Tourism Slogans for Every Country in the World: From Catchy to Cringeworthy
You guys — I have gone down a rabbit hole. 🤦🏻♀️ I started searching for country tourism slogans to include on a Country Quick Facts Infographic I am creating for my newly-designed country category pages (check out the test run for Colombia here !).
Before I knew it, I had compiled a comprehensive list of the tourism slogans for every country and territory in the world! So I decided to rank the Top 20 Best and Worst tourism slogans just for kicks. And I also threw in a few tourism logos while I was at it!
It was interesting to see what catchy (or not-so-catchy) taglines countries have come up with to lure tourists, especially since (at the time of this writing) US citizens are banned from all but a handful of these countries due to the coronavirus.
Some countries opted for the easy go-to of alliteration (“Brilliant Barbados”; “Beautiful Burundi”; “Pristine Paradise Palau”; “Timeless Tuvalu”) or assonance (“Epic Estonia”; “Incredible India”). Other countries got a little more creative (Djibouti: “Djibeauty”; Slovenia: “I feel sLOVEnia”; Ukraine: “It’s all about U”).
A few countries decided to make some bold claims (“Dominican Republic Has It All”; “All You Need Is Ecuador”; Honduras: “Everything Is Here”), while smaller, lesser-known countries opted to just tell you where they are located (Andorra: “The Pyrenean Country”; Bosnia & Herzegovina: “The Heart of SE Europe”).
Without further ado, here is my ranking (in alphabetical order) of the Top 20 Best and Worst Country Tourism Slogans. Let’s get the cringeworthy taglines out of the way first before moving onto the catchy ones….

What Is France’s Tourism Slogan?
By Anna Duncan
France is a country that offers an unbeatable mix of history, culture, and natural beauty. The country is renowned for its fashion, food, wine, art, architecture and much more.
It’s no surprise that France is one of the most visited countries in the world. In fact, France has been the most visited country in the world for years with over 89 million visitors in 2019 alone. One secret to France’s tourism success is its catchy slogan.
France’s tourism slogan is “Rendez-vous en France” which translates to “Let’s meet in France”. This slogan was created by Atout France, the French tourism development agency responsible for promoting French tourism to the world.
What Does The Slogan Mean?
The slogan “Rendez-vous en France” encourages people from all over the world to come to France and experience all that this beautiful country has to offer. It invites people to discover its rich culture, cuisine, art, history and much more.
How Effective Is The Slogan?
The slogan has been a successful tool for promoting tourism in France since it was launched in 2009. According to Atout France, the slogan has helped increase visitor numbers by 40% since its launch.
Why Is The Slogan Effective?
The slogan is effective because it speaks directly to potential visitors and creates an emotional connection with them. It invites them to come and experience something unique that they cannot find anywhere else.
The use of “Rendez-vous” makes it sound intimate and personal . The word “Rendez-vous” implies meeting up with someone or something special – in this case – a unique travel experience.
The use of “en France” highlights where this experience can be found. This phrase helps create a sense of place and adds to the emotional appeal of the slogan.
In conclusion, “Rendez-vous en France” is a catchy and effective slogan that captures the essence of France as a unique travel destination. The slogan has been successful in attracting visitors to the country and will continue to be a valuable tool for promoting French tourism for years to come. So if you are looking for an unforgettable travel experience, make sure to “Rendez-vous en France”!

What Really Matters: The New Tourism Campaign by Atout France
Have you been missing trips to France? Are you tired of the armchair travel and virtual views forced on us by the pandemic lockdown? Isn’t it time to #ExploreFrance and rediscover the country you love?
The big, bold new French tourism campaign, recently announced by the Atout France tourism development agency , is tapping into this pent-up desire for travel.
France is set to reopen to international tourism starting June 9th, welcoming fully vaccinated international travelers including Americans and other non-EU nationals. To coincide with this bonne nouvelle , Atout France is launching the €10 million campaign to encourage European tourists to come to France and rediscover What Really Matters!
Prior to the pandemic, France was the most visited tourist destination in the world. But tourism has been decimated by the health crisis around the world; international arrivals in France fell by 74% last year compared to 2019, according to WTO. The health measures put in place to contain the Covid-19 pandemic have had a huge impact on the global economy, with tourism one of the most affected sectors.
