Duluth. There are a ton of shops and restaurants, plus a brewery and distillery. You’ll also find the iconic lighthouse and lift bridge and can enjoy walking around the harbor or skipping rocks into the lake. This part of Duluth definitely feels a little touristy, but it’s still a fun spot to check out!

Duluth

4. Explore the Great Outdoors

Duluth and the surrounding areas are known for incredible hikes, all of varying lengths and difficulty. I like to use the All Trails app while planning my hikes to see the distance and difficulty of each trail. You can also check out the Visit Duluth site for more information on hikes in the area. Some of my favorites are Chester Creek, Condgon Trail, and the Hartley Nature Center.

If you visit during the summer or fall, check out  Enger Park Golf Course , which is a public course. It has incredible views of the lake from a high vantage point. And if you’re visiting during winter, head over to Spirit Mountain to ski and snowboard.

Duluth

5. Get on the Water with Vista Fleet

I’ve been able to take two Vista Fleet cruises in Duluth, once down the St. Louis River and another time into Lake Superior. These cruises offer tours with varying duration and topics, and some offer just drinks for purchase, while others include full meals. The tour guides always provide tons of history and interesting facts about Duluth. This is a really fun and relaxing way to see Duluth and learn about its history.

6. Visit a Brewery, Cidery or Distillery

Duluth

7. Spend Time Shopping

Duluth has a lot of really great shops! There are a bunch in Canal Park, on Superior Street in downtown Duluth and a handful more inside Fitger’s. Some of my favorites are Northwoods, Duluth Trading Co. and Free Air Life Co. You’ll also want to stop by the Lake Superior Art Glass shop where you can purchase handblown glass, and even make your own items to bring home! If you don’t plan to make or buy anything, it’s still a fun place to visit and watch other people work on their creations. This store is easy to spot because there is usually a large crowd gathered around.

Duluth

8. Enjoy Duluth’s Fantastic Food Scene

There are so many places to eat in Duluth, and so many of them have great views of Lake Superior. The Duluth Grill definitely has the best breakfast but be prepared for long wait times on the weekends.  Va Bene Caffe has the best Italian food, Pickwick is known to be a great bar food, Vitta Pizza has excellent Neapolitan wood-fired pizza, and Northern Waters Smokehaus has awesome smoked salmon, pork sandwiches and more goodies that are great for a grab and go option.

Duluth

9. Get Your Sweet Tooth Fix

If you’re looking for quality chocolate, stop by Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Canal Park. You’ll find chocolate covered apples, fudge, truffles and more. This tiny store is often very busy! Another popular spot is the Portland Malt Shop . Be prepared for long lines in the warm summer months. Also, be sure to plan ahead because they are only open April through October.

Duluth

10. Drive Across the Lift Bridge to Park Point Beach

Park Point Beach is one of my absolute favorite places in Duluth because it reminds me of the Long Island beaches I grew up visiting. Unlike most beaches on the North Shore, this beach has sand and even sand dunes! When we visited the waves were crashing and the sun was out. And the best part, is that this beach is entirely free and open to the public. I highly suggest you bring a good book, a comfortable chair and cooler and spend several hours enjoying this great beach.

Duluth

11. Walk Along the Lakewalk

The Lakewalk was badly destroyed a few years ago when several severe storms tore it apart. Now, it’s freshly paved and is a busy spot for runners and bikers. The Lakewalk is 7.5 miles long and allows for several opportunities to get close to the water. One time we grabbed take out and sat on a bench in the sun just a few feet from the lake.

Duluth

12. Stop and Smell the Roses at Leif Erickson Park

The Leif Erickson Park and rose garden are a stunning spot in Duluth. Sitting high up on the northern side of Duluth, this park has an incredible bird’s eye view of Lake Superior. You can literally stop and smell the giant roses here, or sit on a bench and soak up the sun.

Duluth

13. Drive to the Best Lookout Point

Another spot in Duluth for a great view is Enger Tower. You can drive right up to this lookout point, no hike necessary. Climb the tower for an awesome view, or walk across the parking lot to the covered patio and peer over the steep ledge.

North Shore

14. Take a Day Trip to the North Shore’s Best Spots

While I love spending time in Duluth, I also love how easy it is to get to some of my favorite North Shore locations from Duluth. Many of them are within a one-hour drive including Black Beach, Tettegouche State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Gooseberry Falls State Park, Palisade Head, and Betty’s Pies. Venture north for a day trip, then head back to Duluth for the night. For more North Shore inspiration, check out my post on the 9 epic State Parks along the North Shore and the 20 must-see places along the North Shore .

Duluth

Duluth Has So Much to Offer

Duluth is an incredible place with such beauty during any season. From skiing and snowboarding to shopping, sipping cider and swimming in Lake Superior there’s really no bad time to go to Duluth.

If you haven’t been to Duluth before, you should definitely plan your trip right away! Looking for more inspiration? Check out my post on visiting Duluth in the winter , and my post on Grand Marais !

Duluth, MN Weekend Getaway to the North Shore

FM22-Post-Default-w/SideBar

Sweet lake breezes, chirping seagulls and the smell of fresh cinnamon-roasted nuts and popcorn for sale along the boardwalk may bring memories of a seaside getaway. But for this getaway, be sure to head north. Just a few hours north of the Twin Cities and on the edge of the North Shore , Duluth, MN provides a weekend getaway for just about any desire. Hike or sail by day, shop and dine in the evening or take a fishing excursion or historic tour. Duluth has near endless opportunities to fill a weekend away.

Things to Do

Where to eat, where to stay, getting there.

Seaside Town in the Center of the Country

Duluth is named for an early fur trapper who came to the area to make peace with the Ojibwe and Sioux tribes, in hopes of establishing a trading relationship. It wasn’t long before business was booming in the port town. In the late 19th century, the city was the only U.S. port with access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and by 1869 it was the fastest growing city in the country.

A stock market crisis caused the majority of the city’s residents to leave, but when financier Jay Cooke, for whom the nearby state park is named, convinced the railroad to connect St. Paul to Duluth, the town again became a central focus for business. By the end of the 19th century, Duluth had more millionaires per capita than any city in the world. It was also the leading port city in the United States, surpassing even Chicago and New York.

The city thrived in the early 20th century, shipping grain, high-grade iron ore and timber. In the 1950s though, high-grade ore was replaced by low-grade taconite, and ore shipments declined. By the 1970s, the American steel industry was challenged by foreign competition, leading to the closure of several plants in the city, along with related industries like cement and shipbuilding. It was the decline of the city’s industry that led some to say Duluth was “where the Rust Belt began.”

Since that time, the city has revived and focused on arts and tourism, opening the Canal Park district with hotels, shops, restaurants and galleries, today attracting more than 3.5 million visitors a year.

Duluth, MN Best Bets

  • Book a room at the historic Olcott House Bed & Breakfast , or overlooking Lake Superior at historic Fitger’s Inn . Enjoy shopping and dining just steps from your room in the Fitger’s complex.
  • Shop in Canal Park . Don’t miss Duluth Pack , and several galleries including Sivertson’s and Waters of Superior .
  • Plan a Lake Superior fishing charter. Half or full-day charters are available. August is a prime month for most types of Lake Superior fish.
  • Take private sailing lessons from certified instructors through the Duluth-Superior Sailing Association . Plan a captained or bare boat charter through Sailboats Inc . in nearby Superior.
  • Stop for a beer tasting at Fitger’s Brewhouse for a tasting (try the Big Boat Oatmeal Stout), or order a flight to try them all, including the seasonal varieties.

Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN Canal Park

Plan a day downtown , an active weekend , sailing , or a relaxing weekend getaway.

A Day of Shopping When the weather’s nice, Duluth’s famed Canal Park will be buzzing with activity, as shoppers dot in and out of galleries, gift shops and outfitters, joggers and rollerbladers cross by on the Lake Walk, families pedal by on surrey bikes and children chase the seagulls and toss stones in the Lake. Every half hour the ringing bell warns drivers that the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge will be going up, as fishing vessels and sail boats wait patiently to cross out to sea.

A trip to Duluth wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Canal Park. Canal Park offers quaint shops and is most known for its galleries, featuring works from local and national artists. Along Canal Park Drive, Sivertson Gallery offers Northwoods style art, unique jewelry, handmade soaps and candles. It is one of two Sivertson Galleries on the North Shore; the sister gallery is located in downtown Grand Marais.

Nearby Waters of Superior features hand-crafted housewares, like river rock welcome mats and pottery, glassware and other artwork. Women’s clothing brands include casual wear by San Francisco-based Bryn Walker and LA-based Chalet, and travel and outdoor clothing by Royal Robbins. Other brands include hemp-based clothing by Two Star Dog and resort and casualwear by Nomadic Traders.

Other galleries include The Blue Lake Gallery and Art Dock in the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace, featuring handmade pottery, paintings, glassware, wood craft and other art. While you’re shopping, stop at Northwoods Confections and Gifts for homemade chocolate and candy. Hepzibah’s Sweet Shoppe in the DeWitt marketplace and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory also offer handcrafted sweets. Also in the DeWitt-Seitz building, stop into Northern Waters Somkehaus for fresh smoked fish, fine cheeses, oils and vinegars and picnic supplies. On a sunny day, enjoy fish and cheese in the park as you watch boats sail by.

Another must-stop destination is Duluth Pack, the North Shore’s famed outfitter and clothing store. Named for its rugged leather and canvas backpacks, the store also sells canoes and oars, camping and cooking supplies, gifts like handmade soaps and décor. Clothing brands include Kavu, Marmot, Northface and Patagonia footwear. While you’re there pick up a six pack of Dorothy’s Isle of Pines Root Beer – a classic BWCA root beer with a great story.

Just up the Lake Walk, the Fitger’s complex offers a variety of specialty shops, including Wintergreen Northern Wear, offering outdoor clothing for men and women; Andi’s  Closet women’s clothing and accessories; United Colors of Benetton men’s and women’s clothing; Snow Goose gifts; Trail Fitters outdoor gear; and Fitger’s Wine Cellars, offering local wines and beers, as well as numerous favorites. The Brewhouse Beer Store offers Fitger’s own brews to take home. Stay for a tasting to find your favorite.

After an afternoon of shopping, watch the Lift Bridge or enjoy a walk along Lake Walk. Canal Park also offers carriage rides May-October, with no reservations needed.

Active Duluth Beyond a relaxing day of shopping, Duluth is a prime spot for adventure. Lake Superior is an excellent location for sport fishing for lake trout, salmon and walleye. Several area charter services are available for half and fall-day excursions on the Lake, as well as the St. Louis River. Check the Duluth Charter Fishing Guides Association for a list of experienced captains. In general, fishing is good May through September, with August being a prime month for most types.

The Vista Fleet cruise line offers a three-course sunset dinner Thursdays through Saturdays, Spring through Fall. Check for the summer Champaign cruises, including a five-course dinner and Champaign.

Another way to explore the Lake is via kayak on the Lake Superior Water Trail . The trail begins at the mouth of the St. Louis River in Duluth, and once completed it will extend around the entire Lake. Completed segments offer carry-in and water access, kayak campsites, parking and rest areas along the lake. Look for kayak guides or rentals at local outfitters.

Guide services, such as Outdoor edVentures, offer not only kayak tours, but other adventure sports like dogsledding, rock and ice climbing, and canoeing. Learning centers like Wolf Ridge also offer tours and instruction geared for families.

In the winter, nearby Spirit Mountain offers 22 runs, 22km of cross-country ski trails, and a year-round alpine coaster. Beyond Spirit Mountain, there are 10 cross-country ski trails within Duluth, and numerous others up and down the North Shore.  The Duluth Cross Country Ski Club , duluthxc.com, offers a list of trails and downloadable trail maps. Ski rentals are available at ski centers such as Sprit Mountain and Snowflake Nordic Center, and at several outfitters and resorts. In addition to skiing, Duluth also offers miles of snowmobile trails, including the Munger and 153-mile North Shore Snowmobile Trail, and managed snowshoe trails. Many outfitters, ski areas and resorts, such as Beacon Point, rent snowshoes.

Great Sailing on the Great Lake Standing on the Lake Superior shore, it’s easy to forget you’re not at the ocean. Containing 10 percent of the world’s fresh water, the Lake is large. Though it has a reputation for offering formidable sailing conditions and cold water – averaging 40 degrees – its breathtaking scenery and cool breezes keep sailors coming back.

Whether you’re an experienced sailor, novice or never set foot on a sailboat, Duluth has options for sailors of all levels of experience. Duluth-Superior Sailing Association and Sailboats Inc. in nearby Superior, Wis., are two places to go for sailing lessons. Lessons involve both classroom and on-water training, and Duluth-Superior Sailing Association also offers advanced/race training. Sailboats Inc. also offers captained and bare boat charters.

Before heading out, talk to an experienced sailor or instructor, or check out a guide to the lake, such as Bonnie Dahl’s Superior Way , known as a Lake Superior sailing “bible.”

A popular destination on the Lake is the Apostle Islands to the east. The chain’s largest island, Madeline, offers a quaint getaway and is a popular sailing destination. Or enjoy the tree-lined North Shore as you sail north.

More to Do in Duluth After the adventure, relax at a Duluth spa. On the Canal Salon & Day Spa in Canal Park and Shear Katz Salon & Day Spa in the Fitger’s complex.

For an evening out, The Duluth Playhouse features local and professional artists performing such hits as White Christmas, Chicago and Fiddler on the Roof, as well as new musicals and plays. At the Renegade Theatre Company performers offer a full mainstage theatre season, plus children’s performances and improve. In addition to theatre, Duluth is also home to a symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra and opera company.

Several museums offer an afternoon of activity and learning, including the Great Lakes Aquarium highlighting ecosystems of the Great Lakes, and the modest Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center where visitors can monitor shipping traffic as ships approach and depart the canal. The S.S. William A. Irvin Ore Boat is open for tours May through October. Glensheen , a 39-room 39-room Jacobean Revival mansion built in 1908, is open for tours year round, with special holiday tours in December.

For a great view of the Lake and Lift Bridge, visit Enger Tower Park in the middle of town. The park is named for a successful Norwegian immigrant, and is centered by a garden and stone tower overlooking the harbor. The park was dedicated in 1939 by the Crown Prince and Princess of Norway, and now includes a Japanese peace garden.

