This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

The Western idea of Africa as a vast unknowable expanse of wilderness — rather than a living, breathing place with as much diversity and unique regionality as any other continent — has endured with stubborn longevity. Perhaps quintessential images like silverbacks in a lush mountain forest, giraffes and acacia trees silhouetted against a savannah sunset, and herds of elephants in the floodplains along a winding river stick with travelers because they are so unlike the nature scenes of the U.S., where centuries of human interference have left little trace of true wilderness or of the animals that once roamed freely.

Africa's rarefied natural spaces have compelled generations of adventurers to seek them out — and the hospitality world has kept pace. Today's safari-goers have little more to worry about than checking off the Big Five and whether to order red or white with dinner. And for the ultimate in service, comfort, and indulgence, they can't go wrong with the places that T+L readers voted onto this year's list of the best safari lodges in Africa.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

The spots on the list are brimming with opulent touches and spectacular scenery. At No. 4 Angama Mara, in Kenya's Masai Mara , two 15-tent camps dot the edge of an escarpment about 300 yards above the game reserve. The views of the Great Rift Valley are so cinematic it's tempting to stay on property and just gawk at the scenery. Don't miss a visit to the on-site craft workshop, where Masai women teach guests the techniques and meaning behind their beading traditions, or the photography studio, where you can test out pro gear and polish up your safari snapshots with cutting-edge photo-editing software.

At No. 6 Singita Grumeti, in Tanzania , the lodging options offer something for every style: crystal chandeliers and gilded frames at Sasakwa Lodge, rattan chairs and campaign tables at Sabora Tented Camp, and breezy furnishings and basketry-inspired light fixtures at Faru Faru Lodge, among others. In South Africa, andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge (No. 9) has 20 cottages that blend light details — wide-slate bathroom floors, ceramic stools, pale patterned loveseats, high thatched ceilings — with the gravitas of deep-hued wood furnishings, muted flat-weave rugs, and antique-inspired wildlife illustrations. Overall, it feels grounded and traditional, but never stuffy. The property is situated on Ngala Private Game Reserve, which — thanks to the success of andBeyond's conservation work — is now part of Kruger National Park.

Many of the properties on this list held an emotional resonance for our readers, one that lingered long after returning home. Of the Bushcamp Company's Mfuwe Lodge, in Zambia, which came in No. 8, one reader wrote, "I dream about Mfuwe, the people, and the sounds of the animals at night. The experience I had was beyond everything I imagined." Another put it simply: "You truly connect with raw life." A reader who spent time at No. 5 Gibb's Farm, in Tanzania, called it "the most magical place I've ever stayed!" And at Sasaab, in Kenya, the property's do-good efforts made a mark just as much as the luxe environment: "Sasaab's culture is fabulous," a reader wrote of the No. 10 property, adding that "the hotel has an innate sustainable ethos."

It's perfectly organised. From the moment you check in until the moment you check out. Staff: super friendly. Timings: on point. Quality of food: excellent. Game drives: wonderful! We saw a lot of different animals (too many to name). Separate pool areas for children and adults.

The game lodge is easy to reach from Cape Town. The facilities are nice and the game drives were very fun and we saw many different animals- including the Big 5. We were lucky to be guided by Hannes who was very knowledgeable, interesting and entertaining. His love and respect for the animals was contagious.

The whole experience was fabulous.. Great tours and guides!

Everything was wonderful, the breakfast and dinner were great, the safari was amazing as well, we saw the big 5, even though it’s a small reserve compared to others, the animals were scattered and it was difficult to find them. Lovely experience, will definitely come again.

The accommodation is close to each other and accessible from the restaurant/reception. The service was great considering we were traveling in a multi-generational group. The restaurant handled the orders for breakfast and dinner extremely well. Extremely accommodating babies and parents needs. Guide very knowledgeable!

The Safari, the faculty, and every single part of it. The staff were all very lovely and nice.

