Sometimes the very best tours are the ones we create for ourselves. On Isla Mujeres, all you need is a golf cart! Golf carts are a top form of transportation around this tiny Caribbean island, and visitors can easily rent them out to explore the culture, cuisine, and beauty packed into the beach-and-cliff coastline. So… how’s it done?

How to get your own golf cart in Isla Mujeres

As you exit the ferry terminal and step onto the main avenue of downtown Isla Mujeres, you’ll immediately find golf cart rental establishments just across the street (and maybe a few vendors approaching you personally offering the service). Most places will charge roughly $650 – $700 pesos for the day (between 9am and 5pm). Many places also have hourly rental rates available, but a full-day rental allows you to explore the island with more flexibility and less stress, making as many stops as you like along the way to check out Caribbean Sea views or grab a drink at one of the island’s beach bars. To rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres, all you need is a valid driver’s license. Typically the rental shop will give you a form to fill out; they’ll hold on to your license as a deposit and the form will serve as your “Isla license” for the day.

Isla Mujeres Riviera Maya

The best places to go on your golf cart adventure

While top Isla Mujeres locations like North Beach and Avenida Hidalgo are easily walkable from the ferry, a golf cart rental allows you to experience lesser-known but equally enchanting locales. The west coast of the island faces out toward the mainland, with Cancun’s hazy resort skyline visible on the horizon above the cyan-and-turquoise stripes of the ocean. The calmer western road of Isla Mujeres first passes some restaurants and small hotels before entering the central town, where most of the island locals live. Ride by the town’s colorful houses, roadside coconut stands, and beer shops before reaching a roundabout, where you can veer right to discover a hidden treasure: the west coast road between the lagoon and the ocean. This quiet road is lined in some of the most beautiful vacation homes on Isla Mujeres, as well as a few nice hotels and restaurants, and the famous turtle farm. If you’re in the mood for a break or maybe some lunch, stop at Zama Beach Club, an oceanfront restaurant where you can get sucked in and hang out on the white sand beach, or just have a quick drink then keep exploring – it doesn’t much matter because you’re on “island time”. Once the road ends, turn back and drive back up the road, then take the right-hand road when you reach the roundabout.

The Cliffs of Punta Sur

Just past the lookout point is the entrance to Punta Sur (South Point, in English), a park at the very southern tip of the island, surrounded by cliffs and dangerously beautiful turquoise water on three sides. A small booth at the entrance requires $30 pesos per person for access. Get your bracelets and enter the park, then spend some time taking pictures from atop the cliffs and around Templo Ixchel, a real Maya temple at the edge of the park. Punta Sur is also the easternmost point in Mexico, and on each New Year’s Eve, it’s a popular place for people to gather and be the first to see the first sunrise of the new year.

Isla Mujeres

What to See on Isla Mujeres’ East Coast

The wilder east coast feels like another world from the rest of Isla Mujeres, with vacation homes to one side and small cliffs on the other. The crashing waves and craggy rocks are a sight not often seen in southeastern Mexico. As you drive north along this side of the island, you might pass a row of makeshift stands selling shell handicrafts and jewelry – the perfect pit stop. A little further north, you’ll come across the red path of a coastal walkway, complete with benches for resting and idyllic spots for photos. To finish your island golf cart tour, just continue north, back through the central town then into the main downtown area. By late afternoon, you’ll have seen most of the island for $700 pesos.

How to rent a golf cart easily by remembering these things

Most golf cart rentals on Isla Mujeres charge around $700 pesos for a full day, and some even offer hourly and half-day rates. All you need is your driver’s license and form of payment (cash or credit card). I also recommend applying sunscreen to your arms and legs; even though all golf carts will have a roof, you might (like me) fall victim to a left leg sunburn from driving on one side of the island for too long. Want to experience the island’s restaurant scene while you’re exploring? Here’s our list of our favorite places to eat on Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres Golf Cart Rental

Renting a golf cart is the easiest, safest, and most popular way to see Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres is one of the most popular destinations in all of Mexico right now. In fact, Playa Norte (“North Beach” in English) is now rated the #1 beach in the entire country— that says a lot considering that Mexico is world-renowned for its beach destinations.

But beaches aren’t the only thing that Isla Mujeres is known for. There are many other places to see as well.

If you’re curious about this island, there is no better way to get around than on an Isla Mujeres golf cart rental.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO RENT A GOLF CART HERE?

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE!

Why Rent A Golf Cart On Isla Mujeres?

There are an innumerable number of reasons why people visit Isla Mujeres.

Some come for the food. Some simply want to sunbathe at the beach. Others just want a fun-filled day trip during their vacation to Cancun. There are others who want to go snorkeling around the beautiful reefs.