Or view the scenic North Shore by train. The North Shore Scenic Railroad offers tours between Duluth and Two Harbors daily. Special trips include the Pizza Train, elegant Dinner Train, Murder Mystery Train, beer tastings, fall colors tours , and the Polar Express during the holidays.

Fitger's Brewhouse in Duluth, MN

Duluth has numerous restaurants rivaling metropolitan areas. Its Highway 61 “Culinary Highway” just outside of downtown is quickly becoming known as a destination dining location, offering inventive menus and items from casual lunches to fine dinners.

For steak, try Pickwick , a favorite among Duluthians since 1913. Restaurant 301 in the Sheraton offers an American style menu of steaks, pasta, sandwiches and salads. The recently renovated JJ Astor on the 16th floor of the Radisson offers a classic rotating top floor, with some of the best views in town. The menu offers favorites like pan-seared walleye, pork tenderloin, ribs, meatloaf, steaks and burgers.

Valentini’s in downtown Duluth and Bellisio’s in Canal Park both serve home style Italian. Valentini’s has an extensive menu of Italian classics, while Bellisios offers a wide wine selection.

Lake Avenue Café , also in Canal Park, offers such adventurous dishes as rabbit confit and ox tail lasagna, along with lambchops, pheasant breast and pork tenderloin on veal marrow risotto.

Grandma’s is a Duluth classic for casual burgers, sandwiches and salads. The lines will be long, but worth the wait. Nearby, Little Angie’s Cantina serves Mexican, with an outdoor patio in Canal Park overlooking the Ariel Lift Bridge and Lake.

Another casual favorite is Fitger’s Brewhouse , offering handcrafted beers, burgers and sandwiches, and live entertainment.

For breakfast, try Amazing Grace Bakery Café in Canal Park and Pizza Luce (yes! a popular breakfast and weekend brunch location).

A visit to Duluth wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Takk for Maten , offering the best pies – and a host of Scandinavian dishes – in town.

Fitger's in Duluth, MN

Whether you’re arriving for a romantic weekend, a family getaway or a weekend with friends, Duluth has numerous lodging options.

AG Thompson House offers seven rooms in a 1909 Dutch Colonial house overlooking Lake Superior. The Inn sits on two acres and was designed by Minneapolis architect Edwin Hewitt, who also designed the Minneapolis Club, Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church and other well-known buildings across the state.

Nearby, the Olcott House was named one of the “Most Elegant” bed and breakfasts in the country by Arrington’s Bed & Breakfast Journal , a fitting title for this 1904 Georgian Colonial Revival. The Inn offers five suites in the mansion, plus one in the carriage house, and is located on the east end of Duluth, just five blocks from Lake Superior and the extended Lake Walk.

For a downtown rest, check into Fitger’s . Adjacent to the Lake Walk with rooms overlooking the Lake, Fitger’s offers classic style, with brick walls and classic furniture. The hotel provides easy access to shopping, dining and nightlife in the historic building, or enjoy ice cream at Bridgeman’s overlooking the Lake.

Nearby, Canal Park Lodge offers a modern northwoods feel on the Lake and within Canal Park. Complimentary breakfast includes eggs, omelets, waffles and other hot breakfast items, and onsite pool, fitness center and massage offer relaxation after a day of adventure.

Just outside of downtown and Canal Park, Beacon Pointe offers luxury suite, condo and penthouse rentals with amazing lakeside views. Rooms include kitchenettes or full-size kitchens, LCD TVs with DVD player, and some rooms include wood floors and gas fireplaces. The resort offers an indoor pool and hot tub,  on-site bon fires and smores, a fitness center, message and rentals including kayaks, mountain bikes, snowshoes, and cross country skis.

Duluth, MN Harbor Lighthouse in Winter

Duluth is a beautiful city to visit year round, but is most admired in the fall for the beautiful North Shore fall colors and crisp air. In the summer, the breezes off the lake bring cooler air than other areas of the state. And in the winter, Duluth is an excellent spot for winter sports, including both downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Duluth's Lake Walk - from Canal Park to Fitger's

Duluth is easy to get to on Highway 35, south on Highway 61 from the North Shore , or Highways 2 or 53 from the Iron Range. Duluth also has an international airport, with service from Delta, United and Allegiant airlines, with non-stop service from Minneapolis-St. Paul, Chicago-O’Hare, Las Vegas, Detroit and Orlando-Sanford.

For a more unique arrival, board Travel Dynamics International’s Clelia II , a 100-person cruise ship offering Great Lakes tours, beginning in Niagara Falls and ending in Duluth. The eight-day cruises board in Tornoto and stop at Niagara Falls, Manitoulin Island Ontario, Mackinack Island Michigan, Keweenaw Peninsula Michigan, and Thunder Bay Ontario before ending in Duluth (reverse cruises are also available).

Cruises take place June through September, and music, history, health, photography and technology-themed cruises are available. Guest rooms, which were refurbished in 2009, offer twin/queen convertible beds, marble vanities, teak floors and other amenities. On-site amenities include a restaurant and two lounges, gym, salon, boutique, hot tub and deck space for relaxing.  Reservations include all meals, tours and excursions and open bar.

How to get to Duluth?

If you are looking for the cheapest flights, your best option would be to fly to Minneapolis. From here, you can either take a shuttle or rent a car right at the airport and drive 2.5 hours to Duluth. If wanting to avoid the drive, you can fly directly to the Duluth International Airport. It will likely be slightly more expensive and include a layover.

In order to fully enjoy this Duluth Weekend Getaway, you will need to rent your own car as public transportation and ride share services are not always the most reliable.

When is the best time to Visit?

Duluth weather is craaazy weather. from -50 to hot summer days, you will definitely experience ALL four seasons. (Wellllll summer is sometimes cut way too short). As long as you are prepared, each season brings its own unique experiences and fun.

Summer: Although Lake Superior keeps Duluth nice and cool most of the time, Summer is a great time to swim in the lakes and waterfalls, hike, and adventure.

Fall: Brings BEAUTIFUL fall colors that are oftentimes very short-lived. Peak fall foliage is typically from mid September to Early October.

Winter : is FREEZING, but beautiful. With snow-covered trees (and roads), you will surely feel like you are in a (a freezing cold) snowglobe. If you plan your trip when the temperatures are above 0, you can ski, snowboard, snowshoe, and snow tube. Just make sure you are prepared.

Spring: The snow will take forever to melt, but Spring brings a new beginning to Duluth. Once you are thawed out, you can take a muddy hike and enjoy the (slightly) above-freezing weather.

Where should I stay in Duluth, MN?

There are so many great hotel options in Duluth and cozy cabins to rent the outskirts. If hoping to be next to all the action, I recommend finding a hotel near Canal Park. Pier B Resort is a great luxurious option with a beautiful view of Lake Superior.

If looking to save a bit of money you can stay downtown at Holiday Inn and Suites . AND for the kids (and kids at heart), The Edge is home to a large indoor waterpark and arcade.

Sample 3-Day Duluth, MN Itinerary

As a former local of Duluth, I can confidently say this is the best Duluth weekend trip itinerary out there! Happy exploring!