Garden Route Game Lodge is located near Albertinia, overlooking the Langeberg Mountain Range. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and various animals can often be seen. It features a pool and a restaurant. Each room and chalet at Garden Route Game Lodge offers either views of the mountains or the valley. They are elegantly decorated with thatched roofs and wooden furniture. All of them have TVs with digital channels and a safe. Guests have free half board treatment at the Lodge. State Game Lodge

The State Game Lodge is a stately native stone and wood lodge est. in 1920, offering an array of unique lodging options and activities for visitors. The State Game Lodge is located on Route 16A, the southeastern portion of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway as it branches off towards the Wildlife Loop .

About State Game Lodge

As the first and largest lodge in Custer State Park, the State Game Lodge is the primary resort hub within Custer State Park, complete with lodge rooms and cabins, meeting space, wedding venues, dining, and more. This lodge is known for its grand, historic character and tradition. The State Game Lodge served as the “ Summer White House ” for President Calvin Coolidge in 1927 and was visited by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. And the Grace Coolidge Creek still serenely winds through the valley today.

The park’s popular Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours originate from the State Game Lodge (check in at Creekside Lodge). Take an open-air ride into the wilderness in search of bison while our guides tell you all about the park and its amazing wildlife.

Lodging at the State Game Lodge

Your stay today at the State Game Lodge resort is all about options. Upstairs in the historic lodge above the restaurant, find the seven original lodge rooms (including the appropriately named Coolidge Room and Eisenhower Room, both interim homes to the late Presidents during their terms). Added on to the lodge mid-century, two wings of lodge rooms boast picture windows for wildlife viewing. Another 200 yards southeast, find Creekside Lodge , est. in 2008. Last but by no means least, 1/2 mile's peaceful walk along the paved Creekside Trail leads you to the sprinkling of cabins along the creek.

Set in the beautiful mountain valley, stay in modernized cabins near Coolidge Creek and the historical State Game Lodge. Be sure to watch out the window... you never know when a buffalo might be looking in!

Safari activities with Chobe Game Lodge

From the boardwalk to the boats, the natural focus of Chobe Game Lodge centres around the river. Wildlife travels unbelievable distances across the parched land to get to the life-giving waters of the Chobe, and we have spent the last 50 years understanding this precious environment.

Guests can see the best of this natural world from land and water, following the river by either safari vehicle or boat. Either option is cleverly designed to give unobstructed views and the best chance of great sightings. Being located inside the national park, we are able to leave at first light, getting out whilst the light is at its best, and predators are more active.

Away from the wildlife, there’s plenty to do, from a modern gym, stylish spa, large pool or just making the most of the 250 meters of boardwalk along the Chobe. Matetsi Victoria Falls—Matetsi Private Game Reserve, Zimbabwe

This family-owned property gets its name for the majestic Victoria Falls, a World Heritage Site that’s only 25 miles upstream. Guests can choose to stay in one of the 18 suites or the four-bedroom River House villa. 

Either way, you’ll get  your own private pool, and can rest easy knowing that proceeds from the lodge help fund efforts in the Matetsi conservation area.

Singita Pamushana—Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, Zimbabwe

This luxurious safari lodge provides incredible views of ancient forests and natural sandstone structures . 

But the real draw of this property is the private access that visitors get to the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, which is home to big cats, wild dogs, and herds of elephants. Drives and cruises are an excellent way to explore the reserve and visitors can take part in a number of cool activities, including tag-and-release fishing.

Wilderness DumaTau—Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, Botswana

A visit at Wilderness DumaTau means staying right in the middle of lion territory . 

In Botswana’s dry season, animals migrate to the reserve, which provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to see wildlife like hippos, elephants, antelope, and wild dogs.

Jack’s Camp—Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

At Jack’s Camp, visitors get the unique experience of staying in tents near the shimmering Makgadikgadi salt pans. 

Activities here cater to the more adventurous side, with game drives, rides on quad-bikes , and unforgettable encounters with meerkats.

The eight suites at Jabali Ridge are nestled among huge boulders, and provide incredible views of the baobab forest below.

Singita prioritizes nature-based tourism, which has restored the Grumeti Reserve to a thriving home for wildlife.

This African Safari Lodge Just Got a Luxe Makeover. Here’s a Look Inside.

