Head into the Highlands…

As you head towards the Highlands , you’ll see the amazing Forth Railway Bridge , now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s bright red, so you can’t miss it, and it’s a stunning example of Victorian engineering. With its triple cantilever design, it is the biggest one of its kind in Britain and the second-biggest in the world. Our journey continues past Perth, the old capital of Scotland. With a rich and influential history that stretches back over 800 years, it has always been one of the most important political, judicial and commercial centres in Scotland.

As you journey north, you will pass Dunkeld – ‘fort of the Celts’ – the ancient religious centre of Kenneth MacAlpin. Our first stop will be at about 9.30 am in the beautiful, small Highland town of Pitlochry , one of the gateways to the Highlands which lies on the River Tummel. Here you can buy some delicious home baking and get ready to continue deeper into the Highlands.

Through the spectacular Cairngorms…

Then enjoy the stunning scenery as you travel through the spectacular and unique wilderness of the Cairngorms National Park , the largest national park in Scotland. This large mountain range has five of the highest mountains in the UK within its limits. We pass Aviemore, the main town in this area, that is now a centre for outdoor and holiday activities, and then continue north and drive through Inverness – the capital of the Highlands. Perched picturesquely above the river, Inverness Castle dominates the horizon of this thriving city. Then it is on to the famous Loch Ness .

Take a cruise and visit Urquhart Castle or Nessie spot from the shore…

Loch Ness is the largest body of water in Britain by volume; incredibly, all lakes and rivers of England and Wales would fit in it. With these dimensions, it’s not surprising that a monster is believed to live in the depth of the Loch. The famous “Nessie” was first seen by St. Columba in the mid-6th century. But it wasn’t until the 1930s that the mysterious creature came to widespread notice when it was seen again by an American couple. Since then, there have been thousands of sightings, and who knows? Maybe you will be the next to spot it. During our time at Loch Ness, you have a few options. You have the opportunity to visit Urquhart Castle and then join a cruise on Loch Ness (cruise and castle combined: additional £28.00 per person).

See UK’s highest mountain…

We then make our way through the Great Glen towards the Commando Memorial, erected in 1952 and dedicated to the remembrance of the Royal Marine Commandos who trained here during WWII. We stop here for a quick photo opportunity of Ben Nevis , the UK’s highest mountain at 4,413 feet (1,345 metres). Next, we will have a short refreshment stop, where you can purchase coffee, refreshments and perhaps a wee nip of whisky.

Relive the massacre of Glen Coe…

Glen Coe is broodingly beautiful and steeped in history. It is in the centre of an extinct volcano that exploded millions of years ago, leaving the rocky mountainous place we see today. As you stand at the mouth of the glen, you’ll feel the past come to life as our guide tells you about the terrible massacre of Glen Coe. You’ll learn the parts clans Campbell and MacDonald played in this brutal part of Scottish history. The other side of Glen Coe is Rannoch Moor , one of the last great wildernesses – 50 square miles of peat bog and marsh, and a site of special scientific interest. It is also where part of the James Bond film ‘Skyfall’ was filmed.

Salute William Wallace and head home…

The route home takes you past the beautiful city of Stirling and its stunning castle, which is one of the most important castles, both historically and architecturally, in Scotland. Several Scottish kings and queens have been crowned at Stirling, including Mary Queen of Scots. Not far away from here, William Wallace had one of his greatest triumphs at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297. You’ll catch a glimpse of the Wallace Monument as we pass by Stirling. His exploits were dramatised in the award-winning film ‘Braveheart,’ starring Mel-Gibson. We’ll continue to Edinburgh arriving back at 8.30 pm approximately.

On 26th December & 1st January there will be no cruise or castle visit available. On these dates we recommend you bring a picnic with you as there will be limited options for food.

Please note on some dates this tour will operate in reverse.

The best tour I’ve taken. The tour guide (Robert) was excellent. He made sure we saw as much as possible. He was clearly very knowledgeable about Scotland. Plus the views were incredible. 100% recommended.

On our Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh we travel via Glasgow to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. We’ll make our first stop at the charming village of Luss which sits on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Sparkling lochs, tumbling waterfalls and majestic Munros takes us to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe. We’ll stop at Scotland’s most famous glen and hear about the infamous Glencoe Massacre of 1692, when the MacDonald’s were slaughtered by the Campbells.