Day 1 in Duluth

downhill skiing and disc golf and Mont-du-lac resort in Duluth MN

Start your morning off with a delicious farm-to-table breakfast at Duluth Grill. You can’t go wrong with their breakfast bowls or cinnamon roll french toast.

After filling up on a delicious breakfast, head to Mont-du-lac Resort for fun outdoor activities no matter the season. If visiting in the summer you can hang out at Big Kahuna Waterpark or go for a 3-hour float trip down the nearby river (shuttle and tubes included in price). If hoping to stay out of the water, you can mountain bike, play a round of disc golf, or try your hand at some archery.

If visiting Duluth in the winter, you can ski, snowboard, or tube down the slopes of Mont-du-Lac.

If you have any energy left, head to downtown Duluth for a delicious BBQ dinner at OMC Steakhouse. End your night playing board games and sipping on different ciders at Duluth Cider.

Day 2 in Duluth

lake superior shore next to Canal Park Lakewalk

You’re likely going to be exhausted from all the outdoor day 1 activities, so have a quiet morning today with breakfast a the hotel.

After resting up, head into Canal Park for some window shopping and a walk along the Lakewalk . The Lakewalk is an 8-mile paved trail along the shores of Lake Superior. A great place to skip rocks, watch the seagulls, and get some exercise in.

Be sure to hang out by the lighthouse to watch some ships sailing by. If you get hungry grab a bite to eat (and a margarita) o the outside patio of Little Angies or on the rooftop of Grandmas (both located right in Canal Park).

As long as you are visiting in the warmer months, your night will consist of a fun sunset dinner cruise on the Vista Fleet . Your cruise will include a fancy catered dinner and beautiful views of the Duluth skyline!

If it’s a bit too cold for a boat ride (ya know if the lake is full of ice), you can spend the night chowing down at the JJ Astor’s which offers 360 views of Duluth (the restaurant spins!)

Day 3 in Duluth

duluth mn day trip

Day 3 is the ultimate adventure with a trip up the North Shore! Get an early start so you can see the most of what the North Shore has to offer. After leaving Duluth, head north towards Two Harbors with your first stop being Gooseberry Falls . While here, hike the Fifth Falls loop (3 miles) to get the best view of the waterfall and park. After your short hike, head to Split Rock Lighthouse, the Black Sand Beach , and/or Palisade head.

Spend the afternoon exploring Tettegouche State Park. I recommend hiking to High Falls and Two-Step falls for two epic waterfall views. Be sure to pack your swimming suit for a dip if it is hot enough!

Spend your evening in the beautiful town of Lutsen. Take the gondola up the Lutsen mountain for beautiful views. It will be hard to believe you are still in the midwest. Finish your North Shore road trip with dinner at Papa Charlies!

Disclaimer: If visiting in the winter, be sure to check the forecast before making this road trip. The wintery roads in Duluth can be brutal. I would not suggest making the trip if it is snowing/icy. Check out the ideas below for alternatives!

Dinner at Grandma’s Saloon

Grandma’s has a impeccable mix of great food, good vibes and a rustic atmosphere accentuating old school advertising from a few years back. The restaurant’s legacy stemmed from Italian immigrant Rosa Brochi, who opened a boardinghouse back in 1869. Decades later, her grandson decided to honor her legacy by opening a restaurant where the old boardinghouse used to stand.

Guests can have anything from hamburgers, various appetizers, grilled steak kabobs to vegan options like their wild rice burger which was surprisingly good for a plant-based patty. Service was a tad slow but our server was super nice and friendly.

3 Day Weekend Itinerary. What to do in Duluth, MN with kids.

I grew up visiting Minnesota’s North Shore, but it wasn’t until I had kids of my own that I learned to really appreciate just how much there is to enjoy and explore up north. A girlfriend of mine recently asked for advice on things to do in the Duluth area for a 3 day weekend with little kids, so naturally, I thought I’d whip together a blog post with all of my best tips. Below is a basic itinerary for a 3 day family vacation in Duluth. If you want to do as little planning as possible and still maximize your time, this should do the trick!

Before you go

There are a few things to keep in mind that might help you enhance your entire North Shore experience. Here are a few things I recommend looking into before you book your trip.

Choose car-free lodging

While there are so many places to choose from when it comes to staying in Duluth, I personally love staying right in the heart of the city, smack dab in the middle of Canal Park. Our family usually opts for The Canal Park Lodge because of it’s quality breakfast and accommodations as well as it’s central location.

If you are going to be spending your weekend getaway wrangling kids, I think having a hotel that gives you quick and easy access to a variety of things simply by walking out the door of your hotel can make everything so much easier on everyone.

Plus, if you have kids who would love seeing big ships, Canal Park Lodge offers great views that you can see from your room! That’s why, before you book your room, be sure to check the ship schedules. If ships happen to be coming in in the morning or during the day when you plan to be at the hotel, you can enhance your stay by booking a Lakeside room. This way your kids can enjoy the view of the ships and you don’t have to go anywhere!

Check the Ship Schedule

If you decide to stay in the heart of Duluth, near Canal Park, you will also find yourself with great views of any ships that might be passing under The Lift Bridge.

To make sure you are taking full advantage of this experience, you can check the ship schedule ahead of time so that you can plan to get a front-row view of the whole thing!

Wondering if Duluth, MN is worth visiting? Here is a 3 day weekend itinerary you can use to explore the city and see why people go to Duluth!

If you usually check into your hotel around 3 like we do, I have put together a quick list of things you can do that don’t take up too much time but still allow you to feel like you were able to take in a full-day of Duluth sight seeing and explorning.

Take the Lake Walk in Downtown Duluth

The second you check into your hotel, you’ll probably be itching to get out and explore. There is no place to do that than the Lake Walk. While the Lake Walk itself is nearly 8 miles of paved trail, you can easily stroll the area located right outside the hotels and along the piece on Canal Park.

From here you can play on the rocks near the lake, feed the seagulls, check out the local shops, and even enjoy some food truck eats.

Wondering if Duluth, MN is worth visiting? Here is a 3 day weekend itinerary you can use to explore the city and see why people go to Duluth!

Walk the Lift Bridge

If your kids are old enough, taking a quick walk over The Lift Bridge can be a really easy, exciting thing to do. Plus, this gives you the opportunity to walk down both sides of the pier!

Wondering if Duluth, MN is worth visiting? Here is a 3 day weekend itinerary you can use to explore the city and see why people go to Duluth!

Visit Enger Tower and Park

Enger Park has always been somewhere I loved visiting, even when I was a kid. Since our children were little we have told them it was Rapunzel’s Tower. This is a large, stone tower that has stairs you can climb that allow you to enjoy mini observation decks of Enger Park, Duluth and Lake Superior.

Wondering if Duluth, MN is worth visiting? Here is a 3 day weekend itinerary you can use to explore the city and see why people go to Duluth!

Along with the Enger Tower, there are also walking trails and a Japanese Garden to enjoy. In the center of the garden is a large gong that kids can take turns banging.

Grab Dinner in Canal Park

No matter what your food preference, there is something for everyone to enjoy at the restaurants in Canal Park! While there are a crazy amount of restaurants to choose from all within walking distance, here are our top 3 go-tos!