For whatever reason you may have, an Isla Mujeres Golf cart rental is the most versatile way to spend a day on this island.

Explore The Entire Island

Although you may want to just sit at a beach bar and drink mojitos, there are a great many other things to see. Further down the page you can find some ideas regarding specific hotspots. However, suffice it to say that you’ll run out of time before you’ll run out of places to visit! Renting a golf cart gives you the ability to explore the entire island from ‘head to toe.’ Considering that this is “ Women’s Island ,” that might not be such a bad idea!

Avoid Rushed Herd-Like Tours

Group tours can be fun. They also offer a pre-planned itinerary that fit certain types of groups. However, if you are a free-spirited person (and you probably are if you’re visiting a foreign country), trying to make a round peg fit into a square hole just doesn’t work. An Isla Mujeres Golf Cart rental allows you to choose your own path & gives you the freedom to do so at your own pace.

No Expensive Taxis

Just like every other tourist destination in Mexico, the taxi drivers here are as criminal as the drug cartels. As a tourist, you are marked—you might as well walk around with a hundred dollar bill pasted to your forehead. If you plan on taking taxis everywhere around the island, plan on paying—a lot! An Isla Mujeres Golf Cart rental can help you avoid getting ripped off by the ruthless & evil local taxi drivers.

Keep Your Group Together

Our Isla Mujeres golf carts can comfortably hold four people. This is enough space so that several couples can enjoy cruising around the island together. You can talk, sip cold drinks, and assure that all of you have a good time together— as a group . Compare this to renting scooters or bikes where you’re all playing “follow the leader” and using nothing more than vague hand signals to communicate.

Bring Beach Accessories With You

Hauling all of your accessories to the beach can be a daunting task. A cooler, bottles, cans, coozies, towels, snacks, beach chairs, & beach umbrella—and whatever else suits your fancy. Imagine carrying this all by hand. What a nightmare! An Isla Mujeres golf cart rental makes getting both you & your belongings to the beach as easy as loading up your pickup truck for an afternoon picnic back home.

Go Off The Beaten Tourist Path

Many people come to Isla Mujeres and see all the same things. They stay on the same boring trail as everyone else. If you’re looking to get off the beaten tourist path, there is not a better way to do it than on an Isla Mujeres golf cart rental. With your own wheels, you can go wherever you want—the world famous Ice Bar , a filthy little dive bar where only locals hang out, or a quick trip to South Point ( Punta Sur ) where you can see the Mayan ruins that Isla Mujeres was named after. All is within reach on golf cart rental.

What You Get With Your Isla Mujeres Golf Cart Rental

You receive a number of things with your Isla Mujeres golf cart rental.

Of course, some things are more tangible than others. The intangibles – like having loads of fun – are not listed here because they are hard to quantify.

Below is a basic list of the things that you receive when you rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres.

4-Passenger Golf Cart

All of our golf carts can hold up to four passengers. This means that one, two, three, or four people can ride in one golf cart. If, for example, you have only two people in your group, this means that you will have extra storage for things like beach supplies, a cooler, etc. It is completely up to you how many golf carts you rent.

Unlimited Miles / Kilometers

We put no limitations on how far you can go with your Isla Mujeres golf cart rental. However, you need to stay on the island— and of course, you need to stay out of the water! Other than those obvious limitations, you are free to drive anywhere on the island that is legally permitted.

Full Tank Of Gas

You will receive your Isla Mujeres golf cart with a full tank of gas. Depending on how you drive, and also how far you drive, you may use up all the gasoline in your golf cart. It is your responsibility to return the golf cart with a full tank of gas so that it is ready for the next customer. Be a good person; pay it forward!

Local Expertise

As mentioned on several other occasions throughout this page, we are local experts when it comes to Isla Mujeres. We eat, sleep, and breathe this island, so we know all of the special hangouts that a first-time visitor may not comprehend. If you need any special recommendations or expert advice, feel free to ask us. This advice is included for FREE with your golf cart rental Isla Mujeres.

Why Rent A Golf Cart With Us?

As with most popular activities, there are always options.

As far as we’re concerned, we don’t have any true competitors.

However, there are other golf cart rental outfits that offer services somewhat comparable to us. So the question then becomes, “Why should I rent from you?”

Below are a few of the many reasons:

Online Reservations

Ask anyone who has spent a lot of time on Isla Mujeres & they will all tell you the same thing: If you want to rent a golf cart, make sure you arrive early because golf carts are completely rented out by early afternoon. This is true in both high & low season. However, because we accept online reservations, you can assure that you will have a golf cart earmarked & ready for you the moment you get off the ferry. (NOTE: There is a 3-hour minimum rental for online reservations.) Reserve online & save lots of time!

