GIRLSCHOOL originated in the U.K. during the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene in 1978 and is frequently associated with contemporaries and friends MOTÖRHEAD . They are the longest-running all-female rock band, still active and rocking hard after more than 40 years.

Formed from a school band called PAINTED LADY by Kim McAuliffe and Enid Williams , GIRLSCHOOL enjoyed strong media exposure and commercial success in the U.K. in the early 1980s with three albums of "punk-tinged metal" and a few singles.

In the 1990s and 2000s, they concentrated their efforts on live shows and tours, reducing considerably the production of studio albums. During their long career GIRLSCHOOL toured all over the world, performing at many of the biggest rock and metal festivals as well as co-headlining with or supporting some of the most important hard rock and heavy metal bands in the genre.

They maintain a worldwide cult following and are considered an inspiration for many succeeding female rock musicians, such as THE DONNAS .

Original members McAuliffe and Denise Dufort are still in the band to this day. Original lead guitarist Kelly Johnson died of cancer in 2007 and was replaced by Jackie Chambers in 1999.

In January 2019, GIRLSCHOOL parted ways once again with bassist Williams , making way for the return of Tracey Lamb (formerly of ROCK GODDESS and GIRLSCHOOL 1987-1991 and 1993-2000),solidifying the band's lineup for future live shows and recordings.

GIRLSCHOOL 's 14th studio album "WTFortyfive?" is an outstanding and deliciously dirty declaration that age is a number that shows how much real raw attitude you have when it really counts. Kim , Denise , Jackie and Tracey leave the grit under their fingernails and the scuzz on their crusty leather boots as they riff and stomp their way through 12 statements of intent showing major attitude, some great melodies, and a consistent crunch to every guitar.

GIRLSCHOOL is:

Kim McAuliffe : rhythm guitar, lead and backing vocals Denise Dufort : drums Tracey Lamb : bass guitar Jackie Chambers : lead guitar, backing vocals

Went to see Girlschool supporting Rose Tattoo in the Voodoo Lounge on Saturday night the 8th of september..they were on fire...going thru 40 years of burning up stages...from the first minute they came on stage they took the voodoo lounge apart..with their blistering guitars and sounding like it was 1980 they ripped into Hit 'N'Run and Race with the Devil..love the sory of getting Ronnie James Dio to sing on their Legacy album aswell as a little known guitarist called Tony Iomini...They still make an old very happy..wow! That 40 years flew...

Originating in the U.K. amid the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement in 1978, GIRLSCHOOL has cemented their status as the longest-running all-female rock band. Over four decades later, they remain a driving force in the rock scene, often associated with peers and friends MOTÖRHEAD .

Founded as PAINTED LADY by Kim McAuliffe and Enid Williams , GIRLSCHOOL achieved notable success in the early 1980s in the U.K. with three albums characterized by “punk-tinged metal” and several singles.

While the 1990s and 2000s saw a shift towards live performances and tours, the band continued to captivate audiences worldwide. GIRLSCHOOL graced the stages of major rock and metal festivals, co-headlining with or supporting some of the most influential acts in the hard rock and heavy metal genre.

GIRLSCHOOL holds an enduring global fanbase and serves as an inspiration for countless emerging female rock musicians, including THE DONNAS .

The band’s original members Kim McAuliffe and Denise Dufort persist in leading the charge, maintaining their roles to this day. Unfortunately, original lead guitarist Kelly Johnson passed away from cancer in 2007, succeeded by Jackie Chambers in 1999.

In January 2019, GIRLSCHOOL bid farewell to bassist Enid Williams , ushering in the return of Tracey Lamb (formerly of ROCK GODDESS and a previous stint with GIRLSCHOOL from 1987-1991 and 1993-2000), solidifying the lineup for future live performances and recording endeavors.

GIRLSCHOOL  is touring in support of their latest studio album,  “WTFortyfive?” , which arrived in July via  Silver Lining Music .

