Freeride World Tour Releases 2024 Calendar – 4 Stops Before The Cut, and a New Event in Georgia!

Mountainwatch | Press release

The countdown to the 17 th  edition of the FWT is underway, with a new presenting sponsor – Peak Performance – and an action-packed calendar that includes an electrifying new stop in Georgia. Last year, we bid farewell to multiple FWT legends, including Aymar Navarro and Reine Barkered, and ushered in the next generation of freeriders that pushed the level to an all-time high.

The focus now shifts to what promises to be a scintillating season ahead, with the world’s best freeriders locked in and ready to take on the most challenging – and intimidating – freeride faces around the globe.

This year will include  six stops , offering riders four competitions before the cut. Those who rack up enough points will compete in the FWT Finals in Fieberbrunn and Verbier, and fight for the right to be crowned World Champion. Relegated athletes will have the chance to re-qualify for FWT25 via the FWT Challenger series, where they will face off against the top riders from the FWT Qualifiers.

The FWT kicks off in the Spanish Pyrenees (Jan 27 – Feb 1) for the third consecutive year, a location that never disappoints with its epic terrain backed up by an incredible local crowd. Competition returns to the  Bacivér  face, where we’ll get the first glimpse of the new class of rookies, and see if they can hold their own against the established roster and returning champions.

Back-to-back action in the Pyrenees as the FWT moves to neighbouring Andorra (Feb 1-7), where Ordino Arcalís will host the world’s best once again. Riders have been putting their mark on these mountains since 2015 and will be treated to the incredible venue of the Pic de les Planes, a creative big mountain haven with all the ingredients needed for playful, freeride action.

The tour then heads across the Atlantic to North America, returning to the ever-consistent snowpack of British Colombia, Canada. The competition is always intense at Kicking Horse Golden BC (Feb 14-20) which has hosted the world’s best since 2018. Action will likely be held on the formidable Ozone face, an extreme venue providing ample opportunities for riders to send it large

Nestled at the intersection of Europe and Asia, Georgia will host the last stop (March 1-7) before the cut, and the ultimate chance for riders to qualify for the FWT Finals. Georgia boasts a rich tapestry of traditions and a culture renowned for its hospitality, as well as the imposing Caucasus Mountains, which contain multiple peaks over 5,000 metres.

freeride world tour calendar 2024

The country has successfully hosted FWT Qualifier events during the last two seasons, demanding the attention of the international ski community. Both Tetnuldi and Mestia have emerged as prominent freeride destinations, offering vast big mountain terrain that enjoys copious amounts of snowfall over the winter months.

THE CUT will be after stop four, before the final two events that make up the FWT Finals. Athletes can qualify using their three best results from the first four events.

After the inaugural event in Georgia, the best of the best will head to Fieberbruun, Austria (March 12-18) for the first FWT Final, a location that has been a tour mainstay since 2013. Competition returns to the ever-impressive Wildseeloder face, a truly intimidating big mountain venue, where riders will enjoy a two-run format to impress judges in their bid for the title.

freeride world tour calendar 2024

A freeride theatre that needs no introduction, the Grand Finale – as always – will be held on the iconic Bec des Rosses in Verbier (March 23-31) .  Dangerous snow conditions forced the event to be cancelled last season, but the FWT is ready to return to a place it has called home since 1996, and where the next four world champions will be crowned.

Calendar Freeride World Tour 2024

The Freeride World Tour is back for another action-packed season!

The countdown to the 17th edition of the FWT is underway.

This year will include six stops , -with a new stop in Georgia-, offering riders four competitions Freeride World Tour, Freeride, Tetnuldi, Georgia before the cut. Those with enough points will compete in the FWT Finals in Fieberbrunn and in the legendary face of the Bec des Rosses in the Verbier Xtreme.

Georgia and the Caucasus Mountains have successfully hosted FWT Qualifier events during the last two seasons, demanding the attention of the international ski community. Both Tetnuldi and Mestia have emerged as prominent freeride destinations, offering vast big mountain terrain that enjoys copious amounts of snowfall over the winter months.