Now with vaccination campaigns rapidly improving the health situation, France is gearing up to roll out the red carpet for its tourists once again. The new #ExploreFrance- What Really Matters tourism campaign aims to position France as the ideal destination for European tourists who, prior to the pandemic, represented over 75% of international visitors and are forecast to represent over 85% in 2021. Sectors to be highlighted include slow tourism, the great outdoors, culture and heritage, and lifestyle. For more information, see the video below.

He remained obsessed with travel; after getting a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and working as an administrator, He spent his vacations going to different countries around the globe studying language, touring, and volunteering. In 1994, he quit his job and lived in Russia as a volunteer English instructor. He discovered that he loved teaching languages. In 2004, he decided to make a living out of his travels and founded a community of people who love to travel just like him. He developed 5 three-hour classes about living and traveling long-term worldwide which he taught in over 50 adult education programs throughout the US. After his parents passed, he realized his dream of traveling around the world; cruising and touring some of the most remote places like the North Atlantic, Patagonia, and Oceania; and learning new languages (he knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Russian). Paul encourages everyone to learn foreign languages. He knows that it can be frustrating and slow but that anyone can learn a language if they put in the work and, most importantly, learning a language is well worth the time and effort because it opens up a whole new set of people, ideas, and cultures. He is currently spending the next chapter of his life in Mérida, México. He is excited about using this blog and his classes and workshops to inspire and equip fellow Fifty Plus Nomads with the language, cultural, and psychological skills necessary to be successful and happy long-term travelers and expats over 50.

Why is France the world’s leading tourist destination?
Tourism with a capital “t” was invented by the british in the 18th century with the “grand tour”. a traditional trip to europe undertaken mainly by the aristocratic elite, which is also the origin of the english word “tourist”. tourist activities were mainly reserved for a handful of the population until the 19th century. the advent of the railroad precipitated the development of tourism, and france knew how to play its assets., the beginnings of tourism in france..
Tourism in the modern sense of the term developed in the 19th century, notably with the creation of the first travel agency by Thomas Cook. From then on, France was the favorite destination of the first English tourists who travelled in large numbers to the “ French Riviera “.
The beginnings of tourism in France through the seaside
In 1841, Thomas Cook created the first travel agency. 15 years later, he organized for British tourists the first tourist circuit through Europe. The British use the term “French riviera”, “riviera” which means in Italian “a region characterized by the rough contact of the sea and the mountains”.
Since 1830, the city of Hyères has become a tourist destination and a renowned winter health resort for thermal cures. It was frequented in particular by the English who left an architectural imprint that is still visible today. Nice is also very popular, with its famous Promenade des Anglais, which owes its name to the fact that the English make Nice their favorite winter resort.
If France is so popular for seaside tourism, it is because of its geography. Indeed, from Bray-Dunes (Franco-Belgian border), through Hendaye (Franco-Spanish border) and up to Menton (Franco-Italian border), 923 communes share the 5,533 kms of metropolitan coastline: 3,830 kms along the Channel and the Atlantic and 1,703 kms on the shores of the Mediterranean.
The development of the railroad in the 1850’s allowed the service of seaside resorts and spas. Tourism became more democratic in France during the 20th century. The paid vacations in 1936 are the first steps of mass tourism.
Major changes in French tourism
The 20th century brought many changes in tourism and the first of these upheavals were the first paid vacations in 1936, a social reform of the Popular Front led by Léon Blum. For the first time, the employees have 15 days of paid vacations: the summer holidays had just been created. These are the first crowds, the first souvenir photos, the first reports on the beaches…
The under-secretary of state for the organization of leisure activities, Léo Lagrange, sets up with the railway companies the popular annual vacation ticket called “Lagrange ticket”. It will allow a large number of the population to travel. With the end of the Second World War, 2 million Parisians travelled in 1947, 3 million in 1948, 4 in 1949 and 5 in 1951.
The increase in purchasing power, the multiplication of cars and the development of social tourism are at the dawn of mass tourism. The French created a vacation culture, adopting the codes and practices of tourism: having a good time!
In 1950, the first Club Méditerranée village opened in Alcúdia, a small fishing hamlet in the Balearic Islands. It was inaugurated at the heart of the second phase in the evolution of tourism: consumerism and the demand for dream vacations.
< Sur la plage, 1959. ROBERT DOISNEAU / GAMMA-RAPHO – France Info Culture
Tourism has changed a lot since the 1950s. The demand for travel being strong, the tourist industry proposes an increasingly abundant offer and invests in increasingly large hotel complexes to accommodate more and more tourists at the expense of the environment. Today, professionals are proposing other ways to travel. There is more and more talk of solidarity or fair tourism, of respect for the environment and the populations. The development of e-tourism since 1998 with the development of the Internet has contributed to the evolution of consumer behavior by making them more and more competent in their research, and therefore more and more informed.