At Glenfinnan we’ll climb up to the viewpoint for stunning views of Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel. You’ll see the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct curve through the glen as the route to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.

We’ll get off the beaten track for views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail before travelling over the bridge to the Isle of Skye.

Your friendly driver-guide has the flexibility to ensure you see the best of the island whatever the weather. Skye never disappoints – there is just so much to see.

You can’t miss Skye’s Mountain range, the Black Cuillins, which adorn calendars and paintings the world over. The sparkling crystal-clear waters of the Fairy Pools lie at the foot of the Cuillins and make for great photos, or even a spot of wild swimming!

We’ll have time to explore Portee and enjoy some lunch before we head to the Trotternish Peninsula. The awe-inspiring scenery never seems to stop, and we’ll get spectacular views at the Quiraing, Mealt Falls and Kilt Rock before we reach the famous landscape of the Old Man of Storr.

We cross the Skye Bridge on to the mainland and Eilean Donan Castle*. The castle sits on an island at a point where three great sea lochs meet, surrounded by majestic highland scenery. Eilean Donan was used in many films including Highlander and James Bond epic, The World is Not Enough.

The village of Fort Augustus lies at the southern end of Loch Ness and is lunch stop. You can enjoy an optional cruise on Loch Ness or take a stroll along the Caledonian Canal.

Our journey continues through the Cairngorms National Park, passing Blair Castle to Pitlochry for our final refreshment stop of the day. We return to Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh via the Queensferry crossing ending our 3-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh.

My friends and I recently went on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, and Loch Ness 3-day tour from Edinburgh, and it was the highlight of our vacation! Our tour guide, John Black, was quite the character. Throughout the whole trip, he was super cheery and always cracking jokes. His personal anecdotes, vast knowledge, and captivating story-telling provided us with a unique glimpse into the Scottish people, culture, and history. John was extremely accommodating for everyone on the tour, making frequent stops for bathroom breaks and food throughout the day. The bus itself was very comfortable, with AC and plenty of space for everyone, and had great views no matter where one sat. Our accommodation was booked through Discover Scotland as well, at Winklebeech bnb in Kyleakin. It had a quaint and homey vibe, and the owner was super welcoming. She was also extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and even offered us some bug spray after seeing all of our midge bites! The rooms were tidy and comfortable, with all the necessities one may need. We managed to hit all the destinations on the tour, and it ran very smoothly with no delays. We were especially in awe with the Isle of Skye- It’s a must-see for everyone who visits Scotland! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Discover Scotland Tours and would visit again in a heartbeat!

We had a wonderful time and it was through this tour that Scotland came alive for us. Our Tour Leader made a point of getting to know each of us. In between the gorgeous countryside and  the historical background Michael provided, he played songs told amusing stories and made it us feel like we were all part of one family. There were lots of stops for the bathroom and food as well. He was patient answering all of our questions and was respectful of the country’s we came from. Mark and I had THE BEST weekend. It’s my first time in Scotland, and although it was a whirlwind, I’m excited to get back and spend more time in certain places. Accommodation was great, Garry was FANTASTIC. So warm and bubbly and knowledgeable and fun.  We’re both quite introverted and I was overwhelmed and missing my children and we never once felt pressured or intruded on, but also Garry made us both feel so seen and included, I was so grateful for how he handled us. Lots of stops, would be good to have a bit more time in some places, but I also really liked ticking lots of things off my list. It was also really relaxing, I slept on the bus all the time – as a parent it was just so lovely to not have to worry about ANYTHING.  Garry added a few fun things in that I wasn’t expecting which was so great! Lots of Harry Potter stops! A DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT! I just loved every minute.  I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you add some northern Scotland tours! Let me know if you do.

Where does the tour stay overnight?

Situated on the east coast of Skye is the fishing village of Kyleakin and this is where we stay for both nights of our tour. During peak season some of our passengers may be allocated accommodation in the villages nearby to Kyleakin.

The village has some restaurants for evening dining and a shop should you require any necessities.

What about my accommodation?

Your tour excludes accommodation. During the tour booking process you will be asked if you are booking your own accommodation or whether you wish us to reserve this on your behalf?

The nearby villages of Breakish or Broadford is fine, however some accommodation providers are situated on roads that even our small coaches cannot get down, so please check with us first at [email protected]

All B&B’s we book on your behalf have private bathroom facilities. Most rooms are en-suite while others have a private bathroom outside the bedroom.

