Robens Voyager 3EX (2019) tent review

robens voyager 3ex youtube

UPDATE - Robens released an updated version of the Voyager 3EX. Here's the link > Robens Voyager 3EX 2022 tent review

TentLife is about more than just campsite, fair weather and family camping. We also now do quite a bit of ‘wild camping’. The Robens Voyager 3EX was the second backpacking tent we had purchased and we took it to Scotland and the Isle of Arran for a 4 night test and review.

Our wild camping is most often carried out by 2 adults and 2 dogs, so we need more room than a typical 2 man tent could offer. Hence why we had been looking at and purchasing lightweight 3 man tents. Also, Mrs TentLife has a very serious back injury which requires her to need a good sized mat to sleep on otherwise she cannot move the next day.

We had split the pack weight between us, I had the outer and the groundsheet and Mrs TentLife had the inner with poles and pegs. We stored them in our dry bags and attached them to our backpacks. We were using the Ortlieb dry bags with integrated valves, so you can remove all the air from them and reduce the pack size, and having the tent split between two bags did make it faster and easier to stow away.

We were soon on our way to Ardrossan to catch the ferry over to Arran.

ISLE OF ARRAN This is a beautiful place and would certainly recommend it for camping. We drove from the ferry to carpark near Brodick castle. We popped into to the Wineport pub for some lunch as hadn’t had any breakfast and the queue on the ferry was very long. They have some cracking stuff on menu and we settled on a steak panini and a coffee (always coffee). We even came away with some rather stunning (and large) Scotch eggs for tomorrow mornings breakfast.

Our second night in the Robens Voyager 3EX was enjoyed in Glen Rosa with the stream right next to us. So after our pub lunch we got our backacks from the car and started our hike to find a suitable camping spot, and what a beautiful spot we found. Turns out that we had decided to pitch right next to what is known as the ‘Blue Pool’, and it certainly was wonderful.

We managed to find room to fit the Robens, and although it’s not huge we we trying to get it on the flattest bit of ground we could so as not to be rolling around all night. The Robens was unscathed by the previous nights frost and being packed away slightly damp and it was soon pitched again painlessly, and in double quick time.

We now got to experience the advantages of that big porch area of the Robens Voyager 3EX. The wind through Glen Rosa got particularly chilly whilst we were setting up, so we decided to make full use of the area and make a coffee.

I had the front door opened at first and we had a beautiful view of the mountain range (not actually mountains) and Goatfell. However, as the wind picked up I bought the Coleman Fyrestorm PCS inside and closed the door a little. Many people may now be gasping saying that you shouldn’t be using a stove inside a tent, and this is mostly true but this porch area is more like a shelter and we made sure there was plenty of ventilation and no risk of fire. The discussion about tents and stoves will have to wait for another day/article.

We were planning to camp in Glen Rosa overnight and then hike up to Goatfell (the highest point on the Island) and then head back down to the car and find another place to camp further round the coast. This hike didn’t happen, and the reason for that will be explained in another article.

The Scotch eggs were scrummy, as was the coffee using the water from the ‘Blue Pool’.

robens voyager 3ex youtube

We hiked back to the carpark via a slightly different route, and we sneaked in a little stop off for some scones and coffee next to Arran Aromatics and the Cheese Shop in Brodick.

Not tent related but we drove to the north of Arran and stopped in at the Arran Distillery. We purchased ourselves a lovely whisky and some ciders for later (not all the whisky).

We found a lovely place to wild camp with some fresh running water. Hopefully we would get to see a great sunset. So how did we then end up on a campsite?

We were planning to stay at Seal Shore Campsite for our last night. The thought of a hot shower before the ferry journey and the long drive home sounded very appealing. The campsite site was down on the south part of Arran, so how did we end up there a night early.