Grandma’s Saloon and Grill is probably one of the most popular places to grab a bite in Duluth and is the ending point for the famous Grandma’s Marathon that is held between Two Harbors and Duluth every year.

Little Angies Cantina is perfect for anyone craving some Mexican foods. Not the best Mexican food I have ever eaten, but the atmosphere is great, and the Beer-Rita is to die for!

Canal Park Brewing Company is probably my favorite as far as good food and craft beer (or wine). You can get a table outside overlooking the lake and if you happen to be staying at The Canal Park Lodge, then you are right within walking distance! (And basically share a parking lot.)

Stop for chocolates at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory

If you are craving a little after-dinner sweet, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is located just near the water’s edge. You can pop in for one of their famous caramel apples and then enjoy a little stroll along the water, or enjoy a bike ride with the whole family!

Assuming that this is your one full day to spend really exploring, I included a full “trip day” plan so you could explore a little bit beyond Duluth.

These are some of our favorite go-to spots as well as must-see places if you are visiting Minnesota’s North Shore.

Enjoy breakfast with a lake view & watch the ships come in

Again, if you are stay at the Canal Park Lodge , they have a great back patio where you can enjoy breakfast and watch the waves lap against the shore while you eat your waffles and sip your locally brewed coffee from the Duluth Coffee Company .

Take the scenic route to Two Harbors

Once you’ve finished your breakfast, you can hop in the car and take a leisurely drive along the scenic route (be sure to look for signs or you might miss it). If you are in a time crunch you can continue your journey on Highway 61, but to maximize your sight seeing, I definitely recommend the scenic route.

Besides taking in gorgeous views of the lake, you’ll also get an additional variety of little stopping points along the journey!

Make a pit stop at Gitchee Gumee Park

If you have antsy little ones, pulling in for a quick stretch break at Gitchee Gumee Park can be a good idea. There is a park, picnic area, and some rocky shoreline for the kids to play and toss rocks while taking in the beauty of Lake Superior.

Have a picnic at Gooseberry Falls

If you love waterfalls and easy hikes with kids, Gooseberry is a perfect stopping point. Here are other North Shore hiking ideas with kids .

The falls can get strong, so make sure to keep and eye on your kids (I went with my friend once and her 4 boys. They took of running in every direction and she was not a fan.)

If you have kids who love to run, taking the staircase down to the lower part of the falls can ensure a safer time while still being able to take in the views of the big falls.

Visit Split Rock Lighthouse

While we haven’t yet visited Split Rock Lighthouse ourselves, (although Tom and I did do the hiking trails), this is one of Minnesota’s North Shore’s top tourist stops and is just a little ways past Gooseberry Falls.

Even if you don’t want to make the trip to the lighthouse, there is still plenty to do and see in the surrounding areas.

Grab pie at Betty’s Pies

If you are ready to stop for lunch or dinner, you can most definitely eat a full meal at the iconic, Betty’s Pies just off Hwy 61. However, Betty’s is my personal go-to after a long day of hiking. I always get the raspberry rhubarb because the crumble on top is *chef’s kiss.*

Wondering if Duluth, MN is worth visiting? Here is a 3 day weekend itinerary you can use to explore the city and see why people go to Duluth!

Stop at Great Lakes Candy Kitchen on your way home

Our kid’s favorite stop (along the scenic route) is always Great Lakes Candy Kitchen. Not only do they have a variety of tasty treats that are made in house, but the entire yard surrounding the kitchen is set up as a mini playland.

Wondering if Duluth, MN is worth visiting? Here is a 3 day weekend itinerary you can use to explore the city and see why people go to Duluth!

Take a morning walk down to the pier

I am a sucker for a morning walk, sipping my coffee while taking in the sounds of the seagulls and the lake. If you haven’t made it out to the end of the pier, going first thing in the morning usually guarantees you a better view since the crowds are minimal.

Visit the William A Irvin Museum and take a tour

While you’re down near the pier, you can pop into the William A. Irvin Museum which is free to the public and has a few fun things for the kids to do. They can steer the helm of a ship and take a peek inside first class, second class and crew states rooms!

There are tributes to the famous Edmond Fitzgerald as well as a glimpse into the inner workings of the big ships.

Chances are you have seen the William A. Irvin docked inside the canal, but you can also book a guided boat tour so that you can see the inside of the ship! Fees are minimal and children under 10 are free with a paying adult!

Check out the Great Lakes Aquarium

If you prefer a more closed-in environment that is sure to capture the kid’s attention, be sure to check out the Great Lakes Aquarium . This is easily within walking distance of the Canal Park area, or you can spring for parking which is only $5.

Enjoy a sandy beach day

Personally, there is no better end to a fun-filled vacation than just chilling out and relaxing on the sandy beach. Am I right?

After you have checked out of your hotel, you can make your way across the lift bridge and down on your left you will find a giant stretch of sandy beach where you can play, relax, have a picnic and soak up a little more vacation time!

9 Day Trips From Duluth, MN for a Quick Getaway

' src=

Are you looking for the best day trips from Duluth, MN? I have the best options for you!

I’ve explored all of these destinations since I live in Minnesota, and I actually grew up in one of the locations, Grand Rapids. Because of my experience in these destinations, I know that they’re all perfect for just a one-day trip!

In this post, I’ll be sharing the best places to travel to from Duluth if you’re looking to take a getaway from this city.

Best Day Trips from Duluth, MN

Below I’ll list some of the best locations that you can visit if you’re looking to take a day trip. They’re all within 3 hours of Duluth and I’ve visited all of them, so I know that they’re easy to get to and explore in one day.

Myself standing at a viewpoint overlooking Oberg Lake in Grand Marais on a day trip from Duluth, MN.

1. Grand Marais

Distance From Duluth: 2 hours

Exploring the North Shore is one of the best ways to spend a day if you’re looking to get out of Duluth, and Grand Marais is the perfect place to do it.

I took a day trip to Grand Marais last fall and we spent quite a bit of it exploring the nearby state parks and hiking trails . Our favorite was White Sky Rock, which is just down the road.

After hiking, we grabbed lunch in town at The Fisherman’s Daughter. Their fish and chips are amazing and I loved their outdoor patio.

If you want other snacks, grab custard at Sydney’s Frozen Custard or the Superior Creamery.

Artists’ Point was the perfect spot to explore after lunch since it’s right in town. There’s a lighthouse and you can walk along the breakwater to get to it. If you want some solitude from the people, head over to the wooded area of the point.

Grand Marais also has lots of local shops to check out, and we always love being able to walk down by the water and enjoy Lake Superior.

A blue paddle board floating through a lake with the paddle on the board.

2. Grand Rapids

Distance From Duluth: 1 hour 30 minutes

My hometown, Grand Rapids , is the perfect distance away from Duluth to take a day trip. Being from Grand Rapids, we always do it the other way around and take a day trip to Duluth, but it’s great both ways.

We’re mostly known for our big body of water, Pokegama Lake. I don’t think there’s ever been a summer day where I’ve driven by the lake and seen it without a boat. It’s the perfect place for boating, swimming, and kayaking.

And in winter, you constantly see people out on the frozen lake ice fishing , and snowmobiling. Pokegama is our favorite way to get to other trails on our snowmobiles.

