From kimchi and k-pop to sundae and sushi to Hongdae and Roppongi, our students, travelers and aspiring linguists will have many cultural and culinary options. Our programs in Japan and Korea line up so you can do both student travel programs in Asia this summer.

Student Travel Programs in the Americas

Student travel programs in the Americas visit Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the United States.

In Costa Rica, get to know the Tico people, work on ecoservice, save turtles at conservation projects, volunteer in the community and find out why Costa Rica is a surfer’s paradise. On other student travel programs in the Americas , you can spend your time helping communities in the Dominican Republic, assisting local volunteers with mangrove restoration, and preserving the beach.

In Peru on student travel programs in the Americas land in the heart of the Sacred Valley, play soccer with friends, learn traditional dances from local children, and practice your Spanish as you immerse yourself in Andean life with members of the community.

Student Travel Programs in Europe

Student travel programs in Europe in 2024 center around Italy and Greece. These countries are known for their food, art, history and culture, so expect not only pasta, pizza, souvlaki, stifado, museums and mezze but also the deep cultural immersion, local partnerships and animal service experience that Rustic Pathways is known for.

With so many student travel programs in Europe to choose from, it can be quite difficult to decide what to choose. At core, it is up to each student to know their goals (make more friends, engage in meaningful service, have fun, connect with local people, etc.) and the budget that they are willing to allocate towards various student travel programs in Europe.

Student Travel Programs in the South Pacific

Join us on student travel programs in the South Pacific to discover magnificent beaches, countryside, and rainforest. The South Pacific welcomes young explorers and seasoned travelers alike.

Enjoy meaningful community service projects at a wildlife rehabilitation center and local elementary school where you’ll interact with Aussie students. Enjoy the laidback pace of Fiji where the relaxing island life and lounging in the sun will help you share laughs with your fellow Rustic Pathways travelers. Our student travel programs in the South Pacific have something for everyone.

Student Programs in Thailand

Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles, and it will welcome and captivate you. The Thai people are friendly and enjoy sharing their Buddhist culture, spicy food, and love of laughter. Our student programs in Thailand are perfect for you no matter if you are looking to care for elephants, spike your adrenaline with adventure travel, sightsee, connect with elders in rural villages, or do it all.

Thailand is the hub of Rustic’s Southeast Asia operations with programs on offer since 1999. Rustic Pathways offers student programs in Thailand that center on community service, animal conservation, outdoor adventure and immersive culture.

Student Programs in the United States

Our student programs in the United States highlight the capital, Washington, D.C.; one of the country’s most incredible natural wonders, The Grand Canyon; the home of Jazz, New Orleans; home to the last frontier, Alaska; and home to volcanic beaches, Hawaii.

If you’re not from the U.S. you can join our student programs in the United States , and we hope you gain perspective on the country. If you are an American on our student programs in the United States, we hope you can see your home with new eyes.

How to Choose A Summer Travel Program For High School Students

The task of selecting a Rustic Pathways student travel program is not an easy one but, fear not! The secret to choosing a program is understanding what you’re looking for and finding the programs that best fit your interests.

THREE QUESTIONS TO FIND THE BEST STUDENT TRAVEL PROGRAMS:

Where do i want to travel.

Is there a specific country or region that calls your name? Do you want to travel to a Spanish-speaking country? Would you rather be at the beach, in the rainforest, or on the mountains?

Think about whether or not you want to travel far away from home or go somewhere closer for this summer. Then, search through the country section to see what programs are offered in the region of your interest.

What do I want to experience?

What do you want to see, learn, or do on your trip abroad? Do you want to complete a service project, make new friends, learn a new skill, or go on a wild adventure?

Most of our programs offer a variety of learning activities, but some programs are more specific than others, and may be a better fit for you. Find the trips, tours and programs that best fit your personality.

What interests me?

What kind of service will I enjoy? Consider whether you want to work with other people, with animals, or with nature. Would you rather run a summer camp for youth, help build a home for a deserving local, or get your hands dirty on a reforestation project?

Our courses and programs are centered around specific types of service projects, so spend some time to think about what you would enjoy working on and where your skill sets lie!

Letter from our Director of Admissions

Dear Prospective Rustic Pathways Parent,

The first thing you should know about Rustic Pathways is that we are not a teen tour company. We do not believe in seeing sights through a bus window.

When we travel on our own, with friends, or with family, we toss aside our guidebooks. We ditch the tourist track and find experiences that immerse us in local life. We don’t see the world, we experience it. And that’s what happens when you travel with us.

Rustic Pathways pushes boundaries. We engage and connect deeply with new people and cultures across the world. We break the norms of student travel. We create experiences that give our students a greater understanding of the world. We seek to build a more unified global community.

On our programs, students engage with the people and places they visit. They form genuine relationships with host families, community members. They make deep friendships with our program leaders and their fellow student travelers.

They return home with more than photos and souvenirs. Our students will be the first to tell you that the people they met made their traveling experience memorable.

When you join Rustic Pathways, we welcome you into our global family Our team is full of genuine people, all working to ensure you and your family thrive.

Our program managers will meet with you in your living room to help you choose a program. Our personal travel advisors will guide you through the preparation process. We can even help decide if you need to pack that extra shirt.

Our country directors notify you when your child arrives. We will send mid-trip updates on how your group is doing.

Our program leaders come from cities, towns, and villages across the globe. We train them to create a diverse perspective and a safe space for our students to explore, engage, and grow. Every step of the Rustic Pathways experience has someone who cares about our mission.

