hl cruises wiki

Julian Pfitzner has been named CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, effective from Jan 1.

The TUI-owned brand said that following the integration of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises under the TUI Cruises umbrella, Karl J. Pojer, current CEO, will step down.

For Pfitzner, it’s a job promotion, having previously been responsible as the product manager for Europa 2 and for marketing for the German brand.

Sebastian Ebel, member of the Executive Board of TUI AG, said: “We would like to thank Karl Pojer for his many years of outstanding service to the Group and above all for his special achievements for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. The entire Executive Board of the TUI Group wishes him all the best and continued success for his future. The maxim of perfection for the best cruise liners worldwide is a manifesto and are destined to endure in the company”.

Pojer noted: “It was an important step to integrate the successful and powerful Hapag-Lloyd Cruises brand into the joint venture between the TUI Group and Royal Caribbean. I have actively and intensively accompanied and shaped this route. Now it is the right time to hand over the tasks and the further path to the new management. I would like to thank all my colleagues who have supported me so enthusiastically on this track over the past seven years – for me the best crew in the world. I wish Julian Pfitzner, who perfectly represents the philosophy of the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises brand, continued success in his new management role.”]

In May 2013, Pojer took over as Chairman of the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten. With a far-reaching restructuring, consistent brand management and a realignment of the ships, he achieved a remarkable turnaround of the company, according to a press release. In 2019, he put Hapag-Lloyd Cruises on course for growth with two new ships in the expedition segment and achieved the best result in the company’s history. A third new luxury expedition ship joins the fleet in 2021.

HANSEATIC nature: first ship sets sail in the new Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ expedition class

  • TUI Group continues its growth strategy in the cruise segment with the three newbuilds
  • Maiden voyage from Hamburg to Bergen, calling at the Hebrides, Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands
  • Structural highlights: highest ice class for passenger ships, two extendible glass balconies
  • Expedition fleet will use marine gas oil on all routes from July 2020
  • Innovative learning in the HanseAtrium and Ocean Academy
  • “Inspired by nature” design concept

Today, in Hamburg, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises presented the HANSEATIC nature for the first time. This is the first of three, structurally- identical ships in the cruise line’s new expedition class. The ship will leave Hamburg on 5 May 2019 for its inaugural cruise, which will take it to the Hebrides, Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands, finishing in Bergen. This summer, the ship will visit the Arctic. The HANSEATIC nature is a small, manoeuvrable and state-of-the-art expedition ship, to be positioned in the 5-star segment. Its construction, design and routes revolve around providing a true expedition experience and getting as close as possible to nature. It also offers the highest standards of comfort and service. The second, international ship – the HANSEATIC inspiration – will be commissioned in October 2019, followed by the HANSEATIC spirit in May 2021. The new expedition class is being financed by an investment from the parent TUI Group; therefore, all ships in the fleet are the property of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and the TUI Group.

The new ship can accommodate up to 230 guests, or 199 on Antarctic cruises and circumnavigations of Spitsbergen. The ship raises the bar in the expedition cruise segment and features many special structural elements that enhance further the expedition experience. The PC6 ice class, two extendible balconies, the Nature Walk deck tour at the ship’s bow, 17 on-board Zodiacs and E-Zodiacs with eco-friendly electric drive systems and a marina and on-board kayaks all enable passengers to enjoy intensive experiences of nature.

The HANSEATIC nature also features cutting-edge equipment and environmental technology. All three, new ships are fitted with an SCR catalytic converter, which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by almost 95 %. The ships also have PROMAS rudders with special propellers and a special hull design to reduce fuel consumption and, therefore, lower emissions. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has implemented a range of environmental protection measures, some of which go beyond the legal requirements. For example, the company does not use heavy oil in areas that require particular protection and uses low-pollutant marine gas oil on around 70 % of its expedition cruises. From July 2020, marine gas oil will be used on all routes for the entire expedition fleet. All new ships are equipped for cold ironing.

Between cruises to the Arctic in the European summer and expeditions to the Antarctic in the European winter, the HANSEATIC nature will also offer warmer water cruises to destinations such as the Amazon, the South Seas, Chile’s fjords, the Azores and Cape Verde. This allows passengers to visit remote, faraway places and embark on expeditions on the doorsteps of Europe.