A hidden gem that I’ll tell you about as a local is the Tioga Mine Pit, which is a really beautiful place to swim, but it is really cold.

There are dozens of places to eat in Grand Rapids as well, but my personal favorite place is Chad’s Meat Wagon, which is a barbeque food truck. I never can pass by without ordering the smoked mac ‘n’ cheese.

Spit Rock Lighthouse as seen from on the shoreline, standing tall on a rock cliff over Lake Superior.

3. Two Harbors

Distance From Duluth: 30 minutes

If you want to stay close to Duluth, then Two Harbors is a great choice because it’s less than an hour’s drive away.

Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse State Parks are just a short drive away from Two Harbors. In these parks, you’ll find endless miles of hiking trails and some pretty epic views.

Also just a short drive further up the shore is Tettegouche State Park, which is home to Minnesota’s tallest waterfall.

I always love making a quick stop at Black Beach . We usually grab lunch from Cove Point Crossings in Beaver Bay and eat lunch at the picnic tables. Then finish off with a trip to Palisade Head!

There are also a few things to do in Two Harbors like seeing the Two Harbors Lighthouse, searching for agates at Agate Bay Beach, and grabbing a drink at Castle Danger Brewery.

Myself straddling an orange mountain bike while on a mountain bike trail in the fall months.

Distance From Duluth: 1 hour 45 minutes

If you love to spend time on the lake or in nature, then you’ll love Crosby.

The number one thing to do in Crosby is to visit Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. You can go mountain biking, kayaking, and hiking here.

Crosby is one of the most popular spots for mountain biking in Minnesota. I was honestly surprised with how great the trails are since we don’t have much for mountains here. We’ve visited quite a few times and always find new trails to explore.

I also love Crosby because of how stunning the lakes are. Most of them are mine pits, so they have a glowing teal color to then. They remind me of the alpine lakes in Washington.

The Stillwater Historic Lift Bridge crossing the St. Croix River seen on day trips from Duluth, MN.

5. Stillwater

Distance From Duluth: 2 hours 30 minutes

We used to live just 30 minutes from Stillwater and it ended up being one of our favorite places to visit on the weekends. We usually visited at least once a month.

It’s located perfectly on the St. Croix River and is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway, or a family escape!

There are tons of date night ideas like taking a private gondola ride and flying in a hot air balloon, or you can grab dinner on the rooftop at Papa’s Rooftop.

My favorite place to eat is The Tilted Tiki because it feels like I’ve been transported to a tropical beach. But there are also lots of other waterfront restaurants to check out.

During the summer, we always sneak away for a kayak down the St. Croix River, and there are also river boat rides offered down the water.

Myself, my boyfriend, and my brother at a Vikings game all wearing Vikings jerseys.

6. Minneapolis

Distance From Duluth: 2 hours 20 minutes

Of course, one of the most common road trips from Duluth, MN is to Minneapolis, since there is so much to do in the Twin Cities.

The best way to enjoy your time in Minneapolis is to head into the Downtown area and wander around since this is where the best things are.

If you’re a sports lover, you might be able to find a game to watch, since US Bank Stadium , Target Field, and Target Center are all close by.

There are also tons of other live entertainment options like going to a concert at First Avenue and watching a show at the Orpheum Theater.

You won’t ever be hungry since there are so many great places to eat. My favorite is the banana bread french toast at Hen House Eatery.

Myself and my family on a hiking trail in the forest while exploring Ely.

My family spent a lot of time when I was growing up for my brother’s hockey. I always thought it was lame, but now that I’ve experienced its full potential, I think it’s one of the best places on this list!

Ely is known for being the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It’s perfectly situated in nature and allows you to escape from the everyday.

If you’re an outdoors lover, you’ll love doing things like mountain biking, snowmobiling, ice fishing, hiking, and canoeing in Ely.

One of the most unique things to do in Ely in winter is to go dog sledding. It’s so cool to see the dogs work and get to ride a sled through the forest.

Ely is also home to the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center where you can learn about and watch wolves and black bears .

Cliffs along the St. Croix River that Tyler is kayaking past near Taylors Falls.

8. Taylors Falls

Located right on the banks of the St. Croix River is the small town of Taylors Falls , which is known for its beautiful state park.

There are tons of hiking trails in Interstate State Park, which stretches between Minnesota and Wisconsin. You can even snowshoe on them in the winter.

I really love the Sandstone Bluffs Trail, which is really short and easy, but gives some amazing views of the river and bluffs.

Wild Mountain Resort is in Taylors Falls and has a pretty great ski resort, and also an outdoor waterpark in the summer months.

On the main street of Taylors Falls, there are a few small restaurants and shops. But the most noteworthy is The Drive-In. Be sure to get a root beer float. They’re made with freshly made root beer!

Tyler and I standing near an overlook of the cliffs at the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior on a Duluth day trip.

9. Bayfield, WI

You’ll cross state borders to get to this great spot in Wisconsin! Bayfield is found right on the northern corner of Wisconsin.

When we visited recently, we checked out the Meyers Beach Sea Cave Trail and loved getting to peek down into the caves. You can also see the Apostle Islands from here.

But if you are able to, rent a sea kayak and make your way along the caves from in the water. Or kayak out to the Apostle Islands themselves!

If you’re visiting during winter, you can actually walk onto the lake as long as the conditions are right and explore the caves on a frozen Lake Superior.

When we tried to see them in winter the lake wasn’t frozen enough, so be sure to double-check before you drive all that way.

Wrap-Up: Duluth Day Trips

Taking a day trip is one of the best ways to explore Minnesota, and because Duluth is in such a central location, it’s a great starting point.

D uluth is a picturesque city on the shore of Lake Superior and is teeming with activities for families, romantic weekends, girlfriend getaways or solo sojourns. Truly, this small city has it all! There are so many reasons for you to visit Duluth, even in the winter !

Read More: Where to Stay in Duluth MN, from the Lakefront to Downtown

1. Canal Park

Canal Park  is an epicenter of action and has a lot of options for dining, sightseeing, and hotel stays . Make sure to save an afternoon to explore several Duluth attractions along the lakeshore.

  • Grandma’s Restaurant is here; this is also where the famous marathon finishes each June.
  • Many lakeside eateries and spots to take in the view
  • Great points to access the Duluth lakewalk and some of the best views in the Midwest

2. Adventure Zone

Great for kids to burn off some steam, this Canal park business has a bunch to do and is conveniently adjacent to Famous Dave’s for easy kid-friendly feeding. Adventure Zone  is fun when you want to be inside.

  • Huge arcade
  • Climbing walls

3. Aerial Lift Bridge

The  aerial lift bridge  is perhaps the most iconic structure in Duluth. You can walk or drive across or just sit in Canal Park and wait for ships to cruise by. There is a mini lift bridge sculpture near the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center where you can take selfies (or just frame up the real thing!)

4. North Shore Drives

The North Shore of Lake Superior is a broad term for the approximately 150-mile shoreline stretching up Highway 61 north to Grand Marais, MN. This is a trip in itself, but visitors to Duluth can enjoy several highlights along the lakeshore.

