The migratory route from the Caribbean to the Gulf, where many fish species mate and spawn before returning to the Atlantic, runs right through the Yucatán Channel, and right where the channel narrows to a funnel at Cabo Catoche Playa del Carmen fishing is always good.

In February anglers flock to Isla Mujeres, Cancún, and Cozumel for white marlin, until late spring. From the months of March through July, Sailfish and marlin are abundant off of Playa del Carmen as they migrate in spring and summer. This is one of the rare places in the world where you can catch a Grand Slam of billfish all in the same day! But, billfish are only one of the area’s many draws; truth is that anywhere along the coast fish are certain to be biting, unless a cold thermal has driven them south to warmer water. October is prime time for swordfish in the Yucatán Channel, and off of Chinchorro and the offshore banks farther south in Quintana Roo. Then in December and January migrating Atlantic Sailfish gather in the Yucatán Channel off of Isla Mujeres, chasing schools of baitfish heading into the area— and the bite increases as spring approaches!

Playa del Carmen fishing is not known for its flats or shore fishing, but you can definitely toss a line out from the beach, as long as you stay south of the hotels, and 250-feet away from swimmers.

The waters south of Playa del Carmen towards the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, all the way to Asención Bay are a haven for fly fishermen and inshore fishing. This area boasts of several world famous fly fishing resorts, perfect for that special vacation you’ve always dreamed of— days full of chasing bonefish, permit, tarpon, yellowtail, trout, barracuda, and jack crevalle. Some resorts cater to specific areas and specific fish such as tarpon and permit— so if fly fishing on the Yucatán Peninsula is your dream, there are many places to make that happen. As in other parts of Mexico, bring your own fly fishing gear, although there are shops and gear available in some of the larger resorts.

Top sport fishing species in Playa del Carmen

The great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), often referred to as barracuda, is a long predator that can be found in tropical and subtropical waters where they like to patroll mangroves, reefs and drop-offs. Record barracuda can grow to 1,5m and weigh over 45kg (100lb+).

Wahoo ( Acanthocybium solandri ), also known as Ono (meaning “delicious” in Hawaiian), are found in many subtropical and tropical waters. They’re identifiable by their blue-green upper body which shifts into silver towards their belly. They also have blue vertical striping along their sides. These predators are torpedo-shaped and have long and largemouths with teeth.

Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) are also commonly referred to as dorado, dolphin or dolphinfish. They are recognizable by their bluntly shaped heads, long dorsal fin and their bright colouring, dark blue and green on their dorsal side and yellow on their sides and underside. 

Sailfish  (Istiophorus)  are one the most wanted fish in the sport fishing world. Often described as the fastest fish in the sea, sailfish can weigh up to 90 kg (200 pounds) and grow up to 3 m (9.7 ft) in length.

The White Marlin ( Kajikia albida ) is a very nice predator which can be caught off shore in warmer waters. This powerful fighter usually feeds during day time on fish, octopuses and squids. They can be caught trolling with artificial lures or with dead bait (bonito, mackerel...).

LEGISLATION / REGULATIONS

If you are fishing from the shore, you will not need a fishing license. However, Mexico has strict fishing regulations for fishing from boats. Essentially, every person aboard a boat that has fishing equipment on board is required to have a license.

If you plan on using a fishing charter, most charter boats include fishing licenses in the cost of the charter, but to be sure it is best to ask when booking your trip. The Playa del Carmen fishing charters sometimes include the lincense in the price of the trip.

How much does it cost to rent a boat to fish in Playa del Carmen?

Depending on the charter fishing boat and on the duration of your fishing tour, you’ll pay more or less for the tour. The price for a private 4 hour Playa del Carmen fishing trip with a smaller boat is $275. A half day trip with a 40ft charter costs around $650, while an 8 hour private trip will cost you $1050.

What does the price include?

The price usually includes the captain, fishing tackle, fuel, bait & lures and licenses. On every listing we indicate whether drinks and food are included.

Make sure you know if bait and the local tax (16%) is included in the price or not as this can make quite a difference in the final price.

Some fishing charters also offer (free) pick-up and transportation from and to the hotel. If the hotel is far away from the port, there can be an extra charge for the transportation.

He had a great boat with all the gear and plenty of drinks, but most importantly a WONDERFUL personality. We chatted and joked the whole trip (he spoke excellent English) and we had so much fun the first time out we booked him again!

Not only did we fish, but we did some great snorkeling as well to break up the trip. After snorkeling we caught six or seven fish of different kinds - none of which we've caught before, which was very exciting.

Captain Alberto really knows how to find the fish. Better yet, Captain Alberto's brother owned a restaurant by the marina and he cleaned and prepared all of our fish for us! It was the best ceviche we'd EVER had, hands-down. I can't think of a better way to cap off an outstanding day.

