Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, USA. 01/02/23 10:33 AM. 13991 posts. Since you have so little time in Ghent, I'd do the canal tour in Bruges. Over the years I've done canal boat tours in both and to me Bruges is prettier. For Sint Baaf and the Altarpiece, be sure to go to the official site and get tickets ahead of time.
Here's my list of things to see in Ghent when we were there in 2018. Gravensteen castle. Sint Veerleplein - square. St. Michaels bridge. Graslei and Korenlei - walking. Belfry and tower. Stadhuis - City hall. Vrijdagmarkt - square. Korenmarkt - square.
The main stations in Brussels are Zuid (Midi), Central, and Nord, all in a row and trains from Gent (Ghent, Gand) and Brugge (Bruges) call at all three. The train from Paris, the Thalys - all reserved, no tickets onboard, much cheaper in advance) and the Eurostar trains from Amsterdam, Lille and London all only stop at Zuid.

11/03/21 11:59 AM. 6569 posts. With your limited time, skip Brussels and head straight to Ghent. The main draw to Brussels is the Grand Place and both Ghent and Antwerp have main plazas just as nice. That gives you the arrival day to see Ghent while allowing a day trip to Brugge or Antwerp the next day.

Brugge has a larger historical core, but tourism has mostly taken over the inner ring of the city. Gent hosts a large university and a more vibrant economy, so it feels more like a living city. If you enjoy a little more nightlife, stay in Gent. If you want the center of the city to yourself after dark, stay in Brugge.
I prefer Ghent as a homebase. Ghent is one of my favorite cites. Ghent. Bruges is barely worth a full day. If you want peace and quiet at night, Brugge. If you want some nightlife, less souvenir shops and overall better restaurants, Ghent. I personally prefer Ghent.