B&B Double/twin room: £120.00 – £150.00 per room per night based on 2 people sharing.

B&B Single occupancy: £105.00 – £130.00 per room per night

Hostel We do not reserve hostel accommodation but we can provide guidance on where passengers may wish to book. There is an option to request information on hostels at the time of booking.

How much luggage can I bring?

This is limited to one piece of luggage (like an airline cabin bag) with a maximum weight of 15kg per person. For guidance, measurements should be no more than 65cm x 45cm x 30cm / 25in x 18in x 12in. You are allowed one small carry-on bag for onboard personal items.

If you require to store luggage while on tour you may choose  to use luggage facilities. You’ll find these in both Glasgow and Edinburgh Train Stations and Edinburgh Bus Station.

Will we be dropped off and picked up at our accommodation?

Yes while on Skye, your Tour Leader will drop you off each evening and collect you at a agreed time each morning.

Above all, please ensure you are ready in plenty of time each morning.

Will I be able to pay by credit card while on tour?

In the Scottish Highlands many businesses do not accept card; particularly in rural areas where mobile signals are not very strong. Your driver will also take cash payment for any optional extras. Therefore, it is best to bring cash with you.

There are cash machines on route should you require to take out money while on tour.

Can I reserve a specific seat on the mini coach?

Seats are chosen on a first come first serve basis, we are unable to take requests for specific seats. Our mini coaches all have panoramic windows so the beautiful Scottish landscape can always be enjoyed, no matter where you sit.

If you suffer from motion sickness, then you may be affected by the roads in Scotland. They can be twisty and narrow. It’s best to come prepared with a travel sickness preventative, whether that be medicinal, wristbands or another option, to ensure it doesn’t impact your overall enjoyment of the tour.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

Known for its spellbinding views and haunting history, Glencoe is one of the most famous regions in Scotland. And once you lay eyes on it yourself, you’ll instantly see why it’s the country’s best-known Highland glen: Glencoe’s natural setting is nothing short of stupendous, dominated by the ridge of Aonach Eagach on one side and flanked by the brooding crags of the Three Sisters on the other.

Technically , Stirling isn’t part of the Scottish Highlands (it’s uniquely positioned where the Lowlands meet the Highlands), but it’s a must-visit stop on the way to destinations like Glencoe and Loch Lomond — and it also makes for a fantastic stand-alone day trip from Edinburgh. 

This city is small in size but big on history: it’s been host to some of Scotland’s most infamous battles during the Jacobite Risings and the Wars of Scottish Independence, including the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Stirling Castle — one of Scotland’s most significant historic sites — is the city’s main draw, along with the National Wallace Monument. This striking 19th-century memorial is dedicated to William Wallace, a Scottish knight and national hero, who became one of the main leaders during the First War of Scottish Independence (and was famously portrayed in the movie Braveheart ).

Round off your day here with a visit to the immersive Battle of Bannockburn Experience or a whisky tasting at the nearby Deanston Distillery.

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: Take a bus tour to the famous Loch Ness!

One of the best ways to meet Scotland hassle-free is to hop on a tour bus. The buses usually departs from Lawnmarket, Edinburgh early in the morning and arrive in the evening.

You have lots of itineraries and various tours to pick from, but the Loch Ness tour was and still is a must if you’re new to the Highlands.

You’ve probably heard about Loch Ness before, haven’t you?

Loch Ness is the home to the famous legend of the sea monster Ness (or my favourite term because she ain’t no monster – Nessie). 

It is located in a cute, very small and picturesque town called Fort Augustus and makes for one of the best and most famous day trips from Edinburgh to the Highlands.

Loch Ness is a large freshwater loch situated southwest of Inverness, which took its name from the River Ness that flows from the northern end.

You can take a boat tour and cross the river while learning all there is to know about Nessie, and even try to spot her for a wee picture.

My absolute favourite… Glencoe. It’s just one of the best day trips from Edinburgh, and one of the most beautiful places in Scotland for anyone who wishes to be at one with nature.

Have you ever been fortunate enough to visit a place and without even knowing it, you feel in absolute peace, comfortable and quiet like there is nothing between you and the serene landscape? 

Well, Glencoe was my heaven on Earth, my own very favourite place in this world. It is a village in western Scotland which lies in Glencoe Valley, in the Scottish Highlands.