One of my greatest sources of pride is that no two Rustic Pathways programs are the same. Each has its own unique character, charm and story. They are an earnest reflection of the locale and the people who bring it to life.

Our newest programs added this year are in Japan and Greece. These programs are stories and moments crafted by the locale and the team who designed it. Which program will be your story?

We are not a travel for teens tour company because our goal is bigger than that. Our vision for education stretches far beyond checking destinations off a list.

We know that travel can transform students and transform the world for the better. Welcome to Rustic Pathways. We can’t wait for your journey with us to begin.

Yours in travel,

Impactful Community Engagement

Rustic Pathways partners with local communities for meaningful service projects, giving travelers a way to contribute positively to the places they visit. Your efforts directly benefit local communities, ensuring that travel has a positive impact through the Rustic Pathways Foundation.

Most of our team is based outside the United States. While the cultural traditions vary from country to country, our shared values extend across borders.

Our Country teams include international and local staff who work together to ensure our students have fun, empowering, and safe experiences.

Program Leaders

Our Program Leaders are with your child 24/7. Their job is to be your kid’s favorite teacher: to make sure your child is safe, engaged and having fun.

Our Program Leaders have backgrounds in teaching, experiential education, service learning, wilderness training, international development, and other outdoor and educational fields. Each year, we hold in-country training sessions for both new and returning program leaders to ensure we maintain our standards in safety, student learning, community service, and the overall Rustic Pathways student experience.

Program Leaders are incredible role models for students and, most importantly, they are all dedicated to creating the best possible programs for students.

Small Group Sizes To Make New Friends

Our average group size is 15 people. Some programs are smaller and some are larger, depending on the program specifics and location.

All our of groups are smaller than your high school class, which means intimacy, relationships with your fellow travelers and our program leaders. This help foster personal connections and allows for a more immersive in country experience. Call Rustic Pathways for specifics on your program.

Comprehensive Travel Support and Safety

Rustic Pathways offers detailed travel preparation resources, safety guidelines, and a flexible travel guarantee for peace of mind for our students and parents.

Our local Program Leaders add safety and insight on the ground. We provide air support by partnering with Insurance company and assurance company.

From China to Japan and Mongolia to Thailand, Asia is blessed with natural and cultural beauty. Despite this beauty, dense populations, emerging economies and the industrialisation of many Asian countries make this area of the world particularly susceptible to environmental and cultural deterioration.

To minimise the impact of our School Group trips in Asia on the natural environment we practice the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', in addition to supporting local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities.

Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct and Child Welfare Code of Conduct ensure the well-being of animals and children encountered on our educational experiences.

Accommodation

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3 to 4 star properties that are centrally located, atmospheric, and reliable and where we have seen a good track record with traveller satisfaction over many years.

In various parts of Asia, we use quality lodges situated in natural environments. They offer comfortable, authentic accommodation that is clean, well maintained with good facilities and the best choice for the location that they are in.

Traditional style ryokans offer travellers a true taste of Japanese culture, sleeping on comfortable ‘futon’ bedding, laid out on tatami mat floors in wonderfully minimalistic rooms. Modified by sliding rice paper partitions, shoes are always left at the entrance upon entering these serene spaces.

Stay on board a traditional ‘junk’ boat, built entirely of aromatic wood with style and comfort that create the perfect balance of modern convenience and traditional Asian ambience. Cabins are twin share with private facilities. Features vary by vessel; however they may include a viewing platform, dining halls, panoramic windows and a library.

Enjoy fully supported camping with quality two person tents erected in scenic wilderness settings, a dining tent and a toilet tent with a sit toilet. Our crew looks after all logistics including food preparation as we focus on keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.

During homestays, a local family opens their home providing wonderful insight into the local culture, cuisine and lifestyle. Expect simple but clean and comfortable communal lodgings with shared bathrooms and a warm reception from your hosts.

A ger is a circular felt tent used by the nomadic people of Mongolia and sometimes in Central Asia. Spacious with comfortable beds, our gers allow you to experience ‘life on the steppe’ as you interact with a local family. In the evening, candles illuminate the gers providing an atmospheric night time experience.

12 Top Student Travel Destinations + Why Travel in College

Posted on Last updated: September 22, 2023

If you are looking for the best student travel destinations , we have compared some of the best here! Students generally want places that are budget-friendly and have plenty of cheap activities for young people, parties, other young people/students, and adventurous things to do. So these holiday destinations for students combine a bit of all the above.

You might have heard a variant of the saying, “ The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” The essence of exploring other countries and cultures, especially for researchers, could not have been worded better. In fact, according to a WYSE survey , 86% of people claimed that student vacation trips in their younger years developed their curiosity in and out of the classroom.

I couldn’t agree more – my time traveling as a college student truly changed my life and streamlined my path to being a full-time travel blogger today by not only teaching me more about the world but introducing to me a new lifelong passion. Traveling or studying abroad is one of the most important things you can do while studying!

This article informs you about the secrets to combining journeys to top international travel destinations with schooling with some of the best cheap places to travel for students. But before that, how beneficial are trips for students?

Student Travel destinations all over the world

Help for College Students While Traveling

One fear for students who want to travel is combining hectic schoolwork and educational travel hours. It’s hard to make sure to get your work done while on the road, trying to experience different cultures firsthand.