Tetnuldi is a prominent peak (4,858 m.) in the central part of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, located in the Svaneti region of Georgia. The Tetnuldi ski resort was opened during the 2015-2016 winter season and is unique in its location zone for skiing high on the north-west slopes of the homonymous mountain and closeness of glaciers Adish (Lardaad), Nageb, and Tsanner, with a long ski season that stretches from November till the end of May thanks to the abundance of snow and northern slope exposure.

The Hatsvali–Mestia ski resort is located in Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti (Georgia).

The Hatsvali ski resort near Mestia is located in northwestern Georgia in the Greater Caucasus. The city of Mestia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Freeride World Tour (FWT) is the premier big mountain freeskiing and snowboarding tour in the world, featuring the sport’s top athletes competing in the world’s best mountain resorts. Created in 2008, the FWT became even more global in 2012 following the union of the North American-based Freeskiing World Tour, The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, and the European-based Swatch Freeride World Tour.

FWT Management SA , based in Verbier-Switzerland, has been organizing world-class sports events in mountain resorts and regions since 1996. Founder of “Verbier Xtreme”, an iconic event in freeride skiing & snowboarding, FWT Management SA, has taken in 2008 this stand-alone event to create several series of international freeride competitions totaling over 200 events around the globe for professional, amateur, and junior riders and 6,000 licensed riders.

FWT Management SA is the organizer of the following Series: Freeride World Tour (FWT), Challenger, Qualifier, and Junior events taking place in Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Oceania.

In December 2022 the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) announced that it had acquired the Freeride World Tour (FWT).

The Inertia

The Freeride World Tour, a series of events pitting the top skiers and riders against each other on some of the boldest big-mountain lines on slopes around the world, has a couple of interesting updates this year. Since its conception in 1996 as a single competition event, to the debut of the tour format in 2008, featuring icons from Candide Thovex to Xavier de Le Rue, the FWT has consistently created a stellar format to showcase talent. It recently released this year’s Rider’s Roster and will continue to operate under the direction of FIS (a new development last year). What does this mean for riders, and more importantly, for viewers?

The tour will still be action-packed due to its judging characteristics : riders are scored based on their ability to pick (and complete) challenging lines, maintain control, link maneuvers together fluidly, exercise proper technique, and showcase style by making it all look good together. Though tricks are not required, they tend to score well, and with plenty of cliffs on steep terrain, there’s room during airtime. The most thrilling part of the FWT, as opposed to other ski competitions, is that the riders are only allowed a visual inspection of the contest venue – they ski their line for the first time during the contest.

FIS, short for the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, acquired the FWT in December of 2022 and will continue to manage the large-scale of the tour this winter season . However, not too much will be shaken up from the viewing perspective, as the FWT will still run the day-to-day operations of the events. FIS will focus on broadening the audience for the FWT, as well as strengthening opportunities for the Freeride competitors.

FIS is the largest winter International Federation, and acquiring the FWT means spotlighting these athletes for Olympic opportunities and large-scale projects as opposed to the athletes competing on the tour as a standalone event. The CEO of the Freeride World Tour, Nicolas Hale-Woods , stated that the tour was “thrilled to be joining forces with FIS… Being under the umbrella of the largest winter sports international federation will give them more access to support, increased visibility, and additional resources that will ultimately allow the FWT and all of its stakeholders to grow.”

If you keep up with the WSL tour, you may be somewhat familiar with the FWT format. Interestingly, the FWT has many structural parallels to the WSL. Like the WSL, the FWT is actually a larger brand as well as a competitive tour, and there are several other competitions catering to different skill levels and ages, such as the FWT Qualifier and the FWT Junior. There are also returning winners and rookies, keeping the competition fresh each season, with crowd favorites returning and younger generation riders hoping to break into the big leagues. And, like the WSL tour, there are wildcards.