France’s tourist assets
France, because of its geographical diversity, its history and its culture, has been the world’s leading tourist destination for years.
France, at the crossroads of Europe
Due to its geographical position, France occupies a crossroads in the heart of Europe, it is a territory of passage to go from north to south of Europe. It is at the heart of the European tourist market and is the entry point to Europe for European stays for international tourists. Today, France is the most visited country in the world with over 89 million international tourist arrivals in 2018. It ranks third in the world in terms of revenue behind Spain and the United States of America with 55.5 million euros in 2018 ( Ministry of Economy, Finance and Recovery ). If France manages to stay so high in the world ranking, it is thanks to the eclecticism of its tourism proposal.
The richness of our cultural and natural heritage
France manages to keep the first place thanks to its diversity of geographical landscapes: sea, mountains, countryside, big cities… It has everything to please and can therefore offer all forms of tourism. This also explains the fact that many French people choose their country for their vacations.
For some years now, other forms of tourism have been developing, such as industrial tourism:
- Food, wine and spirits (60%)
- Arts and crafts (18%)
- The environment and energy (10%)
- The fashion and cosmetics sector (7%)
- Technological industries (5%)
This tourism allows a diversification of the offer of a territory and the creation of a new tourist sector in the field of leisure tourism and for business tourism, a great potential still little exploited. Through industrial tourism, we can find what has made France’s reputation: the richness of our oenogastronomic heritage, as well as our know-how in arts and crafts (especially in the luxury sector).
France also has a rich architectural heritage. Because of the richness and diversity of its heritage, 45 sites are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site s (39 cultural properties, 5 natural properties and 1 mixed property). This makes France the 4th country with the most UNESCO listed sites (2019 source).
Paris attracts a lot of foreign tourists: more than 30 million per year! The city makes you dream, the architecture, the museums, the Eiffel Tower, without forgetting Disneyland Paris, all these places make Paris a major destination for European tourists.
By its diversity, we can say that each French department is a tourist department with its gastronomic and cultural specialities, its natural beauties, its history. France is a country with many faces. It appeals to all audiences, all ages, which probably explains why France is the world’s leading tourist destination. Which destination to choose? Some regions have a strong “personality” because of their history, their geography, their language like Brittany, the Basque Country, Corsica, etc. Other regions are known for their natural beauty like the Luberon , an excellent idea for a Whitsun destination!

European Travel Slogans, Ranked from Least to Most Awesome
20 best european travel slogans.
American travelers love to hit the road, with 1.8 billion people taking a leisure trip in 2018. And these travels don't come cheap: $1.1 trillion — yes, trillion! — was spent on travel last year alone.
With 195 countries in the world all hoping to attract (and cash in on) those billions of tourists, government agencies spend their money on campaigns that display the best of what their countries have to offer.
Using videos, social media, and advertising in print and online, along with slogans designed to inspire, European nations in particular have worked hard to get your attention. We've ranked 20 of the most prominent marketing campaigns there in recent history, from least to most inspiring. See if you agree!
20. Move Your Imagination - Poland
At the 2010 Internationale Tourismus-Borse (ITB) travel show in Berlin, Polish tourism officials shared a video with animated characters to drum up interest in visiting their country. The characters were so popular that they were then used in collateral around the world to show off what the Poles already know: There's plenty to see in the country.
Today, the animated characters are no more, but that campaign's tagline — "Move Your Imagination" — has been adopted as Poland's official travel slogan.
Verdict: What, exactly, does "Move Your Imagination" mean? Does it say anything specific about what makes Poland special? Or make you want to visit, which is ostensibly the whole point? Nah.
Be Inspired: Poland – Move Your Imagination
19. Think Hungary: More Than Expected
In 2012, Hungary welcomed 8.8 million tourists. The next year, in an effort to flaunt how awesome the country is, officials launched a promotional video campaign — and boosted that number to 9.3 million people.
Today, the word is fully out, with nearly 13 million people enjoying the spoils of Hungary last year. There is more than expected in Hungary — like, to start, wineries, fabulous architecture, national parks, historic cities and excellent nightclubs.
Verdict: "More Than Expected" seems to sell itself short. It's like admitting "We're not France, but we're better than you'd expect."