Luckily, these days, there are several companies offering an essay writer service that can help students to get any paper in time for their deadline. An experienced writer is assigned to provide professional academic writing to college students needing writing assistance. This is the perfect crutch to have while traveling and studying at the same time – and keep grades up!

There are also tons of helpful travel apps to help students know about the best things to do in each destination, know where to stay, or meet other travelers. Having apps to plan itineraries, meet travelers, or keep track of expenses is another way to help students save time.

How Traveling Enhances Students’ Educational Experiences

The importance of an educational trip for students cannot be overemphasized. Apart from the lifelong memories and fun, traveling is one of the best steps toward holistic character development. Learn about some life lessons you learn from staying in hostels , and how moving abroad can teach you more than any class possibly could (from my own experience)!

Promotes Individual Responsibility

When away from home, it becomes up to a pupil to abide by personal convictions on right and wrong. Without a familiar support system to fall back on, they become aware of what they can achieve alone. This allows the student to take note of areas that can and should be improved, and learn to be comfortable alone (which is huge).

Helps Embrace Diversity

Many of the best student travel destinations involve foreign countries. Wandering makes learners more welcoming of diversity in ideas, practices, philosophies and understanding of different belief systems. It helps them appreciate the world as an integral whole rather than a small, solitary segment.

Enhances Language Learning

It’s always a bit of a shock traveling to an area of a different language for the first time, especially when you cannot communicate with everyone. There will always be the need to learn new vocabulary and, at least, be able to engage in basic communication in another language.

A study by the Annals of Neurology reveals that bilingual individuals have better focus and higher general intelligence than their unilingual counterparts. Traveling as a student can jump-start the process!

Improves Social Skills

One often ignored aspect of how traveling is amazing for students is the way it improves tact. Student travelers stand a better chance of thriving in the real world through social intelligence than through mere book smarts. The ability to read social cues, understand people’s emotions, and manage relationships is TRULY as important as good grades.

Builds Confidence

As a by-effect of its several other benefits, traveling the world also boosts pupils’ confidence. Handling unexpected situations, improvising through dilemmas, and increasing self-awareness and people skills, especially in a foreign country, will make anyone comfortable in their skin. Confidence can then be transferred to other aspects of the student’s life, guaranteeing academic excellence.

Anyway – I think I made my point. Here are some of the best options for student travel destinations these days.

12 Top Student Travel Destinations

So here are the domestic AND international student travel destinations I recommend for a trip while studying. These are all cheap holiday destinations for students and also offer more than that!

Barcelona is a great destination for students

Spain is one of the fantastic all-around student holiday destinations that is cheap, beautiful, and full of culture and amazing landscapes (and parties).

Barcelona is a massive student city which is also one of my favorite cities in the world. Barcelona mixes incredible culture and history with beach life, outdoor activities , cheap bars, clubs, and a laid-back lifestyle. It’s also a great place to teach English if you want a side hustle. Barcelona is also an awesome and popular place to study abroad.

But we also have Madrid, which is cheaper with great nightlife and food. Ibiza and Majorca are favorite islands destinations in the Mediterranean, with great beaches and parties. Andalucia is known to be the cheapest area of Spain with a deep Spanich culture – prepare for tapas, wine, and late nights especially in the capital Seville. Spain is an all-around great student travel destination!

Thailand beaches of Krabi woman on swing

Thailand is one of the best student travel destinations for many reasons, and a fantastic jumping-off point for affordable and simple travel in Asia. Thailand is one of the most-visited Southeast Asian countries where English is widely spoken, and transportation is well-worn and easy to figure out – all of which are great for young students.

Thailand is one of the cheapest places to travel as a student and is full of backpackers traveling on a shoestring, making the most of their budget, exploring, and partying. It has a vibrant culture, delicious food, and some of the most incredible and diverse landscapes around.

From the mountains of Chiang Pai to the backpacker vibes of Pai, to the incredible bustle of Bangkok, to the stunningly scenic southern islands… Thailand is a must!

Albanian Riviera - a cheap affordable trvel destination in Europe

Albania is a great student travel destination because it has beaches that rival those of Croatia and Italy for a fraction of the price. Albania is regularly mentioned as one of the most scenic countries in Europe, with picturesque coasts and coves, and dramatic mountains. Come here to experience delicious food traditional villages, and relaxation on the beach.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of the best student travel destinations

Puerto Rico is an awesome option for student holiday destinations that aren’t a continent away (for American students). You dont need a passport to visit Puerto Rico from the USA, but this beautiful island offers a completely different culture, language, and architecture from a lot of America.

Puerto Rico is fairly affordable and offers cheap hostels for students and travelers from all over the world, and you can enjoy that Caribbean sun after only a short flight!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Bourbon St, New Orleans party

New Orleans is a fantastic domestic student travel destination because you can experience a rich culture without even leaving the country! There’s TONS to do in New Orleans, from the many museums to the French Quarter to drinking a bit too much on Bourbon Street.

There are a few universities here, so the vibe is young and outgoing. Mardi Gras and Halloween are epic times to be in NOLA, although it’s tons of fun year-round. There are also some affordable hostels that won’t break the bank as much as hotels here will.

Aerial view of Sydney harbor at sunset

Australia might be far away from it all, but it offers a whole range of awesome perks for student travelers. Australia is by far the best place to have a working holiday or even solo travel in Australia.

If you get a working holiday visa (available to those under 30-35, depending on country of origin), you can live and work in Australia and make some of the best wages in the world! It’s also a great place to study abroad, where the culture is similar yet distinctly different.

