1996 Trek Y33

That’s what our friend Chris Lyons thought when he saw this Trek Y-33 at Frank’s Fix-it shop in Aberdeen. Clearly a labor of love for all things awesome in the 1990’s, this bike has been upgraded to perfection.

Let’s start at the beginning. This is a Trek Y-33 built in 1996. It is arguably the coolest thing that Trek, a midwestern company with a reputation for generating some fairly dull bikes, has ever made. When Trek introduced the Y bike it created an immediate buzz. Every bike magazine at the newsstand featured a review. In bike shops around the country there was a lot of gawking and countless test rides.

Trek’s earlier suspension designs (the 9000 series) were terrible. They were heavy bikes that bobbed up and down as you pedaled and bikes that reacted fairly unpredictably to bumps in the trail. The Y bike was a step forward for Trek, and it addressed a lot of those issues. The Y-33 utilized Trek’s OCLV carbon fiber in a radical looking and light weight main frame that was coupled to an aluminum unified rear triangle. No pedal-induced bobbing, predictable behavior and a pretty light bike.

Stable Tec Dampenator

Unified rear triangle

SDG saddle, Ringle post

The components here represent great ingenuity and some really fun style. The stock fork has been replaced by the long travel Rock Shox “Judy DH” downhill model. We’re not sure if the additional 15mm of fork travel was the goal or if it was the red fork legs…

The Spin thermoplastic wheels look just right with this Y bike, don’t they? Tough, reasonably light, and cool looking. The three requirements for most of the parts here.

The brakes are awesome. They’re Magura Race Line HS33 hydraulic rim brakes, and they’re the most powerful mountain bike brakes you can find. Don’t believe it? Consider this: with current hydraulic disc brakes stopping power generally increases with rotor size (180mm rotor brakes stop better than those using 160mm) this bike has 570mm diameter brake rotors! Plus they’re neon yellow.

Magura hydraulic brakes

Spin Thermoplastic wheels

Paul Components derailleurs

What else? Let’s see… There’s a SDG saddle with a Kevlar cover (no rips in your saddle if you crash your bike). Red Control Tech handlebars to match the Ringle seat post and handlebar stem. White Industries made the polished aluminum crankset. Paul Components of Chico, California made the derailleurs and helped create the small window of time when it was possible to assemble a bike that was 98% American made.

Oh, the Dampenator! That’s a rare thing. The StableTec Dampenator (that donut around the headset) was an attempt to calm down the steering on mountain bikes in the ‘90’s. Currently (and in the early days of mountain biking) frames were made with slack head tube angles to help you steer and stay upright at high speeds or while riding on rough trails. In the ‘90’s you were on your own, wrestling with twitchy bike frames that had steep front ends, narrow handlebars and a forward riding position. Steering dampers would have really helped (if you could get over the added weight and the funny appearance).

…Flying “Y” guitar?

Carbon fiber bike frame or…

Oh, so what about all of those bike magazine reviews and rider testimonials? Verdicts on the Y-33 varied wildly. If you had fairly smooth, open terrain and/or you stayed in the saddle most of the ride, you were a fan. If you had tricky trails or stood on the pedals a lot, you were left wanting more…

Trek Y33

TREK Y33 OCLV (1996) – SOLD

During 1995 Trek released a bike design that would revolutionise the design of mountain bikes for several years. It was called the Y33 and was made from what Trek called OCLV , or Optimum Compaction Low Void. In plain English, that’s Carbon Fibre. This would have been one of the most expensive top of the range mountain bikes then available . The revolutionary thing was the Y frame with a URT (Unified Rear Triangle) which was really the ultimate in simplicity for a full suspension design . It also won an industrial design award .

It hasn’t long before everyone else was copying it, though usually with only a two piece “Y” or variants thereof and differing pivot points for the URT. There was some mention of Trek attempting to seek compensation from GT for infringing their patent. So, next time you see a Y frame bike, remember it came from Trek’s Y33 .

Happy to offer this MTB legend from mid 1990s in an amazing condition. 8 speed Shimano XTR M950 , Rock shox Judy SL and Spinergy Rev X Rocks are the words nothing to add. For true MTB enthusiasts and collectors .

I bought a used one off Craigslist its incredible The pedals are metal, infact the metal all around feels so high quality its like super heavy duty. I like how its portable - i can stack it on its seat and back wheel in my apt extremely convenient. The suspension is so smooth for rough city streets and transferring to sidewalk is amazing. The shimano all metal breaks are incredible and the clicker shifters shift smooth. I also like how the frame is skinny looking down. No complaints at all.