Immaculate Golf Carts

Nobody visiting Isla Mujeres is trying to enter a golf cart beauty contest. However, it is nice to have a golf cart that looks good while cruising around Isla Mujeres. Moreover, dependability is an important factor—the last thing you want is to have your rental golf cart Isla Mujeres break down on the far side of the island while out & about. This is exactly why we do everything we can in order to maintain our rental golf carts in the best condition possible. We worry about our golf carts so you don’t have to.

Best Pricing On Island

Most people like to save money while on vacation. It’s always nice to have financial options wherever you go. We rent our golf carts on Isla Mujeres for the lowest possible price so that you can save all your money for the many other activities that are available on the island. Also, like the proverb says, ” Time is money.” By reserving your scooter in advance you can save time by having a golf cart here waiting for you upon arrival. Either way, you win.

We Know Isla Mujeres

Many people have questions about where to go and what to see while renting a golf cart on Isla Mujeres. Because we live here, we know the island very well. Want to know which beaches are most beautiful? Just ask. Trying to figure out which beach bar has the best margaritas? We have several suggestions. Want to visit some ancient Mayan ruins? We can give you the simple GPS coordinates. We eat, sleep, and breathe the island lifestyle, so we can help you find whatever you’re looking for.

Locally-Owned Company

Unfortunately, many of the businesses on Isla Mujeres are run by people who don’t live here. In traditional business terms, this is called “ absentee ownership .” When paid employees are the only people running a business, there is a disconnect in the relationship between owners and customers. By running the business ourselves, we adjust & adapt our business model to best suit your needs.

One-Stop Shop

Renting golf carts on Isla Mujeres is our specialty. However, we also rent bikes and scooters. Whether you are looking to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres, a scooter, or a bike— we’ve got you covered. Also, we deliver golf carts, scooters, or bikes to the same convenient location (right next to the ferry dock). This makes meeting up for your delivery both personal and fast. Why shop with multiple companies when it’s easier to do everything at once?

Best Customer Service

We take a tremendous amount of pride in how we treat our customers. We do our best to make sure that our service meets or exceeds standards across the island— and once we’ve set our own standards, we try to better our own best. We fully understand that our business depends on you— our customers. This is the primary reason our customers come back again & again & again.

Ferry Dock Meeting Point

Because we deliver directly to the ferry dock, our meeting point is unique & convenient. While most companies are tied to a traditional “brick-and-mortar” store, we are not. We work exclusively online which allows us to deliver your Isla Mujeres golf cart rental as close to the ferry dock as is possible. No other company makes it as convenient as we do.

Places To Visit When Renting A Golf Cart On Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a very cozy & cute island. It has a quaint vibe that transcends into an international panoply of visitors from all the inhabitable continents of the globe. This is largely in part because of the plethora of things to do.

An Isla Mujeres golf cart rental is the pinnacle of options because it opens the door to so many other options.

Like a maze, the island is best to navigate by beginning with a starting point and working your way through. It’s thoroughly enjoyable to get lost along the way, but you are best off starting with a few primary pit stops that have been designated before starting your journey. Below you will find some of our favorite points of interest.

Not all Isla Mujeres beaches were created equal. However, there are some must-sees that we strongly recommend visiting. Here’s some trivia for you: Did you know that the #1-Rated beach in all of Mexico is right here on Isla Mujeres? That’s right!—and it’s called Playa Norte (North Beach in English). Here are a few recommendations:

  • Playa Norte
  • Playa Tiburon
  • Playa Indios

Isla Mujeres is known for its variety of bars. Some are directly on the beach. Some have such a distinct vibe that they are hard to even categorize. Whether you want to listen to Rock (you’re definitely cool), Caribbean Calypso, or are enamored with Mexican music, you can find it live on Isla Mujeres. There are also some bars that are just unique & cool. Here are a few that we recommend:

  • Ice Bar Website / Ice Bar Map
  • Isla Brewing Company
  • Tiny Gecko Bar

Restaurants

If you’re into traditional Mexican food, you’ll be in seventh heaven on Isla Mujeres. Think tacos, ceviche, burritos, charcoal-cooked skirt steaks. If you like seafood, you will probably go bananas. Imagine fresh fish, lobster, shrimp cocktails, & octopus. And if you are just a plain old meat & potatoes eater, there are plenty of burger & french fry joints. Here are a few recommendations:

  • La Kantina De Los Tacos De Humo
  • Lola Valentina
  • Mango Cafe Isla

Beach Clubs

Life just wouldn’t be the same on Isla Mujeres without the many beach clubs you’ll find scattered across the island. Each one has a different vibe & feel. However, one thing that you can be absolutely sure about is this: The drinking starts just a few hours after sunrise and continues well beyond sunset. All of these are easier to reach with an Isla Mujeres golf cart rental. Here are a few of the more unique & popular beach clubs that we recommend on the island:

  • Green Demon Beach Club
  • Oceanvs Beach Club
  • Tarzan Beach Club

Shopping is almost an institution on the island. If you are looking for T-shirts, hats, tequila, shot glasses, or locally handcrafted souvenirs, there is no better place to find them than on Isla Mujeres. Your Isla Mujeres golf cart rental will allow you to make quick work of bringing back some relics from your trip and finding gifts for those who were not as fortunate to go on vacation with you. You can even use your golf cart rental for something as simple as grocery shopping. The following are some of our favorite shopping stops:

  • Avenida Miguel Hidalgo (Souvenir Central)
  • Mercado Municipal
  • Chedraui (Liquor / Groceries)

Sightseeing

If eye-candy is your thing, you’ll find plenty of that on almost all of the local beaches. Nonetheless, if that is not gratifying enough, there are lots of other places to see. Mayan Ruins, a baby turtle sanctuary, a humble church with a direct ocean view, the main city square, etc….(ad nauseum). Your Isla Mujeres golf cart rental puts all of the following—and more—within reach:

  • Punta Sur (South Point)
  • Isla Mujeres Monument (Great Photos)
  • Downtown Isla Mujeres
  • Church of the Lady Guadalupe ( Capilla de Guadalupe )

Where Are We Located?

Unlike most golf cart rental businesses here, we do not have a physical location.

We operate exclusively online & use a designated pickup / drop-off point to meet clients.

This works much more convenient for both us & our customers. Here are several reasons why:

We Operate Exclusively Online

Our clients are the intelligent types who like to research & plan their vacation ahead of time (instead of just “winging it” upon arrival). Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with spontaneity, if you want to GUARANTEE a golf cart upon arrival, you absolutely must book in advance. We make that possible via online reservations .

We Pass On The Savings To Our Customers

Not having to rent an expensive downtown storefront saves us money. Of course, we still have to rent garage space, move our golf carts around, and hire someone to wash & maintain our golf carts. However, we do save money and pass this savings on to our customers as much as we can.

Convenient Meeting Location

Because we operate online, we are able to meet you at a place that is ultra convenient— in fact, we pick you up right as you get off the ferry. How’s that for personal service? Other golf cart rental companies on Isla Mujeres offer nothing near that level of service and convenience. We do it every day—with every customer!

Our Meeting Point Is Super Easy To Find

Once you make a reservation with us, we tell you exactly where we’ll meet & how to contact us in case there is any confusion. With the ease of smartphones & messaging apps, this process is very simple. You make your reservation online. We tell you EXACTLY where to pickup up your Isla Mujeres golf cart rental. Very easy & super secure.

The following map shows you our meeting point in relation to the Cancun  –> Isla Mujeres ferry dock.

We are VERY EASY to find.

And if you have any problems you can call us or send us a message via WhatsApp.

Isla Mujeres Golf Cart Rental Prices

Our Isla Mujeres golf cart rental prices are based on how long you rent & whether or not it is low season or high season.

If you need a golf cart (or several golf carts) longer than any of the times listed below, please contact us so that we can come up with an extraordinary price for you.

The following are our current prices:

NOTE: WE HAVE A 3-HOUR MINIMUM RENTAL POLICY

Because we deliver our Isla Mujeres golf carts directly to you, there is a considerable amount of time put into each customer transaction. Consequently, we do not rent golf carts for less than three hours.

But trust us— there are so many things to see and do on Isla Mujeres—3 hours will probably not be enough for you anyways!

1-Hour Rental Price (3-Hour Minimum)

Includes The Following:

Full Day Rental Price (10:AM - 6:PM)

24 hour rental price (10:am-10:am), weekly rental price (7 consecutive days), isla mujeres golf cart rental requirements.

There are several requirements that must be met in order to rent an Isla Mujeres golf cart with us.

Unfortunately, these requirements are non-negotiable because they help keep both us and you safe.

Of course, if you have any questions about our rental requirements, feel free to contact us at any time.

Her are the requirements to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres:

21+ Years Old

In order to rent a scooter from us, you must be 21 years old. We have found that maturity comes with age (for most people), & accident rates drop dramatically after around 20 or 21 years. This is why you must be at least 21 to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres. Why do you think automobile insurance agencies charge dramatically more for younger drivers than they do for older ones? Enough said.

