Caribbean Cruise Shore Excursions

Go ashore, connect with the caribbean.

Best Shore Excursions

Editors Picks, TravelAge West

The Caribbean is full of sights, sounds, tastes, smells and experiences that become a part of who you are. There's no stronger connection to your travels than those made by joining the destination's daily rhythm. Below are just a few Caribbean cruise shore excursions and ways you can connect to the heartbeat of the islands and come back new®.

Swim with stingrays

Swim with hundreds of stingrays in their natural habitat on Grand Cayman. Pods of stingrays, called a fever, come to the island to have and raise their young, and this Caribbean cruise excursion is one you'll never forget as you swim among these gentle creatures.

Snorkeling & diving

Dive into the blue, endless depths of the Scotts Head Marine Reserve bay on the island of Dominica, formed from the caldera of an ancient, now dormant, volcano submerged beneath the Caribbean Sea. Untouched coral reefs, dramatic underwater formations and hundreds of species of marine life await you on this Caribbean cruise excursion which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore ancient ruins

Ancient Mayan ruins scatter the beautiful island of Cozumel, once thought to be the home of the moon goddess Ixchel. On this Caribbean cruise excursion you will explore temples, palaces and more, and feel yourself walking in the footsteps of the ancient peoples who once lived in those very spots.

River tubing

Relax on an inner tube in Belize as the soft current takes you through dense rainforests, ancient caves and nearly-lost Mayan ruins once used to worship many of their gods. Guides teach you the names of the local wildlife, cave structures and ancient ruins as you pass by on this relaxing Caribbean cruise excursion.

Ziplining excursions

Climb thousands of feet in an open-air tram on the island of St. Lucia until you reach the pulse-pounding zipline course. Embark on a journey that spans the rainforest canopy over one hundred feet above the forest floor and highlights the awe-inspiring vistas and unique wildlife of the island.

Scenic cruising excursions

Some of the most beautiful coastline in the world is on the island of St. Kitts, with azure waters, dramatic cliffs, coral reefs and soft white beaches. Once of the best ways to see every last postcard-perfect foot of the island is from the deck of an expertly piloted catamaran, with a stop for some reef snorkeling of course.

Outdoor adventure

Bonaire's arid interior, home to salt-drying flats for hundreds of years, make for the perfect 4x4 terrain. Take your rugged vehicle across the wild interior of the island, and see the most famous sights, mountains of salt, Caribbean flamingos and iguanas living in the mangrove forests.

Historic landmarks

From the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton on St. Kitt's sister island of Nevis to Nelson's Harbor on Antigua that sheltered the mighty British fleet during the Napoleonic Wars, the Caribbean is brimming with history and steeped in stories. Learn the shameful history of the slave trade at the Hato Caves on Curacao or tour the Dutch-inspired classical architecture in the capital of Willemstad.

Jamaica Highlights 7Days/ 6 Nights

I had the immense pleasure of embarking on a 7-day journey to the Bahamas, courtesy of Across Caribbean Excursions. From the moment our adventure began, I was captivated by the sheer beauty and vibrant atmosphere of the islands. The planning and organization were impeccable. Every detail, from the accommodations to the daily itineraries, was thoughtfully curated to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. The staff's professionalism and warmth added a personal touch that made the trip even more special. One of the highlights was the diverse range of activities. Whether it was exploring the lush landscapes, engaging in water sports, or simply relaxing on the pristine beaches, there was something for everyone. The excursions were well-organized, providing a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The cultural experiences were particularly enriching. We got to immerse ourselves in the local Bahamian culture, from the delicious cuisine to the lively music and dance. It was a delight to interact with the friendly locals and learn about their way of life. Above all, the stunning natural beauty of the Bahamas was breathtaking. The crystal-clear waters, exotic marine life, and picturesque sunsets were like scenes from a postcard.