Be Inspired: Think Hungary: More Than Expected
18. Jump into Ireland
Ireland's promotional videos, first launched in 2015, attempt to lure Americans like St. Patrick lured snakes (except into the country, and not out). It's estimated that the extensive campaign built around the idea of "jumping right in" to the Emerald Isle has reached 255 million people.
That's a lot of potential visitors who've watched imagery of the country's green landscapes, charming towns and scenic waterfronts. (Of course, pints of beer have also been prominently featured.) And seemingly, the campaign has been a success; more than 10 million people visited Ireland in the last year alone.
Verdict: "Jump into Ireland?" Like a leprechaun jumping? Or the sheep in the ad? We think you can do better, Ireland.
Be Inspired: Jump into Ireland
17. Spain in Detail
Spain turned to social media to market its hidden gems, asking travelers to discover 12 distinct destinations' smallest details, and to tag #spainindetail when spotting something to win a prize.
This 2015 campaign may have worked too well, as 82.8 million people visited Spain last year , and cities like Barcelona are dealing with overtourism.
Verdict: This one's a cute concept, but outside of hidden gems, "Spain in Detail" doesn't hold any real meaning.
Be Inspired: Spain in Detail
16. Get Natural - Switzerland
With eco-tourism and adventure tourism on the rise, Switzerland decided to reach out to travelers with images of the country's natural wonders, promoting outdoor vacations.
The Get Natural campaign, launched in 2017, has included a series of cheeky videos, including a viral hit that showed an office worker shedding his inhibitions in the Swiss wild.
Designed to serve as inspiration for city-dwellers and nature-lovers alike, the campaign has been a success, increasing overnight stays in the country.
Verdict: Showcasing pretty pictures of Swiss' awesome natural scenery — including rock climbers sweeping the mountains — is a nice touch. But "Get Natural" just doesn't have the impact that other slogans on this list do.
Be Inspired: Switzerland: Get Natural
15. Arrive and Revive - Austria
The message for travelers is simple: Arrive in Austria, and you'll immediately begin to revive. The 2015 campaign allowed each area of Austria to showcase what it's renowned for, from the Alps to the charming cities, from the palaces to the mountain chalets.
The campaign has played an important role in an ongoing push to reach the American market. And thanks to continued video and social-media pushes, the number of Americans visiting has indeed been increasing year over year.
Verdict: We adore visiting Austria. But "Arrive and Revive"? Isn't a vacation anywhere supposed to revive us?
Be Inspired: Austria. Arrive and Revive
14. I Wish I Was in Finland
A decade ago, Visit Finland launched a social-media push in which they asked people to share photos of where they were along with "I wish I was in Finland" graphics. People responded so well, it became the basis for the country's ongoing travel campaign.
In 2019, Visit Finland's newest initiative allowed you to " Rent a Finn ." Ten Finns from around the country were selected as "happiness guides" following the 2019 World Happiness Report, which found Finland to be the happiest nation on Earth. These guides spent the summer showing lucky travelers around, letting them discover just why everyone in Finland is so happy all the time.
Verdict: While it is certainly catchy, how many people have ever uttered the line, "I wish I was in Finland"? France, we can see. The Greek Isles. A beach on the Mediterranean, definitely. But Finland? Not so much.
Be Inspired: I Wish I Was in Finland
13. Simply Inspiring - Germany
To promote the 16 different provinces of Germany in 2017, the government created the slogan "Simply Inspiring." Like other European nations, social media played a huge part in bringing in 13.5 million visitors .
This year, the country is continuing this campaign, along with the summertime #GermanSummerStories, which asks visitors to tag their summer vacation photos so others can be motivated to visit, too.
Verdict: Germany is, in fact/no question, inspiring. Heck, Walt Disney even used a German castle as inspiration for Disneyland's centerpiece castle. The slogan, however, doesn't quite inspire.
Be Inspired: Germany: Simply Inspiring
12. Find Your Great Britain
Keeping the "GREAT" in Great Britain, Visit Britain's new ad campaign originally launched in 2012, the same year the Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee.
It continues today, highlighting the not-so-obvious places to visit in Britain. In 2018, the campaign began asking travelers " What do you travel for? " on Visit Britain's website, connecting users to top and unique places in the country.
The campaign is listed as the government's " most ambitious international promotional campaign ever. " Verdict: "Find Your Great Britain" is simple but effective. And we especially love that these ads focus on real people for a more intimate look at the country. Who wouldn't want to share a laugh with the friendly-looking folks featured in this campaign?