Well the nice wild camping spot I mentioned was a little too near the road and we couldn’t let the dogs off for a run. So the mistake we made was to drive along a little further until we found a better place. When we found a good spot, we thought “ooh we will just drive a little further”, and this kept happening – right up to the point where we eventually found ourselves right down in the south of Arran near to the campsite. So at this point we just decided to book ourselves into the Seal Shore a night early and reflect on the fact we should have stopped off sooner and been less picky. This campsite is brilliant, right on the coast with the lighthouse in the distance. Be warned though, the manager said that he was already having to turn people away for next year.

robens voyager 3ex youtube

So after a few beers we made our way back to the Robens for our tea, this time we had MuscleFoods Tender Beef with Thyme and Rice and this was by far our favourite of their meals so far. Even though the Robens is an easy tent to pitch, it was novel to be able to leave the tent pitched up during Monday

TUESDAY Typically it rained whilst we were packing away, but at least this was only a small tent and we just hung it over our washing line to dry when we got home. Goodbye to the Isle of Arran.

We will definitely be returning, but now back to the tent review………………

robens voyager 3ex youtube

We have 2 dogs who love hiking and adventuring with us. We have a Beagle and a Brown Thing and even if Brown Thing wasn’t actually brown then she would be as soon as she gets off the lead. She is attracted to water mud and dirt and is a very very happy little soul. There are many people who wild camp with their animal friends and the space they need has to be factored in when purchasing a tent. Our young dogs aren’t very big, and dependant on the weather they either sleep between us or snuggled up near our legs for bodyheat. The Robens Voyager 3EX has plenty of room inside for the grown ups with our sleeping mats and the dogs with their blankets and insulation. It was definitely not cramped inside, and we all had plenty of room to move around and get comfortable. The dogs were very happy (and worn out) in this tent during our Arran trip and once they found their cosy spot they were fast asleep and getting ready for the next days adventures.

robens voyager 3ex youtube

CONCLUSION Overall this is a light 3 man trekking/backpacking tent with alloy poles, a pack weight of 3.6kg and a size of 47cm x 20cm.

This tent comes in its own waterproof drysack (we’ve tested it), which is a decent size making it easy and fast to pack away. You do have the option of leaving the inner sleeping area in place, but as we were splitting the tent between 2 backpacks we took it out and split everything into two Ortlieb drybags .

The ventilation in this tent seems to be excellent. As it was October (and Scotland), it got dark rather early and we spent long evenings in the tent chatting (and drinking whisky), but the tent didn’t suffer from condensation at all inspite of the cold weather outside.

Having the front porch area on this tent makes it really versatile for many different weather conditions, storing your gear and cooking too. Although we’ve only used it for 4 days so far, it has experienced ice, rain and a bit of wind. It was very reliable and effortless to use.

We are looking forward to getting out in this tent again very soon. The manufacturers spec and other reviews we have read say that the Robens will cope well with high winds and gales. I must say that the build quality and design of this tent does instil us with confidence that it will cope very well. Its quick and easy to pitch, robust and spacious – A very capable tent, perfect for 2 person and 2 doggo activities and we cannot wait to get out in the Robens Voyager 3EX again as soon as we can.

  • What size bedroom do I need in a tent?
  • Do i need to Weather a new tent?
  • What is Condensation & How to reduce it?
  • How do i store my Tent & does it need to be dry?
  • How tight should Guyropes be? and how to adjust them.

The size of bedroom you may need has many factors. Tent manufacturers show the size as a maximum amount of people and will not consider for any extra space you may need.

You need to consider the following.

  • How many people would you like to sleep, and in each bedroom.
  • The size of the Camp bed / bedding you are using [as these will take up more room]. To give a good idea, a standard double airbed can take up the space of around 3 people.
  • How much extra space you may need for storage of Clothing etc.

Our suggestion would be a family of 4 would really require a 6+ berth tent to allow for extra space.

When a tent is manufactured the needle used for the stitching is thicker than the thread. Therefore all tents need time to weather or also known as wetting out. By getting the tent wet and dry a few times, this tightens the stitching and the fabric and creates a better natural bond in the fire. Most people will pitch their tent in the garden as per above, but its worth getting it wet and dry either by rain or with a garden hose. With the first couple uses you may find the odd seam or hanging point drip in, these will naturally seal over  time the more the tent is wetted out and dried. Polly cotton tents are more prone to this due to the high volume of cotton, but experience has taught us all tents need weathering.

Has my tent leaked, or is it condensation? If you have been unlucky enough to find water in your tent, it is very unlikely that your tent has leaked. Vango tents are made to the highest specification using quality materials and components. From tough, waterproof fabrics to strong stitching techniques and sealed seams, your tent is designed to keep the weather out.