The country is massive and diverse in landscape. Many young people like to rent or buy a car to road trip around the country and visit hotspots like Sydney , Melbourne , the Great Ocean Road , Adelaide, Uluru + Northern Territory (Outback), Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Fraser Island , Byron Bay, and more.

Cliffs of Moher Ireland

Ireland is a great student travel destination or first-time travel destination for those who want a familiar language but plenty of culture and scenery. Ireland is a small and easily traveled country full of incredible landscapes, such as the cliffs of Moher.

Party in Dublin’s Temple Bar with a pint of Guinness, or do a road trip to smaller charming towns like Cork, Killarney, and Limerick to learn some of the ancient (and not so ancient) history of the area and taste local meals. Many students even end studying abroad or even living in Ireland.

beautiful jungles of Costa Rica trqavel destination

Costa Rica is one of the safest Central American countries that offers an absolute abundance of adventure activities. Costa Rica is not the cheapest, but it makes up for it in the sheer amount of awesome things to do (and affordable flights from the USA).

Costa Rica has an affordable and social hostel scene full of young people to meet from around the world. It is bordered by the Caribbean and the Pacific (and popular for surfing), with beautiful jungles, hikes, and volcanoes in the center. There are some unique things to do and even some top-notch music festivals like Envision.

Visit India as a student cheap student travel destinations

India can be one of the most relaxing of most intense travel experiences of your life depending on where you go! In Delhi and Mumbai, it is indeed overwhelmingly busy, but you will get a high dose of culture quickly. In places like Goa and Kerala , you can relax on the beach and live a slow pace of life.

One thing that is constant in India, however, is just how affordable it is. India is one of the best student travel destinations because the cost of living is extremely cheap compared to the US and it has one of the most historic and beautiful cultures in the whole world.

Panama City Beach, Florida

Panama City Bech Florida - spring break destination

I couldn’t leave Panama City Beach off of this list, as it’s known as the spring break capital of the world ! With miles of beautiful beaches and lots of EPIC parties just for students, this is a perfect student travel destination where you can experience tropical beaches without leaving the country.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest city at night one of the cheap places to travel as a student

For one of the cheapest student travel destinations in Europe, Budapest is a clear standout. Hungary is an incredible country with a deep history and culture, and Budapest puts it all on show. With the ‘Buda’ and ‘Pest’ sides of the river, students can learn all about European history and marvel at palaces, cathedrals, museums and viewpoints while exploring.

Budapest also has one of the best and cheapest party scenes in Europe, with some famous party hostels for a few euros a night to their iconic ruin bars. Sziget Festival is also one of the best in the world. This is a great place for students to travel, have a great time, and definitely not break the bank.

Macchi Picchu Peru bucketlist travel destination

For those itching for a South American adventure, Peru is a great option for culture, budget-friendliness, and landscapes. Peru is also a diverse country stretching from the jungles of the Amazon to the deserts of Lima to the archaeological wonder and mountains of Cuzco (and Machu Picchu).

There are so many different landscapes to experience here, and they’re well-connected by busses. Hostels and meals are extremely cheap in Peru, making it easy to budget less than $20-$30 a day here.

Budget-Friendly Accommodations and Transportation Options

Finding affordable accommodations and transportation options is crucial for student travelers on a budget. Luckily, Asia offers a wide range of choices that won't break the bank. When it comes to accommodations, hostels are often the go-to choice for students. These budget-friendly options not only provide a place to sleep but also offer opportunities to meet fellow travelers from around the world. Many hostels in Asia have communal areas where you can socialize and share travel tips with other like-minded individuals. For even more savings, consider staying in guesthouses or homestays. These options allow you to experience local culture firsthand while keeping costs down. Plus, they often come with added perks such as home-cooked meals or guided tours by your hosts. In terms of transportation, public buses and trains are typically the most economical way to get around in Asia. Not only do they offer affordable fares, but they also provide an opportunity to see more of the country's landscapes and interact with locals along the way. For shorter distances within cities, consider using tuk-tuks or local taxis instead of touristy private cars or rideshare services. Negotiating prices beforehand can help ensure you're getting a fair deal. To save even more money on transportation expenses, try walking or cycling whenever possible. This not only allows you to explore at your own pace but also gives you a chance to stumble upon hidden gems that might be missed when traveling by car. Remember to always research your options ahead of time and compare prices across different platforms before making any bookings. By being flexible with your accommodation choices and opting for cost-effective transportation methods, you'll be able to stretch your student travel budget further while still having an incredible experience exploring all that Asia has to offer!