If any weakness, the paint chips off, but the person i bought it from wrapped with blue electric tape so it actually looks cool (imgur picture of the bike i bought for 120 bucks): https://imgur.com/a/2hLWEHc

Had mine 20+ years. Built like a tank. Full suspension and very comfy, no mods or repairs at all except I fitted Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres to cut down on punctures and get a quieter road ride and fitted a slightly softer saddle and an extension stem to sit a bit more upright . This isn't the mud lovers Valhalla but if you want a sturdy reliable all rounder look no further.

A bit heavy by modern standards but then, so am I.

this bike has not let me down

i have changed the forks

i want rid of my trusty y3 but dont no were to sell it any one got any ideas

Frame strength and design. I have pounded the hell out of this thing and I couldn't break it.

Stock fork, shock, cassett, and brakes. It would be better to just buy the frame.

I got this bike because a friend of mine wanted one of my boards but he didn't have any cash so I took the Y3 in trade. When I first got it I hated the thing. I am 6'2" and weigh 210. The suspension couldn't handle it. I did everything I could to trash it but the FN thing wouldn't break. I took it to a skate park and rode it on the half-pipe (not recommended), I rode it (more like tumbled with it) down Diamond Head, and all that broke was my helmet (compliments of the half-pipe). After a few months I decided to put some money into it and see if it had any real potential. I reequipped it with Hayes disks, Fox rear shock, Manitou fork, Shimano XTR cassette, and a bunch of other goodies. I must say, you put about $4,000 into the Y3 and you will have a damn good MB/DHB.

good frame,

This is agreat bike if you are willing to put money into improving some of the components. the only real problems i had were falty tubes and the pedals but they were replaced instantly the rock shox pyslo is Nuts i go of 5-8 footdrops and they just don't bottom out. The one time the did i nose dived of a ten foot gap i had built. Buy this bike if you don't care about wieght the xc people who had test this bike had to be nuts it is definentily not lite and the bobbing makes it very non xc able

The frame is the best strength of the bike

front and rear shock, all components

I had this bike for 9 years and changed everything on the bike. I have a new cannondale but I prefer to ride my y3. I get compliments all the time on this bike I guess becuase it looks like an Italian bike because the frame is red, tires are green, seat is white. This bike kicks ass

worst fork on the face of the earth....

For the price, it's an incredible bike except for the front fork. It is terrible. When you buy this bike, expect to add on $150-300 to the price for a decent front fork. Other than that, its good. The frame is wicked strong and can handle a lot. So it starts with 5 chilis but -1 for the fork.

Good price for an entry-level FS

stock components

Bought it used for a decent price last year, but cashed in on the upgrades. I ordered about another $400 in parts from a very popular mail order place (not to be named here). To make a long story short, they screwed up the order (like they so reliably do) but this time in my favor. I got the whole shipment/upgrade for free. I've been riding the bike for two seasons now and its been awesome. I tossed the stock parts immediately. With the changes, I've had no complaints yet except for the XT cassette that is as durable as a turd. Next year I want to upgrade the shocks... maybe I can cut another deal. :) I'm sure there are better, more energy efficient fs frames out there. But I find as long as I keep my butt on the seat, there really is no bobbing or energy loss. I recommend the bike to those who are looking to get into the fs scene. It's not worth the msrp, but used it can be a good deal.

I-drive tested

Weight strength and true Y frame ... not to mention price

Great bike... Got mine on closeout sale ... 725 with spins... so i can't complain ... I was disappoiunted in the parts ... Not that great... but for the money i paid... it was cheap ... I would recomend to anyone who wants a bike to upgrade that wants to look cool at the same time... and for all you posers who only ride on the road... get a freaking road bike ... you pretty little buggers ... and for those who want to look good and have a bike that can take a beating too ... get this one.but be prepared to upgrade front shock and drivetrain ... have fun... and for those looking for hardtails... i would reccomend a c'dale F400 ... best bet

I bought a Y33 for $20.00 at a yard sale. Everything is fine and the bike rides. However, the rear shock needs replaced. Is it worth it to replace it? If not, can you explain why not to. I'm looking to start riding trails and this was a really nice light frame.

get new or used shock on Ebay get like a fox float 6.5 center to center. that is a great bike to start with I had y-22.

what make is the shock if it is cane creek ad 10 or 12 it is easy to rebuild!

Customer Reviews

Very happy with my new M7 and wife's Moscow Plus

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Great support and assistance from the team at Leon to make the right purchase decision. Hope other people may enjoy the ride and quality product. Harry G

NCM e-Bikes Review: Are These Bikes Any Good?

