1. Gardens & Birds

Royal Botanical Gardens , in Burlington, is the largest botanical garden in Canada with 2700 acres of stunning gardens & sanctuaries. You can often see migrating birds as you walk along the scenic trails or sign up for a guided tour.

Mountsberg Conservation Area , part of the larger Conservation Halton, is a fascinating place, especially if you like animals and Birds of Prey! Bring the whole family and see a live Raptor up close, observe a herd of Bison or walk the trails to find nests and other animals. Brantford Twin Valley Zoo (in Brantford) and Killman Zoo (in Caledonia, just S. of Hamilton) are great places for the family to enjoy exotic animals, birds, reptiles and nature.  Check for petting areas and live animal shows!

3. History & Culture

The Joseph Brant Museum & Ireland House at Oakridge Farm in Burlington allow you to experience the history of Burlington in a unique and interactive way. Tour 40+ rooms in the 19th-century Dundurn Castle or take a ride on a full-size historic electric railway in Milton at Halton County Radial Railway. The museum is a great place for railcar enthusiasts. Kids love the Hamilton Children’s Museum‘s interactive exhibits and special events.

4. Amusement Parks

Let everyone be a kid again at an outdoor Amusement Park or Water Park. You’ll have a blast at Earl Haig Family Fun Park in Brantford with its waterslide, lazy river, kids’ splash pad, pool, mini golf & batting cages or check out Canada’s largest outdoor wave pool & waterslides for a true adrenaline rush at Wild Waterworks in Hamilton. Hamilton is also lucky to have Adventure Village with waterfalls, fishponds, rapids, shipwrecks, mini golf, batting cages, bungee trampoline, gemstone mining and many other fun activities. A great time for all ages!

5. Go fishing

Try your luck on a fishing charter! No experience necessary. Guaranteed fun & adventure. Andrews Charters in Burlington will take you out or find your own fishing spot at one of the beautiful conservation parks. Introduce your family to fishing at one of the 2 free Family Fishing Weekends every year (no license necessary).

6. Swim, Bike, Hike & Explore the Outdoors at a Conservation Area

You can spend hours, days or even weeks at one of the many stunning conservation areas in Hamilton, Halton, Brant and still need more time to explore everything. Sandy beaches, Mountain Biking trails, scenic hiking trails, fishing, waterfalls, animals, heritage sites, educational programs, special events, camping and so much more!

7. Try your hand at Canoeing, Kayaking or Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Explore the impressive Grand River on a canoe, kayak or raft. Try stand-up paddleboarding, fishing or hike the scenic trails. In true Canadian fashion, paddle your way through magnificent waterways on a guided tour or rent your own boat. Either way, you are in for an extraordinary experience. The Grand River accommodates all levels from beginner to advanced. Trips, lessons and rentals available at Grand River Rafting or Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Co.

8. Markets & Farms

There’s nothing better than strolling aisles full of fresh Ontario produce, sampling artisanal jams, cheeses & baked goods or savoring the smell of fresh flowers. Luckily, some of Ontario’s best markets can be found in Hamilton Halton, and Brant ). The Hamilton Farmers’ Market is one of oldest and features cooking demos as well as ethnic specialty food. Other great options include the fabulous Brampton Farmers’ Market and markets in Ancaster, Aldershot, Milton, Burlington and Brantford. The region also boasts many pick-your-own and family fun farms, one of which is Orchard Home Farm with its incredible array of fresh apples for picking & baked goods. What a great way to spend a crisp fall day!

9. Cruising along the River

A great way to see Southern Ontario’s largest river is from the vantage point of a comfy chair on the deck of a riverboat! Book a delicious & relaxing lunch, dinner, sunset or private cruise and watch the scenic riverside greenery and houses float by while you eat and drink. Nature and food combine for a memorable time. 10. The Niagara Escarpment :

The Niagara Escarpment is an astounding 450 million years old and stretches  over 750 kms from Niagara to Tobermory. It is truly a natural treasure, home to hundreds of bird species as well as mammals, reptiles, fish and wild orchids. It is a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and has spectacular waterfalls and stunning scenic lookouts, and offers a unique backdrop for adventurers of all abilities. So grab your hiking shoes or mountain bike or simply meander through the area and enjoy all it has to offer – year-round.