Sailing through the marvellous Caribbean Tour

Sailing through the marvellous Caribbean

I loved this tour. It’s not a luxury cruise, you live aboard the boat and cook together. It’s managed by a German company, being non-German speaking I had no issues, the skipper and other crew members could speak English well. This is the best way to see the remote islands of St Lucia/St Vincent and learn the basics of sailing.

Best Caribbean shore excursions

Melinda Crow

Whether your ideal cruise vacation involves lounging, exploring or learning something new, there's a Caribbean shore excursion designed to help you find your bliss. In a year-round destination like the Caribbean, most of the fun revolves around sun, sand and sea. History, culture and food also top the lists of excursions available in the region.

You may be surprised by how many Caribbean islands have interesting geological features not found anywhere else in the world. Shore excursions offer plenty of adventurous ways to explore these areas, from caves to volcanoes.

In our quest for the best Caribbean shore excursions, our goal was not to find the most popular tours, but to find the experiences and attractions that make a destination stand out. Let's jump in with a look at our favorite tours.

Best Eastern Caribbean shore excursions

Virgin gorda and the baths, tortola.

excursions in caribbean

You'll have the opportunity to visit many gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean, but The Baths is about as unique as they come in terms of pure scenic beauty. The beach features giant boulders and stone formations that create hidden pocket beaches and spots where the sand and water rush in and out. It's part of the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands. To get there, you'll take a 45-minute boat ride from Tortola to nearby Virgin Gorda.

  • 4 1/2 hours, challenging, $$$.

Bioluminescent Kayak Adventure, Puerto Rico

This excursion out of San Juan starts at dusk and finishes well after dark. You'll travel by van to the eastern edge of the island to a beach near a bioluminescent bay. You'll get brief kayaking instructions, life vests and lights before setting off through the mangroves and into a small, sheltered bay. Every stroke of your oars sets off sparks of light in the water as you stir the tiny glowing organisms.

Even with availability limited to cruises that stay in port overnight in San Juan or pre- or post-cruise stays, this excursion made our list because it is simply not something you can do in very many places in the world. Kayaking in the mangroves in the dark was one of the coolest things I've ever done, and the bioluminescence was an incredible extra bonus.

  • Six hours, moderate, $$$.

America's Cup 12-Meter Regatta, St. Maarten

Are you up for a yacht race? You don't need any experience sailing to participate. You can simply go along for the ride, or with some instruction, help sail the boat as you race to the finish. It's possible to hop on a sailboat and cruise around sipping fruity drinks on any island in the Caribbean. What you cannot do everywhere is help sail the boat or participate in a race. St. Maarten is known for sailing -- why not join the fun?

  • 2 1/2 hours, challenging, $$$.

National Park Snorkeling Excursion to St. John, St. Thomas

excursions in caribbean

This excursion simplifies the complicated process of getting from the cruise pier on St. Thomas to the island of St. John, home of Virgin Islands National Park. You'll get to see a bit of St. Thomas on the way to the boat dock, then enjoy a beautiful boat ride before your snorkeling begins. This is the spot for some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean because the park encompasses over 18,000 acres of submerged land that include 45 species of hard coral, 400 species of reef-associated fish and 17 documented species of whales and dolphins.

  • 3 1/2 hours, easy to moderate, $$.

Related: Best Caribbean cruise tips to help you make the most of your time aboard and ashore

Monserrat Volcano Flightseeing, Antigua

Helicopter flightseeing is a popular shore excursion in other destinations, but it's not something you'll find in most of the Caribbean. This flight offers the opportunity to see a still-active volcano from the air, as well as experience the beauty of the islands from a unique perspective. There's also the possibility of seeing sea life like whales, dolphins and turtles from the air as you fly between the islands.

  • Two hours, easy, $$$$$.

Best Western Caribbean shore excursions

Blue hole and konoko falls, jamaica.