Last Updated on November 17, 2023 by Igor Karni

Easy E-Biking - NCM electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

German-based e-bikes company, NCM, is connected to other brands such as Australia-based, Leon Cycle, and Leisger. NCM represents the pedelec arm of the said conglomeration. Established in 2014, its main headquarters are located in Hanover, where it still does most of the designing. It does the manufacturing in France, Vietnam, and China.

Table of Contents

The brand doesn’t explicitly state what its name or abbreviation stands for. Since its history is intimately tied to its parent brand, Leon Cycle, you don’t need to look further than the latter’s history to know more about NCM. It started out mainly as an online retail shop specializing in e-bikes and after less than a decade, it has already expanded to Spain, Australia, the UK, and the USA.

NCM e-Bikes Review: Model Lines

Ncm: veritable deliverers of quality, reliability, and durability at affordable prices.

The brand proclaims that it delivers all three of the said factors and, more or less, it manages to do so considering some of the gems in its catalog. NCM has a fairly balanced and varied collection of e-bikes.

It has different offerings for eMTB, commuter, folding, fat, and cruiser lovers alike. Their relatively budget-friendly e-bikes lean more toward the sporty side, as evidenced by the general geometry and components of the models, without sacrificing style.

NCM Aspen Fat Model Line

The Aspen Plus provides excellent value for money through its sheer sturdiness, high-quality components, and riding experience that don’t leave feeling like you got the shorter end of the stick. Sure, the Das-Kit rear 250W motor may not compare to more premium-priced mid-drives out there, but it’s sufficiently powerful because it can tackle any kind of terrain and performs particularly well on snowy trails.

Easy E-Biking - NCM Aspen electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

It’s heavy but sturdy, making it great for beginners. Despite this, it can top at more than 20mph (32 km/h). The full-throttle adds obvious convenience, however, we don’t recommend relying solely on the motor when negotiating steeper than normal inclines.

We also like that you can push this e-bike up to 50 miles (80 km) with a single charge. It uses a brand-standard Das-Kit LCD display that only gives you the bare necessities as far as most e-bikes displays go.

Read also: Why fat tires are good news for electric bikes ? And, How to select the best hybrid e-bike ?

The Aspen Plus is certainly better than its standard counterparts as far as components are concerned. You get sufficiently wide, 26” fat tires, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes as well as optional headlights and taillights.

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM Aspen Fat model line  here .

NCM Moscow eMTB Model Line

The NCM Moscow, particularly its Plus version, received rave reviews on its release and arguably remains one of the fledgling brand’s milestones. It uses a smaller than normal Das-Kit geared rear hub motor with 250W of output and as much as 55 Nm of torque. Great figures, considering the affordable price range.

Easy E-Biking - NCM Moscow electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

If we add in the 48V lithium battery that can last up to 75 miles (120 km) with wise usage of the pedal assist, you pretty much get a steal of an eMTB. It uses hard-gripping Schwalbe tires that can handle most kinds of terrain, which only ups its versatility.

We also love the ergonomic handlebars and the relative comfort of the gel seats. We recommend the Plus version simply because it guarantees your safety better with the Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. They’re “smart” brakes that integrate an interrupter safety feature that lets you shut off the motor should the need arise.

Read also: How to select your first electric mountain bike ? And, How much does a good eMTB e-bike cost ?

On the whole, it’s an e-bike that’s up there when we’re talking about outstanding value for money as far as e-bikes are concerned.

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM Moscow eMTB model line  here .

NCM Prague eMTB Model Line

Fat-tired and cheaper than most, NCM’s Prague line is another proof that the brand knows how to design budget-friendly offerings without compromising on quality. Specs-wise, it’s slightly less beefed up than the Moscow, but it’s still above-average overall.

Easy E-Biking - NCM Prague electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

The 36V battery can give you up to 40 to 60 miles max (65 to 95 km), and the Bafang rear hub motor it uses has stood out in the e-bike industry as one of the most durable that’s available in the market. If you want an eMTB that’s sturdier, safer, and more capable of handling rougher terrains, this is a good candidate because of the Schwalbe 26” fat tires.

Read also: How much elevation / altitude can electric bikes climb ? And, Can electric bikes go up steep hills ?

It doesn’t have a Plus version, as of this writing. Still, the Tektro mechanical disc brakes are commendable enough for their stopping power. Nothing beats hydraulic, though. The Prague is definitely still a steal by virtue of the perks outlined here and its low price.

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM Prague eMTB model line  here .

NCM Milano Hybrid Model Line

A commuter hybrid, the Milano is certainly one of the most versatile models in the NCM catalog. The step-thru frame definitely helps make that more viable. If we add in the soft cushion of the saddle and the upright seating position, it may even fit the cruiser category with ease!