For the FWT this year, the 2024 Rider’s Roster was released on October 26 , and with 19 new Rookies split between men’s and women’s ski and snowboard categories, there’s a lot of potential for surprises. Of course, there are some non-returners: Reine Barkered left the tour after an impressive 15 years.   For women, Jess Hotter and Elisabeth Gerritzen are also not on the 2024 list .

There are plenty of skiers for the men’s division in the mix this season who have not yet been on tour, such as Martin Bender, Jackson Bathgate, Kendall Goodman, Wei Tien Ho, Tenra Katsuno, and Colton Shaff. On the women’s side, seven out of eight women have less than one year of experience on the tour . Additionally, three of these women are rookies: Astrid Cheylus, Lydia Nelson, and Taylor Dobyns, adding even more excitement to what could be a crazy season.

Due to all of the new talent this year, the viewing experience should be pretty nuts. The younger generations often push the limits more than the “old heads,” even though it takes a season or two to really root for someone on tour and watching successful skiers and riders from season’s past can be really satisfying. Winners often get in a groove and take out more than one event , so it’s nice to see so many fresh faces (and new opportunities for countries to be represented on the podium)! I’d be willing to say this season may be one of the most compelling seasons we’ve ever had in over a decade (pretty much the whole lifetime of the modern tour).

Who are your picks for this season? The experienced riders we have a sense of already, or the title-hungry rookies? No matter who you’re betting on, we’ll find out starting on January 27, and on February 1, we’ll know for sure.

Only the best. We promise.

FMBA Unveils Preliminary Calendar for 2024 World Tour: A Year Packed with Excitement and Inclusivity

The Freeride Mountain Bike Association (FMBA) has unveiled its preliminary calendar for the 2024 FMB World Tour, promising a year brimming with adrenaline-fuelled competitions and groundbreaking new additions. With a diverse array of events spanning the globe, this year’s tour introduces the Gold Cup and proudly includes a women’s category at all levels – making it the first year ever, female athletes are able compete in Diamond Level events, marking a significant step forward for the sport.

2024 Queenstown Bike Festival

Kicking off with the Mons Royale Queenstown Bike Festival in New Zealand, the 2024 season has already set the bar high for excitement. From the Maxxis Slopestyle in Memory of McGazza at Crankworx Rotorua to the first edition of the B-Line Brawler Jump Jam in Calgary, Canada, the early weeks promise thrilling action for fans and competitors alike. The FMB World Tour’s momentum continues with the second Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship (SWC) event at Crankworx Cairns in May, showcasing the best riders in a breathtaking display of skill and creativity. Following a successful run in the Southern Hemisphere, the tour calendar shifts its focus to Europe, with events in Germany, Switzerland, and Slovakia, building up to the Diamond Level Thule Slopestyle at Crankworx Innsbruck.

As summer heats up, the FMB World Tour crosses the Atlantic to North America, with highlights including the Big White Invitational in August and the Ultimate Freerider Series in the United States. Another series to return this year is the Swiss Dirt Series, offering three Bronze Level events throughout June and August.

Davos Dirt Jam Swiss Dirt Series 2023

Introducing the New FMB Gold Cup

A new addition to the FMB World Tour is the inaugural Gold Cup, providing a unique pathway to the pinnacle of Slopestyle and adding a whole new dimension to the sport. Athletes have the opportunity to win prequalification for all SWC Diamond Events in 2025, with athletes ranking second to fourth in the Gold Cup standings earning coveted “Golden Tickets” to enter one of the four Crankworx FMBA SWC events next year. The inclusion of a women’s category in the Gold Cup is contingent on having at least two Gold Level events for women on this year’s calendar. Detailed information on the FMBA Gold Cup Standings can be found in the FMBA Rule Book (page 10).