Waterfall excursions are a big deal in Jamaica, with multiple excursions featuring the often overcrowded Dunn's River Falls. This tour from Ocho Rios takes you off the beaten path to two slightly less crowded sets of falls. Blue Hole is an idyllic waterfall-fed swimming hole, where the more daring can jump from heights into the pool below. Konoko Falls is located within a botanical garden featuring parrots, crocodiles and tropical birds found on the island. Here, you can climb to the top of the falls for a better look and enjoy a swim in natural pools.

  • 4 1/2 hours, moderate, $$$.

Flavors of Jamaica

Jerk chicken is one of the best-known dishes of the Caribbean. Finding an excursion that allows you to experience it firsthand with a cooking class that teaches you about the flavors and culture of Jamaica is possible in most Jamaican ports. Most tours have you cooking your own lunch under the tutelage of a Jamaican chef. In Ocho Rios, a visit to a Jamaican estate house is a bonus.

  • Three hours, easy, $$$.

Xocolatl — The Chocolate Experience, Roatan

You may think you know chocolate, but Mayan chocolate is a palate pleaser not well known around the globe. This excursion from Roatan, Honduras, allows you to learn and taste how chocolate fits into the Mayan culture. Part cultural education, part Honduran traditional lunch, this tour is a delightful option for Roatan cruisers eager to skip the sun and sand to experience a local meal.

  • Three hours, easy, $$.

Cave Tubing, Belize

excursions in caribbean

Cave tubing is the only super popular excursion that made the list. Cave tubing is famous in Belize, and we didn't want you to miss out. The drive through the jungle to get to the caves is half the fun of the excursion. Upon arrival, and after a safety briefing, you'll quickly get cool and wet floating through a tunnel of limestone. You'll want a waterproof camera for this one.

  • 5 1/2 hours, moderate, $$.

Discover Scuba Diving From Shore, Grand Cayman

If you've ever thought of learning to scuba dive, a Discover Scuba course is the way to try it without taking hours of classes or investing loads of money. If you are going to try it, you might as well try it in one of the best diving locations on the planet. Plus, doing it from shore is less intimidating than trying it for the first time from a boat.

Several dive operators set up shop right at the shore within walking distance of the tender docks. You can make your own arrangements with the dive shops in advance to participate in a Discover Scuba class or sign up for a ship's excursion if there is one. You'll learn the basics of breathing through a regulator, then enjoy a guided dive around the reef just offshore. (The reason ships anchor offshore at Grand Cayman.)

Save a Sea Turtle Experience, Cozumel

excursions in caribbean

Most cruisers park their sunscreened bodies on a towel in the sand at one of the many beaches in Cozumel, Mexico, but you do have other options. Why not do something as cool as participating in a sea turtle hatching?

When sea turtles hatch, not all of them make it out of the nest and into the sea. This educational excursion allows you to give a helping hand to the little guys that didn't make it out. Under the careful watch of experts, you'll dig in the sand at already-hatched nesting areas looking for hatchlings that can either be helped into the ocean or retrieved and raised in a sanctuary until they are strong enough to be released. Bonus: Tiny baby sea turtles are adorable.

  • Four hours, moderate, $$$.

Best Southern Caribbean shore excursions

Whale and dolphin safari, dominica.

There is exactly one place on the planet with a known resident pod of nonmigrating sperm whales, and it's off the shores of Dominica. Come see them on a guide boat licensed to seek out both whales and dolphins; sperm whales aren't the only cetaceans that pass through this area. As with any whale watching, there aren't any guarantees, but this tour puts you in the right place for sightings.

  • 3 1/2 hours, easy, $$.

Related: The best Caribbean cruises for every type of traveler

Cave Snorkeling, Bonaire

Bonaire has dozens of accessible caves, some filled with actively growing stalactites and stalagmites. Most cruise excursions will take you to at least two of them. These tours are not for the faint of heart.

Climbing into the caves is the hardest part. Some involve ladders; others are more challenging, requiring you to don a climbing harness and pick your way down a rock wall with the help of an expert guide.