How much condensation can form in a tent? Did you know that 1 person can produce up to 1 pint of condensation per night? So, let’s say you have 5 people in a tent, that is potentially 5 pints of water inside your tent! Other likely sources of moisture are wet shoes, clothes, dogs, cooking, even the air itself! Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air, as the temperature falls at night the more moisture is released into the air. Fact, even without occupants, the air in a six-man tent holds approximately 1 pint of water!

What causes condensation in tents? Air temperature in the tent can become warm and humid from people, heaters, and a lack of ventilation. When the warm air inside the tent hits the relatively cool fabric of the tent, the moisture condenses into liquid form. Do all tents suffer from condensation? Tents designed with good ventilation and an inner tent will fair best. In certain weather conditions, the design of any tent can be overwhelmed by moisture. For example, if it is a cold night and there is no breeze to circulate the warm, moist air out of the tent, condensation is likely to form. The air, as held within the beams of a Vango AirBeam tent, circulates within the beams. If the outside temperature is much cooler than that inside the tent, then the cooling of the air in the beams is quite quick. The warm, humid air inside the tent then condensates onto the area of the beams inside the tent. This moisture can then appear as water droplets on the AirBeams and in some cases may create pools of water at the base of the AirBeams. If the prevailing conditions are particularly prone to condensation, remove items from around the base of beams.

What weather conditions can make condensation worse? Condensation can be made worse when the air outside the tent is significantly cooler than inside, especially after a warm, humid day. On days where there is a substantial temperature drop, it can be challenging to prevent tent condensation forming. Rainy conditions can also increase the chances of condensation occurring, often leading to the appearance of a leaking tent. Rain water on the outside of the tent, or rain water evaporating off the outer surface of the tent causes the temperature of the fabric to decrease, leading to more rapid condensation as the air inside the tent comes into contact with it.

My tent is wet from condensation, what should I do? Wiping the walls with a towel or cloth is a good way to remove condensation from the surface and stop any drips. On polycotton, avoid pressing against the sides of the tents as this can cause water to seep through. If you are staying in one location, remove all wet items from the tent and dry them so that they don’t create more moisture the next night. Dry and ventilate your tent as best as you can. Tents can be slow to dry on cold mornings. If you are trekking, you may wish to pack your tent and dry it out properly in the midday sun.

How can you prevent condensation in your tent? Here are our top tips for a dry night!     Ventilate your tent! : The most effective way to prevent condensation is to ventilate your tent and reduce the internal humidity of your tent by promoting a good airflow. Examine your tent for low and high venting options and open them to let the moist air flow out. If the weather conditions permit, leave the upper and lower sections of the door open, mesh sections can be kept fully zipped. If appropriate, also ensure vents at the rear of the tent are fully open. Make sure the vents are not obstructed by bags or sleeping bodies.     Store wet stuff outside : Towels, boots, waterproofs, swimming trunks, sweaty friends… keep that soggy, wet stuff out of the tent. Use an awning, tarp or hub to provide storage for wet kit.     Don’t touch the sides : If pressure is applied to the tent walls of a polycotton tent, water may seep through. Keep bags and other items away from tent walls and be mindful that condensation can collect at the foot of AirBeams.     Never cook inside: Primarily for safety but cooking also releases large amounts of moisture into the air. Remember that extractor fan in the kitchen at home?     Turn heaters off: Further warming the air inside the tent will increase water vapour in the air as warm air can support more moisture (our techy guys talk about dew points and percentage humidity), plus the warmer the tent is the more moisture will be released into the tent through evaporation and perspiration. Instead of heating the tent, warm yourself up with the right clothing and good sleeping bags.     Pitch in a spot that gets a natural breeze: Sheltered areas are more prone to generating condensation. Pitch your tent so that vents are lined up with the prevailing winds.     Don’t pitch too close to water : Rivers and lakes can increase humidity. Pitching your tent, a little further away from water sources can help reduce condensation.      Take spare towels: In some weather conditions condensation is difficult to avoid. Reduce it using the steps above and pack a spare towel to simply wipe it away.

When packing away your tent it must be completely dry both inside and out. If you have to pack your tent away wet on site then please get it out as soon as your home. Mildew / mould is caused by putting tents away wet and one of the biggest causes for tents degrading. This includes poles and muddy pegs.