Guests can discover fascinating information about the nature and environment of global expedition destinations not only on land but also on-board in innovative centres of knowledge. Experts will give daily presentations in the HanseAtrium, a separable multifunctional lounge with state-of-the-art technology and large LED screens on the walls and below the ceiling. On Deck 8, the heart of the Ocean Academy is the study wall, a 6 × 1.8 m (19 × 5.9 ft) touchscreen wall. Here guests can conduct individual studies and research to deepen their knowledge of the natural wonders they encounter on shore excursions and Zodiac rides. The content – provided by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, as well as scientists, experts and journalists – is displayed, for example, in the form of articles, videos and biographies. The Ocean Academy also has four Study Seats, digital study posters and a microscope area.

“Inspired by nature”, the philosophy of the new expedition ships, has been brought to life by the OCEANARCHITECTS architectural office to reflect their expeditionary spirit. Nature is not only experienced outside but also is reflected in the ship’s interior design.

The 120 cabins and suites on the HANSEATIC nature range from Panoramic Cabins at 21 m 2  (226 ft 2 ) to Grand Suites at 71 m 2  (764 ft 2 ). There are exclusively outside cabins, almost all of which have their own balcony, or French balcony.

The Hamptons speciality restaurant has 44 seats and promises culinary diversity, serving North American specialities with the easy-going maritime flair of the East Coast. The expedition ship has two more restaurants: the HANSEATIC Restaurant (main restaurant) with 178 seats and the Lido Restaurant with 184 seats (indoor and outdoor), a barbecue and a show kitchen. Flexible mealtimes and free choice of seating in the restaurants ensure that guests can fit their meals around their expedition experiences, not the other way round.

The HANSEATIC nature has spacious wellness and fitness areas and a large pool area with a counter-current system.

Its sister ship, the HANSEATIC inspiration, will set sail this October. This will be the second new expedition ship from Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and all cruises will be conducted in both German and English.

MS Seaventure Review

Review of ms seaventure.

The 1990-built MS Seaventure cruise ship ("MS Bremen" for Hapag-Lloyd between 1993-2020) was built as "Frontier Spirit" at Mitsubishi Shipyard (in Kobe Japan ). In 2003, MS Bremen discovered a previously uncharted island in Antarctica, which was later named "Bremen Island". The Bremen cruise ship was successfully featured in the TV show "Killer Wave" (2007-launched). In 2006, the liner did a Northwest Passage cruise using real-time satellite data about sea ice locations.

Since April 2021, the vessel (renamed to "MS Seaventure"/previously "MS Seascape") is operated under charter by VIVA Cruises (2019-established brand of Scylla AG) and also seasonally chartered to Polar Latitudes Inc (Vermont USA-based travel agency/tour operator) and Iceland ProCruises (Reykjavik-based travel company).

Seaventure is chartered by Polar Latitudes in the winter months, during which period the ship's max capacity is reduced to 139 passengers and 90 crew/staff. Polar Latitudes also seasonally charters the Noble Caledonia-owned vessels Hebridean Sky and Island Sky . Iceland ProCruises charters Seaventure during summer-fall.

For Hapag-Lloyd, the vessel (IMO number 8907424) was Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308429000) and registered in Nassau . Scylla reflagged the boat to Cyprus (MMSI 210081000) and changed the registry to Limassol .

History - construction and ownership

On January 15, 2019, was announced that Hapag-Lloyd sold it to Scylla . Initially, the vessel was planned for delivery to the new shipowner Scylla AG (family-owned Swiss company) in May 2021. Bremen ship's sale price was not disclosed. In 2019, Scylla AG owned 31 riverboats, most of which are chartered to various European cruisetour companies.

In mid-July 2020, Hapag-Lloyd announced that MS Bremen will not sail for Hapag-Lloyd ever again. When the announcement was made, the 30-year-old Bremen was docked in Port Warnemunde-Rostock Germany . It had scheduled voyages for HL to Antarctica for winter season 2020-2021. MS Seaventure was officially acquired by Scylla AG (shipowner/VIVA Cruises' parent company) from Hapag-Lloyd on November 1, 2020.

MS Seaventure was last drydock-refurbished in 2021 and is currently managed by the Cyprus company RsR Nemo Ship Management Ltd.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises (Kreuzfahrten) is a Hamburg -based company, subsidiary of Hapag-Lloyd AG (shipowner) - currently ranked world's 5th-largest container shipping line in terms of fleet capacity.