This art piece of land is known for its stunning mountains and waterfalls. For the more adventurous ones, you can climb trails such as Buachaille Etive Mor and Bidean nam Bian.

At the village, you will find the Glencoe Folk museum with 18th-century cottages and displays on the local heritage, and the Glencoe massacre of 1692. In this dreamy destination, you will most likely also see red deer and golden eagles.

Tip: If you wish to stay in the nearby area make sure to check out the magnificent Glencoe Inn, it’s a cosy rustic and rather luxurious hotel where you can enjoy a good glass of wine and a warm bath looking at this breathtaking view.

Best Places to Visit near Edinburgh in Winter: Fife

Is it winter and you really feel like escaping the hustle that is Edinburgh during Christmas , or the preparations for Hogmanay?

Then a visit to Fife is perfect for you – it is quite literally on the outskirts of Edinburgh and can be a super vibrant destination to visit. They have plenty of activities for you to be entertained, for starters.

You can book a distillery tour and then, with a good pair of walking boots, come and enjoy the scenic walk to wake up those muscles of yours. You will feel quite warm afterwards.

You can enjoy the parks and coastal areas in Fife if you’re not into that much of an adventure; the views are incredible !

As for you hikers out there, you can go hiking on the Lomond Hills, and take the trails of the forest nearby.

Between golf activities and lots of good food with a stunning white background, you will have plenty to do for a fun day trip from Edinburgh in winter.

Best Day trips from Edinburgh: Glenfinnan Viaduct

Most of us grew up watching and reading the Harry Potter saga, and for me, it always goes back to that magical moment where we can spot wee Harry all excited to go to Hogwarts for the first time.

There is this specific part where you can see the Hogwarts express crossing a beautiful circular viaduct in an enchanting land.

Well, the world-famous spot is nonetheless than Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Smaller than it appears on the screens, but as magical as one could expect!

The Glanfinnan Viaduct is a beautiful place to show your photography skills.

If you go at a certain time of the year, you might even spot the train passing by – make sure to film or take as many pictures as you can before you miss the train!

You have different viewpoints to capture the most stunning pictures, however, one of the most famous ones is closer to the viaduct, where you can see the train above you.

This railway viaduct built between 1897-1901 is located on the west Highland line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire.

Situated at the top of Loch Schiel in the west Scottish Highlands, the viaduct overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and the water of Loch Shiel.

This is one of the most instagrammable places in Scotland, and dare I say, in the whole world due to its role in the famous saga. So don’t forget your wand and marvelous robes; this one is going to be a bumpy ride!

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: North Berwick

One of the best day trips from Edinburgh is to North Berwick, just a short 30-minute ride by train from the Scottish capital.

This picturesque seaside town is a former royal burgh in East Lothian, Scotland, and situated on the South Shore of the Firth of Forth.

There, you will be able to enjoy some walks alongside the sea, maybe surf or paddle in those waves, and why not visit Bass Rock, an iconic bird settlement in the region?

Bass Rock, or simply Bass, is a beautiful island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth, in the east of Scotland, and if you enjoy bird watching, you’ll find it’s a really lovely spot.

In there, and especially if you take a cruise tour, you will spot Puffins, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Gannets. You might also find Eiders, various Gulls, Shags, Cormorants, Fulmars & Grey Seals!

In North Berwick, you will also find many cute coffee shops as well as really local places to eat and shop.

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: Perth

Perth is a lovely city located beside the serene river Tay, the longest river in Scotland, and was once was considered the Scottish capital.

This city still blooms in its former glory with really popular attractions, and totally instagrammable sights.

There is a lot to se, like The Fergusson Gallery, set in a former circular water tower, the Black Watch Museum, and the Perth Museum & Art Gallery.

The Scone Palace and the Stone of Destiny are also wonderful attractions.

For the ones that don’t know, the Scone Stone or Stone of Destiny (Lia Fail in Gaelic) is referred to in England as the Coronation Stone. It’s a block of red sandstone that has been used for centuries in the coronation of monarchs. A must-see.

This less-than-two-hour train ride is a lovely way to explore another one of the most beautiful cities near Edinburgh and spend a really lovely day!

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: Linlithgow

Ah, Linlithgow – the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots! 

In less than half an hour from Waverley, Edinburgh, you can reach Linlithgow, in West Lothian.

This pleasant town is rich in history, since the ruins of the Linlithgow Palace are the birthplace of the only queen Scotland has ever had.