Be Inspired: Find Your Great Britain
11. Find Your Epic - Wales
Before the "Find Your Great Britain" theme, Wales worked to bring tourists within its borders by placing a giant mirrored "Epic" somewhere in the country, then asking travelers to find it.
The art installation was moved around the nation throughout 2016, appearing on social media to show people what they were missing in Wales and inviting them to "Find Your Epic."
Verdict: This is such a cool concept that we're bummed it's not currently happening. Wales should keep this hide-and-seek game going!
Be Inspired: Find Your Epic: Visit Wales
10. A Spirit of Its Own - Scotland
Considering the country's official animal is a unicorn , it should come as no surprise that Scotland relishes its mysterious and mystical side with its slogan, "A Spirit of Its Own."
The country's first-ever global ad campaign launched in 2016 with videos accompanied by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra zooming in on mystical places like the Isle of Skye's fairy pools and the Isle of Lewis' Calanais Standing Stones (shown).
Verdict: Taunting us with places steeped in mystery and wonder will work every time.
Be Inspired: Scotland: A Spirit of Its Own
9. All Time Classic - Greece
One of Europe's oldest countries , Greece is revered for its history. During the 5th and 4th centuries BC, the Classical Greece era shaped the world's modern politics, architecture, literature, theater, scientific thought and philosophy. This is when Hippokrates founded modern medicine, Socrates established modern philosophy and Sophocles penned "Oedipus Rex" and "Antigone."
Harkening to its past has helped the country move into the future. The country is breaking travel records, with 33 million people visiting last year to see classical sites such as the Parthenon and Acropolis of Athens.
Verdict: Playing off its Classical Greece era, "All Time Classic" is the perfect travel slogan!
Be Inspired: Greece All Time Classic
8. Full of Life - Croatia
What better way to lure travelers than by musing about how our days should be filled with life, rather than our life filled with days? So true!
Croatia threw out its old slogan , "The Mediterranean as it once was," and began highlighting the more modern, active and adventurous side of the country with its "Full of Life" campaign in 2015. With nearly 20 million people visiting the nation, it appears there are plenty of people who are taking the campaign's inspiring words to heart.
Verdict: Out with the old and in with the new always works. This slogan is truly full of life.
Be Inspired: Croatia Full of Life
7. Rendez Vous en France
It's funny to think that a decade ago, France needed to rebrand itself in order to maintain its spot as one of the top destinations in the world. But it did, and the effort has most definitely worked: 90 million people visited the country in 2018.
France's slogan uses the commonly known French phrase rendez vous en France (meet you in France). The still-used logo features Marianne, the national symbol of the French Revolution, with letters that create her arms and body, and the colors of the French tricolor flag creating her hair.
Verdict: Demonstrating a clever play on words, illustration and colors, this is a great slogan and logo. Point goes to France.
Be Inspired: Rendez vous in France
6. Land of Stories - Czech Republic
For its first-ever campaign in 2012, CzechTourism targeted Millennials, known for seeking experiences, culture and a chance to interact with locals to immersive themselves in a country. "Land of Stories" was launched to invite potential visitors to create their own stories, while also learning tales from the nation's history.
The Czech Republic had been behind the Iron Curtain until 1989, but in the 30 years since, it has become a leading destination for foreign visits, welcoming 10.6 million people in 2018 — a record!
Verdict: We continue to tell stories from a trip long after it has ended. Offering a way to collect new stories is a great lure.
Be Inspired: Czech Republic: Land of Stories
5. Powered By Nature - Norway
Visit Norway knew to focus on the country's best assets when it launched its campaign in 2012.
"Powered by Nature" videos, billboards and ads highlight the beauty of the country's fjords, waterfalls, lakes, mountains and more. The country even fills its airports with images of people enjoying nature, inspiring you to get out there and experience the wonder for yourself.
Norway's land is so sparse that for every square mile there are about 35 people , making it one of the least densely populated countries in the world. Plus, Norway's electricity is powered 98 percent by renewable sources.
Verdict: As slogans go, this one fits Norway to a tee.
Be Inspired: Norway: Powered by Nature
4. Be Our Guest - Turkey
In case Turkey didn't give off the impression it really, really wanted you to come visit, perhaps its travel slogan provides a clue?
Focusing on places within the country that visitors may not have heard of, Turkey rolled out the welcome wagon and got what it wanted. Last year, it was flooded with nearly 40 million visitors.