Valid Driver's License

A valid driver’s license from your state/country is all you need to legally operate a vehicle in Mexico. Thus, a valid driver’s license is mandatory to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres. This is both to prove that you’ve had at least a minimum amount of experience driving and to prove who you are in case of liability. We take a photo of your ID (front & back). We return it to you at the end of your contract. Simple, quick, & easy.

Everyone likes to have a drink now and again. However, there is a time and a place for getting face-plant drunk. Driving around on busy streets full of traffic and pedestrians is definitely NOT the time to be drinking and driving! If you are drunk when you come to meet us, don’t think for a second that you’re going to drive away with a golf cart! The police here have a zero-tolerance policy for drinking & driving —and so do we.

Damage Deposit

We want you to take care of our Isla Mujeres golf carts. In fact, we want you to treat them as if they were your own. Consequently, we ask for a token (and somewhat nominal) deposit of $100 USD per golf cart.  This must be paid in cash and is returned to you at the end of your rental period—so long as you golf cart is returned in the same condition that you received it. The deposit also helps keep people from beating the heck out of our golf carts, which can cost a lot in maintenance and repairs.

Isla Mujeres , Mexico

Renting a golf cart in isla mujeres, mexico.

golf cart rental in isla mujeres

Isla Mujeres in Mexico might not be big, but there’s plenty to see all over the island. The best way to do it is by renting a golf cart and exploring at your own pace. There’s a reason golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres are so popular. Not only they’re fun to drive, but they also give you freedom to stop anytime you want, for however long you want.

El Centro, which is the downtown of Isla Mujeres, is the most popular area and where you’ll find Playa Norte, most hotels, restaurants and entertainment. Everything there is within a walking distance from the ferry. But if you just stick to that one area, you’ll be missing a lot of beauty. Some of the top things to do in Isla Mujeres , as well as amazing hidden gems, are scattered all over the island. Also, several of the best restaurants are located in center of the island. By having your own golf cart, you can get to it all within minutes. So whether you are taking a day trip to Isla Mujeres or staying for a few days, renting one is a must.

Driving in Isla Mujeres is very easy and you won’t get lost, even if you tried. The island is 5 miles long and half a mile wide at its widest point. Getting from one end of the island to the other takes about 30 minutes non stop, but trust me, you’ll be stopping plenty.

Renting a golf cart in Isla Mujeres

If this your first time visiting and renting a golf cart in Isla Mujeres, you probably have a few questions. I’ve been to the island more than once, each time rented one and spent a lot of time driving around. I put together this guide, to hopefully make the process more clear and answer the most common questions.

Where to rent a golf cart in Isla Mujeres

The short answer is, pretty much everywhere. There are many golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres and the second you step off the ferry, you will be approached with offers. Majority of the golf cart rental offices are located in El Centro, which is the downtown area of the island.

What kind of golf carts are available

Most of the golf carts in Isla Mujeres are regular carts, that can seat up to 4 people. Some companies offer large 6 person golf carts, but those are harder to find. If you are traveling with a big group, you might have to rent multiple golf carts, if the large ones are not available

  • Regular Golf Cart – capacity for up to 4 people, with 2 seats facing front and 2 facing back
  • Large Golf Cart – for max 4 people with all seats facing front. There’s an additional storage bin, perfect for your luggage or a trip to the supermarket
  • Large 6 person Golf Cart – capacity for up to 6 people, 4 seats facing front and 2 facing back.

You can rent the golf cart by the hour, for the day or for 24 hours. If you’d like to have a golf cart just for the day, I recommend getting a 24 hour rental over a daily one. Daily rentals are usually 9 am – 5 pm , so that kind of cuts your day of exploring short. With the 24 hour rental you have more flexibility and don’t need to worry about returning your cart on time. Just make sure your hotel has parking for it ( most do ).

A lot of companies will deliver the golf cart to your hotel or meet you at the ferry. Before you drive away, check that your golf cart is in tact ( working headlights, rare view mirror etc ).

Do you need to pre-book your golf cart?

If you are looking for a rental just for a few hours or for the day, there’s no need to pre-book. If you’d like it for 24 hours or multiple days, definitely make a reservation ahead of time. Especially if you are traveling in high season or during popular holidays. With so many golf carts on the island, you think there’s no shortage, but they do book up during the busiest parts of the year. So my main Isla Mujeres golf cart rental tip would be to reserve your cart ahead of time.

What do you need to rent a golf cart

In order to rent a golf cart in Isla Mujeres, you need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. Your license will be kept until you return your golf cart.