Expanding its commitment to inclusivity and equality, the FMBA introduced a women’s category to events at all levels with the Rule Book Update a few months ago. This groundbreaking move allows female athletes to compete in Diamond Level events on the SWC for the first time ever. With broadcast coverage on Red Bull TV, fans around the world can witness the thrilling performances of both male and female athletes at the four Crankworx FMBA SWC events confirmed for 2024: starting with the Maxxis Slopestyle in Memory of McGazza at Crankworx Rotorua’s 10-year anniversary (March 24), followed by the Crankworx Cairns Slopestyle (May 25), the Thule Slopestyle at Crankworx Innsbruck (June 15), and Red Bull Joyride at Crankworx Whistler (July 27).

Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship at Cairns Slopestyle 2023

With 21 confirmed events, including four Diamond, three Gold, two Silver, and 12 Bronze Level competitions, and more events to be added in the upcoming weeks, the 2024 FMB World Tour is set to be one to remember. Stay updated on additional event announcements by following FMBA on Instagram and checking the official 2024 FMB World Tour Calendar .

Edwards big mountain skier qualifies for Freeride World Tour

Finn griffith placed second and third at a pair of fwt challenger events in march to earn the exclusive slot on the globe's top freeride circuit.

Finn Griffith’s motto this winter was simple.

“A king a day keeps the doctor away,” the 19-year-old big mountain skier said.

A freshmen at the University of Washington, it took awhile for Griffith to adjust to skiing only on weekends. But the Ski and Snowboard Club Vail alumnus’ on-snow intentionality increased from anticipating and visualizing potential lines and big drops all week during classes. Every time he made the two-hour drive to Crystal Mountain, Griffith let loose, always making sure he did at least one lap of Silver King — the crown jewel run on the 7,000-foot peak.

“No matter the conditions,” he added. “And yeah…it worked out for me.”

This spring, Griffith earned a spot on the 2024-2025 Freeride World Tour (FWT), the globe’s top professional freeride circuit. He was one of eight skiers to qualify from the two regions comprising the FWT Challenger series and will join a group of 20 or so athletes on next year’s Pro Tour.

“I know this was a dream of his for a very long time and he put in a ton of hard work to get there,” said Matt Luczkow, Griffith’s former coach at SSCV. “He has a lot of momentum from his junior year into this year and hopefully into next year.”

Last year, Griffith finished sixth at the Freeride World Tour Junior World Championships and went on to win the North American Junior Freeride Championship. He earned an FWT Challenger (the intermediate step between the FWT Pro and FWT Qualifier series) start by claiming the 2023 International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association (IFSA) U19 overall title .

His secret to taking another step forward this year?

“I was skiing a lot less,” he said. “Honestly, skiing this year was a lot more fun because when I was up there I was taking more advantage of my time and had a better appreciation of it.”

Even so, Griffith struggled at his first adult competitions. At the end of January, he placed 32nd at the Revelstroke Qualifier and just 20th in Kicking Horse.

“I was a little bit in my head about what to do and I didn’t necessarily stick to the way that I ski the best,” he said.

With his wildcard Challenger start in the back pocket, Griffith returned home for the Crested Butte event on March 14.

“Being in Colorado was pretty big,” he admitted. “It was a venue I’d skied before (and) I was just honestly in a better mindset.”

Even though he’d picked out a line during inspection of the Spellbound and High Life venues, he changed his mind when he got to the top.

“The first air was a 30-foot air into a pocket that I knew was pretty thin. I kind of knew it was going to be only good for three or four people,” he said. Ninth in the order, Griffith altered the top-half of his run to “something completely different.”

“The great part about it was all you could see from the top was the landing. You couldn’t see anything around it,” he said. “From the bottom, you see it and you pretty much have to go almost 35 feet over this rock field and pin this sniper landing in-between two rocks.”

The blindness cast out any fear or trepidation.

“I was like, might as well go for it,” he continued. “It ended up working out for me.”

Griffith finished second and went on to win a bronze in Silverton two weeks later.