Tents must be stored in a cool dry location, free from chances of damp or damage caused by rodents.

Guy ropes need to have enough tension to both hold the tent but  also to allow it to move. Guy ropes should not be over tight. Its worth adjusting these in the morning or evening. If its wet or cold the fabric can become looser and will need tightening. If you are due to have a warm dry day slacken your guy points to allow the tent to tighten up.

Robens Voyager 3EX 3 Berth High End Tent

The two-person Voyager 2EX is a stable tunnel tent thanks to features that include the ripstop polyester outer, flat pole sleeves and aluminium alloy poles. It features a large extended porch perfect for expedition pack storage or for foul weather relaxation – something that is much appreciated by self-supported trekkers, cyclists and other adventurers. The clip-in inner tent features a large O-shaped door for easy access and sitting without stressing the fabric.

Robens Wind Test: The determination of the performance of a Robens tent in wind is based on the knowledge and technique available to Robens at the time of testing. During the test we register the maximum (MAX) speed impact a tent was subjected and the average (AVG) wind speed at which structural instability occurred. This may appear as a broken/deformed pole, or the collapse of the tent and subsequent return to shape when the wind drops. At no point was any form of catastrophic failure experienced up to the maximum wind speed.

Be aware that (UV) ultraviolet rays will damage your tent if you expose it to direct sunlight for longer periods of time. Polyester Awnings & Tents regardless of quality of denier material are made for camping use which is normally 2-5 weeks usage a year. They are not designed for permanent usage and should only be used as camping products. Camping near the sea or lake can further enhance the effect of UV radiation. The same applies to poles and metal parts

"UV light will cause the fabric to fade, lose strength, and eventually disintegrate. The amount of UV damage is directly related to the fabric's exposure to the sun and the altitude at which the tent is pitched. If it is left pitched during the day, high-altitude exposure can damage a tent beyond use within a month."

What is UV Degradation? UV degradation refers to the breaking down of fabrics and materials, when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, due to exposure to the sun. Long term exposure to sunlight, can cause fabric such as polyester to degrade, beginning to rip, tear and become very brittle.

Why Do Manufacturers not cover UV Degradation Under Warranty? UV degradation is a sign the product has reached a natural end to it's lifetime. There are different fabrics, different thicknesses of fabric, and treatments to help protect against exposure to sunlight. However, given time, the sun will do it's job in breaking down those materials, to the point where they become unstable.

If a polyester tent or awning has suffered UV degradation, chances are it has been used to the point where its lifetime is ending, or it has been permanently pitched. Polyester Tents & Awnings are a temporary shelter, and they are not designed to be left long-term pitched, unless they are specifically designed for residential pitches, and use harder wearing fabrics such as 100% cottons, which can take exposure to UV light on a longer-term basis.

Polyester Tents & Awnings have it pretty rough. Their purpose is to keep you protected from the elements, so by definition, they’re exposed to nature’s fury. Season after season, your trusty tent or tarp is subjected to wind, rain, dust, snow, hail, animals, and (sometimes) careless users. But for a shelter that has been treated well over the years, the thing that will eventually kill it is something you might not expect: the sun.

In addition to visible light, the sun emits a massive amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which has a shorter wavelength than visible light and is present wherever there is sunlight. While inorganic materials (like silicone and metal) are largely unaffected by UV radiation, organic compounds (i.e., anything containing carbon, not just your fancy kale) can be damaged by exposure to UV. This includes all organic polymers, whether synthetic (like nylon and polyester) or naturally occurring (like cotton and wool).

About Robens Voyager 3EX

The large porch area on Robens Voyager 3EX makes it a popular tent among hikers, cyclists and other campers who are looking for a tent with a little more space. By avoiding extra features and only focusing on durable weather-resistant details, Robens has developed a tent that provides very good quality at a good price. The shape of the tent, a good tent fabric and aluminium poles provide a very stable tent that is tested against winds up to 140 km / h. The tent has properly increased continuous ventilation that can be adjusted from the inner tent. The door to the inner tent is equipped with mosquito nets for better ventilation through the cabin. The tent fabric is made of strong ripstop polyester with PU treatment and all seams are taped, which guarantees both durability and good resistance to water for many years without compromising too much on the weight.