Once inside the cave, snorkeling allows you to experience the incredible clarity of the water that has filtered through rock crevices to form pools. You may need to take a brief swim through a passage leading to another room in the cavern. If you're up for it, you'll return to the ship with a remarkable story. This is near the top of the list of amazing things I have done.

  • Three hours, challenging, $$.

Sky Canopy and Aerial Tram, St. Lucia

excursions in caribbean

Many islands offer adventure courses, but the geography of St. Lucia gives it the unique ability to offer a true treetop zip line experience among the island's mountain peaks. Start by taking a gondola ride into the mountains, ending near the first zip line tower. The lines are interspersed with rope bridges, making the whole course an adventure. Bonus: There's a cold beer waiting for you at the cantina when you finish.

  • 4 1/2-5 hours, moderate, $$$.

Pilot Your Own Boat and Snorkeling Tour, Grenada

Totally different from a personal watercraft, these little two-person inflatable motorboats (picture miniature Zodiacs) are crazy fun to drive. The snorkeling part of the excursion lets you explore one of the world's best underwater sculpture parks. The excursion is fun and lets you get wet, while leaving you plenty of time to shop or explore the port.

Half-Day Land Rover Safari, Aruba

excursions in caribbean

Some of Aruba's best sites require a 4x4 to get there. The Land Rover option is a bit more comfortable than the ATVs many people choose. You'll visit the famous California Lighthouse and the more picturesque side of the island. On most of these excursions, you'll end up at a beach, so wear your swimsuit and bring a towel.

4x4 Adventure and Harrison's Cave Exploration, Barbados

If you want to get out of the city and see Barbados in its rawest form, this 4x4 adventure is a superb option. You'll enjoy a forest drive, featuring scenic overlooks and a view of the pounding Atlantic Ocean (and the rock formations it creates) where it meets the Caribbean on the eastern side of Barbados before enjoying a motorized tram ride through Harrison's Cave. The active cave (meaning it has water flowing through it) has a great hall with a ceiling height of almost 50 feet.

Bottom line

Shore excursions in the Caribbean give you the opportunity to explore beyond the pier or even the city where your ship docks. Whether you crave water sports, wildlife or a taste of local food, you can easily find an activity to enhance your time ashore. When your ship stays in port all day, as they often do in the Caribbean, half-day excursions leave you plenty of time for those other cruise basics, like shopping, lounging on the beach and kicking back with a tropical drink.

Eastern Caribbean Cruise Ports & Shore Excursions

The Eastern Caribbean boasts some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. The U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix) are notorious for gorgeous beaches, 5-star resorts, and incredible cuisine. St. Martin/St. Maarten is noted for its diversity and friendly locals. Whereas the British Virgin Islands (Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Tortola) are well known for their British hospitality. You'll also find Puerto Rico, Grand Turk, St. Barts, Antigua, Anguilla, Les Saintes, and Dominica. Some of these islands might have fewer visitors and therefore will offer that truly "get away from it all" island feeling. Cruise ships make stops at all these islands, although there are fewer stops at the smaller locations, check with your travel agent. Excursions offer the perfect way for visitors to see exactly what they want but without the hassle of watching a clock. Most islands offer sightseeing such as our  St. Thomas Island Sightseeing Excursion ,  St. John's Antigua Island Sightseeing Excursion  or  Dominica Natural Highlights Eco Excursion . From eco-adventures to parasailing, there is certainly much to do. Water sports are quite popular like our St. Maarten Jet Ski at Orient Bay Beach , of course, but there are biking such as the St. Maarten Historical Philipsburg Bike Excursion , hiking, and zip-lining as on our San Juan Canopy and Zipline Excursion Adventure , and dune buggy activities and much more. Check out our Grand Turk Island Trails and Beach ATV Excursion for some fast-paced fun! The activities offered are only limited by your imagination. Well known for beautiful beaches and tropical climates, the Eastern Caribbean draws visitors from all over the world to marvel at the lovely tropical splendor of the local flora and fauna. Many of the islands also offer unique cuisine from a wide variety of indigenous peoples mixed with the flavors of the visitors who decided to stay. With eating establishments as varied as beach shacks all the way up to 5-star restaurants, finding something to please the palate won't be difficult. In fact, any trip to the Eastern Caribbean will help to make those memories that last a lifetime, enjoy!