Must-try Food and Drinks in Each Country

When it comes to experiencing a new culture, one of the best ways is through its food and drinks. Asia offers an array of culinary delights that are sure to please any student traveler's palate. From tangy street food to exotic fruits, each country in Asia has its own unique flavors to offer. In Thailand, don't miss out on trying Pad Thai, a stir-fried noodle dish packed with flavor and topped with peanuts and lime. Wash it down with a refreshing Thai iced tea, made with black tea, condensed milk, and spices. Japan is known for its sushi and ramen. Sample fresh sushi at a local fish market or try authentic ramen noodles in one of Tokyo's bustling eateries. Pair your meal with some sake or green tea for the complete Japanese experience. Indonesia boasts mouthwatering dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Gado-Gado (vegetable salad). Be sure to try Babi Guling (roast pig) if you're feeling adventurous! For something sweet, indulge in Es Cendol - a coconut milk-based dessert with palm sugar syrup and jelly-like pandan noodles. Vietnam offers delicious options such as Pho Bo (beef noodle soup) or Banh Mi (a baguette filled with various meats and veggies). And don't forget about Vietnamese coffee – strong brewed coffee served over ice with condensed milk! South Korea is famous for its Bibimbap (mixed rice bowl) which combines vegetables, meat, eggs, and spicy sauce. To quench your thirst while exploring Seoul's streets, try Soju – a traditional Korean alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice or barley. Finally, Malaysia is home to diverse cuisines influenced by Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures. Try Nasi Lemak (a fragrant coconut rice dish), Char Kway Teow (stir-fried flat noodles), and Roti Canai (flaky bread served with curry). To cool off, enjoy some Teh Tarik (pulled tea) or Cendol (shaved ice with coconut milk and palm sugar). No matter which country you visit in Asia, be sure to try the local specialties and immerse yourself in the vibrant food culture. You never know what delicious dishes and drinks you may discover!

Cultural and Historical Experiences for Students

Cultural and historical experiences are an essential part of student travel in Asia. Exploring the rich heritage and traditions of different countries can provide valuable insights and broaden students' perspectives. One must-visit destination for history buffs is China, with its iconic Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, and Forbidden City. Students can immerse themselves in ancient Chinese culture by visiting historic temples such as the Temple of Heaven or learning about traditional practices like calligraphy. In Japan, students can delve into the country's fascinating history through visits to landmarks like Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera temple or Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. They can also engage with Japanese art forms such as tea ceremonies or watch a traditional kabuki performance. Thailand offers unique cultural experiences too, with its ornate temples like Wat Arun and vibrant festivals like Songkran. Students can learn about Thai Buddhism, explore bustling markets, or even participate in a Thai cooking class to appreciate the local cuisine. India boasts a wealth of historical sites such as the Taj Mahal in Agra and Jaipur's Amber Fort. Students have the opportunity to witness colorful festivals like Diwali or Holi while immersing themselves in ancient traditions through yoga retreats or Ayurvedic spa treatments. Vietnam provides a glimpse into its tumultuous past through visits to Ho Chi Minh City's War Remnants Museum and Hanoi's Hoa Lo Prison Museum. Additionally, students can explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Hoi An Ancient Town or take part in homestays with ethnic minority communities for immersive cultural exchanges. From China’s The Forbidden City to Thailand’s Grand Palace, studying abroad in Asia is a history student’s dream come true.

Asian nations are becoming more popular among students looking to study abroad, with China and Japan both amongst the top 10 nations for foreign student enrollment. And those opportunities offer a chance to immerse yourself in history few of your peers will ever get to experience.

Here are 17 historical sites you must see while studying abroad in Asia.

MORE FROM WORLD STUDENT TRAVEL

Visit the The Grand Palace – Bangkok Thailand

This architectural and garden paradise features several structures, the highlight of which is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Perhaps Thailand’s most sacred shrine, a fragment of the Buddha’s body is allegedly still contained in the temple. Want to see more? Wat Arun – or The Temple of the New Dawn – is nearby, and it’s one of the best places you’ll ever watch a sunset.

See The Terracotta Army – Xi’an, China

This incredible set of sculptures was assembled near the tomb of Emperor Qin, with the idea the sculptures would protect him in the afterlife. Whether or not you believe that plan worked, you can visit the museum that now displays many of the more than 8,000 sculpted warriors, chariots and horses that have been unearthed to date in Xi’an. Even though this UNESCO World Heritage site’s wonders were created 2,200 years ago, the Terracotta Army wasn’t actually discovered until 1974.

Walk the city of Gyeongju, South Korea

The best nickname on the list, the “museum without walls” is home to relics dating back over 1,000 years. Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple have both been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Still a significant city in modern South Korea, Gyeongju was the capital of the kingdom of Silla – which ruled a majority of the Korean peninsula – for roughly 1,000 years until the 10th century.

See the Longmen Grottoes – Luoyang, China

If you’re a student of sculpture, this is your spot. The well-preserved Longmen Grottoes – with their stone carvings dating back to the fourth century – are an early artistic marvel. Heavily influenced by Buddhism, the caves feature tens of thousands of statues, including the 57-foot-tall Vairocana Buddha. The area is one the true artistic marvels of Asia.

Take in Ayutthaya Historical Park – Ayutthaya, Thailand

The palaces and temples of what was Thailand’s capital until the mid-18th century are a great reason to take this short trip from Bangkok. More than 100 towers and temples dot the city, along with thousands of Buddhist statues. The city was considered one of the power centers of Asia for over 400 years until the Ayutthaya Kingdom was overrun by the Burmese Army in 1767.

Visit Hoa Lò Prison – Hanoi, Vietnam

This infamous prison was originally established by French colonists before it became one of the most notable sites of the Vietnam War from an American perspective. Known colloquially as the “Hanoi Hilton” – where Senator John McCain spent parts of his five-plus years as a prisoner of war – most of the prison complex has since been demolished and repurposed. However, students and tourists alike can still walk through the museum that sits on the site, which includes some preserved sections of the prison, including a guillotine room.

See the old city of Sukhothai – Sukhothai, Thailand

Bring your nice camera when you visit the Sukhothai, which is both a history lesson and a student photographer’s paradise. Once you’re there, you’ll find history lessons and captivating photo ops everywhere you turn, as the city packs nearly 200 ruins into roughly 27 square miles. That includes 26 temples – among them the impressive Wat Mahathat – and the ruins of the royal palace.