Avenida Rueda Medina in Isla Mujeres, Mexico

How much does it cost

Even though there are many golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres, the prices are pretty consistent. The market is pretty competitive and there’s really little room for discounts and deals. The prices include the use of the golf cart, fuel, taxes and liability insurance. Expect prices to be higher in high season or during popular holiday weekends. Also, some companies might have a 4 minimum rental, if you plan on renting one during the busiest times of the year.

Below is the price range for golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres in 2024:

  • Hourly rental – 450 – 500 MXN per hour
  • Daily rental – 1,100 – 1,400 MXN
  • 24 hour rental – 1,500 -1,700 MXN

Obviously the hourly rental is the worst deal and a couple of hours doesn’t really give you enough time to explore. Daily rental is perfect if you are just taking a day trip to Isla Mujeres and will be catching a ferry back to Cancun at the end of the day. But if you are staying on the island for a few days, I recommend the 24 hour rental, even if you want the golf cart for just one day. It’s only slightly more expensive, but you don’t need to worry about returning it by a certain time.

Best golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres

There are plenty of golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres, so finding one is never a problem, but that can also leave you wondering which one to choose.

Mega Ciro’s de Caribe Golf Cart Rental is one of the favorites. They have been on the island for a very long time, they are reliable and their carts are in great condition. Because of the great service they provide, they are one of the most popular golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres, so definitely reserve your cart ahead of time. Their office is located at Avenida Guerrero, next to Banco Azteca .

Other well liked and highly rated golf cart rentals in Isla Mujeres are:

  • Isla Mujeres Golf Carts Indios – their office is located at Av Juárez 20
  • Rentadora Ppe’s – located on Hidalgo Ave
  • Prisma Golf Cart Rentals – located on Ave Ruida Medina, less than 2 blocks from the Ultamar ferry ( across the street from the 7 Muelle restaurant ).

Driving a golf cart in Isla Mujeres – things to know

Drinking and driving.

Isla Mujeres has a zero tolerance policy for drinking and driving, and that includes golf carts. This is due to way too many alcohol related accidents over the years involving tourists, who treat the golf cart more like a toy, not a means of transportation. This behavior is very common, especially among the day trippers from Cancún. Driving with the open alcohol container is illegal and that applies to passengers as well. There are police check points across the island to enforce it. And trust me, you do not want to deal with the police in Mexico.

If you’d like to bar hop all over the island, there are always plenty of taxis available and they are pretty cheap. Every bar will be happy to call one for you.

If you’d like to explore the island by golf cart and check out some of the fun bars along the way, there’s a great tour you can take. Isla Driver Robby offers a 6 hour golf cart tour, taking you to some of most popular spots in Isla Mujeres, as well as the hidden gems, you probably would never discover on your own. If you’d like to stop for great food and hit a couple of fun bars along the way, he’ll take you there. This way you don’t need to worry about drinking and driving.

Speed bumps

Watch out for speed bumps! There are a lot of them around the island, especially when you get into more congested areas like Centro or La Gloria. They come up quick and are easy to miss, especially if you are driving at night.

Stay to the right

Remember you’re sharing the road with cars, mopeds and other golf carts and most of these will be going faster than you. It’s perfectly fine to enjoy your scenic drive, but keep to the right side of the road and let the faster traffic pass you.

You can park your golf cart anywhere, unless it’s stated otherwise. A white sign with an E crossed over is a No parking sign in Mexico. You might also see a sign Prohibido Estacionarse , which means no parking in Spanish. Also, yellow on the curb means no parking.

The definite No parking areas are Malecón ( board walk, that starts at the Isla Mujeres sign and runs along the Caribbean side ), Avenida Hidalgo ( the main street with stores and restaurants ) and the street right by the ferry.

Parking in Centro can be tight, but not impossible. There are plenty of spaces, but unless you come early in the day, you might have to loop around a couple of times to find an open spot. If you are good at parallel parking, it will come in handy. All the streets in Centro are one way, so pay attention.

Once you get out of Centro, parking is not a problem. You can pull over on the side of the road pretty much everywhere.

Isla Mujeres golf cart rentals tips

  • Make sure your golf cart has working lights, especially if you plan on driving at night
  • Don’t leave any valuables or personal belongings in the cart when you park.
  • Lock your cart every time you park somewhere and leave. All the golf carts look similar and many use the same exact key, so it’s easy to take the wrong one by mistake.
  • Don’t let your kids drive the golf cart – if they are not old enough to drive a car, they are not allowed to drive a golf cart either.

Where to go on your golf cart

There’s so much to see on the island and the list of stops you can make is endless. From the biggest attractions to lesser known spots and places you discover by just driving around, Below are just a few suggestions of places to visit while exploring Isla Mujeres on your golf cart.

