People sometimes did that deliberately in some of those old radios to create a so called private channel. A selector switch fault of some sort could be another possibility. Since it was a kit, the switch itself or the crystal sockets could have been wired wrong. That far off frequency usually indicates something other than a crystal that has simply drifted off with age.