The four members of Girlschool pose in front of a black wall

From the vantage point of the present, it’s difficult to appreciate just how few women were playing in hard and heavy bands in the late 70s and early 80s. Despite groundbreaking artists such as Fanny, Heart, Suzi Quatro, and the Runaways, the notion of an all-woman rock ’n’ roll group was largely dismissed by a male-dominated music industry, while music journalists often seemed to be paraphrasing English lexicographer Samuel Johnson in his denigration of woman preachers: “Sir, a woman’s shredding is like a dog’s walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.” That’s all to say it took major huevos for the four women behind Girlschool to launch their metal outfit in 1978.

Between 1980 and 1982, the Londoners dropped a trio of excellent albums— Demolition , Hit and Run , and Screaming Blue Murder —that established them as major players in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Their stripped-down, punk-inflected music was devastatingly effective, and though their profile certainly benefited from the friendship and patronage of Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, he’d be the first to admit they didn’t need him. (The two bands joined forces as Headgirl in 1981 and released the EP St. Valentine’s Day Massacre , which was certified silver in the UK thanks to their scorching cover of “Please Don’t Touch” by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates.)

Girlschool have soldiered on ever since, enduring lineup changes and losses, including the departure of original bassist Enid Wilson in 2019 and the death of original lead guitarist Kelly Johnson from cancer in 2007. Last year, they released their 14th studio album, WTFortyfive? , their first since 2015’s Guilty as Sin , and you could say they came back with a bang. The record is fierce and clean, with a timeless sound that speaks to their early classics but could fit neatly into any era of their 45-year run. Ever since I heard that Girlschool are retiring from the tour circuit following this string of U.S. dates, everything on WTFortyfive ? sounds to me like a reflection of a job well done—if not always fairly appreciated. “It Is What It Is” is defiantly resigned, the spooky gothic vampire tale “Cold Dark Heart” is sinister and romantic, and “Barmy Army” (named for the band’s original fan club) is a heartfelt thank-you to the legions who’ve followed them all these decades. Guitarist Joe Stump, who plays with Los Angeles metal greats Alcatrazz (Girlschool’s current tourmates), makes a guest appearance on “Are You Ready?”—and yes, yes he is! They close the album with a cover of Motörhead’s “Born to Raise Hell,” which features Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell, Saxon singer Biff Byford, and Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan. This just may be Girlschool’s final Chicago appearance, so make it a priority.

Girlschool’s final North American tour coming to Broken Goblet

Guitarist Jackie Chambers shares details on the all-female rock band’s impressive 46-year history

Samantha Bambino, The Times

Throughout the history of rock music, the genre has always been largely male-dominated. From Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, it’s a rarity to find an all-female band, let alone one with lasting success in the industry.

But Girlschool is the exception.

Comprised of Jackie Chambers, Kim McAuliffe, Denise Dufort and Tracey Lamb, the London-based group, known for hit tracks like “Demolition Boys” and “Emergency,” formed in 1978. Forty-six years later, these ladies are still going strong. In fact, the NWOBHM (new wave of British heavy metal) legends make up the longest-tenured all-women rock band in history.

Recently, Girlschool announced that it’s embarking on its final North American tour, which includes a stop at Broken Goblet Brewing, 2500 State Road in Bensalem, on March 27, with Lillian Axe and Alcatrazz also on the bill.

Ahead of the show, The Times caught up with Chambers to discuss the decision behind this last U.S. tour, the unbreakable camaraderie that she and her bandmates share, and what it means to still be doing what she loves at almost 60 years old.

According to Chambers, the reason why Girlschool won’t be heading to the states for long stretches anymore is simple.

“It’s just getting too expensive,” Chambers admitted. “We can’t afford it. The visas were thousands of dollars just to get us there, and that’s before booking hotels, ground transport, crew, petrol, food. We’re definitely not gonna make any money. We might even lose money.”

Plus, the women of Girlschool are getting older. Chambers is on the brink of turning 60, and the rest of the band is already there. Since it’s usually five or six years between each U.S. run, Chambers doesn’t envision them enduring a grueling travel schedule at almost 70.

However, Chambers stressed, this is not the end of Girlschool. After the North American tour, which is hitting the east coast now and west coast this summer, the band will continue performing overseas and isn’t opposed to returning to the U.S. for a one-off gig.