HHBRTA Launches 2022 Regional Tourism Award Recognition Program

The Hamilton Halton Brant Regional Tourism Association’s (HHBRTA) priority is to support regional tourism business and operators and they want to recognize the spirit and contributions these businesses make to the Ontario and Canadian Economy. Pre-pandemic, Ontario’s heritage, sport, tourism and culture sectors generated $75 billion dollars in economic activity and hundreds of thousands of jobs.

The HHBRTA introduced the Regional Tourism Awards Program in 2021 after many businesses adapted to the tourism climate as a result of the pandemic, finding new ways to do business and continue bringing unique experiences to individuals. Now in its second year, HHBRTA is continuing this industry program to highlight the note-worthy achievements of tourism businesses in the region. This program also recognizes partners who are collaborating with the HHBRTA to grow regional tourism.

The Award Categories include:

• Innovative New Experience or Product Development Award – recognizing a tourism business/organization within the Hamilton Halton Brant Region that enhanced their business during pandemic times by developing a new or enhanced tourism product or visitor experience to appeal to the local tourism audience in pandemic times.
• Partnership and Collaboration Award – recognizing a partnered initiative (tourism experience, product, marketing campaign) that successfully attracts and encourages locals/visitors to experience the Hamilton Halton Brant Region. Partnerships can include collaborations with private and/or public sector entities.
• Responsible Tourism Award – recognizing demonstrated innovation from tourism industry partners/organizations who are leading the way to proactively consider environmental impacts to encourage sustainable tourism .

Nominations should be focused on initiatives or activities that occurred from January to December 2021. The deadline for submissions is January 28, 2022. Kelly Harris is the Industry & Community Liaison at OTEC (Ontario Tourism Education Corporation). Her past experience includes positions as Marketing Manager at a DMO and at a local craft brewery. Kelly is a great communicator and relationship builder and enjoys working with Tourism partners to develop partnerships. Kelly graduated from the University of Guelph with an Honours degree in Criminology and then went on to work in the insurance industry for 12 years. Kelly was the President of the Toronto Insurance Women’s Association and sat on the Board of Directors for that association for 5 years.Kelly enjoys spending time with her family and friends and reading in her ‘downtime’. Kelly is involved in the community and has sat on school council committees and can often be found at a curling club or hockey rink cheering her kids on.

As Head of Education and Programs at the Royal Ontario Museum, Julian Kingston oversaw public programming, school programs, hands-on and digital galleries, and outreach. As Program Manager, Arts, Media and Culture he directed the development and delivery of courses in transmedia, web development, game design and digital storytelling for Sheridan College. Now at the Region of Waterloo Museum, he is exploring as many ways as possible to tell the stories of Waterloo's places, people and communities.

Tracey is a seasoned Travel and Tourism professional with almost 30 years of distinctive experiences in multiple disciplines. In her current Senior Management role at VIA Rail, she is a channel leader for Corporate, Tour Operator and Travel Agencies as well as a certified change agent in strategic areas within the organization.

Tracey is currently a member of the Canadian Professional Sales Association, SKAL International Toronto and past President of SKAL International Hamilton. She is a Board Trustee for the MLH Youth Fund, which grants student scholarships to underprivileged kids in order to participate in educational school trips. Tracey is active in her community and has both past and present involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton, Oakville Chamber of Commerce and the Travel Industry Association of Ontario.

Marilyn Butkovic is supporting award winning hotels and venues in Ontario as the Regional Sales Manager for Vrancor Hospitality.  With over 25 years of experience in the hotel industry she brings to the board her knowledge of Sales & Revenue Management, Business Development and Leadership Skills.  Marilyn is a former Past President of the Stoney Creek Chamber of Commerce and the Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce and enjoys spending time outdoors with her family.