More Fishing Time… Shorter travel times to the Fishing Grounds …

Surprisingly, the Playa del Carmen charter boats are NOT docked at Playa del Carmen, but at two ports some distance down the coast. Depending on which charter you chose (and thus which port their boat is docked at) the journey time by car is either one hour or 50 minutes.

Add to that the hour or more needed to travel by sea to our fishing grounds off Cozumel Island and you have a total traveling of about two hours – PLUS another two hours for the return trip .

Contrast that with simply hopping on the regular ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, a trip that takes just 20-25 minutes (the fare is just $6USD per person each way).

Then, once you land on Cozumel, our boats are just a 3 minute taxi ride away.

So within 30 minutes or so of leaving Playa del Carmen you’ll be on board our beautifully equipped comfortable boat.

Then – roughly 10 minutes later – you’ll be over our stunning world class fishing grounds, feeling the excitement rising as you get ready to cast your first line.

I've been in a couple of Deep Sea Fishing Trips, however none in this setting..."

The online booking went smoothly. The boat was amazing, the staff even more amazing and very friendly crew.

I went by myself and caught 3 Mahi mahi, a Mackerel and two very large Wahoos. The Wahoos both hit at the same time on different rods. I reeled one in, took pictures of it and the staff kept the second one on until i was ready for it.

And about an hour once we found that spot we had caught 5 large Amberjacks - Great Bottom Fishing Trip for an Experienced Fisherman or a Newbie"

We met Captain Alberto about 8:30 in the morning at the Marina. He was very friendly and welcoming from the start.

We tried two spots with no success, but the third was our Magic Spot. We were catching fish after fish. And about an hour once we found that spot we had caught five large amberjacks, ranging in size from 20 to 50 pounds.

We had one more on line, but it broke and that one got away. Captain Alberto is an absolute beast jigging those fish. We were catching them in about 150 to 200 feet and reeling them in was tough, exhausting work.

I have new respect for these guys that reel in those huge fish with nothing to support themselves to the boat.

Captain Alberto and his helper could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Thank you for such a great morning on the water!

• If you are staying in Cozumel: Alternatively, you can get a taxi, which will get you to 'Marina Caleta' in about 5 minutes. And there are plenty of taxis to take you back to the Ferry Pier after the fishing trip.

YES. You take the short ferry trip (about 25 minutes) to the island of Cozumel where our boats are based. The meeting point is the “Marina Caleta” – just a mile along the shore from where you arrive on the ferry at the Ferry Pier.

Alternatively, a taxi from the Ferry Pier will get you to our boat in about three minutes.

YES. You meet us at the “Marina Caleta” on Cozumel – just a few minutes by taxi, which you’ll be able to hire right by the Cruise Pier.

You will arrive at the Ferry Pier, which is about a mile from where our boats are berthed at the “Marina Caleta”. You will receive full directions with the confirmation of your booking if you want to make the gentle stroll along the shore.

Alternatively, you’ll find plenty of taxis at the Ferry Pier. The fare for four people to the marina is just $8USD and the journey takes just a few minutes.

We can set off at any time to suite you from 8.00am to 2.00pm. We offer trips lasting four, six or eight hours. If you are fishing and snorkeling trips need to be of six or eight hours to fit it all in.

You will need to catch a ferry at least ONE HOUR BEFORE our scheduled departure time.

The ferry runs every hour from 7.00 am to 11.00 pm. So, if you want to make an early start with us, take the 7.00 am ferry and you’ll be in good time for departure at 8.00 am.

Our meeting point at “Marina Caleta” is only a mile from the Ferry Pier, which is where you will arrive on Cozumel. You will receive full directions in the email confirming your booking.

Alternatively you can take a taxi from just by the Ferry Pier which will drop you off at the “Marina Caleta” about 3 minutes later.

You’ll feel the excitement rising as your ferry from Playa del Carmen docks at the Ferry Pier on the island of Cozumel, because you’ll know you’re just about to start a great day’s fishing.

From the Ferry Pier it’s just a gentle stroll of a couple of blocks in a straight line to the ‘San Miguel Church’, where we are waiting to greet you.

Than after a short ride, we arrive at the marina, where our tiny fleet of three boats is moored.

A short trip then brings us to our fishing grounds – the three beautiful lagoons of Paso Balem, Rio de la Plata and Monte Cristo, located in the north of the island.

Then, if you haven’t brought your own fishing gear, you can enjoy using the world’s finest fishing tackle by Orvis and Sage.

Our main target is bonefish, which are plentiful all year round. And you can also catch snook and tarpon and permit fish, in season. Permit fish are only for experienced anglers, as they can be quite a handful to catch!

Once you’re all set, it won’t be long before your guide alerts you that the fish are coming your way. Then, after a short battle, you’ll get your day off to a flying start with the excitement of your first catch.

I hope you’ve brought your camera, because you’re bound to want to show those envious folks back home your very first catch!