  • Punta Sur – the southernmost point of the island with dramatic views of the coastline and some of the best views in Isla Mujeres. An absolute must stop, no matter how long your stay is.
  • Guadalupe Chapel – simple, but beautiful church sitting up on the hill with amazing views of the ocean.
  • Isla Brewery – a must stop for anyone who loves craft beer. Pick up a couple of bottles to bring to your hotel.
  • Mango Cafe – one of the best breakfast places on the island.

Hi, thanks for all the information you provided. We were considering using Prima to rent a golf care ahead of time as you’d mentioned they received high ratings and highly liked. They do not have good ratings on Google, and some of the reviews are terrible. You have rented through them and had a great experience? I’m very nervous to rent through them.

' src=

Yes, I have rented from them a couple of times on my past trips to Isla Mujeres and personally had a great experience. I would however choose Ciro’s over them if you get a chance.

Isla Mujeres Tour Chosen As One Of The Best Experiences In The Mexican Caribbean

One of the biggest tourism conventions in Mexico was recently held in Acapulco, the Tianguis Turístico de Acapulco 2024 .

At the conference, tourism officials, hospitality stakeholders, and service providers discuss all things related to tourism.

They also hand out awards in various categories, one of which is the “Unknown Mexico” category, and one Mexican Caribbean destination was given a prestigious award within that category.

Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres, located off of the coast of Cancun, is a beautiful island paradise, and a tour to this island was chosen as one of the best experiences in the Mexican Caribbean.

Let’s dive into what makes this island so special and look at some of the tours you can take to this tropical paradise.

Isla Mujeres – A Tiny Island With Huge Appeal

Isla Mujeres is one of the smallest islands that you can visit in the Mexican Caribbean.

It measures just 4.3 miles in length and is less than a half-mile wide.

Despite its small size, though, Isla Mujeres has a lot to offer.

Plenty of beaches, hotels, restaurants, and attractions make it the perfect Mexican Caribbean destination for those looking for a more laid-back experience but don’t want to sacrifice all of the amenities of the larger destinations.

Aerial View of Playa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres

Three Interesting Facts About Isla Mujeres

While Isla Mujeres is similar in many ways to other Mexican Caribbean destinations, it is also unique.

There are three interesting facts that we’ll share with you that might make the island even more appealing.

  • Isla Mujeres is the first place in Mexico to see the sunrise, as the first rays of the sun to touch the country land on the island.
  • Isla Mujeres is home to the largest underwater sculpture museum in the world.
  • Isla Mujeres is one of Mexico’s “Magic Towns,” designated so because of its laid-back atmosphere, colorful buildings, and Caribbean vibe.

Sculpture at the Underwater Museum of Art in Isla Mujeres

Best Way To Explore The Island

While unlike on the nearby island of Holbox, cars are allowed on the island of Isla Mujeres, it’s still not the best way to see the island.

You’ll see more tourists exploring the island by golf cart or scooter.

These forms of transportation allow you access to all of the little nooks and crannies around the island that can’t be reached by car.

How dozens of golf carts started vanishing around Pinellas County

  • Jack Prator Times staff

The golf carts started vanishing in early January, one after another.

Among the first to go was a black cart with a deep-tinted windshield, alligator leather seat cushions and a polished wood steering wheel. It was furnished with a lift kit, which meant the driver and up to three passengers towered above other carts.

“It was custom,” said its owner, Jennifer Houston of Palm Harbor. “That makes it even harder.”

Then a cart disappeared from a boat marina. Another from a waterfront condo. Over the following weeks, golf carts went missing from places as disparate as a Clearwater mobile home park, a South Pasadena bowling alley and the Don CeSar resort in St. Pete Beach.

The carts were stolen under cover of night and in broad daylight. From parking lots of bustling businesses to backyards in quiet neighborhoods.

The pattern that was emerging suggested one thing: a serial golf cart thief.

In the end, authorities followed the investigative trail of nearly two dozen cart thefts across Pinellas County to one man.

And as the man would later tell detectives, his life took a dark turn after a devastating drug addiction left him alone and penniless.

It was only then that he stumbled into the illicit and lucrative world of stolen golf carts.

A rented truck and stolen trailer

After babysitting her grandkids in Sarasota and making the late-night drive home, Laura Stover walked past the garage and up the stairs to her waterfront condo in Isla Del Sol.

“When I got up in the morning, I went into the kitchen and looked out the window and the golf cart was gone,” the lifelong St. Petersburg resident said. “My husband didn’t believe it.”

It had been a retirement gift and her preferred method for hauling bait, rods and tackle to fish along local beaches. Stover had only owned the cart for two months before it disappeared.

Luckily, the golf cart — valued at about $12,500 — was insured. She’s already ordered a replacement: It’s bright red and easier to spot if carried off by thieves.