Verdict: Welcoming us with open arms and getting the "Beauty and the Beast" song stuck in our heads? Clever. Very clever.
Be Inspired: Turkey: Be Our Guest
3. Made in Italy
So many fabulous things are made in Italy — from designer clothing to super-speedy sports cars, handcrafted leather to delicious wines — that it just made sense to create a travel campaign around the coveted words, "Made in Italy."
Launched in 2015, this program focused on culture and wellness, gastronomy and wine, medieval villages, mountains and parks, artistic cities, seas and lakes, and active getaways, all tailor-made for travelers.
Verdict: Not that we needed clever words to get us to go, but you have to admire this campaign's savvy play on words. Again, so many great things really are made in Italy!
Be Inspired: Made in Italy
2. I Feel sLOVEenia
Slovenia joined the world of travel marketing later than most of Europe, but when it did launch its new slogan in 2016, it filled it with "love."
This social-media campaign using the hashtag #ifeelsLOVEenia was the country's way of providing the world with 2 million reasons to visit. The hashtag was used by the tourism board, as well as locals and tourists alike to serve as ambassadors of Slovenian travel.
By 2018, Slovenia welcomed 8 percent more travelers and 10 percent more overnight stays than the year before. In the same year, the country began to showcase itself as a destination for 5-star experiences.
Verdict: Sharing the love really does make us want to feel it, too!
Be Inspired: I Feel sLOVEnia
1. The Original Cool - Holland
The Holland Marketing Alliance unveiled its slogan in 2013: "Holland. The Original Cool." Television commercials and YouTube videos feature the cool-as-a-cucumber chief-of-cool ambassador, Pim de Koel, who attempts to teach viewers how to be as rad as the Dutch.
Showcasing the best of The Netherlands, the slogan highlights cities from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, as well as its cultural attractions and people, to great effect — Vincent Van Gogh was certainly one cool cat!
Verdict: Teaching travelers how to be cool instead of just showing off the country's goods? Winner!
Be Inspired: Holland. The Original Cool

10 reasons why France is the ideal sustainable destination
1. camping is for everyone.
The French campsites offers opportunities for every budget and every type of holiday. Regardless if you are driving over in your motorhome, come packed with a tent, or you choose to hire a campsite chalet or go full out glamping. The 8000 camping sites are dotted all over the country, including sites along the various coastlines for beach holidays, near pretty towns and villages and also for slower holidays embracing nature and pausing to stop.
2. Protected natural habitats
Speaking of nature, since the launch of its very first national park in Isère, the Parc de la Bérarde, in 1913, France has embarked on a twin mission to safeguard and revive its natural habitats and biodiversity and boost local economies through sustainable tourism. Today, the country counts 11 national parks spanning 60,000km2, 54 natural regional parks and nine natural marine parks as well as 47 ‘Grands Sites’ welcoming around 32 million visitors each year.
3. UNESCO-listed savoir-faire
France’s wealth of natural wonders is second only to its cultural heritage, history and traditions . No fewer than 23 French celebrations, crafts and customs - among them alpinism, Britanny’s Fest-noz dance festival or the perfume-making techniques of Grasse - take pride of place on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
4. Slow tourism
A boon for eco-tourists and lovers of the great outdoors, France is crisscrossed by no fewer than 369 GR (Sentier de Grande Randonnée) hiking trails, including the iconic Chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle and the tour du Mont Blanc trek. The playground of seasoned cyclists, the Hexagon is also bisected by nine (out of 15) trans-European cycle routes; chief among them the Vélodyssée, Loire à Vélo and Viarhôna.
5. Must-try produce and local specialities
France isn’t nicknamed the “land of a thousand cheeses” for nothing. Every last corner of the country is brimming with homegrown produce and its art de la table is the envy of the world. From the red label and ‘Organic Agriculture’ stamp to the AOP and AOC appellations, countless designations ensure the protection and guarantee the origin and traceability of its cheeses, renowned wines and other gourmet staples.
6. Sustainable food
An increasing number of restaurateurs are now adopting a more sustainable approach to gastronomy by reducing food miles and waste and serving up locally-sourced, seasonal and authentic fare. In a bid to recognise their efforts, the Michelin Guide launched a new Sustainable Gastronomy label in 2020, singling out eateries with outstanding environmental practices. Around 50 restaurants have been awarded the green-dining accolade to date.