Explore The Forbidden City – Beijing, China

This walled-off enclave in Beijing – which was home to Chinese emperors for more than 500 years – now welcomes more tourists annually than any other site on Earth. It’s huge, too. Consisting of nearly 1,000 buildings and spanning 70 acres. The Hall of Supreme Harmony is the most notable attraction, with its ornate throne room and dragon architecture. (Seriously, if you like dragons, this is a must-visit on your study abroad journey.)

Navigate the Cu Chi Tunnels – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

To fully understand Vietnam’s wartime history, students need to go underground. The Cu Chi Tunnels are a 75-mile network of passages the Vietnamese used to stage attacks, run communications and resupply troops during the Vietnam War. The tunnels are most notable for how the Viet Cong used them during the 1968 Tet Offensive.

student travel asia

Leap from the Kiyomizu-dera – Kyoto, Japan

OK, don’t really do that. The expression “jump off the stage at Kiyomizu” refers to the idea that anyone surviving a 43-foot high leap off this historic temple’s balcony would have their wish granted. (This practice was banned in the late 1800s.) This eighth-century Buddhist temple – built into the foothills of Mount Otowa overlooking Kyoto – is one of the Eastern world’s most visually fascinating places. Visit at sunset or during one of the temple’s night illuminations for stunning views of the city. When you’re not looking away from the building, you’ll also find architectural highlights like centuries-old sculptures and a man made waterfall.

Walk The Great Wall of China – Beijing, China

The one item on this list you’ve absolutely heard of, even if you’ve never left your hometown, The Great Wall of China is absolutely worth the visit for any history student. The first sections of this 13,170-mile structure were built in the 7th century B.C. to keep out nomadic groups coming from the north. But the most famous sections were completed as late as the 1600s. Don’t know which part to visit? Start your planning by looking at trips to the Badaling (though it gets extremely crowded) or Mutianyu sections.

student travel asia

Walk the historic city of Malacca, Malaysia

Malacca has preserved much of the spirit that made it perhaps the most important trading port in Southeast Asia in the 1600s. The main attraction is Jonker Street in the city’s Chinatown. It’s a bustling stretch of stores, food stalls and live music that tourists and students won’t be able to resist. In a change up from most of the sites you’ll visit, buildings from when the Portuguese and Dutch controlled trade in the city comprise some of its most popular historic attractions.

Explore the Red Fort – Delhi, India

Four hundred years of prominent events in Asian history have run through this hybrid fortress-palace. Built in the 1630s, it was the final home of the Mughal Empire which ruled over India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Its large red retaining walls are among the only parts of the structure that haven’t been looted or damaged since.

student travel asia

Marvel at The Imperial City – Hue, Vietnam

Built in 1801, this walled-off area inside Hue was the capital of Vietnam from the start of the Nguyen Dynasty until French rule in the latter half of the 19th century. The enclosed city is known for its colorful architecture, including the Can Thanh Palace and East Bastion gate. Bonus: The Imperial City is just a 15-minute drive away from the Thiên Mu Pagoda, a historically important and visually impressive seven-story Buddhist temple built in 1601 that was a popular organizing site for civil and political actions.

Explore the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum – Hiroshima, Japan

The site of the world’s first atomic bomb strike hosts more than 1 million visitors every year and is a must for any student of World War II. It has sections dedicated to life in the city before the bombing, along with a detailed chronicling of the decimation of the attack – how the blast and subsequent heat and radiation affected structures and nature – plus items that were discovered in the aftermath.

Take in The War Memorial of Korea – Seoul, South Korea

The sprawling memorial and museum in the nation’s capital – just 35 miles from the DMZ between North and South Korea – is intended to be a monument promoting peace. It hosts an abundance of military equipment used in the wars – including planes and tanks – along with a limousine once used by then-North Korean leader Kim Il Sung.

Marvel at the Taj Mahal – Agra, India

One of the seven wonders of the world, you grew up reading about it in your history books, so you might as well take in the awe of the world’s most famous mausoleum in person while studying abroad. Built by an estimated 22,000 laborers and 1,000 elephants to house the tomb of an emperor’s wife, the Taj Mahal now hosts more than 6 million visitors a year. Bonus: The Taj Mahal is just a 30 minute walk along the Yamuna River from one of India’s other famous landmarks, the Agra Fort, which preceded the Red Fort as the home of the Mughal Empire.

Skyline of Tbilisi, Georgia

These are the best places to travel as a student this summer

From the price of a beer to the price of a hostel, this study evaluates all the student essentials

Liv Kelly

Just because you want to travel on a budget, it doesn’t mean your opportunities are limited – there’re plenty of affordable travel destinations to visit this year .

And the same goes for the most budget-reliant demographic of society: students. Though studying often means your bank account really takes a beating, there are plenty of places you can head to for some not-so-spenny holidays, and UNiDAYS have brought us a round-up.

The platform’s 2024 index study has evaluated everything from hostel prices to beer prices, as well as safety rating, average meal cost, the price of a one-way transport ticket, the number of group activities, and the population of international students.

So, where ranked as the best place to travel as a student for this year? That would be Tbilisi , the lovely Georgian capital, which scored 7.32 out of 10. The average cost of a pint here is just £1.87 (€2.19), and the majority of its attractions are pretty close together, making it easy to explore the city on foot.