Easy E-Biking - NCM Milano electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

The Plus is adequately powerful, though, as evidenced by the same 48V battery and Das-Kit rear hub motor that it uses. Expect the specs to be mostly similar with a few deviations. Riders enjoy impressive riding ranges that can go up to 93 miles (150 km) in a single full charge.

The motor makes easy work of even the steeper climbs out there – all the more so if it’s ridden on paved roads. This model is more complete when it comes to components, though.

Read also:  How to select the best commuter e-bike (with examples)? – also in this article . And, how much does a commuter e-bike cost ?

Both the standard and Plus include a fairly lengthy rear rack, headlights, kickstand, and fenders. The Plus, with its addition of hydraulic disc brakes, leaves no room for want, so we think it’s still better than the MAX. Although, the MAX does incorporate a mid-drive Bafang motor, which makes it lighter.

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM Milano Hybrid model line  here .

NCM Munich Hybrid Model Line

The Munich is NCM’s entry-level commuter that imparts the same comfort as the Milano line. The NC8 version has larger 28” Schwalbe marathon tires that are ideal for longer rides. It also uses a unique combination of Promax-V and Shimano coaster brakes, which obviously requires the user to know their individual mechanisms.

Easy E-Biking - NCM Munich electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

If you’re not already aware of it, coaster brakes brake when you pedal backward, making it appeal to a specific type of rider. If you don’t prefer that, you can always go for the standard, which uses Tektro disc brakes.

The range tops to about 43 miles (73 km) for both. The models are comparatively light compared to other commuter options out there, which is a wonder since it uses the same Das-Kit rear hub motor found in most NCM models.

Read also: How to select the best cruiser e-bike ? And, How much does a good cruiser e-bike cost ?

Expect to get the same slew of accessories as the Milano once you choose any Munich model. The same can be said for the overall riding experience, although the Munich can only manage half the range that the Milano can achieve.

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM Munich Hybrid model line  here .

NCM Venice Hybrid Model Line

The Venice may seem like just a step-over version of the Milano, but that’s not really the case for its Plus version. You get to enjoy the exclusivity offered by the Venice once you choose its Plus version because of the patently superior components it has.

Easy E-Biking - NCM Venice electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

We like the far better hydraulic brakes it uses, which also happen to have brake sensors. The Venice Plus also has a faster charger. Another unique feature is the Prowheel crank it uses, which has received generally positive reviews in bike circles.

Read also: How to select the best city e-bike (with examples)? – also in this article , and this article . And, How much does a good city e-bike cost ?

Other than these features, expect the Venice to share the same specs as the Milano.

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM Venice Hybrid model line  here .

NCM Paris Folding Model Line

Same as other NCM models, you don’t want to settle for anything other than the Plus version of this folding e-bike. We like the overall smart design of this folding e-bike. For one, we like how you can easily take out the battery by adjusting the saddles and just turning the key and pulling it out for charging. It’s just as easy to slide in.

Easy E-Biking - NCM Paris electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

We prefer the gel saddles of the Plus version for maximum comfort, and it complements the fact that it’s a suspension seat post. There’s also front suspension, which works just as decently. Of course, the Plus also uses infinitely better hydraulic disc brakes and a faster charger.

The e-bike contains almost every accessory found in NCM’s hybrid commuters, so that’s a big plus because you practically get a folding version of those models with either the Paris or the London.

Read also: How to select the best folding e-bike (with examples)? And, How much does a good foldable e-bike cost ?

The fact that it’s step-thru is somewhat great, but most folding e-bikes have low enough frames as they are. Lastly, it takes up close to half of the space it usually occupies once fully folded.

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM Paris Folding model line  here .

NCM London Folding Model Line

There’s a very thin line that divides the London folding line from its Paris counterpart. Technically, the London is just a step-over variation of the Paris, with a slight very negligible difference in the shift lever used. We have the same feedback as the Paris with regards to its performance and components.

Easy E-Biking - NCM London electric bicycle - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

We invite you to take a closer look at the  NCM London Folding model line  here .

Does NCM Offer a Manufacturer’s Warranty?

NCM e-bike buyers enjoy a one-year warranty for all the electrical parts of any model.

What Do Most Riders Like About NCM?

It’s obvious that the brand appeals to casual riders who don’t want to have to spend an arm and a leg just to get to ride a high-quality e-bike. We need to emphasize the quality part since the other aspect that evidently makes NCM stand out is it doesn’t skimp on imparting value to riders. That it underwent vigorous growth since its founding only proves this point further.

What Countries Does NCM Ship To?

Besides the countries, we mentioned above, anywhere where there’s a Leon Cycles dealer or if Amazon USA allows shipping to your particular country.