It can take a lifetime of travel to even begin to know the hugely diverse landscapes of Africa. But if you only have an American-sized vacation, there’s no need to chase charter flight after flight to camp after camp in country after country. Africa can be taken-in in miniature, provided you know where to go: for instance, the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.    Here, a few hours north of Durban, near the border of the landlocked micro-nation of Eswatini, you’ll find the 30-year-old Phinda Private Game Reserve —115 square miles of protected land nicknamed the Seven Worlds of Wonder. It’s a cluster of seven distinct, ultra-rare dwarf ecosystems crammed together, including woodland, grassland, wetland, and forest (as well as an unusual sand forest), plus mountain ranges, rivers, marshes, and pans. It would take a grueling cross-continental, multi-national journey to tick even half of these boxes any other way.    Better still, rare landscapes make for even rarer animals. So while the Big Five are in abundance, so are shy red duikers, diminutive suni antelopes, Tonga red squirrels, and 436 bird species.   Within Phinda, there are six camps , each targeting a different habitat within the reserve, but aim your LandRover at its Forest Lodge (from $850 per night). Within the reserve’s four-square-mile sand forest, andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge recently emerged from its first full makeover since opening in 1994.

The refurb—which cost an unspecified sum, spent by an unspecified ownership, according to the resorts rep—has ramped up the luxury of the lodge’s Zulu Zen style and added new facilities such as an infinity pool (complete with a poolside bar), a fitness room, and a spa. The panoramic forest views and grazing nyalas are still intact.

The lodge’s Gallery, a tranquil library and lounge, is now decorated with a cabinet of curiosities and a series of prints depicting the life of Shaka Zulu , the former ruler of the Zulu Kingdom.

“The original catchphrase was ‘Zulu Zen,’ and we wanted to keep that,” says Kerri Smithers, general manager of Phinda Forest. “But we’ve also added an ‘Afro Japanese’ touch with the low seating and Japanese-inspired doors.”

However, the design is remains very much rooted in South Africa, assures Smithers.

“The woven papyrus mats on the ceiling look Japanese but are actually made by local women and are used on flooring and to take to the beach,” she says. “The lights are inspired by traditional Zulu brooms and have also been made by local women. And as Zulus use lots of clay, we’ve added these decorative clay pots, which traditionally are passed around to drink beer out of.”

Outside, the terrace can be used to host private dinners, while a few steps away, the birds-nest-inspired fire pit is the new hot spot for pre-dinner drinks, while recounting the day’s safari adventures.

The camp’s 16 lodges now include a new larger family-friendly suite. It’s made up of two interconnecting rooms that have been refigured to maximize the space, something that Smithers says was a key part of the refurbishment since it avoided a complete rebuild that would’ve disturbed the surrounding habitat. The bedroom’s clean lines nod to Japanese minimalism. The geometric headboard is made from the same papyrus mats as the Gallery’s ceiling, juxtaposed to broom lamps and decorative hanging beadwork. Chunky wood furnishings crafted from stained iroko and touches of forest green Astrus marble bring the outside in, but what really connects you with nature are the floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the lodge, including one next to the luxuriously deep tub. You can continue to spot grazing nyala and curious monkeys at all hours; the team even recommend sleeping with the curtains to really feel like you’re spending the night in the forest, at one with nature.

The lodge matters, but it’s ultimately designed to be left behind on daily game drives. And in unusual surroundings such as these, it’s only natural that the Phinda team specializes in organizing a more unique safari experience. For the first time, you can now e-biking through the sand forest. For the braver still, follow on a big game tracking walk to stalk rhinos, buffalo, and elephants. A final proof that this place is all about location, location, location: Phinda can even drive you to Sodwana Bay for a beach picnic. It’s one of the most scenic routes in Africa.   If you can handle both a late night and a bleary-eyed early morning, then for three months of the year—between November and January—you can head back to the bay after dark to watch two of the ocean’s largest turtles, the leatherback and loggerhead, emerge from the ocean to lay their eggs.   What andBeyond brings to this extraordinary place is the element of surprise. A wild goose (or rather tiger) chase might end at a candle lit bush tucker dinner. You may be surprised with a sleep out under the stars—with an armed ranger, of course. You may find that, unbeknownst to you, the staff have run a hot bath in your room and chilled a bottle of Champagne. Mocha-choca-rulas—the classic safari drink of caffeine, chocolate, and booze—are served in the morning, as are G&Ts at sundown.