We always meet at the 'San Miguel Church' , a well known landmark in Cozumel’s 'Downtown Square'. So …

• Your ferry from Playa del Carmen will arrive at the Cozumel Ferry Pier. From there it's just a pleasant two block stroll in a straight line to the 'San Miguel Church', in 'Downtown Square'.
• The staff at the ferry pier will be happy to tell you way or there will be plenty of taxis around, if you'd rather take a very short ride. Although, it’s really simple, LITERALLY 2 blocks straight from the Ferry Pier.

Wherever you’re coming from, you’ll receive full directions with your Confirmation Email that will be instantly sent to you when you book your fishing trip.

If you are coming from Playa del Carmen, the Ferry ride to Cozumel lasts 20 minutes, and costs only $6usd each way. Ferries depart every hour both ways starting at 7am until 11pm.

There will always be Taxis available early in the morning for you to get to the Ferry Pier. As every Hotel in Playa del Carmen or the Mayan Riviera has a taxi station with cabs available 24/7.

Taxi rides from most Hotels in Playa del Carmen and the Mayan Riviera to the Ferry Pier lasts 10-15 minutes, and cost in average $10 - $15 USD each way per taxi.

The Ferry ride to Cozumel

Catch the 7 am, or 8 am Ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, depending on your scheduled departure time.

You will be in Cozumel in just 20 to 25 minutes. And the ride costs $6usd each way — no need to buy round trip tickets.

Meet us two blocks down the Ferry Pier at the San Miguel Church. Easy to find us, you’ll have directions in your Confirmation Email.

Meeting up for your Fishing Trip

You’ll find our meeting place just 2 miles from the Cruise Pier at the San Miguel Church in Downtown Cozumel.

From here on, we take care of your transportation to the Pier where we have our Pangas moored near the Flats area, and back to the Church.

On our Way to the Flats

As we fire up the powerful eco-friendly marine engine your excitement will rise to fever pitch.

Then, after just ten minutes or so at sea we arrive at the fishing grounds by the Flats ready to start your big adventure.

Bonefishing at Paso Belem Lagoon

First we´ll wade the Flats for Bonefish. You’ll likely see large schools of 18 to 25 Bonefish each school. You will be fishing for Bonefish until around lunch time.

Going for Snook and baby Tarpon

Then we stop for lunch, and continue far inside the lagoons number 2 and 3. Laguna Montecristo and Laguna Rio de la Plata.

You will go after Snook and baby Tarpon for another 2 or 3 hours. You will be fishing from the boat during this time.

Targeting Permit (when available)

Finally, on our way back to the Marina, we’ll stop by a Bay Beach to target Permit. This way you’ll have the chance to try your luck with 4 different species in one day of fishing.

Back at the Meeting Point

Once we are back in town, we’ll drop you off directly at the San Miguel Church, the Place where we first met you in the morning.

From here you can take a Taxi back to Cruise Ship, or take the Ferry back to Playa del Carmen.

We specialize in fly and spin fishing in the flats, and we mainly target Bonefish all year around. However, there are other species we can target during some months of the year. For specific information about the species available, please see our Cozumel Flats Fishing season section.

We go to the Northern Flats of Cozumel to fly and spin fishing. In the flats area, there are 3 lagoons; Rio de la Plata lagoon, Paso Balem lagoon, and Monte Cristo lagoon.

We suggest you to bring polarized sunglasses, long-sleeve shirt, long pants, wading shoes, etc. We'll provide all light tackle and flies you will use to cast the flats in Cozumel. We use Orvis tackle, and it's in excellent conditions.

We suggest you to look at our Tackle and Flies suggestions section for detail information about tackle, flies, and lures that work best by fish we target.

Our meeting point is in the heart of downtown at the Local Church "San Miguel" in the main Plaza. No worries, you won't get lost. Cozumel is a very small Island, and there's only one Church in Downtown Plaza. We'll be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it, and if you are a fisherman you will spot the fisherman waiting for you. Just kidding.

If you are coming to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen (Mayan Riviera area), just go to the Ferry Pier in Playa del Carmen, and take the Ferry to cross over to Cozumel. The ferries run every hour, and the ride takes about 35 minutes. Once you get here in Cozumel, just walk outside the Ferry Pier, and cross the street towards inside the Plaza, then walk straight 2 blocks and the "San Miguel Church" is right there.

If you are coming from Cancun, please take a taxi or Bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. The ride from Cancun to Playa del Carmen takes about 45 minutes. Once in Playa del Carmen, just go to the Ferry Pier to cross over to Cozumel. The ferries run every hour, and the ride takes about 35 minutes. Once you get here in Cozumel, just walk outside the Ferry Pier, and cross the street towards inside the Plaza, then walk straight 2 blocks and the "San Miguel Church" is right there.

Note: the Playa del Carmen Ferry Pier is only 2 blocks from the Bus Station where you arrived from Cancun.