“A lot of people, when they saw that on Facebook, they started panicking,” said Chambers. “They’re like, ‘Oh, you’re quitting! Is this it?’ No, no, no, just America. It’s too expensive. It’s priced everybody out.”

Being on the road, especially in a foreign country, can certainly get tiresome … especially if you’re among bad company. However, Chambers proudly shared that Girlschool is like a sisterhood. This means that, even while traveling together for countless hours per day, they still enjoy being around each other.

“It’s all good fun. We’re all really good friends, which is always helpful in a band, especially with women,” she said. “We’ve always got something to talk about, which seems incredible to other bands. It’s like, ‘What have you still got to say? You talk all day long!’ We even talk to each other on stage.”

Their friendship — and true passion for the music — is what has kept Girlschool together for the past 46 years.

“It’s all about being friends and just enjoying what you do,” said Chambers. “If you don’t enjoy it, you’re never gonna stay together. If you’re going through the motions, it shows on stage. If you’re not enjoying it, it shows on stage. So we definitely do still enjoy it, otherwise we wouldn’t be doing it.”

Girlschool, founded by McAuliffe and Enid Williams, has undergone a few lineup changes over the years. After original lead guitarist Kelly Johnson was diagnosed with cancer, she left the band and was replaced by Chambers in 1999. Johnson lost her battle in 2007. Then, in 2019, Girlschool parted ways with bassist Williams and brought back Lamb, a former member. Currently, McAuliffe and Dufort are the only Girlschool originals.

Despite their varying tenures, nobody can believe that the band has seen such lasting success.

“It’s a strange one, isn’t it? I mean, 25 years to me is, it’s just gone really quickly,” said Chambers. “And I asked Kim and Denise, because they’re the only two who have been in right from the beginning, and they’re like, ‘Forty-five years has just gone like that really.’ And we never split up either, so it’s literally 46 years.”

Throughout Girlschool’s history, it has released numerous studio albums (including 2023’s WTFortyFive ), performed at major rock and metal festivals, and toured all over the world. Still, one of its biggest achievements is serving as inspiration to other women who want to play rock music.

“Everytime we do a gig, a girl comes up to us and says, ‘Because of you, I picked up guitar,’ or, ‘Because of you, I picked up drums,’ which is always wonderful to hear,” Chambers said.

Plus, in addition to longtime fans, the next generation of Girlschool listeners are showing up for concerts, many of whom were introduced to the band by their mom.

“It’s just amazing to hear that, and it’s still relevant today. We’re still relevant apparently. This is a good thing!,” said Chambers. “And having a new album out that’s done quite well is great because new people are coming to see us now.”

At Broken Goblet, attendees will hear music spanning Girlschool’s entire career, including numerous fan-favorites from the 1981 album Hit and Run and a handful of tracks from last year’s release that celebrated the 45-year milestone. While it’s impossible to please everyone, Chambers believes the setlist they came up with is the perfect blend of classic and fresh.

Post-North American tour, Chambers doesn’t have plans to slow down anytime soon. In addition to performing at festivals with Girlschool, she also has dates booked for her other rock band Syteria.

“I’m fortunate enough to still be playing at my age, so I’m making the most of it,” she said. “I enjoy it still. I think if I stopped enjoying it, I would quit. But I still love it. So I’m out there playing as much as possible.”

About girlschool.

Girlschool are a British rock band that formed in the new wave of British heavy metal scene in 1978 and frequently associated with contemporaries Motörhead. They are the longest running all-female rock band, still active after more than 35 years. Formed from a school band called Painted Lady, Girlschool enjoyed strong media exposure and commercial success in the UK in the early 1980s with three albums of 'punk-tinged metal' and a few singles, but lost their momentum in the following years. In the 1990s and 2000s, they focused on shows and tours and did few studio albums. During their career, Girlschool travelled the world, playing in many rock and metal festivals and co-headlining with or supporting important hard rock and heavy metal bands. They maintain a worldwide cult following and are an inspiration for many female rock musicians. Despite frequent changes of line-up, original members Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams and Denise Dufort are still in the band. The only original member no longer in the band, lead guitarist and singer Kelly Johnson, died of cancer in 2007.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