In second place, it was Lisbon , which ranked well for safety, and in third, it’s Yerevan in Armenia aka ‘the Pink City’ – a meal here costs just £7.18 (€8.41). However, this list is by no means just a cheap-sheet. Reykjavik claims spot number five, and though it’s notoriously unaffordable, you can’t argue that those geothermal pools look like a pretty good spot to detach from your exam stress.

Here are the best places to travel as a student in Europe

  • Tbilisi, Georgia
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Yerevan, Armenia
  • Prague , Czechia
  • Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Istanbul , Turkiye
  • Madrid , Spain
  • Belgrade, Serbia
  • Vilnius, Lithuania
  • Zagreb , Croatia

Did you see that these are the European cities with the cheapest (and most expensive) pints ?

Plus: This European city has been named the world’s most walkable .

I'm a college student studying abroad. I'm shocked at how many luxury trips my classmates take.

  • I was excited to study abroad in Florence and to take small, cheap trips while abroad.
  • My classmates are not traveling cheaply; they are flying to luxury places like Dubai and the Alps.
  • I wonder if they are just doing it for social media, but I'm still enjoying my time abroad.

Insider Today

As a third-year college student attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, I jumped at the chance to study abroad . Trading in a semester of snow and freezing temperatures for beautiful architecture and centuries-old art was a no-brainer.

I was so excited that I filled out the application to study in Florence nearly a year before the day I would depart. Four months in Florence, Italy, was comparable to the cost of a semester at my state school . After talking to my parents and counselor, I believed the cultural experience and travel opportunities were worth it.

I knew that when I arrived, I would have to budget when traveling —doing so through communal hostel stays and low-cost airlines. I was prepared for overstuffed backpacks and bus tickets; upon arrival, though, it became clear that pinching pennies was not on everyone's agenda.

The other students are jet-setting every weekend to expensive locations

The first few days in Florence were comparable to a freshman welcome week. The time was full of activities, including hikes, dinners, and other various ventures to get students to meet one another. My roommates and I attended one of the dinners to make connections before classes began.

Standing among groups of strangers , I expected to converse about majors and hometowns; however, I witnessed a quiet competition between students on who would be going to the most places in the coming months.

Comments such as "I have every weekend planned and booked" or "I would go, but I've already been" were stacked on top of one another as my peers attempted to one-up each other. At this time, I had a total of zero trips planned. When caught in these conversations, I felt oddly pressured to also fill my calendar each weekend, accompanied by the feeling of stress due to not being able to afford travel every five days. I feared I would be left behind.

Related stories

I've been here for over two months, and this conversation hasn't ended. Every Monday, I hear whispers about where my peers had jet-setted to days before. Places like Dubai and Morocco have been mentioned, leaving me just as shocked as that first dinner. I knew studying abroad was a privilege before getting here, but "a weekend in Dubai " was not what I expected.

Nobody is 'roughing it' like I thought they would be

My spring break was only three weeks into the start of the semester, and this was when I decided to take my first trip. When booking, I scoured sites, such as KAYAK and Skyscanner, but plane tickets and hotels were still extremely pricey. Eventually, my roommates and I decided to spend five days in Prague after finding affordable tickets on Ryanair. One of the greatest appeals of Prague was it was walkable, cheap, and had a good nightlife — my top three requirements as a traveling college student.

My three roommates and I booked a studio apartment for around $100 each for a total of five nights. It took us two trains, one bus, a plane, and some walking to get there, but the price was right. I was excited for the following week and felt satisfied with our trip and housing accommodations.

That was until I scrolled through Instagram to see my peers skiing in the Alps and skydiving in Copenhagen. It was almost unbelievable that the people I attend classes with could afford this style of travel while my school backpack was stuffed with a week's worth of clothes cause I opted out of the carry-on baggage fee Ryanair required.

I thought everyone at this stage made sacrifices when traveling, but I was mostly wrong.

I'm convinced people are traveling for the sake of their Instagram

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that anyone can experience a new country in the span of 48 hours.

I do know, however, that people are really good at making their time away look like the best time ever on my Instagram feed . It's as if they're collecting comments like postcards or putting another notch in their belts by showing one another how many stamps they have accumulated in their passports.

Traveling while studying abroad is a competitive sport with a large price tag that no one told me to train for.

I've learned that such comparisons defeat the purpose of traveling. Maybe I haven't flown on the best airlines or stayed in an oceanfront villa, but my experiences abroad have been enriching and allowed me to engage with other cultures. Best of all? I didn't have to spend much money, and my Instagram still looks good.

Generally, student life provides the unique opportunity to travel more freely. A common hurdle that students encounter while traveling is cost. This is particularly true for big-ticket expenses, like lodging.

If you’re eager to find affordable accommodations, here are sites where you can find student discount hotels and hostels on a budget.

Best websites for hostels and hotels at student discounts

Major travel platforms, such as Kayak and Expedia , can generally be a good starting point to find cheap hotels. However, there are sites designed specifically for students’ lifestyle, schedules and wallets that might land you a room more suited to your needs.

1. CheapOair

Although its name might suggest it offers cheap airfare only, students might also uncover hotel savings on CheapOair , too. It features lodging of all types, including affordable hotels and budget motels. It also has a dedicated page for last-minute hotel deals for a spontaneous weekend getaway.

You can browse available accommodations on the CheapOair website or on its mobile app. You also can call an agent at 845-848-0154 to explore your options and book your room.

UNiDAYS is a site dedicated to offering various student discounts from hotels, clothing stores, grocers, gyms and more.