Rebecca Edgar is the executive director of Visit Oakville, where she leads a small but mighty team in building partnerships, supporting product development and marketing Oakville as a unique destination in the Heart of Ontario. Rebecca has over 20 years of management experience, with an emphasis on public relations, sales and marketing. She has a B.A. in political science from Laurier, a post-graduate certificate in public relations from Humber and a Master's degree in communication management from McMaster. Rebecca is an avid reader, sports fan and Cheer Mom.

Trish Gerth is the General Manager at the Africian Lion Safari, with a demonstrated history of working in the leisure, travel & tourism industry. Trish brings her skills of Operations Management, Customer Service, Marketing Strategy, Hospitality Industry, and Tourism Management to the Board. Trish graduated with an Honours Business Administration focused in Human Resources Management from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Jaquie started off her career in Tourism as a summer student at Chiefswood National Historic Site in 2011. Since then she has worked with historic and cultural sites throughout Six Nations of the Grand River. Jaquie graduated from Wilfred Laurier University in 2015 with an Organizational Leadership degree with Honours. She has been working with Six Nations Tourism full time since 2015 and has recently moved into the Tourism Manager position.Throughout her career Jaquie has found a passion for tourism and culture. She has gained knowledge in Indigenous Tourism that is specific to the people of Six Nations. Growing Indigenous tourism in her region and sharing the knowledge with visitors is a strength and goal that she continues to strive towards.

Lisa La Rocca is currently Director of Operations at local independent record label Sonic Unyon Records, which includes working with local musicians, as well as producing Hamilton’s Supercrawl festival, and many other live music and cultural events year-round. Lisa serves as a board member of the Downtown Hamilton BIA, a member of the Hamilton Arts Advisory Commission, and a member of Hamilton’s Music Advisory Team. She is also a part-time PhD student in the Communication and Culture program at York University and holds an M.A. in Communication and New Media from McMaster University.

Tourism and events have been part of Dave’s career whether a professional or volunteer role for most of his life. Most recently he was Executive Director for the Sound of Music Festival for 13 years. Dave moved into events full time after 20 years of Logistics and Operations management in the manufacturing industry. He is proud of current and past director roles on the Halton Hamilton Brant Regional Tourism Association, Festival and Events Ontario and Tourism Burlington Boards as well as enjoying his passion for music, renovations, sports and the environment.

Sara Munroe is the Director of Economic Development and Tourism for the City of Brantford. She brings nearly 20 years of experience working in tourism and community economic development, with a strong cultural lens, to the HHBRTA board. Sara is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Master of Museum Studies program and earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph. She also holds an Executive Diploma in Municipal Management and is pursing her Ec.D. certification through the University of Waterloo. Sara is an active volunteer who loves to spend her spare time in the kitchen, checking out new local restaurants and festivals, and collecting art.

Angela Paparizo is the Manager of Arts and Culture with the City of Burlington. She brings to the board over 15 years of experience in Public Administrations and 4 years of experience in the Private Sector. Angela has a Masters Degree in History, Bachelor Degree in Journalism, Certificate in Cultural Planning and a Completion of Executive Municipal Leadership Program. Angela works closely with Tourism Burlington, Burlington Art Gallery, Performing Arts Centre, Museums of Burlington and Libraries in developing art and culture for the City.

Garth Pottruff’s passion is introducing people to the outdoors.  He comes from a background of farming, forestry, with years of experience in outdoor & indigenous tourism. He and his son founded the Grand River Rafting Company near Paris Ontario, which hosts over 50,000 visitors yearly. Garth is a firm believer in using his success to help others startup outdoor businesses. Getting big was never the goal… but doing it right was.

Damian Szybalski is the Manager of Economic Development, Innovation and Culture at the Town of Halton Hills. Damian provides strategic direction for this division to attract investment and grow the local economy by leveraging Halton Hills’ high quality of life, strategic location, cultural vibrancy and tourism assets. He is focused on integrating and maximizing synergies between economic development, tourism and culture. Mr. Szybalski has extensive strategic management, economic development and planning experience. He holds a Master of Science in Planning degree from the University of Toronto, as well as a Certificate in Economic Development from Waterloo University. Damian is a member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO), and the Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC).
