Rotten Tomatoes® Score

As far as Elvis Presley concert films go, Elvis on Tour is a film for Presley completists but that's about it as the King heads into the final years of his life.

The filmmaking was energetic and visually interesting to look at. Presley's performance was not.

Consummate showmanship...evidence of a huge pop idol and savvy showman with a finely tuned stage act. [Blu-ray]

He's still a dynamic performer but you can already see that he's packing on weight... and at times he seems to be simply falling into familiar rhythms.

The documentary is not all that original, inventive, or creative, and the singing is mostly routine.

They are nights to remember, paced here with more than 25 numbers that embrace the rocker Elvis, the gospel Elvis, the ballad Elvis, even the kung-fu Elvis. In between tour stops come more moments to treasure--montage sequences (supervised by Martin Scorsese) showcasing Presley's early career and movies. More!

After the solid success of Elvis: That's the Way It Is , and with his career as a movie actor having reached a standstill, Elvis Presley undertook a second concert documentary. Elvis on Tour trails after the King on a few concert dates in 1972, as he powers through a curious set list that downplays the classic hits in favor of the likes of "Polk Salad Annie" and "Proud Mary." Rehearsal footage, preshow jitters, and after-hours sessions singing gospel with the gang are included; most revealing is a sequence that follows Elvis off stage and into his waiting limo, where he towels off in exhaustion, cracks a few jokes, and listens to the praise of the entourage. These glimpses are a logical counterpoint to the concert material; less explicable is the rundown of Elvis's early years, which hardly fits the subject at hand--and frankly reminds us that Elvis looks pale and just a bit puffy at this moment in his life. The fun stuff includes a workout on the still-new "Burning Love" (Elvis has to read from a lyric sheet), committed takes on "Bridge over Troubled Water" and "I Got a Woman," and a spirited "Never Been to Spain," a song that fits Elvis's taste for simple, dramatic builds. That, and Elvis giving a stage introduction to "the guy that gives me my water and my scarves and so forth." The movie's structure feels a little random, not that that will matter to fans. At times it catches the King looking undeniably weary of it all, except in those moments when a song really catches him (certainly during the gospel moments) and you see just how utterly "in the music" he was. The split-screen approach is intact, and the film's "montage supervisor" was a young fellow named Martin Scorsese. Note about this 2010 edition: The original song that played under the opening credits, a cover of "Johnny B. Goode," has been replaced (apparently due to rights issues) with a live "Don't Be Cruel." --Robert Horton

Also included are portions of a forty minute interview that Elvis gave about his life and career before filming began. Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker , was unhappy with the inclusion of a scene which mocked Elvis' acting career by showing screen kisses taken from a number of his previous films. According to the producers, it was a tongue-in-cheek dig at the repetitiveness of these films by changing the background 'but the plot stays the same'. Elvis on Tour won the 1972 Golden Globe Award for Best Documentary, making it the only Elvis film to win an award of any kind.

There was no soundtrack album released to accompany the movie. However more recently some rehearsals and a complete show have been released by BMG.

Also an album has been released with the fsamous working title, Standing Room Only and present the Las Vegas masters from February of 1972 and the masters and outtakes from the March 1972 sessions at RCA.

At the Met Gala on Monday night, Baz Luhrmann teased that he may not be quite done with Elvis Presley-related projects, following his 2022 Austin Butler -starring film.

That’s The Way It Is was a documentary following Elvis Presley’s Summer Festival in Las Vegas during August 1970 (released alongside his 12th album of the same name) and Elvis on Tour was a 1972 documentary tracking the star while on a 15-city tour.

The director had previously also said he would release an extended cut of Elvis with more of Butler’s performances, telling IndieWire during the film’s awards run, “There’s a whole lot of material that adds up to four hours, but I have gone on record now to say not today, not tomorrow, but at some point I would do [it]. Because Austin did his concerts full out. He did all the numbers. Austin just did it and it was an out of body experience to watch him do those full concerts, so one day I will cut those full concerts together.”

There has not been an update on that four-hour cut since; Elvis was nominated for eight Oscars at the 2023 ceremony, including best picture and a best actor nod for Butler.

Elvis Presley remains an incredibly popular musician, even decades after his death. The singer-songwriter’s brand enjoyed a boost a few years ago thanks to his highly-anticipated biopic, Elvis , which ended up becoming a critical and commercial success. Now, the man behind that project may be looking to stay in the business of the king.

At the Met Gala on Monday (May 6), director Baz Luhrmann spoke to the Hollywood Reporter , and he revealed some very good news for those who love Presley. “The fans really want to know if all that footage we found in the vaults is going to become a concert film,” he stated in a short interview. The celebrated filmmaker then added, tantalizingly, “I’m here to say I think it’s gonna happen.”

Rumors that Luhrmann was working on a second Presley movie of some kind began late last year after the director took to Instagram to share that he’d uncovered plenty of great archival material. He wrote that he and his team had “found reels and reels of never-before-seen footage of Elvis on Tour and That’s The Way It Is .”

Both Elvis on Tour and That’s The Way It Is are previously-released documentaries focused on Presley. The two were originally shared in the ‘70s, but according to Luhrmann, fans didn’t get to see everything that was filmed, and there may be plenty more that’s worth watching.

For the moment, there are no concrete details regarding any new Presley projects. Luhrmann’s reveal may mean that he is getting ready to announce something definitive soon…or there’s a good chance that fans will have to wait months, or possibly even years before they get to watch a new–or even an updated–film.

Luhrmann’s Presley biopic Elvis was a huge hit after it was released in mid-2022. The movie went on to gross just under $300 million globally off of a production budget of $85 million. It earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. The title didn’t win any gold that evening, losing the top prize to Everything Everywhere All At Once .

A new Presley concert film would be a surefire win for whichever streaming platform picked it up–and it would likely cost a very pretty penny after what may be a bidding war for the project. Luhrmann and the late singer’s estate could also choose to release the as-yet-unofficial movie in theaters, where it could bring in millions in box office revenue.
