Leaving your family and working in a foreign land might sound exciting, but it’s not so. After a while, you might become homesick and miss your family. While you can go and meet your family and friends on leave, you get a vacation only once a year.

This is why most expatriates in Oman bring their families through the family residency visa. The visa is granted to wife of the expatriate and his kids below 21 years of age. A foreign wife of an Oman resident is also eligible for a family residence visa, once the Ministry of Interior confirms the marriage.

Oman Observer

Muscat: The family members of the expatriates currently on a visit visa in Oman will be allowed to convert into a family visa without leaving the country.

"It is possible, in the current situation, it is possible to transfer from a visit visa to a family visa without the person required to travel abroad. The request can be made directly at the Directorate General of Passports and Residence," ROP said in a reply to question if there is a need to travel outside the country to get the visit visa converted into a family visa.

"The family Joining Visa is granted to the wife of the foreigner who is a resident in Oman, and also to his children within the age limit. It’s also granted to a foreign wife of an Omani national at his request and subject to a certificate from the authority concerned confirming the status of the marriage."

Points for Family Visitors to be Aware of in Oman

  • Ladies are not required to be covered but should dress conservatively to avoid unwanted attention. You should dress more conservatively than you would in Dubai, for example. Read our full guide on what to wear for children, women & men here.
  • Beyond the bigger towns, supplies of Western-brand baby products are more difficult to get. Stock up on anything you need whilst in Muscat, Sohar or Nizwa, where there are big supermarkets like Carrefour. Khasab on the Musandam Peninsular has a large Lulus for supplies.

General Travel Tips for Visiting Oman

  • In some places such as the Musandam Peninsula, UAE Dirhams are accepted at a 10:1 rate to the Omani Riyal – a small downside in the exchange, but it may well save you trying to find an ATM if you are only in Oman for a day or two.
  • Outside of major cities, don’t expect there to be ATMs and credit card facilities everywhere.
  • Driving in Oman is on the right side; the steering wheel is on the left. Roads are easy to navigate, and self-driving is straightforward, making it an excellent country for road trips.
  • Remote areas of the country will not have cell services; if you are self-driving, make sure you have downloaded maps too.

When is it Best to Visit Oman

Oman is best visited during the cooler winter months of the year where daytime temperatures are pleasant – October through to May.  It can rain in the winter and spring, be warned of the risk of flash flooding risks, particular under mountains.

During the summer months of July through to September, the southern city of Salalah benefits from the Khareef – monsoonal weather that makes temperatures much cooler than elsewhere on the Arabian Peninsula.  The hottest month of the year is June, though not as hot as other parts of the Middle East.

If your loved ones are planning a trip to the UAE, here's a reminder: Tourists can apply for a family group visit visa, which is free of cost for children.

Under the scheme, children under the age of 18 can be granted a visa for free while usual charges apply to their parents.

“The application for this visa should be submitted along with either father’s or mother’s application,” said Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager for inbound and outbound operations at Regal Tours Worldwide.

Industry experts said several visitors had been opting for this entry permit.

“A family group visit visa is more convenient and cost-effective for families, given that there is no visa fee for children under the age of 18,” Subair said, adding that there are no restrictions on the number of children who can apply for the permit.

The free visa is also applicable even to children who are travelling with just one parent, he explained. It is available for a 30- or 60-day stay, which can be extended within the country.

With the festive season just around the corner, several family group visit visas are being issued every day — particularly to Indians who wish to celebrate Diwali in Dubai, said Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels.

This visa, however, is not new. It was introduced two years ago and has since been a popular option for visitors from around the world.

How to apply

  • A family will have to submit copies of their passports and photos — all at once — to a travel agency.
  • Fees are paid. Note that though the visa is free for children, travel agent service charges and insurance fees will apply.
  • The agency then processes the application.
  • The visa is usually issued in a day or two.
  • Visa fee for parents, along with the service charge for children, may vary depending on the travel agency.
  • A 30-day visa for a parent ranges from Dh350 to Dh500.
  • Service charge and insurance for a child range between Dh80 and Dh120.
  • A 60-day visa will cost Dh500 to Dh650, while the service charge, including insurance, may vary from Dh130 to Dh170.

Requirements

  • Passport copy
  • Passport-sized photograph

Extension policy

Experts say the family visa can be extended without exiting the country, “however, a full visa fee has to be paid for children. The extension within the country is not free for children", said Subair.

“Visitors can extend the family visa for up to 120 days without exiting the country,” he added.