7. The rural heartland
France’s rolling countryside, its spellbinding landscapes and slower pace of life have always held a near magnetic attraction for tourists in search of authenticity. Thanks to such initiatives as ‘Accueil Paysan’ and ‘Bienvenue à la ferme’, holidaymakers can now get a taste of the simple life, hop on a whistle-stop tour of local farms and meet the gatekeepers of ancestral traditions and savoir-faire.
8. Picture-perfect towns and villages
The Hexagon’s quaint towns and villages are the perfect antidote to mass tourism; a chance to discover picturesque nooks away from the madding crowd. The best way to start your exploration is by checking out the various labels and designations signposting France’s historic villages and most remarkable towns. The ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ association counts 159 member villages and aims to promote and protect the country’s most enchanting hamlets. A total of 107 unmissable towns and villages have been recognised as ‘Plus Beaux Détours de France’ thanks to their unique character, host of attractions and charming accommodation. Finally, the ‘Petites Cités de Caractère’ label champions outstanding rural towns paving the way for sustainable tourism.
9. Green cities
France counts some of the most eco-friendly cities in the world, chief among them Nantes, which was voted European Green Capital in 2013. Following hot on its heels, Dijon and Grenoble recently reached the finals of the 2022 European Green Capital Award. While Lyon narrowly missed out on a place in the shortlist, its commitment to sustainability and green-living track record have been recognised time and again over the years. Not only was Lyon named French Diversity Capital in 2019, it holds the coveted title of European Smart City.
10. Accessible tourism for all
From ‘Destinations pour tous’ to ‘Tourisme & Handicap’, a growing number of nationwide campaigns and labels strive to improve accessibility for and cater to the less-able-bodied. No fewer than 5,536 tourist attractions and accommodations across the country are now wheelchair-friendly including 337 in Charente-Maritime alone and 205 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Share this post for good karma 😊
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a holiday destination?
It may be its scenery, its culture or so on but I can say that there are some tourism slogans that reflect the true essence of a place where some may be amusing, some can leave a broad grin on your face or some, a wistful one.
We all know that every country in the world hires its own advertising agency to come up with some fancy tourism slogans to attract tourists from not only within the country but from all over the world.
And in fact, these slogans have so far done a good job of sweeping the imperfections under the carpet while painting a dreamy picture of them to the outsiders.

Improving France’s appeal and outreach
France is the world’s leading destination , welcoming 89.4 million foreign visitors in 2018 (3% more than in 2017). Tourism is a key sector of the French economy. It accounts for nearly 8% of GDP, €56.2 billion in tourism receipts and generates two million jobs directly or indirectly.
The tourism sector is growing significantly worldwide. The number of international tourists totalled 1.2 billion in 2016 according to the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and is expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030.
With regard to tourism challenges, the Government set the goal of 100 million international tourists and €50 billion in tourism receipts for 2020 .
To develop this strategic sector, it has made tourism a priority. In July 2017, the Prime Minister convened 17 government members, elected officials and tourism professionals in the first interministerial tourism council to present the government’s road map for tourism to be headed by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. An interministerial tourism council presided by the Prime Minister, and a tourism steering council, presided by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will alternately meet every three months according to a set two-year schedule.

France launches marketing campaign to lure tourists to the country
France plans to reopen to international tourists on 9 june, backed by a €10-million marketing campaign.
National tourism development agency Atout France is teaming up with 13 regional tourist boards, tourism agencies and private partners across mainland France to launch a marketing campaign to bring tourists to France. The ‘#ExploreFrance – What Really Matters campaign’ will run in the UK and nine other European markets.
Tourists from EU countries are able to enter France if they provide proof of a negative PCR test; however, currently the country remains on the UK’s amber list. Before Covid, France was one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, with over 90 million annual visitors. Three-quarters of these come from Europe, with this proportion expected to increase to 85 per cent in 2021.
Showcasing slow tourism and the great outdoors
Atout France said the What Really Matters campaign was adapted to suit the current crisis: “In particular, the campaign will showcase slow tourism, the great outdoors, culture and heritage, and lifestyle. The common theme running throughout the campaign will be more sustainable tourism,” it said.
The campaign will run throughout the summer and autumn. The launch comes as EU ambassadors agree to ease restrictions on travel for non-EU travellers, a big step towards reopening Europe for non-essential travel.

‘Climate-Controlled’ Sausage? Courts Crack Down on ‘Greenwashing’
From airlines to pork sellers, corporate brands face legal and regulatory challenges for misleading the public with lofty climate claims.