Caribbean Shore Excursions Let You Feel the Island Vibe

It’s a fact: There’s nothing like a Caribbean cruise for chilling out, kicking back, and leaving real life behind for a bit, and it’s also a fact that booking Caribbean shore excursions is the perfect way to exponentially increase the chill factor.

On every port of call in the Caribbean , cruise excursions offer luxury options for amazing experiences: Choose beach breaks at private resorts on Punta Cana, Costa Maya, St. Croix , or Barbados to name a few, offering pristine beaches, pure pampering, and plenty of drinks; book a day of sailing from St. Thomas, Grenada , and other islands, aboard beautifully appointed yachts or catamarans, viewing the islands water-side as you glide across calm seas and bays with stops for swimming right off the boat, exploring remote beaches, and feasting on champagne and seafood; when docked at Philipsburg, St. Maarten , day-trip-it to St. Bart’s, often said to be one of the most elite islands in the Caribbean, with its 14 gleaming, white-sand beaches, chic restaurants, and designer boutiques that rival New York’s Madison Avenue.

Book Caribbean shore excursions to experience the most extraordinary watersports on each island port of call: Find your snorkel paradise in the calm, shallow, crystal-clear waters off Grand Cayman, St. John ,or Klein, Bonaire, as you swim around protected coral reefs and colorful tropical fish; scuba dive at amazing sites around Curaçao, Dominica, and Bonaire ; swim with stingrays at Grand Cayman , Curaçao, and Antigua, swim with dolphins at Punta Cana or with green sea turtles at Basseterre, St. Kitts, or Barbados ; cruise on a specially outfitted boat to spot dolphins and whales at St. Lucia .

When you schedule Caribbean shore excursions expect to be captivated by an island’s natural beauty: the raw power of Punta Cana ’s Blue Lagoon; the sheer limestone cliff and the spectacular view from the Cueva Ventana (Window Cave) in San Juan, Puerto Rico ; the Mountain Top on St. Thomas , with its breathtaking view of the Caribbean Sea and neighboring islands; the three-in-one Concord Waterfalls at Grand Etang Lake on Grenada.

As you cruise the Caribbean, get to know the islands’ distinguishing cultures and exciting cuisines through tours like “Mojitos and Mofongo” at San Juan; “Mount Gay Rum Experience” in Barbados; “Around the Island of Spice” on Grenada; “At Home Cooking with Chef Nicole” on Antigua; “Caribbean Cooks” on St. Kitts; and “Island Roots and Chocolate Traditions” in Cozumel . Experience tours and tastings of the Caribbean’s favorite spirit, rum in San Juan, Barbados, Martinique, and St. Croix.

Royal caribbean vs. carnival: quick comparison chart.

Decide which line is best based on costs, food, onboard entertainment and other key factors.

Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have quite a bit in common.

Trying to choose between Royal Caribbean and Carnival for your next cruise? Check out the comparison chart below, then read on for more details.

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas side by side at sea.

Winner: Royal Caribbean

When it comes to fleet size as well as the features available on cruise ships, Royal Caribbean has an edge over Carnival Cruise Line. That's because Royal Caribbean already has 28 ships in operation, including its incredible Oasis Class, Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class ships. Oasis Class vessels like Allure of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are some of the largest in the world – and Royal Caribbean Group is constantly rolling out new, even bigger cruise ships with better amenities and new features. For example, the new Icon of the Seas (scheduled to debut in 2024) plans to have the largest water park at sea, the largest swimming pool at sea, and a range of over-the-top cabins and suites for families of all sizes.