“I just felt like that ruined my Caribbean blue one,” she said.

As it was spirited away, Stover’s golf cart provided an important clue thanks to the Florida SunPass transponder attached to it.

On the morning that Stover reported the theft, Feb. 18, the cart pinged her with a SunPass alert. It had — just before 9:30 am — passed through a Skyway Bridge toll booth.

“That’s kind of what cracked the case,” she said.

Toll booth photos showed her cart strapped to a trailer towed by a rental truck. Using the unique ID number on the truck, detectives learned it had been rented from a nearby Home Depot on Jan. 4, just days before the first carts were reported stolen.

The trailer, detectives later learned, had been stolen in the middle of the afternoon off busy Bay Boulevard on the Treasure Island end of John’s Pass.

Once they learned the name of the man who had rented the truck, detectives found their suspect was already in jail. A warrant for his arrest had been served two days after Stover’s golf cart was reported stolen.

The wanted man had missed a court date in a case of another golf cart that was stolen in June.

He had been charged then with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of burglary. A month later, he posted $22,000 bail and was released.

After he missed a court date and was on the lam, authorities finally caught up with him on Jan. 20. He was arrested in the rental truck at a Pinellas Park dentist office. Deputies found crack and a pipe inside the vehicle.

The man gave them a fake name: Jun Crabtree. But he told detectives he “had to try,” and quickly corrected himself, according to an arrest report.

His real name, detectives learned, was Joseph Damico.

An admission of guilt

Damico, 50, appeared on a small screen at the Pinellas County Jail visitation center wearing an orange jumpsuit. He picked up the landline phone receiver and detailed the months-long drug binge that landed him there.

“I lost everything. And I’m not that person,” he told the Tampa Bay Times, stifling sobs. “I don’t know how to explain how anything happened. I affected a lot of people.”

Over the following half hour, Damico politely declined to answer questions about his case. He also declined to say anything about where the golf carts ended up and if his buyer knew they were stolen.

Just weeks earlier, his honesty had landed him deeper in trouble, he said. In a jail interview with a detective, the Holiday man admitted to stealing 22 golf carts in Pinellas County that he traded in Manatee County for money and drugs.

Damico said deputies had promised they would divert him to a substance abuse clinic if he confessed.

“They told me they were going to help me,” he said.

Instead, the agency tacked on more charges.

Damico now faces 28 of them, including multiple counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, dealing in stolen property and drug possession.

Detectives with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on the case, citing an active investigation.

Damico’s rap sheet is filled with more than 20 felonies.

In 1998, he pleaded guilty to attacking a law enforcement officer and two counts of armed escape. Damico was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

“I went to prison for a long time,” he said. “I got out and I had a plan — a really strong plan — that I just was not going to be this kind of person, that me being in jail was something that was never going to happen again.”

After his release in 2018, Damico became a certified diver and started an underwater construction and welding business. He bought a house in Holiday with his fiancé and her two children.

“That’s me,” Damico said. “Not this. This is not me. But it doesn’t matter now.”

He started using drugs early last summer. He said they helped him stay awake while working more than 90 hours each week. He realized crack cocaine could keep him up while he tinkered on his dive tools in the garage all night.

He said he’d snorted cocaine once in his youth but that nothing prepared him for the intensity of crack. His eyes widened as he recounted that first hit.

“Boy, I’ll tell you what, that kept me awake,” Damico said.

Some weeks, he didn’t sleep for three days straight.

Damico’s two-car garage had once been packed with equipment accumulated over his years working as a commercial diver. It’s now empty after he pawned all his tools for drugs.

“It was a fast spiral,” he said.

He appeared most remorseful about how his drug abuse affected his fiancé.

“I took her to Kay’s when we got engaged, and I made her cry because I bought her this really beautiful diamond ring — $4,000,” he said, sobbing and holding his head in his hands. “I pawned it, and I smoked it.”

Because of his extensive record, Damico said he may face up to 30 years in prison if he’s found guilty. Under Florida’s “points system,” prior felony convictions can play into sentencing of a new felony, earning him mandatory prison time.

Damico, who has pleaded not guilty, will face his next pre-trial hearing on April 29.

“I lost my soon-to-be wife, my business,” he said. “Everything went down the tubes. I lost it all.”

Damico is asking for a third chance at life, which may be a longshot. If he were to get out, he said he would get clean and work to repay victims. Records show he has already paid $1,000 in restitution.

“I am a hard worker. I got a strong work ethic. I take pride in my work. I care about people,” Damico said. “None of that is reflected in what I’ve been charged with, where I find myself now.

“It’s the contradictions that make things so hard,” he said.