The palace also used to be one of the principal residences of the monarchs back in the 15th and 16th centuries, and is a spot you really can’t miss.

Linlithgowshire offers visitors wonderful events, shopping, beautiful relaxing sights and a vast dining variety for you to pick from.

If you like architecture, pay a visit to the ruins of the Palace, and check out the old port, too. It connects Edinburgh with Falkirk and the Forth Clyde Canal, and dates back to 1822.

You can take a boat trip on the Union Canal at the Linlithgow Canal centre which is also a museum and tea room – and really forget all about the city life!

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: Callander

Oh, Callander, the beautiful gateway to the Highlands. 

Here is something I once heard from one of the tour guides I met in Scotland when visiting Callander.

Scottish people and their humor, am I right?

Callander is a small town in the council area of Stirling, Scotland, and situated on the River Teith. 

The town is located in the historic county of Perthshire and it is considered to be the very gate to the Highlands.

Even though there are no actual gates, you can feel in the air this is really the place that divides the Lowlands and the magnificent Scottish Highlands.

A very small town where you can spot the beautiful mountains on the horizon whilst walking alongside the river. At Callander, you will also see cute swans and ducks, and in the summer, you might even be able to enjoy a picnic there.

This place is a tourist attraction for many people going or coming from the Scottish Highlands.

During the winter months, you will be able to see the frozen mountains as a killer background for your pictures. Just because of that, I believe Callander is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Scotland.

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: The Kelpies

If you’re looking for one of the best spots for your day trips from Edinburgh, make sure to pass by the majestic Kelpies.

The Kelpies are situated in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect sixteen communities in the Falkirk Council Area.

The 30-meter-high horse-head sculptures can be found between Falkirk and Grangemouth, standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal – and they mix street art with rich history.

In Scottish folklore, a Kelpie is angerous shape-shifting water creature that can appear on land as a horse.

It appears to its human victims as a grey or white horse, entices them to ride on their back then carries them down to an underwater grave.

You can visit the Kelpies free of charge at any time of the day throughout the year, since the area has been designed to give access to all, which means everyone can come and see them up close.

The Kelpies are one of the most instagrammable places in Scotland, and personally, I think they are stunning during the night with all the lights and colors coming from the sculptures.

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: Pitlochry

Pitlochry is a town in the Perthshire and Kinross council area of Scotland.

Located close to the river Tummel, Pitlochry is known for the dam and fish ladder, which offers the most incredible views, and if you come at the right time of the year, you’ll witness the opening celebrations of salmon season!

There are plenty of castles turned into hotels in the area, if you’ve ever wanted to live the royal life too – the picture above is actually a hotel!

In Pitlochry, you’ll also check out the Festival theatre; it is considered one of the best venues in Scotland, if not Britain.

One of the most glorious battles in Jacobite history took place at Killiecrankie Gorge, and you can learn more about this place, the battle, the wildlife, and the geology of the area in the Pitlochry visitor center.

Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park

If you have the heart of an adventurous being , and are up for a hiking day away from the capital, then the Trossachs National Park might might very well be one of the best day trips from Edinburgh for you.

The Scottish borders are located in an area to the south and east of Edinburgh, and separate Scotland and England.

This is a particularly close trip from Edinburgh, and shouldn’t take you long before you arrive and are able to get to exploring.

You might think there’s not much to do… and you’d be oh-so-wrong.

Even though it’s a border, it has lots of things to see, such as castles and chapels.

You have the Rosslyn Chapel, located in the village of Roslin in Scotland, to start with. This 15-Century chapel was featured in the famous Da Vinci Code, and is so very instagrammable.

Then, you can continue your way down to Hadrian’s Wall, already located in England.

Hadrian’s Wall is filled with ancient history, since it dates back in 122 AD. It was built as a fortification for the Roman province in Britannia and named after the reigning emperor at the time – Hadrian.

Beautiful places to visit between Scotland and England – you can visit two countries in a matter of a few hours, how crazy is that?

Well, St. Andrews is located in the Kingdom of Fife, and is a small town on Scotland’s east coast, just north of Edinburgh.

The town is famous for many things, including the largest golf complex in Europe!

It’s also known for its stunning seaside walking path, its fishing culture, its ruins and museum… and is home to the oldest university in Scotland.

The University of St. Andrews was built in 1413, and to this day, it is a must-see in town.

Well, of course. Glasgow.