  • North Shore Scenic Drive  – which is “Old Highway 61” and extends from Duluth to Two Harbors, this is the prettier, albeit slower route.
  • Congdon Overlook – just a few miles out of town with great craggy views
  • Make a reservation and head to the New Scenic Cafe

5. Breweries and Distilleries Abound

You can quench your thirst and get your drink on (responsibly, of course – Duluth does have rideshare services) at one of many area watering holes , including:

  • Canal Park Brewing Company
  • Ursa Minor Brewing Company
  • Vikre Distillery
  • Lake Superior Brewing Co.
  • Hoops Brewing
  • Fitger’s Brewhouse

6. Splash About at Edgewater

This is a somewhat dated hotel, but is a great spot to take the kids. The Edgewater  has a few slides, a small lazy river, activity pools, and both indoor and outdoor hot tubs. Check it out if you’re traveling with the younger set.

7. Lester Park Trails and Playground

Perfect for hot summer days, Lester Park  is a shade-rich park and has playgrounds and lots of trails to while away an afternoon. If you want to swim here, take care, it’s not staffed by lifeguards and has led to several drownings in the past.

8. Duluth Entertainment Convention Center

For a small city, Duluth attracts some big talent. Enjoy musicians, comedians, ballet, and more at this event venue  adjacent to the Duluth harbor. You’ll also see it called “the DECC.”

9. Willard Munger State Trail: Mountain Biking

Its fantastic hilly landscape makes Duluth a perfect location for mountain biking! The Munger trail  is relatively flat but incredibly scenic and stretches about 70 miles. You can also get hooked up with some hilly trails at Spirit Mountain Adventure Park. More on that in a minute.

10. Spirit Mountain Adventure Park

Let’s not just stick to ONE season – Spirit Mountain Recreation Area  is great for snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, and just playing! It’s also open year-round.

  • Scenic chair lift
  • Bounce pillow
  • Timber Twister Alpine Coaster
  • Hiking trails
  • Restaurant and chalet
  • Tons of family fun!

11. The Great Lakes Aquarium

This is my favorite place to visit in Duluth, whether I’m there as an adult traveler or visiting with my kids. The exhibits are fresh and fun. Many are interactive. You can spend a whole day at the aquarium  easily.

  • Freshwater fishes, otters, ravens and skunks!
  • Saltwater fishes and jellies
  • Shipwreck displays
  • Scuba diving exhibits
  • Children’s play area
  • Informative and interactive exhibits and presentations
  • Touch tanks

12. The Lakewalk

Feel like walking miles of lakeshore? You can. The Lakewalk  is a popular place to bring dogs, kids, bikes, and folks of all ages and abilities. This accessible trail is boardwalk when you’re near Canal Park; other spots are merely paved. All of the trail boasts great views from the shore of Lake Superior!

13. Glensheen Mansion – Historic Congdon Estate

Get fancy at Glensheen Mansion , especially at the holidays. The historic estate is both interesting and grand, so book a time to experience opulence from days of yore.

14. University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota – Duluth is home to the Bulldogs hockey team and a beautiful campus. The neat thing about the campus for the public is the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium. The planetarium hosts public shows and events  regularly. Some are specifically for kids!

15. SS William A. Irvin

This gigantic ship spent four decades carrying iron ore and coal across Lake Superior. The William A. Irvin  remains in fabulous condition today and is open for public tours. Don’t miss the spooky season with special haunted tours.

16. Vista Fleet Cruise

The best way to see any of the Great Lakes is to get on a boat  and onto the water! You’ll get a whole new perspective. Vista Flee Cruises offers:

  • Dinner cruises
  • Sightseeing cruises
  • Duluth waterfront cruise
  • Family cruises
  • Sips on Superior booze cruise

17. Enger Park and Enger Tower

Want a great view without the crowds? Climb this stone tower (while channeling your inner Rapunzel) and enjoy a beautiful vista of Duluth reaching down toward Lake Superior. This is one of the best things to do in Duluth with kids. You must be able to climb stairs in order to get up to the top of Enger Tower , but the stairs are generously sized and enclosed, so not scary. Sometimes a coffee and ice cream food truck hangs out by the parking lot so you can reward yourself with a treat for having done the climb!.

18. Duluth Rose Garden

Late August into early fall is when the roses are in bloom. The rose garden  is on the waterfront and has easy, flat paths to enjoy. Parking here can be a bear but the views are worth it.

19. North Shore Scenic Railroad

The North Shore Scenic Railroad  is a historic railroad that travels between Duluth and Two Harbors through 28 miles of the Lakefront Line. A popular event for the real young kiddos is the Day Out with Thomas event, which comes to town full of activities for families who love trains.

20. Brighton Beach

A local favorite, Brighton Beach  is often less busy than the popular Park Point sandy beach spots in the summer. It’s a rockier shoreline, so depending on whether you are looking for a beach day or beautiful views, you might try this easy pull-out from a north shore drive.

21. Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center

This  free visitor center  in Canal Park is the place to learn about the history of Duluth in relation to the water.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  This is also the place to find public restrooms when you’re exploring the neighborhood.

22. Take a Carriage Ride

One of the top romantic things to do in Duluth is take a carriage ride  in Canal Park. The horse-drawn carriages are a lovely sight on summer days along the lake.

23. Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory

Another personal favorite and a spot where you can avoid some of the downtown Duluth and Canal Park crowds is getting out to a more cliffy area where you’ll find a bird’s eye view. The best time to visit Hawk Ridge  is in the fall during migration (and for superior views of the beautiful fall colors in the forest).

24. Minnesota Point and Park Point

Enjoy a beach day and feel the sand between your toes. Parking here can be a little tough on hot summer days, but once you find a spot to ditch the car, you can walk for miles along the shore! Park Point is great for open sandy beaches, and if you want to continue as far as you can, you’ll arrive at Minnesota Point.

25. Split Rock Lighthouse

This one is actually claimed by the town of Two Harbors, but is absolutely one of the places you should go on a Duluth day trip! The Split Rock Lighthouse  is a neat piece of history important to the port city and those making their way across the sometimes unforgiving Greatest Lake.

26. Shop along Superior Street

Superior Street has a plethora of spots to dine as well as window shop at some of the premier stores known for their Duluth origins. Frost River, Love Creamery, OMC Smokehouse, Hungry Hippie Tacos, Burger Paradox, and the Duluth Children’s Museum are all along this great route.

27. Go Scuba Diving

Because Lake Superior can be unforgiving, there are several shipwrecks dotting her shores, which make fantastic spots to dip down and get your fins wet. You’ll need to be scuba certified and you MAY want to have a dry suit, since the water temperatures in Lake Superior rarely get above 70F (20C).

28. Duluth Children’s Museum

Housed in an older building in West Duluth, this kiddo hang-out is pretty cool. There are many differently themed rooms with spots to play. The Duluth Children’s Museum  is definitely geared toward the younger crowd, but families shouldn’t miss this stop.

29. The Lake Superior Zoo

The Lake Superior Zoo  is a family classic, just a few exits from Canal Park on I-35. You can walk the paved and accessible trails for hours, stopping by big cats, farmyard favorites, and nocturnal creatures.

The primate exhibit is so much fun. The indoor education area allows touching and gentle petting of animal ambassadors. You can upgrade your day with more interactive special elements like painting with monkeys.