Meanwhile, Carnival currently operates 25 different vessels with a few more on the way. Newer ships like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia aren't as large and grand as Royal Caribbean ships, nor are the brand-new vessels the company is planning for late 2023 and 2024. For example, the new Carnival Jubilee that is set to begin sailing later in 2023 will have 15 passenger decks and capacity for up to 6,631 guests, compared to 18 guest decks and 7,600 passengers on Icon of the Seas.

Comparing cabins across cruise lines as a whole isn't an easy feat, mostly because companies tend to offer larger suites and cabins with a better layout on their newer ships . You'll therefore likely have a nicer cabin on one of Carnival's newest vessels compared to an older ship from Royal Caribbean, and of course the opposite is also true. Cabin sizes and layouts also vary widely across the vessels of both brands, and that's true even for basic interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.

That said, Royal Caribbean still comes out ahead in this category, since the line boasts more square footage in some of the most basic cabins as well as more over-the-top luxury accommodations, especially for families.

As an example, most inside cabins on Allure of the Seas feature 172 square feet of space, whereas Carnival Celebration's inside cabins are slightly smaller at 158 square feet. Meanwhile, the largest suites on Celebration are the Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, with 1,120 square feet of space including the balcony, and the Carnival Excel Aft Suite, which has 861 square feet of interior and balcony space. Compare those options to the Sky Loft Suites on Allure of the Seas, which feature 1,132 square feet across the room and balcony, and the spacious two-bedroom AquaTheater Suites with 1,595 square feet including the balcony.

Food options vary widely across vessels within any cruise brand, and this is especially true with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. For example, older ships from both cruise lines offer fewer specialty dining options overall along with the main dining rooms and buffet options cruisers come to expect, whereas newer ships from both lines feature a lot more unique and innovative options.

When you view the cruise dining options from both lines, you'll quickly find that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean pull out all the stops when it comes to food. For example, Carnival ships include a range of eateries from large and expansive buffets to main dining rooms to unique offerings like Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina. Meanwhile, specialty dining on Carnival vessels features options like teppanyaki, Emeril's Bistros at Sea and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Royal Caribbean ships feature convenient buffets and main dining room experiences, as well as included options like pizza kitchens, noodle bars and casual fast food. Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean ranges from the brand's Chef's Table experience to Johnny Rockets' burgers and shakes to innovative fine dining at Wonderland.

Drink packages

A group of friends enjoying drinks at Lime and Coconut on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer drink packages that cruisers can purchase as part of their vacation to get a more all-inclusive feel . Then again, the value of these packages depends on how much you drink over the course of your trip. Also note that the cost of drink packages across all cruise lines can vary depending on the ship, itinerary, travel dates, length of trip and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out slightly ahead in this category because the line offers three tiers of drink packages for guests with different needs. Choose from the Classic Soda Package; the Refreshment Package, which includes soda along with coffees, juices and even milkshakes at Johnny Rockets; and the Deluxe Beverage Package, which adds in beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Meanwhile, Carnival offers just two different drink packages: the Bottomless Bubbles package, which covers soft drinks and juice, and the Cheers! drink package, which adds in spirits and cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, specialty coffee, energy drinks and more.

Onboard activities

A waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Analyzing onboard activities across cruise lines isn't always easy – you really have to break down this category by ship for a true comparison. When you do that with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you'll find that both lines offer fun activities for all ages, from onboard water parks to hosted games, casinos and more.

That said, Royal Caribbean does take things up a notch in this category, especially on the line's newer ships. Some Royal Caribbean vessels offer escape rooms, surf simulators, zip lines, game shows and over-the-top water parks with incredible slides for thrill-seekers. For example, Freedom of the Seas boasts huge onboard waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, mini-golf and more. Don't forget about Icon of the Seas with its massive water park and pool offerings in the works. Meanwhile, standout activities on Carnival ships include Family Feud Live, onboard water parks and the thrilling SkyRide.