“I kind of just knew I needed to land a solid line,” he said regarding his run at the ‘San Juan Showdown,’ where he “lined up as many features as possible in the fall line.”

“When he skis, he skis very hard. He’s always pushing himself and going at 100%,” Luczkow said, adding that Griffith’s style is to be “fast, go big and stay smooth.”

“He’s not a big trick guy,” the coach continued. “That’s not his specialty. He’s more of a pure skier.”

He’s worked at his weaknesses, though. The prospects of finding FWT-caliber skiers in the college dining hall is understandably grim, but Griffith lucked out. He met up with fellow University of Washington freshman and FWT Qualifier skier, Reed Naspinski. The pair sharpened one another on the Crystal Mountain slopes each weekend and made use of occasional night skiing at The Summit at Snoqualmie.

“I really improved on a lot of aspects, especially in terms of tricks,” Griffith said.

When he hops up to the top-tier of the FWT pyramid next season, the Edwards athlete will join a growing group of Vail-area athletes who’ve made the FWT. Jack and Kevin Nichols finished sixth in overall ski standings in 2022, a season which saw fellow Battle Mountain graduate Blake Moller win the snowboard title . Moller’s brother, Grifen, has also competed on the FWT.

“I mean growing up, Kevin and Jack were like gods to little 8-year-old me,” Griffith said. “Definitely take a little bit of inspiration from them for sure.”

When he’s home, Griffith drops in to inspire the next generation of riders, too.

“He’s kind of taken on a mentor role with the younger kids on the team,” Luczkow said. “He’s just a really hard worker and has a lot of passion and I’m really proud of what he’s doing.”

FWT announces 2024 Junior & Qualifier calendars

50 Qualifier and 42 Junior events confirmed for Region 1.

The FWT has revealed the schedules for both the FWT Junior and FWT Qualifier, which now include more competitions and exciting new locations. 50 Qualifier and 42 Junior events – with more to be confirmed – will make up Region 1 alone, featuring some of the best freeride venues across the globe. The future talent of the sport will be on display, and each event offers a chance to gain valuable points towards making the FWT Challenger Series (stay tuned, the calendar will be announced soon) and, ultimately, the FWT.

a global distribution

The FWT has long been proud of offering events worldwide, and the new stops in China and Kazakhstan continue this ethos. Not only will these competitions provide further opportunities to score points, but they will also likely uncover fresh freeride talent in the regions. More importantly, they will be a huge promotion of the sport, creating interest to feed the future of freeriding in these highly populated countries. As always, action will be non stop in North America, with IFSA organizing competitions in Region 2.

The freeride fanatical Spanish Pyrenees

Three events have been announced in Baqueira Beret, Spain – including two Junior and one Qualifier – following the great success of the FWT competitions in recent years. Freeriding has become incredibly popular in the Spanish Pyrenees, owing to the epic terrain in the region, and this strong demand has been recognized by organizers, resulting in extra competitions across the country. As a strong signal for the movement, the Spanish National Federation has recognized freeriding as an official discipline, which will result in increased opportunities and support for aspiring athletes.

freeride weeks

After the great success of last year's Verbier Freeride Week, this season the format will also be introduced in Bruson.

Verbier Freeride Week (January 6-14) will hold one Junior and two Qualifier events, offering a wealth of opportunities for young riders to test their skills in the big mountains. This season will also see the return of a girls-only competition – the Freerid’Her – in both the Junior and Qualifier Series. Admission is open to all girls ready to take the leap into competition and will help to promote diversity in the sport.

freeride world tour calendar 2024

The Bruson Freeride Week, established after the big turnout of last year’s competitions in Bruson, will take place February 17-25 and will feature 3 Qualifier and 1 Junior events.

The stoke for winter keeps building with this fresh announcement, coinciding with plummeting temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere. This season will offer copious opportunities for athletes across all formats, which will continue to transpire with even more events still to be announced. Registrations for athletes across all formats open on November 1.