When you’re in Edinburgh, you can also take a one-day trip to its vibrant neighbor Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland.

It is a port city built on the River Clyde, in Scotland’s Western Lowlands, and it’s known for its culture, art, and magnificent venues.

The Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture give a rich heritage to the city, and some of the home institutions include none other than the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland.

Ayrshire is a historic county in southwest Scotland which features lovely sandy shores and blends in the beauty of countryside life.

Located on the shore of the Firth of Clyde, Ayrshire is known to be the birthplace of the famous poet Robert Burns and Robert the Bruce.

There is a lot to do and see if you decide to stick through Ayrshire and Arran.

Along with the poet’s famous attractions, you can learn about the Vikings who travelled through the same shores you’re walking on, for starters.

Is it possible to explore the place on our own or better to book with guides and tours?

We will be taking a train from London and reaching Edinburgh in the evening around 5 …. Will it be safe/ a good idea to explore our neighborhood … we will be staying in old town. Someone suggested it’s not a very safe place to stay on another forum… should I look into changing my booking?

Look at shorter tours from companies such as Timberbush or Rabbies.

Book directly with them not Viator

Where are you staying in Edinburgh? Not sure where you get the idea it is unsafe.

It's a great day out and you don't spend all day on the bus, you get plenty of free time and see so much in just 1 day.

It is the tourist heart of Edinburgh.

Only comment I would make is if you are near Grassmarket or Cowgate, it is a lively area with lots of bars and is the haunt of lots of students, so can be noisy late on.

We will be there in the first week of July and staying in an Airbnb on Lothian Road. Is it in old town? The apartment had excellent reviews and seemed to be in the center of the city. Most of the hotels are either booked or super expensive to book 2 rooms but if recommended…. I look into booking something different.

If not for the glencoe/ highland/ lochness tour…. What would you suggest should we be visiting. So far we have shortlisted these places

Lothian Road is outwith the Old Town and is a main traffic route through the city. Make sure the flat has double glazing!

No issues regarding safety unless you are around when the pubs empty after midnight.

Just bear in mind that all ways are up to the Castle!

Forget Loch Ness, unless you want to sit on a bus for 10 or more hours and not get a lot of time off the bus.

Loch Lomond is a good trip and not that far.

The Castle, a walk down the Royal Mile , admire Holyrood Palace from the outside, walk up Calton Hill for a great view over the city.Perhaps go into St Giles Cathedral.Explore some of the tiny closes and alleys off the Royal Mile which offer some superb architecture too.

The views of the Old Town from , say, The Scottish Cafe's outdoor terrace or Princes Street Gardens is wonderful.What a skyline! Great views too from a window seat in Waterstone's Cafe (bookshop)

Bar Prince(part of the Balmoral hotel ) is lovely for a light lunch in 5 star but very affordable surroundings.Or go the whole hog and do a traditional British Afternoon Tea (one between two people is usually enough!)

For something more down to earth you could also try The White Hart Inn in Grassmarket where Rabbie Burns used to visit - some lines from his poetry are etched on the ceiling beams.Tasty pub grub!

Howie's near Calton Hill is also good for Scottish-focused food.

The Royal Yacht is wonderful, I loved it.

Strolling the New Town is just lovely too, very elegant 18th century buildings.

If you enjoy art/museums then the National Gallery is well worth a visit as is the excellent Museum of Scotland .

Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens are a beautiful, flower-filled space for strolling through...easily reached by bus.

For a Highlands tour choose something that goes to the West...Glencoe or Inveraray, Loch Lomond...for the best scenery.

Lothian Road used to have a bit of a bad rep for being a bit rowdy/noisy because of all the pubs and clubs along it but in recent years, many of worst of them have either closed or relocated to other parts of the city. The local pubs that remain are mostly fine places.

The Loch Ness/Glen Coe tours are about the worst you could take from Edinburgh due to the amount of time spent on a bus, few/short stops and few buses actually stopping in Glen Coe any more. Then when you get to Loch Ness, you will find it is about our dullest/most grossly over-promoted "attraction". The "Highlands" element of these tours is essentially a complete misrepresentation to lure you-in. There are plenty of better choices for this.

All the West Highland Lochs and Glens/Castles-type tours (several operators) offer you a lot more of our best, for less time on a bus and with more/longer stops to appreciate it. Also there are tours to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs or the Trossachs and Highland Perthshire - a lot of very fine Highland country.