To access these deals, you must be a current student and sign up to be a member online. Membership is free, but UNiDAYS might accept commissions on hotel bookings you make through its platform.

It partners with popular hotel and vacation rental sites to offer student members additional discounts. For example, if using UNiDAYS to book a room on Hotels.com, you might receive up to 40% off and an extra 8% off on hotels.

Hostelz gathers data from other booking sites so you can easily run price comparisons for your preferred room.

It pulls rates and traveler reviews from Hostelworld.com, Booking.com and Hostelclub.com. The platform offers the largest worldwide database of hostels, giving its customers access to a comprehensive list of available rooms around the world.

Searching its database is free, and according to the site, it offers an average savings of 10.6%, and up to 60% for some bookings. Its reviews show full transparency and aren’t guided by Hostelz’s commissions or screened by the hostels.

4. StudentUniverse

StudentUniverse is a site devoted to students and travelers under 30 years old that are from the U.S., the U.K., Australia and Canada. Its hotel database has more than 200,000 hotel and vacation properties worldwide, and students can access discounts of up to 60% off on hotel reservations.

The deals on StudentUniverse are exclusive for its members. To sign up, you’ll need to provide your name, date of birth, email address, and your school and expected graduation year.

When browsing available stays, keep in mind that the prices shown don’t include taxes and fees. Make sure you account for these added costs before finalizing your reservation.

Tips for finding student discount hotels

With so many details to work out, planning a trip on a shoestring budget might feel chaotic and costly. Taking some extra steps while sorting out logistics for your next stay can help you keep both to a minimum.

Stay flexible

If you’re on a tight budget or need a last-minute reservation, you’ll find more options by keeping an open mind. This includes check-in or checkout dates and room features.

The least glamorous room type at a hotel is likely its cheapest option. This might mean accepting a room with a tight square footage, a view of a parking structure or one that is close to a noisy elevator or staircase.

Call the hotel or hostel directly

Student hotel deal websites are a solid place to start your search for cheap stays; however, as a third-party aggregator (or online travel agency), these sites often tack on additional fees that add up.

Once you’ve found a room you like on a deals site, call the hotel or hostel directly to compare its rate for that room type.

You might be able to secure a reservation with the agent on the phone, or through the lodging’s website, at a lower total price.

Look up promos before checkout

Sometimes the hotel’s rates are about the same as the hotel’s student discount price. See if you can find extra discounts for the deal site you’re booking through.

If you’re booking the reservation around a major holiday, or are a new customer on the platform, you might find a promo code for an extra discount.

Book with a credit card

Using a credit card to pay for your stay offers additional benefits during and beyond your trip. Some will let you earn an unlimited 5% cash back for hotel reservations made in certain online travel booking portals.

Booking your hotel or hostel lodgings through a credit card also builds your credit history. Just ensure that you can afford repaying any purchases placed on the account to avoid accumulating debt. Before reserving your next accommodations, compare the best college student credit cards .

Don’t forget about safety

Finding cheap lodging can have the biggest impact on your travel budget, but cost savings should never compromise your personal safety. Do your due diligence by checking whether the building has secured entry during late hours and whether there’s on-site security personnel or cameras in common areas, like lobbies and hallways.

Also, read reviews of each hotel or hostel under consideration and what other students have to say about the surrounding area.

Hotels with student discounts, recapped

When you’re on a student budget, taking advantage of ways to travel affordably is essential. Using deal websites for student discount hotels is a good way to uncover a low-cost yet comfortable haven to return to during your trip.

China Is Committed to Resolving Maritime Disputes Through Talks, Official Says

QINGDAO, China (Reuters) -China remains committed to resolving maritime disputes with other countries through dialogue but will not allow itself to be "abused," a top military official said at a meeting of senior foreign naval officials in the port city of Qingdao on Monday.

The sea should not be an arena where countries can flex their "gunboat muscles", added Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and China's second-highest-ranking military official.

"Reality has shown that those who make deliberate provocations, stoke tensions, or support one side against another for selfish gains will ultimately only hurt themselves," Zhang said during the opening ceremony of the Western Pacific Naval Symposium at the upscale St Regis hotel.

The comments were an apparent reference to growing tensions in the South China Sea, where Washington treaty ally Manila is in a fraught standoff with Beijing over the strategic waterway, a potential flashpoint for U.S-China relations.

Zhang also told the gathered delegates that "carrying out maritime containment, encirclement and island blockades will only plunge the world into a vortex of division and turbulence."

The event overlaps with annual U.S.-Philippines large-scale joint military drills, which begin on Monday and will be held outside Philippine territorial waters for the first time.

Tensions are particularly high around the Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea, where Manila has accused Beijing of "harassment", including the use of water cannons against Philippine vessels.

The symposium is a rare opportunity for countries with opposing regional interests to exchange views. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Stephen Koehler is attending from the United States. Other delegations include Australia, France, India, Russia and Britain.

The Philippines did not attend despite being a member nation of the forum.

"This is a very good opportunity to hold bilateral talks with each navy - not only on AUKUS, but on broader maritime topics," said Captain Takuo Kobayashi, a senior official with the Japanese naval delegation. "The Chinese Navy are building up their muscles in the South China Sea quickly, so I'm paying a lot of attention to the Chinese Navy's developments."

Participants will hold closed-door talks on topics such as updating the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea, a set of guidelines meant to de-escalate tensions between militaries at sea.

They will also vote on the creation of a new working group on unmanned systems with the People's Liberation Army Navy as the coordinator, according to the forum agenda.