30. Bayfront Festival Park

One of our favorite spots to let the kids play (both at young ages and as they grow) Bayfront Festival Park  has a wonderful sprawling playground. In addition, it’s right where the party is during the Bayfront Blues Festival and other amazing performers, especially in the warm summer months.

31. Leif Erickson Park

The park is home to Duluth’s Rose Garden and includes a historic amphitheater stage area. If you’re looking for a lovely backdrop for selfies or romantic pics with your favorite person (or pet!) Leif Erickson Park  is a lovely spot to spend a summer afternoon or stop before your fall color tour.

32. NorShor Theatre

From fun modern plays to classic films, this restored historic theater has a great scene. Kinky Boots is a popular musical that can be spotted on a flyer for the NorShor Theater  or, you might opt for Spamalot . So, if you’re a Cyndi Lauper fan and you want to have a great time, here’s your ticket.

33. Lake Superior Railroad Museum

Duluth has a pretty happening train scene! In addition to being able to take a scenic train ride, there is a ton of history to learn about. The museum  is located in downtown Duluth.

34. Visit the Bentleyville “Tour of Lights”

A perfect daytrip to minnesota’s north shore of lake superior.

duluth mn day trip

If you haven’t visited the North Shore of Lake Superior, have you really visited Minnesota? In the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” (it’s actually more than 11,000 but I digress), Lake Superior is the granddaddy of them all.

Just a short drive from the Twin Cities, Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior is a popular daytrip and weekend getaway.

Why is Minnesota’s North Shore worth visiting?

For starters, of the 90,000+ miles of coastline in Minnesota, the rugged coast along the North Shore of Lake Superior is unlike any other. Its diversity includes towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, remote beaches, and quaint towns. If you didn’t know better, you could mistake it for an ocean! But, the reality is it’s the world’s largest freshwater lake.

The city of Duluth is the gateway to the North Shore and the start of the 142 mile North Shore Scenic Drive. This drive begins in Duluth’s Canal Park and extends up to the Canadian border at Grand Portage. The port of Duluth is the end point for the St Lawrence Seaway, bringing in more than 900 ocean-going vessels per year from around the world.

In the distance is a peekaboo view of the dark water of Lake Superior. From the foreground a small river flows out towards the lake. Framing the foreground are bright orange foliage on trees.

Long before these vessels came to Duluth, the Native American Ojibwe people had settled in this area before it was ceded to the United States in the 1800s for mining and industry. Today, the area is rich in Native American culture and history.

Dotted along the North Shore are several Minnesota State Parks, such as Tettegouche, Split Rock, Temperance River, and more. These offer miles of trails for hikers and bikers, including the Superior Hiking Trail (this trail should be on your Minnesota outdoor adventure bucket list !). Why not get your Minnesota State Parks passport during your visit and start collecting your stamps?

Pro Tip: If you love kayaking, check out the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore near Bayfield, Wisconsin where you can paddle through sea caves!

How to Get to Minnesota’s North Shore

A map shows the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul in bottom center. In the upper right hand corner of the map is Duluth, located at the western corner of Lake Superior. On the upper left side of the map is an arrow pointing up towards the Canadian border.

From Minneapolis, it’s a 2-2.5 hour drive to the North Shore of Lake Superior. The drive mostly consists of four lane highway (2 lanes each direction), so during high traffic times your speed may be reduced.

In the summer months, Friday mornings and afternoons as well as Sundays tend to be higher traffic. During the peak of Fall colors, traffic can be higher as people are in search of the best views.

For a day trip, I recommend leaving Minneapolis or St Paul by 8am and on a weekday or Saturday, if possible. If you want to make a weekend out of it, drive further up to the adorable harbor town of Grand Marais . Alternatively, you could turn inland and visit Minnesota’s Iron Range.

Pro Tip: Minnesota is known for its mosquitoes, so come prepared! Here are my best tips to avoid mosquitoes and ticks for hikers !

Where to Stop on a Daytrip to Minnesota’s North Shore

There are so many things to do on Minnesota’s North Shore! How do you decide what to do if you only have one day? Here are my recommendations!

NOTE: Click the map and check the box to access the driving directions.

A wooden boardwalk runs from the foreground center to just right of center, with tall yellow green grass on either side. Overhead are cloudy white skies at Park Point near Duluth in Minnesota.

As you enter Duluth, drive through Canal Park and cross the famous lift bridge. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see it in action! Once you cross the bridge, drive until the road ends at the tiny airport on Park Point. (Seriously, keep going!) At the end of the road there will be several places to park in front of the gates to the airport.

Get out of the car and explore the area on foot! The wooden walkway over the sand dune will lead to a sandy trail and the beach that extends well out into Lake Superior. Listen for the sound of sea planes coming as they often fly right over Park Point for takeoff and landing at the airport! This is a cool place to get a view of the port of Duluth and a glimpse of the North Shore.

Looking up from the parking lot, the corner of Fitger's Brewery towers overhead with a vertical sign with yellow letters. The building is covered in bright red flowers and vines, with fluffy white clouds and blue sky overhead.

When you’re ready to continue exploring the North Shore, head back across the lift bridge and head to Fitger’s . This historic late-1800s era brewery serves an awesome array of their own microbrews alongside delicious pub food. It’s the perfect stop for lunch anytime of year! Their most notable menu items are the wild rice burger and elk burger with beer battered french fries. They’ve got several vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Other great restaurants in the Duluth area include the local and organic food at Duluth Grill and the New Scenic Cafe (temporarily closed due to Covid, so check their website).

Gooseberry Falls State Park

To the left in the distance is a tall waterfall lined on either side with yellow and green pine trees. In the foreground, the water flows over large rocks at Gooseberry Falls State Park along Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior.

As I mentioned, there are many state parks to visit along the North Shore. I recommend stopping at Gooseberry Falls , though, for a day trip for a few reasons. First, it’s beautiful! Hike along the gorge and view the upper, middle and lower falls. Many visitors never see anything beyond these waterfalls, but I recommend following the trail along this gorge down to the shore of Lake Superior.

Split Rock Lighthouse

From the left is a granite rock formation with a peach lighthouse, overlooking the dark water of Lake Superior. In the foreground is a rocky beach and in the distance to the right is a peek at a blue sky through the dark stormy clouds at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park along Lake Superior in Minnesota.

If you have the time, just a few miles further down the road is Split Rock Lighthouse State Park . Walk up to the top of the lighthouse or, if you’re up for it, walk down the more than 150 steps to the shore to get stunning views of the lighthouse from below.

Betty’s Pies

If you’re looking for a sweet treat before you drive back to the Twin Cities, make a stop at Betty’s Pies . Here’s the thing, don’t let the parking lot scare you. It’s always crowded. But, the secret is to get your slice of pie to go! Yep, they have a takeaway menu and a separate window to order from! You can even call ahead! They also have gluten-free options.

Want More of Minnesota’s North Shore?

It’s easy to spend more than a day on Minnesota’s north shore. Spend a night so you can explore more! One of my favorite places to spend a long weekend is the adorable Lake Superior harbor town of Grand Marais .

Wanna add on another hike? Try the 5-mile Carlton Trail at Jay Cooke State Park, which is just south of Duluth.

Enjoy your time exploring all that Minnesota’s North Shore has to offer!
