Prepare for Some Quality ‘Lax with Emma Russack’s Album Tour
News | June 15, 2016
Emma Russack has announced she’ll be hitting the road to bring her relaxed brand of indie-pop to the masses in support of her third studio album ‘In a New State’.
Russack has been killing it internationally with the release of ‘In a New State’ on June 10 garnering the praise of Rolling Stone, UNCUT, Vice, and many more.
Singles from the album If You Could See Me Now and My Own Friend are both terrific examples of an artist completely laying their heart down on a track. Brooding guitar and drums lay the groundwork as Russack sings of her independence and freedom, serenading with a voice that sounds out of place for the subject matter in the best possible way.
Think a slow song from Courtney Barnett but with the vocals sounding closer to the dreamy lustre of Beach House.
Wollongong, Melbourne and Sydney are currently on the cards for the upcoming headlining tour, but there’ll be plenty more dates announced.
These dates aren’t the only chance to see Russack in the flesh, and not the earliest either, as she’s supporting Alex Gow and Dan Kelly on their Australian Dreamers tour.
Since touring her sophomore album ‘You Changed Me’ in 2014, Russack has left Perth, moved to Melbourne, and spent enough time there to become mates with psych-legends King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard (who helped on producing duties alongside John Lee of The Ocean Party).
All these changes are reflected in the new material from Russack which paints “memories of me floating on my back in the ocean at Cottesloe, Perth, and feeling free.Walking through Melbourne CBD and realising how I finally feel at home”.
To get a taste of what you can expect when Emma Russack comes to a town near you, give this a listen!

Emma Russack “winter blues” out now!
Prolific singer-songwriter Emma Russack has just releases her stunning fifth album ‘Winter Blues’. Over the weekend Emma opened for Robert Forster in Sydney and Wollongong and has headline shows next month in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra.
The 10-track album is Emma’s most personal to date. Russack explains, “thematically, the songs deal with love, loss and confusion in the context of a fairly confusing, complex world. The songs pose many questions but refuse to give answers, and that’s the way I like it. That is not to say that the songs aren’t hopeful; they are – but it is my hope that the listener can engage with the songs freely, answering (or not answering) the questions for themselves in relation to their own lives and experiences”. The four-and-a-half-minute single title track is the album’s centrepiece. Remarkably subtle and incredibly beautiful, the song floats in a sombre key, intermittently dotted by Russack’s contemplations, “blame it on the winter blues”. Russack gave us a taste of the album in the single “ What Is Love ” late in 2018. Recorded for the short film ‘ An Athlete Wrestling a Python’ , Emma writes about the simplicities of love, asking “What Is Love?”. During the song she asks, “is it borrowing a t-shirt?” OR is it “reading over shoulders?”. It is many things! In addition to the song’s deeply personal lyrical content, it also sees the piano take the lead – as it does too on the title track. The piano is also showcased on the album’s quieter moments: “ Like the Wind ”, “ Horses ” and the album’s stunning finale “ Never Before ”. A few songs into ‘Winter Blues’ and you are struck by its beauty and left aching for more. Is it the content, the songs, or the subject matter that you are longing for? Whatever it is, the album feels a little different. The songs were captured in a different way this time. Russack explains, “for a year, Liam Halliwell , Dylan Young and myself had been going into Phaedra Studios intermittently to record songs that I had written. We would usually record two songs per session and then mix on the same day. All of the songs were recorded live to tape and always in one take. There were no rehearsals and Liam and Dylan would have to learn the songs in the minutes prior to recording them. It was a fast and exciting process. Once again, John Lee engineered, mixed and mastered the album.” In the time between 2017’s ‘Permanent Vacation’ and 2019’s ‘Winter Blues’ , Russack has recorded two albums with Lachlan Denton ‘When It Ends’ and ‘Keep On Trying’ (released as a double album late last year via Spunk – LISTEN ). The albums showcase a masterful melding of each of the artists’ (and vocalists’) signature sounds and songwriting style. They also captured an incredible friendship that has had its ups and downs over the past year, yet has only grown stronger. Emma has also been travelling, studying and becoming settled in her now long-term hometown of Melbourne in this time. Melbourne is obviously known for its hot summers and at times longer winters, but the title of Russack’s new album might not simply talk about the weather. Emma explains, “Winter Blues is the perfect summary of where I am at in my life: vulnerable, open hearted and at peace with my past”. TOUR DATES: Wed 7 August – The Jazzlab, Melbourne ( tickets ) Fri 9 August – Sideway, Canberra Sat 10 August – Golden Age Cinema & Bar, Sydney
Emma Russack Drops New Album And Tour Dates
Melbourne songwriter Emma Russack has today released her third studio album, In A New State , as well as announcing a three-date tour for the east coast, with more shows to still be announced.
Since the release of her debut album Sounds Of Our City back in 2012, Russack has been stealing the hearts of audiences and critics alike.
With production on the new album done by John Lee (Mountains In The Sky, Beaches and The Ocean Party) and Joey Walker from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, In A New State distances itself from her previous releases and sees Russack take back charge on the guitar.
Russack will finish her supporting duties on Alex Gow and Dan Kelly's tour this month before moving on to her own string of headline shows in July and August, taking place in Wollongong, Melbourne and Sydney.

Emma Russack – new music & tour
Melbourne based singer-songwriter Emma Russack released “Be Real”, the newest single from her upcoming album Winter Blues, due on the 5 July 2019. Channelling 90s grunge and indie rock, “Be Real” is Russack’s reaction to the selfie culture.
“[“Be Real”] is about my frustration with phone obsession, social media, hype and trend – the phoniness that I see all over the place (and actually buy into),” Emma Russack explained. “I’m really trying to emphasise the importance of being true to yourself and being ‘real’ – whatever the hell that means. The video is a snapshot of how insular and isolated people have become as a result of technology. I just wanna connect IRL.”
To celebrate the release of her new album Emma Russack has a bunch of tour dates in the second half of the year.
Wednesday 7 August – The Jazzlab, Melbourne, VIC Friday 9 August – Sideway, Canberra, ACT Saturday 10 August – Golden Age Cinema & Bar, Sydney, NSW Friday 13 September – Major Tom’s, Kyneton, VIC Saturday 14 September – Macedon Railway Hotel, Macedon, VIC Sunday 15 September – The Taproom – Shedshaker Brewing, Castlemaine, VIC

Yet another excellent record discovered via the 1234 program on pimpod.com. An Australian duo presenting a varied mix, with a touch of psychedelia on the opening track and some very fine slabs of alt pop throughout. I hear a strong Go-Betweens influence at different times, particularly on the songs sung by Lachlan. Each vocalist lends their own vibe to the numbers they sing and it all makes for a highly impressive album. Gavin Hellyer