Until 2017, HL Cruises was a fully-owned subsidiary of Europe's leading travel group TUI AG.

MS Seaventure cruise ship (MS Bremen)

The 164-passenger ship Bremen (as SeaQuest) was acquired by Hapag-Lloyd in April 1993. The Japan-built vessel was purchased in 1992 from Salen Lindblad Cruising and renamed "Frontier Spirit", starting operations for Frontier Cruises under the newly-established brand "SeaQuest Cruises". Frontier Spirit became the world's 4th passenger ship to successfully transit the Canadian Arctic via the Northwest Passage route .

Decks and Cabins

MS Seaventure staterooms (a total of 82 / for max 164 passengers / double occupancy) are all Outside and mainly Oceanview (plus 16x Balcony and 2 Suites) in 7 grades. Staterooms' standard amenities include smart HDTV, DVD player, individual air conditioning, minibar, electronic safe box (in the closet), en-suite bathroom, premium bedding, plush bathrobes. Handicapped (wheelchair-accessible) cabins are also available. All suites are with step-out balconies and larger lounge areas.

The boat has 8 decks , of which 6 are passenger-accessible and 5 with cabins.

Enjoy exciting expert-guided shore excursions during the day. Nordic walking sticks, bicycles, kayaks and snorkeling gear are at hand for excursions. Lectures are hosted daily onboard ms Bremen in the Panorama Lounge. The ship additionally has Bremen Club, two bars and Beauty parlour. A mini boutique carries gifts, and an Internet center boasts microscopes and PC workstations. The fitness center has cardio equipment and offers great ocean views. The Sun deck, swimming pool, and sauna are perfect to relax after a day of exploring.

The ship has its own fleet of 14x Zodiacs (Zodiac Milpro boats) - rigid-hulled motorized high-speed boats used for shoreside cruising and landings in shallow coastal areas.

Bremen is Hapag Lloyd's smallest cruise ship, but also fleet's toughest vessel. It has the highest ice-class (E4) awarded to a passenger ship and is well-equipped to maneuver along Arctic and Antarctic glaciers. The liner has a fleet of 12 zodiacs (high-speed motorized boats) used for landings and coastal exploration. These boats are launched at all hours (day and night) during polar voyages.

In March 2001, MS Bremen suffered propulsion/power loss during a storm in Southern Atlantic Ocean. Unable to continue with its own power, the vessel was drifting for ~2 hours. Carrying a total of 137 passengers (German tourists), there was a great danger for collision and sinking. Crew members knew that even with the lifeboats, the passengers would not have survived in the harsh freezing conditions. Luckily, the crew managed to restart the engines and the ship escaped the disaster.

Fun fact is, that in 2003, a previously uncharted island was discovered in Antarctica by MS Bremen and in 204 named "Bremen Island". In 2006, helped by satellite images of sea ice, the cruise ship sailed on the Northwest Passage (Canadian Arctic) route connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. Hapag Lloyd's Bremen was featured in the 2007-produced "Killer Waves" (TV series).

Bremen is world's first-ever cruise vessel with Northwest Passage Cruise itinerary. In 2011, it crossed the North American passage waterway from Kangerlussuaq Greenland to Nome Alaska . In 2012, MS Hanseatic (now Heritage Adventurer) made a full transit via 25-day itinerary leaving from Nome AK (on August 14) and ending in Reykjavik Iceland (on September 7).

In August 2017, MS Bremen became the world's first-ever passenger vessel with "Polar Code" (Polar Ship Certificate) allowing operations in polar regions. All of its fleetmates were also due to receive the certificate by Hapag-Lloyd's 2018 Arctic season. Polar Code (adopted by IMO) contains regulations about polar cruise vessels' construction and onboard equipment, as well as crew training requirements. In 2017, as part of the HL fleet's routine drydocks , all ships met Polar Code's requirements and received polar ship certificates. MS Bremen was scheduled to operate 3 Arctic cruises (2018-2019 season), including one Northeast Passage (summer 2018).

Since January 2019, ship's Captain is Ulf Sodemann - with Hapag-Lloyd AG (company's containership division) since 2005.

In May 2019, the shipowner Scylla AG announced chartering MS Bremen from May 2021 to Polar Latitudes Inc for Arctic and Antarctica itineraries.