Still, none of this comes easily. To operate any private reserve is a frustratingly Sisyphean task. The death of one beloved game animal leads to an over-population of another. Too many elephants can  destroy a forest; too few can leave it overgrown. But rather than toil in silence, andBeyond allows guests to become a part of their delicate conservation work.    In fact, many of the camp’s most exclusive adventures allow a limited number of guests the once-in-a-lifetime experience of getting hands on.   Help by notching the ears of rhino, or dehorning one to deter poachers. You can also assist in changing the collars on elephants or witness the release of animals, such as cheetahs and lions. If you’re more into pangolins then predators, then andBeyond will take you out to play hide-and-seek with the elusive animals, which have been successfully reintroduced to the region. And, oh what a region it is.

These will be mine second time going to Africa, the first time I booked everything with safari.com and pascal helped. He was amazing everything went perfect. Now going back to Botswana and pascal did everything again very fast and perfect. I had the best time and everything was super vip, and can’t wait to be back.October can’t come soon enough.

Botswana Experience

Anja, our agent, was very kind and helpful all the time to organize the perfect trip. She did it quickly and efficiently. The amount of days we spent in every place was perfect to really enjoy the hotels and the different activities they proposed (in general the hotels are very nice but we don’t have the time to really experience the place but here we did). Also the selections of hotels was very very nice. Nice infrastructure, excellent service (very professional) and outstanding places to visit (all the parks were great). We had a wonderful experience with the company in Botswana.

Theater of Conquest: Moscow (Level 4 City Event)

The new Warpath game-mode Theater of Conquest: Moscow (Level 4 City Event) is coming soon with tons of new activities, maps, and rewards!

Theater of Conquest: Moscow

• New snowing city level 4 – Moscow
• Kremlin: This strategic place is the pinnacle of Glory in Moscow, and rests in the heartland of this territory.
• Forts: Forts enable either an attack DMG or DMG Resist Buff for Alliance Members. 4 Forts provide attack buffs and another 4 forts provide resist buffs.
• Settlements: Alliances can capture these to allow its members access to more exclusive Arms EXP and Ammo on the Black Market.
• Blockhouses: These defensive fortifications activate troop durability or troop firepower buffs (Four Blockhouses for each buff).
• Arms Factories: These Factories provide Alliance Members with a 5-star unit every 2 days after 12AM UTC.
• Gold Deposits: Collection sites where commanders can mine Gold.
• New achievement demonstration – seasonal medals, and so many more!

Theater of Conquest: Moscow Participation Processes:

The event takes place in 5 stages: Preselection, Matching, Warm-up, Conquest, and Reward!

Preselection Phase

Alliances in the same server undergo an intense contest for 8 days to decide who will qualify for the Conquest: Moscow.

The top 32 Alliances will be qualified for Conquest: Moscow. The number will vary due to different active player numbers in different servers.

The qualified Alliances will be locked that player cannot join or leave the Alliance, and the Alliance cannot disband. The locking state continues until the end of Conquest: Moscow.

Matching Phase

Your Adversaries will be selected from the qualified Alliances. Groups will be formed with 8 Alliances in each to enter the Conquest.

The matching will only take place within the same server for now.

Warm-up Phase

A Warm-Up Round is held before entering the Battle of Moscow, where alliances contend for alluring buffs.

Conquest Phase

The Warm-Up Round then closes as the War in Moscow kicks off. Alliance Members representing their League in the War can then enter Moscow to fight in the War.

Every 8 Alliances will be assigned into one match for the fights, but only one will win.

While the Conquest: Moscow is in progress, participating Commanders can move into Moscow from cities around the world for free, and can spend 1 Entry Permit to move back to the original city during this phase.

Reward Phase

After the Conquest Phase ends, all Commanders who participated will earn the new officer: Ivan Andreyevich Volkov (Winter Huntsman) , and his beloved dog Shemyaka.

The higher rank you and your Alliance have, the more rewards you will get.

Alliance leaders will be able to assign extra rewards to those who perform the best during Conquest: Moscow.