By Somini Sengupta
A “climate-controlled” sausage. New trousers labeled “recycled.” A “sustainable” airline ticket.
More and more, big brands are using taglines like these to cater to their green-minded customers. And more and more, they are under fire from courts and regulators for making climate promises they can’t keep.
Researchers at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment last year identified “an explosion of ‘climate-washing’ cases,” using existing national laws and regulations. Between 2020 and 2022, the most recent year for which statistics are available, the number of cases challenging the “truthfulness of corporate climate commitments" more than doubled, their tally found .
This year, this dynamic is playing out in several countries.
In Denmark, a national court in March told Danish Crown, the country’s biggest pork producer, that it’s misleading to label its pork “climate-controlled,” though it declared that it’s fine to assert that Danish pigs “are more climate friendly than you think.”
In Britain, also in March, the Competition and Markets Authority, a regulatory agency, looked into the climate claims of several fast-fashion brands and concluded that it’s misleading to stamp a green leaf on a product and call it “recycled,” without specifying how much of its content is actually recycled.
A Dutch court prohibited KLM from using the slogan “fly responsibly” in its advertisements.
And in New York, State Attorney General Letitia James sued the meat multinational, JBS, for making “sweeping representations ” about neutralizing its emissions in the coming years, but offering “no viable plan.”
These cases reflect how campaigners are using an ever-wider range of national and international law to slow down climate change. They have sued governments for failing to protect their citizens’ constitutional rights to life, and occasionally won, as in a case in Germany . They’ve used human rights law to challenge governments, most recently winning a case at a regional European court . They’ve sought to leverage international treaties , like the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to force governments to rein in emissions.
Complaints against alleged greenwashing are now gathering steam.
Another database, maintained by the Columbia University Law School’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law since 2011, found that among climate cases filed against private entities, the largest number of cases — a total of at least 77 — alleged misleading advertisements .
These complaints also reflect a business imperative. Companies selling everything from toothpaste to soup are trying to meet changing consumer demands.
In the United States, sales of consumer products that are labeled green or sustainable are growing twice as fast as those that are not , according to research from New York University’s Stern School of Business, with younger and wealthier consumers more likely than others to buy those products.
“This is a market opportunity, and companies should figure out how to make claims authentically,” said Tensie Whelan, director of NYU’s Center for Sustainable Business.
The lawsuits can be a double-edged sword. They can hold companies to account, but they can also make companies trying to cut their emissions reluctant to market themselves as such.
“The easiest thing for companies is to say, ‘I just won’t say anything about it anymore or I’ll downplay what I do because that minimizes the risks,’” said Branda Katan, an attorney who represented KLM in court in The Netherlands.
JBS, the world’s biggest meat producer, is among the most closely watched of these cases in the U.S. Responding to the latest complaint by Ms. James’ office, JBS told The New York Times that i t disagreed with the allegations and that it would “to help feed a growing population while using fewer resources and reducing agriculture’s environmental impact.”
The press spokesperson for Danish Crown did not return an email asking for a response to the court ruling in Denmark. On its website, it explains that “climate-controlled” refers to the measures taken by pig farmers to reduce emissions from their operations.
Airlines have become a popular target of greenwashing lawsuits. An advocacy group filed a complaint against more than a dozen airlines for allegedly breaching European Union consumer protection laws, arguing that the offer of offsets are misleading because the emissions savings from offsets are “uncertain.” (An airline industry group responded to the complaint by saying that “ while offsets currently play a role, their significance will diminish” as airlines develop more efficient fleets and develop alternatives to jet fuel, a heavy pollutant.).
Meanwhile, three separate cases are pending in U.S. courts , against three different airlines over their use of terms like “carbon-neutral” and “sustainable.”
Energy companies are a relatively new target. In Canada, a climate advocacy group called Client Earth filed a complaint in April against FortisBC for its advertising campaign promoting what it calls “renewable natural gas,” or the methane that is captured from livestock farms and landfills. Lawyers with Stand Environmental Society, an advocacy group, argue that the ads are deceptive , since most of the gas supplied by FortisBC to its customers for home heating comes from fossil fuels, while a small share comes from the gas captured from landfills and farms.
FortisBC issued a statement saying it disagrees with the plaintiffs’ allegations. “FortisBC takes climate change very seriously and is taking action to help B.C. meet its climate goals,” the statement read.