Live entertainment

"Ice Spectacular" show on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas.

The quality of cruise ship entertainment varies widely based on the quality of the talent booked for individual ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer their share of live music and entertainment, including performances by bands and singers, karaoke, and piano bars. Meanwhile, both lines also boast their own theaters on every vessel, which often feature Broadway-style shows, singing and dancing, comedy acts, and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out ahead in this category since its vessels feature award-winning musicals like "Hairspray," "Mamma Mia!" and "Cats." The open-air AquaTheater on Oasis Class ships also wows guests with incredible diving feats, stunts and aerial acrobatics. Some Royal Caribbean ships even have onboard ice skating performances and ice games.

Kids programming

Winner: Carnival

Both cruise lines have kids clubs that cater to younger guests of all ages, with each one offering supervised care so parents can drop the kids off for some alone time or a quiet dinner on the ship. However, Carnival stands out slightly in this category due to the six different clubs offered across the fleet for children and teens between 6 months and 17 years old. Carnival also offers supervised Night Owls services for kids 11 and younger, which lets parents get out and have some late-night fun for an extra charge.

Royal Caribbean offers four kids clubs for children ages six months to 12, along with a separate club for tweens and teens . Supervised child care is available for free during the day, and you can opt for paid care after hours as well.

Adults-only offerings

A group of adults drinking and laughing at the Serenity Retreat on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras.

Both cruise lines offer their share of adults-only spaces and things to do, from onboard casinos to luxurious spas to bars that offer cocktails and live entertainment at all hours of the day and night. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer adults-only areas on some of their ships.

On Carnival, for example, cruisers will find the Serenity Adults-Only Retreat for sailors 21 and older with extra space and comfortable chairs for relaxation, along with its own bar nearby. On many Royal Caribbean vessels, on the other hand, the onboard Solarium for ages 16-plus has its own pool and extra space to find peace and quiet.

Carnival's Serenity relaxation area is included for guests. While Royal Caribbean's Solarium is typically also included, on certain sailings there is restricted access by fare class.

Shore excursions

Shore excursions offered by cruise lines are largely operated by third-party companies and are often the same across brands. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean boast a broad selection of excursions in destinations around the world, from snorkeling and scuba tours in the Caribbean to city tours, horseback riding, cooking classes and more.

Both cruise lines offer private and custom tours you can book through your ship as well.

Private island experiences

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival each have their own private island in the Bahamas , which is included in most itineraries to this part of the world. These private islands provide a fun beach escape for families to enjoy, whether you want to relax in the sun or take part in some of the available activities.

Royal Caribbean's private island, called Perfect Day at CocoCay, is the more impressive option due to everything it includes: a heart-thumping water park, its own wave pool, a zip line, a hot air balloon experience and overwater bungalows you can book for the day, among other offerings. Meanwhile, Carnival's Half Moon Cay has a unique beached pirate ship to explore – but fewer amenities overall.

Note that both private islands have plenty of beach space for guests to spread out and relax, as well as restaurants and bars. You can also book excursions on both private islands, which include activities like snorkeling and water sports.

Comparing costs across cruise lines can be tricky since fares and available sales vary throughout the year, as well as based on the vessel booked, the cruise itinerary, the number and age of travelers, and more. To get an idea of who wins on price, we looked for two similar cruises on comparable ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, then priced out an option for a family of four with two children ages 8 and 10. For the purpose of this comparison, we used seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises on Carnival Celebration and Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, both of which began sailing in 2022.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary from Miami stops in Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands . By comparison, the Wonder of the Seas sailing leaves from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten ; San Juan; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

The chart below shows the total cost (including taxes and fees) for a family of four in January 2024 in both an ocean view and a typical balcony cabin across both cruise lines. Note that, for the purpose of this comparison, we selected the least expensive room option in each category.
